Reviews of Mister D
V.
The complimentary bread was good, and nice environment. We Ordered the fish of the day and pork belly, the fish of the day featured a weird combination of flavors (grapes and pickled radish) it just felt mismatched. The pork belly was not as good as expected.
J.
Excellent food, service and atmosphere for dinner, had the roast eggplant dish - best vegetarian meal I've had in years. Dessert was just as impressive. 👍
T.
Staff were great as too the service. I’m glad I ate before I came as the main meal size was really tiny. I had the pork belly which was quite ok taste-wise, but was a starter size not a main. My wife had the vegetarian option which was more generous portion-wise. Not a fan of the tip question prior to paying either. Don’t think I’ll be back

Food was amazing. Waitress was nice and attentive. The hostess (assume the owner) was cold and felt like she just wanted us to pay and leave, not sure if we upset her somehow.
The cheese balls were delicious but very expensive for what you get.
Overall very good but a little expensive.
A.
Very nice ambience. Visited Dec2020.
I had the grilled octopus which am was amazing 19$. This was my first time having octopus. Tasted very nice and not very chewy which is sometimes the case with seafood of over cooked.. certainly recommended.
For mains I had their special which was bone marrow ravioli 29$. I found this quite difficult. Even though I love bone marrow and have it regularly but this was quite heavy and oily. I couldn’t finish it . Would suggest to steer clear. Unless u r an Adventurer.. misfired for me :)
For dessert I had their peach and vanilla ice cream. This was very nice 18$.
Plus a drink so overall 82$... wil come again for something else..
======
Visited again in mar 2021.
This time had special drink 18$. Ora king salmon which was basically just fresh raw salmon. (24$) and roasted fish (35$) this was monk and was chewy. For that price I’d have expected a more delicate fish like snapper or Tarakihi.
On a whole expensive but definitely worth trying.
________
Mar 2021
Visited for breakkie
Had eggs (22$) 2 eggs with toast, mushroom n tomato. and fruits 16$ Expensive .. try other places for breakkie
————
Nov 2021
Another visit. This time for a steak as have tried every other place. Had miso soaked salmon sashimi (26$) with steak (41$) potato side (12$) and caramel mouse (18$) with 2 (18/12$) drinks. Total bill 127$. Taste wise good but I’d definitely say it’s an expensive place and there r better steak places out there.
E.
Had a beautiful meal here. Everything we ate was better than the next. Great quality produce, and good alcohol options. Staff were pleasant and chatty.. having a laugh with us. We didn’t have a reservation but we were let in on a last minute request, so very grateful as the meal has been a highlight of our time in NZ. One word, potato gratin!
M.
Got in Mister D at 2:00 PM. When we sat, we were told that we can’t order anything except dessert. Despite disclosing to the public that they can serve until 3PM.
Three star due to the waitress immediately poured water once we sat; could work on customer service skills though.
Suggest to change or add information of lunch/brunch and kitchen closure times, respectively.
Taste:price ration not worth it for their desserts.

This place has been on my list for a while and since we were visiting Hawkes Bay, it was finally time to visit. I’d heard about the duck risotto so was keen to try. The duck was well cooked and the risotto had a nice mix of lemon, pine nuts and currants. Husband chose the bone marrow ravioli which was rich and comforting on a chilly night. Starters - salmon for him, kingfish sashimi for me - were both substantial.
Wait staff were efficient and popped by frequently.
There were some nice touches: complimentary bread, small wine list on the table for when you want another glass and feel like something different.
P.
Hands down the best kitchen in Napier. The staff are impeccable, the service far and beyond above typical NZ fare, and every item on the menu crafted to perfection. This place is in a totally different league to the rest of the eateries in town and wouldn't feel out of place in Akl/Wellington, or even larger cities internationally. Don't bother eating anywhere else in Napier!
A.
First time visiting and ordered a big breakfast and the smoked fish cake benny. Both items were decently portioned. The fish cake was my favourite, the fish was not too smokey and a squeeze of orange juice really complimented the flavour. The big breakfast was good but would of liked it if it has some greens to compliment the dish.
Would come back again.
A.
Dropped into Mister D for breakfast and were delighted with the experience. The service is next level and the seating is well laid out with many choices. The meals are unique and we enjoyed our selection immensely while sitting under an olive tree in a private courtyard. If this is what is offered for breakfast I can't wait until we have a chance to go for dinner.
A.
Having gone for both lunch and breakfast. I can say both menu options are amazing. The restaurant is perfectly curated with amazing food and theme of the restaurant.
With both indoor and outdoor eating it makes for a great summer lunch or a winter dinner.
The cocktail menu has been carefully created to offer amazing cocktails. With a large selection of wine and craft beer available as well.
