Reviews of Chocolate Fish Cafe
J.
I'm a big fan of this place. The standard fancy fish sandwich is lovely, the potato cake is fluffy on the inside and crisp on the out. My partner said his choc shake was delicious and scrambled eggs were soft and tasty. And the coffee was divine.
On a nice day you can sit outside and admire the waterside view.
This place is super kid and dog friendly as well.
M.
Perfect restaurant spot for enjoying a sunny day in Wellington!
Most of the tables are outdoor, they have some hats and sunblock if needed. The place has a very casual and familiar vibe.
We ordered both fish and they both were on point, just delicious. Salads perfectly seasoned too.
A must go in Wellington (on a sunny day..)
B.
Super brilliant chocolate fish cake, so tasty!! Also recommend the ice latte, perfect flavour. It was a bad weather but I feel so happy after I enjoyed their food, next time will try their food on menu!
N.
Fabulous staff. Great wait staff. Delicious meal. Was there when a party of 3 constantly complained to the young waiter who handled it amazingly well. There was nothing to complain about either!!! . Don't know how you do it. Loved that your boss came out and supported you.
K.
It’s a quirky place, all the chairs are painted with differently and inside feels more like someone’s house then a cafe sometimes, but the food is pretty great and the staff are friendly.
D.
Family friendly....areas for little ones whilst giving adults space to relax ..
Food great! Interesting and a little different from the run of the mill cafe...
I visited yesterday....expecting to sit on bean bags with a view across the harbour.....now replaced with old school deckchairs! Delightful location!
D.
Great place to bring your kids. Food's good too.
S.
Great food and great customer service, plus a really lovely environment. Unfortunately had to witness staff spoken down to and argued with by a rude and belligerent customer. Staff handled it like pros and were very professional. Can't recommend this place enough, we often get gift vouchers from here for presents.
G.
Very close to Camp Wellington where we stayed last month. It was recommended we visit and have a taste of what they have on the menu. Didn't disappoint. We had light meals, but it was perfect. Lots of parking space outside. They also have a play area for the kids to enjoy. Amazing view at the front. A cool place to chill after a long drive from Auckland. Definitely will be coming back to try other menu offerings.
H.
Amazing Food, Friendly Staff and cool location. We will come back in Summer 🥰
R.
Amazing customer service. The young orange haired lad was very charismatic and helpful with deciding food to order. Will be going back there again.
K.
Love love loved this place accidentally came across it will driving along the bay heading towards Mirama absolutely delish this cafe, beautiful views, outdoor area was perfect for the sunny day and they had bikes and trikes for busy kids so as a parent you can actually enjoy the coffee instead of rushing off, definitely a must go to place! For everyone
M.
Lovely meal , this time I'll had a steak sandwich, yummy 😋
L.
Great food, view, and brilliant idea to have kids bikes and scooters available as well as a playground and trampoline! A parents paradise!
K.
Always love going here. Today we took my 16 year old daughter for her Birthday lunch, she choose to go. We love the burgers and gluten free friendly too 💖
V.
Busy day, and great service.
Date scone was great with lots of fruit.
Good play area and toys for kids.
P.
The food is great, staff too. Would rate higher except for the cost. 2 snack sized meals, 1 coffee, 2 iced chocolates and a cake... $70. Ouch. Definitely not good value for money. Would be back more often for the food, but similar offerings elsewhere for much less, my visits here will only be very occasional.
A.
Used to go here quite a lot but recently it has been a bit of a let down.
Ended up getting the big breakfast which was nice but definitely seems to have changed recently.
Also ended up getting a chicken salad on another occasion which was actually very mediocre.
Not sure if the owners have changed but either way, it's such a shame the quality has gone down hill as used to love coming here.
S.
Absolutely fantastic out of the way spot. Hands down the nicest seafood chowder I’ve had in a long time. True kiwiana menu. And don’t go past the black Doris plum or Feijoa and ginger smoothies - absolutely fantastic.
L.
Love this place, try not to change it please. Many Vegan & vegetarian options. Fantastic staff, fast service. Pictured is the Vege Burger made vegan. It has mushrooms, eggplant, vegan dressings, vegan pesto sauce from memory. Delicious sweet potato chips. On a previous visit, I had their Chia smoothie bowl, delicious too. Great coffee, vegan slices available, though I was too full to try. Plenty of space, seating inside & out. Loads of cool bikes, trikes for kids to ride. Set off the road, though keep an eye on your kids as it is open and the road near by. Many people walking, cycling and running on the road, great to see.
A.
Dog friendly and delicious. Everything on the menu looked absolutely delicious. Perfect way to spend Wellington on a good day. Plenty of space for kids to hoon around and incredibly accommodating and welcoming to our four legged diner. Even offering him a biscuit.
S.
Amazing food and very friendly staff. We had the veggie and the triple b burgers and the tomato soup of the day. It was all so good. You could taste the ingredients was of good quality. The atmosphere was cosy (we sat under the plastic roof with the terrace heaters while the rain was pouring. We had a blast.
Would definitely go again and recommend to others.
Cheers from Copenhagen Denmark ✌️
D.
If you are visiting, hire a car and visit the Chocolate Fish Cafe and also drive around the scenic route. The prices are a little on the steep side (but typical for inner city cafe) - the food is fresh and delicious, and staff are friendly and attentive. It can get a little windy! If you have going kids they will enjoy the free play area.
B.
The only time when I didn't have to plan anything or to go anywhere was in Wellington. After 5 hours driving all the way down from Taupo, the last thing that I wanted was to think on what to eat. Lucky for me, a dear friend of mine, Sean, was being a good host. Not only he extended his hospitality by inviting me to stay at his place, he also took good care of me all the time while I was in the capital of New Zealand.
So instead of bringing me to nearby place, he drove all the way to Shelly Bay which was located on the Miramar Peninsula. It is a very nice cafe with an equally nice sea view. Bummer that it was drizzling when we reached (also the fact that it was winter so the weather was very cold).
