Reviews of Matakana Village Farmers Market

A lovely market in the small area Matakana. I would say all the products here in the market are all high qualities. It includes handmade pieces, food, art pieces, seafood, live music, wine and honey etc.
Every Saturday 8am to 2pm. Worth visiting.
J.
Beautiful place and scenery. Markets on Saturday food is yummy but the price are dear and once a month we will drive up there 1 hour 45 minutes there just to buy the farmer's honey and other produce. Some of the food are very special and unique for our tastes and we like the oyster very fresh and good value for money.
J.
Though there's not particularly many farmers to really merit the name farmer's market, this is a delightful morning out. There's plenty to eat and see and the location is a delight (tucked in between intriguing local shops and a charming river). There's even a playground, tame goldfish and wild eels to spot if you need to keep small children entertained.
A.
Market was so busy but at the same time happening too. Dogs are not allowed so they have dogs sitting care area. Market is located at water streams which is very relaxing.
T.
Fun wandering around but not really what I'd call a farmers market. Some fruit and a mushroom stand but no tables of produce like other markets. Yes there's bread, cheese, chocolates and cider etc but I would've liked some multicoloured tomatoes, fresh salad greens, eggplant, cucumbers etc
N.
Matakana Markets is a great place to check out. Although like most markets it pays to go early so that you 1. Can find decent parking and 2. You don't get stuck in traffic on the way there. The Markets itself is awesome if you want to try out a lot of the local foods or looking for handcrafted items such as chopping boards, clothing etc.
When I can get up there I go for the honey. There is a stall there where this very knowledgeable gentleman sells some of the yummiest honey I have tasted and it is very reasonably priced.
So check it out.

I've been to this place quite a few times. It's always fascinating and somewhat crowded . Varieties of stalls on a relatively small section. A stream flowing at the back, with resident ducks sometimes visiting the market scouring for food.
My favorite is the BAP bacon and runny egg stall at the corner by the buskers stage. A must try if you are visiting and love bacon.
E.
Too small and nothing special to be frank. Not quite sure what makes it popular... Produce etc are fine but there's nothing you couldn't find at any other market.
If you want a "farmers' market experience" the ponsonby one is much better
N.
Never fails to surprise always great with homely environment. Great vendors who don't mind talking about their goods. No pushy salespeople. Great way to spend a lazy Saturday morning.
N.
Loved the setting in which the markets would normally be when on. Although the stores were open, the markets weren't unfortunately because it was not market day. I have heard so much about them and now seeing the setting, it has made me want to return because I believe they are amazing.
Looking forward to returning some day soon for sure!
M.
Great place for an outing for brekkie! Lots of different stalls are in place with exertional food or products. A nice setting too, the stalls are a nice rustic look. If you go here, don't forget to see the eels in the stream, really amazing!
C.
Nice market to visit, lots of lovely food.
C.
The 1st impression was disappointing, as the woman at the entrance advised no dogs, there was however a charity dog sitting service. But there was no way the young girls would've been able to handle our two Rotties plus all the other yappy, aggressive little fluffy ankle-biters. Luckily not far was a bacon butty shop and a cafe next door. In the end my wife went inside on her own and bought a lovely dip to go with with some flat breads. And after that we went to the next farmers market along, and they had no issues with dogs. There was a lovely deli meat stall, which we had to try.
N.
Great place! Good vibe
C.
Food is amazing; I love the experience. The oysters were delicious, but I definitely prefer them fresh in the shell.
G.
Interesting products on sale, music at every corner got on my nerves . Prices were on the high side for a farmer's market and not many vegetables or fruit on offer. Great atmosphere though.
A.
Beautiful vibrant vibe here. The best market I’ve been so far. Beautiful with cherry blossoms and stream behind. Friendly locals. Fresh produce ❤️So magical. Would love to go every week.
N.
A really cool place to hang out and spend your morning. Great food, fish burgers, smoothies, some sweets and Russian fudge. Nice music and buskers. And they have dog sitters who always have tonnes of dogs to pet. Right next to the river with really good scenery and nature. All the produce is local and delicious.
D.
Great assortment of stalls and food. Great atmosphere. Only downside is trying to find any parking.
j.
It is a nice natural walk and peaceful park. A big car park makes easy for visitors. There is public toilet by the car park, I give 5 star for this FREE nice park. ( the museum is required entry fee)
U.
The best farmer market I've ever been so far! Drove all the way from Auckland CBD and was worth it. Fresh fruit, bakeries and plenty options for other meals. They even have cafes and eateries around. The last time I came here, most of the stalls only accept cash.
L.
The market is nice, with a decent variety of food stalls in a scenic location. However everything is really overpriced, 6 small dumplings were $16. Parking is also hard to find, and a lot of items are sold out after the 1st hour.
O.
First time come here, a well known farmers market outside of Auckland, decent food and drink
D.
Great fun today at the market! I love the flowers and the atmosphere was very lovely. Nice and friends local vendors!
A.
Desperately needing bigger and more organized car parking area.
Backlog traffic leading up to the roundabout was unbelievable at 2pm.
Biggest farmers market so far, a lot of vendors, during summer holidays, it’s basically people moving in crowds in the mid level market area, very crowded. Perhaps arriving at 8am is a good strategy.
F.
Coming to the market is always what I look forward to the most when coming to Matakana!
It is always busy with great food and live music no matter the time of year and weather.
We usually try to get to the market around 8am to avoid the crowd and get a park in the local car park. Parking and produce is limited from about 9am.
J.
