Came here as it's rated #1 in Nelson and it definitely was some tasty as fish and chips. I'm a huge fan of crumbed snapper as batter just makes me feel ill and this place had beautiful freshly crumbed fish, not at all greasy was pleased. Partner had battered and was very happy with it too.
This place was super super busy at the time we went about 6.15pm (one of the last orders) and was a 40min wait but we we're happy with that no problem.
Only part I found bit disappointed is one of the owners was nice but bit arrogant.
And I say this as I was talking to him in conversation while he sat at the next table to me as he had a smoke and just found him arrogant when asking about how this was a great fish shop as reviews showed on Google however that was my experience.....fish in chips excellent 5/5, service not too bad would I go here again for the food yes I would, talking to 1 of the owners probably not!

Not one to post bad reviews normally but wanted to provide constructive feedback. That was unfortunately one of the worst chicken burgers I've had from a fnc shop. I would suggest making an extra double crispy chicken burger for that price. It tasted like a boring piece of chicken had been planted in some buns - nothing authentic about it. Chips were okay but they were quite dry and chicken salt was not really sticking to them as a result, just all through the box. Customer service was great! Nice guy. Hope this helps 👍

Lovely fish and chips, friendly service. We went on Christmas day after they were officially closed yet they were still happy to service us.

We had very mixed results with our order. The kids' order was perfect. The curly fries were excellent, portion sizes were spot on and they were happy. My partner's fish was a bit on the soggy side, but the Kumara chips were legendary. Even our resident kumara-naysayer have them a go and would have them again. My chicken burger, however, was a let down. It was tough and generally unpleasant to get through. I wouldn't risk a chicken burger again.

Thank you for opening on Christmas Day and cooking our dinner for us 🐟 🍟
Lovely Fish and Chips and some fabulously well timed comedy re the Mushy Peas. We were giggling about it for ages. Again, thank you.

Great fish and chips. We got the snapper and we actually got a very decent amount as well as appropriately thick pieces of fish, not just fried crumbs.
The chips were fried to perfection in our opinion too.
10/10 overall.

We were recommended to go here by the camping ground. I ordered fish and chips over the phone. When we got there to pick up the order was still warm. However the fish was excessively greasy (like absolutely soaked through the cardboard it was sitting in and then some) and crumbed exterior did not look appetising. Fish did taste fresh and was delicious (if you didn’t get caught up in how it looked). Chips and scallops were yum. Hot dogs were below average, sausage on a stick not a saveloy, which were also very greasy. Our order was not salted despite being asked if we wanted salt. I paid $61. We were very disappointed with our dinner.

Absolutely delicious, I had a crabstick the onion rings & a homemade chicken curry roll ,it's not greasy & I got chicken salt. The owner cooks it himself & he's a very nice friendly man 😊

Oh my. Amazing chips and burgers. Fish was life changing. Best and funniest cashier guy ever. Thanks heaps.
This isn’t a hotel ?🤔

I was so absolutely grateful when I chose this Fish n Chip shop. Having a severe rare allergy to gluten. This is one of the only Fish n Chip shops I have walked into with a decent amount of GF options and the staff we so knowledge and friendly. Highly recommend them 10 stars for service and food

My friends and I are on vacation in NZ and wanted to make sure we tried fish and chips before we left. Coming here was the best decision we made! The owner was so friendly and funny. Very kind and accommodating. Price-wise, the food is very reasonable, especially for the portion and quality. Great experience overall and would definitely come back if we could! Such authentic food.

Was in Nelson this week with our Kapa Haka group from Auckland decided on the last day to grab some takeaways for our group of 65. The owner was awesome and accommodating and was hilarious and got it sorted for us. Fish was huge and yummy highly recommended

Totally enjoyed the blue cod and lovely sitting outside by the rosemary with little birds keeping an eye on us.

I have celiac disease and I have never been glutened. I've eaten there at leaste 20 times by now. I've had their burgers, fish, chips and hotdogs. It is the only place I feel safe to eat at.

My favourite fish and chip shop that I’ve visited here in NZ. Super friendly and amazing service and so much choice. Was so pleased that I’d finally found a chippy that served mushy peas!!! The food was delicious and great value for money and I can’t wait to go back for more. Thanks so much! 😊

The snapper was cooked absolutely to perfection. And sò were the fries. Fish was fresh and sò so tasty. Would’ve loved some takeaway cutlery and serviettes, since we told them, we were planning to have our meal on the beach. Only discovered it, when we opened the package at our beach spot. But, in saying that, the meal was delish.

Called up for chips in advance, straight to the point, got chips when they said it would be ready. They're doing God's work. Amen and Praise the potato farmers and fryers.

Delish gluten free chicken bites, great services, love that it’s served in a box for eating on the beach.

Coeliac safe, fantastic for gluten free. Before ordering I started to ask about gluten free, and the chap anticipated what I would ask and explained how they avoid cross contamination etc. Knowledgeable, and put my mind at ease. All burgers and chips GF, nice too. GF fish great. The typical kiwi fish and chip dinner often sucks for coeliac, so it was a pleasant change for my daughter to be able to participate in all the food in a safe environment.

