Reviews of Smith the Grocer Cafe
D.
Beautiful food in the cabinet and from kitchen, elegant atmosphere, and well presented. Ive had kedgeree, frittata, signature ginger slice, and wonderful salads.
Dont let it disappear...This cafe deserves your support during these pandemic times!
J.
Here for afternoon tea. Plenty of sweet treats. Raw silky snickers bar, was to die for. This was on another level for taste and texture. I should have had another. Instead lemon meringue pie, was good, just not enough lemon. Order at counter then its bought to you. Cabinet food looked very tempting.
L.
Love this Cafe. A must do whenever in Wellington. Lovely food, great coffee, friendly staff. Big thumbs up 👍
D.
Its always busy here ! Coffee and desserts were great, and you sit inside this old bank which makes the experience a little bit more unique than other cafes.
M.
Love the coffee and cheese scones. Housed in one of the old but elegant building in Wellington, Smith the Grocer is well known for its food and coffee
E.
Went here for breakfast and lunch on Tuesday and Today during my Wellington trip. Loved the chai latte, Smith's Vege Breakfast and Housemade Fish. Will definitely be back when I am in Wellington next time!
T.
Hi out there for those who have not gone to Smith the Grocer Cafe
GO you are missing out on great food
I just have had the Mighty Salad,
Mocha, & choc/banana loaf
Its all the best 👍 Yum Yum
So be a chum and go see eat n have fun
a.
Coffee average, delicious food for reasonable price. I'm a gorgoues old arcade location. Fits in nicely with the vibe.
S.
Awesome variety of healthy and naughty sweet treats. Generous and plump cakes, slices, scrolls and scones which were fresh and looked homemade. I bought a small collection for my colleagues and we enjoyed them all. The raw chocolate dream cake and moist carrot cake were standouts.
H.
Always busy on weekdays as well as weekends. Limited seating. Service quality varies depending on the day. If not busy, service is okay. If busy and you are unlucky, poor service. Freshly made food and desserts. Coffee is average. A bit overpriced but understandable given its central location. Service could be improved. Overall a good place for coffee stop.
S.
If you want fast, fresh, incredibly delicious brunch served with a smile - look no further. Great atmosphere in the Old Bank. Can't believe how quick our food came. We were so impressed.
L.
Walked past the Old Bank Arcade and chanced upon this cafe. Decided to have breakfast here and my Oat porridge ($14) was a tad different from what I expected. Think they left out some toppings. It is not dairy free, so beware (had dairy milk on the side).
Loved the turmeric latte though, and the range of pastries and raw desserts.
M.
Good coffee and lovely cheese scones. Love that this café os in one of the oldest building in Wellington. Can't wait to have the borders open again to see tourists here. Used be busier than it is now
J.
Great cafe in the Old Bank Arcade, well managed and good food and coffee, interesting venue with seating on 2 levels and a glass roof 3 stories up in what I think would have been an open area when it was the bank and complete with a glass walled elevator covering 4 levels of the old building.
A.
Quaint cafe with old world ambiance. You could grab a magazine while munching on their delicious food. I was lucky to get a table at lunch hour. Had Indian lentil wrap which was quite filling. The tomato chutney was amazing. Nothing was heavily spiced.
J.
The food was very nice and their award winning black pudding was great. But I am not sure.i would call the big breakfast "big". Service was a bit slow.for the day it was, but overall it was a nice place to eat and bring the baby. As you could sit outside in the atrium, giving you more space for buggies and to bring a baby without interrupting others
S.
Full menu and cabinet. Great quality, ready food, prepared and presented with care
L.
Ordered the Smiths big breakfast and this is what it looks like after it was recooked. The first time the sausages were not cooked properly and initially they were going to just provide new sausages but then said they would recook the whole time dish.
Plus I'm not entirely sure what the sausages were made from but they were quite mushy as if they were vegetarian.
That is good customer service but what annoyed me is the fact they don't take Paywave and then charge 2.5% extra for credit cards. I think this is a very unfriendly customer service policy.
J.
Today my daughter and I enjoyed a delicious lunch at Smith the Grocer. Their wonderful flavoursome food never fails to deliver and the lovely Mary, who owns & hosts the cafe, is always a charming presence! Thank you all for a great dining experience.
E.
Wow, loved the beautiful architecture, and the French toast was amazing also! And to imagine this used to be a bank!
N.
A cool vibe. Feels like you are in an outdoor courtyard (but you're not). Had an excellent coffee!
M.
Wellingtonians are spoilt rotten with the various cafes about the place.
I was in town for the first of my jabs, and the innoculating nurse provided the recommendation. Perhaps Smith the Grocer is her local, or at least one of them.
I can still recall the richness in flavour of the ginger slice, and i had a flat white to wash everything down. Moi supplied my neighbour with a slice of something, but i can't remember exactly what is was. She is, however, in a good mood, so the morsel was obviously enjoyable. Well done!