Only stopped for short time & brought salami, but looks like a great local market popular with the locals.
K.
A great market if you want to go eat for breakfast or lunch, but not much else to buy, was looking for fresh produce but realised it is not actually a farmers market and appeared to be alot smaller from when I was last there 6 or so years ago.
P.
One of the best pedicures I have ever had. Thank you Jamie.
I.
It's nice, but nothing you can't find in Auckland markets. I wouldn't make the trip from the city just for the market, however, as part of a day trip out of the city, to Snell's Beach or a vineyard it's nice to stop in for a snack.
J.
While it's ways busy and many places sell out if you get there later - this market is awesome and pretty unique. It's easy to stay a long time with everything there is to see and the entertainment.
Dog sitting is an excellent entrepreneurial add on as dogs are not allowed in the market.
Great location and always fun
It's also a treat to find the eels!
J.
Too busy and doesn't flow well so when people queuing you cant get by but the crepes were amazing and so was the young guy serving!!!
N.
It's not for everyone, but all in all it was an experience.
Not pram friendly which means leave them in the car.(the prams not the kids 😂)
A little pricey but enjoyable.
A good drive out there too.
Only thing is to go early so you get a decent park.
S.
Nice. Small but has plenty of interest for foodies. But don't expect to your weekly shopping, it's not that kind of market.
F.
A lot of crowd but still had a nice bap there for brunch. Plus a cup of smoothie and a banana waffle. Pleasant little market to spend our Saturday morning with friends
h.
The best weekly market in Auckland.
The most amazing live music and so many beautiful foods, drink and produce. My favorite option here is the "The Laughing Heart" seafood stall. The claim to have the best mussel fritters in New Zealand and I have to agree. Also a very delicious option is their prawn tacos (Pictured)
I will be visiting again very soon.
A.
Nice to pop out if Auckland. Had some good food. Take cash - not all stalls have EFTPOS. Arrived early. Glad we did because the traffic going north as we were travelling back at mid day was unbelievable.
A.
We really enjoyed our time in the farmer’s market. It’s great choosing from really fresh produce. Lots of things to eat as well in the food street.
B.
Great vibe, busy! Cool, interesting stalls. Decent food and drink.
A.
Wonderful, vibrant market. Definitely worth a look and take time to enjoy the music and riverside eating
R.
Lots of things to see and buy
Lots of yummy kai
Live music
Check out the eels that live in the creek that runs alongside the market
S.
Such an awesome market to explore and every time I try something new. Great vendors and service.
J.
It is an ok market. Nice to stop over. Have something tasty for breakfast and a coffee fix.
Do not expect to find any bargain. Everything is set in a way to look delicious so you van forgive the price tag.
The playground is nice and gives you some time to enjoy your coffee
P.
such a beautiful town. very lovely place to chill out.
S.
A nice and vibrant market, well known to all Aucklanders. Fresh vegetables and breads. I even bought some Bamboo shoots here. Amazing. Nice shoes store as well. Had made some crazy shopping. Haha
B.
Very crowded Easter Saturday as you would expect. Parking like hens teeth, but well worth the visit.
Y.
Lovely market place with cheap yummy food ❤️❤️❤️
H.
Lovely market. They had hotdog, bacon, pies stall there. You couldn’t bring your dogs in, but there was a dog sitting service. Market was not that big, but quite nice. Some shops was selling organic egg, groceries, and manuka honey. Some of them had eftpos machine, some of them not. Don’t forget to bring some cash when you come here.
R.
Great weekend outing with family and kid's
L.
Such a great market. Stoked with the food and products available. Both knick knacks and fresh produce!
B.
Located the next driveway down from the farmers market, the Matakana Market sells mostly random market fares like teacups, possum socks, and metal signs. There were also a few food stalls there selling homemade items and fruits. It is, however, an outdoor market so there is little to no cover. There is the cream of Matakana Building in the back which also houses a few stalls.
Nice market if you like to hunt for unique and special items.
M.
Lovely location and great for food. The stalls selling item are okay.
K.
Our regular road trip destination from Auckland. Great ambience.
A.
Best place in Auckland to be bright and early on a Saturday! Fresh fruits and veges, market go-ers, pups, singers, sunshine and yummy food! From crepes to hotdogs, white bait omelette to pies and your choice of baked goodies and dips!
N.
Lovely place to shop.
Found a little hand made leather pouch that was just what I needed.
L.
Love Katakana farmer market. Not far from Auckland good for a short trip.
J.
Lovely food, especially the whitebait fritters, and many interesting stalls and lots of local produce.
U.
A gorgeous boutique market with a mix of everything. Can get the real taste of kiwi life. Loved it...
D.
Very busy and always crowded. But lives up to the hype.
L.
There are so many options, we went there on Saturday and it was amazing, we loved the look of it and it was like a normal market but better! It was way more fun and you can get more out of it than going to the supermarket, you get to try new things that you might not had have before.
p.
I travelled all the way from Auckland city and it was totally worth it. The veggies are super fresh , the person selling these beautiful orchids was very knowledgeable and helpful.
J.
Come early as it gets crowded fast. And come hungry because the food is amazing. I'd express a favorite but I can't because it all good. Just start with coffee and work your way through.
J.
Best markets. Plus it's my original home Village. Fantastic river side walks too. So my birthday niece and I went for a discovery walk to find out. And we found peace and tranquility
M.
