Reviews of Bushy Park Sanctuary
H.
Absolute paradise. So many native species flourishing and the community efforts to protect this incredible forest are amazing. Highly recommend. One of my favourite places I've ever visited, and the staff are really helpful too.
A.
Lovely place but if there is a criticism it would be the walks could be better sign posts with distances and if it is a dead end walk. Handy if you have someone who is not for or has a disability. May by car park is hard to go by.
P.
We are very blessed to have such a sanctuary for native birds so close to Whanganui. Topped off by the rich history of the homestead & its surrounds.
M.
Incredible, highly recommend. Must see for bird lovers! Great plaques along the tracks and so many native birds and trees
R.
We loved staying here. Like stepping back in time, quiet slow paced life. Birds and forest was enchanting.
J.
Brilliant place to see some native NZ birds, especially the friendly robins. The homestead is also great for a cup of tea afterwards.
D.
Wonderful gem just outside Wanganui. The reserve was abundant with bird life. The most Saddleback and Hihi I have seen. A number of easy short bush walks with some large wonderful trees. Stayed over at the Lodge. Such a credit to Dale and his staff. The lodge is looking fantastic and our room was lovely with breakfast included. Fabulous evening dinner prepared by Dale. Will definitely return. A serene and relaxing stay.
g.
A great bush bird life experience. The park over carpark isn't level and no chance of getting level for a camper van.
S.
Wonderful bush sanctuary. Great birdlife. Easy walking track's. Well maintained by volunteers. A great place to visit.
G.
Simply wonderful...we stayed 1 night...it was quiet comfortable and relaxing... thanking you 👍😊
D.
Unbelievable... this is the best I've been to in NZ. So well done and so many bird and plant species. My heart is full.
D.
This historic place listed home in the middle of a bird sanctuary is one of the most perfect places in New Zealand. It captures old world charm, modern comfort and perfect hosting to provide visitors with an experience they treasure. Early morning bird watching, excellent food and the feeling of welcome will bring you back again.
I.
Loved this place. Never been so close to so many Saddleback's before. The Homestead was wonderful, as was the Devonshire Tea.
S.
Fantastic place for birds and forest. Wow, what would NZ be like if more land had been left in its original state.
D.
Love bushy park! They do an excellent job of upkeep and there are always so many birds. A beautiful escape for anyone.
M.
Great place for some time out, reconnecting with nature. the walks are great and allow you to experience the great bird life that we have (a fantail followed us for half of the walk !)
A.
Easy walks - no one here and free entry - highly recommended if you have a spare hour or two
E.
This is a stunning area. Peaceful and close to nature. Served light refreshments by very friendly helpful staff.
R.
Minor thing...needed reading light in the bedroom near bed on both sides..
L.
A real asset with lots of bird life and so peaceful
J.
Fantastic park with several short walks you can easily combine to trek through the whole park. Trails were well graded, I’d say mostly flat but few spots with stairs. Favorite part was being serenaded by all the birds during our walk!
Had cream tea at the homestead, great deal at $12pp, and then spent an hour walking the four tracks near the house.
Nice facilities and small museum as well.
i.
Beautiful bush, and astonishingly prolific birdlife. The forest was never quiet.
B.
It's a great place to have fresh air and know more about plants. Went there for a school trip but would love to go again as it is very beautiful
T.
I love busy park. Such great rare birds, astounding old mansion. The highlights for me where the old generator room (to power the house in the day) and the EPIC massive trees you can walk up to on some of the walks. Those trees are what is missing from our bush (they are truly massive, every child should see what a proper mature tree actually looks like to understand how tragic a lot of our existing bush is).
T.
Absolutely 💯 beautiful.
I recommend highly enough, korero by knowledge and passionate staff.
A wonderful learning experience for children and their parents.
Thank u to st Anne's school for extending the invitation.
B.
The hospitality at Bushy Park homestead as amazing. The owner is a fabulous host. We really enjoyed our coffee, cake and chat. Kindly accommodated 9 of us for afternoon tea with no booking. Will definitely be back. Highly recommend a visit.
S.
Lovely peaceful setting amongst trees and birds, beautiful period furnishings, nice walks, historical information centre, plenty to choose from in the …
J.
All good, go prepared for shared bathrooms, but with a handbasin in your bedroom..
A.
We thoroughly enjoyed the bird sanctuary and loved watching rare stitchbirds feeding .
The accommodation was the icing on the cake .spotless, Comfortable . Just learning the history of the homestead worth the visit.
Dale a superb host .
B.
Fabulous surroundings, and a choice of well maintained bush walks that are provided with the constant background of native bird song by these residents of bushy park.
We spotted kereru, fantail, tui, stitch bird, and saddleback, during our walk.
Beautiful.
P.
Great spot for a bush walk with the kids with a fun, interactive education centre too. Would love to stay in the historical homestead sometime.
J.
Impressive property. Well laid out walks and native birds to listen to and observe. Historical aspects in a small museum free of charge. Campervans welcome to overnight, not sure of the fee. Not a POP. NZMCA. Walks are not too long.
