Reviews of The Camp - Lake Hawea Holiday Park
J.
We stayed in the large bell tent and loved it. Beautiful views by the lake. The tent was very comfy, especially the bed. Good vibes in this camp ground. Family friendly has all the facilities you need and helpful staff. Definitely coming back next year 👌
L.
Poor signage, poor powered site markings. Noisy first night, party going on until 1:30am. Dirty, dated bathrooms. This camp definitely needs some work. The price was excellent and the location unbeatable. Would think twice about returning.
S.
Fabulous place and so many options for accommodation.
Great flat sites for our motorhome and Jade was so very welcoming. Put us under the trees with it being pretty windy when we arrived so good shelter.
Food truck did great food and we're will definitely return.
Thanks to the team for a great weekend.
T.
Stayed in the bell tipi tents. Was amazing! Comfy bed and they've really thought of everything. Was lucky and got the place to ourselves. They set up the fire with firewood. Tea and coffee available. The lady that checked us in was very helpful as well. Will definitely be back and recommend to others!
J.
Really good to stay mid January, after the Christmas/New Year popular time when the camping ground ground is usually at full capacity. Stayed in a cabin, really tidy, roomy and amenities always clean and tidy. No wait to use showers. A stroll down to the lake for a swim is everything!
C.
Excellent camp, the way family camping used to be, decent sized camp sites also. The fishing was fantastic and the camp team were very helpful and friendly. Will definitely be coming back here.
S.
I don't even know where to start.
Just go!
Tom the Manager is lovely.
The glamping tents are beautifully furnished and more than adequate for a special weekend getaway for 2.
With option for a teepee add on.
Private mess tent and close by portaloo for the night time mimi.
Shower block close by.
Nice secluded wee area. The Denver tents are a must try.
The food truck is where it's at!
Good coffee (i have high standards)
Its brilliant! If camping and restaurant had a love child you'd find a Great mix between camping/glamping/Cafe food.
Try the crumbed chicken it's beautiful. And the mushroom pizza. Food truck staff are very friendly
The views speak for themselves and the land is very obviously cared for and maintained. The capsites are situated between beautiful undisturbed native trees and the team at reception handled the agoda mess flawlessly. The lake is RIGHT THERE! they cater to all kinds of camping styles from powered or non, villa, house, lodging, cabin, tents, caravan tiny houses u name it. If ever you need to be sure of where you are putting your money in these unsure times, i 100%recommend here. We are already planning our trip with the kids
T.
Sarah and the team are wonderful hosts and the location is stunning. Can't beat waking up to birdsong beside a beautiful lake, plus the food cart is epic!
A.
We had a blast camping, fishing and they have an onsite food truck for some flat whites and other treats
R.
Some of the amenities are a bit dated but definitely workable and the location is one of the best in the country. Still great value!
G.
Fantastic facilities for functions, camping and a luxury getaway. Enjoyed Sunday brunch bagels 🥯 well worth the visit.
S.
Lovely campground right at the lake's edge with friendly helpful staff and good facilities.
R.
We stayed in the cottage for two nights. Nice campsite with characteristics and attitudes. Very comfortable and would like to come back again.
S.
Beautiful place. Great atmosphere. Amazing accommodations. Friendly.
k.
Went for birthday dinner, well priced, great food, brilliant staff
N.
The camp is located on the side of lake Hawea and is accompanied by an amazing view of The lake. The staff are amazing and were really accomodating and friendly. They let you borrow fishing rods and there are bikes to hire. The food caravan does decent food at a good price. Also within walking distance to the small township. A couple of negatives, there aren’t many utensils in the kitchen so bring your own, the toilets are sparse and could benefit from some vigorous cleaning, but they have provided some portaloos, which can be handy but a bit smelly. Overall, a great experience and would recommend staying there.
L.
Spent 3 nights here on a premium powered site in our campervan. The Camp is the most picturesque place we have stayed at in the South Island and the vibe was laid back and chilled.
There was some confusion with the pitches and it seemed a bit of a free for all rather than having a set area as everyone wanted the best lake side view but we worked it out between ourselves and everyone seemed happy with there position.
The toilet and kitchen blocks are old but are clean. Lots of rubbish bins and recycling areas.
On-site food truck which we didn’t use but it seemed popular with the other campers.