Matakana market has become a victim of it's own success. Difficult parking, crowded, stalls changing from week to another. like the great pizza kits stall now you see it now you don't. Shame. What happened to the cheese stall last week? Bacon butties are great, bookshop outstanding choice and the best psychedelic toilets outside of Brick Bay winery.. Live music is a treat with takeaway coffee/crepe etc. Get there early Jafa's!
N.
One of my favourites. Yummy food and produce and a nest vibe
M.
Friendly atmosphere. Good food products.
B.
Nice location next to river. 8 wired brewery bar just down the road. I'm not really a market sort of guy but if I'm hungry there is usually something nice to be had.
N.
Ok variety of goods on sale. Didn't see anything that appealed but nice wonder around
V.
Every Saturday market here with live music. Many delicious fresh products locally grown and made. Nice to just sit and soak up the surroundings too.
N.
Live band at the market. Great atmosphere. Some shops provide eftpos, some not. Recommended to carry cash. You can find different varieties of home made food and drinks.
R.
Matakana Farmer's market has good variety of food, thrift stores and local produce
A.
This is amazing place. Love the crowd and love the vendors. The wine, organic veggies, cider, sandwiches... just tried all those I possibly can.
Only thing is, parking is not that great, but that's because a lot of people come to the place. Will definitely come back.
d.
The farmers market is gaining in popularity and as a consequence is busy. Its always been a good place for fruit and veg, great dipping olive oil, cheese, meat seafood, it's just short of food paradise. Excellent place for breakfast/brunch and then onward to a local beach.
G.
Always a nice destination. The market has grown nicely since I last visited a while back with a nice variety on offer - nice craft and market stuff. The village and surrounding shops are also expanding so more to see there too.
H.
Great place to visit, real farmers from local. but the selection of goods are very limited and expensive.
P.
Expensive and pretentious - but we still bring visitors here to show them a side of Auckland.
Lots of food stalls, but best to avoid those that are making fritters or bbqing.
K.
Not too bad, plenty of variety, seen better.
A.
Great market, great food, had a fabulous salmon bagel from the Happy Heart stall and some lovely Matakana botanical products, fresh veges and fruit, overall an enjoyable morning. Tip: get there early or the traffic will drive you crazy
G.
Heaps of fabulous stalls, perfect chocolate shop. Spent heaps there.
S.
Wow was a great spot. The food area was vibrant and full of energy with people everywhere, friendly stall holders offering delicious delicacies, and serenading music from the jazz band. Looking forward to visiting again.
J.
Absolutely love Matakana farmers market, they have some amazing stuff! They even have cafes and eateries, so its a good day out, you can just walk around the market.
Last time we went, luckily we got some fresh fruits and bakery items as it sells out pretty quickly. It's quite a drive from Auckland tho, lots of traffic/road works etc. But the market itself is pretty good, worth the time and drive! Would definitely go again some weekend!!
G.
Awesome market with plenty of variety. Best Crepes ever. Italian sausage of note. Vegetarian dumplings are a winner!
A.
Lovely quaint town- market has a super vibe. Mainly food for sale.A little pricey especially for a market. Traffic getting there was particularly slow so plan to leave early. Plentiful parking.
L.
Arrived early so as to get close parking. Some very good vegetables for sale. Quite a number of stalls. Plenty of food etc. Good quality.
B.
Great wee markets. Small but good foodie spot
T.
Don't be late. Food options were selling out quickly and with good reason. Yum and yum. Kids playground was awesome for the littlens too.
A.
This place was a treat. Heaps of small shops selling quality items. There are stalls where u can try lots of samples. Its always busy so finding a parking will be hard. Dogs are not allowed inside so if you are travelling with your dogs, there is a dog sitting service available right at the entrance. Its a good place to grab something to eat as well. Must if you are passing by Matakana. Open every Saturdays
M.
A very relaxed environment, fresh food with such variety. A must to go, to on a Saturday morning, sample delicious food listening to great music on the edge of the small creek.
A.
Loved it - a great variety of beautiful products, live music, the river nearby! Excellent Saturday morning activity (the only downside was that the roads were very crowded).
윤.
It is grate place for shopping on Saturday
L.
Fantastic range of produce and food in a quaint market which screams character and local charm. Prices are a little on the high side by the quality is there to match it. Food is always great as well! Especially like the feijoa wine and oysters there
N.
Great Vibe and Many food Options
G.
Always an interesting place to visit. Love the dog minders set up to look after your dog while you enjoy the market. The dogs love it too. You've got to be fairly early though before the food sells out.
R.
Great place, great vibe, great produce...olive oils, nut butters, za'atar, spices, dressings, salts, chocolates, teas, roasted nuts. Chill musicians, wonderful organic vegetables, winner whitebait fritters, mussel fritters, breads and pastries, artisan sausage hotdogs, great coffee, kombuchas, kefirs, fresh juices!
C.
Very busy and buzzing. Love that you have doggie minders, thought it was a dog show at first. What Fun!!! The ultimate highlight has to be the whitebait, best ever!
m.
Excellent, clean,peaceful and kids friendly!
M.
Unfortunately we had already eaten when we got to the market so did not get to enjoy any of the food which looked amazing eg oysters, crepes, breads. The market is well laid out with lots of local produce and although it was busy it didn’t feel cramped. There was live music and the doggy waiting area was super cute. Well worth a visit.
H.
Great place. So much to look at and lovely food to try. The stall holders are very friendly too
M.
Such a great vibe if you're looking for a short day trip away from the chaos of the city. It's right along a river and it usually has a musician or two. Some really great food options!
T.
Great products. The matakana oysters according to my wife are the best and strawberries in season are awesome. I could go on but you need to see for yourself.
R.