If you are looking for a great coffee then this is a great place to stop and get it. Their hot chocolates are yummy for those who don’t drink coffee, they also come with in-house made marshmallow.
If you are needing a place to go then I would highly recommend stopping hear.
m.
Good quality food using. Good watch by floor staff taking plates away quickly. Felt a little too fast and business like without friendliness. May be okay and good job. Seats are too close to the next table to be heard everything.
J.
This place was recommended by some friends while recently visiting napier. The food and service was amazing. We choose a place near the door and it was cold. The kitchen staff heard this and they closed the door. The coffee was good as well.
R.
Wonderful food. A risotto can be a risk, but the duck risotto was magnificent. The fish was also outstanding, almonds vine leaves, just divine. The deserts superb. Is there anything Mister D doesn't do well? Don't miss it!
L.
Outstanding eatery. Delicious flat white coffee. Good service, friendly staff.
If in Napier, I reckon this is the place to have breakfast/brunch.
++ You must try their donuts - to die for (didn’t last long enough to take a picture)
D.
One of Hawkes Bay’s best eatery’s. a classic. Good for wine and a lovely dinner. The setting is magic and the staff are lovely. Highly recommend the duck risotto, but it’s hard to go wrong with the menu.
i.
Absolutely amazing food, friendly staff. Even though it's not a family restaurant, they catered for our 3 and 6 year old perfectly.
S.
Amazing host and outstanding service and care by wait staff. Food was phenomenal. will return for sure next time I'm in the Hawke's Bay
K.
Dine in Mister D every time in Napier. Wonderful food, duck risotto is a must.
D.
The most attentive and friendly staff , this is THE place to have donuts which are to die for, perfect coffees. Worth the trip from Welllington. Watch how donuts are made, so very fresh.
T.
Full restaurant and still made me and my little one feel very welcome, great service by the host and the ceviche was amazing!! Beautiful!
I.
The atmosphere is spacious, bright and fresh. There is a garden section to the rear of the building that looks small but has good upkeep. I have only visited here multiple times but only for breakfast/lunch - the selection of food is refreshingly minimal with classic items such as the "big breakfast", waffles, poached eggs, and a good continental selection of fruit/cereal/breads etc, all of which are presented well and are wonderfully seasoned. Great selection of tea and while their coffee isn't spectacular, it rarely disappoints.
The place has a reputation for their doughnuts that come with DIY syringes of different flavours (including alocolic options) which is an experience in itself.
The staff are very friendly, although to be fair, they do tend to get flustered when it gets busy. Good place to come for a casual meet up or if you're wanting to start the day off well.
Y.
We heard about this restaurant and thought to try it while we are in Hawke's Bay.
If you just care about good and awesome food, try their pork belly!
Judging from what it looks, I thought it will be dry and chewy, however dont judge the book by its cover! The meat is so tender, the pork belly skin still crispy, their sauce had a bit of sweet+sour+salty+umamii.. so nice! They finish off their pork belly dish with perfectly cook veggie.
The chef is very nice and personal.
The table service and waiting time can be improved.
A.
Managed to get a last minute dinner reservation at the popular Mister D in Napier. Crowned a One Chef Hat by Cuisine Magazine in 2019, we had high expection of the food.
My friend and I ordered two starters and one main to share. The sashimi salad made from fresh kingfish was served with oranges, avocado, cucumber and lettuce. The grilled octopus was perfect, not overcooked and nicely seasoned. My favourite is the market fish served with kumara mash and the most scrumptious miso sauce.
We ended our night with a vodka jelly filled doughnut. Perfect night
H.
This place is so amazing, I ordered steak whilst my family ordered a plethera of food, and I can safely say that this food was divine. My beef was well taken care of, asked for medium rare, got medium rare, tenderloin was delicious.
Staff are so kind and bubbly, they can make you smile and joke around whilst still being as efficient as possible.
M.
The injectable donuts are amazing! They were made fresh so were still warm when they came out, and the custard and quince jelly 'shots' were a perfect combination - would definitely recommend getting two syringes if you like a lot of filling! My partner got custard and 42 Below Manuka Honey Vodka jelly, which was equally as delicious. Coffee and service were great too.
M.
It's not cheap but you get what you pay for. Varied and innovative menu. The gluten free option for the complimentary bread was a fantastic corn muffin. Devine, so soft, made in house and wonderful to have some effort go into the gf bread as opposed to the normal defrosted sliced option.
4.
Always apprehensive going out for breakfast when out of town but amazing breakfast! Smoked fish cakes and service from French waitress were an absolute standout! Would return and recommend to friends ❤️
G.
