A.
BLOODY awesome staff.
Clean and tidy.
Close to city.
All day free parking.
Open internet.
Real fun place with great character.
Get yourself a photo in a Prison Jumpsuit.
C.
I love staying here. Warm, ambient, secure (of course, it's an ex-prison), good value and very close to bars, the Court Theatre etc. Could do with the coffee machine back but Covid caused that. Also, walkable to the Bus Interchange for those who like to stretch their legs.
J.
Good soundsystem in the kitchen, the converted cell-room gave me solace and the pool table was a nice addition. Staff always friendly and helpful. Good cleanliness and tge shower was powerful and hot! ... would consider staying here again
h.
very clean, friendly and helpful staff. great kitchen. would stay again
S.
10/10 Highly Recommend. Set an actual old historical prison that has been modernized and turned into a backpackers is definitely a unique place to stay. Excellent facilities and Great security accompany you here along with plenty of helpful and friendly staff.
J.
Luv this place. It's clean modern and we'll decorated. Kitchens are a bit grotty due to slack guests but the whole prison vibe is unique. The beds are comfortable and an opportunity to get a photo taken in front of a "admissions/booking in height backdrop in prison garb.
K.
Awesome accommodation!! Great experience, highly recommended staying 👌
R.
Handy location for the train station. Easy contactless check in and rooms are accessed via an app which is super cool. Stayed in a single room (“cell”) and heard no noise from neighbours and it was well appointed for a short stay.
C.
Cheap price for nice accommodation close to the town center (20min walk)
Great place, facilities are good and clean.
Washing machine is only $2.
Plus I’ve met amazing people there.
Stayed there two weeks and will definitely come back next time I come to Christchurch.
Edit: I’ve been back and it seems parking was only an issue because of six60 gig on waitangi weekend.
D.
This is the best hostel ever!!! Booked me in at midnight. Changed my room for me and gave me a big discount without saying or asking anything. The coffee the next morning was one of the best coffees I had on this trip. They offered me to put my motorbike in a secure area just in case. The beds are comfy, the pillows seemed brand new. Everything is clean tidy and available. Free liquid soap and un timed showers. My pick for best hostel in SI. Thank you Jailhouse for an excellent stay. I'm bringing my mate back who stayed there in the 70s when it was still operating!!!
A.
Wonderful idea, owner was very helpful and they were implementing some really useful upgrades.
The showers had great pressure and proper heat, which is essential for the weary traveller.
Plenty of parking right outside and close enough to walk to nearby essentials if you don't have a car.
Also a nice dash of history to help you sleep soundly in your cell!
A.
I'm glad I stayed in this amazingly beautiful historical jail. You can check in online with no need to passby reception. I love the Goki App for the room key, no need for a physical key, or use the number codes given, just use your phone. Free pool but needs a bit of repair. Tidy kitchen. The 1 star missing to complete the 5 star is about the mens shower room upstairs, it's always damp, floor, walls, and even the toilet, needs more fan extractor or regular floor mop.
K.
Pretty epic hostel but had weird dreams in there so that's a thing
T.
Nice & easy at reception, lady on the phone when I booked was lovely.
The place looks well maintained & clean.
I recommend a stay here while you are in Christchurch.
H.
I think the jail idea is fantastic, and they did a good job with it, however I was not super impressed overall with my stay. The bunk beds and pillow were uncomfortable. The toilet room and shower were tiny and uncomfortable. Likely would not stay again, but would be perfect for the weary traveller.
K.
I stayed for a night as I’m leaving next day to other places. Good cleanliness in kitchen and bathroom, friendly staffs (Dayna and their other receptionist lady). Super strong wifi even from my room! Loving there are few displays about historical jail even cells. And I love those terms like “inmate/warden” etc as if like you’re in jail haha!
Limited parking space and fridge/freezer however. Didn’t see heating system in the room but luckily wasn’t that cold yesterday night. You can request for extra duvet from receptionist if you’re feeling chilly.
The staffs are happy to take the mugshot for you haha!
They do sell and serve coffee too from the reception area in case you’re craving for a coffee fix.
Laundry: $2 for washing and $4 for dryer

It was fascinating staying in an old jail. I loved looking at the intact rooms from when the prison was still open, especially the one with the drawings on the walls!
Overall a nice hostel but well, what can I say, it is an old jail so the atmosphere still carries a bit of that. Also it's really cold. They do have extra blankets but I was still freezing.
E.