Fun. Lots of interesting independent stalls.
E.
Awesome place. Great selection of foods and coffee.
S.
Food was good. Bizarre rules around dogs for an outside venue. Not overly keen to leave my dogs with a stranger. Cool place, though didn't get to fully look around, due to not being aloud all the way in. Looked cool from the outside though!
H.
Music is always nice, a great selection of hearty, soulful products and produce and inspiration. It's fashionable, it's trendy, the live music always really sets the atmosphere and its a nice drive whichever way you come to the markets. The only downside is it can get overcrowded and the traffic can be slow at peak times.
M.
Great Jazz band playing on Saturday. Loved their music. Lots of people. Nice atmosphere. Great variety of stalls.
D.
Probably the most well known farmers market out side of Auckland... great place for a get away for the day... lovely organic foods and drinks... also a dog sitters service there to look after your fur baby’s... Or just to pats some random dogs.
C.
I enjoyed my be visit, but very crowded. Could have had more vendors not sure if it was smaller then normal due to Covid19. Lots of artisan food products, pretty pricey. Parked on street but nearly a km away. Glad I checked it out.
G.
There's something for everyone... though most things are sold at a premium its a good market for people just exploring and having fun.
S.
A good place to relax even if you don’t have things to buy. The traffic to the market is always congested though.
j.
Was a really nice atmosphere, however we arrived just before one and everything was wither out of stock or packing up. Next time we will make sure to get their earlier.
J.
Dog sitting service available at this cute market - quite a number of eftpos machines but cash will be best.
A.
The recently changed hands Mexican stall, was a very fresh and pleasant discovery. The new owners are very focused on providing delicious fresh food with a smile. Try the pineapple drink, perfect with the 'food with attitude'.
T.
Great place to go on a Saturday morning for coffee, brunch and some fresh locally grown food.
G.
So awesome loved the product and the feel
P.
Great place to stop for lunch, and watch the eels in the stream
S.
What a brilliant spot for breakfast! It definitely pays to head over early because it is very popular and gets very busy. The stall operators are passionate and enthusiastic about their products and the quality is outstanding. This spot also makes an excellent lunch stop when kayaking or boating up the river.
s.
crazy busy labour weekend !
Dog sitting service is great
A.
The place is pretty cool but the goldfish in the pond are diseased, covered with whitespot. The water needs to be treated with antibiotics for them to get better.
R.
We visited this place during Easter. A great place to visit with family and friends. Lots of cafes and shops. Limited parking during major events. Highly recommended.
M.
Really cool market, I really enjoyed it, definitely worth the drive up from Auckland. I expect it will be much bigger in the warmer months.
B.
We went for coffee and to hang out. It was perfect for that. There’s an option to take a river cruise out to Sandspit from this location.
T.
Great place to go for the day!
A.
Artisan produce, nice vibe, great cafes and best bakery north of Warkworth. Drive further north in the direction of Point Wells to Charlie's Ice cream place for the most heavenly gelatas in the whole of NZ. Shout yourself a double scoop, no a triple one and watch the goldfish while you slurp your cone...
B.
Smallish but great produce, esp the fresh bread, and omw, the olive tapanade! Good vibe. Early is best as very popular, parking availability can get further away the later you go. The micro greens look unassuming but are excellent. The stall with unique gemstone rings always fascinate me. And the scroll-up-able bag from the matakana bag lady (yup i had not intended to buy so much stuff... so neede a bag...) has not dissappointed, has lasted me a few years an still looks new :) go for it :) have fun, have a bite of something good
A.
Yummy food options and also market food and veg to take away. Can be REALLY busy so get there early. Coffee place inside the market is a long wait but there’s other options just outside the market. Good used book stall too. Lovely setting by the stream.
R.
The market is so beautiful and the people are so friendly.it was our first time and we loved all the fresh foods the market had.
S.
It’s a really good market as far as the farmers markets I’ve been to go. Just a bit cramped and crowded is the downside. A lot of places had run out of food before the 1pm closing time too. Pays to get there early. Plenty of samples to try of various spreads, chutneys, cheeses, even gin.
J.
Fantastic market every Saturday, the organic food and amazing vegetables, the Capsicum so sweet I could eat it straight. The locally brewed coffee is great, the Vietnamese steamed buns are the best I have EVER tried and the rice rolls and sauces so tasty. There are so many incredible choices of yummy food. The icing after mussell or white bait fritter, is going home with an amazing bunch of roses which last for ever, and the selection is absolutely fabulous, the roses look fake but they are definitely real. The service is great the people friendly. Toilets are available though upstairs. The parking can be very busy on a sunny Saturday but there are disabled parking areas close to the markets, and it's chair friendly.
W.
A great trip out and lots of fresh produce on offer. Has a good ambience and a bustling chilled out crowd. Great for veggies, free range eggs and some great breakfast options too. The only downside can be the traffic from Auckland. Recommend getting there early.
M.
We love going up here for Saturday brunch. The kids get their pocket money and off they go to buy local food and lollies.
They love the dog minding Station which is where I usually find them.
We have tried most of the food including alcohol and coffee, everything is great. I do love the French pastries.
It's lovely to sit down by the water and if your game feed the eels or give them a pat. They are so friendly.
There is a lovely little book store and local chocolate shop.
L.
Amazing place! But Daaamn crowded and very very expensive. Make sure you make your money worth and don't buy things just because they look like locally grown.
Also be sure to take cash with you because most of the stands don't take cards.