Great coffee & food. Good stop for a hearty breakfast right in the city centre. Donuts are a must try: made in store and are super fresh. They serve it to you in a unique way that's best left to them - try it to find out, you won't be disappointed!
R.
Great food,wine,service and atmosphere.
The food presentation and taste is first class.Try it.!
N.
The quality of the food here is exceptional and has service to match. I was tempted by the Power “Phishcake” Benny for breakfast and loved it. Extremely tasty and the fish was not overpowering. Coffee was also very good.
K.
Took my wife here for our wedding anniversary, food and service were both 5 star. very happy customers
M.
While visiting Napier we popped into Mister D for our evening meal.
The wait staff where friendly and helpful, the meals where as good as they looked, compliments to the chef and his team.
If only the maitre'd was more welcoming and wasn't afraid to smile.
E.
Found this great little spot to have breakfast. The coffee is fantastic. I was craving some great coffee and Mister D delivered. Tried the Cheesy Eggs and Farm Eggs plate. Both were awesome. The Cheesy Eggs weren't heavy at all, which was very surprising. With the eggs plate, I ordered a side of black pudding. The pudding wasn't too heavy either and seasoned just enough. Overall very satisfied.
M.
Tasty food. The preserved fruit was amazing. Good service and great decor with high ceilings. We had breakfast.
J.
We had a great meal, nice ambience and a great staff. Really enjoyed the pork belly dish.
J.
Very nice food. The Marrow bone ravioli was stunning.
c.
Very very nice place !
Food and service not to be faulted today .
But do not have the Fried Bread !
It is far too addictive !
S.
Slow to warm up to service. Eventually came around to being friendly. Recommend getting more than one syringe to fill doughnut. Pleasant decor.
B.
I'm all about service, and Mister D does not disappoint. Chef Dave knows his produce. not being afraid to slip a tongue in there, let me say I tried the Ox tongue special and it was amazing. the beef was everything it was cracked up to be. Our maitre D knew his wine and our server was as passionate about the food and the menus as Chef D. I'll be back.
L.
Great food, service and atmosphere!! Took the duck risotto and finished w/ a donut (must!!)
Everything was delicious - would certainly come back!
L.
Great food and service! I would have to say that the 1m distancing is not happening in here though.. table next to us was practically shoulder to shoulder.
R.
I love it here ....
I always eat here whenever I’m in town
Great interior
Great atmosphere
Attentive staff
Amazing food
And the cocktails are pretty good too
YOU MUST VISIT IF YOUR IN TOWN
f.
yummy breakfast!donuts is little bit too sweet for me. But with flatewhite coffee, everything is great
G.
Delicious range of meals....not to expensive. Great doughnuts 🍩
y.
We went to restaurants quiet later, I have souffler is great but another dish duck is dry and hard to eat.
L.
Had a lovely brunch at Mister D's which was delish. Great service too.
T.
We came here to celebrate after my dental operation. Donut with dark rum and chocolate. What a wonderful idea. These tastes go perfectly together.
E.
Nice spacious restaurant with indoor outdoor seating. Good coffee, food and portions.
Friendly and efficient staff.
B.
The food was delicious and we enjoyed our time there. The ambiance of the restaurant is just beautiful. Make sure you order some pastries.
R.
Probably the best mocca my wife and I ever had in NZ. amazing barista! doughnuts are also great, fresh and cooked to order. the syringes are super fun, staff very nice and friendly and very tasty food overall!
B.
Good food. Some had warmer service than others. Doughnut was large and doughy, enjoyed it regardless, filling not enough though.
H.
The food was amazing, I love the fish cake on the breakfast menu. But they forgot our coffees, no one has came back to check on us after we got our meals. Little bit disappointed but we enjoyed the food. :)
S.
Always good. Always have slick service and a split of ice cold Bollinger at hand. Never miss it when we're there
P.
Our favourite dining experience in Napier - simply faultless; fabulous food (the venison pie is a must), perfect wine recommendations (who needs a wine list with a maître d that good), great service and a fun atmosphere - highly recommended!
T.
Stopped in to Mister D for a coffee and donut after hearing about their donuts from a friend.
I was impressed with the friendly service, good coffee and the donut served warm was amazing.
The food menu looked great and it was unfortunate that they were closed on Tuesday when I returned to have brunch.
Regardless, worthy of 5 stars and the donuts are a must!
A.
Mister D Love your place, Awesome food awesome deserts and nice people. My personal favorite place in Napier
I.
Excellent food.
K.
Very busy place. Great service and lovely food.
J.
Highly recommended for brunch. Service and quality of food was exceptional. We enjoyed the cooked brunch (rock n roll cooked breakfast, and avocado with feta), and the baked goods and coffee. Doughnuts looked very good too. No street seating, but spacious inside with a small outdoor courtyard.
