Reviews of Black Betty Cafe
B.
2nd time only have I awarded 5 stars. Black Betty is now best breakfast I have had in Christchurch. Wife's French toast is first time she completed her meal, the glutton. Myself, potato hash was just 100% spot on. And coffee is 100% understanding of course its a personal taste thing.
g.
Clear communication from the start on where to sit and how to order.
Great coffee, amazing staff, fantastic food.
We ordered and got our coffee with no pressure and left to ourselves to talk and enjoy our meal :)
We were just passing through and stumbled upon this cafe. Definitely will return and totally recommend!!! Glen and Vanesa
J.
Probably one of the best breakfasts out I have had in a while. The place was absolutely pavked and I can see why. Even so the friendly staff member let us wait a little for a free table that was quickly ready which we were really grateful for. Bloody good food. The brisket was great, the pork belly was great, i loved the iced earl grey and my buddy enjoyed his cold drip coffee. 100% recommend
M.
Found this hidden gem of best brekkie so far in christchurch. The place is always packed bcoz food is not only well presented but also tasty. You get the best value of what u paid for.
M.
This place is awesome.
The small frontage belies the size of the premises inside and once through the doors you are in a bohemian styled eatery that has cabinets of small snack dishes and cakes, and full selection of hot and cold beverages, or you can order from the brunch menu at the most interesting tables I have encountered for a long time.
The atmosphere was enjoyable with the hustle and bustled of all ages and walks of life enjoying their visit, and the excellent staff were attentive, pleasant and very efficient in making sure that all diners were served promptly and content with their meals.
I ordered smashed avocado on toast for brunch and on arrival it was hot, well presented and the serving was generous. The flavours complimented each other well and everything was cooked to perfection.
The flat white that accompanied the meal was at a just right temp, presented well and had an excellent flavour.
I'd heard good things about Black Betty's but am not easy to please so decided to check it out myself. I am glad I did and will be back for a crack at some of the other dishes they have to offer. service.
Well done team!
L.
Cool atmosphere. Foreign currency in the tabl tops quite cool. Coffee tastes great. Just one annoying that even with take away coffee insist on showing your vaccine pass. You do not require it for take a away.
T.
First time here as from out of town.
Food and service was amazing, had the sticky honey chicken as a main and they had great selection of lunch and breakfast options and my scone was yummy and the muffin was great also.
The blonde cool server we had was awesome 👏
Will come back again.
D.
One of the great places to get a coffee in town. The food is good but was shocked at the new prices. Inflation is hitting this hard and is now one of the more expensive places to grab that avo smash. Still one of the better places though.
R.
They have one of the best coffee in town. Weekend is crazy and overwhelming, so avoid going there in the weekend if you dislike full house and busy cafe.
Great food. That pork belly is to die for...
C.
Totally love our experience, food and coffee.
I had an avocado smash and single shot mocha. The food arrived relatively shorter than I was expecting and the coffee was nice and hot. 😊👍🏻
Totally recommended when you need a place that won't disappoint when it comes to both coffee and food. Especially if you don't get to eat out often. This place is a sure win.
5 stars 🖐️
K.
Epic food. Fantastic staff and service. It's a vibe. All the noms
A.
The place is always busy, with only a few tables free at any given time.
Many of the tables have a clear top, and lots of random decorations (such as foreign coins, bills) which gives something to do while waiting for your food or drink.
The food is quite expensive (compared to takeaways or the supermarket), but I don't go to cafes very often so am not sure if the price is normal for Christchurch
J.
Blonde girl with tattoos behind the till was friendly, rest of staff is awkward and not friendly. Meal was served without cutlery, and no staff came to check if meal was ok. Pretty small meal for the price.. Won't be going back.
n.
Good food - my wife and I both enjoyed our meals.
Regarding the coffee, they do quite a dark roast. Some will like it, others are less keen on dark roasts. Maybe there's an option for a medium roast, but it wasn't obvious on the menu.
I am sensitive to noise levels, I found these a bit high until people at the two adjacent tables left - the industrial décor doesn't have much to absorb sound. Others might like the busy atmosphere.
L.
Very cool place. Heard great things, food was good but could have served a lot hotter. Was tasty though. They do a pretty great chai! Nice n creamy!
M.
Well fitted out. Great atmosphere with excellent breakfast and cold brew to boot!
Staff were very attentive.
Come hungry - roll out ✌🏼
J.
We had flat white, aeropress coffee, french toast, and avo-smash toast. French toast was made with crumpets ... which was the twist I liked the least. As a big fan of french toast, i think it may be nicer to do it with a classic kind of bread. Yet still all the dishes were good. Generous portion was served.
Avo-smash was quite nice with a big chunk of avocado was on top of bread as well as smashed avocado with quinoa and soft boiled egg.
Coffee was quite nice. I went back to get another long black for takeaway.
J.
Stopped by for a quick bite and was pleased by a nice selection of cabinet food. However, then I saw the menu. Crumpet waffles! That's different! Ordered those along with an iced chocolate (made with ice cream, not lumps of frozen water) and left a very happy (and very full) customer. Funky atmosphere and cool tables made the experience all the better :)
T.
Good breakfast and friendly staff. The staff went and god Our 1 yr old son a small toy to keep him busy ~ nice gesture. The Carpark is very limited. U can park at the countdown nearby and walk over, it's only 1-2 mins walk from there.
i.
