A time capsule place. You could imagine yourself back in the 1940's or 50's relaxing by the sea, waiting for the ferry (now doesn't exist). The menu offers predominantly Kai moana, food from the sea, well presented and ample on the plate.

Had a meal twice in the last week. Both first class; friendly and helpful staff. Great location. Some of the reviews are 'nit picking' and show a total ignorance of the difficulties of operating a hospitality business in the current climate. Support this restaurant; you will not be disappointed.

Popular hotel for lunch today. Choice on menu was very limited (fries with just about everything). View and set up was lovely, though.

Good but could be better. Food lovely and service okay but this is the second time when there was a machinery malfunction. A month ago it was their deep fryer, this time it was the coffee machine. 😞

Beautiful place way down the other end of the country side. The caffe setting is so nice with outside seating with umbrellas, overlooking the beautiful ocean view. Next door is a fantastic airbnb which I would love to book for a quiet weekend. We did a short walk and watching people fishing, and we ended up having lunch at the Cafe. Will plan to and stay over next time.

A nice place to go and relax with a nice cold beer after enjoying the trip there. Situated at the exit point of lake Wairarapa. Good service and nice and polite stuff.

We went to dinner at the hotel this weekend. The food was lovely,decent portions and a great price. We sat at a nice table overlooking the water. I did think the waitress who served us could have been a little more attentive. She wasn't very friendly, didn't offer us any water and when we ordered drinks we had to wait a very long time for them to arrive as she had forgotten. To be fair she admitted to this and apologized. When we paid the bill the waitress entered the amount owing and walked away before we had finished paying. It would have been nice for her to complete the payment process before walking off.The food was great and we enjoyed the beautiful view there are just a few things the waitress could have done differently.

Smashing views and best fish and chips ever. Very capable staff. Well worth the trip there. Great photo opps as well.

Have visited this hotel over many years... the food is good.. the look.of the place is looking more modern but it lacks a theme and has only partially been refurbished

The view was so lovely. Quiet busy during dinner time. Very fresh fish and chips! The chips were so good as well! Had a very flavourful seafood chowder! Decent and quite large portion for the meals and worth the price! Worth the visit during summer to chill with mates

Great place for a lazy lunch - fun vibe, excellent service, outside tables looking over the flaxes in flower to the lake and the far hills. Best fish and chips - John Dory! - amazing, with a lager topper maybe or an on-tap craft beer or wine of your choice? Delicious summer....

Great Fish & Chips, Seafood chowder was great too. Too bad they can't seem to cope with crowds, slow service and forget waiting in line to have another drink. Awesome bike ride to Lake Ferry though.

Lake Ferry Hotel has a reputation for great fish and chips and it is well deserved. Crispy batter on the freshest fish and generous portions of chips. Lots of cold wine, beer and soft drinks. Well worth the drive.

Last visited here 20years ago with a fond memory of old fashioned fish and chips under a hot western sun and a view of amazing Lake Ferry. Now no longer your old fashioned fish and chips. A new look and revamp with the food more cafe style. We had beautiful fresh fish and excellently cooked chips, but a bit on the expensive side.

Had a lovely lunch at hotel. Stormy day and the sea was spectacular. Fire roaring inside and steak sandwich was delicious. Very clean and food well presented. Thanks for the lovely lunch. Well worth the short drive from Martinborough.

Hi There, My cousin & I took my elderly Aunt & Uncle to lunch yesterday for his 75th birthday & my Aunts 96th on Friday. Had a lovely meal of fish n chips. Really nice. My cousin had made a cake to celebrate their milestones and we were very disappointed when we went to order a cup of tea and got told by a very rude young girl that no tea sorry. Way too busy for that!!!! Doesn't take long to make a cup of tea for the elderly. Not quite the same having water with our cake. I understand that you were busy but it's the small acts of kindness in the world that mean the most. Won't stop me from going back but just a little disappointed.