E.
Best breakfast I’ve ever had. I am from Canada and in Canada they simply don’t make breakfasts like this wow just ourstanding Woww
R.
Really good breakfast. Each item on the plate was delicious - especially the roasted tomatoes. Go for a donut after your meal - you won’t regret it
S.
Awesome coffee, really cool staff and prob the best doughnuts in NZ.. went back twice in one day
I.
The doughnot with custard “syringe” is really amazing lol. Nice and friendly staff. The best breakfast had in Napier!!!! Really loved it and had a great time here with my friend. 🤗
G.
Had an amazing dining experience here beautiful food.
M.
Hmm,Hmm, sooo Good, I mean the food, but so is the staff!!
S.
Pleasant surroundings with nice staff giving excellent service and great coffee. Thank you
C.
Great food, healthy and simple menu, delicious chai lattes, and fantastic service. All staff were attentive and polite
K.
Wonderful people, fascinating menu and beautifully prepared with great attention to detail. Lovely coffee. A fitting end to a lovely weekend in Napier. Thank you.
A.
We went for an evening meal and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The steak was treated with such care, my fish with miso sauce was sublime....and then there was dessert. The chocolate coffee stack that came out was impressive looking, and tastes just as good. However, my vegan lemon plate....wow! Each component was lovely, and then I ate the together!!! Simply stunning....we'll be back the next time we're in Napier 😄
S.
We had a fabulous food and coffee experience, but unfortunately the bistro was freezing cold. Looking around, I noted that most customers still had their jackets on! (Thursday 13 May 8.15am - 9.30 am.)
J.
Truly an amazing place. Have been visiting for years and the staff and atmosphere remain excellent. The food, needless to say, is also delectable.
Highly recommend.
P.
We had a fantastic brunch/lunch I could not fault, well done Mr D.
M.
Great food and fantastic service. For someone like me with very specific dietary requirements they were faultless. Great work team.
N.
The atmosphere is great. Lovely staff and great service. The coffee is great and they have great food options. Highly recommend this place.
N.
I liked this cafe for adult food. Had corn fritters which were very tasty . We had children with us and no kids menu available so they ended up having a cinnamon donut , which they loved but I would rather have been able to offer them a brunch menu item. There were other families there with us so clearly this is something they need to address . Staff were welcoming and accommodating to children too . Coffee was outstanding 5/5.
B.
Great breakfast spot and don't forget to try some donuts!
C.
Had the avocado on toast which was a tasty breakfast but the portion size was tiny for $19. Two small pieces of toast and no more than half an avo across both. In saying this, the dukkah was real good and fit out is cool.
J.
We took our posh UK based daughter for an evening meal. The food, service, presentation was superb.
Miss Posh has been raving about it to anything who will listen.
Really reccomend it.
N.
Excellent customer service and food was Awesome!!
W.
We went there for breakfast. I had the cheesy eggs. Was a little surprised to be given a knife, fork and a spoon.. . It soon became aparent why. The dish involved two eggs with what was essentially a bechemel sauce. It was fantastic. I also had the bacon which was a suggestion and well worth it. Wilson.
S.
Great food, unfortunately let down by being very rushed. Was only half way through my starter when my main arrived abruptly. If you're not in a hurry (or want to actually finish your starter) might pay to ask wait staff to hold your main! Bit of a shame as they're doing themselves a huge disservice by rushing people through unnecessarily. Still worth a visit, as food is exceptional.
Y.
Mixed feelings. The food was awesome, unless you had the vegan or vegetarian options. My friends described their meals as 'economy class'. The wait staff were all super nice, but the service sometimes seemed a little haphazard. The sweet treats were just the yummiest. Doughnuts, ho hum!!!
Happy with the cost of everything, although wine by the bottle seemed a bit expensive.
All in all though, a lovely evening.
M.
Food was great. Service was very ordinary.
S.
Great atmosphere, the food had quite different pairings compared to other restaurants and friendly staff.
P.
The food and service is good. Also, their doughnut always my fav.!!!. ^^
T.
One of our better dinners in New Zealand! We ordered a lot and enjoyed everything. The clams were so fresh and tasty. I don't remember the appetizer or my husband's dinner, but I do remember ordering and inhaling the amazing donut dessert. WOW. The chocolate injector into the warm cinnamon sugar donut was fun and delicious.
P.
Excellent place for breakfast, professional friendly staff. Must try the doughnuts.
I.
Awesome food & wine. But felt rushed as they were clearly keen on turning the table over to get more covers in for the night.
S.
Outstanding staff and lovely food. But just a warning if dining with kids, there is no children's menu. I am not after chicken nuggets etc for my kids. But it can be an expensive gamble trying to figure out what on this gorgeous menu they will eat. I would suggest they offer a couple of kids platters to spread the risk.
