Reviews of Uprising
J.
What a fabulous place!
Few businesses provide an inspiring combination of exercise, social and therapeutic amenities as the food people at Uprising.
I attended the Christchurch round of the National Indoor Bouldering Series (NIBS) this last Sunday and even though there was a lot of competitiveness everyone was having a super time.
The Bouldering activities seem to provide the perfect mix of personal challenge and camaraderie.
It was great to see everyone from preschoolers to grandparents on the walls having fun.
K.
Enjoyed traditional-style boulder problems of slabs or highballs resembling the Castle Hill boulders. Overall, a great facility for fun climbs for all age groups.
J.
Great place to take active little ones. Cafe looks nice too. I'll definetly be going back to check out the bouldering!
H.
Amazing climbing gym for all skill levels including little ones with a special play area. Cheap entry for the whole day and cool cafe area over looking the gym. I started out climbing here and have progressed a ton and even got involved in a comp. The problem/climb skill level are colour coded. With blue being the easiest then Green,Yellow,Red,Purple and black being the hardest. And pink being a wildcard climb which could be yellow to black. Bring a friend definitely and if not you are sure to make one.
J.
This is a great place to go bouldering and there are plenty of different levels of difficulty. The staff are really friendly and helpful too. They were administering first aid while we were there as someone had landed badly and rolled their ankle. The staff knew what they were doing and looked after her really well. My kids really enjoyed their time. You can hire climbing shoes too for an extra $5. The facility was really clean and had a great atmosphere. There is a cafe/bar onsite and an upstairs part to watch from. We will definitely be back :)
E.
The new facility is pretty comprehensive, it's not just for climbing. There's the cafe, the yoga studio, the gym and the surprisingly cozy upstairs seating area with a full view around the bouldering gym. The whole place is really functional and welcoming. And of course the bouldering is great, with plenty of beginner routes and a range up to competition style problems. The increased headroom over the old place is welcome too.
L.
A wonderful gym with tons of space and friendly staff. The best climbing gym I've been to
A.
Great cafe. Great food. Power and free wifi available so I like working there in between climbing.
A.
Big fan of the “flock” pizza. I think about this pizza a lot actually. 2 for 1 pizzas on Tuesday (and a really GOOD) pizza is hard to resist.
P.
Spacious climbing gym with something for everyone- slabs, overhangs, big wall for traversing sideways, beanbags for chilling and resting. Clean toilets and delicious chocolate raspberry muffins at the cafe!
T.
Always awesome. Great atmosphere, kids love Blocland, energetic and helpful staff, good coffee, simple but delicious pizzas, and of course routes up all the walls with creative overhangs and interesting features everywhere along with gold-standard bouldering gym training boards.
No heat and no AC so be prepared for a milder version of how hot or cold it is outside.
t.
Love it, go here all the time. Great space. Awesome staff. Cool patrons. New problems are regularly set and updated weekly.
Food is awesome and coffee is some of the best in Christchurch. 11/10
G.
Amazing climbing gym. Watched NZ open finals here. Very cool. Nice Pizza too!
G.
Very good gym! Clean friendly crew and there’s beer!
C.
Blocland is an amazing place for little ones - definitely worth a visit! Stay for a coffee after too.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: 1 ⭐
I had my daughter and two nephews with me. One of my nephew's was under 5 so we needed to climb in blocklands. I asked the staff member if we could climb in the other area when the youngest wasn't climbing and she said yes as long as it was just the older two because there is a 1:2 ratio
We moved into the larger area later and the same staff member approached us and told us we needed to go and pay more to be in there. I reminded her that I had specifically asked that question of her when we arrived, she said she misunderstood and we need to stay in blocklands or pay more.
This is the second bad experience I have had so we will not be returning and will be passing on our experiences to other.
UPDATE: 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Following this review, I received a phone call from the acting General Manager, who was very open to my feedback and took this constructively.
I discussed my experience as a customer - in short I left feeling unsatisfied. I disagree with the saying "the customer is always right" however, I do believe that the customer should always leave feeling satisfied.
Thank you for valuing customer feedback and providing a fantastic customer experience as a result!
I will now be sharing the great experience I have had at Uprising.