Laundry $4 and $2 for dryer.
S.
Beautiful place. Great atmosphere. Amazing accommodations. Friendly.
C.
It's looking great .might come stay when bit warmer .lovely the food last year .its a slice of heaven
A.
Friendly staff, fantastic location. The lake view is amazing. Shower is nice and warm. Kitchen has a couples of sofas ideal for that rainy day.
N.
Lovely little campsite with great facilities. The Glamping tents were incredible and even came with a heater and electric blankets for cold nights. The only downside of our experience was loud neighbours and yelling kids late at night and early in the morning (7am on a Sunday)
Apart from that, great experience and once again amazing views of the Lake.
M.
Beautiful views, get to pick your spot so we chose a nice spot next to lake. Great swimming spots and well maintained roads/tracks. Food truck available, reasonably priced and excellent coffee. Reception had a snack shop with icecream ect. Staff were AMAZING. Wifi and signal patchy. Kitchen was older but clean, Essential to bring your own cutlery ect especially pans. Sandflies ect everywhere so bug spray a must. 40mins roughly to bluepools a good day trip. Overall if you want real camping, this is a excellent option to base yourself at 😆
S.
One of the best campsites in New Zealand.
Stayed at The Camp, Lake Hawea for three nights in October 2020. The Camp is beautifully maintained, park setting on the shore of Lake Hawea. The views are incredible, amenities are traditional but very clean. Highly recommend staying here. Great base for exploring Central Otago and only 15-minute drive to Wanaka. Lovely staff with great knowledge of local area and tips for must sees.
a.
Cottage was great but cabin room was quit smelly, the door wasn't shut properly one of our kids didn't want to sleep in at all. Over all not too bad. I must say the stuff on the office is so nice and helpful.
A.
A beautiful place located on Lake Hawea not too far from the town. Staff is lovely and park is very spacious. Place seems overpriced for spots near the lake, however you don't get great views and get blocked if you don't get the last two spots. Facilities are a bit old but everything was in working order.
M.
We had been travelling the South Island in a campervan for 2 weeks and decided to stay here on our last night. It's an interesting camp site with a mixture of cabins, tent sites, campervan sites, some unique geometric dome tent type accommodation, and even a tiny house spread out across a large area. As we were in a campervan this reviewed is based on the facilities for campervans.
The location is great, right beside the lake. We paid for a 'premium' site, the most expensive on our entire trip ($54). But the experience was far from premium.
Firstly there was a lot of jostling with other campervans for a site with a view of the lake. The layout was confusing for everyone. Even though they have 20 odd 'permium' sites only 3 or 4 get unobstructed views of the lake. You quickly loose your view when another campervan parks on a site in front of you. It made for awkward interactions with other campers.
Secondly the facilities (kitchens, bathrooms, toilets) are very outdated and a little scody as noted by many other reviews. Certainly not premium facilities.
Thridly the WiFi is a swizz. Free 100mb for 30 non-stop minutes. Then you have to pay which is not cheap. Almost every other paid camp site we stayed at had constant free WiFi, all be it slow at some locations. For $54 you would expect better than this.
The staff were relatively friendly.
From a campervan perspective this place has average facilities, but the location is hard to beat which is why other reviews are rated so high.
L.
Lakeside peace and tranquility. Amazing accommodation choices for EVERYONE! Picturesque, peaceful nature, with boat ramp minutes away. Get away from the rush of life, chill out or enjoy lake activities. ONSITE FOOD CARAVAN a real BONUS!!
B.
Fantastic spot and great hosts, loved all the personal touches around the places including blankets and flowers in the common marquee with heaters to keep you warm or the bag of marshmallows by the fire. Beautiful scenery, great little find on our trip
N.
We spent nine days at the camp and had a lovely time. The camp was clean and tidy with lovely lake views.
The staff were very friendly and helpful.
There are plenty of activities in th the area e.g. walking, hiking, biking, water and snow skiing to name a few.
Highly recommended.
C.