B.
Enjoyed the cozy environment, nice food and friendly service. Good for friends catch up and entertaining. On an overnight stay in Dunedin we were told this was a popular new Asian Fusion restaurant. It's in a very handy location right on the Otagon. It was very busy even on a Monday night and has quite a funky decor.
B.
We went for celebrating my birthday, the food was really good and the portions right, good balance between the flavours. I gave just 4 stars for one reason, We ordered a coffee and a Donut, the coffee came a little bit cold and burn and the Donut never came, I had to ask the guys if they noticed that we didn't received the Donut. Despite this incident they charge me a table service. I'm sorry I didn't expect to be charged for the delay of the service.
V.
We loved our lunch here. It's a really nice place with friendly staff. I would recommend this place either for a casual lunch or an occasion. Their menu is not very big but you will definitely make a good choice with whatever you pick. The sauce what comes with the catch of the day fish is incredible. :-)
D.
We dropped in for coffee on a Saturday morning. Very busy but we were shown to a lounge area to the front of the restaurant which was comfortable. We were a party of 4. Service was prompt and coffees good. Free wifi was a bonus. Definitely recommend for coffee.
E.
This restaurant is a real gem. The wait staff were attentive and very friendly. The food was excellent and the homemade cola was a refreshing surprise! Atmosphere is modern but with hints of art deco, and is classy but comfortable. Couldn't have been happier with our experience here.
S.
We stopped in quickly for a takeaway doughnut after reading reviews. I just got one with chocolate syringe. And OMG, I wish I bought more. The cinnamon doughnut itself was super super delicious, the syringe whilst yum as well 💉 isnt necessary as it was so good on its own. Totally regret not buying more at the time!
C.
Great atmosphere. The Maitre D was fabulous, and the service was great. Food was delicious! Must try the D doughnuts!
J.
Brilliant coffee, great selection of food, and even better service
K.
Nice place, beautiful food, nice coffee
C.
Awesome service, great presentation and great food
H.
Best breakfast I've had anywhere for quite some time. Service was prompt and efficient, outdoor courtyard was a lovely atmosphere for dining in, but the food. DAMN. It was good. Neither I or my partner could fault it, or the celebratory mango and pomegranate
daiquiri' s delivered as soon as their Liquor licence allowed. Absolutely recommend this place.
B.
Excellent service. Adaptive staff to my specialist dietary needs. Highly recommend.
P.
Food was fantastic. Duck risotto was creamy and salty (not overly so) and the currants, which sound so wrong, brought a delightful sweetness. Pork belly was similarly flavoursome.
Donuts are like no other. Soft almost creamy interior. Injected fillings are a bit of a gimmick, but fun nevertheless.
Friendly and attentive service. Can't believe they're not open weekday evenings.
P.
We had a great time. We arrived around 18:30 without a reservation and they were able to sit us around 19:30. We sat in the little lounge area next to the bar had appetizers and wine (they have a good selection of wine by the glass). Our meal was fantastic and the service to the same measure. The chef and staff really paid attention to details to create an excellent dining experience.
C.
Amazing food, epic service and a lovely atmosphere. They were so friendly with our baby and we felt right at home. The food was absolutely delicious. Ifnwe lived in Napier we'd be here all the time. Thanks for a great meal!
C.
Sunday last , bkfast.. Food .. It's good . Coffee a bit bitter .. water too hot probably, unless gear needs clean or grounds too fine. Service good. But remember.. plenty competition for that Brunch dollar ! Give it a go. Cob
s.
Went with my wife and son for breakfast. We had two portions of cheesy eggs and a rock and roll breakfast. The food was excellent as was the service and general atmosphere. Will definitely be back.
D.
Great atmosphere, great food and the service is top notch. We had the fish cake Benny and Mister D cheesy poached eggs, if you love cheese then the poached eggs are for you!
E.
Great food and great atmosphere - our party of 10 were greeted warmly. Exceptional food and service. Can’t wait to go back!
G.
Great menu; beautiful food, excellent service and lovely courtyard. So nice to see all of the local produce used and a bottle of certified local NZ Extra Virgin Olive Oil served with complementary home baked bread roll. Reasonably priced.
L.
Great fast service, and enjoyed a party on a plate for lunch
Z.
The injection doughnuts were average for the price. I probably had really high expectations for it and was slightly disappointed. Service was good and friendly.
L.
wowowow the brunch was quite nice but the highlight was definitely the service and the boozy donuts. I'll be returning just for that
B.
Pancakes... Yum. The fruit served w pancakes was delicious.. had something added which made it so much better than any other stewed fruit I've eaten. Clean, welcoming. Sort of place as visitors you end up at each visit because it is a calm relaxing place w food you can rely on to be delicious.