This is a fantastic hotel at the base of lake ferry we're it joins the ocean. A rustic place that has food and drinks. It can get a little busy at times.

Early Lunch on a brisk winter morning, by the fire...It was simple fare, done perfectly! A juicy steak sandwich on the freshest ciabatta..tasty fish and chips with crispy batter and crisp hot fries, nicely seasoned chicken nibbles.. Yum!! Complimented with great coffee to finish off.Just what we needed!

Enjoyed the famous fish n chip meal on a sunny afternoon. Good value, served efficiently. Natural wooden tables outside were extremely rustic.

This is a quaint out of tge way real home town Hotel. The staff are super friendly and with fantastic outdoor seating to enjoy a meal and drink. Looking forward to returning and spending a night or two.

Fantastic fish & chips right by the water!

A popular place at the weekends for day trippers from Wellington, either in cars or on motorbikes. Friendly and efficient staff keep the food coming through the busy lunchtime. The hotel is rightly famous for its fish and chips, otherwise a small menu but all food well made and fresh, plus a good selection of beer and wine to wash it down. A great excuse to visit the rugged south Wairarapa coast!

We have stayed at Lake Ferry hotel for the last 2 Christmas periods, this will be our third year going back. Accommodation value for money, i have a disability and the hotel disability bathroom is perfect and meets the needs of someone in a wheelchair. The staff have always been friendly and helpful. Great to see tvs in some of the rooms especially when the weather is horrible.

Enjoyed lunch at lake Ferry Hotel on Boxing Day. Food was good and the service was friendly. However, the menu on the board did not match the one we found online, and they would not make this for us when asked. This was fine but we noticed that while we were they added items to the board. Which made us feel like we missing an opportunity, this is frustrating when options are already so limited for someone who is gluten free.

Food is ok. I was really looking forward to enjoying a Reuben sandwich I saw on the online copy of their menu. The actual menu has needs updating as they offer much fewer options. My husband & I ordered a cappa & a flat white, both coffees were the same. At least the location is awesome.

Went in for a quick bite for dinner and a few drinks with the kids. Ate outside in the garden bar (so ordered off the bar menu). Few options, pricing ok but food really average (loaded fries in particular - really not that loaded and pretty tasteless). So many of the tap beers were unavailable, as were the wines. Service friendly but slow. Views amazing but not enough to bring us back.

Lovely seafood chowder, and my other half says the fish and chips were great too. Not too busy, took only 15 mins for our meals, on a Sunday about 12:30. Definitely worth a visit.

In an absolutely stunning location with great service from the lone barman on a quiet midweek evening, good beer and food. Kids played pool while we soaked up the views after a short walk out onto the spit and a quick game of French cricket on the beach. We did find it closed between 3 and 5 which wasn't totally clear from the website in case you are planning on visiting in the afternoon.

Cute hotel with a decent restaurant. Watching the sunset with a cold beer from their deck is absolutely recommended. The food is very good, although a bit on the expensive side. I can definitely recommend the shepherd burger. Tables are a sticky though and the cutlery and glasses are also not very clean. This doesnt prevent me from coming here again however.

Fabulous place to visit for lunch with stunning views across the lake to the Remutaka Range. The Famous Fish 'n Chips are just wonderful and highly recommended. Friendly, helpful staff and pleasant indoor and outdoor seating options.

Delightful setting. Appeared to be good food if you had Fish and Chips as most of my party did. I opted for my favourite Seafood Chowder. I asked if it was on, as it was a very hot summer day. Answer was yes. Very disappointed as I found 1 mussel, 1 shrimp, I think and maybe some calimari. There was heaps of vegetables. The flavour was fine but where was the fish, especially at a place on the sea?

A nice enough place to sit and have some beers and maybe a quick meal. I would probably give it 3.5 stars if I could. We tried the fish and chips, and it was ok, but not worthy of being famous, the fish was fine but no better than most chip shops and the chips themselves were just frozen. Service was good and prices were average.

