This is the 6th time I'm getting a van from Rental Car Village. Absolutely easy going and smooth service. No problems with pick up nor drop off... Even in the middle of the night (drop-off). Staff is really friendly. The cars don't look like much but they have never disappointed, no matter the condition of the road! Basic but everything you need. The street atlas you can get as an extra is a must! It was basically our bible cruising through NZ.

Rented a van for 15 days back in Feb. I'd looked at multiple hire companies and this was by far the cheapest. They have decent, straight forward insurance policy, that actually covers you for a number of things other providers exclude in their small print. The van itself, while basic, does do the job, you have everything you need and for the rental price it's very affordable. Mechanically we had zero issues and despite a crack in the windscreen (covered by insurance) we had no problems. The staff were incredibly friendly, picked up the phone instantly when needed. Suggestions: The mattress is on the firmer side, and you only get one pillow in the bedding package. Other than that would 100% recommend.

The staff here are very friendly and helpful. They give you a lot of important information about driving in NZ as well as some useful tips and emergency breakdown numbers. You can arrange for a shuttle service to and from the airport. They'll also call you a taxi back to the airport if you haven't booked the shuttle bus.
You can return the vehicle to Auckland or rent in Auckland and return to Christchurch which seems a popular choice among travelers.
We rented the economy campervan from them for 2 weeks. The vans are well serviced considering the amount of mileage they have done and are expected to do. Very reliable, we had no mechanical issues whatsoever with the van. The beds were surprisingly comfortable and we slept quite nicely in the back. We're just under 6 foot tall and we had just about the right amount of space to lie down, any taller and I think you might knock you feet on the wooden table at the end. The linen pack is an essential unless you want to buy or bring your own. The pillows were a bit flat so you might need something under them to prop yourself up a bit (personal preference). Blankets were warm enough in the night and the van stays warm with two people in the back but if you're from a warm country you may find some nights a bit chilly.
The two gas burners worked perfectly. We cooked a lot and used up 4 gas canisters in two weeks. I highly recommend buying gas from them before heading out. Storage space is limited in the double bed configuration but it is a pain to change the bed back to sofa position so we decided to leave it out so when we get tired we can go to sleep without faffing about with beds. Helps to travel light!
Finally, if you're a music lover you might want to bring your own speakers or audio set up because there is only an old radio in the van with no aux input. Just use a smartphone and Bluetooth speakers instead. You can charge up your phone via the old cigarette lighter port (12V DC aux power outlet), they provide the adapter if you ask them.

Overall we were happy with our car for two month. The battery was too old and we had a jump start two times. The assurance payed for the flat tire. The engine could be stronger, but it is strong enough to drive with on every "normal" road. As 100 km/h is the speed limit, the car is able to make 130 km/h, which is fast enough to overtake.

What a great company. We've heard about them from a traveling blog. We rented a micro camper but as we travel with 3 young kids, we didn't take the mattress. We picked up only what we needed so we had a very comfortable stationwagon for a fraction of the price of any rental car. It was even cheaper to have the car and renting houses from bookabach than renting a regular campervan for the five of us.
The terms were clear and very honest. Also we had a great personalized service and got answers quickly to all our questions.

Hired the microvan for two weeks and was great. Had everything we needed really (bedding and maps extra) and ran like a dream, efficient on fuel and the annex was great. Thanks Rental Car Village. :)

After a lot of campervan research I found the company Rental Car Village, owned and run by the Thomlinson family. I liked them for several reasons:
• It is a family owned business which gives you a great and personal service. When I send in a request for more information I received a friendly and personal email from owner Grant Thomlinson. He not only explained their rental procedures very clearly, he also gave great advice about hostels in Christchurch and Auckland and a list of his favorite campsites.
• There is no advertising on the vans. When you drive around NZ you see a lot of campervans in all shapes, colors and sizes. What pretty much all of them have in common: they are plastered in big bold advertisements of the rental companies that owns them. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I really liked it that we blended into normal traffic with our plain white campervan.
• Their price is the best offer I have come across in my thorough search. They explain how they keep their prices low in the FAQ on their website and I think it’s awesome they are transparent about their cost structure.

(Translated) I rented a micro-camper for a month, an excellent price for alternatives and budget exhaustion - the vehicle comes with everything you need to sleep in the car and cook for yourself: tools, gas, bed, curtains and other cool patents that realize their importance in the middle of the trip.
The vehicle was in excellent condition and remained so until the end.
There are a few things you can rent out that I recommend: Chairs and this table really make it possible to improvise and be independent even in crowded areas.
Very do not recommend refrigerator pressure - not practical unless really driving for hours every day, otherwise it is simply better to cool with ice.
The process of obtaining and returning the vehicle is very fast, it is necessary to perform a basic emergency wash before returning at $ 10 New Zealand.