D.
It was OK some staff not wearing masks... Food was good coffee was better.
グ.
My favourite Cafe in Wellington! Absolutely love the coffee, and the interior architecture is a Victorian design (Rare for New Zealand) and with the lift next to the cafe, it has a bit of a Harry Potter vibe!
P.
Always have a really good experience there. Staff are wonderfully friendly a polite 10/10 would recommend
L.
Went here specifically for their porridge that the no longer have on the menu. Really nice substitute date and apple scone for $6. Coffee not great for $5.70 regular. Had to dump it and go buy another from Pravda around the corner. Lesson learnt :-(
D.
Good coffee nice place to stay dry and people watch. Brunch was good.
G.
Always a treat. Delicious coffee and baking. Nice atmosphere.
H.
Great food and lovely staff...sits within a piece of Wellington history!
K.
Cute little cafe if you go to the downstairs part of it, yum food - ordered the chia porridge and avo & pea smash, both were very yum.
J.
Always a good experience coming here - quick on the coffee making, good tea selection and a range of yum cakes etc to choose from.
H.
Good cafe should have its own theme by collection and personality, there is the one.
M.
Good coffee. Lovely banana and chocolate loaf. Yum!!
S.
Always love going. Historical feel, yummy food.
L.
Probably the most expensive cafe In wellington, If you're looking for good food and money is burning a hole in your pocket then go to Smith the Grocer where you can pay $6 for a Brownie, the have very nice food but it's no nicer than you could make at home for cents if you new what you're doing. In short if you want expensive but good food Smith the Grocer cafe might be a good idea.
G.
Good vibes, nice food, great coffee. Visit here every-time I come to Wellington. Friendly staff btw!
J.
This cafe is very aesthetic. It has a great atmosphere and the food is pretty good. I would recommend this hidden gem!
A.
Smith the Grocer has somehow become my girlfriend and I's Saturday post gym treat (counter productive, I know).
Easily one of the tastiest breakfasts in Wellington which is apparent from the fact it is often quite busy here at all times of the day, but regardless of that, there is pretty much always seating available.
Prices are also very good considering it's great location and the Eggs Benedict is to die for!
M.
Fabulous coffee and the date and apple scone gets 100% 😁
S.
Very nice old spot, double choc brownie was very good
A.
One of my favourite spots in the CBD central district of Wellington. They always have a great daily menu. The halloumi and beet salad is not to be missed. Friendly service and amazing coffee.
K.
Great food and staff !!!
L.
Great location, cozy nook downstairs to spend a more private time. Coffee and food are good with attentive staff.
L.
Food was nice coffee good. Reasonably pricey.
n.
Nice place. Great food... busy at lunchtime... average service.
M.
Great tasting food - the apple and date scone was delicious, whilst the French toast with berry compote, banana and maple syrup was fantastic.
Pretty reasonable coffee and not unreasonable prices considering the quality of the food in a lovely location.
Friendly service as well.
A.
The perfect breakfast and great coffee in this lovely restored building
R.
Best Ginger slice in town ! (Along with other fantastic contenders I was too full to try!)
S.
Very busy cafe in Old Bank Arcade but we thought prices were abit on the expensive side. Lovely decor and certainly a cafe worth going to
J.
long queue for lunch to obtain lunch time food. Service good , counter food adequate.
J.
Great food and coffee, only that it was too busy and spaces around the tables were very tight, so probably worth visiting when it's not peak hours unless you are there for coffee to go. The location is quite nice too!
H.
Great menu good service.
L.
High quality fresh food. The cheese scones were to die for.
I.
The coffee and food here is very nice, served by friendly and efficient staff in reasonable time. This café has been a good place for quick business meetings.
A.
Loved the hostesses' Irish. And would be sacrilege to not mention she remembers each order without writing any of it down. Very hospitable.
D.
A nice cafe with traditional cafe food variety. Warm breakfast and lunch options. I like the place as you always get good quality.
M.
Great coffee and outstanding Ginger slice. Oddly lacking in crocodiles.
P.
It looked delicious, the Lunch menu did sound great. Sadly the kitchen was closed on both occasions at 2pm really?
No signs, wrong opening hours on Google. Mr Smith wake up to the internet age and please have clear signs on when the kitchen is closed so we do not wait for nothing in your otherwise delightful place.
Finally made it imao that is the first 6 stars in new Zealand I chanced upon in that price range if you choose Well. We had the baked eggplant with cashew nuts and cheese fillings with a tasty tomato sauce. Just superb. The iced coffee was best in years, the desert lemon pavlova and raw strawberry cheese cake just delicious. Visiting back tomorrow.
T.
Central and airy place for catching up with friends or a quick cuppa. Lots of food choices throughout the day and lots of seating for up to a few people. Reasonable choice of cakes which the carrot cake looks like a tower of sweetness.