D.
Quality fit out and service however on our visit this place just didn't live up to the hype. Coffee was average and the caramel slice I had was quite bland. Mister D is renown for their donuts which come with a 'syringe' shot of flavour of your choice to inject, novel and delicious.
w.
Had lunch during the Deco week end. The place was humming so thought there would be quite a wait - not so. Such helpful and considerate staff on the extremely hot day. I couldn't have my first choice when eating at a café (eggs - boring I know, but I LOVE eggs) but chose the Beetroot Risotto - absolutely INSPIRED, so delicious, rice cooked to perfection and a wonderful blend/balance of flavors. Keep it up.
C.
Had a really good meal, well cooked and balanced flavours worth the price and the donuts with flavoured syringes were the coolest thing I'd seen in awhile. Staff friendly didn't wait to long for meal. Nice to get away from auckland.
G.
Thoroughly recommended. Very clean good menu and speedy service and the most cheerful staff I've run across in a long time. They have even discovered that Jesus drank Riesling.. Give it a go. I guarantee you wont be disappointed. Gordon Birch from the UK
R.
Overall standard of food was very good - particularly the cheese balls and the squid. Our table staff were very attentive and helpful however our initial reception at the front desk was somewhat cool and disinterested.
D.
Food was delicious. Dessert was okay. Great wine list.
E.
Have come here quite a few times for coffee and once for dinner. Let me say, don't let the quite quirky menu for dinners put you off! A very good choice no matter what you order, and the service is always very good. Nice to have friendly banter and a sense of humour between the staff as well. Thumbs up!
L.
Just literally arrived from Akl. George and Hinewehi say lets meet at Mr D.
Wow. As soon as I walked in I saw the tower of doughnuts. It was a nice warm cosy place to catch up with friends haven't seen in a while. I had the succulent roast duck on gorgeous creamy risotto. My partner had the lamb crochet delicious chutney to accompany. George also had the roast duck and Hinewehi had the octopus on kumara looked incredible.
Of course to finish we had the famous doughnuts. Piping hot a syringe with your favourite flavour. The vaccinator was coconut and lime. The custard also delisioso. G&H had the chocolate equally mouth watering.
Thank you for a wonderful experience.
M.
Beautiful meal. Fabulous personal service. All courses timed well and a great selection of both wine and food
K.
Attentive friendly staff..fantastic anchovies. The staff allowed us to sit and chat without feeling rushed. Lovely experience. Will certainly be back soon.
R.
One of the best restaurants I have ever been to. The food was top notch and the service was impeccable. Our waiter Aydan was extremely friendly, nice, and helpful, giving us recommendations and cracking the occasional joke. I put this restaurant on my top list of recommendations for anyone visiting Napier.
M.
Came to Napier on holiday and this was the highlight of our dining experiences. Service was great! The menu is very interesting and full of flavours. And the wine list was just as expected, awesome!! Would recommend this place to locals and visitors.
S.
Really good coffee. The doughnuts with the syringe filling is a novelty, the children did enjoy them. As a morning coffee destination I would recommend. Staff were very friendly and pleasant to deal with.

The donuts here are amazing! However, the experience was really let down by the service. Waited 20 minutes to be served after sitting down, then after waiting a further 20 minutes for the donuts, we had to go follow up with a staff member about their whereabouts. Staff were apologetic, but waiting more than 40 minutes for two donuts is far too long. Order your donuts to go instead of sitting down!
S.
Soooooo, I don't want to be too harsh. The food on the whole was good, the service was very good, and the environment was quite nice. I do, however, have a few complaints.
First off, the water situation. Sparkling water is a lovely touch but not for $10 a bottle. If you want to sell brand name sparkling that's great but put it on the menu and don't ask if people want sparkling or still without making it clear. Doesn't matter how high-brow you are, no one is above a soda stream.
My other gripe was very specifically to do with the (possibly still on the menu) salmon salad. The salmon was quality and the quantity was excellent, but the dressing was too acidic. I get that could be a one off issue but may be something to look into. The other issue was the oranges. Call me petty but I would have liked so see the citrus supremed. Bougie? Yes. Unreasonable? No. It's one of those small steps that can turn a good dish into a great dish. As painful as it can be to extract those glorious rind-less segments, the presentation and textural pay offs really justify the move.
E.
Yes the staff are quite friendly, but the menu the lady recommends, it sucks. A typical kiwi breakfast content but the tastes are split apart, not balance. Heavily over rated and over priced.
M.
A great place for brunch.
C.
Fantastic food and friendly staff. Very cool watching the baker making the bread. Each time I come to Napier this is my first brunch stop.