Matakana roasters serve you great coffee! Be sure to check out the honey stands at the price is worth it. Otherwise expect olive oil 250ml for 20$, spices for 11$, simple crepes for 14$ etc.
Otherwise nice craft, candles, dresses.. Etc.
Parking might be an issue so try to come before 9am.
D.
Nice clean place. Friendly staff at the pub. Well worth a pop in.
R.
Loved it so much that we re scheduled our trip to make sure we could drop in a second time. So cute and friendly and lots of yummy food. Great location as well. Children loved the little stream!
S.
A wonderful place.
I've been coming here for years and have always enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere, great local produts and diverse food options. The entire region is a hub for gourmet food products and delicious produce and visiting this market/village is a beautiful way of experiencing the best that the region has to offer.
It's great both on a sunny and on a rainy day (there's even a cinema there for those who may want to hide from the rain, but ideally try to avoid visiting it during the busiest summer weekends as it may be a bit hard to find a spot to park your car.
M.
The market itself wasn't open ( only on Saturday morning) but little shops and cafes worth a short visit. Nothing is cheap, although an Op shop round the corner. Beautiful paintings in gallery there. Some stylish, but expensive clothes shops. Pretty river bank. Scary eels in water though!!
M.
A Small local market! Too many traffic on Sat!
V.
Just stunning , fantastic setting - plenty of parking. Such an amazing range of market fare.
M.
Great family morning out overall.
Several similar stores and expensive food.
M.
There were no farmers being marketed at all!? The bacon company is excellent a d worth a visit.
j.
There's so much to do at this place, food, gifts, local produce, antique items, lovely local band to entertain and amazing location
J.
Great food selection & atmosphere. Enjoying my Puriri Downs Free Range Eggs! There is even a dog minding set up. Nice surrounding shops at Matakana also. A good place to visit for a day out.
B.
Gorgeous little markets with a great variety of stalls. Open from eight till one so great to go for breakfast or lunch - there are sweet or savoury options, waffles, crepes, baps, savouries, pies, seafood, etc. Also great for buying gifts with a great variety - wines, honey, candles and other little gift packs.
J.
A great holiday vibe with everything open.
J.
Not Cheap but the food here is awesome!
$10 - sustainable White Bait Fritters
$15 - Fried Dumplings
$? - Banana Choc Crepe
Coffee
Are some of my favourites.
I do not live in Matakana, but we travel there out of our way for the food.
C.
A great market and great atmosphere. The live music was great too. Make sure you get there early as it can be quite hard finding a car park.
R.
I loved the local market with different foods and homemade products. The smell in the air is amazing!!! A very good option for a family weekend.
L.
So many fabulous things. OM bread, oat milk, organic seedlings and the Harry's organics are my go toos.
S.
A great morning market for families and their dogs - really succulent oysters, fresh warm bread and fresh macadamia nuts are some of the best things in the market. A great summer activity but could be a bit pricey after spending a little here and there.
盛.
Great lace to be. Good position, lovely shopping complex next to market. Beautiful river and bank nearby. Food and drinks are varied and original enough. Price isn't cheap. Good live music there. Highly recommended for a day trip.
S.
We went on a rainy, stormy day, still good amount of market stalls open selling lots of artisan products
I.
Overpriced, overcrowded and over-hyped place. I'm not sure if it worth 50 min drive off Auckland at 8am Saturday morning to buy expensive food. I'd better take a trip to Farro.
M.
Nice but over hyped. Small market. Really expensive and the traffic in and out during summer is absolutely awful. Like 3ish hours back to Auckland if you get the traffic
J.
Amazing. If I lived closer I'd go every weekend. Such an awesome place and a huge variety of things to try and buy
C.
Signature Dumplings at Market. Superb ... beautifully presented and handmade tastineess. High price so 4 stars rather than 5 but still a must try if you are there
A.
Quite small and has become more a tourist market than a true Farmer's Market. Something to do if you are wanting a day out
S.
Nice little farmers market. A good way to spend the day - food, entertainment and local produce. Recommend the white bait fritters. Parking next to market is usually full but plenty of free parking available at walking distance.
S.
I love this place. You can find delicious food, art, crafts while enjoy the cute town.
R.
Great spot to stop. Rustic market out back of the carpark. Good coffee. Markets in the morning. Village Cinema and Restaurant complex adjacent. Great feel to the tiny township.
s.
Fantastic market. Lots of gluten free cakes that taste nice, fresh local fruit and honey. Great setting by a little river.
J.
Awesome fishing spot, catch 3m flatties and easy 2.5m long fins one after the other. Also recommend trying out uncle hone's fried bread.
C.
Great little market ..beautiful eggs n spuds , I managed to pick up an old school coffee grinder , food stalls are yummy .
M.
Great vibe on a Saturday. Not to be missed if you are visiting the area but get there early! Locals tend to avoid the village on a Saturday morning because it draws a lot of people from Auckland.
Local, fresh, organic produce in the main market area. Clothing and other products in the upper market. A good range of cafes and restaurants around the central location.
C.
Pretty much my favourite of all markets,, great vibe, environment, fresh food and produce, and a glance into local creations
M.
So many different stalls of all sorts of different yummy foods and drinks to try. Fresh organic produce and products. Lots of handmade products by local people. There is always live music. Just a really good place to go and have some fun.
N.
Fun little morning activity, it's worth the 1 hour drive from Auckland. Go with an empty stomach because once you get there you'll be tempted by what is on offer. Produce is fresh and locally made goods are amazing, great place to stock up the pantry with some fancier things.
S.
Love the stalls...great variety of food on offer, great local produce, and people..