The kids took an instant liking to the cafe right away - spacious & cosy! This cafe is famous for sammies - seriously I only understood what sammies are when the food was served in front of me.. sandwiches!!
Some of the sammies that we had - fresh fish of the day, bacon & egg, streaky bacon, and also Angus beef burger! Needless to say, everything was prepared from scratch and served hot. We had a tummy warming sandwiches for breakfast and left the cafe happily.
Apart from sammies, they also serve bagels and burgers too. Normally the cafe will be packed on weekends and when it is sunny.
V.
its a lovely place and all, but the menu was very confusing to read, and my fish sandwich had a really thin piece of fish in like not even enough to cover the whole sandwich and 2 little leaves of Spanish and the Kumara chips with hallumi plate were way to expensive for what it was. it was only worth $8 in my eyes not $13.50. there was all about 10 chips in there . the food is way to expensive for it is. it's a shame because the staff are amazing and super friendly!!
A.
Great for kids. Nice food but a more extensive menu beyond grilled food would be better.
A.
Yummy food but a bit expensive. Only eat their specialty food. Iced coffee is not nice. Don't order it. Great outdoor area for kids.
S.
Delicious, traditional seafood chowder with plenty of white fish and prawns. Not padded out with potatoes and gritty molluscs as seen in other cafés. Served with crispy white toast and croutons. Good value for $21
M.
Great place to sit and watch the day go by. Great friendly service, good coffee and their bliss balls are
To die for. Pooch friendly, with dog spot and they even have treats for your pooch, our boy loves it there.
Iced coffee to die for!
J.
It's hard to find bad coffee in Welly (coffee capital) and this place is no exception... it was also sunny and not windy (a bonus, which happens about 5 days a year!!)
M.
Beautifully situated seven minutes drive from the airport this is a good place to have a cuppa whilst waiting for your friend's or famiky member's plane to arrive. If they text you before they get off the plane you should arrive in perfect time to collect them from the arrivals pick up area.
Awesome place to relax & chat with others over a coffee (& food!) whilst the kids play on the bikes and pedal cars.
Wonderful views - this faces west and gets the warm afternoon sun - of the harbour and the city. We watched a couple of people successfully fish with rods/poles from their kayak just out from the shore. Good for spotting planes too when they land from the north.
J.
Big outdoor setting filled with rowdy kids. This place is perfect for parents, who refuse to give up on brunch. Chocolate Fish has a large menu, including a specific kids menu, focused mainly on seafood, sandwiches, and roughshod burgers. It is below Wellington standard, but would easily match expectations of the average state highway tearooms....if they were reliant only on a large barbecue.
Be warned there are no sweet breakfast options, in case that's what you're hankering for. There is a wide range of drinks though, so the Tui-drinker is as at home as the craft beer snob.
The views back onto Wellington are the real draw card, and on a sunny day you're spoilt with picnic tables, lounge chairs and a big play area for children.
Mind the seagulls, and avoid if hung over.
G.
Best location in Wellington for an outdoor brunch with sea views and child friendly. Excellent food and coffee at fair pricing. The seafood chowder and paua sandwich are wholesome, tasty and priced well below most eateries in the region
K.
Excellent service, delicious food! AMAZING views. So great for families and large groups!
R.
Good little Cafe away from the city, overlooking the harbour. Kid friendly. Good service. Worth the short drive along the coast scenic tour road.
E.
Delicious whitebait sandwich and coffee. Great to be able to sit outside and enjoy the sea views. Good service too.
E.
Nice nook with good views off Shelly Bay. May have been an old NZ Navy Club as the decor suggests. Adjacent kiddie park. White bait fritters and the pate didn’t disappoint.
J.
Super delicious and friendly staff! Had the chickpea salad with halloumi and the pea and ham soup.
S.
Maybe the best burger I’ve ever eaten. This is one of those hideaway kiwi gems that I hopes lives on forever! Food and drinks were unbelievable!
F.
popular cafe for family meal or friends catch up. food quality & service are just around average. but the cafe has a great harbour view.
K.
Great for kids. Heaps of bikes for all ages whilst you enjoy a drink (or feed). We had coffees and they were all top notch. Decaf was a winner too which is hard to find.
S.
Best seafood chowder I've had in my 10yrs back in NZ! Family loved their food too, great coffee. Friendly and lovely staff
D.
An astute and perceptive young man provided the best customer service that I have encountered in years. Chocolate Fish Cafe food is exquisite
K.
Yummy food in a relaxed setting. Could do with more shaded areas outside. Cheerful friendly staff
H.
Great food great service. The atmosphere is so nice, my kid loves it. Highly reccomend
T.
Great corn fritter/bacon sandwich with a lovely meringue
B.
Lovely eclectic place, plenty of parking, lots of tables (none matching), excellent staff and super kiwi options on the menu. However, prices are nuts in NZ, don't really understand how the average kiwi can afford to pay for this type of meal. $25 for some fritters is mad.
U.
How's good a cray fish sandwich? Almost as good as Austell fritter sandwich. This place is epic
R.
Great food, coffee, views and friendly staff. Fabulous place to take the kids with things for them to ride on and a trampoline.
D.
What an awesome cafe!! The food is outstanding and the place has this awesome quirky vibe. I really like the retro feel and all the different dining areas. The service is very good also!!
A.
Excelent food, nice decoration, great service. I found it on my walk up along the beach shore. Great place for families, amazing view and reasonable prices.
A.
Lovely place to stop off for a coffee and something to eat. Friendly, efficient staff, consistently good food and drinks and a great atmosphere.
There are choices for seating options, inside, outside out the back which is a closed in conservatory, outside on the grass, outside on the deck or outside on the concrete under sun shades.
Dogs and children are welcome here, there is a supply of dog biscuits and water bowls for the 4 legged friends and for the children there is a great menu along with bikes, a trampoline and climbing toys to keep them amused.
Chocolate Fish only have a grill to prepare hot food so have a wide variety of hot Sandwiches and other great stuff but no hot chips.