Lovely lunch although the amount has gone down and the price has gone up. You used to get two pieces of fish (the best part), now only one 😪 but, still so very enjoyable. The view still perfect.

Beautiful location, nice interior, lovely deck/outside area, and good range of beer and drinks. Moderate sized menu for bar snacks and meals, coffee available. Service was pretty grumpy, but I'd give her the benefit of the doubt and say it might have been a bad day.

Fish and chips ok, the serving a bit small. Mac's F&C in Runanga are the best by a country mile.

LAKE FERRY HOTEL, I DEFINITELY WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PLACE AS A GO TO PLACE TO HAVE A DELICIOUS MEAL, I HAD A WHITE BAIT OMELET WITH SALAD, SO FAB WAS THE OMELET FULL OF WHITE BAIT, FRESH, VERY INVITING, THE CHEF IS EXCELLENT, VERY WELL PRESENTED FOOD, THE STAFF ARE VERY HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY ALSO. I WILL BE BACK, NOT JUST FOR THE FOOD BUT THE VIEWS OF THE LAKE AND THE SEA, VERY BREATHTAKING, I WOULD RECOMMEND EVERYONE GO AND VISIT THIS GORGEOUS PLACE, ENJOY THE YUMMY FOOD. THANKYOU LOUISE.

Nice setting, friendly lady behind the bar. Nice big windows allow you to look out towards the lake and beach. The outside garden area was excellent, with a nice display of plants, bushes and trees. Only criticisms as that the inside was a bit dirty and needs a slight upgrade. Although I you need places like this. I would call it spit and sawdust.

Great lunch while enjoying the view. Fish was beautifully cooked and the Fisherman's Burger went down a treat.

As you would expect and not at all disappointing. It's adequate fare for a remote location. Friendly staff and lovely views of a dramatic landscape. Mostly pub style food or slightly better. Excellent roaring fire on a cool winter's day.

Visited the Lake Ferry Hotel on 27 and 28 January 2015 while staying in the area. First time we had the "famous fish and chips", which were great. Second time we had ice cream sundaes after kayaking on Lake Onoke. Again, the sundaes were top. You get great views across the lake and hills. Staff were very friendly too. Definitely recommended!

Didnt stay, but had lunch. The fishnchips was great. Light batter and the fish very nice, the service excellent and the fireplace and the atmosphere was a delight! Great place to visit for families.

Nice break away although on the continental breakfast side the bread was a bit stale on the 3rd day there was also no milk in the fridge for coffee or cereals. The accomodation is very basic with shared facilities. Over all it is a nice place to stay the restaurant is a bit on the expensive side but the food was good.

Lake Ferry Hotel: one of the best places to have a beer and some fish and chips, and just reflect on the power of the sea. Great fish and chips, then a short walk to the coastline, well worth the trip.

Great end of the road stop, plenty to view whilst enjoying menu. Car park slopes so park bike carefully and put handbrake on in car. Climb the steps onto the veranda and claim a table. The ferry bar(sea version) is nearby. Views across lake to western hills are great! Service is quick and pleasant, menu I found great( gotta try white bait fritter, or ferry's famous fish n chips) noce selection of wine & beers. There are rooms if your lucky and need one for the nite, pool table. . I'm coming back for an evening or sunset meal. Worth the drive/ride

Very basic - only one room with en-suite and the rest with shared facities. TV and tea/coffee in residents' lounge. Bit noisy as rooms are not soundproofed. Great restaurant and bistro - fish and chips were wonderful. Good views over lake from residents lounge, and eateries. Good service, friendly. Free continental breakfast and wifi (when working) included.

Very long wait for food. The food was great but a bit cold, especially one meal that had been sitting for 10 mins before it was delivered to the table. Lovely setting and relaxed atmosphere and the food was good... they were probably understaffed.

Very popular so I’m happy to wait a few minutes for service when it’s busy - it’s well worth it and I can have a wine while enjoying the amazing view. Many good memories there. Recommend.

