Reviews of Poppies Cafe & Restaurant
j.
Wow! Knock out performance from these guys! Food was amazing, service friendly, professional and smart. Classy local art work- not many places with a couple of Marilyn Webb pieces on the wall. Well worth it if you want a special meal out, we found it an upmarket restaurant the evening we were there. More Bistro than Cafe!
A.
The service and the food was beyond what I normally expect in a cafe. Our wait staff (a man with hair tied back) was very attentive and accommodating of our kids and the crem brûlée looked like it was from an expensive restaurant
b.
Why is no one talking about the venison pie??
So returned to Poppies after my last visit four years ago with my partner and we still love it. It's a quirky but simple café that serves great food..pretty sure my salad came out of their garden that morning. Staff were friendly, quick and efficient. As mentioned I had the venison pie it was wonderful and definitely exceeded my expectations. We'll be back next time we need to escape our busy lives in Queenstown.

We were at Poppies for dinner on Friday night. Three of us had Lamb Wellington and all three of us enjoyed them very much. The lamb was perfect it is making my mouth water just talking about it. The other members of our party were just as happy with there meals.
The service was great a very enjoyable evening all around.
Thank you very much Poppies
K.
Didn't know what to expect when getting curry at this café, but it was delicious and we were happy with our meals.
R.
Lovely meal with friends! It is nice to see a local place in town making all their own breads, dips, dressing etc! Friendly staff & nice patio to sit out on in the warm weather. We will be back again.
D.
Fantastic food! Great service and a mean steak salad
S.
Wonderful dining experience. We recently had the pleasure of enjoying a great meal at Poppies with superb service. Loved the salmon ! Creme Brulee was devine . Easy on line booking. Recommend.
A.
Lovely food, but quite steeply priced and a little chilly inside. The staff all worked really hard but it was a little disappointing to see some weren’t wearing face masks given the current government rulings and concerns with regard to the pandemic.
K.
One of the most popular restaurant in Twizel single restaurant options here are quite limited. Ordered fillet steak, pork belly, pasta and bean burrito. Steak was okay but pork belly was a little hard to chew and even cut. Pasta and bean burrito were good. Sticky date pudding was nice as well! Service was good and prompt albeit the huge volume of customers at night.
M.
What a lovely cafe and restaurant. Arrived after 2pm, but was able to order off b/fast menu so had Poppies Breakfast. Just amazing, well worth a stop. Thanks.

We popped in on our way to Tekapo. We ordered the Venison Pie and the Pan Fried Salmon risotto. The venison was served hot, absolutely fantastic for a cold day, and has plenty of meat in the pie. The salmon was seared beautifully with grains of salt. The risotto was light and beautifully made. Fantastic meal with really friendly staff.
P.S. - pick a seat by the wood burner on a cold day. Simply divine.
Edit: we popped by again on our way home to pick up a muffin and coffee. We had the most friendly service ever. Highly recommend this place and will definitely drop by again.
W.
Easy to find parking, good food, friendly staff, very clean toilets. Good place to chill and relax over breakfast. Pancakes come with toasted banana which were delicious! Peppermint water was a nice touch too. Roasted mushrooms (that came with the breakfast platter) were delicious too!

My biggest regret of our two weeks in NZ is not eating at this restaurant both nights we were in Twizel! Seriously, there's nothing wrong with eating at the same place consecutive nights when there are so few options in town, the price point is pretty similar, and one option is clearly the best. We made a reservation for 6:30pm on a Wednesday evening in August. The place filled up while we were there, but I think it would have been possible to get a table without a reservation, since it was low season. My husband and I ordered the fish special and salmon salad, with cheesecake to end. Everything was incredible, and I'm saying this from a slightly-snobby-foodie and annoying-health-nut point of view. Both dishes came with sides, and both were very high quality and creatively made. The salmon was the freshest I've ever tasted, and the bed of veggies it came on was to die for. Service was attentive, friendly, and on point. The atmosphere was relaxing and warm, and the facilities were clean. I cant recommend this place enough!!

Located off the highway in the little town of Twizel.
Was an excellent meal
The lamb curry was cooked perfectly, was surprising to find such nice pappadam and tasty curry.
The meat was soft and succulent. It melts in your mouth
The salmon was really good. Your fork pokes through and through. Yet its so crispy!