One of the best cafes I tried in chch. Lovely atmosphere and nice staff. The slow cooked pork belly is just so yum. Also enjoyed the coffee a lot. Gonna visit regularly.
L.
Food was great, my husband and I had the waffles and the granola with vanilla panna cotta, the granola was the highlight! We also tried the soft brew syphon coffee, pricey but very smooth.
It’s very busy, but we didn’t wait too long in the queue. Would definitely visit again!
E.
I had an amazing breakfast at Black Betty Cafe. There were already quite many customers at the opening time (07:30). Cozy place. Good selection of coffee and a skillful barista. I got a proper vegetarian breakfast that was worth the price. Definitely a go for a cup of coffee or brunch!
J.
I stopped in for lunch last week, on the recommendation of a friend. Loved the decor and relaxed atmosphere. I tried the coffee-rubbed brisket hash with poached eggs. The brisket was excellent and the portion was big, too big really as I couldn't finish it. Not really fair to call it a hash when the potatoes were simply roasted chunks. A very rich meal so I forwent trying the coffee or anything else. Could have used a few more tomatoes or some rocket to balance it out. I would definitely go back next time I'm in town.
C.
Wow - what a find! Amazing food, friendly staff and service was quick and they checked in to make sure everything is alright. Fantastic waffles! Will be back next time in Christchurch :)
J.
I’m not going to lie, I walked in and was overwhelmed in this place. It was a weekend, mid lunch time rush. The staff weren’t overly friendly and there wasn’t any real clear direction on getting a table or ordering food. Given the chaos of the room, they should really consider offering table service with the ability to pay upon ordering at the table (hello, it’s 2019) this way the waiters aren’t trawling through the whole establishment looking for table 32. This would also mean your coffees and food is delivered hot rather than like warm. Overall the coffee was okay and the food was above average for Christchurch.
M.
My first time to visit the cafe. The breakfast was awesome! We have ordered the Betty's Prok Belly and Egg Benedict. Delicious! We will definitely come back again.
M.
Trendy hipster kind of place, open kitchen, good coffee.
It was busy but service was quick.
Lots of recent and actually interesting magazines to read if you’re eating alone or hate your fellow diners.
Ordered the pork belly bacon stack which was very good. The pork belly was a bit of a pain to get through even with the provided steak knife, smaller pieces on the plate rather than one big slice might be better. That said it was all delicious.
Not cheap but prices are fair.
鐘.
Very kind and friendly staff. So nice to my little one. Food is awesome. Eggs Benedict so yummy. My little one loves the ham and cheese sandwiches.
C.
Super cool atmosphere that’s well presented and inviting. Staff are friendly and the food was incredible and well priced, only being surpassed by the 12/10 cold drip coffee available. If you’re in the mood for a quick brunch or liquid pump up, Black Betty is a location you can’t go past!
J.
Nice warehouse-like space, pretty good food. Free WiFi and single origin coffees are usually a plus, but charging $7 for a pourover seems like a bit of a stretch - not everyone who wants a manual brew is in for a "show", and they shouldn't price it as such, especially if the single origin of the day is a relatively easy-to-find Yirgacheffe. I'd rather they just offer a batch brew - sometimes people want a non-espresso coffee, and to be penalised for that is a bit backward for a place that purports to take coffee seriously.
M.
Yum yum yum!!! Black Betty’s is our favourite place for breaky in Christchurch although sometimes it’s so popular we can’t get a table :( Food and coffee are perfecto and staff provide quality service! Our first time here we weren’t aware of the ordering at the counter thing. A sign may be useful (can’t remember if they have one or not) and also be aware of the plants outside they may drip on ya head! Overall this place ticks all the boxes! Love love love
K.
Visited 7 years ago and the place hasn't been changed. Coffee and vibe is excellent!!
C.
Always a fantastic brunch spot. My preferred coffee house in Christchurch.
I got the Potato Hash today and it was amazing
D.
Really good coffee, gets quite busy as all good cares do. good looked very good too. cool tables with trinkets under glass for you to check out
F.
Hunted this place down, a short 10 minute stroll from the city centre. And I am glad we did.
A great space, and the coffee is excellent. We also had breakfast. The Betty's Soldiers, and the Breakie Tacos, which were both very very good.
s.
Lovely cafe, and friendly staff. Ordered salmon egg benedict, and it was awesome 😍❤️ has beautiful latte art as well! Highly recommended.
P.
What more can be said about Black Betty's that hasn't been said already? The service is fab, the coffee is great and we had a muffin (choc chip) which was the best ever! Huge too.
It is very popular so be prepared for a wait but the staff are onto it and it is not slow.
D.
Really good food served from an extensive menu plus tons of baked options. If I lived here, I'd visit often. The service is quick and friendly and while the place was busy, there was enough seating for all.
And the pour over Colombian coffee was INCREDIBLE.
L.
Great atmosphere and food!
Its nicely hidden away from other cafes and wasn't too busy, staff were lovely and food was served very quickly.
Only small thing was our brisket was smothered in sauce, great if you like your sauce but was a bit much for us!
Overall highly recommend!
A.
Fantastic coffee, love the vibe of this place!
Food? We will be back tomorrow for lunch, will let you all know.
N.
This place came highly recommended and we're so glad we did. Great coffee (strong and smooth), great vibe and friendly staff. Loved the old school meets simple but effective decor. We will definitely be back and will be recommending to others!
K.