We love to meet friends here as there are lovely big tables and it is great to bring out of town guests as it is a little bit different.
M.
Great food, great service. The fish Sammie was super delicious - I wish it was a little bigger
K.
I don't know how I've never actually managed to come here after living in Wellington my whole life. Enjoyed a delicious crayfish sandwich on an unseasonably warm winters morning with my fiance and dog. Awesome staff, great vibe and super family friendly.
K.
Lovely place for breakfast, we can sit outdoors zone under morning sunshine.
This place serves with fresh and local ingredient.
S.
The food portions and presentation is poor. The fancy sandwiches are anything but fancy. I would not go to this cafe if it simply food you are after. And the prices are shockingly high for what is delivered. However, it significantly redeems itself (all three of the above stars) for the space it has for the kids and all the toys. I will be back, as I prefer to enjoy full conversations along with mediocre food without interruption from my kids, versus amazing food that I can't focus on because my kids are bored out of their trees. (I will feed the kids before hand so that I don't pauper myself!) I would avoid avoid avoid if you are kid free!
S.
The best coffee and kai moana in Wellington. Awesome views, service.
Worth the drive around the coast.
N.
Love the vibe of this place. Perfect place to spend your afternoon if the weather is good. Tried the seafood chowder, scallop sandwich and coffee. Highly recommend the seafood chowder!
A.
What a fabulous place. I could have sat here all afternoon enjoying the kids playing on the supplied toys, the food, wonderful milkshakes, and tranquil senery. Toilets were keen...Staff were friendly, ample parking, with a free water station outdoors. Dogs are welcome and sat nicely at their owners table. I totally reccomend the trip out here.
J.
What can I say. One of the busiest days iv seen them have. Short staffed and the head chef running the food. And yet. No dissapointments what's so ever, the triple B burger is possibly the finest burger I have ever had. Perfect proportions and just an excellent amount of sauce. The pate is a must and the coffee never disappoints
G.
Good food, very good gelato, excellent location and view!
M.
Fantastic overly generous slice of Carrot Cake and scores 9.5 out of 10! Just yummy with cream too! Top value. The ginger slice is good too, but perhaps just a little more on the plate? We went in for afternoon tea. Yep that's very British especially as we ordered Earl Grey. Now that can be a risky business in the Southern Hemisphere. However, I'm pleased to report not here! A real good tasty tea, well balanced, refreshing and hits the spot. If you're bothered by young children zooming around, its a great family space BTW, then walk on. However, if you find a quiet space then enjoy! Top service, great cakes and top tasting tea.
N.
Feel like sitting out over the road from Shelly Bay? Devouring one of many BBQ meat or fish sandwiches on offer? Sitting watching the kids scooting around on one of the many mini trikes provided. Or perhaps sitting way away from the children! Quirky inside filled with affordable art Miramar has on offer. This is the place.
D.
Always a treat when we are in NZ, Friendly staff with Great views and good food, family friendly with alot of play area for the kids they have trampolines, play house, bikes and trikes, also have alot of seating areas for big groups. If your just getting of the plane or flying out or just checking out Peter Jackson studios (Weta Studios) it's definitely worth checking out even just for coffee's and thier cabinet foods.
B.
I love the food ,the view, atmosphere and the cabinet food!everything was nice.thank you
P.
This is pretty much the perfect cafe for people who like kids and/or BBQ seafood.
C.
Very friendly and efficient staff. It was extremely busy but wait time wasn't too bad. Table of 8 and everyone seemed happy with their meal, however, the seafood chowder was very average.
K.
Great service, great food. Good location.
M.
Beautiful scenery, very nice staff, and great food. Will go back down when I return to Welly!
P.S. I left my drivers license there and they took initiative to track me down and post it back to me! Much appreciated!!
J.
A very eclectic place, very popular due to the good food and coffee, easy free parking and on a sunny day in Wellington you can't go wrong. Always very busy but you are told how long you will wait for food so I'm happy with that. Lovely sunny spot to watch the world go by.
A.
Restaurant with a view. Love the sammie with fresh catched fish. Tried its Reuben and it was pretty good too.
J.
Really interesting place to enjoy a lovely lunch. Always very busy. Staff very pleasant. Interesting menu.
J.
So great! Amazing staff, perfect spot for a big group with a range of kids/no kids, good wine list, plenty of parking. Lots of things to keep the kids occupied, plenty of open space.
I totally recommend it!
J.
Delicious food! Highly recommend the bacon and egg sandwich or the whitebait fritter sandwich! Awesome decor as well!
J.
Just great place for a walk and amazing food. Very nice people around!
A.
Great setting - indoors and outdoors. Awesome play ground for the children. Very quick service - no longer than ten minutes. Food was really awesome. Would go again.
J.
Great cafe for family and adults. Probably no where better to be than sitting on the garden, looking back over the city with an Iced Chocolate and one of their awesome sandwiches.
T.
They really value their customers at the Chocolate Fish! My sister and I went there for our bday lunch, one of the owners came out to our table and surprised us with have a cupcakes and a sparkling candle! We really felt the aroha! Delicious food, great coffee! Mulled wine is superb too
K.
Extremely fast service. Lovely food and wonderful n friendly staff. No wonder its so popular. Great indoor n outdoor seating option. Really well run during the trying times.
O.
Amazing food, location, price and view will definitely visit again
K.
Great space for kids to play, while the adult enjoy the sun. The zen space out the back is fantastic for a quiet peaceful lunch
K.
Loved this quirky wee place by the sea. Art decor.. funky quaint setting inside. Lovely coffee.

J.
Have visited several times with family never disappointed. Efficient service and friendly folk
C.
Prompt and very pleasant service. Whitebait fritter sandwich absolutely delicious.
G.
Delicious burger, gluten free options and great coffee. Friendly and very efficient service.
E.
Simple food made well. I find that this is a fantastic place where you can go to look at the water, let the kids play and have a drink. The menu has lots of sandwiches and also and excellent simple kids menu too, perfect for your little picky eaters. Before going be aware that this place is extremely popular especially on a warm summers day, even so the staff seem to get your food out fast even with a full house. Definitely recommend!