Lovely combination with the veges.
The fries were beyond this world. Its so soft inside yet crispy outside and it is nicely salted.
Strongly recommend this place for a meal. (Maybe even 2!)
K.
We had breakfast here. Coffee was great. Food was delicious and well presented.
The service was excellent. Toilets very clean.
C.
Great service with very patient staff. Food was excellent as was the coffee and smoothies. You pay for a bit more upmarket product if that’s what you want. We loved it and the generous servicing made a late breakfast last well into the afternoon.
D.
Very decent fare in a town without a traffic signal. Expect more than a ham sandwich and you will be pleasantly delighted. Good food. Good beer. Come for starters and dessert, or delve into the mains.
S.
Very nice food and ambience. It is one of few restaurant in Twizel.
The soup of the day was really nice. I think it was Spinach and Spicy Beans.
They topped our burrito with lots of cheese, which I found a bit unusual. It tasted pretty good though. Please check with them if you would like to customize it by having less/no cheese.
N.
Great location with beautiful outdoor area. Food was excellent for breakfast, would happily go here again - was a little surprised that they weren’t checking vaccine passports however.
n.
Sides / snacks are good value and well prepared. Friendly staff. We didn't do main courses but they looked a bit pricey and not a big range on the menu, so check the menu before you go.
M.
Great place to stop. I got fish & chips. Hubby had the venison pie. Amazing food, good quality! Salad was do yum. Will be back!
L.
Fantastic food and service! I had the fresh fish (grouper) of the day and it was delicious. I saved room for dessert and WOW! I'm glad I did. I highly recommend Poppies Cafe.
A.
Amazing fish of the day - salmon risotto with Brill fish on top. Highly recommended for this, we were very pleased with the order. The cheesecake dessert was also very good - a bit custardy and reminds me of my grandma's cooking. All in all, a good experience.
A.
Nice hot chocolate -and the carbonara was delicious! Staff friendly and very reasonable prices. The toasted sandwiches were also nice. Although I didn't eat any of the desserts, they looked amazing. Would come back here again!
g.
Good coffee, freindly staff but sadly the cheese scone was VERY dry. Still a great place to stop on Queenstown/Christchurch drive to break the trip and the service was awesome!.
S.
absolutely love this place. we stopped in for dinner and were blown away with the quality of the lamb curry, salmon and fondant dessert. All first class.
S.
We had duck (moist with crispy skin) & tender rack of lamb. Perfect amount with tasty veges. Wasn't planning to have desert but wanted to see if it was as good as main and wasn't disappointed. Good coffee, service and selection. Hope to get back before other tourists return.
M.
Awesome food. Best steak ever! Lamb rack and rest incredible. Totally worth every penny :)
B.
Very underwhelming for the price and we were surprised by the high praise on here and TripAdvisor. The Goats Cheese Souflee entree fell flat with really no creamyness and was quite bland: it set the tone for the rest of the meal. The handmade tagliatelle was close to double the usual thickness at 5-6mm (can be seen from ours and others photos), similar to hokkien noodles, and the sauce was bland. The accompanying salad was undressed and seemed like it was out of a packet. The only saving grace was the chorizo (an extra $5). The lamb rack was well cooked but had the flavour of an average home kitchen, coated in a thick wholegrain mustard that somehow had little flavour. The rosemary in the rosti was very sharp and beetroot too sour. The best thing on the menu was the side of vegetables which were surprisingly amazing, I'd devour a whole plate of them anytime. With one glass of rose the total was $100, which is outrageously overpriced for the quality. I think this place suffers from being a big fish in a little pond, anywhere else this place would be a 3.5. Overall, well presented bland food. Sadly cannot recommend.
T.
Very good. The homemade pasta was quite tasty and the eggs Benedict was very good. Loved that sauce on the Benedict.
L.
Good customer service and delicious food. Coffee is good too.
G.
This is a very nice restaurant with good food and friendly staffs. Love their fish and chips and Special Fish dish.
k.
Delicious salmon and roast vege salad for lunch. Hubby had orange roughie fish and chips which was really good too. Highly recommend this place. Staff so friendly.
L.
Delicious food and wonderful service, very inviting and friendly. Partner had eggs benedict (wonderful) and I had pumpkin risotto which was also divine. Highly recommend.
A.