Lovely coffee shop with delicious food! I had the avocado toast which was incredibly tasty and reasonably priced. For coffee, I tried the siphon (also spelled syphon) brew of an Indonesian bean...absolutely delicious. Black Betty makes for a fantastic brunch spot with plenty of seating.
W.
Best brunch you can get in Christchurch after talking to locals. Big breakfast was great and coffee was amazing
s.
Great place for brunch with friends, cozy little place with high chair and kid'sb place area. Great food, great service, awesome coffee! They don't take booking.
L.
Ice chocolate drink was $5.50 ($6.30 with almond milk). Menu says drink from $4.20 so be mindful as I wasn't asked for what sized drink when I ordered. Big breakfast was okay. Thank you to the manager who helped clarify the pricing for me when I visited after my initial review.
T.
Really good food and coffee.
V smiley helpful staff
E.
What a find!! We went 3 times in 4 days. Every dish was delicious. The service was quick and polite.
J.
Thoroughly enjoyed my first visit. Service was great and I really enjoyed the decor. Prices are typical. Will definitely visit again.
B.
Good breakfast would get the mushrooms on toast again.
Staff were really friendly and helpful but the service could do with some tweeks to be more efficient.
For the amount of people in a tight spot the place is really relaxing and comfortable.
D.
Excellent coffee and very good breakfast. It used to be the best long black coffee, but the quality of the coffee is very good
M.
Great food and coffee. Different way of most places for placing orders. Queue and order/pay and they will bring to your table. If you want one more drink, queue then order/pay wich may be discouraging. Would come back as food and coffee was awesome though.
A.
Love this place it’s really a great start of the day , I have been there twice for a coffee and breakfast and I will definitely visit again, I have tried ( Veg breakfast ) and my friend had ( Avocado smash )and both of them were delicious, nice and friendly staffs , it’s one of the best coffee place in Christchurch , I recommend it
W.
Fantastic food . Staff were friendly and helpful. Well worth visiting for yummy food .
S.
I'm surprised this place is not more well-known. Or maybe it is, but I just found out about it. Fantastic food.
A.
Black Betty Cafe is great as always! It was my first time back here in 6 years and it was great to see they had really stepped up their breakfast game!
Keto friendly + awesome to see the infamous three-shot 'Bongo' still around.
r.
they have some magical tea. it's amazing
S.
Always great coffee, interesting food and really friendly staff - we're in often enough to see it's consistent. It gets busy, but the team are always smiling. Great atmosphere too.
W.
Fantastic coffee, and very good food, the staff really cared
M.
Hands-down the yummiest brunch I’ve had. I went three times and it was consistently good. They are super busy on weekends so expect a delay, but I’d also recommend their counter scones and muffins if you’re on the hoof. Yum yum Ms Betty 👍🏻
D.
Really good coffee and scone. Felt service was a bit slow. More time getting food to customers quicker and less time on phone or talking to kitchen staff would be an improvement. Took 15 minutes to get a scone heated with butter which I felt was excessive.
A.
Enjoyed black Betty Cafe. The waffles were excellent! The coffee was mighty strong for a latte. Partner enjoyed Stacey's stack
S.
Went during the week for breakfast and it was bustling. Such a busy wee place. We had good service and the drinks all come out fairly quickly. All our meals were fantastic, although one who had scrambled eggs the meal was very small considering price (price was similar to everything everyone else had at the table also). Apart from this, it was a great atmosphere and would come back again.
B.
We had breakfast at this place and it was OK, they didn't have the salmon or the beef brisket available.
A.
Well, there are many great cafés to grab a coffee or a tasty meal, but I honestly enjoyed this one the most. The staff is very welcoming, the place is stylish and relaxed, the breakfast was delicious and the coffee was probably the best one I had in Christchurch.
A.
Popped in for breaky, the Avo Smash was top notch! Coffee was the best I've had in a while. Excellent service all round.
R.
Quite disappointed with my coffee today: overly bitter and burnt. To be fair they were extremely busy but I feel like if coffee is your thing, you should be able to produce a consistent cup no matter how busy. Didn't have any food but that has always been good - hopefully that hasn't dropped standards too
J.
Great food. reasonable prices. staff members are polite and very welcoming. Defenitly coming back to this lovely place =)
R.
Great friendly service and great food. Catering for all. Gf and Df options. Go get yourself full.✌🏿
M.
Delicious drinks and decent price. Just parking is a pain so plan accordingly.
E.
Excellent coffee and really good breakfast. Had the best long black ever here, but the coffee does very between very good and excellent.
Excellent breakfast items -- try the potato hash or pig daddy if you are a carnivore. Vegetarian and vegan options are also good so you can meet your whole crew there and they will all be happy. Would love to see a vegetarian option based on eggs and tomato with spinach or similar (could be a riff on Eggs Your Way).
If you get there at opening, they are still baking so you can get a fresh hot muffin as soon as it comes out of the oven (seems to be about a 15 minute wait if you arrive at opening time depending upon how the kitchen startup is progressing).
Mid-morning rush gets extremely busy, so expect a 45+ minute wait.
E.
Lovely breakfast and well priced kids menu. Quick service and friendly staff. Would come back for sure. Only reason for the 4 star was the music was so loud that I couldn’t hear the staff when ordering and it made it a bit noisy for relaxed conversation with the family.
P.
An awesome cafe. Super friendly and attentive service. Had breakfast and was very impressed with quantity, quick service and taste. Very yummy and filling. Coffee was spot on too.
K.
