I'm a big fan of this place. The standard fancy fish sandwich is lovely, the potato cake is fluffy on the inside and crisp on the out. My partner said his choc shake was delicious and scrambled eggs were soft and tasty. And the coffee was divine. On a nice day you can sit outside and admire the waterside view. This place is super kid and dog friendly as well.

Perfect restaurant spot for enjoying a sunny day in Wellington! Most of the tables are outdoor, they have some hats and sunblock if needed. The place has a very casual and familiar vibe. We ordered both fish and they both were on point, just delicious. Salads perfectly seasoned too. A must go in Wellington (on a sunny day..)

Super brilliant chocolate fish cake, so tasty!! Also recommend the ice latte, perfect flavour. It was a bad weather but I feel so happy after I enjoyed their food, next time will try their food on menu!

Fabulous staff. Great wait staff. Delicious meal. Was there when a party of 3 constantly complained to the young waiter who handled it amazingly well. There was nothing to complain about either!!! . Don't know how you do it. Loved that your boss came out and supported you.

It’s a quirky place, all the chairs are painted with differently and inside feels more like someone’s house then a cafe sometimes, but the food is pretty great and the staff are friendly.

Family friendly....areas for little ones whilst giving adults space to relax .. Food great! Interesting and a little different from the run of the mill cafe... I visited yesterday....expecting to sit on bean bags with a view across the harbour.....now replaced with old school deckchairs! Delightful location!

Great food and great customer service, plus a really lovely environment. Unfortunately had to witness staff spoken down to and argued with by a rude and belligerent customer. Staff handled it like pros and were very professional. Can't recommend this place enough, we often get gift vouchers from here for presents.

Very close to Camp Wellington where we stayed last month. It was recommended we visit and have a taste of what they have on the menu. Didn't disappoint. We had light meals, but it was perfect. Lots of parking space outside. They also have a play area for the kids to enjoy. Amazing view at the front. A cool place to chill after a long drive from Auckland. Definitely will be coming back to try other menu offerings.

Love love loved this place accidentally came across it will driving along the bay heading towards Mirama absolutely delish this cafe, beautiful views, outdoor area was perfect for the sunny day and they had bikes and trikes for busy kids so as a parent you can actually enjoy the coffee instead of rushing off, definitely a must go to place! Always love going here. Today we took my 16 year old daughter for her Birthday lunch, she choose to go. We love the burgers and gluten free friendly too 💖

Busy day, and great service. Date scone was great with lots of fruit. Good play area and toys for kids.

The food is great, staff too. Would rate higher except for the cost. 2 snack sized meals, 1 coffee, 2 iced chocolates and a cake... $70. Ouch. Definitely not good value for money. Would be back more often for the food, but similar offerings elsewhere for much less, my visits here will only be very occasional.

Used to go here quite a lot but recently it has been a bit of a let down. Ended up getting the big breakfast which was nice but definitely seems to have changed recently. Also ended up getting a chicken salad on another occasion which was actually very mediocre. Not sure if the owners have changed but either way, it's such a shame the quality has gone down hill as used to love coming here.

Absolutely fantastic out of the way spot. Hands down the nicest seafood chowder I’ve had in a long time. True kiwiana menu. And don’t go past the black Doris plum or Feijoa and ginger smoothies - absolutely fantastic.

Love this place, try not to change it please. Many Vegan & vegetarian options. Fantastic staff, fast service. Pictured is the Vege Burger made vegan. It has mushrooms, eggplant, vegan dressings, vegan pesto sauce from memory. Delicious sweet potato chips. On a previous visit, I had their Chia smoothie bowl, delicious too. Great coffee, vegan slices available, though I was too full to try. Plenty of space, seating inside & out. Loads of cool bikes, trikes for kids to ride. Set off the road, though keep an eye on your kids as it is open and the road near by. Many people walking, cycling and running on the road, great to see.

Dog friendly and delicious. Everything on the menu looked absolutely delicious. Perfect way to spend Wellington on a good day. Plenty of space for kids to hoon around and incredibly accommodating and welcoming to our four legged diner. Even offering him a biscuit.