G.
Great food, coffee, service, environment and clean as a whistle bathrooms. Indoor outdoor seating opportunities, beautiful outlook into the Evans Bay basin and out to Wellington Harbour. Go!
C.
Great food and coffee and lovely staff
m.
Delicious kai, value for money, friendly and pleasant staff, agree a little bit on a higher price range, however the produce is fresh and the meals are tasty. The choice is yours. I enjoy treating myself at this lovely cafe once in a while. The view is remarkable.
C.
Been there twice and LOVE it! Staff super friendly and helpful, food great, specially the chocolate fish cake :) venue amazing, love the atmosphere!
The only, tinyest, suggestion I might have is for a wider veriety on the menu, not really a burger and sammie kinda girl.
J.
Great coffee and cheese scones. Always made to feel welcome.
M.
Very good. A fun place with good staff and food.
A.
Amazing place located in Miramar. They have some of the best cakes I've so far tried in Wellington. Be sure to check out the chocolate cake! When the weather's good, you can sit outside, where they have an extensive playground area for kids too.
P.
Great food, had the best Reuben Sandwich I've ever eaten. Was super busy, so a bit of a wait to order, but well worth it. Will be back to try the open steak sandwich soon.
J.
Really great place to go. Food superb great atmosphere area outside for the kids to play bikes etc. Across from the sea. A great family outing for everyone.
C.
Excellent place for kids. Even on a rainy day, nice atmosphere and great kids menu without breaking the bank. Child friendly++
P.
A lovely spot away from the rustle and bustle of the city, fresh air and great views. A good variety on the menu...I had the paua fritter, at $17.00 I would have liked to taste the paua... the fritter was soooo thin, looked like paua, unfortunately did not taste like paua. Apart from that, our iced coffee, chocolate slice, tea, and ice block were a treat.
s.
Excellent food, wide choice, interesting artwork lovely seating both inside and out. Nice view of the sea. Really nice staff. Will definitely go back.
H.
Still reliably great food, great setting, great coffee, year after year. More gluten free options these days, as well as other offerings for this that are dairy free or vegan.
R.
Good service, nice cheesecake, fun bikes for the kids and kids at heart
A.
Really really cool place. The staff are genuinely lovely, the food is hearty and tasty and the decor is really neat. Come have your lunch here.
R.
I always enjoy being in this café. The food is so delicious. On weekends is always busy. But still it worth to wait for the food.
D.

H.
Scallop sandwich anyone? OMG best detour ever before going to the airport
J.
A very eclectic place, very popular due to the good food and coffee, easy free parking and on a sunny day in Wellington you can't go wrong. Always very busy but you are told how long you will wait for food so I'm happy with that. Lovely sunny spot to watch the world go by.
T.
Fantastic range of kai and drinks and great playground for the kiddies too
N.
One of the best cafee in Welly. Should be try the hot chocolate and chocolate cake.. yummy
S.
Couldn't believe how good the service and food was. Set up brilliantly for kids to play in bikes and scooters. V highly rated. 👍
M.
Favourite Cafe for the kids to run around and for us to soak up the sun
N.
Bacon and egg sammie was stunning super nice service 5 stars
M.
Omg the grilled fish salad with snowpeas.. I added halumi.. So Filling and fresh!
J.
Really liked this quirky cafe. In the middle of nowhere, but served great food with a smile. Fast service, and a small ordering error immediately rectified. Food was excellent. Best whitebait fritter sandwich I've had, and wife loved the chicken liver pate. Drinks were great too. Lots of parking, and even though we enjoyed it on howling freezing gale, on a hot summers day it'd be magic. Highly recommended.
V.
Also tried their almond butter toast - and got the fully loaded version that included honey, sliced bananas and cocoa nibs. They warned me this wouldn't be great for takeout. And I'm glad to have the chance to sit in and enjoy this - it was very filling and each bite was perfect. Healthy, naturally sweet and wholesome. They also had some beautiful scones - didn't order any but will be back to try one.
H.
Awesome food. I had delicious hot crayfish sandwich and my friend had bacon and egg sandwich, all cooked on a BBQ. Outstanding atmosphere, there's even an area for kids to ride a variety of bikes that are provided. Outdoor and indoor seating. Bean bags on the grass looking out to the ocean. Very cool place.
M.
Omg the grilled fish salad with snowpeas.. I added halumi.. So Filling and fresh!
M.
A nice place to grab an ice cream after fishing
A.
Amazing how they can manage to serve such great food from a barbecue type environment. Was a great sunny winters day when we visited and was packed. Good play equipment for kids too. Only downside would be no fencing to stop stray grandchildren from heading off to the road.
E.
Great location, great staff and great food.
N.
Fantastic service. Yummy food (try the carrot cake!) and great coffee. Awesome views across Wellington harbour. Very friendly, warm atmosphere. Great place for kids with scooter and bike area and also a trampoline, all within watching distance of outdoor eating area. Plenty of parking and a lovely drive around the bays to get there. Set in the historic RNZAF base in Shelly Bay, Wellington. Would highly recommend a visit.
J.
Nice cafe with a decent choice on the menu. Great for small kids as there are trikes and bikes free to play with and lots of outdoor seating. Waiters were excellent, very on the ball.
l.
Had a brekkie outing for my nieces 2nd birthday..Great kids menu..She loved the food & the outside play area..Friendly fast service! Thank you Chocolate Fish cafe!!
G.
Great cafe, plenty to entertain the kids
R.
This is a remarkable place with a very unprepossessing exterior down by the sea. Very busy. Plenty of stuff for kids to do outside. Lovely seafood menus. Can watch the chef on the outside barbecue!
C.
This is an awesome cafe with heaps of kai moana! Whitebait fritters are a must and if you have kids sit outside. They have a tramp and bikes for the kids to play on.
D.