Thank you, again.
C.
Great Boulder hall. They’re offering also great pizza.
m.
Only bouldering gym I have ever been to, however compared to others I see online this is clearly better than almost all of them. Super clear, awesome staff, nice cafe and solid training area, complete with general gym equipment.
The thing that stands out to me the most is the layout. The room is open and has some cool central walls and overhangs, but the spacing between climbs is AMAZING compared to others I have seen on YouTube or instagram.
5 stars easy!
S.
Great hour afternoon or day. Staff are great ask and they can help you out. Food ok unless your having chips or pizza.
K.
For those of you who haven't been, you need to. One of the most fun places to go in Christchurch, where you get fit, have fun, and meet new people. Massive range of climbing, from extremely easy, right through to the seemingly impossible. Some of the climbs are changed weekly too, which keeps things fresh and interesting. The other climbers tend to be pretty helpful too if you can't figure out a climb, and share a bit of advice on how to scale it.
Staff are great - really helpful and friendly, and the cafe is pretty good too. Hot drinks are 50:50 though, one I had was brilliant, and the other was average.
E.
New building is awesome, heaps of space.
Such a cool atmosphere. Massive range of problems. Changed regularly.
M.
Awesome place to go bouldering! Large area and great covid availability checker on the website
A.
Awesome gym, the best in Christchurch. Great routes all clearly graded by different colours. Lots of space to chill out above the cafe with free wifi. Also a good training area with everything you need in a normal gym. Membership is very good value considering all the things you get. Great place to meet people too.
C.
Best and largest bouldering gym in New Zealand. Sections of climbs updated every week so theres always new problems to try.
Good friendly staff, always happy to help out.
Cafe has a great selection of food and drink with different deals every night. Awesome upstairs loft where you can eat and watch people bouldering.
See for yourself how good it is!!
H.
Uprising is an epic bouldering gym. There's so many climbs for every level and they are always switching them up for new ones so it never gets boring. It's a great atmosphere too, I've found, with nice coffee, snacks and amazing pizza! Awesome for kids and adults alike, there's something for everyone. I like going on 2-4-1 pizza Tuesdays with my partner (it does get busy though!) :)
J.
Fun place to boulder. Good use of space. Friendly staff. Good café. Probably the best pizza in Christchurch. Haven't tried out the yoga classes but I've heard they're good.
D.
Wha great place for yoga, bouldering and bonus of a cafe on site
I.
Attractive building. Very helpful friendly staff. Great variety of climbing routes. Affordable prices. Well done. They have put a lot of thought into it and it shows.
T.
Fantastic establishment. I had never done any boulder before coming here. It is now a few times a week activity for me. Everyone who works here is very friendly and helpful. The bouldering is great. I recommend uprising to all my friends
B.
This is the best thing to happen to Christchurch. An uplifting atmosphere, the staff are super helpful. It has it all with climbing + yoga + gym, all paired with an incredible cafe, that even serves craft beers! Great fun for the entire family. Everyone gets a shot at becoming an awesome climber. AND If your flying solo, it’s a great place to meet new people that are into sport, health, happiness and adventure. Super affordable!
C.
This place caters to all abilities and levels of experience. As a complete novice at bouldering, I was given a safety induction and introduction for the facilities. All the routes are colour coded based on their difficulty, with the routs spread out all around the gym - this is great as it means you can have a go at routes all over the gym, no mater what your skill level is.
The facilities are excellent with cubbies for your belongings, water fountains, bathrooms, and a cafe for food. The membership prices are very reasonable.
I would recommend trying to go in off-peak hours; I have found that weekdays after 6pm are extremely busy and would imagine weekends are similar.
A.
The new place is awesome!! It is 6x the size of the old one with a huge variety of climbs and even when there are heaps of people there you still get so much climbing in cos it is so spacious.
Also, the gym is great and you can get a beer afterwards if you want!
LOVING IT!!
I.
The new place is awesome! So much wall space, great routes, for any experience levels. And a nice gym and yoga studio as an added bonus! Personally another thing that I'd like to see on the walls is some of the easier (blue and green) routes that would go for longer across and higher up to the top as most of them currently finish halfway up the wall. Keep up the good work! I honestly did not expect the new place to be half as good as it is before I came the first time!