Amazing food and very friendly staff. We had the veggie and the triple b burgers and the tomato soup of the day. It was all so good. You could taste the ingredients was of good quality. The atmosphere was cosy (we sat under the plastic roof with the terrace heaters while the rain was pouring. We had a blast. Would definitely go again and recommend to others. If you are visiting, hire a car and visit the Chocolate Fish Cafe and also drive around the scenic route. The prices are a little on the steep side (but typical for inner city cafe) - the food is fresh and delicious, and staff are friendly and attentive. It can get a little windy! If you have going kids they will enjoy the free play area.

The only time when I didn't have to plan anything or to go anywhere was in Wellington. After 5 hours driving all the way down from Taupo, the last thing that I wanted was to think on what to eat. Lucky for me, a dear friend of mine, Sean, was being a good host. Not only he extended his hospitality by inviting me to stay at his place, he also took good care of me all the time while I was in the capital of New Zealand. So instead of bringing me to nearby place, he drove all the way to Shelly Bay which was located on the Miramar Peninsula. It is a very nice cafe with an equally nice sea view. Bummer that it was drizzling when we reached (also the fact that it was winter so the weather was very cold). The kids took an instant liking to the cafe right away - spacious & cosy! This cafe is famous for sammies - seriously I only understood what sammies are when the food was served in front of me.. sandwiches!! Some of the sammies that we had - fresh fish of the day, bacon & egg, streaky bacon, and also Angus beef burger! Needless to say, everything was prepared from scratch and served hot. We had a tummy warming sandwiches for breakfast and left the cafe happily. Apart from sammies, they also serve bagels and burgers too. Normally the cafe will be packed on weekends and when it is sunny.

its a lovely place and all, but the menu was very confusing to read, and my fish sandwich had a really thin piece of fish in like not even enough to cover the whole sandwich and 2 little leaves of Spanish and the Kumara chips with hallumi plate were way to expensive for what it was. it was only worth $8 in my eyes not $13.50. there was all about 10 chips in there . the food is way to expensive for it is. it's a shame because the staff are amazing and super friendly!!

Delicious, traditional seafood chowder with plenty of white fish and prawns. Not padded out with potatoes and gritty molluscs as seen in other cafés. Served with crispy white toast and croutons. Good value for $21

Great place to sit and watch the day go by. Great friendly service, good coffee and their bliss balls are To die for. Pooch friendly, with dog spot and they even have treats for your pooch, our boy loves it there. Iced coffee to die for!

It's hard to find bad coffee in Welly (coffee capital) and this place is no exception... it was also sunny and not windy (a bonus, which happens about 5 days a year!!)

Beautifully situated seven minutes drive from the airport this is a good place to have a cuppa whilst waiting for your friend's or famiky member's plane to arrive. If they text you before they get off the plane you should arrive in perfect time to collect them from the arrivals pick up area. Awesome place to relax & chat with others over a coffee (& food!) whilst the kids play on the bikes and pedal cars. Wonderful views - this faces west and gets the warm afternoon sun - of the harbour and the city. We watched a couple of people successfully fish with rods/poles from their kayak just out from the shore. Good for spotting planes too when they land from the north.

Big outdoor setting filled with rowdy kids. This place is perfect for parents, who refuse to give up on brunch. Chocolate Fish has a large menu, including a specific kids menu, focused mainly on seafood, sandwiches, and roughshod burgers. It is below Wellington standard, but would easily match expectations of the average state highway tearooms....if they were reliant only on a large barbecue. Be warned there are no sweet breakfast options, in case that's what you're hankering for. There is a wide range of drinks though, so the Tui-drinker is as at home as the craft beer snob. The views back onto Wellington are the real draw card, and on a sunny day you're spoilt with picnic tables, lounge chairs and a big play area for children. Mind the seagulls, and avoid if hung over.

Best location in Wellington for an outdoor brunch with sea views and child friendly. Excellent food and coffee at fair pricing. The seafood chowder and paua sandwich are wholesome, tasty and priced well below most eateries in the region

Lovely eclectic place, plenty of parking, lots of tables (none matching), excellent staff and super kiwi options on the menu. However, prices are nuts in NZ, don't really understand how the average kiwi can afford to pay for this type of meal. $25 for some fritters is mad.

