Reviews of The Wharf Cafe
E.
Absolutely brilliant. The fish and chips were fresh and the batter excellent. Some of the best I've ever had actually. Excellent staff too. Good beer selection and a fantastic spot to sit outside and relax. Definitely recommend!!
D.
Great place, friendly service, huge coffees, great views, nice fish n chips from next year. Just as a good cafe/bar should be.
R.
Nice fish and chips. Good selection of hot and cold drinks. A very good stop to coromandel from Auckland
R.
A very cute place...the ice cream vendor outside was great! Real fruit ice cream after a day of fishing was perfect!
N.
Lovely fresh fish (wasn't a huge fan of the batter though). Amazing crispy chips.
Said they were turning off the fryer at 6.40pm despite closing time being 7pm. So if you want to be served go atleast 30 minutes prior to the listed closing time.
M.
One of the top places to visit in Thames. Enjoyed a well brewed flat white, my kids had icecream and wife got her ice tea. Lovely location with an awesome view from the harbor. Fish and chips seems to be the main stream, heaps of orders from next door fish market. Certainly a mandatory stop when in Thames again.
F.
Loved the fish n chips served in paper.
Great coffee, Staff could have advised earlier that their paging system has a limited range.
B.
Beautiful fresh fish & chips generous servings. Rustic setting if you don't mind seagulls hovering around.
R.
Nice spot, great coffee ☕ small pet friendly. Welcoming staff, good food, right on the water
R.
Yummy crispy batter on the freshest fish, nice chips
Short wait
After ordering a cool 'beeper/vibrate' gadget is given to alert when your order is up
Picnic type tables in an outside dining setting.
Definitely will go there again
d.
10 days ravelling around New Zealand, and this was THE best fish n chips by far. Fish was very fresh and chips crisp and fluffy. great value also.
M.
Wow wow wow. The perfect turn around point from our motorcycle ride. Loved the Seafood platter and wharf setting. Fab staff. A definite revisit 👍🏻😎
M.
Excellent fish n chips served in paper.
Good coffee.
Plenty of parking. Busy place.
M.
This is a great little place just of the beaten path in Thames. Town center was so busy and I just wanted to sit and have a coffee and snack so riding around I saw the sign pointing to the wharf. Lovely cinnamon date scone and friendly quick service.
B.
Great fish and chips, beautiful location. Came back and had the fish burger. Great burger but glutem free bun feel apart on arrival. Proper buns should be available.
J.
The place is very comfortable. It is closely coupled with the adjacent Thames Wholesale Fisheries. One can order fish and chips at the fisheries and take their buzzer device with you into their cafe on the wharf. When it buzzes you pick it up, wrapped in paper in the traditional way. You can buy wine in the cafe to enjoy as you eat the meal with your hands. There's a water cooler and a table with paper serviettes and cutlery if you need it.
The fish and chips are very superior - the best in the area. The Wharf business never compromises quality for the sake of speed. The chips are always crisp; the fish lightly battered and cooked to perfection. I rate Thames Fisheries the equal of the justifiably famous Mangonui Fisheries in the far north.
How good? Permit me a little rave to try to do it justice:
It's hard to find truly gourmet finger food. You certainly don't find it in branches of big fast-food chains.
I've enjoyed a few examples, back when when we still earned money and could travel and dine out. The unforgettable thin-crust pizzas of Rome and rural Tuscany. Once or twice, in the company of Indian friends, I have dined on the finest of Indian cuisines, eaten by hand, folded in plain naan bread. In those restaurant settings, one expects outstanding food, with or without table cutlery.
But there are taste experiences that surpass all expectations. Where you expect ordinary, perhaps hope for very good, and are surprised by the divine. The huge wild blackberry bushes that explode in the Dutch countryside, the tiny, exquisite wild strawberries on the edges of the bicycle paths through the national park of Kennemer Duinen, west of Haarlem, the neatly trimmed blackberry boundary hedges of German farmers that adjoin public pathways. Be there at the right time, ready to forage a continuous feast until you can eat no more. (We learned to have small sealable food storage items in our bike panniers, so Nature's fast food became nature's take-aways.)
I remember my father and I eating spontaneous John Dory sashimi in our fingers, on the rocks in Taipa. I was quite young, eight or nine I think, and I had seen the fish in a clear rock pool, stranded by a receding spring tide. I caught it with my bare hands, and Dad knew just what we should do with it. We had no soy sauce, no wasabi. Come to think of it, back then nobody in Kaitaia had even heard of those condiments
, much less sashimi. But sashimi in effect is what we relished that magic day, and even now I have never tasted sashimi that even comes close.
Close to us in Thames is another place where you can get gourmet finger food that surpasses what you might expect. We lunch occasionally, as we did today, on fish and chips at The Wharf Café. They're listed in Facebook as "Thames Wholesale Fisheries and The Wharf Coffee House & Bar". Their food is affordable even for we superannuitants, and always tastes great.
When they have fresh lemon fish available, ignore the temptation of the snapper. Go for the lemon fish. I kid you not. Their shark n taty is right up the best of what the world can offer. God, I hope Michelin never discovers them. If they did we could no longer afford them.
If you can't get lemon fish on the day, choose the snapper, more expensive but always wonderful. Or take a risk and choose hoki. That's the cheapest fish in the NZ market, but don't worry, the staff make even hoki wonderful. Best to use their cutlery for hoki, as the hoki flesh is less firm in your fingers than the other varieties.
For the wine, take the house chardonnay - really. You'll get a gourmet meal for a fast food price. It really is finger-licking fabulous.
T.
Always beautiful food but sadly I didn't get all my order and I don't live close will have to check from now on snapper isn't cheap and to not get it and pay for it kinda sucked
J.
Great pizzas, fish, chips and burgers. Awesome views across the firth of Thames. Friendly staff too!
M.
The freshest fish and chips. Very homely place, eat out of paper wrapping. Views over the estuary. To wet and chilly on the day but nice indoors.

