Reviews of Northern Rocks
D.
Easy fun for a few hours, staff were super nice and the vibe of the place was chill and friendly and respectful. Relaxed and everyone can just have a go. Great variety and place was clean and open. Just wish they had aircon lol.
M.
Great bouldering place! Loved that the levels were all well labelled. Definitely recommend especially if you’re a beginner.
P.
Best boulder gym I’ve been to in the country so far. The fun, varied route setting and friendly community vibe has kept me coming back regularly for a year now and couldn’t recommend it more!
B.
A fairly new rock climbing facility over the Shore. Unlike other rock climbing places, there is no belay as the climbs aren't very high. There are a few which require a small climb down before jumping down to the mats below.
Different coloured handholds denotes different climb levels so you can see how hard something is by looking for colours, similar to other places. They also have a mechanical wall which can be controlled by a smart phone and a small gym in the corner. They also have finger hold ledges to practice on.
Really friendly staff and so are the other people there. They give you an induction especially on how to roll backwards when you fall off. $20 entry fee with $5 shoe hire (you need climbing shoes but you can provide your own).
It was a really fun and tiring experience trying to climb all the walls even if you couldn't. It was really interesting watching how the really good ones climb though.
J.
Brilliant for the whole family. Great friendly staff and centre is well presented with excellent facilities. Plus the coffee is good 👍
s.
Great service when buying some shoes - first pair were a half size too small and had a super quick response and new pair in no time at all! Will definitely shop from them again
C.
Such an amazing place. Climbing for all ages and fitness levels and the routes change often enough to keep things interesting and challenging.
D.
The monkey brain needed taming and the body needed training. The best of both worlds for static / dynamic strength and weight training, this is now my new peanut butter & jam. Facilities are great, for kids (both big and small). Yoga and climbing classes to suit levels. Routes are reset regularly. The instructors / staff are knowledgeable and so patient. Coffee is on point. The only draw card is the parking, however the bus route on Diana is convenient. The best part, are the people and the social atmosphere. We’re hooked.
P.
Great place for bouldering for everybody, there are problems with various difficulties from the absolute beginner to a seasoned climber. Kid friendly, can cover a school holiday day in bad weather or if the kids are keen to climb. A tad bit pricey for us but the admission has no time limit for the day.
A.
Friendly staff and great place
A.
Fantastic place. Best gym I’ve ever been to
C.
Northern rocks has a lot going for it. Great walls, good training facilities, super clean toilets and showers. The only thing that prevents it from getting a five star review from me is that the routes are all a bit similar, not really covering the full range of climbing. This is down to the holds they have chosen, which look great on the wall, not the quality of the routesetting, which is excellent given the restrictions of the available holds.
This shouldn’t put off beginners or casual climbers, but it is a bit restricting for more serious rock monkeys.
B.
Best bouldering centre in New Zealand. There is a good range of climbing available with top out walls, incline walls etc. A great range of climbs for all levels of ability and fitness.
Very friendly staff.
Whilst there isn’t a formal cafe, they do serve tea / coffee and some packaged food like nut bars and ice cream.
The climbing centre is also dog friendly which is an added extra bonus.
J.
Fantastic atmosphere, helpful staff. My new favourite Gym
J.
Great deal for your first entry you get a whole week. The climbs were fun but challenging for a novice like myself. The staff are friendly and thorough in the health and safety orientation. Seems like a very well managed gym.
S.
Holy smokes, this place is sick. Have only done top roping before and it took me some convincing as I'm an hour away to come here. But DAYYYUUUM!! I loved it so so much I'm itching to get back. Really wholesome understanding culture here that's super inviting and it's such a reasonable price for the really really good facilities. Bless y'all 😤😍
D.
Best indoor climbing venue in the Nth Island. Friendly staff & vibe have created a real community. Light & bright. Clean. Superb extra classes (yoga / weights / technique etc). Outdoor trips organised. Good caffeine. Gear Shop. Apart from a solid workout it's great fun. Just go there!
S.
Here is where I started bouldering/climbing! Just love it! Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, suitable temperature in all seasons, etc. all make Northern Rocks one of my favourites.
It’s not very cheap, but everything is great and in high quality.
I’m very happy with going there 💪💪
(This is a photo of me only after 3 months bouldering there).
a.
Great place for adults and children to try their rock climbing skills out with various different levels and colour coded. Very friendly staff to guide you and then off you go. Hire your soft shoes. Can purchase tea, coffee or cold drinks and some snacks. Sorry as older I was an observer but watch my daughter and 8 year old grandson have a go, they loved it. There were also some very experienced adults going for the hard levels.