How's good a cray fish sandwich? Almost as good as Austell fritter sandwich. This place is epic

Lovely place to stop off for a coffee and something to eat. Friendly, efficient staff, consistently good food and drinks and a great atmosphere. There are choices for seating options, inside, outside out the back which is a closed in conservatory, outside on the grass, outside on the deck or outside on the concrete under sun shades. Dogs and children are welcome here, there is a supply of dog biscuits and water bowls for the 4 legged friends and for the children there is a great menu along with bikes, a trampoline and climbing toys to keep them amused. Chocolate Fish only have a grill to prepare hot food so have a wide variety of hot Sandwiches and other great stuff but no hot chips. We love to meet friends here as there are lovely big tables and it is great to bring out of town guests as it is a little bit different.

I don't know how I've never actually managed to come here after living in Wellington my whole life. Enjoyed a delicious crayfish sandwich on an unseasonably warm winters morning with my fiance and dog. Awesome staff, great vibe and super family friendly.

Lovely place for breakfast, we can sit outdoors zone under morning sunshine. This place serves with fresh and local ingredient.

The food portions and presentation is poor. The fancy sandwiches are anything but fancy. I would not go to this cafe if it simply food you are after. And the prices are shockingly high for what is delivered. However, it significantly redeems itself (all three of the above stars) for the space it has for the kids and all the toys. I will be back, as I prefer to enjoy full conversations along with mediocre food without interruption from my kids, versus amazing food that I can't focus on because my kids are bored out of their trees. (I will feed the kids before hand so that I don't pauper myself!) I would avoid avoid avoid if you are kid free!

What a fabulous place. I could have sat here all afternoon enjoying the kids playing on the supplied toys, the food, wonderful milkshakes, and tranquil senery. Toilets were keen...Staff were friendly, ample parking, with a free water station outdoors. Dogs are welcome and sat nicely at their owners table. I totally reccomend the trip out here.

What can I say. One of the busiest days iv seen them have. Short staffed and the head chef running the food. And yet. No dissapointments what's so ever, the triple B burger is possibly the finest burger I have ever had. Perfect proportions and just an excellent amount of sauce. The pate is a must and the coffee never disappoints

Fantastic overly generous slice of Carrot Cake and scores 9.5 out of 10! Just yummy with cream too! Top value. The ginger slice is good too, but perhaps just a little more on the plate? We went in for afternoon tea. Yep that's very British especially as we ordered Earl Grey. Now that can be a risky business in the Southern Hemisphere. However, I'm pleased to report not here! A real good tasty tea, well balanced, refreshing and hits the spot. If you're bothered by young children zooming around, its a great family space BTW, then walk on. However, if you find a quiet space then enjoy! Top service, great cakes and top tasting tea.

Or perhaps sitting way away from the children! Quirky inside filled with affordable art Miramar has on offer. This is the place.

Always a treat when we are in NZ, Friendly staff with Great views and good food, family friendly with alot of play area for the kids they have trampolines, play house, bikes and trikes, also have alot of seating areas for big groups. If your just getting of the plane or flying out or just checking out Peter Jackson studios (Weta Studios) it's definitely worth checking out even just for coffee's and thier cabinet foods.

This is pretty much the perfect cafe for people who like kids and/or BBQ seafood.

Very friendly and efficient staff. It was extremely busy but wait time wasn't too bad. Table of 8 and everyone seemed happy with their meal, however, the seafood chowder was very average.

A very eclectic place, very popular due to the good food and coffee, easy free parking and on a sunny day in Wellington you can't go wrong. Always very busy but you are told how long you will wait for food so I'm happy with that. Lovely sunny spot to watch the world go by.

Simple food made well. I find that this is a fantastic place where you can go to look at the water, let the kids play and have a drink. The menu has lots of sandwiches and also and excellent simple kids menu too, perfect for your little picky eaters. Before going be aware that this place is extremely popular especially on a warm summers day, even so the staff seem to get your food out fast even with a full house. Definitely recommend!

Delicious kai, value for money, friendly and pleasant staff, agree a little bit on a higher price range, however the produce is fresh and the meals are tasty. The choice is yours. I enjoy treating myself at this lovely cafe once in a while. The view is remarkable.

Been there twice and LOVE it! Staff super friendly and helpful, food great, specially the chocolate fish cake :) venue amazing, love the atmosphere! The only, tinyest, suggestion I might have is for a wider veriety on the menu, not really a burger and sammie kinda girl.