Not bad. Cool idea converting an old jail into a hostel but the place felt a tad stale. The rooms which are old cells are pretty tiny and the bathrooms were a bit grim. Kitchen also not the best. Staff friendly and located in a good area, approx 25 minutes walking into the city centre.
P.
Basic accommodation in a quirky setting. Super friendly staff (jailers) and rooms (cells) are small but comfortable. Shared toilet & washing facilities are kept very clean & communal kitchen area has everything you need to self cater. Some interesting history about the jail & its past inmates on display. Free WiFi is fast & reliable and there are plenty of communal sitting & relaxing areas including a small garden area. We were by far the oldest inmates as it's primarily targeted at backpackers but we were accepted into the community and felt completely at home. Free parking on the doorstep too. Definitely worth a 1 night stay just for the quirkiness.
B.
Super unique place to stay. The staff is super friendly, it is always clean, and really chill. Great kitchen and laundry facilities as well. We stayed most of the time in the 10 bed dorm room and it was great. Every bed had an outlet and a reading lamp. A bit of a walk from some of the stuff you might want to see but overall a great place to stay.
H.
Great hostel. Really interesting old building which manages to maintain lots of old features and even a few museum pieces. Sleeping in a cell was great fun. Plenty of open spaces inside and parking spaces outside. Friendly staff, decent kitchen. It's a little walk from town but thoroughly enjoyed staying here, cannot recommend it enough.
E.
Cool place, very tidy, clean and comfortable.
c.
The rooms were nice and airy, and having only 2 people to a room made it feel much more comfortable (on a tour).
The wifi was VERY good, even in my room.
There was a nice large table outside in the main corridor for breakfasting.
The staff were very informative and seemed quite approachable too.
E.
Facilities were tidy, people were friendly
H.
Pretty decent dorm style rooms, they're totally committed to the jail chic aesthetic! Comfy beds, good hot water supply, big kitchen. My friend had super crazy dreams so not sure we'll be back cos she thinks it's haunted, but good all the same!
E.
Easy to get to plus there are lots of shops nearby. Friendly desk guy did the check-in in a minute. Laundry for pay, kitchen, shared shower and toilets. Definitely a go! The history of the building is also quite interesting
Was definitely not spooky but very clean and cozy
N.
It was one of the only places to go to sleep when arriving in Christchurch. We arrived in the middle of the earthquake. This is not a place I would have originally chosen, but once arrived it was really nice and very clean.
The rooms are rather small, but they are used for sleeping. Common bathroom and dining areas too. Given the scale of the damage, we did not have access to water and toilets. We had to fetch water from the boiler outside. It was really cold to wash my head.
Before becoming a youth hostel, it was a women's prison built in 1874. There is history drawn and engraved on the walls. They kept the place almost as is.
We must love the idea of sharing to appreciate this kind of place. People are very respectful for the food and the cleanliness of the kitchen.
It allows for several interesting meetings from around the world.
value for money, I highly recommend it.
M.
A hostel like no other! The jail is well maintained, some cells are being kept in their original state and are interesting to see. It was our first stay in Christchurch and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. We were provided with great tips to make our stay an unforgettable one. The hostel was clean. Food storage boxes are provided for all guests, so the kitchen is organized and clean. Would definitely stay again.
J.
I liked the style of this place, quite uncommon! Very decent beds and showers, good facilities like kitchen and lounge areas. Having outlets by the beds is always appreciated! Large area outside the rooms (like a prison, duh!) Creates a echo into the rooms if people are hanging out there, its supposed to be closed at night but people didn't seem to care, Saturday night stay though so to be expected.
P.
This was such a unique stay. It was a real jail before & they converted it into a hostel. Jailhouse has kept the vibes as it is. I stayed in the twin room for 1 night & it was really good. It also gave me a glimpse into prisoners’ lives. The kitchens are big & stocked. They also have a separate Netflix room which is cool. Jail exhibits are eerie & don’t forget to check out the original wall scribbles by prisoners.
w.
Really cool theme to this hostel! The staff are very friendly and approachable. It's in a nice quite place also. You don't get the feeling your trapped in prison but you get the experience of staying in a prison. It's very warm and has very good facilities. Kitchen might be a little small. Netflix room is awesome!
B.
Definately a bit different to most hostels. Staff are friendly, relaxed and naturally helpful. The area it is in is not the most exciting. The soundproofing of the rooms is excellent - no surprises there really! They have good amenities such as good WiFi, help with your onward travel and a jobs/car share notice board etc. Overall very good and I would stay there again.
F.
