Reviews of Rona's Cafe
G.
Best coffee place in Akaroa, hands down, Rebecca is a legend! both girls always smiling and lovely to deal with, hope you find a new chef and some FoH someday brunch was always beyond delicious.
A.
We needed a coffee fix in the morning and they had it. Starting with the availability of coconut milk down to a snickers slice which was amazingly delicious. Very friendly and helpful owner who accommodated all of our requests. Probably would be my favourite cafe if not for the fact that I don't live there. Highly recommended for locals or travels
T.
I had Chai latte and a breakfast meal in here. It was in average value but I felt satisfiedly with the serving of staffs. They are friendly and good energy at work.
J.
Such a good place to stop for breakfast if you're Akaroa, and well worth the drive over the hill if you're in Christchurch for the weekend.
The food is tasty and fresh, the coffee worth traveling for, and the walk around Akaroa afterwards well worth the time.
S.
Great tasting food.... But $10 salad wouldnt be enough to feed a baby??
J.
Best Coffee Shop in Akaroa. I didn't get to explore all of it, but this was the spot that stood out. great decor and cosy-modern feel. Great spot for warm and hearty dishes on a cold winter or summer's day. Wish i could of taken more pictures, I just didnt wan to be weird.
J.
Lovely cafe, and open earlier than any other in town. Coffee and food both great. Would recommend stopping in for breakfast if you are in akaroa
O.
This was hands down the best meal I have had in my entire life. I am not worthy of this food. I cannot pick a favourite dish, but gun to my head it was the lamb ribs. Amazing atmosphere and lovely staff. Thanks so much Rona's, we will be back <3
G.
Laudable. Coffee well extracted but milk just a bit off, and a bit of miscommunication on ordering and timing. Other than that the place looks lovely, the muffins were absolutely unreal, and the kids fluffies were cute. Definitely will be back
A.
Such a cute little place with great coffee and vegan sweet treats. The Mars slice and bounty slice were absolutely to die for. We specifically came to Rona’s because of a vegan dish seen on trip advisor but they no longer serve it. Two vegan options were available an açai bowl and avocado spinach ciabatta. The avocado ciabatta was nice but the spinach was a bit salty. Service was really awesome and everyone was friendly and helpful when it came to making vegan options.

Rona’s is so delicious. Each dish is unexpected in the most delightful way. Corn risotto is supreme and it was the best chicken liver parfait I’ve ever had. Would make the trip from Christchurch just to eat here. Well done!
D.
unfortunately we can't show a picture of the cold dishes we had. they were so delicious that we forgot to picturize them. one of it was the fish crudo and it was outstanding. my wife normally does not eat raw fish and only did me a favour to order this dish together for sharing. after she tasted it I had problems to get my portion of the meal ;-)
it was a unique experience to dine in this restaurant.
if you stay in Akaroa and have some sense of culinary taste then you have to go there. you wan't regret.
B.
Setup for takeaways at the moment due to COVID but it’s still the best coffee in Akaroa, hands down! Lovely cabinet food too
M.
We had breakfast and if was delicious. Great place in the morning before the tourist arrive...
T.
Yum Yum. Good coffee, yummy dumplings. Great Kids plate and lovely lasagne.
F.
The setting was very nice. magazines and artwork pleasing. The coffee was lukewarm, and they got 1 out of 4 order coffees ordered incorrect. They sorted it out quickly.

Well what can I say? Staff ✔️food ✔️ setting ✔️. A great place to enjoy food and the sun in Akaroa. We're an unruly brunch, toddlers, beer tasters, food lovers and loud laughers... We decided to turn up for an early dinner to taste the new menu of the season. The food was delicious.. market fish, gnocchi, sweetbreads, lamb, paté.. all fantastic. The waitress was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. She also made a great cocktail. The chefs were loads of fun and I enjoy how you can watch them. My son fell in love with their kitchen and the delicious smells coming from it. We sat outside in the garden.. and honestly it's one of the most beautiful restaurant gardens that I have been in. Loved the experience.
E.
Outstanding breakfasts and other dishes. I had the poke bowl and iced chocolate which were both stunning. Great enjoyed on the pretty terrace overlooking the waterfront. The resident dog was an added bonus - he swaps ear scritches for cute company <3
K.
Lovely cosy Cafe with great service and food! We stopped in for some breakfast before heading back to Christchurch and, as they were closing up for two weeks, the menu items were limited so we ordered some simple eggs on toast with a couple of sides. The food, although simple was made with skill and care and was delicious. The service was attentive and kind and the coffee was delicious. A reason to come for a drive to Akaroa in itself! Definitely worth the time to stop in here.

New Zealand friends recommended this place for lunch on our day-trip to Akaroa, and it was a great recommendation. It was a late summer day, and we sat outside in a lovely garden. We ordered the salmon appetizer (beautifully presented), the grilled whole flounder (tender and delicious), the linguine (pretty good), and grilled cabbage (least impressive: not bad but not great). Those food items, plus a glass of sauvignon blanc, added up to NZ$98, which was more than reasonable.
A week or so later, the friend who recommended it came herself for dinner, and found many menu items unavailable. So, lunch may be the better bet!