Don't bother going anywhere else! Best fish n chips we have had to date. Salt & pepper calamari was delicious, fish was fresh, moist and cooked to perfection. Chicken curry roll was fab and the chips are nice and crispy but not hollow and oily like most we've had elsewhere. Thanks for the great meal! We'll be back!
J. N.
Best calamari in NZ! I travel NZ for work and try many different restaurants, by far the best fish n chips I've had anywhere! Owners were friendly and overall amazing service, will be going back next time I'm here!! 10/10!

If you know your fish you will know this is the best quality fish you will get in Nelsons fish and chip shops!!
Best quality and good quantity. Well cooked and amazing flavours. Amazing customer service and to top it off the best view out

The Sands Fish and Chip shop is in the heart of Tahunanui, surrounded by glorious views and the breeze from the beach. With friendly staff and delicious food, this place is ideal to bring your date or your family. I highly recommend their bacon and egg burger!

My favorite ever chippie. Delicious, crazy fast every time, great presentation, the fish is always top quality and really clean. Also it is right by the beach but has seating as well. The owners are great. It is a slightly more expensive than some but for the piece of mind of perfect quality every time, it's a bargain.
My only gripe..it is so tasty and such a high standard that ALL other Nelson chippies seem pretty below standard.

We showed up after the closing time and the owner said that he was fine to serve us. We understood the humour of the owner, but others may have been offended by his comments. He is a lovely guy, and means no harm.
We waited 15 mins, and that is how long we were told it was going to be. The food was actually quite pleasant. The chips and the Gurnard were both delicious and fresh. My only gripe was that it felt slightly pricey, but in fairness, it is right opposite the beach and the quality of the food was good.

That’s a chippie like you would like to find in London. Dam, those guys know their stuff.

Incredibly cheap, good batter and chips, quick service. As an Englishman this was very good value for money - good fish too!
If I lived in nelson I’d defo be returning weekly

This review is intended to help anyone considering working for the apartments. I signed on to help with housekeeping during the busy holidays. They were desperate for help as they are constantly losing staff because of how uncomfortable it is to work there. In short- there are huge amounts of drama going between the building manager and housekeeping manager on a daily basis which consistently negatively affects the cleaners. I was able to ignore most of it, as I was only helping out for 2.5 weeks, but felt the need to post a review when I was mislead and then underpaid on my last paycheck. I was asked to work on New Year's Day. I was the only cleaner to come in that day, which I agreed to do because I was told I'd be paid double time for working on a public holiday. The housekeeping manager told me this repeatedly (being very grateful that I was coming in so she could enjoy the holiday) and I had a separate conversation with the building manager specifically asking him about pay for that day before agreeing to it. When my paycheck came through, I wasn't paid double time as promised. When I contacted the building manager about it, he insisted that because New Years fell on a Sunday it didn't count as a public holiday. In short, he refused to pay what I had been promised multiple times. He knows that as a traveller on a working holiday visa that there isn't anything I can do about it. It's worth your time to find somewhere else to work and stay away from here- everyone needs help these days and I have found most Kiwis to be honest, upfront, laid back, and kind!

Overrated place. We ordered some fish and chips. The fish was okay, chips were soggy and not very tasty. Overall a below average exp

Small but beautiful fish and chips shop owned by a lovely and very nice guy. You can also get almost everything gluten-free, and it’s suitable for celiacs. It tasted great!

Had some seriously good fish & chips on Friday night, bought the large family meal which fed our family of 4 (2 adults and 2 teens). This was our first visit - we will definitely be back.

Best fish & chips we've tasted, cooked to perfection. Reasonably priced for beautiful fresh fish. The owner was very friendly too. We will definitely be back.

Great location, just across the road from the beach with restaurants and takeaways nearby. We were in a level 3, 2 bedroom apartment, it was spacious and had everything we needed. Loved the large living area and it opened up onto a balcony of a view of the beach. Parking on site and check in was easy. Photos don't do it justice. Would definitely stay again.

Damn Great Fish and Chip shop! The portions were huge, and it was very affordable. Roy was incredibly nice and funny

Good value for money, great service and delicious fish and chips!!!

Delicious and well battered fish (gurnard, snapper and whiting) and chips, bluff oyster, salt & pepper calamari. We like gurnard the best. Visited twice during our 2D1N stay in Nelson.
Sad to know they are letting go their business for a break and for good. Good for them!!

Amazing fish and chip shop right near the beach, large delicious portions. The owner is super nice as well, can't recommend enough

Picked up some Fish and Chips for the students after paddle boarding in Tahuna - for some of the international students it was their first time trying the kiwi classic meal. They raved about the food! Good size fish and some of the best chips we've had in ages! We'll be back again for sure.

WOW! Our whole family loved their fresh yummy GF burgers. Best chunky chips ever. We rarely buy takeaways but after this discovery while visiting Nelson, ended up there 3x in 3 days!! 😂 Just wish there was somewhere similar in Auckland. 100% super highly recommend!!

Decent price, Tarakihi battered fish and chips was the best I tasted (we are from Australia). Salt and pepper calamari was delicious.

He is brilliant. 6 of us walked in after closing time and he started the fryers up again just for us. He also gave us extra fish and potato fritters. He is absolutely lovely, I would definitely recommend going to The Sands Fish n Chip shop. 😊