Nice place to stay. Beds were a bit small for taller people. Not much coverage in bedrooms due to walls. Can be quite loud at night
F.
I didn’t like Christchurch, I found this city quite boring, but well I was there only for three days. Anyway the Hostel concept is really interesting. It was built in the old Christchurch prison. Staff is really friendly and private rooms are ok to have a good rest.
S.
Interesting place to stay, with option to dress up in striped jail clothes. Friendly staff, clean facilities, not very busy when we visited.. quiet hour begins at 9PM and they close the ‘cinema’ at this time too. Has bike rental, relatively close proximity to downtown, and pool table; but you won’t have a true game as there needs more than one cue and a full set of balls to be used. Did enjoy our time. Thank you
S.
Great accommodation for backpackers. My husband and I enjoyed our stay here. The building had a unique vibe, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The shower and bedroom areas were kept clean. I also liked the community area along with the TV area. The best part was this spot was within walking distance of a lot of food places. I say we would stay here again in the future if we get the chance to.
P.
Jail-turned-hostel may sound like your worst nightmare, but this was the best accommodation we had during our 1 month in New Zealand. The location was putting us off before we booked, but it is probably less than a 20 minute walk through a gorgeous park before you’re in the Centre of it all - or just take 5 or 10 minutes on one of Christchurch’s public e-scooters. Spaces and rooms are clean, kitchen is fully stocked, communal areas are social but also chill. Dave behind the desk made our stay that extra bit special, he’s a guest service pro and a credit to the property. Go to Jail!
C.
Nice little hostel with good amenities, including a game room and mini cinema, coffee, and an interesting venue in the historic jail. The location was not great and was a little outside the real city, but was close enough to some shops and a pub that it didn't really matter. Acoustics were bad, so if you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs or headphones.
O.
Great experience! Comfortable and warm rooms. It really felt like you were staying in a jail, they really take care of the little details. Nice coffees around and not too far from the city centre. Would definitely recommended. only con is that there aren't enough sockets in the room, but you'll survive, you're just a prisoner after all.
B.
Cute idea, good front desk service. It was clean and there were enough showers etc in the communal bathroom to get in whenever you needed to! But, at night, unless you’re late to bed, the traffic through the hostel will keep you up quite late.
D.
Very cool idea. It genuinely used to be a prison so there is a cool vibe about the place. I like that they have still kept some original features from when it was a prison. Location isn't amazing and it's a 30 minute walk from central Christchurch but it is very close to an enormous park which was nice. Bed was comfy and room was small but did the job. Needs more plugs tho... Would recommend.
J.
Had a great couple of nights at the Jailhouse hostel in Christchurch.
The building is great and kept very clean. The staff were really helpful and friendly as well. The rooms are original old jail cells which is really cool, and it felt more like a hotel than a hostel. The kitchen was well equipped unlike a lot of other hostels I've stayed in where stuff was damaged or had been stolen.
Had fun hanging out watching movies and there was even free popcorn in the evenings.
Overall I really enjoyed my time here and would recommend it highly!
C.
This is a really awesome place to stay hidden away in Addington. The staff were friendly, informative, and helpful. They have done a really good job of preserving the old jail, and you definitely feel the history of the building. The room was simple but comfortable.
A word of warning to those who sleep lightly, it is very noisy. The building has cathedral like acoustics. Personally I think it adds to the experience, you can really imagine what it might have been like as a prison. Definitely bring ear plugs.
Addington is really fun to explore, lots of cute shops down the main drag. Lots of diversity. Great food/eating options too and everything is really close to the hostel. I would definitely stay again.
L.
Huge common area with plenty of space to sit down and relax. Great laundry facility and near town. The room were clean and had good lights.
D.
The best and most awesome hostel I have ever been to :-) First of all, super friendly staff, helpful and full interesting tips regarding the city and the facility itself. We had a cell just for ourselves with comfy 'inmate' beds. All the facilities were clean and useful, not too many guests and it was just a 30 minn walk from the city centre. If you are staying in Christchurch - there is no better place to stay :-)
a.
It's really cool to live and absorb this prison but stay for a night maybe two not more as the reason why you went there gets boring soon. The prison is cool but you are living in a real prison no wifi in the rooms (real thick doors) and prison bathrooms. I highly recommend this place for a short stay
M.
By far the coolest hostel I've stayed in! I would recommend you go just to say you've spent a night or 2 in jail. ;) The hostel itself was super clean and the staff was extremely kind and welcoming. Thanks for a memorable stay!
E.
