Reviews of The Nelson Market
M.
The stalls are well presented, lots of produce, cured meats, assortment of ready to eat foods and high quality craft to choose from. The place is in the heart of Nelson, making it convenient for a quick visit or a prolonged stay to have lunch or for just a browse.
The place can get uncomfortably hot for many people, especially in muggy weather. Some council investment in some trees would improve the appeal enormously.

We had heard about this iconic market and so made an effort to visit. We had a lovely stroll in the sun chatting with locals, eating and buying some local crafts.
There was a nice mix of items for sale including different ethnic food outlets. There was a interesting cart selling NZ kai which included their own health based drink which we tried and very nice it was. They seemed quite innovative with what they are doing.
As I am part Dutch I got lured by the familiar smells of the Dutch food cart and did try the Dutch donut which was delicious. They did tell me their filtered coffee was the best and I would not go back to drinking espresso- sorry, it wasn't the best and I definitely will continue to drink espresso coffee.
We came across a lovely NZ merino store, and a ceramic stand (Clay Art) where I had a bit of a spend up on crosses which I collect. She had lots of lovely modern designs and colours.
I was expecting more NZ made clothing- there was a bit of imported clothing, but overall the feeling of the market was lovely. Would have liked it more if they closed a little later.
I love local markets and would definitely visit again.
V.
Loved the atmosphere....great stalls. Yummy food!
S.
I had an absolute blast at the market this Saturday just passed. I bought a lot and would have bought more if I wasn’t flying home. Amazing apple selection at really cheap prices. Great artisan cheeses. Yummy breakfast options at reasonable prices. I even went home with some handcrafted items
T.
Great array of fresh produce and local arts and crafts. The bacon stand is a must to commence one's Saturday!
J.
The best market in New Zealand so far for me !!!!!
Mixed with all Nationalities food and good quality of products 🥘 🍱 🍲
Really enjoy but today was rainy so hard !!! We will come back again for sure
M.
I love all markets. The only thing I would sat us some of the flatware jewelery was overpriced. I acknowledge the craftsmanship but still the pricing for some was inflated considering it was an open air market.
j.
Fantastic local market with very good quality produce, food stalls, coffee and classy crafts. Excellent variety of goods available, many stalls introducing new products that we had not seen before. Perfect for lovely gift ideas. We especially loved the friendly, happy atmosphere. Lots of young families enjoying the morning. Buskers creating nice music in the background. Public toilet facility in the centre of the market cost 20 cents but was very clean.
F.
had much fun in this Saturday morning market
very good variety of craft & food. worth to spend our half morning there.
I wish our city has this kind of weekend market.
I.
Totally awesome market for fresh produce, local honey, crafts and clothing and hot take away! Check out the local jade carvers as well as the apple donut stand! It runs Saturday from 8-1ish!
A.
Must visit place for Nelson on Saturday, so many variety authentic stalls of craft, international food and arts.
All of them are verry authentic, not like Auckland Saturday and Sunday markets
M.
Such a good morning out, save room for a meal! The street vendors stock some delicious fresh food. Also a great place to do the weekly veggie shop :) - Try Tasman Cheese, they are the best.
K.
The best market ever, even with a bit of rain! Black garlic paste, great coffee and food options, great quality goods and such a great variety. Bring all you spare cash, you cannot walk past many stalls without wanting to buy!! You have been warned!!
D.
Nelson market was great definitely try the Columbian food if available 😊
L.
Great fun market. Good food and selection of health products and art work. AH House bed and breakfast is nearby and a great place to stay.
E.
Fantastic market. A real artisan market without the nasty tourist junk or cell phone covers. Interesting stalls and great craft people. Best market I've seen in NZ.
D.

