Reviews of Riverbank Market
A.
Very nice open market. Unlike New Lynn one in Auckland, it is clean. Unlike the Farmers (so-called) "market" in Riccarton a Christchurch, it is an actual market (the Riccarton one is just a fancy food court). The food looks plenty and good quality. They have good price as well. The location next to the river itself makes it a good spot for stopping by the river if you want to entratain kids. Easily highly recommended.
A.
A lot of vegies and a nice outdoor environment. If you have free time and it's sunny, it's a nice place to go. Be sure to get there early
B.
Fantastic market, especially now they have sorted parking. Great range of fresh produce at good prices. Lovely to buy something to eat and sit on the riverbank on a sunny day. Wish they had greater range of hot food though, lots of roti but not much else (shout out to the Chinese stall with the amazing dumplings).
L.
Great selection of seasonal fruit and veges. Also plenty of food trucks and stalls selling eggs, honey and microgreens. Bought some delicious bread from a stall too. Easy to park.
M.
Great place to get what you need. Lots of unique Asian foods/vegetables. Good prices. Food trucks are 90% roti. Could do with more choices.
H.

Great flow of car and foot traffic the stalls are really well set up with second hand goods down one end and hot food down the other. All the stall holders are very friendly and helpful and have great products.
C.
A great vibrant market with beautiful vegetables and local produce from pastries and bread to microgreens. Linger for delicious hot food and drinks. Love it every week.
D.
The biggest fresh produce market in Wellington. Good price but check for quality of offers.
Many veggies and fruit stalls and some hot food as well as plants and other stalls.
A.
Cheap and quality food products in Lower Hutt. Makes every Saturday a fabulous one!!
H.
Really good place to do shopping! Fresh vegetables and fruits are our favorite! The price is really low and everytime we would come home with almost two boxes of fresh goods. Besides, the market also has cheese providers and honey suppliers, which are local and of good quality. Come here when we are free on Saturdays :)
N.
Great for fresh veggies and fruit, and free range eggs. Love all the food trucks too. My favourite Saturday morning routine.
L.
Great for fresh fruit and veg shopping. Lots of food trucks and various stalls selling gifts and foods.
N.
Great place for fresh veg purchasing on a Saturday morning. Try to reach early to get your hand on the freshest stock. Food counters for quick breakfast available, however, have mostly Indian options.
S.
Very good place to buy fresh vegetables.
D.
Amazing fruits, vegetables and other with outstanding quality and good price (you need to look everything to find the best)
M.
There's some quality stuff at the market.
Spent $29. Got way more than expected.
Definitely will keep returning.
Z.
Street foods are amazing there. Wide ranges of fresh vege shopping. Eftpos not quite accepted by most vendors.
V.
Best part of living in lower hutt. The market offers fresh veggies, fruits and other comodities. Most vendors accept eftpos. Good outing for the entire family on a Saturday. The products are fresh sans much cheaper than in any super Market.
F.
Good priced veges, relaxed atmosphere. Bit of busking talent there sometimes. Food trucks don't seem to be as numerous as before.
C.
Great produce and selection, great atmosphere. Great way to spend a Saturday morning. Brunch/lunch options as well as an excellent picnic spot are right there too!,??,?*
M.
I love the lower hutt riverbank market. The veggies are fresh and at great prices. I can get well priced tofu. There are a few hot foods places as well now
N.
Have been here a few times when visiting Wellington and its always a fun time looking and buying fresh produce as well as some great food found dotted around the market. There is plenty of parking when you arrive early but can get busy during the school holidays especially over Christmas.
R.
We went for an early morning snack and a coffee. Plenty of different stalls with yummy food to choose from. Great choice of fresh veggies, great bread and cheeses on display in the main market section. We will go again!
B.
Lively craft and vege market very reasonably priced. Tons of street and off street parking. Fantastic mix of lovely people and cultures with hot and cold fresh delicious food and drinks. Great way to spend a few hours browsing on a Saturday
T.
Generally pretty good prices, though we did have one stall try to include weight of basket into the price of purchase. They have reordered the layout and it's much better to work your way around.
G.
An excellent food market with a good selection of vegetables, fresh fruit, bread, fish and mobile cooked food. Best to go earlier on Saturday morning to beat the 1000 to 1130 rush. Been shopping here for 8 years
P.
A great food market on the weekends. You need to get in early as parking is an adventure in itself. There are some craft stalls too and second hand goods but these are pretty hot and miss. There are food trucks of all kinds and are with trying. Just wish the car park was powered so there is less nose from generators, or had over head sun shelters like in Melbourne as you can get sun burnt here within 10 minutes.
S.
It is not just a shopping place, this is where you can get your green bargains, explore global cusine, watch people from all walks of life while sipping a great coffee from a coffee track (vegan options are available). My favorite Saturday treat is a cheese roti, hot and melting, made in front of your eyes. It's not just veges abs fruits - three are stalls with meditarrenean - mainly Egyptian - treats, macarons of all possible flavours, fresh fish, French bakery, and trick track treasures.
B.
Excellent market with lot of shops to buy your veggies and food trucks
T.
Fantastic Saturday market. Huge selection of fruit and vegetables from different stalls. Plus lots of different delicious foods trucks including kebabs, hot dogs, roti wraps etc. There is fish, meats, breads, second hand goods, buskers and people trying to sell religion.
P.
If the weather behaves itself this is a great place to buy fresh fruit, vegetables, plus various hot foods from different cultures.
D.
A great Saturday morning market for fresh seasonal vegetables & fruit. Very similar to Harbourside Market (Sunday) in Wellington with many of the growers working both locations. Love the little Asian lady that sells beautiful spray free herbs out of the back of her red van every week.