So clean and tidy. Great facilities.. Thought it may be creepy but had the best nights sleep ever.. Also great job keeping up with the theme of black and white stripes.. Super cool.. Plates, bowls duvets.. Awesome
K.
I loved it! Very unique hostel with such a cool atmosphere! The staff is really friendly and helpful as well! I’ve requested an early check in since I felt really sick when I arrived and it wasn’t a problem at all! Also I had to move rooms after the first night, since I’ve booked a different room type and they made it possible for me to change rooms straight away and not having to wait again until check in time. Of course I don’t think it’s always possible that way, however I‘m really grateful for their effort! The dorms and bathrooms are very clean and up to date too! I’ve definitely enjoyed my stay and can highly recommend this hostel!
R.
We slept one night here, and we had a good sleep! However the rooms are not so big as they used to be the jail cells. It has a big kitchen and a good wifi connection. It has also olenty of small restaurants around in this area!
P.
Very nice hostel, really impressive on the inside! I love the different color every night of the week on the main hall. The rooms were pretty big and all was very clean. I definitely recommend the place!
B.
Quirky, friendly staff who know loads about the area, a few cells that still have all the historical art work and beds in. A little far from the city centre (ever had a prison in town?), but easy access with bus or scooters.
Clean and spacious kitchens, clean toilets and showers.
Would stay again.
J.
I stayed here recently and had an exceptional time! The staff were really friendly and the rooms were really clean. The beds were by far the best I've experienced in my time in New Zealand.
The building is full of history and the staff are more than happy to give you a quick tour which includes and original cell with a former inmates artwork all over the walls. Check it out!
I would 100% recommend this hostel to anyone thinking of going to Christchurch.
C.
Really enjoyed my stay at the jailhouse, not exactly in the centre of Christchurch but definitely walking distance. Place was pretty quiet when we were there as well which was ideal for me and my partner.
C.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Great location -- short walk to eating places and the city (30 min). Sturdy bed and generous extra blankets. Plenty of living places to meet other convicts or ponder life. Was incarcerated for 11 days. Would return.
F.
Partly came here out of intrigue, but the cheap room was good for the night. Not far from Hagley park so the walk in to town is pleasant. The kitchen had a limited supply of mugs, but was functional. Shower facilities good.
J.
I've already verbally recommended this to a couple of mates travelling through NZ. Such a cool hostel-esque conversation of a gaol (not jail). The front desk staff are exceptionally helpful, they actually MADE our time in chch. Without the lovely lady that checked us in, we would have missed so many gems. Be sure to get some tips from the front desk!
M.
Charming place, of course. Services are good, it is clean and it has a wide kitchen. There are enough lounge room for staying comfortable. All good. The only problem is the position.. Addington is not the city center, it's even not an interesting area and supermarkets are 30 minutes walking.
F.
Spent COVID 19 First lock-down in this hostel. Had an amazing experience thanks to the great staff and general feeling around the place. And big plus, you sleep in an actual jail cell!
A.
Good hostel. Very clean, helpful staff, comfortable beds. Free, good wifi. Bathrooms could use some work but good showers. Not a very sociable place. Only downside is location; it's a decent way from the city center (most bars and restaurents). Would definitely recommend though.
F.
The first nights in Jail were really great.
The reception staff is really great and the whole hostel is really clean. The kitchen is big and well equipped and there are enough showers for the morning shower.
The Jailhouse is located in an old prison in Christchurch what makes it really unique for me to stay here. The beds are also nice and you have a small cupboard in your dorm rooms to store your things.I can really recommend to stay in the Jailhouse.
The only problem is that it is booked out really early in summer. So I had to book really early. The bus station is just a few metres from the hostel.
M.
Being in prison is a concept of staying completely different , a hostel is thematic which is genuine and very original, historically corresponded to a real prison , now was repaired and he was a good rescue heritage city giving a new meaning to life and use an old architecture.
For those interested , there is a preserved original cell containing the drawings of prisoners and the bunks in which they slept.
The service currently given in jailhouse , is of very good quality, very clean, spacious , with different activities at night and very quiet, a perfect place to relax and have a good stay spaces.
The staff are all very friendly and eager to help if you need or have questions .
The stay is very comfortable and is an experience I will always remember for the original site , I recommend it to everyone who wants to spend time in Christchurch , plus the hostel is close to cafes, food centers , mall , just steps from one of the largest public park in new Zealand Hagley Park, where you can perform various sports activities.
Strongly recommended to stay in jail for a few days .
B.