N.
Amazing new gym! Stopped in during the opening weekend and they were super busy so popped back near the end of day and the staff were so nice! They said they weren't taking in any more climbers as they all needed a break - fair enough! They were about to close, it was their opening weekend with free climbing and yoga for everyone! They were so kind to give us all free passes to go back another time and the lady even showed us around and gave us a personal tour! Prices are really good :) Definitely looking at getting a membership and going their regularly... Can't wait to try it!
K.
Amazing improvement on the previous gym. The facilities are excellent, clean and tidy with everything you need like shower and changing room. Excellent mix of climbs with plenty to keep all levels challenged. Staff are friendly and helpful too!
j.
I can highly recommend the beginner yoga class! It is a great environment and the instructors are very supportive and knowledgeable. I have learnt so much and really benefited from it. Best thing I’ve done for myself in a long time! Great value for money as well!!
P.
Great vibes, friendly staff, good music, caters to all abilities. The strength training equipment is a bit ramshackle, not many matching dumbbells, only one squat rack, equipment remains broken for weeks at a time etc. But it's ok for the basics.
A.
Awesome modern boulder gym.
They have lots of roof and angled walls. Routes go from really easy to creazy hard with fluid transitions inbetween. People are friendly and open minded. They have shower facilities and a cafe/restaurant included.
When you are having your very first visit, you will be informed well about the safety rules and all the stuff you can do there. I was highly impressed by how friendly I was introduced into everything.
They even have a Moonboard and some a small gym (with everything you need for a decent workout)
I can highly recommend this gym!
A.
If you are keen about bouldering indoors, this is the place to go in Christchurch. Nice staff, friendly atmosphere and always interesting routes to climb to your abilities. Other great facilities are also provided: Cafe, Yoga and gym studio.
z.
Mint gym with is of a excellent size, for the city it's in. Facility is very new and still looks pretty new. The also offer food, cafe, bar, yoga and a small gym onsight. Price is a little steep for the casual user and the 10 pass deal doesn't save you much money
A.
Uprising is a great place. Fun for any age or fitness. Great food and coffee. Lovely and genuine staff. Not much else you can ask for really. I enjoy every visit.
F.
Small but honestly brilliant boulder gym. Very effective use of space. Great and regular setting. Suitable for all levels from complete begginer to experienced enthusiast. Super friendly staff. Lovely community. Great after hours system for members. Good training facilities; bar, hangboards, hoops, weights, MOONBOARD! The best indoor bouldering in New Zealand.
D.
New Zealand finally has a gym that compares with the rest of the world.
Lots of space/ walls/ route types which are regularly reset. The training area is comprehensive with a fitness suite as well as a circuit board/moon board and lattice board.
And when you’re done training you can chill out drinking good beer and eating delicious pizza.
Oh and don’t forget the yoga studio or the incredibly lovely staff.
A.
Really great set up, very nice wall layout and excellent café. Only let down by the lower routes being a bit samey, this may not be true of the grades above V3, but I feel the lower routes could still be more varied/ interesting. The V4 and above are good problems
G.
Love it, great bouldering, great kids area, nice cafe.
M.
LATTICE BOARD. Honestly I should be able to rate this 6/5 for this board alone. On top of this they have a Moonboard and campus area along with creative use of space for bouldering, fitness, as well as workspace/relaxation areas. The space is really clean and the staff are all friendly and happy to show you around and give advice and beta. Highly rated!
R.
Great fun for the little man on the kids climbing area. Safe and good healthy activity, very friendly staff and reasonable pricing.
K.
It's only after trying a couple of other gyms on the South Island that I truely appreciate Uprising. The supportive and respectful atmosphere makes this place unique. Both staff and gym goers are friendly and you don't get snobbed as a beginner - which is something I didn't even realize happened until going to another gym. The problems are also well thought through - when climbing elsewhere before I've felt I'd literally have to levitate to make up for my short stature. At Uprising I always feel like somebody has thought about how a climber with a different build might do it. Coming here has become the highlight of my week :)
C.