Amazing place located in Miramar. They have some of the best cakes I've so far tried in Wellington. Be sure to check out the chocolate cake! When the weather's good, you can sit outside, where they have an extensive playground area for kids too.

A lovely spot away from the rustle and bustle of the city, fresh air and great views. A good variety on the menu...I had the paua fritter, at $17.00 I would have liked to taste the paua... the fritter was soooo thin, looked like paua, unfortunately did not taste like paua. Apart from that, our iced coffee, chocolate slice, tea, and ice block were a treat.

Still reliably great food, great setting, great coffee, year after year. More gluten free options these days, as well as other offerings for this that are dairy free or vegan.

Really liked this quirky cafe. In the middle of nowhere, but served great food with a smile. Fast service, and a small ordering error immediately rectified. Food was excellent. Best whitebait fritter sandwich I've had, and wife loved the chicken liver pate. Drinks were great too. Lots of parking, and even though we enjoyed it on howling freezing gale, on a hot summers day it'd be magic. Highly recommended.

Also tried their almond butter toast - and got the fully loaded version that included honey, sliced bananas and cocoa nibs. They warned me this wouldn't be great for takeout. And I'm glad to have the chance to sit in and enjoy this - it was very filling and each bite was perfect. Healthy, naturally sweet and wholesome. They also had some beautiful scones - didn't order any but will be back to try one.

Awesome food. I had delicious hot crayfish sandwich and my friend had bacon and egg sandwich, all cooked on a BBQ. Outstanding atmosphere, there's even an area for kids to ride a variety of bikes that are provided. Outdoor and indoor seating. Bean bags on the grass looking out to the ocean. Very cool place.

Amazing how they can manage to serve such great food from a barbecue type environment. Was a great sunny winters day when we visited and was packed. Good play equipment for kids too. Only downside would be no fencing to stop stray grandchildren from heading off to the road.

Set in the historic RNZAF base in Shelly Bay, Wellington. Would highly recommend a visit.

Nice cafe with a decent choice on the menu. Great for small kids as there are trikes and bikes free to play with and lots of outdoor seating. Waiters were excellent, very on the ball.

Great cafe, plenty to entertain the kids

This is a remarkable place with a very unprepossessing exterior down by the sea. Very busy. Plenty of stuff for kids to do outside. Lovely seafood menus. Can watch the chef on the outside barbecue!

This is an awesome cafe with heaps of kai moana! Whitebait fritters are a must and if you have kids sit outside. They have a tramp and bikes for the kids to play on.

Our car club (a group of nearly 30 people) decended on Chocolate Fish café for breakfast. We were recommended to arrive before 10am to ensure we could all be seated. I was amazed how the staff managed to cater to the endless queue of customers visiting this very popular restaurant. Delicious! and highly recommended 😋

Important to note this is basically a seafood cafe. Just in case you have fussy people to feed 😂 lots of yummy options, including cakes. I loved the halloumi corn fritter sandwich. Good coffee too. Only issue is there are a lot of flies in the back patio area. There's plenty of other spots to sit though. 👍☀️

Great food and service. Fantastic for the kids with all the bikes and playground. I ordered halloumi and mushroom burger which was really good. However, I clumsily knocked half of it off the table and one of the guys at chocolate fish noticed and gave me a replacement halloumi and mushroom. Amazing service.

An appealingly rustic and comfortable cafe offering an interesting menu to please the most critical. At our table of 3 we enjoyed our individual lunch choices very much. Highly recommended except to snobs and glitz lovers.

I really enjoyed the T/A hot chocolate and carrot cake that I ordered. Cake was moist, lovely iceing and came with lots of cream. And the hot chocolate was perfect temperature and came with a chocolate fish and marshmallows! Quite pleased will be back.

This is the greatest place in Wellington to go for atmosphere, friendly staff, great food,indoor/outdoor dining. Take the kids and they will have a ball with the bikes and scooters provided, and with plenty of room lo buzz around. Love this place and keep coming back . . .

I visited here late afternoon, and must have got there just after the hot/cooked food was not beig offered anymore, so only drinks and cabinet food were avaliable. I really wanted something (anything!) to eat but there was not a single vegan option they could offer - heck I would've eaten toast. I ordered a hot chocolate which was distinctly average, and not a very volumous 'large' size.