Our car club (a group of nearly 30 people) decended on Chocolate Fish café for breakfast. We were recommended to arrive before 10am to ensure we could all be seated. I was amazed how the staff managed to cater to the endless queue of customers visiting this very popular restaurant. Delicious! and highly recommended 😋
S.
Excellent as always. Brilliant seafood sandwiches 😊😊😊
B.
Important to note this is basically a seafood cafe. Just in case you have fussy people to feed 😂 lots of yummy options, including cakes. I loved the halloumi corn fritter sandwich. Good coffee too. Only issue is there are a lot of flies in the back patio area. There's plenty of other spots to sit though. 👍☀️
L.
Such a great menu! Lots of gluten free options. Fantastic dessert. Lovely drinks. Wonderful staff. I had a great time
C.
good food and coffee
nice view and great service
perfact for dog and kids
E.
Great food and service. Fantastic for the kids with all the bikes and playground. I ordered halloumi and mushroom burger which was really good. However, I clumsily knocked half of it off the table and one of the guys at chocolate fish noticed and gave me a replacement halloumi and mushroom. Amazing service.
Y.
An appealingly rustic and comfortable cafe offering an interesting menu to please the most critical. At our table of 3 we enjoyed our individual lunch choices very much. Highly recommended except to snobs and glitz lovers.
S.
Couldn't believe how good the service and food was. Set up brilliantly for kids to play in bikes and scooters. V highly rated. 👍
E.
I really enjoyed the T/A hot chocolate and carrot cake that I ordered. Cake was moist, lovely iceing and came with lots of cream. And the hot chocolate was perfect temperature and came with a chocolate fish and marshmallows! Quite pleased will be back.
G.
This is the greatest place in Wellington to go for atmosphere, friendly staff, great food,indoor/outdoor dining. Take the kids and they will have a ball with the bikes and scooters provided, and with plenty of room lo buzz around. Love this place and keep coming back . . .
N.
One of the best cafee in Welly. Should be try the hot chocolate and chocolate cake.. yummy
J.
Great location, great food, slightly on the pricey side for a brunch (20-35 for a meal and drink)
D.
I visited here late afternoon, and must have got there just after the hot/cooked food was not beig offered anymore, so only drinks and cabinet food were avaliable. I really wanted something (anything!) to eat but there was not a single vegan option they could offer - heck I would've eaten toast. I ordered a hot chocolate which was distinctly average, and not a very volumous 'large' size.
H.
Lovely salmon bagel, presented beautifully and gorgeous scenery around. However the halloumi alongside another dish left something to be desired, could have done with more time being cooked. Mango passionfruit milkshakes were average when factoring the price paid.
F.
Great family oriented outdoorsy enjoy the seashore/harbour type cafe. The food is delish, lovely range of BBQ food, good proportions. I go for the atmosphere, the deck chair experience on the large grassy area and the fresh air and sunshine. Unique spot in Welly. Very popular.
i.
I'm biased I must admit as this is mysecond home. We have have been coming here since it opened in Shelly Bay and prior to that when it was in Scorching Bay. So I feel able to give a fair review. The owners and managers go out of their way to try and please all of the people all of the time. Which we know is damn near impossible. But because this place is so good the location superb with something for everyone they do get very close to achieving it. It can get extremely busy particularily when the weather is fine as it is beach side. Food is BBQ style off the grill however they do have some superb salads coming out of the kitchen. Excellent home baking and scones too. Large selection of drinks, best coffee and they are licensed too. Quiet areas if you need it. Front of cafe areas that are child friendly with bikes and scooters to play on. So go and enjoy this unique cafe however if it's busy be patient they're working as hard as they can you will notice this. The wait is worth it.
F.
Was there last two Sundays. I had the bacon and egg sandwich which was nice, however my friend did have to pull a hair out of her mouth from a scone which was a bit gross. They did offer a hot drink for compensation, I didn't think that was adequate compensation but I didn't get involved.
M.
I Love this place, the food is always on point and the coffee is always great! It can get very busy but the noise is never overwhelming and in summer they have a wonderful outside area. I even chose this place for my birthday lunch this year! I recommend making sure you check the special menu to make sure you don't miss anything, and order an iced coffee! So good!
B.
lovely afternoon 4 a cool drink and the views not bad either
T.
Willing to chop and change menu items due to a slow lunch/missing items and the server was more than happy to accommodate.
R.
This is still one of the best cafe locations in Wellington but the food is not as good as it used to be. I'd always recommend their meringue but it's been a while since I've had anything else beyond adequate.
S.
Awesome food, heaps of atmosphere, lots of room for the kiddie winkles to ride their bike's & play. Loved the Rueben Sandwich. When your next in Wellington I highly recommend this cafe you won't be disappointed
S.
Normally this place provide good delicious food but when they are overwhelmed with customers the quality of the food goes down.. enough to notice. I'll recommend this place to anyone who like to visit a nice outdoor setting and don't mind waiting for food.. normal wait time is 20 - 45 minutes. Good place for kids to run around and be busy. Parking is plenty but gets full pretty fast.
L.
Amazing cafe with great food and coffee. Excellent service, really friendly staff. Perfect for young families the kids love it and the team are awesome with the kids. Beautiful location. Favourite cafe in Wellington. A must visit!!
C.
Great for a sunny weekend brunch, sit out on the lawn and enjoy a tasty scallop sandwich and delicious coffee. Can get very busy and the outdoor area attracts a lot of families with young, active children. If this bothers you there is always the quieter indoor courtyard. Friendly service.
J.
Cute little cafe where they BBQ most of their food. Portions are on the smaller side and the food is simple but tasty. Lots of space and bikes outside for the kids to roll around on.
H.
With over 100 people there for lunch, we had whitebait fritters served in under 1/2 hour, with pleasant efficient staff serving water and drinls
T.
Love this place. Awesome for big group hookups on a sunny weekend day or when you’ve got kids with you who you want to keep entertained. Love the plum smoothie - best in Wellington. Great service, friendly staff. Relaxed and casual vibe.
J.