Thankyou the service was great and the food was delicious. Great end to our wonderful stay here in Twizel.
X.
Good food and service. Was told that it is one of the best restaurants in Twizel and indeed I was not disappointed.
S.
Excellent food and amazing staff. Our waitress Rachel was very friendly and provided us with amazing service. Would highly recommend eating here and definitely worth the drive from Tekapo.
J.
This was the only restaurant which was opened in the early morning and also, served fresh breakfast instead of pre cooked. Customer service was good. Even though they were packed I didn’t have to wait long for my order. Bathrooms were clean and there is space to sit outside as well, which I really liked. Overall, good place to eat in Twizel. :)
S.
Amazing meal! The goat cheese appetizer was beatifully constructed and tasted even better! The chocolate fondant dessert was the best one I've ever had ( and I've had many across the globe). If you are in Twizel this is a must.
F.
Always call in here on way through Twizel or staying at the township .. never fails to deliver great meals
R.
Best for breakfast and dinner..nice location.
Stop on the way to Lake tekapo to Queenstown
S.
The Beef pie.. a special I Believe was a amazing.. always worth a visit when in Twizel.

H.
Great kids food, awesome staff and service. We loved it there
G.
Service was fantastic. The cheese scone was very dry but coffee was lovely
M.
Wild venison and lamb Wellington were both superb as was the friendly service. Can recommend.
C.
Fish of the day with risotto. The fish is fresh and the risotto is creamy.
The cheesecake is moist and the sorbet is quite good.
P.
We had a beautiful meal tonight. Service and food was outstanding.
B.
Friendly staff, good food. Will be back
R.
Excellent food and service. The menu is great and innovative. First class food in Twizel
A.
Happen to stop by along the road for breakfast. The food was fantastic, especially the omellete, and the coffee was good. Nice cozy atmosphere.
W.
I had delicious fish and chips. Fish was excellent as were the chips and salad. It wasn't cheap but it was well worth it. Lovely service too.
N.
Dinner and dessert both tasty 👌🏼
i.
Very nice vegetarian meal! Nice soup as well.is a must stop by to enjoy your vegetarian meal.
G.
Fantastic lamb curry! Perfectly cooked fries. Wonderful customer service. Highly recommend stopping here for lunch! We were starving after our tramp in Aoraki, and left feeling very full and content.
N.
They were busy when arrived but explained that but service and food was great.
R.
Had coffee and slice but staff did not check vaccine passport even though it was not particularly busy.
B.
Excellent service. Meat normally served very rare. You may need to ask for things to be cooked up a little more but they are happy to comply. Nice sized meals. You shouldn't leave hungry
A.
Poppies never fails me. Meals are spot on.
Cheers Lorna, Mike and the team.
Y.
Great place.. & surroundings.. Good food & service.
K.
The food is top notch and wait staff are lovely. The atmosphere could be better but no complaints whatsoever.
D.
Great toasted sandwiches, very efficient service and if you are in a hurry. Close tomthevlake.
N.
great coffee and amazing food great spot to stop in the Mackenzie country
D.
Service was very good. Decent sized portions for the meals. Good for groups
A.
I don’t do reviews however this restaurant deserves to be put on the culinary map as a must do in the area. As a table of five we ordered a selection of dishes and every plate was wonderful. The steak was so tender as to be described by our table as slow cooked. The dessert menu was a selection of all my favourite sweets making it a difficult choice. Fine food in generous portions. Highly recommended.
R.
Great gluten free options, especially delicious breakfast omleette. Good coffee. Friendly service and a nice warm fire!
J.
Good eggs Benedict and choc/banana muffin
T.
Nice service, ok food, oldie vibe!
R.
We had lunch here and we enjoyed it. The food is reasonably priced and great. They had a good choice on the menu. Staff were friendly and service prompt. The venison pie was especially nice.👍
D.
Great food served with a genuine smile!
Stopped in for breakfast based on TA reviews and were not disappointed! Plenty of seating, clean, sweet servers, charming atmosphere and delicious food. I had the omelet, toast, side of their homemade jam. Hubby had the Poppies breakfast, hearty and all superb. Wish I lived close by so we could go often.
A.
The evening menu in here is just fantastic and fully justifies the slightly higher prices. Deceptively simple dishes with an extra level of subtle flavours, and so beautifully presented. Save room for a creme brulé served with a little kiwi-shaped wafer!