I.
Saturday farmers' market is great for local produce. Reusable grocery bags and cash is ideal. Morning is when the best selection can be found. Parking is limited. Alternative transportation is advantageous.
P.
This is an amazing place, but best to go early, as it can get crowded later on. A huge variety of fruits, vegetables at very good prices, plus a wide range of other goods and produce!!
B.
The most amazing market of fresh produce I have ever seen!!!. Those big Chinese turnips and carrots are lovely, never seen them that BIG before. Always find coriander at the market
L.
Great selection of fresh produce. Arrive early as it gets very busy with lots of people.
L.
The market is a good place for getting low cost fruit and vegetables but the council has made it really hard to park by changing the whole parking configuration. This both makes it hard to park and has reduced the number of parking places. They really need to reconsider their strategy.
L.
Fresh veggies and fruits
B.
One of the best market around Wellignton region for fresh vegetables and fruits.
D.
I arrived early at the popup covid testing site and felt welcome and at ease the whole time.
j.
Only on Saturdays this Market runs at the Riverbank - Lower Hutt. Very worth waiting for than buying at your normal everyday paknsave or countdown supermarket etc. Here you get the most fresh produce, cheap prices and excellent sales reps. Parking is free and there is hot food stalls as well as entertainment. Keep up the good work people. .😊
Z.
Weekend farmers market, freshest produces. Very reasonable priced, happy place. It opens only every Saturday from 7am to noon.
M.
The Saturday Produce Market is an indispensable resource especially to those on lower incomes as produce are generally cheaper (and fresher) than in the supermarkets.
However prices have crept up, no doubt due to the market's increasing popularity as food prices continue to SOAR (aggravated by the GST even on ESSENTIAL food items; so much for "no / low" inflation. Compare the cheaper food prices of other OECD and non-OECD countries!). Sometimes a few items eg. avocados, may even be priced higher so it pays to pre-check the supermarkets before you shop here.
Note also that HCC is now charging $2 if you park within the market grounds before 2 pm!! No doubt this will not be the last HCC grab. In the meantime (and before the next round of food inflation) take the opportunity to feed your families with greater variety, freshness and affordability from this market that opens on most Saturdays until 2 pm.
It's not uncommon to see folks foraging among the vege-dumps or floor for free, over-ripe, partially-rotten food that has been thrown out or sold as "bargain boxes". A waste-not, want-not mindset is not a bad thing especially given the fact that we are in the midst of a catastrophic, unsustainable and unconscionable, food and resource wastage globally.
A thrifty attitude at the market may lead to who knows where? "Little can be huge"... but it seems that it's the COST of food that is driving such behaviour which is also becoming more prevalent these days. The best way to stop food poverty (and also children going hungry) is to remove the GST from food or at least from ESSENTIAL FOODS (like some countries do).
NZ produces so much meat and dairy yet they are some of the most expensive foods on sale, with fruit and veges following in hot pursuit eg. check out the cost of the once-upon-a-time humble kumara.
[ Note that this high cost (and margin / profit) of food is NOT going to the pockets of our farmers and primary food producers (who bear ALL the risks in exchange for only small profits), on the contrary... ]
H.
a great little place for buying fresh locally produced goods. We usually go for fresh veges, eggs, milk and occasionally sea food.
E.
A huge market from fresh fruit and veggies to home baking of delicious cakes and an breads.
Amazing array of Bush honeys collected by Beekeepers, "Downunder Honey" and "Natures Honey Pot" from the Manawatu and Taranaki native bush.
Choice veggie plants for smaller gardens and planter boxes that continue to grow well in your garden and provide fresh produce that you can be proud that you grow yourself.
Cooked foods from amazing cultures and garage sale brick a bracket.
Something for everyone. A great market on a good weather day with plenty of car parks.
N.
Always an enjoyable experience on Saturday mornings. Gotta watch some of those tellers though, have had to correct the pricing multiple times at various stalls.
A.
Great selection of fresh produce. The market is really well run.
P.
It's great for veges, eggs and sometimes treats (like fresh bread). More affordable and better quality options than the supermarket.
Z.
Saturday Market is there to purchase from fresh vegetables, foods, 2nd hand items, plants, eggs, and more. It has a huge selection of items and large car parks available.
J.
Love the fact plastic free an option for milk bread eggs and vege-fruit. Chaiwala man kai is simply the best.
Can we get some gluten free bread options please???
A.
Great market with a large selection of fruit and vegetables for sale. Also some trinkets and various dvds and games. Great cheese stall and a fresh sour dough bread stall also.
P.
Great variety of fruit and vegetables as well as food and 2nd hand stuff, jewelry etc.
Take cash, as not all the stalls have EFT available.
Every Saturday
M.
Well-priced vegetable stands, excellent coffee options and plenty of food trucks. We appreciate the vegan dumplings and vegetarian roti wraps.

Fresh cheap veges and fruit, and a sprinkling of artisan food suppliers. So good that you are unlikely to get a nearby carpark.

This used to be worth 5 stars, but they've rejigged the parking recently and now it seems hemmed in and crowded. The stalls are great- the overall experience now not.
T.
Council must put traffic controllers to the pedestrians crossing near the countdown. That makes more value for your parking fee
C.
Great selection of fruit and veg. Busy place on Market Day.

Huge amount of top quality produce for a much lower price than at the supermarket. Loved the range of produce, as well as interesting good and trinket stalls. Would recommend a bag/trolley on wheels for anyone doing their primary fruit/veg shopping - my backpack and reusable bags got quite heavy quite quickly. Also do take cash! I found that the on-street parking was free, so getting there at 9:30am wasn't an issue. So glad a friend recommended this! Will be back weekly 😊