Best place for bouldering I have ever been to (in my short career as a rock climber). Has amazing holds, they are mostly new as of August 2019 so it can be a bit rough on the hands of a beginner (i.e. they go numb after a few climbs) but I'm sure that as these holds wear in you could sustain longer and longer climbs. Can be extremely busy some nights, especially the University of Canterbury club nights. The holds are amazingly unique and there is a huge variety of ways to target muscle groups of the body (or just to challenge your ability). Overall, well worth it
M.
A great gym, with friendly staff and solid management. Clean and well lit. Thanks for the climbs while we visited Christchurch.
A.
A small but very well set up and resourced bouldering gym for all levels. This place has a great range of opening hours, clean facilities, friendly staff and fat crash pads! The problems are well graded and the holds from uprising holds are creative and grippy.
A.
Way better than the UC gym. Lots of routes from beginner to advanced. Fresh climbs and a great atmosphere with good music all the time. Highly recommend.
D.
If you build it they really will come... That was the case for me, anyway. After travelling in New Zealand and looking to stay for a while the promise of this new gym opening was the cherry on top that sold me on coming to and settling down in Christchurch for the remainder of my time here. And, it didn’t disappoint.
Bigger isn’t always better, but this new venue has given its climbers as much space to breath as the routes have themselves, not just functionally great but beautifully aesthetic, too.
This is a phenomenal new facility providing climbers/bouldering enthusiasts casual or serious not only a great place to train in a completely wholistic way (because as well as a copious variety of boulder problems from slabs to aretes to overhung/roofed sections and more. With really on the money route setting - which really is the deal maker. There’s also an accompanying training area featuring a moon board, lattice board, campus boards, and a wall dedicated to circuit training. Did I forget to mention there’s also a gym area kitted out with hangboards, free-weights, and machines. Oh, and there’s an accompanying yoga studio to top it all off. Yeah... and breath.) but also a good spot to grab a bite or just hang and watch on after climbing. Sit in the gallery above the cafe and munch on the delicious and well earned food or be a bit more flexible and grab a beanbag and get up close to the action by the walls.
Now, able to host events like the final round of NZ’s indoor bouldering series, as it did last weekend, is a game changer. The place was buzzing all day, and the finals, like a miniature world-cup event, saw ‘local’ indoor climbing at its electric best. Long may similar events like this and the talent it brings with and inspiration it leaves behind it, continue.
This is absolutely the place to be in Christchurch. Great climbing, great people, great fun. Heaven is a place on earth after all.
M.
Love this place! Great space, every variation of angle - and most importantly - the route-setting is on point. If you are new to climbing a crusher or just the enjoy the sport there is something for you.
E.
Upon hearing that I had a bad experience with a staff member earlier today, management took the time to text me and ask me what went wrong. They have said they will do a debrief with their team and better improve customer experience. It is a gesture that shows they care about their customers. Much appreciated.
A.
I tried out bouldering for the first time ever today and i'm so glad i chose to do it at Uprising. The staff are very friendly and helpful, there are very soft crash pads on the ground so there is no chance of hurting yourself and I felt safe the whole time, the holds were arranged for different levels of skill which I found very helpful being a beginner. I am so happy to have tried bouldering and will be joining up to this place for regular workouts. Keep up the awesome work guys you are RAD! :)
E.
Great workout. Fun and adventurous for all age groups.
J.
Awesome place for adults and kids. The Staff are extremely helpful, as well as the other climbers, encouraging and sharing helpful tips. Will definitely be back
J.
Fantastic gym with the best staff. Heaps of space with every type of climb you can think of. Massive cave, overhang section, heaps of slab and fun, techy boulders. There's also a cafe, gym, yoga space, etc. Huge shoutout to the fantastic staff for taking care of me 😊
S.
This place is amazing! First time there we climbed and walked. Took us 4hours from one side to the other and we hadn’t tried in all walls yet.
Amazing place and professional helpful staff.
M.
Amazing wall!
Bouldering
Good size wall with different angles to train on from slabs to overhangs. The problems are well thought out and you can circuit them really easily. The team there seems to change a couple quite regularly to help with variety at your grade.
