We had a bit of a mixed experience with spaceships and our dream sleeper mini. To start with the negatives: - Our ‘luxury’ dream sleeper was in poor shape on the outside. It was battered and scratched all over, missing a hub cap and looked very tired - far from what was described or sold to us. - The van was very thirsty on fuel - Not ideal in the rain as you need to empty the van when setting the bed up and turning the chairs around. The rain and wind is also an issue when cooking which is done outside. - Make sure you check USB ports are working as our front port didn’t work - The van smelt of mould and dirt which we couldn’t get rid of - the van was pretty dirty when we collected it and the curtains especially were filthy. The positives: - The people who work here are very friendly and helpful. - The size of the vans are handy in that they aren’t too big and therefore easily manoeuvrable around towns and twisty roads in New Zealand. - Considering their size, they are well designed inside and we found the bed comfortable and the kitchen area (especially the larger fridge and sink) handy, especially compared to the cheaper spaceships. The saving grace was Vicky who works remotely. We spoke to her about the issues with the state of the van and she kindly offered us a small partial refund. Had I done this all over again, I’d have gone with a slightly bigger and newer van from another company.

Great quality and affordable rentals, perfect for what you need to get around on a trip less than 2 weeks, anything more and we'd recommend going something a bit bigger that is self contained, but the setups they have are fantastic for such a small easy to drive vehicle. Lots of fun and friendly staff

Our budget Spaceship Mr. Blobby was a real trooper and we loved every minute with it. Our experience with Spaceship was beyond expectations from the airport pickup to the built in star experience window to the after hours return. Highly recommended!

Awesome experience! Staff is very helpful. We picked at Christchurch and left at Auckland. Our car was Dream Sleeper Mini with many equipment. Drives almost like a normal car, but it feels heavy like it should. Had some issues with touchscreen, sometimes it started to press buttons automatically, but overall all worked very well. We lost one lid of the pod, but had no issues or fines. Also we cleaned and washed car on delivery.

We rent a car for 2 weeks here. Standard version but we got premium in the same price. 😁 Cool cars , have everything you need for cooking and sleeping. Nice personel :) i really recommend you spaceship. It's cheaper than other rentals with campervan but it's great value 😁

Amazing company and staff at Christchurch. We had a really good rental and customer experience with Spaceship. Their price was absolutely reasonable. There was a free stuff zone for the new comers. I do really appreciate this concept as travellers could save some of their money, also reduce waste. The car was reliable, clean came along with all the camping gears. The lady (from UK) at the reception was super friendly, we could not ask for more than that. Highly recommended this car hire company :)

The caravan experience was amazing. Overall the spaceships van was as expected. We had a few issues with non working USB ports but we managed. Check all the ports before you depart. It is nice to have a regular sized vehicle like these when driving in NZ for first timers. The left side ,narrow and twisty roads make this a great option. Be prepared to empty the van of your bags when setting up the bed. The seats swivel and the mattress rests on the seat cushion. Great for sunny 🌞 days. Not as much fun in the rain as it is quite an ordeal to get setup to sleep. We enjoyed 16 days here with the van. If you need to sit up while in bed or get dressed standing up. This is not the van for you. But if you want to experience NZ and enjoy traveling and understand that you will be a little cramped but comfortable at night, then this may be your choice.

We where totally satisfied with our Spaceship! The booking and picking up was very easy and we could check in our documents before the pick up, to safe time at the rental Office. When we had a tecnical Problem on the road it was very uncomplicated. We just contacted Spaceships and they talked to the Workshop, the bill went directly to Spaceships. The car itself was exactly what we needed. It was equipped with all you Need for cooking and we had enough space for all our stuff. We liked that we had the comfort of a camper van but the Advantages of a car.

Did quite a bit of research before booking a car - we were very happy with Spaceships! Didn't go for the cheapest so had a car that was not the newest but in very good condition. Nice and clean, too. After hours drop-off is easy to organise. Lovely staff too in the Christchurch office.

The service was good, the staff let me pick up the car after hours which was easy. I rented the rocket (budget camper) as I was travelling alone. The car was reliable and comfortable, came with duvet, pillow and cooking utensils. Only downsides were that the car came with half a tank of petrol, so it was abit difficult to gauge how much fuel to leave in the car when you return it and that you have to wash and vacuum the car or face a $100 fine. Overall a good service.

I had a great experience hiring a Spaceship! One of the main reasons why I chose them was their service of after-hours pick up, since I flew in Christchurch at 1am. I was able to pick up the car straight away, which was awesome. The whole process was all online. I had a minor issue in Queenstown when the sound system stopped working. I called their hotline and got instantly booked for a auto workshop that fixed it on the same day. Everything really smooth! Well done to all Spaceship team!

Loved being able to pick up and drop off after hours, it was all very easy. I got my damage deposit back on my credit card within 48 hours too, unlike some agencies. Great service and friendly staff ready to help. I will hire from them again the next time i go to NZ

The Van was a bit old and worn but very functional (it clearly had new tyres on it as well). Very useful extras were supplied and many others were available for rental. The Van was a bit thirsty on fuel but that is to be expected with older vehicles. The staff were friendly and helpful. The price was very good and all the bedding was fresh and clean. It made our trip to Christchurch simple and easy. To avoid any stress allow a reasonable amount of time when picking up the van. It takes time for the staff to show everything you will need to know about the vehicles. Thanks for the service guys

we chose the beta 2S premium camper for 2 people and we travelled the South Island for 1 week. The camper van was perfect and had everything that you’d need. The bed was comfy and the car spacious. Kitchen equipment was perfect and we’re even able to pick items that other travellers had bought but not used which was really helpful! Could not reccomend enough and definitely worth every penny! staff were super lovely aswell :)