A.
This place is absolutely amazing! Words can not describe how wonderful and amazing the service and food was. Every staff member that my partner and I encountered during the night was really helpful and quiet well informed as to what was on the menu and also what some of the dishes entailed. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a nice night out with good food and great service. Once again THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! And really good value for money too!
c.
Dinner at Mr D's last night was excellent. Not just the food which I'm not going into detail about but also the first class service.
S.
Oysters and fish of the day was so nice :) staffs were really polite.
M.
Great service, our waiter was very attentive and interacted with the kids as well. The food was really good and large. It was a little noisy but that is just the style of place.
S.
Went there for breakfast. I had the cheesy eggs which were great and come out baked in a dish. Very tasty and bread was superb. Pretty on par with what other cafés charge for breakfast. Would come back again.
M.
I loved that place! I went with my mom. She had the waffles and I had the smoothie bowl. It was delicious. We got a sugar/cinnamon donut afterwards which comes with a jam in a seringue. What a creative dessert!
H.
Very pleasant setting nice patio separate from main restaurant with comfortable furniture table chairs n cushions.
Choice of food ok well presented.
Service good.
J.
Food was lovely. Service of the table wait staff fantastic. BUT there were a couple of issues. One of our party was in a wheelchair and access through the front door was not possible so we went down the alley to the side and found a lovely outdoor setting to use. We left our wheelchair bound party member at the table while we organised food. Our error was not realizing Mister D is no longer a cafe but is now a full restaurant. We explained our situation and where we were seated, and they insisted we 'wait to be seated'. This seemed a bit silly as we already had our table but as they insisted, I sent the rest of our party back to the table and took my place in the queue. Unfortunately we were made to feel like we were such an inconvenience by the 'front staff' as well as by the person who eventually took me to our table.
Our second issue: we had a voucher that had two days to redeme. Payment was made when it was realised the voucher hadn't been used. We approached the staff and were told they couldnt take it as we have already paid and that we would have to come back to use it. Again, silly. They could easily have issued a manual refund if the bank transaction was too hard.
We felt their attitude to be very insincere and definitely not a good public relations step. While their table wait staff were lovely and food delicious, I'm not sure I would recommend the venue as a friendly and easy place to visit.
C.
Definitely put on your list to visit, great food, funky contemporary setting and great choice of wines.
L.
Nice vibe and atmosphere and friendly staff. However, I had heard really good things about the donuts from Mister D, but unfortunately they were disappointing. They were a bit stodgy in the middle, and the chocolate sauce lacked flavour. I wouldn't recommend them over other donuts that I've had.
K.
2nd time I've been to Mister D while visiting Napier.
Coffee is bliss, with perfect temperature 😊 Friendliest, efficient staff. A very clean and cosy establishment serving great food with a smile. I wont go anywhere else now, highly recommend!
D.
Beautiful food and fabulous service.
C.
First time here for dinner with my wife. Will definitely dine here again next time we come over from the Waikato. Perfect steak fillet with wine jus and polenta chips (I don't normally like polenta, but these were just right).Dessert was Tonka bean cream, milk chocolate whisky mousse, poached rhubarb, mint 16 - Wow!! Followed by a latte, again perfect. But seriously this was the best meal I've ever had throughout all courses. Easily tops my favorite Cambridge restaurant. Great service and a lovely evening - Thank you.
L.
Delicious food. Service is above and beyond - they went out of their way to create iced tea for us, even though it isn't on the menu. Will definitely be going here again
y.
The food was ok. Service good but a bit forced. Nobody looked like they really were interested. Over priced and the doughnut fillings were bland compared to last visit. Lost its shine.
K.
Excellent service & meals. Menu selection & cocktails very good. Totally enjoyed our evening out with friends. Meals faultless. Top notch exoerience
B.
Great place for a classy lunch. The staff were very accommodating even going as far as to make a drink that was not on the menu for me to try and altering it until it matched the drink I was looking for 😁 will definitely be going back again!
J.
The best place in Napier for friendly, professional service, excellent meals, innovative dishes, in-house breads sweet dishes &, tea/coffee time treats, consistantly good food & beverages! Clean, attractively decorated toilet facilities. Fresh flowers throughout. Everything you expect from experienced high standard hospitality operators.
T.
Amazing staff on Thursday evening. Very engaging, warm, knowledgeable and unique in their approach which is refreshing. I’ve only been a couple of tiles before but this place is certainly something special.
J.
I had the duck risotto, it was delicious. Lovely spot with a great courtyard and very nice service, away from the cruise line crowds but still central.
J.
Donuts were yummy, nice and light
L.
Went for breakfast - found it underwhelming and completely overpriced. The doughnuts were fabulous though so would suggest sticking to coffee and a doughnut!
b.