Nice place with great coffee. Has the breakfast tacos which were nice and a huge portion but felt like they were missing a bit of flavour.
I.
My husband and I had stopped here for breakfast before continuing our summer road trip - We’ve been driving through the South Island for almost 2 weeks and the Lemon Poppy Crumpets beat everything we’ve ever had for breakfast, anywhere! They were absolutely delicious! We aren’t really the sweet tooth type, especially my husband, and we’re so impressed with how balanced and fresh the crumpets and mascarpone were. If we ever trip back to Christchurch we will definitely be coming straight back. The staff were lovely and very positive as well, 10/10!
G.
Great atmos. Brilliant double piccolo (without having to explain what that means). Possibly the best granola I have ever had. No negatives but maybe service could have been considered slow if you were in a hurry. I wasn't.
K.
Pretty delish, quick and good service.
Would just ask extractor fans used pretty please, I've left smelling of food- just a pet peeve for me.
E.
Very busy Sunday brunch time. Americano was nice. Was the forty minute wait worth it for the pig daddy? Maybe, although the skin wasn't as crispy as I like and the potato cake was pretty dense. I'd come back to try other menu items. The decor was cool and it's obviously very popular.
T.
Really excellent food. Not surprised that there was a long queue!
G.
Absolutely my favorite breakfast in Christchurch!! Loved all of the options and delicious fresh food! Definitely eat here!
S.
Wicked cafe, coffee and breaky was outstanding and service was top notch to boot. Will be back
m.
I love coffee there. Nice staff and lovely interior.
M.
Eggs Royale and Pork Belly!! Yummo!! Well done Team...awesome food...awesome coffee....awesome service.
F.
Oh, Black Betty bam balam. Brunch done right , have some fairly epic offerings on the menu that are good no matter what you get.
Coffee from.here is always a stunner
G.
One of the best breakfasts I've had! Food was very fresh, large portions, and reasonably priced.
A.
Great cafe. One of the stalwarts that opened soon after the earthquake, and a favourite for the inner city types for a great brunch. Good coffee, and you can get a pour over or syphon (or lots of other styles). Noisy and busy.
a.
Big breakfast(with pork belly) very nice and cheap!
H.
Love this cafe, good healthy food, a great cup of coffee and very pleasant and professional staff. Love their tables, great conversation starters.
J.
Good coffee, good food and good service 5/5!!
E.
Food just felt a bit unloved, we ordered 2 breakfast which were okay just very bland. Food wasn't hot when it came out. Felt disappointed and like money wasted unfortunately. The caramel slice we had was pretty good though.
A.
Loved this place! Such a cool vibe and yummy hearty breakfasts. Coffee was awesome!
V.
Waited close to an hour after being told a 30 minute wait. Seen they were fairly busy, but notification always eases the hungry belly. Food was quite good, but could be because I was hungry.
x.
Spent $24 on a drink and a large plate of breakfast, although you can easily spend more. Great food, friendly service, and unique interior.
S.
Delicious breakfast, great coffee.
c.
1. FYI, There's a carpark at the back of the cafe, fyi. I didnt know and had parked somewhere further for a fee. Boohoo
Ordered a medium sized mochacinno, coffee taste great, chocolate is well blended in the coffee, doesn't feel chalky (when chocolate doesnt melt properly in the coffee).
Ordered a pork belly (pig daddy) dish, pork belly is about 2 in by 2in size. Taste great as well. The top layer could be more crispy if you have high standards on crispiness of the top layer.
Included in the dish is : Bacon - is a little too salty for me. Potato cake - is so-so average.
Service is good.
M.
honestly the best experience. we booked 17 for brunch...one of our party has complex anaphilactic allergies. The staff were amazing, the food was better. Thanks heaps. 😊
Z.
Can never flaut this place! They sell cold brew and cold drip! Which is very hard to find. But also cater very well for allergys. The chefs are amazing! They were happy to make somthing from scratch for me, since it wasn't peak time! Thanks team! Always love visiting when in chch!
S.
Stopped here for breakfast, had an eggs bene which was very nice as well as excellent coffee. Very busy at peak times, may have trouble finding a table. Food and coffee was delivered fairly promptly considering how busy it was. Pretty trendy decor and overall an excellent stop for food and coffee in Christchurch
S.
Great setting, funky decor and yummy coffee. Staff seemed stressed so we're not overly friendly. Seemed disconnected from customers
N.
Amazing food, but service and coffee inconsistent. Waited nearly 15minutes for a long black when it wasn't busy. Coffee was average too sadly.
H.
Unfortunately with leve 2 restrictions service was a bit all over the place and receiving our meals 40 minutes over the wait time we were told. However, staff were very understanding and apologetic about this and overall food was good and the vibes were enjoyable. Thank you Hansa for being so helpful in what seemed like a vew stressful day
K.
Maybe my expectations are too high but I've been a little disappointed the couple of times I've been there. The food was fine, didn't knock me out of my socks. The coffee also fine, definitely not the best and not the worst (although that is always subjective). The staff was pretty unhappy to be there both times. All in all it's been pretty meh and I'd probably rather go somewhere else.
r.
Any place that thinks eggs with hollandaise and bacon also needs pork belly is a great place to go! Great staff and cool merchandise too.
If you visit Christchurch it's a must. If you live there and have not been, you are missing out.
T.
Great food,great service, amazing coffee
S.