C.
Exceeded expectations! I got the pasta special and my husband got the lamb curry. It was after a three hour hike so admittedly we were famished, but the service, presentation, and quality of food were excellent. Great choice for dining in Twizel!
V.
We visited this place looking at it's reviews. Interior and ambiance are good. We stopped here for lunch. My wife ordered Salmon salad and myself and my kid ordered Lamb curry with rice.
Salmon salad was good but was costly as per the portion. Lamb curry was totally customized. Not authentic. Customization is okay but lets not kill the spirit of the dish. Rice portion can be bit more as the current portion is suitable only for kids. Coffee was nice though.
S.
Wonderful time at Poppies. Had the homemade pasta, my companion the market fish. So good returned another night and we switched. The Scott's Harbormaster IPA was great, and the cream brulee too, as was staff.
K.
For small town dining this was delightful. Service was personable but not over bearing and the food was clearly lovingly prepared. Portions are generous and filling. We both had the lamb rack and it was a bit odd - 2 of the 3 pieces were very tender and flavourful but on both our plates 1 was really chewy and not very good. Didn’t seem worth mentioning as we’d both eaten 2 of 3 pieces when we recognised that but not sure what happened. The potato rosti was a great side as were all the veg. The seating feels a bit like a cafeteria although they try and warm it up with some art. Could use candles or something, but would still go even if nothing with the interior changed as the food and service was lovely and worth it!
P.
I've popped in here a few times now on my travels up and down the country and the food is consistantly very good. I am always particularly Impressed with the Poppies Breakfast.
The staff are generally good value too, very friendly and helpful, in fact the whole ambience of the place is quite excellent.
😊
RECOMMENDED.
C.
Lovely welcoming interior, spacious, with a variety of menu items, delicious chicken salad. Great hosts too.
S.
Unassuming Cafe just off the highway with amazing food .The lamb curry was delicious with just enough heat and the salmon fillet salad was accompanied by a sweet creamy horseradish sauce that worked with the perfectly cooked fish. Not a combination we expected but, it was amazing! Well done.
T.
Stopped here for coffee and a scone. Enjoyed it so much returned for the salmon and veggies for dinner. Excellent atmosphere service and food.
M.
Our family of four adults and 2 toddlers went to lunch today at Poppies. It was a spur of the moment decision which turned out to be a most pleasant experience. Lovely friendly staff. Superb menu and the children were given toys and colouring in to amuse them over lunch. All meals were beautiful. Value for money and the setting is great.
C.
Had a great lunch outside while passing through Twizel. The food was fresh and beautifully presented and we had some delicious local beer too! The service was quick and friendly.
G.
Great Lunch great staff 👍🏻
B.
We had dinner at Poppies last night. What an experience! We shared a Goat Cheese Souffle & Salmon Tataki for entrees, Steak and Rack of Lamb with Veges for our main meal followed by Sticky Date pudding for dessert. OMG, we could not fault any part of the evening. From when we arrived, our waitress was welcoming & appeared passionate about her position. The food was outstanding. We will be back when next in Twizel.
U.
Nice atmosphere. Quite a big place. Only had a lemonade and a smoothie. Smoothie was great though, banana and honey. Girl serving told us kitchen was closed for another half hour several times despite we said we were there for a few drinks and a maybe a snack line a piece of cake. Almost like she just wanted us to leave so she could chill out as we were the only customers.
M.
Enjoyed our meal - the name potentially understates the standard of cuisine which was very good. Staff were pleasant and welcoming. Food was well presented and tasty with large portions. Would happily recommend if staying in twizel.
S.
Wasn't the best but wasn't the worst. Would go back though.
v.
Food was reasonable but not exceptional. Ordered fish & chips, pancake and soup of the day. The only acceptable one in my opinion was the soup.
Pancake was bad. My Friend ordered it. Dry and tough. Tried to provide feedback, got an answer of “that’s why there is syrup for you to go with it”. Really thankful that it was not the first pancake my Friend had in her life. Imagine first sex but it was bad and people told you, that’s why there is lube. It was around NZD18.
Staff’s attitude was pretty mediocre, close to being impatient and impolite, although did try to offer complimentary in-house coffee to us, not without having to receive that stinky eyes from her as side. We rejected politely. Judge for yourself. The only edible part was the caramelised bananas.