My partner and I stopped in on a very wet Monday lunchtime. The food was incredible and service exceptionally quick considering it was so busy, would absolutely recommend.
H.
Been a few times, love the pork salad dish but wish the menu was updated more. Doughnuts are always a delicious treat and an awesome patio out the back for relaxing in the sun.
T.
Excellent, modern cuisine in a very nice setting, and with highly attentive staff. We had a very friendly, delicious, and overall very enjoyable lunch.
M.
My freind had food allergies and the staff were very helpful. They even made the gluten free bread for her. Keep up the good work.
D.
Incredible food, friendly and genuinely the nicest restauranteurs you will ever meet, great decor & atmosphere. Will keep pouring wine until the kitchens clean - have had many a good meal here and will keep going back!
J.
Love going here. I have a bit of crazy diet and they always cater for it. Great food, wine and atmosphere. The service is excellent too.
M.
Beautiful breakfast, great coffee, awesome staff and fabulous atmosphere. And the kids loved it too.
W.
A very classy affair, this place is. The service was quick, the food was quality, and the fellow patrons were well attired. If you're after a nice experience with nice food at a reasonable price then I'd suggest Mister D. Take your time and enjoy the surroundings, maybe some of it will rub off :)
B.
the donuts and coffee were delicious as always ... loved the rum and chocolate mix ... my 89yr old mother's first time and she loved it
K.
Food was amazing, id suggest maybe share the fried bread 😅. Great selection of drinks and great service
R.
Excellent breakfast here. Staff very friendly and helpful, could see a baker baking everything onsite from bread to scones and doughnuts. Would love to give the full menu a crack.
A.
Pretty average food and coffee
D.
Great atmosphere, Good food. Will go back to try some more of the options on their menu.
J.
Have been here a few times. Service is good and the food is fantastic. Tastes great and always plated well. Good location and look out for the naughty light stand.
F.
Good service and good menu. Wine selection was excellent. We sat outside in the courtyard next to a cosy fire. Great ambience. We'll be back there again.
L.
Tasty coffee and a very classy yet cozy interior
K.
Went for breakfast. Menu with reasonable prices and many good choices.
Very busy on weekends though and both food and drinks took a long time to come out. Ordered cheesy eggs which were absolutely delicious.
G.
Great service. Excellent breakfast. Lively atmosphere.
L.
Super friendly service. Amazing food. Love this place! Highly recommend the corned beef hash, and save room for donuts!
A.
Fair bistro food at high prices. Heavy on fats and oils, with limited options for vegetarians. I would go there again for the extraordinary donuts and a coffee, but wouldn't dine there again.
K.
Fantastic service great food can't wait to come back to the bay
D.
Great service. Good value. Delicious food (cheese eggs was very tasty). Donut syringes a nice touch
M.
The food was great and everything was yummy. If you go there you should try the donuts they are the best.
H.
The Service is fantastic, the staff friendly, the food truly amazing. I have dined all over NZ. These guys are up there. Well worth it!
N.
Great environment, the corned beef hash was a delight and the confit mushrooms a nice texture and flavour addition. Supreme coffee which is always good
H.
Nice coffee, and the donuts are good. I have yet to try the rest of the menu, but from looking at other people's plates, I would say it's excellent as well.
S.
Great food...great service.... clean and tidy. Nice to go for something different 👍
M.
Very spacious, friendly and welcoming staff. Very delicious and fresh food, the sashimi salad was wonderful. Go there if you happen to be in Napier!
B.
It is a very pleasant place, with excellent food options. The servers were all very nice, but they did forget about the second coffee order.
M.
We assumed given that the donuts are the draw card, that it would be good for kids for lunch. It was not. Aimed at the high brow adults instead.
A.
Nice place to have breakfast. They make and bake everything themselves. I had a custard doughnut and brioche, they both were so good.
J.
Donuts Good but flavourings to go with them I found a little bland for my taste buds. service was good till took 7mins to make a hot water & slice of lemon.
K.
We had a great birthday lunch. Excellent food and service along with the relaxed atmosphere were all conducive to a very memorable experience.
K.
Such a great place to visit. Loads of different food options available - a drink and something light or a full meal. Lovely staff and fantastic atmosphere.
D.
Total amazing coffee food and service. Can't wait till next time.

K.
Another 5 star Napier cafe, leaves Auckland in its dust, for quality of food and service.
A.
Great service and the best donuts! You can inject them with chocolate, custard or jelly. So delicious.
M.
Wow - we loved Pru and David when they ran Vinnie's in Auckland, we loved them when David cooked at Terroir and Pru was at Black Barn. Sophisticated food, excellent service and a superb bar next door too.