K.
A great example of a boldering gym done right. Route setting was very clear and consistent grading. We forgot our shoes and had to hire, was impressed with quality of shoes and how many were available.
L.
Northern Rocks is a fantastic facility. Really positive vibe with excellent and helpful staff. Climbs are really well set and seem to be reset regularly. I go usually 2 times a week and find there is always something to challenge me (still pretty fresh at climbing/bouldering).
Coffee, a small shop, a small gym, and an upstairs area which overlooks the facility really adds to it nicely.
There is also adequate toilet and shower facilities.
They do an amazing job of keeping it clean, and many of the climbers are super welcoming and encouraging.
A.
My son loved the setup and the atmosphere. People are friendly and we look forward to going there again!!
K.
Awesome place to climb with a good selection of climbs for all levels
K.
Really nice climbing gym, very welcoming and comfortable climbing environment. Enjoyable route setting but there's a pretty big gap between beginner and intermediate levels which was quite frustrating. A good reason to keep going back for more practice!
A.
Both kids loved it. Now both are asking for membership.
G.
First time visiting, today. I received a very friendly welcome and a great introduction/briefing to bouldering. I am looking forward to learning the sport!
A.
Probably the best bouldering gym in Auckland. The space is super friendly and comfortable as a newcomer. They have good sets with lots of variation, plus they'll usually change stuff up every couple of weeks. A great spot to go if you're serious about bouldering -- or just looking to try it out.
D.
Small gym but with new facilities. Staffs are friendly
K.
Top quality dedicated bouldering gym in Auckland. Super friendly staff.
Great for beginner to elite and regular problem setting. Love this place!
Good coffee too!
x.
After first coming here with my school I've became addicted to climbing here I come once every 2 or so weeks. It has a great community about it. There are a lot of levels to choose from I'm currently on the 3rd. 😎
X.
Cool boulder gym, well structured and with many routes to play. Highly recommend.
As a one-time visitor is great to train a little bit. I miss some crimpy routes for the intermediate levels and the free weights area was little bit small.
C.
First visit, place was pretty cool. The climbs are fun, hard on the hands as the holds are rougher than top rope places. Difficulties that start at 'coloured holds like a ladder' and progress to 'I'm not sure humans should be able to do that... ' - ill be back again.
J.
Fun but overpriced. Has a reasonable selection of problems and is well designed with excellent clean facilities but $20 for entry only, and more if you need to hire shoes is extortionate compared to Extreme Edge and Vertical Adventures where you can top rope also.
J.
It's north of the city. And full of rocks. Lives up to name perfectly.
Good staff. Cheap shoe rental for beginners. Chill atmo.
J.
The facilities are excellent, however, some of the staff could use a refresher on their customer service skills. I've got a handful of times now, and most of the staff are really friendly, but there's one girl, with glasses who always gives the impression that she does not want to be there. One time I entered and waited at the counter for someone to take my money, and she sat there, looked up at me and then went back to her facebooking. Another time, I accidently tried to turn the tap on from the wrong handle when filling up my bottle, and she rolled her eyes at me before saying which handle to use after my initial confusion.
Don't get me wrong, I think the gym is a great addition to Auckland, and it's a really good gym to climb at, but this one girl working there has managed to ruin my experience there more than once!
A.
really great gym -- interesting setting on phenomenal walltopia walls, complete with an arch, two topout boulders, and two non topout sections. A tension board, great set of cubbies, and bench seating round out a very welcoming bouldering experience with all the most modern amenities. highly recommended.
J.
Brilliant indoor bouldering gym. Multiple levels of difficulty. Bouldering only, no top-rope or lead. Focuses on bouldering.
M.
This is a great place for climbing both for novices and for experienced climbers!
R.
Such a friendly and dynamic place! Would highly recommend to anybody, whether you're new to bouldering or need something a little harder to keep you on your toes.
Big yes! Thanks guys!

E.
Great atmosphere, routes changed regularly enough for you to master your previous climbs but still have some new ones. Friendly staff and the occasional dog around the place.
R.
Great bouldering set up, got me into the sport after being dubious having tried some average walls elsewhere. Conveniently placed and great environment.
M.
Great facility, staff and always great new people to meet and climb with.
a.
Northern Rocks is by far the best bouldering gym in Auckland and it has the best staff members. I really enjoy my time there.
B.

R.
Friendly and professional staff. Nicely built environment. Will recommend to have better air circulation.