Staffs are not very welcoming. It is more like a hotel to me. Not much interaction here. Also, the heater is too weak to keep me warm. The price is high compared to other hostels, so I only spent one night. However, the best thing is the special jail building.
C.
Nice price and super friendly staffs. Thx for staff carried my luggage to upstairs and nice recommend of travel plan. Just the WiFi didn’t work very well on first floor. Location is good just at the bus stop. For sure will be come back again!
R.
Stayed in this hostel numerous times during the last year. Always a nice experience. Friendly and helpful staff. Run really well and great wifi. It's a bit out of town but that's not really a problem in Christchurch. Everything you need is in walking distance. Good bars and shops. Always my go to when in Christchurch!
B.
Good place. I stayed here 2 weeks while I found more permanent accomodation. My only critiques would be that you should carefully study which fridge section you put food in the kitchen then you won't have missing peanut butter if you've put in 'if it's in here it's leftover an free' lol. Plus this place can be expensive for very tall people. The prison bunks are about 180cms long an I'm about 188cms long. This resulted in uncomfortable nights as I could not afford the very long bunks. Other than that it was very entertaining meeting so many people from different countries.
Plus warden Liz let me have my pillow slip back for my set when I left it behind lol. Staff very fair an resonable.
Beware people from European countries are not like Kiwis an you might walk down the hallway to find women with just towels round them on hot days lol.
I coped with this as most of them resembled European supermodels 😆
E.
Yes, this is a jail. Or, at least, it used to be! This hostel is really great! As a backpacker, this is one of the most cleanest hostel I've seen in New-Zealand, and there is really all you need in the kitchen. Plus, the mattress are really comfortable, the best I've had in the Kiwi's country!
But back to the jail-side: this hostel is impressive. When you go to the pool room, you've got all the hostel in front of you, like if you were a warden in jail! And there is still two cells untouched since '99, when the prison has been closed.
Very great hostel, nice and historical building to see in Christchurch!
R.
I get the appeal of the accommodation, put these cells were used as punishment. Staying a night didn't feel comfy at all. Little to no space for my bag. Sounds carry very well through all rooms. Quiet hours are in place, but you can hear a fart 4 rooms away on another floor...
C.
Once you find the entrance to the place which is really easy to miss this place is located only 5 mins drive from the city centre. This is backpackers is converted from an actual prison. They have kept some rooms as is from its time when the place was a prison. It has a media room and a pool table to keep you entertained.
There are restaurants and places to eat around in walking distance. We really likes our stay at the Jail house.
D.
Really cool, eclectic place to stay. People don't really follow the "quiet area" rules, nor are they enforced, but a $1 pair of earplugs solved that issue pretty quickly. The coffee at the front desk was good. There is a nice movie room with a big DVD collection, but I couldn't find anything DVD's in the cases.
T.
Fajnie …
P.
One of the most unique hostels I've ever been in. Set in an old prison the hostel is clean and still has some of the old prison left intact.
Staff are very friendly and the kitchen is large and has two ovens which in my travel in Australia is hard to come by in hostel.
J.
I liked this place. It's got atmosphere, the staff were good. The heavy doors shut properly behind you and trap you in your cell. Kids would love it. Kitchen could be bigger, it was a bit busy at times.
E.
Only checked into this hostel today and already so impessed! Such kind, warm and welcoming staff and impressive conversion of the jail! You're not left without anything, signs everywhere informing if you want anything see reception, e.g. A towel, more duvets, pillows, hot water bottle. Great place, would love to stay longer if hadn't already planned a tour around NZ. Deffo reccomend ! Very interesting to view how the jail was before too...rooms have been kept the same for viewing.
J.
Cool vibe, good service, great location. Comfy beds for a reasonable price. Happy they remodeled the old jailhouse into this trendy hostel
J.
I stayed in Jail House for several days. Prison concept is very interesting and so funny!! I can't help me to take many pictures but the building is so cooool!!!!!!!!!! Staff in Jail House was very kind to me. They are very friendly!! Also while I stayed I saw they always clean up the rooms and everywhere in Jail House. There are many tables and enough places I can take a rest. Inside of building is well lighted, I love it. The reason is I love basking!!!! I particularly like window seat of the second floor in Jail.
There is a DVD room and a screen movie room! I t's so amazing and useful because I love watching movie :D There are comfortable sofa and cushion! Room bed is totally comfortable and clean and I could smell fresh laundry soap. It made me be cozy.