Beautiful fish and chips

On Friday 20th March 2015 we had the famous fish & chips for lunch. We found the service to be good, the meal presentation to be good, the chips okay, the salad fresh lettuce, few thin slices of carrot, two segments of tomato and too much vinegar dressing, one small fillet of fish very good, with some tomato sauce and tartare sauce sharing the same dish. Was the meal value for money, no it was not. If there had been another small fillet or one large fillet and separate sauce dishes then the meal would have been rated higher than just okay.

Well worth the trip out to this Hotel as not only do you get to enjoy the beautiful scenery but the food here is delicious!

simple but nice accommodation. very nice staff. I was the only guest with my daughter so we were all alone in the hotel at night, everything for breakfast is ready, so we were able to eat at any time. very beautiful area and just 40 min drive to Cape Palliser. perfect place to relax and have a time out. the food was good. for this price; everything as expected and alright! no cell phone service but wlan.

Attended a wedding here and are pleased to say that the food is awesome and the staff were brilliant. You must try the Fish & Chip meal - fantastic - the fish is John Dory cooked beautifully.

Lovely fireplace and good food 💜 haven't been back for many years so good to pop in on the way to the bach. The old photos on the walls are good to look at..and size of those grouper!

Worth the drive just to get a feed of their famous Fish'n'Chips. Wash them down with a pint or two.

Stuff done its best but felt always during checkin as an in between guest. Once she answered the phone, once she took an order on the bar and I got the rooms shown / checkin while she had time. 85NZD for a double room non ensuite is quiet a mark and I think you pay mainly for the location. The whole 'hotel' is pretty old, the floors look like you are in a holiday park cabin and the bed was hard as stone. While the room was about average, the surrounding was great. You are in betwen the lake and the sea waterfront. It is super quiet out here and there is some garden, terrace and parking space you can use. Strange enough: The hotel got a backpackers area, but no cooking facilities. While we asked if we could at least fry our rare meat, on our own stove, for the next day in the garden, so that it doesn't get bad, we got told that this would be a wired request and we might be able to do it as a one time exception... The Restaurant which is connected to the hotel had okay prices for lunch. Seafood chowder and fish&chips for 35NZD together. Quality of the food was okay. Most of the rooms come non ensuite as we figured and so we had to use onr of the two communal showers down the floor and one of the two communal toilets.

We visited over the 2018/2019 Holiday period. Great atmosphere and i love the big open plan of the building. Friendly staff and my burger was amazing! Hope to visit again.

The drive to Lake Ferry Hotel doesn't seem as long once you're seated in the restaurant in anticipation of your shepherds burger and fries or the far famed fish and chips. A bit of quiet music supports the amicable undercurrent of families and friends enjoying one another's company over a fine wine, a cold beer or a barista brewed coffee. A friend told me he thought the area lifted a metre or so in the Kaikoura Earthquake. This may or may not be true, but it's no hardship gazing over the southern tip of lake Onoke, where the eponymous 'Lake Ferry' would have plied its trade in days of yore, applying my non-existent geological skills to the vexing question while helping my significant other complete the current Wordscapes puzzle. It's a tough life. But somebody's got to live it, right?

Love Lake Ferry Hotel. Great kai and great company. Best views and the meanest sunset in Aotearoa.

What a setting for a drink and a bite to eat. Taken visitors here many times and they have all loved it. The fish and chips in a basket are well worth a try.

Situated right at the end of Lake Ferry Road, you can sit back and enjoy a drink and or meal with views of the active coastline. Bed and breakfast if cheap there, though some rooms are a lot better than others. Ask about options for overnight.

Diane and Trevor stay here for 2 days room was clean and worth the price Food was good and recommend the Wings which i have 2x over 2 nights as good place to stay as visiting the lighthouse and Seals.The hotel was in the middle of a 20 year update when we were there,Food was nice(stated by my wife)and service was great for the price at 80$ per night.we will be returning asap.