A friend and I camped at "The Camp" at Lake Hawea en route to the west coast and would have stayed longer if we could have. The grounds are lovely with lots of different areas for camping (they also have a number of huts/cabins). There are lots of mature trees providing shade, amenities are functional and clean and there are ample showers to cater for everyone. The store has some basic snacks and there is an on-site food truck that does burgers and tacos of an evening and coffee and bagels in the morning - both highly recommended (and not extortionist prices either)! Easy and lovely walk into town. The Camp also has bikes and kayaks and other water sport equipment that can be hired, and a number of safe beach spots to go for a glacial swim (definitely worth it - do it)! Highly recommend this camp ground for at least a couple of nights to make the most of the walking and biking trails and the serenity.
R.
We had a group of ten and stayed at the Denver glamping area. The tents were awesome, king sized beds, all linen provided. Mess tent had a fridge and all cutlery and plates provided couldn't ask for more. Our group thoroughly enjoyed themselves, we sat in front of the large fire not far from the tents and had a blast. The only thing I would say is that they had a portaloo near the tents which would have been good if it didnt make you dry retch when using it. We ended up walking to the toilet block which isn't far. Overall we had a great time and would definitely go again.
T.
Very pleasant place. The guy working in the office look like he likes his job : ) the facilities very clean as well as the cabin we had just by the lake. Lovely view and comfortable bed. Not noisy and no insects! Plus the provided kettle, some tea, coffee and hot chocolate made the stay even more pleasant. Don’t miss the local shop in town with delicious local products.
k.
Went for birthday dinner, well priced, great food, brilliant staff
B.
Lovely place with crystal clear waters . Close proximity to Lake Wanaka which is a major tourist attraction and therefore a lot more touristy .Lake Hawea definitely has less crowds and more privacy when it comes to enjoying nature . This is one of the best Holiday Park Camping site I have seen. Highly recommended to those who are seeking peace and tranquility.
P.
Beautiful spot located lakeside. It was very relaxed, great facility’s, a little food truck and located near the main drag. It was a epic little camp ground under the trees. A good playground if you have kids- boat ramp just around the corner. Amazing views of the lake.
E.
Really nice campground with good facilities. It wasn't that busy but the kitchen's would be a bit small if it's getting busy. Amazing views of the Lake. Nice that we could rent some blankets because it was getting pretty cold (did have to pay for that). Nice that we got a recommendation for a second hand shop so we did not have to keep renting it or pay the big bucks when buying them in a store.
T.
Very beautiful location and holiday park!
Good atmosphere there too.
Amenities are clean (but I wish there's hair dryer and better design bathroom in convenience to use). And there's half an hour free WiFi only.
Best selling point is unlimited and really stable hot water supply for shower which is very important for road trip during winter!
E.
My favourite campsite during our stay in New Zealand. Relaxing and beautiful grounds which feel very uncrowded as well as excellent amenities (Bbq you can use, showers without time limits, sweet shop and a food truck). We ended up changing our plans to stay here for 2 nights.
Good base for exploring trails like Istmus (hard going but better than Roys peak) and Breast trail.
D.
Love this campground. Views take your breath away, sure, but the people running it make the place even more special. Friday, Saturday, and Sundays the food caravan runs, with the best pulled pork tacos around. Thank goodness places like this still exist.
C.
The view was spectacular, which is why I am giving it a 3. We stayed at a non powered camp and got to choose where we set up our van. The reason I am not giving it a 5 is because it is the worst facilities I've seen here in NZ. They are worse than freedom campsites that actually have bathrooms. It seems like no one checks them and I had to clean up someones feminine products.
V.
Absolutely beautiful. I would come just for the lake view itself, however the park facilities are also lovely and clean, and there is a food truck onsite serving yummy breakfast and dinner.
Some sandflies, but not as bothersome as you would find with other freedom camping/DOC sites on the west coast this time of year.
This is definitely the place to stay if you’re passing through Wanaka. We wanted to extend our stay for another night because it was just so lovely, however we had to stick to our travel itinerary! We hope to come back soon. Thanks so much for having us.
J.
Started off not too well, but easily overlooked. Nobody was in the office for about 20 minutes. Had to just wait. Took time out of our day.
But minor inconvenience is all that was. Everything was pretty great. Large tenting area, clean facilities, free showers, good kitchens with some very basic cooking supplies (I'd still bring your own).
Playground for the kids, and a fireplace that can be lit by the lake if you ask.
I'd recommend.
M.