I strongly recommend to experience staying in Jail House if you are going to stay in Christchurch! It's the best hostel I've ever been!
Z.
Staying in Jailhouse Accomodation was a real pleasure! Rooms are very clean and beds are comfortable. There is a cinema room, a pool room and a nice lounge, so you won't get bored easily. Staff is always willing to help. I can highly recommend staying in Jail!
K.
Although not located in central Christchurch, there are plenty of takeaways and malls around it. I spent only 1 night in a 10 person mixed dorm and had a decent experience.
Very friendly staff, well insulated rooms, decent showers !
S.
This place is amazing. They hold fun activities to get people out and mixing together, their rooms are nice and warm, and they have so much history that they display, I am definitely staying again
N.
Great hostel! Friendly staff and comfy beds. Bonus because it's a former prison walls a thick so not noisy. Quirky but cool stay
C.
So I arrived at 2am and tried to use the code they gave me to get in the door. This didn't work so I got someone to let me in, then I got to my room and the key wouldn't open the door so I had to wake the night manager up to let me in my room. Not very organized.
Also absolutely freezing throughout the hostel. There were large pipes running through each room but they didn't actually heat the room much as it was still freezing.
In response to the owner reply - it was 2am so no I couldn't see the hot water bottles in the room as the room had people sleeping in it so out of courtesy I can't bang the light on and go searching. Also no the keypad wasn't stiff the code just didn't work. The key also wasn't stiff - I could turn it easily, it's the door itself that wouldn't move.
R.
Its just a small walk to everything you could need and for everything else there are bikes to hire. The TV room is cozy as freak and has a massive DVD collection + Netflix to use. Kitchen is not very big but got everything you could ask for (Sandwichmaker/10).
Rooms are tidy and clean, dorm rooms got their own bathroom (no showers tho).
Also there is this one really cool guy working at reception.
Stayed August 2016, travelled solo
y.
BELLISSIMO, the best backpacker in Christchurch, fun and unique!
The staff is helpful and smiling, always ready to help you. Really good coffee at reception desk (and I'm Italian, so trust me). The place is very clean, Big kitchen, fully equipped. Nice Pubs and cafes nearby, the walk to the city center is beautiful cause you can walk through the park and you can also hire a bike!
You'll love staying in jail!
R.
Interesting idea, would have been nice to stay longer and take everything in more. Staff were nice and vibe was relaxed.
Got very cold at night in winter but they provide extra blankets and hot water bottles.
S.
A special way to sleep in Christchurch - behind bars... The location was very authentic, we had a big room we shared with 10 others. It never felt to small. We had our own bathroom. I just was disappointed about the small kitchen for so many people... The Jailhouse is a little bit far away from the Nakedbus-Stop but and perfect accommodation when u ride with the TransAlpine on the other day...
R.
Really quirky place to stay. It was my second time in CHCH and I wasn't disappointed. Cool rooms in the cells, really clean facilities, and fast WiFi (even in the cells). Actually quite close to the CBD by Orange line bus or 25 minute walk. Friendly staff too, and the 'theme' is quite well done. Sound bounces off walls in the communal area, and creates quite a spooky effect at night, it sounds like whispers - maybe it was the ghosts ;-)
M.
Such a cool hostel, great atmosphere, staff, kitchen, and quality bedding.Great for large groups, or even for singles/couples. Fair pricing, free wifi and free tea! What more could you need really?
S.
Close to town, the railway station, Hagley Park, the AMI stadium and Horncastle Arena. I've now stayed at the Jailhouse twice, and will continue to use or when I'm visiting Christchurch. The rooms are old cells - this was a prison not long ago - and the hostel is respects its heritage proudly. It's a great base for exploring Christchurch - with the city rebuilding there is always something new to see, or for planning your trip around the South Island. Great kitchen, free wifi, laundry, tv room and storage facilities. Definitely worth the stay.
p.
Friendly staff and warm rooms. The jailhouse atmosphere is quite unique with the staff members referred to as guards. Great location for those taking the tranzalpine in the morning as it's less than 10 minutes away
J.
A MUST stay! This is by far the most unique backpacker hostel in New Zealand, being a converted historical jailhouse. The location is perfect - only minutes from Hagley Park and a short walk to the CBD. Parking was free, with plenty of parking stalls. You'll be greeted by a friendly receptionist who gives you a quick tour of the hostel. Grab a cup of good quality coffee for a cheap price at the reception then head over to the large sunny lounge to relax. It's a great way to start your morning. Then after a day's worth of sightseeing, it was always nice to come back and catch the movie of the night, snacking on some awesome free caramel popcorn! The staff were friendly and very helpful!