Coffee was nice except very small for medium ...food did not come with cream as specified... service was ok and it was busy.. love the decor/ tables
B.
I was having a breakfast with my daughter. I ordered a Latte, hot chocolate 🍫, French toast crumpets and Eggs 🥚 Your Way.
The French toast crumpets were moist and delicious with lots of syrup 😋.
The Eggs 🥚 Your Way is just a basic dish. You can choose between a normal white bread or grain bread topped with two sunny side eggs and a few alfalfa sprouts. However, only one of the eggs is runny while the other one is not. Nevertheless, I still enjoy eating it.
Overall, it was a good experience from this cafe.
There is plenty of seating area.
There is plenty of onsite and offsite parking 🅿.
They accept cash and EFTPOS including credit card payments (Paywave payments are available, for those who want to know).
Would I go back? Yes 😀. The rating will change - either going up 👆 or down 👇. I'll review it again in future 🔮.
Food: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5. It was yummy but one of my eggs 🥚 is not runny (slightly overcooked). However, I'm not too bothered about it.
Price: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5. Reasonably priced.
Customer service: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5. Friendly staff.
Disclaimer: Please note that this review is entirely based on my personal experience at the time of the visit
(4th July 2020). You might have a different experience than me and also, the food may or may not
suit your taste.
C.
Lovely morning at the Black Betty ! We loved the atmosphere there and my partner really enjoyed the Pig Daddy, so delicious he already wants to go back for some more ! I had the waffles and it was nice and filling. Plates were perfect sizing for a brunch.
The great choice of coffee is also very satisfying when you like good coffee.
Definitely a café to try at least once knowing you will want to go again.
Best way to start a day !
w.
I had a breakfast service was excellent fast and food was 10/10
Great place lots of room parking on the side street for 60min
Give a go you would be disappointed
S.
The atmosphere in this cafe is great and the coffee is good however, I've now been twice and felt disappointed by the vegetarian options both on the menu and in the cabinet. The wait was far too long for the food, which they had warned us but I don't recall them saying a 50 minute wait on food.
M.
They seriously need to fix/adjust their kitchen air extraction. I noticed the smokiness inside the building and several hours later my clothes and hair still stunk of the kitchen fumes. Seems a bit crazy that going out for brunch means you need to shower and wash your clothes after the experience. If it wasn't for the smell you get coated in it would be a reasonable place, pretty busy so bit cramp, food above average for cafe food.
V.
I tried the French toast crumpet with fruit compote which was very nice (14.50) - with sweetness from the raspberries balanced by the tartness of the yogurt. Not sure the bananas are necessary, but you get those too. Good flat white - only had to go with one sugar where I usually need 2. For the purist, they also have a coffee tasting set if you want to explore their variety of beans.
W.
Loved this cafe, we went there just before the lockdown, very nice and welcoming staff, amazing coffee and the free wifi and comfy tables and chairs allow for a good work space if you need to get some work done on your laptop.
(My only problem was, as a non-meat eater, that there was an overwhelming smell of bacon when we arrived - but ofcourse, some people wouldn't mind that).
F.
First time I've been disappointed here. Visited many times. After raving about how good it is - met a friend for brunch. Both our coffees were almost lukewarm but stupidly we drank them as thirsty/hungry. Both our meals were definitely below par for some reason.
Decided to order 2 more coffees and again - far from hot. Whole place was not super busy so really don't understand.
Finally and perhaps most concerning was a definite lack of enthusiasm from the first 2 staff who served us. Sorry Black Betty but you really do need to lift your game. You have some serious competition out there now! You've got a great venue & cabinet food...but the rest has really slipped since my last visit pre Christmas.
S.
Food coffee and atmosphere on point!
D.
This place was ace. I had the coffee adventure which is a demo of three brewing methods. I have a lovely chat with the barista and she was very good at talking and focusing on producing a superb coffee. One of my top 5 coffee experience. Oh food is excellent and atmosphere is great on a Sunday morning.
S.
Great food, rich in flavour. You honestly can't go wrong eating breakfast here. Place is always busy, so don't expect a quick bite to eat. If you have a bit of time to spare, you won't be disappointed.
A.
Simply amazing coffee - best almond milk cap I’ve ever had!! So good I’ve gone on the hunt for Switch espresso beans so I can take some home with me in the hope of replicating the experience.
Breakfast burgers were delicious - love the spinach, salsa and excellent bacon but could take or leave the potato cake thing.
Service was good considering how busy they were on a Saturday morning. We’ll be back :)
Free wifi with Facebook check in.
B.
Clearly the best brekkie joint in town, if not, the Southern Hemisphere.
Staff are top class professionals. Amazing coffee, food, cleanliness, atmosphere, you name it, they’ve bossed it.
Went here 10 days in a row and now I’m skint but loved every single second.
Juicy
E.
Great cafe for coffee and food. Popular amongst those working close by in the CBD. Always busy but the wait it worthwhile! They have a meeting room with sliding door which patrons are welcomed to used but they'll charge if you close the door (and use it as a meeting room), otherwise it's like any other spaces in the cafe.
Staff are always helpful and friendly. Prices are very reasonable.
A.
Absolutely gorgeous breakfast and super fast service!
Ended up having the big breakfast and my word was it exactly that, everything was cooked perfectly, with good quality bread, sausages, bacon and potato gratin!
Staff were very attentive and friendly.
Very happy with this place and would definitely consider coming back another time.
v.
Beautiful coffee. Tastes awesome. Wholesome food
S.