A nice large campground with the facilities you need. A reasonably well appointed kitchen, maybe a little narrow if busy and good unlimited hot showers. Tent sites are $20 per person/night. They have a laundry that take $2 coins ($4/wash).
The main down side is that you only get 30 consecutive minutes of internet per device in each 24hr period. If you stay for multiple days remember and take into account what time you use it. Great views and plenty of space.
D.
We stayed in the lakeside cabin and really enjoyed it. It is much smaller than a typical "cabin". It really is just a small metal box right on the lake shore. It has a queen sized bed, table, kettle (with coffee and tea), fridge, space heater, and a few glasses. The bed was really nice! The kitchen space is shared and there isn't much provided cooking equipment, so bring your camping cookware. There is free wifi for 30 minutes. Overall, I wouldn't want to stay here longer than one or two nights, but if you've spent a few nights in a tent, the lakeside cabin is a great option for sleeping in a nice, comfortable bed.
J.
Stayed here almost 2 years ago now... but I'm writing this review because I will never forget this place. The staff was amazing... super friendly. We pulled at night and our 2 year old had a fever. They were really helpful with advise on where to go to help her. They also were unbelievably patient as they helped my son after he snapped his fishing line multiple times. Also, we had an issue with our GPS in our camper and they solved that problem too. Not to mention that the lake is AMAZING! Hope to head back there in the near future.
O.
Went there twice, with campervan, 20 dollars per adult. It is so fun to relax in the lake. Laundry is 4 dollars for wash and 2 dollar for dry. There is a food truck with great coffee and more staff.
J.
This was the view from the little cabin we stayed in on our honeymoon, fantastic location and watching the sun go down then walking up to this view was something i won't forgot anytime soon. The rest of the facilities onsite were clean and the owner was friendly :)
A.
We stayed in the Little Lake House and thought it was perfect. The camp ground is in an ideal location and we couldn’t have asked for a better getaway!
C.
Beautiful camp site, super clean, and fantastic staff. Stayed here the first night and loved it so much that on our way back from Queenstown drove past other campsites just to stay here again. Seriously, best campsite thus far (were minivaning around NZ). Two thumbs-up.
N.
Beautiful lake & setting amongst the trees. Camp facilities are rather tired. Very nice coffee cart located onsite.
C.
We love the tent site. It’s the best if you tent near the lake. However, it’s a bit windy and sunny if you don’t have any shelters. Toilets and kitchens are clean. The utensils are not enough but they provide dish washing liquid which is a plus. And be prepared people may wake up very early for their trip.
B.
Outstanding bacon and egg bagels from the food truck for breakfast
j.
Nice place to camp. But kitchen is not good. No lounge. Internet is terrible. 200mb of data only and have to use in 30 minutes per day. Also my phone could not connect, tablet could. Unfortunately mobile access is limited. Camping spots with view of lake is limited and expensive. Will think twice about coming again. Shower was hot and free.
H.
Our host, Mike, is very very friendly and helpful. Showed us around the park even though we checked in late at night and helped me to hook up my campervan to mains. He also provided us with all the info we need on our next day journey. The place is spacious and well equipped. There's even a heated mix bathroom which is a BIG plus during freezing cold winter. We enjoyed our shower as the bathroom is nice and warm and hot water pressure is great. Loved the kitchen too as it is spacious and well equipped. There’s also PC and WiFi for paid Internet. Not to mention TV, sofa, magazines, free dump station, etc. Highly recommended and we definitely will stay here again.
C.
We stayed there in a tentsite. Beautiful setting right next to the lake, friendly and helpful staff, lots of space for tents. Decent kitchen, showers are a bit dated and not always very clean but ok. Laundry is a bit expensive. But it's a nice place to stay, the views are stunning and you can rent bikes or borrow a fishing rod!
R.
LOVE LAKE HAWEA!!! The Camp is amazing.
Fantastic Family Services, great wee playground and in between Wanaka and Cromwell, take a day trip to Queenstown for the day but relax in the quiet Camp that night!!!!
N.
Beautiful shady grassy location beside the lake. This place is breathtaking. The cottage we rented for the night was basic but comfortable. Price was what you expect in a high demand location. The lady who served us in the office was courteous, helpful and delightful.