The best cafe of the city. Clean, cosy and it's great for kids as they have heaps of small bicycles for them to ride. With a great view, a lovely staff and, according to my wife, the best chocolate cake of the city.
R.
I specifically came here as I had seen Chocolate Fish recommended as one of the best cafes in Wellington, and it lived up to the hype. It has a great atmosphere as it is right on the harbour, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Their burgers were really tasty, and though I was dubious about it coming with salad instead of chips, it was the perfect amount of food. It is well worth going out of your way to visit!
K.
great place, fantastic spot near to the sea in shelly bay. Our son loved their hamburger. I had the sweet little scallops with a salad. beautiful! the thai fish cakes are good and tasty. Nice wine and beer.
S.
Cracking location, great food, great coffee and lovely owners. This a great place to come with the kids as there are toys, bikes, trikes etc to play on. Good for all ages. Lovely views back over towards the city and the harbour... The cafe specialises in Kai Moana (seafood).
Highly recommended
H.
Scallop sandwich anyone? OMG best detour ever before going to the airport
M.
Beat BBQ'ed scalloped and roasted kumara fries ever. So much flavour packed into both. Accompanied by a fresh tasty salad with pea puree. Divine. Plum and coconut cake was a winner too - not too sweet and fresh ingredients. Highly recommend
A.
Beautiful cafe right on the waterfront. Delicious food and an amazing area for kids.
J.
Great place for food on the way to the airport. Help w choice from staff was fantastic
B.
We go here occasionally. Wonderful concept and great food.
My daughter and I both had the Greek Salad with fish, awesome fresh flavours but we agreed - a little stingey on the quantities for $24.
m.
Great place to bring kids as bikes toys and trampoline to play with.had the vege burger not impressed was very greasy everything was fried instead portabello mushroom and eggplant should be grilled would have made it nicer. Even the kumera chips were very greasy and shiny 4 star for location and being very kid friendly. 2 star for the burger
G.
Lovely arrangement for small groups, big groups and groups with kids. Some of the play bikes are getting tired, but they're actually so popular, it's bound to happen. Food is great, too. All kinds of tastes, regardless of food requirements.
R.
Ate the triple B special burger. Might have been the best burger I ever ate.
J.
Wonderful experience. Lovely food, great staff. Great atmosphere
r.
The chocolate fish is our go to for brunch. Good food and fantastic location. Great for kids with rideable (scooters and trikes) out the front. Can get busy but does not affect service or the wait for food like some other places in Wellington.
b.
They have a fantastic outdoor seating. I went there on a bright sunny day to read a book and I loved every bit of the experience. The food itself was good but slightly pricey. There were many kids playing around giving it a complete family atmosphere.
C.
Amazing service, food was excellent, our time spent there was awesone
Z.
Great place with kids especially in nice weather. There are lots of bikes and trikes for the little ones to ride. The food is a bit pricey and small portion. You definitely pay for the view here.
S.
Highly recommend. Great, prompt service. Pretty sweet kai too. We had a very informative overview from our waiter which was ideal as this was our first visit. Waiter offered to serve a variety of sammie choices which suited us. We chose a sammie each and shared. OMG! If you're after pleasing your sweet tooth...a MEAN AS carrot cake + other delicious food.
Only disappointment was the water for our table. The water wasn't nice at all. We politely mentioned this to the waitress. She offered to bring more water.
This spot is a MUST GO!
A.
Relaxed small rooms, warm and comfortable, friendly prompt service, delicious fresh food (excellent fresh fish sandwiches, good range of other cooked sammies, incl gf). Lots of happy customers!
M.
Any absolutely wonderful local gem. It's not often you find a place that makes you feel happy about our society. Run by good people who care and have done an amazing job to create a place that is an experience not just a place to eat good food. Very kid friendly and heaps of parking. I'll be back with my family again and again.
T.
Great food and excellent seating outside
W.
A nice cafe to drive to as the surroundings are beautiful. Has a play area for kids outside you can't miss it. Food wise it has an extensuve menu of sandwiches and cakes, but not much of anything else as that's all they do. A place for a casual quick bite but not for proper dining experience.
C.
Absolutely incredible sandwiches, but they're really let down by using disposable cups and straws for their smoothies. They don't have the time or space to wash glassware according to their manager. I guess nature will figure it out... But definitely worth a visit for the sammies.
J.
Lovely lunch and play on trikes! A busy Waitangi Day but still great service and quick !!
D.
A great place for brunch. Very child friendly with the toys outside to keep your little one occupied. There's also space reserved for those without children, so it really caters to everyone. The food is great!
D.
Amazing service. Great gf, df and vegan options. And good coffee as well. Bit of a drive but definitely worth it.
Outdoor seating is optional and they also have a closed off outdoor area which is good for bigger groups.
T.
Nice food. Reasonable prices. Delicious smoothies! Good selection for kids and restricted diets. Brilliant kid-friendly play area outside. Dog-friendly outside. Rustic charm to the hilt - like brunch at a beachside bach!
T.
HANDS DOWN BEST BACON AND EGG TOASTED SANDWICH! Loads of space for the kids to play with lots of ride on toys. Food and service go hand in hand. Never had issues when we visit on the weekends. I pop in for the odd coffee when cycling through.
A.
Such a great cafe. The fish sandwiches with freshly caught fish are wonderful. Excellent staff. Great location and wonderful outside when the weather is good.
T.
Lovely whitebait fritters and pork sammies served in special surroundings, outside on superb day. Highly recommended and iconic
A.
Absolutely awesome, friendly cheerful staff, scrummy food, buzzing atmosphere with lots of choices for eating areas.
Keep up the great work.
L.
Delicious fare and a lovely outdoor eating area. Lots of toys and bikes for kids to play on.
C.
Great views, good food. Perfect place to enjoy the sun. The chocolate brownie is a must. The chocolate fish cake is a good second option, specially with coffee. The almond merengue is also nice. I tried more deserts than savory dishes so far.
E.
Best tomato soup I have ever had ..
R.