Good warm environment and tasty food
B.
I would say the burger was as great as Fergburger.
D.
Great food and beautiful coffee. Thumbs up!

Lovely food. I took my own milk (lactose free) and had an iced chocolate but they charged me full price! When I queried this, they did refund me a large portion of the cost. Also, friends I was with ordered two bags of coffee beans, but only one bag was delivered to the table. When they queried this, the restaurant apologised and explained only one bag had been charged for. This then meant my friends had to go back and make another transaction. Customer service needs improving.
M.
Excellent food and coffee and very friendly staff. We were only in town for a few days but Black Betty was definitely one of the favorite places we ate in New Zealand. The food was excellent (I had something with mushrooms and haloumi and it was great) with lots of vegetarian options. The pastries were great too. Really enjoyed the syphon coffee demonstration. The staff were all very friendly and even though it was our first time we were made to feel like regulars. Definitely hope to return!
C.
Staff ignored me when I first walked in, no signs to say pay upfront at the cashier and it was lunchtime and the tables and chairs out front had water everywhere and had not been wiped down. Not to harp too much, but the hanging plants over the seating must have just been watered. Food was of a good standard, but the yolk on my eggs Benedict was a little too firm. Toasted bread it was served on was a highlight. My fiance had the big breakfast but was not asked how she wanted her eggs so they came poached. She said she did not mind poached, but each element on her plate had it's own different seasoning - so it was not under seasoned - but not much thought went into how those flavors might or might not compliment each other. Lost one star for not acknowledging me when I made eye contact and said hello and the young male turned back to chatting with another female staff member and picked up his coffee for another sip. On a positive note, the place is relaxed (a little too relaxed for the staff) and it draws a diverse crowd of people. Oh and they lost the second star because my fiance did not enjoy her food. But they would have that feedback if they took the time to ask. Oh yes, I forgot, the first thing they did was take our money, etc, etc,
Lastly, huge points for speed after you place your order...if you are in a hurry this is the place to go.

Got the family, ranging in age from 1 - 82, together for a family breakfast on a Saturday morning and was very impressed. The breakfast stack went down a treat and the kids loved the danish pastries and other delights in the cabinet. The bacon and maple syrup crumpet concoction was delicious and the traditional breakfast was excellent value. Coffee was superb! My wife Anne and me are huge fans and believe it is the best coffee we have tasted in NZ. Service was excellent. There was a small but well thought out play corner for the kids and we had a delightful morning.
K.
Great bustling breakfast spot in Christchurch. The coffee was excellent. You order at the bar and breakie will be delivered to your table. The food was super fresh and excellent portions if you’re hungry! I had the potato hash with poached eggs, hollandaise and bacon. Was excellent. Lovely red pepper relish under the potatoes which added a nice flavour punch you don’t always find in regular breakfasts. The space is large and airy with lots of natural light, which makes it so nice and cozy on a winter morning.
D.
Great food. And coffee. Service was ok considering they were busy.
A.
The food was very nice and recommended but prices are high for the portion size
M.
Great coffee and enjoyed the vegan creamy mushroom on ciabatta.
M.
Delicious fresh breakfast and refreshing coffee or hotchocolate...
K.
This beautiful little cafe serves up some pretty damn good coffee, and the food amazing!
M.
Decent food and ambience. Nice deco and staff service.
I.
The coffee here is exceptional. Roasted in house and brewed to perfection. The food here is great too, made by an in house chef, this is a perfect lunch spot, but unfortunately that's no secret, so sometimes there's a bit of a wait, but always well worth it.
S.
Dog friendly is a bonus, eggs and hollandaise sauce is their specialty - primo for brunch.
K.
Lovely cafe. Friendly staff. Great ambience. Can be very busy at peak times. May have to wait 5 min for a takeaway coffee, but it is well worth it! Switch Coffee - delicious! They specialise in the whole coffee experience, such as Syphon and Cold Drip. Really interesting to watch them make it in front of you. I recommend the BLAT (so yummy!)
A.
Food is really good and the coffee is excellent lots of different styles. They definitely pride themselves on great coffee and it shows buy the excellent craftsmanship that goes into each cup. The food is also great!
S.
Must be one of the best cafés I have been to. I travel the whole country and I have been into some great cafes but this one is stand alone. I've never had a bad coffee there, food is awesome. A must visit
T.
I just loved the style and feel about the cafe and the staff were very welcoming also the coffee was great 😊
C.
A vibrant and popular cafe, it's hard to find seats especially at lunch time. Coffee tastes okay but what I love most about this place are the fond memories I had, enjoying coffee and small talks, with some of my treasured friends.
S.
Delicious breakfast/lunch food and excellent decaf coffee!
Had the Pork Belly and Stacey's Stack which were both delicious. Very good at accommodating coeliac people. The coffee was superb. Well worth a visit!
M.
I'm a bit fussy with snack foods and hate sweet things so it's hard for me to find a snack at cafes that is small enough to be considered a snack but not a super sweet cake or slice. I ordered the Bounty Bar Slice purely because it has a little sign saying "refined sugar free" . Oh my lord it was amazing! They have heaps of gluten free options which is awesome for those customers.
H.
In the top three of my favored cafe's in Christchurch. Great atmosphere and design, really good coffee, service is quick and friendly. Love hanging out there with my friend to catch up and have brunch.
A.