Lovely salmon bagel, presented beautifully and gorgeous scenery around. However the halloumi alongside another dish left something to be desired, could have done with more time being cooked. Mango passionfruit milkshakes were average when factoring the price paid.

Great family oriented outdoorsy enjoy the seashore/harbour type cafe. The food is delish, lovely range of BBQ food, good proportions. I go for the atmosphere, the deck chair experience on the large grassy area and the fresh air and sunshine. Unique spot in Welly. Very popular.

I'm biased I must admit as this is mysecond home. We have have been coming here since it opened in Shelly Bay and prior to that when it was in Scorching Bay. So I feel able to give a fair review. The owners and managers go out of their way to try and please all of the people all of the time. Which we know is damn near impossible. But because this place is so good the location superb with something for everyone they do get very close to achieving it. It can get extremely busy particularily when the weather is fine as it is beach side. Food is BBQ style off the grill however they do have some superb salads coming out of the kitchen. Excellent home baking and scones too. Large selection of drinks, best coffee and they are licensed too. Quiet areas if you need it. Front of cafe areas that are child friendly with bikes and scooters to play on. So go and enjoy this unique cafe however if it's busy be patient they're working as hard as they can you will notice this. The wait is worth it.

Was there last two Sundays. I had the bacon and egg sandwich which was nice, however my friend did have to pull a hair out of her mouth from a scone which was a bit gross. They did offer a hot drink for compensation, I didn't think that was adequate compensation but I didn't get involved.

I Love this place, the food is always on point and the coffee is always great! It can get very busy but the noise is never overwhelming and in summer they have a wonderful outside area. I even chose this place for my birthday lunch this year! I recommend making sure you check the special menu to make sure you don't miss anything, and order an iced coffee! So good!

This is still one of the best cafe locations in Wellington but the food is not as good as it used to be. I'd always recommend their meringue but it's been a while since I've had anything else beyond adequate.

Normally this place provide good delicious food but when they are overwhelmed with customers the quality of the food goes down.. enough to notice. I'll recommend this place to anyone who like to visit a nice outdoor setting and don't mind waiting for food.. normal wait time is 20 - 45 minutes. Good place for kids to run around and be busy. Parking is plenty but gets full pretty fast.

The best cafe of the city. Clean, cosy and it's great for kids as they have heaps of small bicycles for them to ride. With a great view, a lovely staff and, according to my wife, the best chocolate cake of the city.

I specifically came here as I had seen Chocolate Fish recommended as one of the best cafes in Wellington, and it lived up to the hype. It has a great atmosphere as it is right on the harbour, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Their burgers were really tasty, and though I was dubious about it coming with salad instead of chips, it was the perfect amount of food. It is well worth going out of your way to visit!

Beat BBQ'ed scalloped and roasted kumara fries ever. So much flavour packed into both. Accompanied by a fresh tasty salad with pea puree. Divine. Plum and coconut cake was a winner too - not too sweet and fresh ingredients. Highly recommend

Great place to bring kids as bikes toys and trampoline to play with.had the vege burger not impressed was very greasy everything was fried instead portabello mushroom and eggplant should be grilled would have made it nicer. Even the kumera chips were very greasy and shiny 4 star for location and being very kid friendly. 2 star for the burger

Lovely arrangement for small groups, big groups and groups with kids. Some of the play bikes are getting tired, but they're actually so popular, it's bound to happen. Food is great, too. All kinds of tastes, regardless of food requirements.

The chocolate fish is our go to for brunch. Good food and fantastic location. Great for kids with rideable (scooters and trikes) out the front. Can get busy but does not affect service or the wait for food like some other places in Wellington.

They have a fantastic outdoor seating. I went there on a bright sunny day to read a book and I loved every bit of the experience. The food itself was good but slightly pricey. There were many kids playing around giving it a complete family atmosphere.

Highly recommend. Great, prompt service. Pretty sweet kai too. We had a very informative overview from our waiter which was ideal as this was our first visit. Waiter offered to serve a variety of sammie choices which suited us. We chose a sammie each and shared. OMG! If you're after pleasing your sweet tooth...a MEAN AS carrot cake + other delicious food. Only disappointment was the water for our table. The water wasn't nice at all. We politely mentioned this to the waitress. She offered to bring more water. This spot is a MUST GO!