A.
The sanctuary is for the birds 😆 A beautiful quiet and tranquil place. A ground level fenced perimeter keeps all the vermin out and the birds can make this place a home. They can fly away at any time, plenty of shade and plenty of food in the Wetlands streams and pools. The added history is an added bonus 😁 donations are appreciated.
A must see, and a cup of tea.
S.
We stayed one night and was a unique experience, felt like staying at Downton Abbey in 1920, I totally recommend it for a night. Staff was extremely nice and friendly and the food was delicious, felt like staying in a home. Wifi works on the common area but not in the bedrooms. It has shared bathrooms, we were the only guests that night so we didn’t mind. Not the typical hotel but super happy we stayed there, it was an extremely lovely experience. The walks on the sanctuary are short and you can see lots of local birds, perfect for kids.
M.
A beautifully restored, comfortable and well serviced Homestead with easy access to the Sanctuary with a spectacular lowland forest and wonderful native bird life..
D.
There are no en-suites in the rooms, however the bathrooms are close to all of the rooms and dressing gowns are provided..
S.
I liked the quaintness and character of the building and the beautifully decorated and comfy bed. But the best part was the grounds, with all the native bush and birds. It is a wonderful, peaceful haven..
P.
This place is absolutely beautiful. The service is high quality and the host and family lovely people. This is the perfect place to go if you are needing a romantic break or just want to get away from it all. With primordial forest and abundant bird life it's an educational trip as well. I learned heaps. I highly recommend Bushy Park.
A.
A beautiful place to visit. I can't believe I haven't been here before.
It's great to be able to wander through the lovely old homestead and read about the history of the property.
The walks through the bush were nice with a lot of birdsong.
D.
Loved it. Under new management for the last seven months. My wife and I, and the three other Australian guests were treated like royalty. All of the bookings for Valentine's day were casual and last minute. Clean, quiet and peaceful, surrounded by predator fence and some ancient NZ forest where native birds can thrive. The house takes you back to late 1800's, early 1900's in it decor. The house is part of the Historic Places Trust and forest area is managed by Forest and Bird. We suspect we'll have to book months in advance to stay next time we're in the area once the word is out.
K.
Amaxing sanctuary full of birds. Several free walks available, possibility to volunteer if wanted and a cute nice visitor center explaining the native flora and fauna. Worth a visit and leaving a contribution to help the cause!
R.
Absolutely gorgeous. Fantastic walks in the bush with lovely native birds, followed by an unrushed wander around a beautiful home. We also had a delicious Devonshire tea, served on classic china. So glad we drove though from Palmerston North, as it was well worth the visit.
C.
A great place to enjoy local nature with peace and serenity.
M.
Amazing tracks heaps of native birds an the volunteers who give there time to walk around the track explained everything with passion I had a great experience
T.
Absolutely brilliant nz native bush park now entirely predator free. Bird life and bird song like I've never experienced before. Magnificent Rata trees in full summertime flower.
L.
Stayed in the homestead and had a pretty good walk around the sanctuary. The bird life is really filling out nicely. Saw Bellbirds, stitchbirds, robbins, lots of saddlebacks and wood pigeons. Kiwi have been re-homed elsewhere sadly but was impressed by the work done since I was last there.
D.
Wonderful, never seen so many saddleback birds. Beautiful NZ forest, wonderful to walk through even on a cold winter's day. The hospitality at the homestead was amazing too. A devonshire tea was just what was needed after the walk through the sanctuary.
A.
Fantastic experience. Beautiful bush with loads of native birds. The homestead is a lovely building and you can stay the night.
j.
Amazing bush walks, native bush and birds
L.
Such a well maintained and looked after Sanctuary
Well worth the visit 👍
R.
Several very pleasant bush walks available, the bird life is pretty impressive. Also found the various 'exhibits' interesting + informative.
L.
Tracks are in excellent order. Birds were plentiful and we were delighted to see hihi feeding. Tui, kereru, north island robin, nz falcon were also easy to see and hear.
m.
Beautiful setting, lovely environment, peaceful and excellent host. Recommend for anyone to visit this icon place. Be visiting more often.
R.
Fabulous location and Dale is a great host and cook. A must visit to Bushy Park even if unable to stay over.
A.
Very beautiful and tranquil place. Easily walked most of the park in 90 minutes, not stressing. Amazing how they've managed to gather that diverse bird life. The long walk goes partly through a cow pasture which feels a bit out of place.
K.
Our group of 20 Visited for a Devonshire afternoon tea but thoroughly enjoyed the additional tour and history of the house that the new host gave us. Exquisite linen, silver service and China porcelain crockery too. The greenery has grown since our last visit. A beautiful peaceful sanctuary.
A.
This is a lovely reserve with some amazing trees.
P.
Although the site offers B&B we only had tea and scones there. All was delightful, the people, the home made scones, and last but not least the beautiful protected park and stunning vintage Villa. The park has been rid of all the pests and in just a few minutes of walk we could see several beautiful native birds. While there make sure you also walk to the ratanui tree, a beautiful ancient tree that majestically rise to the sky.