A.
One of the best markets I've been to in NZ. Lots of local food and alcohol options.
A.
Awesome atmosphere, great produce, crafts and quirky things. Yummy food.
R.
The markets are good, unless its raining. You may have to park a ways away, but there is always parking. There is an ATM and toilets nearby, but you may need to wait. It is mostly food. But if you go to another section, you will get tools and jewellery. But it isn't so obvious. From memory it is the other side of the church.
I.
The actual market is small and...expensive. Not a lot of bargain and variety. However, it is a cozy little town with a pretty river and a lot of the regular ships are open on the day. Perfect for a Sunday visit and brunch. Worth a visit
L.
Lovely place, lovely pub with live music 🎶 gouges figs trees in full fruits (some are ready for picking lol 😀)and most importantly spotless
M.
It's nice but always very crowded. There are better markets around.
J.
The food is interesting, often fresh or homemade. A nice setting next to the river and other boutique shops in the village square. Also another two markets in Matakana worth checking out when you're done there.
M.
A top 5 market for NZ and a must-visit if you're in the area on a Saturday. We got a lot of tasty food and even enjoyed a live band. Great if you're visiting as you can buy extra food for dinner too!
J.
Always lots of good food & local produce at this very popular market. Combine your trip with a visit to the arty cinema next door, or the river cruise. You may have to park down the road & walk back due to numbers though.
G.
It was a rainy day when I was there. Therefore, the market was not fully operational. It is still good. Fresh produces from farmers, nice hot food, great honey. I think it is a must go if you are up north for the right time.
K.
Lots of nice food to choose from. A good coffee. Live music. We visited on Labour weekend Saturday. The place was bustling with people.
R.
Must visit!! Happens every Saturday and if you're visiting the Matakana area it's an essential stop for a yummy lunch and local homemade food, drink, clothing and crafts. It's vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and dairy free friendly and is a great place to look for fun and original gifts.
D.
I would give it 3 stars, except this seems like quite a nice market for NZ. The location is very idyllic and definitely worth 4.5 stars. But if you're actually going to the 'market' like in Europe, you will not get your range here. However, if you want a good location and do something, grab a coffee, this place is certainly cute and makes a good 'going-out' on sat mornings! Depends on your point of reference, but most average markets overseas in Europe have much better range, and the prices are quite steep in Matakana - although it is NZ, so that's quite normal.
C.
Make sure you visit to enjoy amazing food and products as well as local produce. Greta for coeliacs with lots of gluten free offerings and cross contamination awareness
V.
Nice small getaway with a few nice restaurants and icecream.
C.
Great little farmers market! ❤ fresh local produce, always something new and interestung everytime I go. Don't forget to check out the specialty shops around the market too!
Make sure you go early though, parking can be a pain!
L.
Great food & atmosphere
P.
Nice trip out of Auckland. Pleasant hour or two. But small and not very different to visit again.
R.
Go early as it can get very busy and hard to find a park close. Awesome markets, very popular and good little trip away from the big smoke
A.
Nice and cozy place, lots of variety of foods ,busy definitely , country style 😋
A.
Very nice spot with a variety of offerings. Stores and refreshments and activities. A lovely hub.
P.
Lovely fresh produce. Crazy busy though, so if you don't want to be jostled about, get there at 8 and leave long before 10!
M.
Great selection and variety of food. It was a little crowded when we got there, but that just added to the feel of it being a local Sunday market. The atmosphere was fun, vibrant, with live music when we were there.
J.
Cool for a visit (especially the cool antiques and leather which are a total 5 star) but the coffee and bread etc is super expensive and not great. Wouldn't buy again.
S.
I like this market for the craft and second hand section, but the food area down below is really expensive and has become so congested with people that it has lost its charm for me. I live in Takapuna and our market still has reasonably priced produce and for gourmet items it's cheaper to pay a trip to Farros. I wouldn't drive all the way to Matakana for the market nowadays. The only time I visit is when I happen to be driving through because the traffic and parking is also horrendous.
A.
Amazingly well organised intimate little local produce market. All local vendors, faultless quality on offer. Live music most mornings (Saturdays only). Parking was a NIGHTMARE until recently. Personally I go EARLY before all the crowds arrive. Upper markets also good 1 mins walk from main market area. Local retailers also on site, 4 Square, Gull, boutique shops etc. BNZ ATM on site attached to Art Gallery.
C.
Looked like the food was fantastic, but I arrived just in time to see it all sell out. Next time I will go earlier
A.
If the sun is shining and you get here early there aren't many places better than here on a Saturday morning!
J.
I think it's time the ladies in most of the clothes shops were as helpful as the lady in the clothes shop next go the garage!
I.
Love this market! Just an hour from Auckland. Come early to avoid crowd and sold out food. Always enjoy the live music and juice
C.
Great selection of food, drinks and produce. Came here for breakfast and thoroughly enjoyed it. The live music creates a great atmosphere
J.
Always lots f interesting products on display. Food stalls also varied and great
Q.
This is a great place to hang on with family on Saturday morning. A lot of fresh veggies and local products. The view close by is also very good.
A.
Beautiful. Good experience. Could have more restaurants and more parking for Saturday’s. Watch the traffic before coming from Auckland .😁👌👍
F.
Amazing little slice of small town. Great food, nice live music, eclectic collect of stalls
I.
We went by on a Thursday so the market was not open but there was still a nice atmosphere. I'm certain the markets must be great. No dogs allowed.
M.