J.
Was recommended by a hitchhiker I picked up and it didnt disappoint. Tasty fish and chips with a great view. Affordable and filling. Nice outdoor seating, but birds would be watching your food. Sauce available at 80 cents. Service was reasonably fast. Enjoyed my meal, would recommend.
B.
Good food and friendly service! The loaded wedges and grazing platter were fantastic value.
L.
I often go here for a client who loves their food.
Recently I bought flounder from here, it was lovely.
They will also cook it and add it with chips if you want.
Good service and reasonable prices.
Their fish is usually fresh.
They also smoke fish, and sell a variety of filletted fish and a good selection of frozen bait.
J.

We were in Thames so decided to go there and it was well worth the time. Great food, wine and beer. Seated outside at a table by the sea was very enjoyable. Will definitely be going again when back in Thames. Thanks to the staff who made our visit so enjoyable.

Excellent service, amazing food..... and a great place to sit and enjoy a great coffee from the girls in the cafe
F.
Awesome fish and fries! Both nicely cooked, not greasy at all and portion of good size. Kids burgers are really good too, they even put veggies in there, pretty unusual and way more tasty. Staff is also super friendly. Just beware of the birdies ;).
P.
Great food and a place to meet friends
D.

Best fish and chips in town
M.
Nice little basic place to eat your fish and chips from next door. Lots of locals here. There is a basic bar and coffee shop. The staff is friendly as well.
S.
Seafood and chip platter overlooking the river after the coastal walk = perfect.
N.
These ladies do make the best coffee. The wharf itself is old as, think rustic beauty. The same goes for the outlook. Lots of birdlife catching fish, there are massive beautiful mangrove forests lining the river mouth. Various boats are moored and others on the hard stand. The cafe is on a working wharf along side the best fresh Fish & Chip shop both welcome you to use any seating. It's a great spot. Beats looking at traffic while sipping your coffee.
T.
Best fish & chips ever. Pretty cool spot to have a bite and a beer!
N.

H.

This is a relaxed and friendly place to either order and eat fish n chips from the nearby store or eat in from their snack range. They have a few gluten free options. They also have a drinks menu so you can enjoy a wine or beer looking out at one of the few Thames seaside views
F.
Great fish and chips !
The place is absolutely not fancy but in front of a calm and beautiful view of the sea.
It's definitively cheap (less than 10$ for a fish and chips).
I liked it so much on my way to the Coromandel that I stopped on my way back, and they gave me an extra-fish portion. Thanks ! 😊
R.
Enjoyed a shared lunch of fish & chips and a beer in the sunshine.
We had snapper and gurnard, one tasted better than the other but not sure which was which as they were served together.
Good selection of fresh fish on display.
A.
Delicious fresh tarakihi, juicy mussels and heaps of yummy chips . Bonus - can get a wine with your lunch . Great service and awesome outlook with tables at the water !