P.
Dinner at poppies cafe is always the best. Great foods, good customer services and good range of beers including local craft beers. Lamb curry and home made pasta are my favourites with bread and dip as an entree. Great place to go for meals.
M.
Four of us enjoyed a lovely meal at Poppies. Twizel is a small village that has limited eating options and Poppies is a standout option for dinner offering quality and reasonable pricing. Our group enjoyed housemate pasta, lamb curry, pork belly and lamb rack. No complaints from any of these dishes. The were made with good quality ingredients, well cooked and tasty. What a shame we won't be here tomorrow to re-visit Poppiess.
S.
Lucas the duty manager was an absolute star. Sang happy birthday to my best friend was just an all round superb host. The pan fried grouper was perfection on a plate.
L.
Dropped by for brunch randomly after Heli Hike at Tasman Glacier and refuel. Welcomed by warm fire place and cosy atmosphere. Delicious quality lunch and good service.
J.
Faultless meals .....great staff ..really a gem . Lamb racks were spot on , salmon was great ...wine was delicious , portions not generous but not miserly either . We loved the place .
Y.
We came to this restaurant using TripAdvisor's recommendation.
The food here is really great. We actually came here again a few days after that because of that.
The one downside to that restaurant is that the wait for the food is really long. In the second time we've waited 30 minutes for our fish.
김.
This place is so nice and lovely place. Just perfect for a nice dinner, delicious coffee and drink. The staffs are very kind and nice, especially Becca(is it right your name? I'm not sure). I recommend this place for lunch, dinner and drink. If I have a chance, I'll visit again
B.
Love the food & price so much ❤️
I.
Always had a good stop here on my way north or south. Today was just a perfect day, warm, still, quiet and cloudless. Sat outside under a brolly with cold juices and crispy fish and chips. It doesn't get better than this for a summer's day.
K.
Only went for a short break while driving and the three of us had iced chocolate, coffees, muffin and scone. Really good food and nice people. Will call in again before we leave the area if we have time
M.
Lovely place for a bit of lunch! Inside was done up very nicely and there is seating outside and tables on the lawn for dining in the sun. Food for quite nice but a little pricey by American standards though the dishes we received were very tasty. We would certainly go back again!
C.
Arrived late mid week on the off chance they could do dinner. Was no trouble for them.
Whilst it's certainly not cheap, the meals were exceptional. Lamb was perfect, as was the pork belly, the steak.
N.
Great food with excellent service
x.
The sticky date was really yum.
S.
Had the Cheese Scone and a Long Black. Coffee was a little bitter, but the Cheese Scone was nice. The restaurant service looked nice and they had a good wine collection.
Y.
Very good food and service. Warm hospitality and accommodating staff. Been there with a big group and all had a great dinner.
L.
Food was delicious and service was great. Me & my husband both got the toasted sandwiches with fries. Mine was gluten free and so yum. Thankyou. Would reccomend & we will be back if we pass thru again.
T.
WOW! Wonderful people, wonderful food and wonderful service.
Poppies was a quick drop-in destination for us and we were very happily surprised at the quality of the cafe.
We ordered a "Poppies Breakfast" and "Kumara and Quinoa vegie patty burger" and both were superb and filled our hungry bellies quickly. Absolutely stop here if you're in the area! Thankyou so much :)
W.
Great food, my table ordered almost every option on the menu and it all looked fantastic, and my meal tasted exceptional.
D.
Best place in Twizel. .. had lunch there one day and went back for dinner the next. Friendly staff, excellent food, nice atmosphere. Have dined everywhere else in Twizel and nothing compares. Just lovely.
K.
The cream of broccoli soup and garlic bread was fabulous, but the curry didn't match up, the side salad was heavy with dressing.. oily. And although my veggie pasta tasted ok it wasn't that special. 1glass of shiraz a cider, and above cost $101.
It's a busy cafe, noisy so not a romantic venue, but warm with the Woodburner.
L.
Nice ambiance, the lamb rack was awesome, really loved the beetroot chutney and the crust! Perfectly cooked! Nice staff and nice menu
J.
A great spot to stop en route in the MacKenzie Basin. Friendly service with good coffee and reasonable prices. Also cyclist friendly for all those doing the A2O also to ocean cycle trail. Bike rack outside etc. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners.