Nice drive from Akl, nice oysters, good vibes. 4 stars because last visit on winter not as exciting as in summer
A.
Great variety of produce, artisanal food and drinks, and other wares. Beautiful setting and live music too!
B.
Absolutely wonderful. Cheese and pies, preserves and breads, great atmosphere and so central to everything
C.
Excellent. Everyone must visit. 30+ stalls there's something for everyone.
D.
Jam packed with great food, live music, a huge range of fresh and organic produce to eat and try. Fresh oysters, yummy sausages, exotic drinks, ice creams. There is even a make your own knife stall to entertain dad. Area extends over a board walk built over at River that winds around it. Kiss can explore the waterfall around the bridge. There are many large faults in the mudstone. See how many they can find!
A.
Matakana farmers market is a really lively, beautiful place to visit. There are many different stalls that sell food, clothes and other bits and bobs. Definitely a must go.
D.
Full of high quality goodies for foodies. Quirky buildings and friendly atmosphere. They will even puppy sit your pooch whilst you wander the stalls.
n.
Took a week to find a park .
T.
Loved it. Great little market with variety of choices of food and items.
R.
An absolute must if you happen to be in Matakana on a Saturday morning. Lots of gorgeous delight's.
B.
Awesome spot and produce to buy. Just very crowded!
B.
Some of the produces are really good and tasty. But the market itself is very small. And very, very crowded. Hard to find a parking spot. I prefer Parnell's.
M.
Great place for special treat food. Nice selection of tasters. Great morning out when combined with some bargains from the original matakana markets behind the church up the top.
E.
Loved browsing through the market today.
U.
Great food and hospitality but can get crowded in the small space
D.
We went here the day after New Year's on our way to Tawharanui and the place was just bustling with activity. A lot of quaint shops to visit and also, loved what they did with the public restrooms! 🖤
E.
Great to visit and look around. Organic and local produce, food, great coffee and dog sitting available!
N.
Awesome experience meeting where your food comes the very people that produce and grow it
R.
Interesting and lovely small market. Almost everything is there. Don't miss the opportunity to taste the organic ice cream outside the Matakana Village (mini-mall). The coffee shops are great.
H.
Great selection of eatery's, lovely place to wonder around and explore all it has to offer.
R.
Vibrant market with lots of food options.
K.
Great freash produce and buzzing atmosphere. Very good eateries and decent coffee shops. Only negative is that it's so busy parking can be tricky on a weekend .
J.
To crowded, but hey we all love it. They have great food and even raw vegan options. It's a good way to spend to much money. ;)
N.
Great atmosphere with nice stalls, just gets crazy busy. Quality produce, not rubbish
K.
Great place. Try taking cash with you since not all stalls accept EFTPOS.
G.
Great food stalls and artisan deli products, yum 😋 oh and pleasant live music
N.
Arguably the best farmers' market I have been to in the world. Bold statement I know. From the way this place is built, to the good vibes from all vendors to the top notch food this market is a must do.
D.
Very nice town close to Omaha beach
S.
I am sure this market has something for most people. Well worth the drive to walk around and enjoy this little village
E.
Best market north of auckland and possible wider auckland area. It's not giant but is both farmers and artisan market. Has a dog babysitting area that costs a gold coin but this gets split up between the local kids who look after them while you shop.
K.
It's clean and has lots of variety to choose from, mostly they're selling organic products 😀
J.
always good food & service with great staff...thanxs
D.
Very nice food and friendly ambiance. The village itself is well worth a visit. Especially the deli with its fine sausages and crockery. I will go back.
C.
Had a great time when we visited there. Yummy bakery and good coffee.
L.
While it isn't the largest of farmers markets, it has a lovely vibe with live music and beautiful surroundings. Get in early - most of the food sells out by midday!
N.
The market is open on Saturday but not on Sunday. You can find quality food and products there. After all, heading to Omaha beach is my recommendation
C.
Always great when Latakana are playing there. A coffee and some chilled jazz!
A.
Delicious food. Great music with 'White Chapel Jack' doing some great covers. Recommend the olive oil.
T.
Lovely lots of locals and exciting ...need more stalls there and more people bringing more fresh foods and Vegs from their gardens
K.
Great local market for weekends in particular kids
M.
Great stalls, get there early to avoid the crowds...and please leave your dog(s) at home, this ain't the place for your 4 legged friends (we have dogs and they stay at home)
M.
Always good to walk and chat with people there. The only down side is the sometimes excessive prices.
N.
Felt more like a tourist trap than a farmer's market, but be sure to head up the road a bit to the small group of stalls behind the church you'll find a few more interesting options.
P.
Different foods, jewellery, bits and pieces. Nice setting.
C.
Too busy parking a nightmare. Overpriced. Too small a space to accommodate people. People just stand in the same place and don't move frustrating when you want to look.
f.
Lovely little market and worth the day trip from Auckland on a Saturday morning. Pleased to see the muscle fritters back on the menu on one of the foodstalls as I was gutted when the main muscle fritter guy left the market! The star of the show is the Manuka honey salesman. We travel to Matakana for his honey.
M.
This was a fun spot to spend a few hours, I was not impressed by the Mexican food kiosk, but make sure you stop by the Kauri Creek Gardens organic vegetables and get the coriander salad dressing. WORTH.
T.
So cool
S.
Not bad but was hoping for more produce. Not enough seating for the food offerings
S.
Nice local produce, this market needs to stay on longer. Like at least 3pm.
B.
Great vibes, nice cafes and very friendly crowds...highly recommended...
A.