This place is true magic. Everything you wouldn’t expect in a small place like Akaroa, you’ll find it here. It is more than worth the trip from Christchurch or anywhere. INDULGENCE is probably the term that describes the experience here best. The food is just incredible and seems to wipe away the boundaries between NZ, the Big Apple or Berlin. The restaurant’s concept invites you to enjoy several smaller dishes on the menue to be able to grasp the variety of food served here. Take it and go through the dishes as if they were a gift to your palate and pair them with the incredible wine selection that the staff is willing to prepare as a degustation for you.
A.
The food was so good I didn’t want to finish. Beautiful garden area, nice crockery and pretty decent service. The risotto and mussels were amazing.
J.
If you want great coffee and to be greeted with a friendly smile.. Rona's is the place to go.. you won't be disappointed
B.
Breakfast was phenomenal. I highly recommend the waffle with bacon. It's the best I have had in NZ.....so far. Staff is very friendly and provides great service.
d.
Had breakfast Every day when I stayed in akaroa, service and food was amazing,a must to visit, good coffee also, this dish is the blueberry, ricotta, honey and hazelnut on toasted brioche
L.
Lovely place for brunch:
Eggs Benedict, dumplings, long black, and a macchiato.
S.
Best meal we’ve had in NZ yet! The brown butter ricotta gnocchi are going to be in my dreams. Cool decor and ambiance too!
C.
Had a sensational breakfast and coffee at Ronas. Great service - although busy everything was handled efficiently and professionally. Clearly popular with locals and visitors alike. Mushrooms were great as was coffee (had to take one away too when we were leaving). Kids platter was really good too. Clearly put thought into it.
D.
Hidden gem, cosy place with soul.Excellent coffee delish food, caring service.Well done
J.
An Akaroa icon. Loved the location, the great early morning coffee and Rona's signature breakfast buns
N.
April 2021, the avocado, egg, halloumi breakfast at $21 was really very excellent, well above the usual NZ cafe fare. Coffee fine. No bathroom inside. Recommend.
M.
This place is exceptional. The food is delicious, the service lovely and the location great too. I didn't take any photos of the food, because I was too busy eating it. I'm very happy to see some truly excellent food being served in Akaroa, a place where average has happened. Go, eat, enjoy!
D.
Best food in new zealand. Overstatement? Maybe. But not really. This was the risotto, almost ate the plate as well...
G.
Firstly, the food is INCREDIBLE. The staff are genuine, and the atmosphere is like a home or a flat (complete with no-nonsense kmart furnishings and tableware:)). Definitely take a hint from the sheer number of locals dining here. One of the best meals out I've ever had.
B.
This place is freaking awesome, the food is a wonderful mix between Ottoleghi something Berlin and something New York.. I honestly cannot put it in words. This place is magical and you MUST eat here when in town, otherwise you missed an excellent experience. The dishes are full of love, passion and care; the business is full of experience, knowledge and bravery and you will eat like you never ate before, trust me!
J.
Wonderful experience in this remote gourmet restaurant. Eclectic changing menu coupled with spectacular location results in a fine dining experience like no other. The drive to Ronas alone is extraordinary, but to find such a beautiful bay and awesome food is a huge treasure. Great service and nice wine list are a bonus as well.
P.
Coffee is very good, recommended if you visit Akaroa. 😊👍
A.
Best coffee I've had outside of big cities in NZ. Great ambience and the wifi works well. It depends what your priorities are. If you want fake chitchat to make you feel better about life, try elsewhere. If you want great food and professional barista coffee then this is the place for you.
S.
Although the food was tasty and balanced, it was not worth the over an hour wait we had for food (for two of us). Came here for lunch and they were painfully unequipped to handle the lunch rush. Furthermore, they didnt use table numbers so the customer has to continually keep an eye out for their meal and flag down the wait staff which, when waiting over an hour was tiring and frustrating. So yes, the food WAS good but not worth the wait.
P.
Out of 14 restaurants/bistros this is (unfortunately) the only place in Akaroa where REAL cooking is happening! Seasonal, local, always great! It's not something what you would be able to simply reproduce in your kitchen, this level of cooking requires that something extra what every good chef should have...Been there 7 times and every single time I was leaving happy, with tastebuds completely satisfied while never feeling like I have eaten too much. If you love food, book a table and see for yourself, you wont regret it!
E.
This shared plates experience was all about the food. The balance of flavours, textures, and fresh ingredients. The iceberg was divine. The wedge was dressed and finished with picked coriander leaves & julienne of radish. The cauliflower, coated, deep fried had lovely flavour but the preserved kemon just completed the oily acidic balance.
K.
Very friendly staff, only had a coffee but menu for lunch looked very good.
X.
We were still welcome at 9:45pm for some amazing food and great service. It was surprising to find modern food this good in a remote town like Akaroa. Try the lamb chops!
A.
Awesome meals - loved the flounder :) thanks a lot!
C.
Delicious Salmon Poke bowl all super fresh and tasty! Partner had a yummy pretzel bun. High Chair for baby! Down by the harbour Perfect!
J.
Amazing, just amazing. The food, service, atmosphere and wine list were fantastic, and we were told the beer choices were going to improve soon.
My wife and I had a great experience at Tomas and would highly recommend it. We were also pleasantly surprised with how low the bill ended up being after such great dining.
B.
Nice coffee, staff need help when busy. Didn't have any time to wash cups and was serving everyone in takeaway cups
N.
Fabulous place in a fabulous town. That concentrates on only the freshest and seasonally available ingredients. Whilst having a menu traditionally based around vegetarian food. A deliciously wonderful change in a meatopia nation.
S.
Just amazing! My boyfriend and I shared 4 dishes and all of them were just totally great, this place is a true « coup de cœur ». We would have totally came back tomorrow but it’s unfortunately closed on Tuesday :)

M.
Great service and brunch was awesome. Highly recommend and well worth a visit when in Akoroa
R.
Really good food but look out for the service from that red haired lady. If they had a competition for NZs surliest waitress she would surely win it.
M.
Culinary Perfection. I have very particular taste buds, and have traveled the world eating the best and the worst and this is one of my top favorites by far. You won't be disappointed.
L.