Great Fish and chips.
A.
Always great fish and chips so fresh just like the fish has jumped from the line into the fryer. Coffee and cake to follow YUMMY just the way to finish the meal. Inside or outside dining pleasant view of estuary and staff in both the fish shop and cafe are friendly and helpful. I make it a point to get lunch there whenever I have to go to Thames.
P.
Love this place! Sunday afternoons at the Wharf with Emelio and Sean are a great way to finish the weekend. Great food and service, and a lovely spot to catch up with friends 👍
W.
Always stop for fish and chips here when in Thames. You order the food at the fish shop and they bring it to the Coffee House and Bar. Good wines ans goid coffee and frwsh cake.
B.
Just love fish and chips
A.
Yum, yum freshly battered fish, plenty of chips & free lemons. Very nice eating our lunch on the wharf, special place for me.
B.
Great coffee, friendly staff, good selection of beer and wine. The only bad comment would be the tasty but very dry scone and a muffin with not much fruit on the day I was their.
S.
this Is a chippie on steroids! Not only was it the best fish we have tasted in ages but the serving size was very generous and the setting was lovely. You order, sit down on tables at the wharf, get a wine or beer from the bar and the food is delivered to you. They also have platters of nibbles for any not keen on fish
R.
Great fish and chips the fish was delicious and fresh
d.
The most fresh thin battered glorious fish, one potato fritter equals 5 and lovely crisp chips. my favourite fish and chips shop of all times
g.
Always nice food and service
f.
Quaint Cafe with a nice atmosphere looking out to water views..situated by an old wharf /harbor ..Excellent coffee too!
A.
If it's the simplicity of fish n chips that you want, you wont do better, really fresh, right on the wharf. You can eat outside on a wooden table sheltered by the cafe too.
M.
Simple facilities but the best fish n chips. I always go back for the fish. When I come off the water from fishing I always go past here for a feed before heading home. Got to be 5 stars!
F.
Nice views over looking the boats. Inside and outside seating areas. Nice people and friendly service. Couples, groups, parents with kids, back packers and passersby visit there. They serve hot and cold meals. Coffee and tea. Good for a quick stop, casual visits.
R.
A small bar but a goodie. We sat outside and watched the tide come in ( I think it was coming in, not being of a nautical disposition) and drank our bevvies. Maggie was welcome with her own tethering point and bowl of water so a 5 paw rating from her.
P.
Some of the best fish and chips you will find
Z.
Great fish and chips
C.
I first looked in the fish and chip part. I found the fish too expensive to buy, either fresh to take away or order fish and chips in store. Over $30 for a kilo of snapper is a bit much. Over $6 for a piece of snapper deep fried is also a bit much. Others don't seem to care though as there were quite a few people buying fish and chips. The coffee part is nice. Warm and good views of the water outside. The coffee is ok and the food is the usual cafe fare though I found it a bit expensive as well. $13 for a bowl of soup with ciabatta is a bit steep. $5 for a very small ham and cheese toasted sandwich. Ok for a visit, but I'll try another cafe in the area next time I'm in Thames so I can compare.
H.
Lovely fresh tasting fish! Would definitely recommend for others wanting to try fresh fish and chips.
D.
One of the best fish and chips places in New Zealand. Always visit on our way to Coromandel.
P.
Great little discovery. There's an oversupply of cafes in Thames, but this is one of the best. Interesting food too.
V.
Very tasty fresh and smoked fish! Fantastic service and the coffee in a cafe is not bad at all:)
T.

C.
Always stop there when passing. Great food and location near the water.
S.
I stop in at the wharf every week on the way to do my shopping and its the place i always recomend but i wont be anymore.
The blonde girl with the false nails has the worst customer service that i have experienced. She never smiled or greeted me as i walked in, she acted as if i was bothering her,and when i asked her to repeat a question she spoke to me as if i couldnt speak english, this isnt the first time ive experienced her attitude but it will be the last. I would have given you 1 star but the other two girls were amazing as always so ive given 3.
S.
Fresh fish and good value.
M.
The biggest & freshest scallops I have ever seen, perfectly crisp batter, fish yum, chips okay but make them awesome & I guarantee this will double your customers, friendly service.

Y.
Wonderful and great fish and chips from next door
S.
Stopped in at the Wharf Cafe while doing the ride from Paeroa to Thames and back again. Fortunately it was easy to find as it's at the end (or start) of the Hauraki rail trail ride so it's a great point for a coffee and a muffin at the halfway mark (as it was for me) or the end of your trail ride.
Friendly staff and awesome coffee! The banana and walnut muffins make great fuel for the ride home and the place has a great vibe.
Definitely recommended ☺
k.

P.
Omg.. Best fish and chips I've ever had.
r.
Came to Thames Wholesale and Fisheries after seeing all the online reviews. The fish was lovely and fresh as was the scallops and mussels, unfortunately the batter was super oily so much so it bleed through all the layers of the paper and left oil on the table. It could have been an off day but after amazing light fish and chips at Kelly's Waihi I left feeling disappointed.
B.
Staff are friendly and helpful. Consistently serve great coffee. The takeaways always look and taste yummy.
M.
Lovely fish and chips and so prompt with service.

Quite a nice spot to sit and have fish & chips, unfortunately we watched everyone enjoy theirs while our order was misplaced, when we finally got our order I thought it was over priced for a shop selling fresh fish on a wharf.