A.
this is a well maintained campsite and only a few kms out of Wanaka, where there is a wonderful pizza place called Francesca's, great for lunch and dinner . The campsite it self is massive, will fill to the brim in summer, lovely and quiet in winter. We loved the well maintained old 1950's playground, could not help ourselves from going down the slippery dip! LOTS of walk here and lake views... incredible
J.
I found the facilities here to be outdated compared to other campervan sites. The views are nice and the sites are great. Heaps of play equipment and activities. The staff are very welcoming and helpful.
A.
Simple facilities, but clean and functional.
A lot of New Zealand people on the campsite.
Nicely positioned near the lake.
We enjoyed being here and would come again.
M.
Pretty epic lakeside location. Plenty of tent / camper sites sheltered in the trees, and some incredible lakeside spots if you can chance the wind and sun. Pretty dated facilities for the price you pay, but again can’t beat the location on the lake. Kitchen and showers were clean which is all you need!
K.
A very sheltered campground on the edge of Lake Hawea. We camped a little back from the water which was safer for our little ones. The store had basic supplies & we were pleased to be able to use a communal kitchen with an oven, fridge & freezer.
D.
Awesome place beautiful lake heaps of awesome trees and bird's. Cool playground heaps of area for kids to play and have fun on the lake. Staff very helpful and friendly. Awesome rubbish management well done keep it up.
B.
Stunning views over the lake, sheltered location was there with a camper van and used a powered pitch. the only downside was the pitches were a tad close together but having gone in the off season was a good stay.
J.
I absolutely adore this place. Amazing, unforgattable , stunning and beautiful location - friendly staff - just magic.
They are super creative and pushing boundaries with accommodation options. I hope I will be able to visit again soon.
D.
Nice swimming and fishing spots, great in the summer for families if you can book in early that is!
M.
Great views, facilities and staff.
T.
Awesome spot! Lovely, and more than helpful staff. Staying here in my bus was a definite highlight of my trip..thanks team!
J.
My favourite campsite in NZ.
The lake view was amazing, so beautiful ♥️
Good facilities, a lot of space for camping :)
P.
Just an absolutely lovely place to stay with amazing, friendly staff that are only too happy to help. If you are visiting the south I recommend staying here instead of Wanaka. The scenery is just stunning and swimming areas are something special.
M.
Right on the Lake Hawea, has beautiful landscape and very nice surrounding. Facilities are very good. Kitchen is small but if there is no much occupancy you are okay.
A.
Reception was on the ball and informative. Room heater was turned on early to compensate for cold day. All
K.
Amazing, great views of the lake, clean & well laid out facilities with lots of tree shelter from the sun, was only meant to be a stop off point on our trip & ended up spending 3 nights there, absolutely will go back!!!
P.
Use the dearer camping site, with the best view of the lake. . Great place.
K.
Can’t rate this place enough. The lake is absolutely stunning! The owner of this place is extremely good hearted, always willing to lend a helping hand which makes this place even more likeable.
j.
Lovely place . Friendly staff . Good for camper van. So peaceful for swim 👍
J.
To me this is the most beautiful place in NZ. Simply magical. I hope I'll be able to return soon to try their food from the food truck.
S.

M.

I'd give this place 7 Stars if there was such a provision! For a kiwi campground, you'd think you were in the wilderness of Canada or someplace else! The views across the glistening lake to the majestic mountain ranges are to DIE for!!! Safari and Denver tents dotted around the lake edge and outdoor BBQ's for convenience, drift off to sleep listening to the whir of the wind through the pine trees, with the odd hoot of an owl or kkkk of an oppossum ... defo bucketlist travel stuff if you're visiting SI New Zealand!!! Thanks Sarah & Team!
W.
(Translated) We have a Premium Power Site and just a Power Site. If you do a Premium, we will place you near the lake. It's very quiet and very few people. It was my first time to travel to South Island Campervan, and I remember it a lot ... I came here with Wanaka Hall Park filled with lakes right in front of me. The facilities are a bit old and the kitchen is small but it's okay because there are not many people.

(Translated) Nice place right on the water. But some of the pitches have a gradient of more than 30% (buckle up to sleep!). Unfortunately the wifi does not work and the sanitary facilities are too few for the masses of campers. A pity

Schade

Great camp, near the lake, one minute went to the lake.
Animal skin rug in the room to do a little taste of the animal.