This has become one of my favourite / go-to cafés in Wellington. Well located over Lambton Quay inside The Old Bank Arcade. It can be easily spotted on the roadside from a moving vehicle in normal traffic.
Easily approachable. Well managed, organised and nicely maintained.
Spacious and comfortable seating.
Excellent ambiance. There is seating available in front of the cafe and for quieter environment, one may avail indoor seating.
They serve great coffee with awesome presentation. Plentiful food options for those looking for edibles although choice for vegans and vegetarians is quite limited.
Well timed, efficient and cordial service. The staff is pleasant and cheerful.
Table service. Offers takeaways.
Normally busy during peak hours.
Good for quick visits.
Reservations can be made in advance.
PayWave facility is available at this location.
Good for groups, celebrations, family, kids and catch-ups. Popular with travellers.
Could not notice wheelchair accessible seating or high chair in plain view at this location.
There is no dedicated parking area although ample street parking can be found around.
Entrance is wheelchair accessible.
Always enjoyed the experience.

Nice cafe located inside a big building.
Easily accessible from Lambton Quay.
Well maintained and beautiful ambiance.
Pleasant staff and fast service.
Good seating arrangement.
One of the best Chai Latte I ever had in Wellington.
Many good eating options. Their apple date scone are quite popular.
Normally busy during morning.
G.
Great coffee and one of the best scones I've had in a while.
B.
Great coffee and very nice breakfast from extensive menu.
C.
Enjoy visiting this Cafe. Located in a nice spot. Good service and nice food selection.
M.
worth going just for the surroundings - the old bank arcade is gorgeous. Good food range and great place for breakfast.
A.
Great food, great staff
M.
Find good coffee and great service here. As for the surrounds it is priceless! It is not everyday that a cafe can boast of a tall, lift tower within its walls complete with a working lift. This explains the high skylight-roof. How quaint and quirky!
Apart from this SGC is also a great place to bring your tourist-friends for coffee or more as it oozes with character and a charm of its own. If you run out of seats within the cafe you can spread out onto the corridor or head down SGC's stairs for more seating options. You'll find old-fashioned peace and quiet at SGC as this is not the usual haunt of teeny boppers.
M.
Fresh interesting and tasty food
M.
Really nice atmosphere, good food and coffee, friendly staff. This is on my lunch time short list. Highly recommended.
A.
Always a busy cafe, in a lovely spot in the Old Bank Arcade. Great coffee and tasty food.
s.
Great place for coffee, meal , light lunch, meetings. Great coffee and food but long wait. Occasionally you are at risk of serving by a grumpy staff, most other staff after nice and friendly but VERY busy.

Nice ambience, though at lunch the queues for food and drinks are ridiculous, a is seating pressure. I'm a frequent visitor, so obviously am not put off, but more efficient service could easily put this up a couple of stars.

It was a shame almost everything savoury had onion in it or they couldn't be sure either way. However, the cheese scone was very nice despite not being what I really wanted for lunch.
M.
Lovely cafe. Cozy downstairs area like a small library. Coffee and food both good.
A.
Lovely atmosphere. Great choice of food and really helpful staff. Indoor/outdoor seating. Although the outdoor is in an enclosed corridor.

(Translated) I received turmeric latte, tea and Raw Lemon Slice, Roasted Vege muffin. Slice seemed to be vegan, but it was very refreshing and had good pistachios. The muffins were said to be gluten-free, but the fluffy baked pumpkin was delicious. Wifi also asked the clerk to tell me the password.