Such an awesome spot for a weekend breakfast or brunch. Always a bustling vibe in here, staff are high energy and lovely. But it never seems too busy they obviously have great systems in place, the wait is never long and the staff keep their cool even in the busiest times. Food is high quality and the interior design harkens back to the coolest of old Christchurch.
J.
Most likely the best cafe ever. Really, ever!
The coffee is so good, smooth and well-made, you don't need to add sugar.
The menu, food and cakes are amazing.
Great tea options as well, perfectly brewed.
And the cafe has a great vibe.
J.
Excellent coffee and very good breakfast. It used to be the best long black coffee, but the quality of the coffee is very good.
N.
Excellent breakfast and probably the best coffee in town. Very friendly staff
A.
Black Betty deserves it's great rating. The breakfast and coffee are delicious and served by friendly staff in a hip café. The pork belly stack is gluten free friendly and staff pay particular attention to the needs of coeliacs. I often struggle to find good decaf coffee but Black Betty was a winner!
N.
Great for brunch and coffee. Kids friendly
A.
A little underwhelmed by the 'Big Breakfast'. I recall a few years ago being amazed by the same but now smaller and less impressive.
K.
Great cafe in the heart of the CBD. Popular with the polytechnic staff and students. Excellent coffee and great food - both cabinet and kitchen prepared. Great for just a coffee or a sit down meal. Takeaways also catered for.
L.
Great coffee and ambiance. The pork & apple pie was a big hit! We'll be back.
B.
Not bad food but incredibly long wait times! 1hr 40 min for 8 meals, and no notice of it
M.
Great Bennè - would be back if I were based in Chch
N.
One of our favourite places for breakfast in Christchurch! Absolutely gorgeous huge portions. Simple eggs turned into piece of art. My fav dish is Avocado smash ( today without bacon, a vegetarian option with grilled holoumi ). Amazing waffles with lemon curd, berries and ice cream!!! All dishes have great presentation and even better taste! Highly recommended!!!
g.
Great food ,staff and atmosphere
L.
Delicious brunch here after mentions of this place. Had dietary/allergy and they happily cater to my requirement. Love the atmosphere and decor.
R.
We went twice to Black Betty's for breakfast while on holiday and the food was so delicious! The service and vibe is amazing too. A must-go for food in Christchurch! It will exceed your expectations.
J.
Great service & great food well priced. Atmosphere was excellent with a fantastic selection of old heavy metal classics to keep the toes tapping. I amagine a business model such as this would be very well recieved in my home town of Wellington!
J.
Finally got one coffee shop with pour over cafe in NZ. Sausage roll is too salty to me. Pork belly is good. Reasonable price.
C.
Excellent coffee! Not a great service... the place was busy but they didn't tell as for breakfast for 2 is gonna take 44 min... food was ok.
D.
Place is looking tired and dirty. Glasses are grubby. Food is boring and over priced. Needs a burst of energy to pump some life into it.
G.
Lovely coffee shop with delicious food! I had the avocado toast (Avo Smash) which was incredibly tasty and reasonably priced. For coffee, I tried the siphon (also spelled syphon) brew of an Indonesian bean...absolutely delicious. Black Betty makes for a fantastic brunch spot with plenty of seating
J.
Good coffee and cakes in a nice old building, not quite as good as the Addington Coffee Co-op, but close.
B.
Wow!! thats how I class black Betty's cafe absolutely wonderful service food that will blow your mind I recommend the big daddy sounds mildly weird but is soo good and if that wasn't enough they make one of the best coffees iv had since being in Christchurch I'd give more stars if I could they should all be proud 🤩🤩
M.
One of Christchurch's top cafés. Great vibe, good food (both menu and cabinet), great coffee, and despite often being very busy, the customer service never slips and the coffee is always served fairly promptly in my experience.
Parking can be a little tricky and don't go here during the busy periods if you're looking for somewhere quiet to relax. Also not particularly ideal for young children, but a great venue if none of that worries you.
A.
Never had a bad experience here. Food is outstanding and reasonably priced, staff are very friendly and appear to all enjoy their jobs, coffee is outstanding. Black Betty's never fails to deliver
J.
Great Coffee and their Granola is the best! Only drawback is the staff can come across as a little arrogant, which has been a consistent theme over the years I've been going here Aside from that the food and coffee is very good.
T.
I went here with the whole family and everyone enjoyed it. Be sure to arrive before 2:30 PM or a lot of the food choices shut down. All the food was very tasty and they take their coffee very seriously, which I appreciate. All the baristas seemed to be pretty trendy and into the whole scene, which I also appreciate. It kind of reminded me of Portlandia-in-Christchurch.
F.
The rose raspberry slice was delicious! So was the soy mocha. Have a look at the spoons, so pretty! ;)
The interior is warm and cozy due to wood as main material. Staff was medium friendly.
E.
Best Cafe in Christchurch. All their menu options are not just beautiful but also filling and the almond milk in the coffee is the creamiest I've ever seen any cafe make in the city!
M.
I love to have my business meetings here, I love the coffee, the vibes and I find their competitive advantage selling fair trade products admirable. Well done, guys!
P.
Great food and well priced. Had brekky here and coffee was a godsend....music a tad loud for early morning, but that may just be me. Would eat here again.
T.
Amazing coffee. Excellent food. Very popular so gets busy, but highly recommend a visit.
K.
Came here for breakfast on a Saturday morning, along with every other person in Christchurch. That being said, the food and coffee arrived in good time and was really nice. They also have a good selection of appetising cabinet.