J.
I have visited many Bird Sanctuary's throughout Aotearoa, & this by far would be my favourite. The clear, well maintained tracks, the abundance of rare endemic species, the tranquility of the place, as well as the peace it offers away from any major crowds. Capture my very first images of Tieke, Hihi, & North Island Robin. I am already planning a return trip with my family.
L.
Bushy Park is an excellent sanctuary. We'll protected from preditors. There are lots of different nature walks. The highlights are definitely all the birds. So many rare native birds lots getting very close.
J.
One of our favourite places to visit since we first discovered it back in 1974. Back then we were mainly Forest & Bird members who stayed and cooked meals in the communal kitchen. Since then it has evolved and become more widely known but still retains its peaceful character along with improved bush walks and enhanced birdlife.
M.
Wonderful place to see large numbers of tieke, NZ robin and kereru as well as hihi We also stayed the night in the homestead so got to go into the bush early to hear the dawn chorus and were lucky enough to see two ruru before they went to bed.
E.
An amazing experience off the beaten track. A beautiful old homestead with a number of rooms available from around $150 which is fantastic value. They have an amazing nature reserve with a full predator proof fence and extensive walking tracks. Definitely would go again.
S.
Wonderful sanctuary for NZ native birds. Gorgeous to just stop and listen to the birdsong and silence.
N.
Great friendly staff. Bird sanctuary. Turned right and ended up here. Did not stay long. It is free entry. Koha accepted. I had no cash at all on me so I am a lil disappointed I was not able to leave a donation. I did enjoy the walks. Easy walks to do.
L.
Great place to see native birds
D.
My kids can learn a lesson how to protect the forest from here. Lot of love for who had spent their life to build the park.
G.
Bushy Park is like the Wellington "Zealandia" but then with B&B, a unique combination. We came to rest and recharge our batteries. You facilitated that admirably. Your hospitality and friendliness was fantastic so that we very much enjoyed staying with you. We liked the meals that you provided, which was especially appreciated since "local restaurants" are not exactly nearby. We also found the beds very comfortable and the facilities more than adequate for the type of B&B that you provide. Time should be taken to appreciate the history of the homestead, but more time should be spent on exploring the Sanctuary and its many rare birds. Travellers should also visit the nearby "Nuts 'n May" to buy walnuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts and macadamia.
S.
What a fantastic place! If you love NZ birdlife and being out in native forest this sanctuary offers both in a peaceful setting. Within seconds of being in the forest we were met by a friendly North Island robin and saw saddlebacks darting across the path in front of us! The majestic Ratanui is worth visiting alone - considered to be the largest Northern Rata in NZ. Entry to the tracks is free and if you’re hungry, the homestead offers Devonshire tea and light lunch options at a reasonable price. This sanctuary is definitely visiting!
D.
We went for the walks only, and didn't stay at the house. The walks themselves are well-maintained, and most can be covered off in a couple of hours. Good information supplied on the trees we were seeing, and the birds weren't afraid of us. The giant rata well worth seeing.
A.
Wonderful bushwalk surrounded by the sweet trills of native birds.
I.
Bushy Park Sanctuary is a wonderful step back into what New Zealand might have been like before Europeans started colonizing. The park has been made invasive predator free so that native birds plants can thrive. Walking down the forest trails takes you into a first that is hard to find elsewhere and a riot of birdsong that is impossible to find outside of a small number of carefully protected places. This park is a must see if you're in the Whanganui area.
A.
Fabulous walks for the whole whanau all for the price of a koha to support the Bushy Park Trust in its preservation and educational services. Safe, within easy access to Whanganui, it's a must for the summer months.
J.
Great bush, only took a small stroll with elderly parents and were thrilled to come across kauri trees and bird life. Hadn't seen a fantail for years. Disappointed couldn't visit the homestead as it was under restoration.
P.
The sanctuary is amazing with incredible bird life. The homestead is worth a visit and staying there a great experience. The service was awesome.
M.
Bird life is fantastic, especially great to see so many Saddleback be so friendly, must visit for Whanganui!
K.
Different walks to choose from. Lots of birds to see
S.
Don't waste your time with the cafe as others have pointed out. They seem to only open if they feel like it. More like a private residence even though it has wide open doors and tables out. Only visit for the Bush walk and dont plan on any refreshments being available.
C.
Great hospitality from host Dale. Local walks were an option but weather was not helpful.
D.
Not En suite but not expected in this old home.
T.
What a cute little get away. Great free activity to walk in the forest and around the pond etc. Nice and relaxing.
J.
A great place to visit. Lots of bird song and bird sightings, and fungi.
A.
Absolutely stunning scenery. Though it was a hot day the canopy provide complete shade from the sun and an amazing cooling effect. I would definitely visit again!
P.
Absolutely stunning scenery, forests and birds. Best to go in the morning when the birds are awake and singing
B.
