Beautiful Cathedral located just off the Octagon in downtown Dunedin (built in the early 1900’s). This impressive gothic style, is hard to miss, adding the the beauty to this city. This is a lovely building to wander through and around. The light local stone makes the interior really feel open despite the heavy stone and narrow windows. The wardens were very informative and helpful and keen to chat. Very accessible and no CHARGE. It is not to be missed during a visit to Dunedin.

Purely from a tourist point of view, it's hard to ever think there's something worth docking a star rating from a century+ old church, but being unable to visit it and enjoy the stained glass windows after 4pm does put a damper on the experience; just one more hour would be nice especially for travelers who don't come into town til that time or later usually. St Paul's stands tall above the octogon which makes for an even more beautiful sight in combination with the town hall next door. My only last thought is it wasn't as grand on the inside or ceiling as compared to the many I've seen across the world, but we are in a relatively small town so this is still far more impressive than anything we make these days.
B.
This stunning piece of architecture is a must see inside and out.. we were fortunate enough when we entered to hear the organist playing and practising which was quit a treat, you just sit there quietly an admire the stain glass windows and all the small details that have gone into the creation of this building.

St Paul's Cathedral is the mother church of the Anglican diocese of Dunedin in New Zealand. The church is located between the octagonal ring roads Moray Pl and The Octagon. The foundation stone was laid in 1915 and the cathedral was consecrated in 1919. From 1969 to 1971 a new modern choir was installed to replace the temporary choir that came from the old St. Pauls church. The altar was now free-standing, the windows high from the floor almost touched the ceiling. The organ of St. Paul's Cathedral has 3,500 pipes. her was built by Henry Willis III in London and installed in 1920.
B.
Didn't have much time to look around the Octagon but this was one of the buildings that you pick out from all the others. A really old and majestic looking church in the Octagon. The dual spires make it easy to find amid the other historical buildings in the area. You can also get side and rear views of the church as you walk along the outer octagon.
d.
Amazing historic church in centre of Dunedin. Some scaffolding work going on since fire destroyed part of the roof.
A.
Perhaps the loveliest Anglican Cathedrals in New Zealand. Sadly, a fire has damaged the chancel but work is underway to repair the roof. A very helpful guide and a beautiful interior. Bracing in the winter!
J.
Dunedin is a beautiful area and it's great to see the cathedral. Old photo was taken in 1973
E.
The cathedral looks great, soo majesty and old. Unfortunately I wasn't inside.
G.
Espouses modern-day, politically correct value systems. Propagator of socialist dogma, forsaking 500 years of Western culture and tradition. The building is nice, at least at the front, though the concrete breeze block addition at the rear does nothing for me - perhaps emblematic of what the Anglican creed has become: a nice facade, with a cheap, tawdry, addition tacked on.
T.
Stained glasses. Gorgeous. I love the place except for the kitsch high tech cross. This place would be nice for concerts.
L.
Beautiful church, the architecture is amazing and we were especially lucky to see the NZSQ rehearsing. The acoustic was amazing. A must visit if ever in Dunedin.
J.
Impressive for a NZ building !! Stained glass pieces are stunning
Y.
You can take photos inside for free.

This is a must do when in London. You can either purchase your tickets online (where you will receive a small discount) or upon arriving. Don’t be deterred by the payment, what you will experience is well worth the price of admission. There are a number of sections within the Cathedral, so also ensure you grab a map. The most break taking experience is climbing to the top of the Cathedral. This is where you can appreciate a 360 degree view of London whilst being 85m off the ground and get some fantastic shots. If you are afraid of heights attempt to surpass your fear and go right to the top, you will not regret it.

Hello, Im trying to contact Trevor James. I worked with his wife Chris, teaching in Darwin.
Im wondering how Gareth and Nicole are travelling.
If you can forward this message onto him I would appreciate it.

Built in 1918/9 the front part of the Cathedral ticks every "this is a Cathedral box". Sitting high above the city square, the front leaves you in no doubt that it commands respect. Inside the entrance is just as grand with high stone pillars supporting a very high ornate ceiling. Then I believe back in 1919 they run out of money and the alter end of the Cathedral was not completed. Some years later they decided to complete the cathedral and instead of completing it in the same style to complete the Cathedral look, they tacked on some exposed concrete pillars and breeze blocks for modern church look. It looks so out of place and wrecks the cathedral ora. It turns 5 star cathedral into a 3-4 star church. Such a pity. Go to the front and take photos just of the back section, looks much better.

It's so beautiful and historical.. I loved everything and I was mesmerized by the organ. It was my first time seeing such a large piece of musical instrument.. this is definitely everyone's stop
E.
Surprised it was open, apparently a few hours a day. Nice and quiet for reflection very kind ladies explaining some of the history
K.
A beautiful Anglican church in Dunedin.
F.
Very nice but small cathedral, coming from Europe it's nothing crazy, but lovely staff and nice architecture as always
R.
The original part of the building ("the nave") - while being a "new" building after the 19th Century "first" St Paul's - was built during WWI, and imagined completion on a grand scale (that possibly didn't think too much about geography), including a large central tower (Dunedin was still then a national business powerhouse). The newer ("sanctuary") end was added in the very late 1960s in a much more modest and modernist style. Worth a look to see how you think it all gels!

Lovely building. Grand but peaceful. Interesting mixture of neo gothic and modern. Very well designed and the old and new parts contrast in a way but also blendo well together. Very uplifting.
Went to evensong. My partner is not particulaly religious but found it meaningful.
Calm and deep. Lovely dean (vicar/ptiest) seemed humble and very genuine. It took me to another level altogether.
Few people in the congregation but that was fine. True devotion.
The choir are excellent.
There is a real quality here in general. Thoughtful and open.
Can only say a big thank you.
Thanks - it remains in my mind.
J.
A great church which maintains the Anglican style of worship - an excellent choir and a magnificent recent stain glass window with local views and flora and fauna.

Refer to Wikipedia: The Cathedral Church of St Paul occupies a site in the heart of The Octagon. The land for St Paul's Church was given by the sealer and whaler Johnny Jones of Waikouaiti.
The first parish church of St Paul was built on the site from 1862 to 1863. It was made of Caversham stone and could accommodate up to 500 people. It was not, however, well constructed.
Thomas Whitelock Kempthorne of Kempthorne Prosser Ltd was a generous supporter of the cathedral and a memorial stands inside.

We entered the cathedral at the end of midday prayers. The minister gave us the grand tour. Lots of history and very friendly staff.

I generally love these grand churches/cathedrals....but this one leaves me rather cool . It's just odd....and it's exemplified by that gawdy tacky plastic cross.

(Translated) St. Paul's Cathedral in Dunedin is inside the Octagon, in the very center of the city.
It combines elements of traditional design with later modernizations that make it very attractive. Mix traditional elements of Christianity with samples of Maori culture.
Very interesting.

(Translated) After the collapse of a first parish church in 1862, 1915-1919 built a new cathedral. It has the only large vaulted ceiling in New Zealand. In 1969, the choir was demolished, new columns and a new, modernist choir with clear glass windows were built.

(Translated) This historic cathedral is located in a corner of a large roundabout in Dunedin. The stairs of about 60 steps up to the inside of the cathedral were hard. I was surprised that the windows are large and bright inside. There were a lot of beautiful stained glass and it was amazing. I saw the independent wooden bell tower next to the building for the first time. I visited many churches abroad, but I have never seen it before. .. There are cafes, restaurants and shops around the rotary. Mouton rugs and accessories were cheaper than other cities.