We hired a dreamsleeper mini for 13 days. I have lived and traveled in a campervan for ~3 months, so I know what to expect from van life. This campervan was not comfortable or well layed out. I would not recommend hiring this van. The bad things first... It is advertised as a luxury campervan, and it really isn't. Condition: The van was very grubby - stains everywhere and mould on the ceiling (refer photo). The van had done over 260,000km and there were issues with the automatic door, central locking and radio. One of the curtain rails fell off while we were driving on day 2. Comfort: The bed is not long enough for anyone over 6ft/180cm (6'2" partner struggled). The mattress is not thick enough and dented from so many people sleeping on it. Mosquito nets were not provided (advertised as included). At pick-up the Dutch guy that checked us is was really rude - he made sexist comments about another customer that phoned in with issues; and he was very pushy about the extra insurance. The OK stuff... These issues were manageable for 2 weeks - more of an annoyance. Layout: it's really not a great use of the space. The kitchen bench is too high, not great food storage space, the fridge is actually too big for the space, the storage is only accessible when the bed is packed away. We saw other vans with similar layout, so maybe this is normal for NZ vans. The good things... The Estima is easy to drive. The rest of the staff we dealt with at pick-up and drop-off were friendly and professional.

I couldn't be happier with my experience with Spaceships. We had a Rocket from December 1 to 19, 2017. My sister and brother-in-law also had a Rocket and we travelled with them for 10 days. This is the way to go. Everything in the process was smooth, price was very reasonable. We were amazed at how well the design worked. Sleeping was comfortable. Staff on both ends were great.

Staff and service was very good. The car itself (Beta2) quite old. Toyota vans from around 2005, ours with nearly 300k km. A lot of fuel consumption (unfortunately gas and not diesel). Anyhow cars are always serviced, so a safe driving. But I would recommend to choose a bigger one on basis of Toyota Hilace or Mercedes Sprinter (Juicy or Maui). They also have newer vehicles.

We hired a campervan for two weeks. It was super clean and worked fine. We had some trouble with a check engine light but the roadservice was very helpful and we managed to sort it out. The girl at the Chch office was really nice and fast, very easy to work with. I would definitely recommend this car rental. The only downside is that you need to return the car washed and vacuumed or you're charged $100.

Awesome catalyst to our awesome holiday. We checked in out of hours and the process was easy and as described. As a result, we didn't realise until weeks later when we returned our rocket during business hours how awesome their staff are, great service and company culture. The rocket came with all we needed for a comfortable adventure holiday, and even a second butane stove so that we could book the kettle and cook food at the same time - we met others in Jucy vans that paid much more for their hire and only had one stove which they said was inconvenient. Because we checked in out of hours, we didn't know how to turn the middle chairs around so that we could set up the bed, called and their support were helpful and professional. We loved the sun roof & moon roof, slept under the stars, the rain, the clouds and the moon - whatever the sky was offering. In their reception area you can make a cuppa, try and set a high score on their retro games and they also have a collection of things left behind by other campers (butane, packaged foods etc.) that you can grab for free and it eliminates a lot of waste. Also, the rental cost was so cheap - I actually can't wrap my head around how they make a profit! We will be back, we are not done with NZ and spaceships is the way to go!

They had good service leading up to our trip and organised after hours pick up because we had a late flight arriving after midnight. Our spaceship was aptly named the "Millennium Falcon". Unfortunately it worked about as well as the actual Millennium Falcon in the Star Wars movies! We had issues with the speedometer which failed after a few days of travel. When we called on Saturday afternoon we were told we needed to stop in the closest large town/city which happened to be Greymouth and stay there until Monday when we could take it to repairs because nothing was open on a Sunday. So we were stuck in Greymouth for two days (with nothing much to do). We spent most of Monday at the repairs and they couldn't fix the problem without ordering in a new part which would take 7 days. We requested a new vehicle which they said they couldn't do. Eventually it was decided that we would be allowed to continue our journey because the car was assessed to be road worthy in every other respect. We ended up using our GPS as a speedometer! (Thankfully it was free GPS month in February!) A few days later, the speedometer randomly started working again! The rest of the journey was smooth. We do like spaceships and understand it is a budget option. We have used them once before for 3 weeks with no problems (we did get something minor fixed at Queenstown but it didn't take long -like less than an hour). So I do still recommend it overall. It is a good compact set up. The bed is comfortable and all the cutlery and cooking equipment is included. I like that it is a Tarago because it is as easy to drive as a normal car unlike the big motor homes that are also on the market. It is also much more cost effective in terms of petrol and hire price. It is a fun experience and I highly recommend it! (Unless you are very tall like 6 foot plus!)

Strapped for cash, my partner and I rented the budget campervan for our three week trip in New Zealand's South Island. Spaceships was by far the most affordable option compared to Jucy, Britz, Travel Autobarn, etc. At first I was a little worried that such a great deal was too good to be true, that we were going to receive a hunk of smelly junk that broke down on us all the time. Those apprehensions were quickly obliterated the moment we saw our vehicle, Mr. Potato Head. While he had nearly 300,000 km on him, he ran like a charm and never gave us any trouble. The inside of the van was immaculate, with brand new bedding. It came with just about everything we needed for the trip and even though we went with the cheapest option, we didn't feel like we missed out on anything. Besides the product being everything expected and more, so was the service provided by the staff in Christchurch who were extremely friendly and answered many questions I had before I booked the vehicle. I have nothing but great things to say about our experience with Spaceships and highly recommend them.

Well maintained aging car which didn't give us any problem during our 12 days 2000km drive. The service staff is friendly. Do note that the office is about 2.4km from airport and free shuttle from airport is only provided if you have rented 21 days and more.