B.
I got the nachos from the Mexican cart and the portion size was crazy! I couldn't finish the whole thing! Delicious and moreish. Would definitely recommend. Lots of carts for crafts and art and food and drink. A must see if visiting Nelson.
T.
This is a review for the Saturday market. Good fresh fruit and veg selection from different stalls. Also good quality of stalls with local artisans who make their own things. Very easy to spend more money than you intend to!
R.
Such a great variety of produce! Lots of taste testing! Bought some lovely cheese, delicious Beech Honey and the bacon, lettuce, hash brown, onion roll from the bacon food van is honestly the best I have ever had!!! (Would normally have tomato in it but I am allergic so didn't get it).
Totally worth a visit! A great way to spend the morning.
D.
Awesome quirky market on a sunny Saturday morning. Heaps of interesting, unusual stalls. Great food and coffee... awesome vegan variety and options.
J.
Nice atmosphere, plenty of variety to shop & eat
J.
There are a number of artists and vendors--of all SORTS OF THINGS-- in addition to the farmers selling fresh produce. There are stalls with foods and coffees/teas made to order. In the middle, one can usually get eating space at the tables there. Come and ENJOY!
M.
It was good but the weather did not play nice in the morning. Need to visit again.🤗😀
E.
Good little weekend market, with a diverse range of produce. artisanal items, food trucks, and flea market type merchandise. I had a great Colombian empanada or three (with a delicious home-made hot sauce), an Italian made stainless steel parmesan cheese grater, steamed dumplings, really great smoked snapper to take home, and a mighty fine knobliener sausage with kraut and German mustard from Doris at Bratwurst Grill. There's also decent coffee to be found, and while it wouldn't hurt the market environment to add some live music or busking, it's a charming way to spend a sunny Saturday morning in Nelson.
T.
Always love the market, there's something for everyone and pretty much everything under the sun! Love the creativity of the craftsmen and of course, always great food! Some beautiful things, if you're looking for gift ideas, this is the perfect place to find inspiration!
J.
Lovely day out for a Saturday. Open from 8am-1pm with fresh produce, international street eats and a range of arts & crafts.
S.
The best place in the country to get top-notch local produce. Cheeses are divine. 🍽🥨
D.
This may be the best farmers market in Nz. I do think it is the longest running. Amazing selection of produce, specialty foods and artistic items and bits and pieces. Very very busy usually. My faves are; the pate guys, flavoured roasted nuts and the produce guy with the mustache always is cheapest and then he gives me a decent discount. Great guy!
S.
Lots of stalls, great to have a look for a bargain.
S.
It's got lots of different stalls from clothes, cooked food, homemade crafts, books and fresh veggies, child friendly
V.
I love this market. Great variety, interesting arts and crafts, fun atmosphere, fresh fruit and veg.... I could go on. Perfect snapshot of the area
L.
Possibly the best market I have been to, if not it's right up there. Plenty of stalls with varying local products. All the stall holders were pleasant to talk with. Even if I didn't purchase anything. The range was fantastic from local honey, soap, wooden chopping boards, material artists and a plethora of food stalls.
I say take your time wander around slowly and enjoy this market if the opportunity presents itself.
J.
Nice beautiful place wouldn't recommend the Frapees watery chocolate milk
K.
Had fun looking at all the stalls. Bought our salad ingredients from here and the most beautiful tasting strawberries we have had in years.
J.
a delightful little market with more international flair than was expected.
S.
Was great to visit with lots of great NZ artists there
C.
Best market I've been to in NZ and other places. Huge variety, quality crafted goods from NZ and nothing from China! 😁
A.
Good place, especially like that Māori bread
D.
Very good market with NZ made crafts, fresh food and a good atmosphere
N.
Yummy food, great natural products 💖
S.
Wasn't on this time because of Covid, so didn't get to buy special gifts to take home.
J.
Loved every part of the market. Food is amazing so are the people and what they have to offer wither it be food, clothes or other objects. It's a definite must to visit if you go to Nelson
R.
This is an absolute must do on the Saturday morning whilst in Nelson, quite a large market with fantastic varieties of stalls. Lots of great food, veg6 and fruits etc. and lots of places to eat and drink whilst meandering through the market. This goes especially in regards to the Dutch-Nederlands stall, great genuine Dutch Applecake and cream, ollibollen, pofertijes and perfect percolated coffee and other foods and drinks. One little about four year girl drags her Mum there every Saturday for her hot chocolate and to visit the toilet which this 4 year old said are the most beautiful in the world, gorgeous plus I don't think Mum minded too much either.
The wood turners times three had amazing beautiful work, the best was Glen Wood Craft by Kemp Lenihan, we purchased a stunning Pepper Tree Burr the he'd bowled out and polished with both the bowl inside and outside just stunningly beautiful, his prices are much reduced for the Kiwis coming through as the overseas tourist, American in particular have more money, his six to seven hundred millimeter high Pepper Tree Burr vases at three to five thousand dollars are currently fantastic value for money.
The rest of the markets variety and quality is probably the biggest and best market in New Zealand.
J.
First time visitor to this market and was astounded at the selection of choice there. Anything you could possibly want from food to body creams, clothing, plants, organic stuff as well. Recommended for sure! :)
J.
Always a pleasant place to wander and browse, get your vegetables and a gift for that special person (who could be you), enjoy a coffee and brunch.
D.
Good place, Saturday holiday with friends to buy things. Unfortunately, most of them are works of art.
D.
The Nelson Market is certainly well worth the visit. It specialises in lovally made handcrafts and products and is becoming very popular as a fresh food market.
K.
A must visit when you are a Nelson! There is a wonderful range of fresh produce, food vendors, artisans and everything in between! Bring some cash as not all vendors accept paying by card.
R.
This is a fantastic break from the everyday shopping experience. At the Nelson market you'll find the usual unique and high quality craft items but you can also enjoy a wide variety of stalls with eclectic collector items. The mix of flavors on offer from the various food stalls will definitely get you thinking about trying something from every one of them. The market always has a friendly and lively atmosphere and visiting is a thoroughly enjoying way to spend your morning.
K.
Sassy sophisticated salacious simply the best selections and so many options . After 21 years of enjoying le ambience it keeps on giving vibrancy . Donna serves the best DC ..dry chino for caffeine addictos!
M.
Awesome market. Plenty of stalls. Love the cheeses up for sale. The vegetarian butcher was great. Sweet Not Sugar is a must (especially there snickers bar). Make sure you take cash as only 50% of places have eftpos.
E.
Wow, so much variety of food, wares and entertainment. We enjoyed our visit in the heart of Nelson. Loved the group playing and dancing that went with the music.
L.