Any absolutely wonderful local gem. It's not often you find a place that makes you feel happy about our society. Run by good people who care and have done an amazing job to create a place that is an experience not just a place to eat good food. Very kid friendly and heaps of parking. I'll be back with my family again and again.

A nice cafe to drive to as the surroundings are beautiful. Has a play area for kids outside you can't miss it. Food wise it has an extensuve menu of sandwiches and cakes, but not much of anything else as that's all they do. A place for a casual quick bite but not for proper dining experience.

Absolutely incredible sandwiches, but they're really let down by using disposable cups and straws for their smoothies. They don't have the time or space to wash glassware according to their manager. I guess nature will figure it out... But definitely worth a visit for the sammies.

Cool place with a big crowd. The food is excellent although a bit on the pricey side. $15 for a fish sandwich, but it was a damn good fish sandwich. There is plenty of seating inside and out (mostly outside) and an adult only courtyard as the front is littered with toys and tots as this is a good family hangout/restaurant. Recommend to check it out if you're in Wellington. Kayaking to this place is apparently a thing to do from the Wellington harbour.

Super friendly staff, yummy food, different seating options (indoors/outdoors, chairs, picnic tables, bean bags), a safe play area for children with lots of bicycles and a mini playground, and they even provide free sunblock so punters can enjoy the amazing view without getting burnt. We spent hours there!

Lovely venue for a good view, great coffee and room for kids to play. Full Kai Moana menu, so just know that if you're not keen on seafood.

The 10 foodies from Summerset Levin have just returned following a terrific lunch at the Chocolate Fish where once again we experienced a wonderful meal and exceptional customer service. We will be back for another chocolate fish in the not too distant future. Thank you.

If you've never been there it is worth a visit. Set inside Palmers Garden Center. Great service, delicious food & cakes and good selection of beverages. You can sit inside the cafe or you can sit outside in the covered table area that looks out onto the plants.

The barbeque fish sandwiches are some of the finest food I've eaten. Simple, super fresh and created lovingly. The staff all appear proud of their work and are kind. It's a big café with plenty of space for family and friends to get together. It has a crafty, kiwiana vibe and is cozy. When it's sunny there is a fantastic array of cars and bikes for kids to play on and a big lawn to stretch out on. I'm a massive fan.

Never disappoints in regards good fast service and hearty food (especially the seafood chowder). I take out of town friends and family there before catching their flights out.

The only things going for this cafe are it's quaint setting, the amazingly patient wait staff and the fact that it's terribly kid friendly(dangerously so). They have a reasonable sized patch dedicated to drift trikes/bikes/scooters and all manner of wheeled choas. They also have a springfree tramp. The only trouble is that this kids area is in the middle of the place(parents get ringside seats to watch other parents...interesting... parenting skills) and where the wait staff have to either circumnavigate the works or run the gauntlet of young children hyped up on soda, juice, cocktail sausages and chocolate fish armed with the aforementioned kit. Meals look good/read well on the menu but fail to deliver in real life in both size and quality, especially when considering the not insubstantial premium you are paying. Staff were very good and as attentive as they could be considering the crowd on the stunning day we visited. Meal wait times were okay considering demand. But we won't be going back for a while, not till they've had a chance to improve. 1. First aid box in plain site to cater for the many bumps and scrapes. ICE, DETOL, SPRAY ON BANDAID. (put a donation box on top of it to fund it and it'll prolly make enough to fund a defib machine over time) 2. The rock numbers are quaint(cute) and wont blow away but a nightmare for staff on a busy day as they get lost on the tables amid the glasses and plates. 3. Make sure the food quality matches the description and is big enough that you don't leave hungry after paying >$80 for lunch for 2 and a kid with 4 drinks. 4. Clean and restock the loos a bit more often, ....kids.... esp boys ... nuf said.

I don't really get the hype? Perhaps I had over inflated expectations...? While I enjoyed myself and the service/food/coffee were all Okay... I wouldn't rush back, and wouldn't suggest Chocolate Fish as a "Must Visit" Wellington Location. Equally, if friends had plans to Lunch here - I wouldn't refuse to go back.

Nice place to take the kids, there's bikes and stuff for them to play on, if you like chocolate fish, they practically serve it with everything. Not too shabby.

This is a must do in Wellington. Such a hip place with just great food. Heaps for the kids to do and in an amazing location. Well worth the look.
