James is an excellent instructor. He is kind, responsive, has a great sense of humour. His teaching style helps to quickly learn how to drive and overcome fears. If I hadn’t taken practice lessons with James I wouldn’t have passed the test for the first try. Highly recommend!

James is the reason I passed my overseas license conversion test today. After failing my first test I googled a driving coach in Whanganui and found James. I was so lucky to find him. He taught me to calm down and to drive safely. I acquired some different driving habits partly due to different traffic rules and road conditions overseas. James did not only teach me the right way to drive safely, he repeated the situation several times to reinforce the right way so it can become a new habit. He also helped me to analyse the reason why I drove that way, so once the mindset was changed I would not make same mistakes in future. Two hour lessons are very efficient. My first lesson with James was only two weeks ago. Now my driving skills and confidence improved a lot, and today I passed the conversion test. James is the best driving instructor, I would highly recommend him for anyone going to sit for the overseas license conversion test.

James is an amazing driving instructor. He is extremely knowledgable and patient, and is also very fun to talk to which makes the lessons extremely enjoyable. James is a fantastic driving instructor! 4 months ago, despite having had my learners since 2017, I'd never spent more than 60 seconds behind the wheel of a car without having some sort of anxiety attack. Last week, I passed my restricted test on the first go! James is incredibly knowledgeable, he knows the road code inside and out, and his dual control car is great for building up confidence behind the wheel with minimal pressure. Using a great sense of humour, he consistently creates a reassuring and supportive environment that takes a lot of the pressure and anxiety out of learning to drive. He is genuinely invested in your success from the first lesson till the last, and I honestly could not recommend him enough. For anyone who is nervous about learning to drive or needs help improving their road confidence, James is absolutely the instructor for you!

I'm 28yo, have had my learners for 11+yrs, and I was terrified to sit this test and that's why I put it off for so long... I've had bad past experience with other driving instructors, but James was recommended to me by a friend and I'm soooo glad he was! James never made me feel bad for making mistakes, and this helped me to learn from them to progress. Excel Driver Training is very good, and James is an excellent instructor. His 2 hour lessons are the best way to learn how to drive, as by the end of the 2 hour lesson you have managed to learn so many driving skills which prepare you to sit your restricted license test. James is a very good driving instructor and would highly recommend him for any learner driver who wants to learn to drive properly, as the skills he teaches you sets you up for success in the restricted test and also gives you key skills that you will use every time you drive. Best driving instructor I have ever had and would recommend to anyone. The 2 hour lessons are a very good idea and help to create mental stamina. Very professional also.

James has helped me alot to drive properly and prepare for my restricted license test. After few lessons with James, I passed my restricted test at first time! THANK YOU SO MUCH James:) Before I meet James I took 4 lessons with another two instructors...but it was wasting my money and time... James helped me get up to test standard in order to gain my Full license (through an overseas conversion) in only a few weeks. He wastes no time in helping you build experience by identifying what you need to work on and finds routes that will enable you to improve those specifics - whilst also making lessons enjoyable and stress free. He sticks with you from the day of the first lesson till the day you pass the test, and best of all his 'voice activation' becomes the default 'driving voice' in your head so he's still teaching you even when practicing alone 👍🏻

James was a very good instructor and helps you to become a better driver while also teaching you the technique needed to pass any driving test, restricted and/or full. James knows when you are ready to pass your test and will also tell you if you need more lessons. The 2-hour lesson that James provided is a blessing as a 1 hour can good quicky. Highly recommended. Great driver instructor (James), makes you feel comfortable tackling tasks for the first time, if you are new. Also helping you go through the test routes, so you feel more peace at mind when it comes to the day of the test. Not only does he teaches you how to pass the test, but also long-term skills for when you pass your test. He was always punctual. Thanks to him, I managed to pass my restricted with ease.

I came to James after having a horrible experience trying to pass my restricted driving test. After 6 months I went for my first lesson with James, and right away I clicked with him. James has this way of talking to you, and teacing you in a way that it just can't help but stay in your head. We discussed my "hesitation monster", my techniques, how to get out of a bad parralell park if I ever did one. One of my favourites was at lights he would say "and the point of no return is... nooooowwww". This helped me know when to go and when not to if the lights where to turn orange. He taught me a lot of things about my own car that I hadn't been told before. He answered a lot of questions that I wasn't sure of, that caused me a bit of stress leading up to the test. I really liked that he said "let me tell you how many lessons you will need." And the very feew that we had was exactly what I needed. I appreciated his honesty with how he thought I might go on the test. As it turned out his prediction was right. In short, James built my confidence up from zero, and the first time I sat the test with him in the back was when I passed my test. Mum said "It made me feel at ease when he approached. He had a nice manner. I really like how he checked my daughter's license, and he checked the car making sure it was all legal." Thank you James. You have no idea how much this has helped me. I used this service for lessons for both my restricted and full license tests, both of which I passed with flying colours on my first attempt. The instructor clearly knew not only the road code and how to spot and fix bad habits, he also knew the routes the testing officers would use. If there was another driving qualification I needed I would happily use Excel again and I'm confident it was their instruction that ensured I passed my tests.