B.
Such an awesome local market in the heart of Nelson! Great variety of local produce and goods you can have for breakfast and lunch! I had one of the best bacon and egg rolls I’ve ever had. Such tasty bacon. Such tasty eggs. Cooked to perfection.
J.
Great variety of food, produce, arts & craft to keep your Saturday morning busy
J.
This is one of my favourite markets in the world. I have lived there and it's a melting pot of products made in Nelson but originating from different cultures. Amazing foods and artworks. Also the ideal place to meet friendly and interesting/social people
A.
Great place for all sorts of fresh food goodies and local made items
D.
Wonderful market. So much to choose from. Food artisan crafts and friendly helpful people
L.
Great market. Lots of good food and other items to buy. If you are in Nelson on Saturday, it's worth checking out if you like markets.
M.
Very nice market with local produce and other bits and bobs. Nice woolen clothing, bird feeders, knife sharpening as well add the usual cheeses and breads etc. Many places have eftpos but it's worth taking cash too.
W.
Good ambiance and relaxing while still being busy. Lots of arts and crafts and some decent bird a brac stalls. Had the best bacon butty I’ve had for a while and at $6 cheap at half the price. Definitely worth dropping in if you’re in the area.
i.
Good selection of hand crafted items and trinkets.. Good food ideas too that normally you have to look around for specially.
t.
Decent market. Lots to look at and eat. It's what you would expect from an out door market (if you've been before), mixed foods from vendors (tents or trucks), mixed arts and crafts in all sizes and pretty busy.
No dogs allowed (despite the ignorant few).
Smoking is typical (as it's open air).
Most merchants take some form of digital payment.
A.
It's the markets, good Kai and lots of bargains but some of the veg a bit more expensive than the supermarket, that's all I'm saying, it pays to shop around cause after u pay 600 rent there's not a lot left ova
M.
Took me back to teenage days and the Auckland markets in cook st. Great vibe.some incredible artists a huge range of things for sale. Even my husband enjoyed it and he hates shopping.
J.