Training
They have cardio, weights and various other climbing specific equipment (e.g. finger boards) so you can work that all into your program without having to go to the gym as well. They also have a yoga studio and coaching which may appeal to some people.
Staff
Everyone who works here are really nice, friendly and approachable. They are always happy to help with questions.
Facilities
Good food and beer (free water at fountains). Clean toilets, lockers and hot shower.
Shop
They also have a small shop that stocks, shoes, chalk and clothes.
Really recomend it :)
D.
So small!!! Of all climbing gyms I have ever been to I’ll always remember this one for being in a small house. Cool that they have a moonboard but not super safe to try dynamic move given the short clearance space. Staff was nice.
C.
Fun spot, for me the most enjoyable climbing gym in Christchurch. Nice variety of routes and other amenities (cafe, etc.)
M.
Awesome place! It's not that big, but the problems are cool and are renewed regularly! They got a small training area too! The prices are fair and as a member you can go there almost every time! Very nice people there and friendly and helpful staff!
L.
I love it. Best inside bouldering in NZ and a decent training area. Kids are not running around uncontrollably, which is too often the case at gyms here.
J.
Great selection of routes and well set problems, and a great cafe. A much welcome addition to the city! Only thing that's missing are some top-outs, which are among the things that I'd most want to be training for.
F.
Absolutely amazing. The staff are super friendly, and it's suitable for everyone at any level. Great workout too.
E.
Such a great complex, good vibes and great varied climbs from easy peasy through to I’m not sure if that’s climbable!the yoga space is beautifully done and super welcoming too.
R.
Handy spot while the kids had some fun. Coffee wasnt bad. Didnt get a chance to try the food
C.
New facility with a good range of bouldering “climbs” and problems.
Can end up a little pricey if taking the whole family especially if not everyone has their own shoes.
C.

The best boulder I have ever tried. I have to say it is much better than indoor climbing wall. I warmly recommend it.

It's a great climbing gym, with a wide variety of climbs and a large overhang area.
F.
Great wall, loads of room for everyone, good facilities, gym, cafe. It's got it all
수.
Loved the friendly vibe, great staff, quality setting and variety of holds (as expected!) - was gutted to have skifields closed on one of my few days in Christchurch but I gotta say this made it everything but a wasted day.
Thanks!! Be back someday
J.
We are here about 2 to 3 times a week. Good climbing and yoga and the pizzas are tasty too.
B.
Great high quality boulder and joga place!!! You can spend there the whole day, good for family and group of friends - real fun!
S.
Loved it we need one in Invercargill
R.

K.
Highly recommend, took the children to the smaller area. Will definitely be going back.
S.
Pretty good, and there's a moon board. Probably want to avoid after work peak hours if you actually want to climb though cause it's small and it gets really busy.
A.
Love it at Uprising! Fun and challenging climbs, great friendly staff, food and coffee and full of awesome vibes!
F.
My favorite place in the entirety of Christchurch! Amazing staff, amazing walls to climb, everything is just perfect!

Always good, fantastic staff, clean facilities, great bouldering (no ropes) and well designed routes
N.
Plenty of space, variety of routes for all levels. Very good setting and interesting problems. Plus beer and pizza afterwards
N.
Such a rad spot! Super-friendly staff, great facilities and routes and a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Given how small the space is they've really done a good job utilizing it and the route setting is very good. Looking forward to seeing their new space next year!
E.

Awesome bouldering gym. Heaps of quality climbs, friendly staff and great atmosphere

Interesting problems and a great atmosphere! I look forward to the soon to be larger facility as the only downside is that it can get a bit cramped due to the small size.

(Translated) The bouldering route is well planned, but unfortunately the place is a bit narrow and it is not convenient to stretch when there are many people
(Original)
抱石路線規劃的不錯,可惜地方有些狹窄,人多的時候,不方便伸展
J.
(Translated) Small but focused on bouldering. Not for children ㅋ Shower facilities. The downside is that it's a street in the city ...
(Original)
아담하지만 볼더링에 집중함. 아이들 대상이 아닌곳 ㅋ 샤워시설있음. 단점이라면 시내서 거리가됨..