J.
Second visit for coffee. Not overwhelmed by welcome both times as well as the café also being quiet. Excellent coffee & nice surroundings. Lovely log fire burning.
G.
Great food selection and great service.
D.
We had christmas eve dinner here! We just made it in time before they closed & ordered immediately. The staff was very friendly. Amazing food, we have vegetarian pastas.
D.
Fabulous food and service. Lovely wines and great selection of beers. Lamb rack one of the best meals ever. Recommend!!
J.

G.
Good scone, coffee, hot chocolate and service
I.
terrific salmon salad and great service
G.
Mostly OK, gluten free meal was a BLT with bread fresh out of freezer
Great location but some food needs some work
Will try elsewhere next time
J.
Dog friendly! I just love the fact I can sit outside with my dog, so few places let you do this. I will always choose the dog friendly places to eat.
The foods good to.
S.
What a great place! Perfectly located if you are on your way to Wanaka coming Tekapo or Mount Cook park. Staff is uber friendly and if you take a coffee there make sure you take one of their scones... are out of this world! If we pass by at a dinner hour again, I am certainly stopping by!
J.
Gr8 food. Large seating areas inside and out. Very good staff. CLEAN TOILETS. Plenty of parking AND they need it! Don't go by without trying this pleasant sunny place .
P.
Great place to stop over and have a bite to eat. Salmon salad was excellent and well executed and coffee is good. Service was friendly and efficient.
L.
Excellent breakfast, catered to a massive table if us no problem at all.
N.
Best restaurant to eat at in town. My pork belly was spot on & every one else thought their meals were tops also. Good service & selection of wines. Will be back
M.
Fantastic! (I had the fish of the day; Gurnard with a salmon risotto + seasonal veges!).
Nice ambience and a fireplace for those chilly Twizel nights!).
J.
A pleasant break from the scary tourist traffic on highway #80 and nicer than the hideous strip development of Tekapo. Can recommend evening dining in the warmth of a log fire.
J.
Yummy food. Buzzing atmosphere. Friendly staff. Just took a little long to get meals.
J.
Lovely food, friendly service, and good choice of non alcoholic drinks as well as great wine list.
D.
Stopped on the way to Lake Pukaki from Cromwell. The cafe is neat, features a good outdoor area too. Restroom was clean as well.
A.
Nice food, swift service
A.
Very good brunch stop
J.
I had breakfast and the pancakes with fried bananas were SOMETHING! It was so much better than I had expected and I would love to visit the place again th next time I am in town.
B.
Steak was better then what I had in Queenstown at a 1/3 of the price. Amazing menu for gluten free also. Well done guys.
K.
Delicious food, friendly staff, overall a lovely spot to stop for a quick bite to eat.
C.
We enjoyed take away cappuccinos. The service was friendly and our drinks made promptly. A nice place to stop for a pit stop and coffe on your way through twizel.
C.
Awesome food excellent service. Only negative is the hot air hand dryer blows out cold air in the ladies toilets.
L.
Great service, child friendly and fabulous food, recommend
S.

Cosy and friendly place for a quick meal. Fresh and quickly served food, lovely staff. Highly recommended.
J.
Stopped for a quick coffee break. Barista was very nice and coffee tasted great! Cool history about the place and looks like they serve nice food.
K.
Quick, delicious, not cheap, but a great find in a small town.,. Make sure you book for dinner in the peak xmas/new year period or you'll miss out! So do yourself a flavour 😂😂😂😂
M.
Great service. The food (pasta) was a bit over cooked but tasted really nice. Great dessert...
G.
Awesome food and service
A.
Super Friendly, helpful and an excellent range of foods...with spirits for that lunch dram. Including a 21 year old Dunedin Distilled whisky
M.
We enjoyed a nice breakfast at Poppies. The service was really good and the breakfast just what we needed as we made our way down towards Wanaka.
L.
We always stop here when traveling through Twizel. As has always been the case the experience was excellent, great staff and really well prepared and presented food.
M.
Nice place, popular for lunch and dinner. Good if you're traveling through, but not a must worth stopping if you don't need to. Limited wifi.
J.
Cena fue delisiosa, great restaurant. 100% recommended. Do not forget call for reservation.