D.
I thought it was OK, it used to be a lot better
L.
If you can, support locals or just enjoy great spirit of this place. In NZ there are not many markets like this
C.
Has a variety of stalls so there is plenty to see and buy. Lots of fresh vegetables and foods. Lots of handmade crafts so good opportunity to buy for self or others. The stall holders are passionate about their products.
M.
Saturday Market is a must visit. Fresh food, coffee, toys for kids, antiques and more. Highly recommend going at 8-9am to avoid the shops being sold out.
m.
Real cool market with some interesting stuff... would love to come back in the summer... can see it would be heaving
M.
A graet market and a must to visit if you are visiting Nelson. So much to choose from!
B.
Awesome weekend market one of the beat I have been to anywhere, does not focus on just arts and crafts or foods but a wide range of mainly locally produced product. The atmosphere is great every time we go and can't wait to go again
M.
Well I liked it for 2 reasons: 1 you can find fresh vegetables and fruits of good quality and 2 they are cheaper than in supermarkets. I have also found an extra virgin olive oil produced in Nelson area but I still have to taste it. If you are here around I suggest you to take a look.
M.
Great range of products/stalls and nice location, pity you can't take your little dog with you in there but I understand how people with dogs not under contoll can make this necessary as the place is very busy.
T.
Absolutely amazing. Very funky and cool with lots of local produce and trinkets. Definitely something to check out
E.
One of the best markets I've ever been to! Great diversity of vendors, definitely something for everyone.
C.
Awesome place to have a look around. Some world class and worldly foods and beverages. A shame when it's raining half of the stalls don't show 😕
J.
Nelson Markets only has crafts, art, produce and goods that are locally made by the stall holders themselves. There is an array of unique and interesting stalls. So much fresh and unique foods to try too.
S.
Super fun experience. It really gives you a taste of Nelson's culture- literally. I highly recommend coming on an empty stomach and just grazing your way through samples and small snacks for 2-3 hours while getting the lowdown on local events and activities from the merchants. Good for families but still fun for backpackers on a budget!
A.
A market with great variety of vendors. The food are standard variety of market food, though some are well cooked & prepared. Almost all of the vendors only accept cash as a method of payment, so top up your stock of cash from the nearest ATM before you go to the market.
S.
Best market I've been to in years. Everything you could want. Delicious Mexican food stall. Loved the carmalized nuts great to eat on the plane home.
J.
Really genuine and well worth a visit! Fresh products and craftworks.
A.
Lots of interesting stalls. You could even buy a handcrafted wooden breadboard, an amazing handmade knife, fresh cheese, fruits and delicious duck pate even. Team it up with a bottle of local wine from the day befores wine tour and you are set for an awesome occasion.
N.
This was a cool open air market and it was super busy!! It was a fun thing to do but I personally wouldn't go with little kids - it's too crowded for them. I got some sun glasses that already broke.
S.
Definitely worth a visit, some real gems here, really amazing craft people, but take some cash! Although if you don't mind walking a lot there is an atm 10 walk away (shorter if you happen to be on a closer side. Food also available.
K.
Love the craft stalls at the Nelson market and discovered a really lovely shop that hand makes gorgeous pearl Jewellery in one of the permanent shops near the funky cafe called the Yaza cafe, also a real find for the delicious menu. Will definitely be going back to the pearl shop to have her make my bridesmaids earrings.
Karen
J.
It's really worth a visit if you have never been. Every time I go I find more industrious locals with a product they are passionate about. My fav items here are felted kiwis, olliebollen, native plants and herbs for my garden.
P.
This is a very well thought out market and quite a size as well. They have spread out the stalls so you don't get groups of stalls all selling the same thing in the same place. They also have a wide variety of stalls so you never think that there is too many one particular type of stall. The farmers and producers are there selling fresh fruit and veg, the bakers are there with fresh bread (may be all gone if you get there later), local jewellers, food stalls, artists and lots of things in between. They are all local producers as well. If you are in Nelson on a Saturday, then make this a must see.
C.
I love the Nelson Market it is the best in the world
N.
Fantastic/super creative stalls. Ot cheap but I love the variety of crafts and clothes, jewellery and food. I was very frustrated however by the lack of eftpos facilities. You definitely need a large wad of cash if you go to this market.
G.
Good food great service and helpful staff.
Easy parking
F.

The Saturday market is a must see when in Nelson. The Dutch cart has Apple cakes and uniquely brewed coffee which is definitely worth warming up with in winter. Beautifully crafted goods make perfect gifts and best priced local produce worth going to get every week. Don't miss this market. Tip: take cash with you or visit ATM prior to arriving as you could wait in que for that. Also go early to avoid the crowds.

Very overpriced, but there's some interesting things to look at. I personally wouldn't buy anything at the prices they're asking for. Makes for a nice stroll on a sunny day but the place is packed so avoid it if you dislike crowds.
D.

A.
Outstanding. Many, many interesting stalls here. Plus lots of local and international food stalls. Plus good coffee. An outstanding experience, not to be missed!
G.
This market is truly local and you can easily spend 2-3 hours cruising around the stalls, tasting all that the Nelson region with its artisan cheese makers, bakers, honey gatherers, fruit and vege growers has to offer. It is also full of creative craftspeople and a good way to find some unique gifts for others or even yourself! We certainly left our contribution to the Nelson economy. If visiting Nelson try to make sure you are there on Saturday and experience this excellent market.
R.
The Nelson market has been going for years. It has become one of New Zealand's best artisan markets in my opinion, with a lot of excellent locals selling ready to eat food, fresh veges, specialty cheese, sausage, knives, jewellery, preserves, art, clothes, tools and much more. There is also a good range of takeaways, asian and european. European craftspeople have gravitated to the region for a long time, and bought with them world class knowledge art and products. Now there is an eclectic mix of cultures that makes this stand out as an exceptionally worthwhile visit. If you are going to Nelson, don't miss it, Saturday mornings. Buy great coffee there, something for morning tea or breakfast, and everything you need for a great meal at home. Gift shopping is easy too, so many original items of good quality. Worth a special trip.
R.