Kid friendly and great food. Lots for the little ones to do with all the free to use scooters, bikes and carts. Trampoline too. Very popular spot with tables hard to come by. Great spot.
J.
Cool place with a big crowd. The food is excellent although a bit on the pricey side. $15 for a fish sandwich, but it was a damn good fish sandwich. There is plenty of seating inside and out (mostly outside) and an adult only courtyard as the front is littered with toys and tots as this is a good family hangout/restaurant. Recommend to check it out if you're in Wellington. Kayaking to this place is apparently a thing to do from the Wellington harbour.
A.
This place is such a gem in Wellington. Awesome setting and a really interesting menu. Don't go if your tastes are bland! Would recommend the toasted sandwiches.
S.
This funky cafe has great food, location and atmosphere but my only complaint is it's pricey otherwise it would have been 5 stars.
N.
Cool cafe environment. Heaps of cool stuff for kids outside. Hats and sunscreen provided. Beautiful views. Awesome and fast service. No deep frying permitted on their menu which is great. Sammie's are aammmaaaazzzziiinngggg.
R.
Nice place to have sit in the sun and enjoy a drink. I had an iced mocha for $8 and it was insanely good.
Also the interior has a great retro feel to it. Looks like the kind of mysterious building you would want to explore.
J.
Fast service! Good menu! Great hospitality! What else would you want from a cute roadside cafe. There was lots to choose from and I'm proud of this place. Though the milkshakes name could be a little confusing.
N.
Amazing Reuben sandwich! Was my second visit here, stopping for lunch after a flight. Place was pretty busy but wasn't a long wait at all. Nice courtyard area, sunny but sheltered from elements.
L.
I love the relaxed feel of this cafe. Food you can share which is well priced and always interesting. Great service, friendly waiters and a pleasant outlook of the sea makes for a very enjoyable time.
C.
Beautiful spot in Shelly Bay. There are scooters and bikes for kids to play on while you have your coffee and enjoy the stunning views of the harbour across to the city. Large outdoor area which is perfect in summer. Interior decor is funky and fun to look at if the Wellington wind forces you indoors.
A.
Cool little place to hang out mid morning mid week...food top notch..service quick..staff awesome...pity the wind didn't play ball😊😊
T.
Super friendly staff, yummy food, different seating options (indoors/outdoors, chairs, picnic tables, bean bags), a safe play area for children with lots of bicycles and a mini playground, and they even provide free sunblock so punters can enjoy the amazing view without getting burnt. We spent hours there!
M.
Lovely venue for a good view, great coffee and room for kids to play. Full Kai Moana menu, so just know that if you're not keen on seafood.
S.
The 10 foodies from Summerset Levin have just returned following a terrific lunch at the Chocolate Fish where once again we experienced a wonderful meal and exceptional customer service. We will be back for another chocolate fish in the not too distant future.
Thank you.
E.
Really good service and delicious food, will definetly go there again.
B.
Delicious kai & the awesome staff.
B.
If you've never been there it is worth a visit. Set inside Palmers Garden Center. Great service, delicious food & cakes and good selection of beverages. You can sit inside the cafe or you can sit outside in the covered table area that looks out onto the plants.
P.
The barbeque fish sandwiches are some of the finest food I've eaten. Simple, super fresh and created lovingly. The staff all appear proud of their work and are kind. It's a big café with plenty of space for family and friends to get together. It has a crafty, kiwiana vibe and is cozy. When it's sunny there is a fantastic array of cars and bikes for kids to play on and a big lawn to stretch out on. I'm a massive fan.
M.
Great location, great service, staff and chef happily met our tables dining requirements on a very busy morning. Some kids on scooters. Will return next trip
M.
Fresh seafood, tasty. Bit pricey for the portions and no fries; get thee a frier. Delicious cakes and the greena colada is 👌🏽 Great place for kids to go buckwild outside while the parents sit back in the sun enjoying the view. A Welly institution.
F.
A variety of seating sites be outdoors indoors or a mix of both. Gorgeous views if outside. Coffee amazing food delectable and fabulous front and back staff.
K.
Really fun location with studios around it, good coffee and al kinds of bikes for kids. Relaxed atmosphere. Go there if you're in Wellington. You won't have the feeling of being in a city.
K.
Amazing family friendly cafe with plenty to entertain the kids with outside whilst taking in the views of the harbour! Delicious food and fast service. Couldn't top it!
S.
Never disappoints in regards good fast service and hearty food (especially the seafood chowder). I take out of town friends and family there before catching their flights out.
W.
The only things going for this cafe are it's quaint setting, the amazingly patient wait staff and the fact that it's terribly kid friendly(dangerously so).
They have a reasonable sized patch dedicated to drift trikes/bikes/scooters and all manner of wheeled choas. They also have a springfree tramp.
The only trouble is that this kids area is in the middle of the place(parents get ringside seats to watch other parents...interesting... parenting skills) and where the wait staff have to either circumnavigate the works or run the gauntlet of young children hyped up on soda, juice, cocktail sausages and chocolate fish armed with the aforementioned kit.
Meals look good/read well on the menu but fail to deliver in real life in both size and quality, especially when considering the not insubstantial premium you are paying.
Staff were very good and as attentive as they could be considering the crowd on the stunning day we visited. Meal wait times were okay considering demand.
But we won't be going back for a while, not till they've had a chance to improve.
1. First aid box in plain site to cater for the many bumps and scrapes. ICE, DETOL, SPRAY ON BANDAID. (put a donation box on top of it to fund it and it'll prolly make enough to fund a defib machine over time)
2. The rock numbers are quaint(cute) and wont blow away but a nightmare for staff on a busy day as they get lost on the tables amid the glasses and plates.
3. Make sure the food quality matches the description and is big enough that you don't leave hungry after paying >$80 for lunch for 2 and a kid with 4 drinks.
4. Clean and restock the loos a bit more often, ....kids.... esp boys ... nuf said.
I.
Great location, great food and super fast service. What more could you ask for.
A.
Great place for the kids to play on a sunny day. Loads of bikes and toys to play with. Breakfast menu is a bit limited compared to other places. Coffee and cakes are good though.