Spend a night in jail - you won't regret it!
B.
Amazing place with great local history. Rooms look comfortable and cozy in renovated jail cells. There are plenty of cozy areas around the building to either chill out or watch films.
F.
Stayed here very recently for a couple of nights and I had a really good time. The staff helped me out with every single question I had and they are even booking attractions and shuttles for you. The beds are the most comfortable ones I've slept in durning my stay in New Zealand and I always had enough space to store all of my stuff.
I'd recommend to everyone who's around Christchurch!
G.
Nice Hostel in a cool old Jail. Nice for short accommodations. Friendly staff, fast wifi, good selection of movies in the movie room.
Sadly not so many opportunities for sitting outside.
T.
Kinda creepy... but very quirky and fun. My 4 year old and I enjoyed spending one night here. Clean and well equipped facilities. Helpful staff.
I.
Comfortable accommodation. Within walking distance of the city and there's nearby transit too. Large kitchen. It's fun to try on the provided prison clothes. Also, I was impressed by the speed of the wifi.
A.
This hostel has an interesting set up - it’s a former jail so that’s cool - the bathrooms are also relatively clean and there are nice, spacious common areas for eating and hanging out.
J.
Amazing staff to hang out with! Stay in the front to meet people!
The double room are amazing! Cozy and it's a cell, so you won't be disturbed. The dorm is good, but a lot of people are just passing by, so a lot of movement early and late.
Only bad point, The wireless is Tomizone.. 3$ an hour strait or 6,50$ for a day, not the fastess either.
M.
It's very very cool! Proper jail. It's not luxurious so don't be expecting the Hilton. It's also possibly haunted which is even better. 10/10 safety in numbers when it comes to ghosts
A.
Sleeping in a cell gives this hostel great character but it is backed up by the other facilities and the staff making this a great place to stay and not just a gimic. The bed was very comfortable, best so far in a hostel and the thick walls made for a peaceful night. The communal areas were varied and had a nice relaxed vibe to chill in. There's also a cinema room and you can play pool whilst keeping watch over the inmates. Double room comes with linen, towels and tv. Located a little out of town but there are a range of eating and drinking options nearby and good connections for onward travel including free shuttle to the train station. Only criticism is poor wireless internet. Tomizone service is complex to use, difficult to connect and slow. iMac kiosks worked fine.
Y.
l like the kitchen so clean l never saw such clean kitchen in hostel before. and people so nice here. stay in jail awesome.连续住三日还可以有其它优惠
F.
Besides the experience of sleeping in jail ( you could say you are among the ones who actually paid for going to jail), the hostel is clean, beds are comfy and staff is helpful.
The only "but" would be that it is a bit far from the city centre
최.
Recently I stayed in Jailhouse. This bbh is really clean and tided up and unique. I visited a lot of hostels and BBH in NZ, this place was most comfortable place to me.
Sometimes many hostel and bbh doesn't have a lot of place to cook and eat but here are a lot of places and tables. And I saw avreal jailroom in there. That was so amazing and interesting. If you want to experience more unique style, you should visit here. Furthemore, there is a cafe and tided up kitchen and photo zone rental bicycle service. So nice place!
R.
Cool and clean place with good WiFi for a decent price, but the beds are pretty stiff. Like really stiff.
e.
Service and staff are great.. clean n all. It's ok.. I just dont care for themes when it means the rooms are tiny and well..cell like. Haunted as hell too by the way
L.
This is probably one of the best hostels I've visited in New Zealand. Great rooms, Wifi is free and amazingly fast and staff is friendly. Definitely would stay again.
p.
Lovely place to stay, they've kept the prison theme running, gas Hot water with fantastic shower pressure (don't drop the soap) communal kitchen and well maintained facilities.
M.
Clean, organised, super well equipped kitchen, nice common area to meet other travellers and chill, great showers and free WiFi. One of the best backpacker accommodation I have stayed.
P.
A very unique opportunity to stay in a historic jail. The staff are brilliant with solving any travel issues you might have and are happy to share their local knowledge of places to see and things to do around Christchurch.
You are always greeted by the smell of fresh coffee in the morning as you walk into the sunny communal lounge at the front of the Jail.
There are plenty of computers to access the internet on, WIFI is also available. There is a tv room and a cinema room for watching movies with a large assortment of DVDs to choose from. There is also a free pool table and dart board up in an area looking out over the inside of the jail.