G.
Asked a few locals were to get great coffee and food and they all said " Black Betty." Spot on ! Coffee was amazing as was the quiche. Thank you for the experience and hope to get back to NZ soon.
J.
It was fine, my husband liked it more than I did, so I'm going with 4 stars. The girls working there were super friendly though! :)
L.
Great place to work. Prices are reasonable and staff are really bubbly and welcoming, will definitely be coming here more!
D.
Very tasty! Fairly quick considering they were at capacity
U.
This was an easy 5 stars. Service was good, food came out very fast, best coffee I've had since i've been in NZ. I love what they've done with the place too, very unique and good vibes.
A.
Nice food, price to match.
E.
Read good reviews online about this place and decided to give it a go! Absolutely delicious, both very very happy with our two choices. Big breaky and the Stacy stack. Would 100% recommend
S.
Great chicken nachos!
F.
Awesome coffee. Great food. Everything high quality. And you should treat yourself to a "syphon-coffee" and a demonstration about preparing it. And you got super awesome nice and well trained staff and barrista. A must experience place.
J.
GREAT breakfasts.. Average coffee. The staff have a tendency to be curt when they’re busy, but don’t take it personally! The food’s worth it.
S.
Great local. Wicked menu, fab coffee and top notch team of people. Thanks for providing such a lovely place to come too. Love your cup recycling at the door
D.
Clearly very popular as it was quite busy. I had the bacon butty which was ok but just kept falling apart. The service was ok. The coffee was good though. Overall it just felt a bit like it was trying too hard to be a 'hipster' hangout. Oh and no free Wi-Fi! What's up with that???
C.
Service was fast and efficient. Menu was great, food was yum. Inconsistent friendliness of staff. Some very helpful, some could use some coaching.
B.
Had vegetarian big breakfast and Mexican breakfast. Both were really good. Very good coffee. You get syphon coffee brew here. Chocolate Raspberry brownie was good too.
p.
Went for the first time today. great feel to the place, the staff were great and I really enjoyed the food presented to me. happily return
G.
The staff are awesome, 5 stars for each front of house staff member.
The coffee I great - food was awesome (Avocado smash)
Would travel from Auckland daily for my morning coffee.
S.
Amazing amount of sauce on the potato hash.
C.
Food and atmosphere awesome, a popular place! Fun decor.... loved my meal... shame about the staff. Luckily there are plenty of other things going for it. Recommended if you BYO good company :)
R.
Fantastic coffee and amazing breakfast
H.
Have a creamy mushrooms and big breakfast today. The food quality is not good as before and the waiting time is tooooo long.... little bit disappointed ..... hope they will improve soon
M.
Locally roasted coffee- check. La Marzocca Espresso machine - check. Trophy winning baristas- check. Industrial vibe and good nibbles- check. Ticking all the boxes for a 3rd Wave coffee shop is Black Betty. Definitely returning for the syrupy ristretto. Well done!
A.
Approved for Best breakfast in New Zealand.
B.
As my wife would put it a really funky place if you like things a little bit different to the normal type of cafe it has a real good vibe to it
E.
Mushrooms on waffle was okay although the waffle wasn’t very tasty. Coffee arrived after we had finished eating. Nice atmosphere.
G.
Great food. Quick and efficient service with good coffee.
G.
Great little space, bustling and energetic. The coffee is fantastic and the selection of food on offer is top notch. Great to see a cafe offering as many different brewing methods as they do too.
C.
Just stopped for a coffee, but they do those well! Great tables (by the windows) and plenty of interesting food on offer as well. Gets very popular, so be prepared to queue, and wait.
C.
Hip breakfast and coffee joint a bit out of downtown. Really lovely creative breakfasts with lots of choice. Just don't try and put cream in the aeropress coffee, they will scold you for your poor life choices. 😉
P.
Never disappointed having brunch and coffee here with friends. Great vibe and atmosphere. Close to the CPIT (Ara). Can enter through Madras St but this is a one way street. If you miss a turn, can turn left and enter via Manchester with plenty of car parks at the back.
K.
Love it, my new favourite place to hang out. If it's really busy, as it usually is, you can sometimes grab the cupping room down the back for a smallish group.
Update: Still great, but they have just stopped being open in the evenings :(
C.
Best eggs Benedict I've had hands down! As they say good things take time.
R.
delicious breakfasts. Great for something different instead of cookie cutter Cafe food.
C.
Amazing! Great food
M.
Everything it should be and more...staff,excellent: coffee, great: food, upper class: atmosphere, first class...say no more
H.
I find this place a bit on the pricey side, but the quality of food and coffee is really good. I like the urban but somewhat vintage feel to the cafe. Often busy over the lunch hour what with the polytech across the road.
C.
Nice coffee and brunch
R.
I usually come here for some of my business meeting as it's a good central spot. The coffee is wonderful and the food is always delicious.
P.
Crumpet French toast, yum. With bacon, walnuts and banana.
P.
Nice set up with a mix of old industrial and contemporary interior. My choice of Mango and Chia pudding was great. Not my usual choice at all.

F.
great place for a casual meal. Food is lovely and the atmosphere is buzzing. Very busy with great coffee

Good coffee but don't go there in a hurry. Usually busy and only one or two baristas with 1000 coffees to make

Only having one person on the counter makes ordering slow going. Food and coffee is ok without being great. Breakfast and a coffee for around $20.