N.
Friendly service and I love their cheese scones! Great for families with an outdoor play area.
B.
Great service! Great food and when it's a nice day it's a great view. Would definitely recommend and totally worth the drive. Has plenty of options for food intolerances.
T.
Fantastic range of kai and drinks and great playground for the kiddies too
A.
Really good menu and food was amazing. The outdoor seating area was really nice too!
p.
Dog and kids friendly with excellent views back to the city. The black Doris plum smoothie is to die for
G.
Great! It's quirky and relaxed most of the time. At it's best on beautiful sunny days, it's still pretty good even when it rains. Food and coffee is good, and plenty of space in multiple seating areas.
B.
Absolute Wellington icon. All the locals know this is the best place to get fresh paua and whitebait fritters etc. Black doris plum smoothies great. Sit outside with a view of the rocky shore / old wharf area. Situated at the old Shelley bay air force base.
c.
Sat outside today and had delicious sandwiches, it was blazing hot sun so was really impressed to see they suplied sunscreen and sun hats, heaps of iced water. Will return for sure. Ps our little doggies were comfortable in the shade of the table.
J.
Excellent place to take kids on a sunny day. Cool spot out back for adults without kids. Great seafood chowder, and bacon egg Sammie. Triple B burger is good
B.
This place is always good. Great food and quick service, nothing is ever a problem here. The food is also a good price.
This place also has a good view on a nice day.
D.
Good coffee and view. Has a great little kids area filled with toys with wheels! Bring a hat just in case you get a table away from the covered area.
A.
Lovely food and super friendly staff. Highly recommended 😊
R.
Love this place. Kids friendly and great location. Good food, good service and a favourite spot on a good day
H.
Friendly staff, delicious food and a good place for young families or older folk. Eat indoors or outdoors. Plenty of options.
L.
Great chill vibes. Kids have a blast too. Too many wasps for my liking though.
R.
Wonderful hosts, John,Penny, Vanessa and Dave make sure every visit is an enjoyable one. Their excellent coffee is complimented with a varied and delicious menu.
S.
Unique and special. Really friendly people who run it. Simple food yet delightful flavours. Go there!!!
A.
Sweet place with a casual and comfortable atmosphere. Would 100% recommend it.
D.
A awesome destination when we finally found it. But its remoteness is part of the attraction. Great food, I recommend the Triple B Burger.
J.
Great spot for fresh and tasty fish dishes as well as good coffee. Plenty of outdoor seating to bask in that sweet sun too! Well worth the drive!
D.
Great cafe, delicious food, huge outdoor area with beautiful views, and super kid and pram friendly. Lots of ride ons for the bigger kids to play on while the big people converse. Lots of free parking.
M.
Favourite Cafe for the kids to run around and for us to soak up the sun
D.
Be aware... their "Large" coffee is not 12ozs - its only 9ozs... same price as everyone elses 12oz though - and the quality is just the same.
M.
One of our favorite places in wellington to go for a coffee and take the dog. Yummy food (the pork belly sandwich is delicious!), lovely staff, incredible views across the bay back to wellington. Fantastic!
Z.
Weekend, sunshine? This cafe is an excelent choice. Great food and drinks, quick service, plenty of toys for kids. Gluten free options. Dog friendly.
H.
Best place for a seafood sammie
T.
Warm, friendly service, nice food and good coffee! The Chocolate Fish cafe provides an awesome atmosphere and is in a beautiful location, will definitely be back (again) 😍

M.
Such a fun place especially in the summer, outdoor area in the middle where the littles can play, small trikes provided. Perfect for young families and adults.
B.
Good basic but very tasty food. Fantastic place for the kids as they love playing on the trikes and the slide. Servers good coffee, beer and wine as well
S.
There are few better places to spend an hour or so on a beautiful day. Cycle out to this spot and enjoy a coffee on the lawn looking out over the ocean. It doesn't get much better.
S.
Saturday 11am is a busy time. If you're after a fast coffee you may have to be more patient. Good food for brunch
S.
Absolutely relaxing cafe, helpful friendly staff, lovely outdoor and indoor vibe, fantastic food, love the meringue, scallops and whitebait dishes absolutely wonderful and up to the minute fresh thinking, alcohol and hot and cold drinks available, wheelchair access,
A.
The BBQ sandwiches are overpriced and disappointing. Cakes and coffee pull up the score though. Nice setting on a good day.
U.
I often came here when I lived in Wellington. I mostly ordered milkshakes, and I liked how they came with a chocolate fish as topping (meaning that this place lives up to its name!).
D.
Brilliant. Visited with a group and were given our own area with nice heating. Efficient service and great food. Highly recommended.
M.
Good parking. Great access. Indoor outdoor dining. Fish sandwiches the best ever. Fair charges. Great play area for children.
N.
Bacon and egg sammie was stunning super nice service 5 stars
L.
Food fabulous, didn't know the cafe was there, too much of a secret. The decor was excellent and the setting as well. The smoked salmon was to die for.
R.
Delicious food, specialises in fresh sandwiches (mine was fish of the day and bacon). Amazing for kids with bikes available to ride.
S.
An institution, a little quirky but in the best way: great coffee and food, amazing views and staff arrived by kids, dogs and all sorts.
I.
Beautiful coffee and a magnificent fish sandwich, doesn't sound ace but omg - what a cool place.
J.

Fabulous lunch with grandson and friend. I highly recommend this cafe.
A.
Great service, magnificent food, what's not to love about the location. Go today!
K.
I don't really get the hype? Perhaps I had over inflated expectations...?
While I enjoyed myself and the service/food/coffee were all Okay... I wouldn't rush back, and wouldn't suggest Chocolate Fish as a "Must Visit" Wellington Location. Equally, if friends had plans to Lunch here - I wouldn't refuse to go back.
V.
Nice place to take the kids, there's bikes and stuff for them to play on, if you like chocolate fish, they practically serve it with everything. Not too shabby.