Really nice little market, had some really good fresh food. Was pretty crowded though so parking wasn't easy.
L.
Meh. Nice stall owners though, over crowded, cramped, needs a bigger space.
J.
Great variety and all the people are very welcoming
S.
Worth the drive from Auckland! I Highly recommend organising a day around these markets. So many good beaches to explore
V.
A serene village with a bustling market. A trip to the roots. Expected more stalls but still enjoyed the time there.
J.
Awesome markets. Really enjoyed the choice. Bought awesome comfy pants and the fish burger was really great with a decent piece of grilled fish
A.
Great buzz .... Fabulous energy and the market up the way is neat two ..go to both it's a fun market time
S.
One of the best coffees but very crowded and long lines.
s.
Always a fun time had at the Saturday market. Wonderful fresh produce and crafts. Be prepared for heavy traffic cues especially on public holidays.☹️
K.
Quirky market, bit pricey for some items
R.
Nice people, lots to see, not many vegan or even vegetarian options for food though, and it is a pricey market, however it has great music and locale
Y.
Love this market. Always bring any overseas visitors here. It is a long drive but well worth it as an ocassional treat
R.
Beautiful local market to taste all the local products. Nice vibe and view all over and around the market. Better to arrive early to avoid traffic towards Matakana.
D.
Fantastic but absolutely manic. Maybe run it over 2 days so it's not so crazy busy?
S.
Lovely place to get fresh food as breakfast or lunch, presented from wooden bars. Good for kids. Note that there are two areas.
E.
Great place to visit and interesting range of goodies
D.
Beautiful little town and awesome farmers market next to a small little stream nice outing for a day
D.
Yumm. Enjoyed a bacon and egg butty - Matakana bacon. Delish and a must try. Best arrive early as the market is well attended.
J.
Nice place to visit. Good to support local businesses in the area.
A.
Cool place
E.
Nice Saturday market but Closing a bit early at 1pm. Good choices for food but kind of limited for vegetables. Good to do once in a while
F.
Local produce by local people in a pretty environment. Nice day trip for urbanites to get a taste of the country without being too challenged.
K.
Very busy atmosphere but lots on offer is that's your thing!
D.
Bring your appetite and your wallet. Botique atmosphere, delicious local food, exquisite bespoke art work. Well worth the extra $$.
R.
Good local market with lots of local produce. There's also a section for crafts.
J.
Probably one of the more successful Saturday markets with a good range of deli type foods boutique type shops, bric a brac, gardening and produce stalls, good lunch food and drinks, had a nice coffee and tasty pork bao.
p.
Nice place for a short day trip. Loved the stalls. It was crowded when we were there.
P.
Enjoyed the market today, the mussell and bacon bap is highly recommended, i have one every time....
L.
Was a bit of an anticlimax. Expected a brilliant market, not worth driving from Auckland.
But everyone was very friendly
J.
Same old stuff every weekend. Some great buys and tasty food. A bit too crowded and there's a few bottle neck areas which could be improved.
M.
Fruit, veg and eggs! Lovely little market. Park your dog so you can shop is a great idea!
K.
Good mood and nice food
And big eels
M.
Great spot for an early morning weekend roadtrip. Definitely busy, but worth the effort if you're going to make a day of it.
S.
Perfect buzz and surroundings
D.
Matakana and the market is always a treat and just love the place. Great outing from Auckland with fantastic food and drink in a tranquil environment.
S.
A very relaxed fun place to browse eat or shop has everything a great atmosphere that everybody can enjoy.
A.
Keen to check this out
J.
Would like to see more local arts and crafts, mostly a food market. Lovely fresh local produce
A.
Fairly hard to describe and worth a visit. Farmer style markets selling basically food of all kinds, hot /cold etc, wine, breads, flowers, cheeses, oysters, you name it. Parking CAN be a problem if you go late when half of Ak is there. Big open car park now by the Primary School which is such a bonus. Several shops around the shopping complex, art galleries, naturopath, books, women's shoes, clothing, movie theatre with 3 theaters, local butcher, 4 Square, Blk Dog Cafe, designer women's clothing down the footpath, bakeries etc.
M.
Eco friendly, kids friendly, pet friendly. Bring your own bag! But if you forgot your bag, you can still buy one from the bag lady ;)
F.
The food are great! 2 dozen of Fresh oyster for only $15! Home made sauce and food are superb.
D.
Nice farmers market but a little over hyped. Still a good place to visit if you have not been there.
A.
Plan your visit to arrive here early. The place being good is justified by the traffic outside and hard to find parking space.
m.
Suoer busy and parking can be tricky later in the morning. Otherwise worth a trip
N.
Lively combination of upmarket food and shops. Don't miss the makers market at the top. They're the real deal.
v.
Gorgeous place tucked away. So many different things to see and buy.
L.
I love this market so much. Has everything you need. It's so wholesome.
B.
Awesome food.
K.
Beautiful experience, definitely worth a visit

Fantastic fresh food and craft beers, there is also an assortment of hand made items for purchase by various local owners.

Very much the same as at any market, not much variety and fairly pricey goods
L.
A little disappointed as expected more stalls, especially fruit and veges at the farmers market

Farmers produce - no plastic $2 trinkets. Honest farmers & their produce.

Small farmers market with live music.
Oyster and fejioa wine are win win.

Just another farmers market really. More permanent than some which detracts from the character. Must be trendy if the crowd is a measure.
D.
Great place to spend a Saturday morning

c.
Pleasant way to while away a couple of hours.
B.

M.
The most beautiful saturday market in New zealand