There are plenty of new trendy restaurants, bars and cafe's to choose from all in the surrounding area and there always seemed to be something going on at either the sports stadium or the CBS arena entertainment venue just down the road.
K.
My only complaint is the lighting in the bed rooms. Awful fluorescent overhead lighting. And it clicks for awhile after turned off. Need a more warm lighting like in the social areas. The lighting in the beds makes me feel insane .
R.
This looks exactly what a former jail looks like. It has excellent facilities with friendly staff. You get 500 mb of free wi-fi and can buy a lot more. There are a ton of macs that you can use as well.
Now it is a bit of a walk from the i-site where my bus dropped me off but it is near a lot of cheap food places and bars. It's dearer than what I would normally pay but I feel you get what you pay for.
C.
Great quality and a decent price but the staff's lack of enthusiasm in taking care of basic questions leaves something to be desired. Parking gets full and the housekeeping staff bring their very young children to work so don't expect to sleep in. When asked about parking the response was basically a shrug with no other suggestions as to where to park, leaving us searching on our own
M.
This I a great hostel. Private rooms are in cells and they have great internet here. Facilities are great they have everything you need and it is walking distance to the city center. I would highly recommend.
M.
Its surprisingly comfy and with big rooms although the showers/toilets are a bit small but all together its very nice
M.
A very unique form of accommodation and loads of fun. The 'jail cells' are adequate rooms and the whole experience is a real hoot. A 'must try' for any stay in Chch.
I.
What a special experience! Room is not big but clean. Staff is very friendly to give lots of information about travel. I'll recommend other guy to come!
J.
Great atmosphere. Great price. Very well organised and excellent infrastructure. Unfortunately, the person at the reception wasn't at par with the rest. Not very friendly, not very helpful and a bit too relaxed and lacking a customer service attitude.
M.
Cool vibe and clean. Comfy beds. We keep coming back when we're in Christchurch and it's consistently a great experience.
V.
Exceptional value, clean, bright building. Interesting history. Due to the nature of the building guests tend to be very quiet when they are inside, making for a relaxing stay.
C.
Great set up if you're keen on history. Nice an comfortable too
F.
It is a great Hostel !
The staff is friendly, it is quiet and clean.
There are 2 rooms to watch movies, plenty of chillout space and the prices are good.
T.
Super cool and almost creepy vibe Haha. 2nd oldest jailhouse in NZ I believe ? Overall cool place. A little old and worn down but not too shabby
A.
Nothing special, but not bad either
A.
Great site for a hostel. Location is a bit out of the center which is the biggest downside. Also slightly more expensive than usual, but they make up for it with a unique experience.
J.
It's a nice and fun hostel. The house is a little cold but you can't expect more from a former prison! :-)
A.
Decent WiFi. Clean and spacious. Good beds and loads of power sockets. Bit far from cbd otherwise 5 star
B.
I enjoyed it. Amazing kitchen, good facilities. It would really suit a bar or a more social area for 'inmates' to socialise if they wish
A.
We loved the way you did up jail. It was very clean and quiet. The staff were very informative and friendly and helpful.
G.
really cool hostel and amazing staff - especially dave! made my stay so much better 😊
A.
Best Hostel I’ve been in in NZ! Perfekt service and a really cool house! Absolutely recommended!
S.
Fabulous. Small room as you'd expect a prison cell would be, but comfy and friendly staff. Great for 1 or 2 nights.
A.
Cool idea to be staying in an old jailhouse. It is very spacious suprisingly. Location is pretty good. Plenty shops nearby. Just south west of the city central.
S.
Really nice hostel! It's cheap, really interesting, nice stuff and very clean facilities. Can totally recommend!
F.
Great place to stay! Very tidy and you can leave your bags in the luggage room before the check in time.
S.
Staff were incredibly helpful and went out their way to help us find bus routes and told us about attractions in and around Christchurch
J.
Clean, fun hostel. Jail cells are tiny, but overall a great place to stay.
M.
Really well done. Lots of Jail references, e.g. your room is your cell.
N.
It's fun to spend a night in a jail turned youth hostel, but be aware that such old stone buildings tend to echo every sound and be quite noisy
L.
Very Good, very cleab hostel. Due to the fact that this hostel is built into a prison the atmosphere is not cozy at all :D
M.
The prison theme was spot on. Rooms were clean, and the neighborhood is quiet but a short walk to the « center » of town.
R.
I stayed here one night and they had very good accommodations from showers to WiFi and even a movie room.
M.
I love the different experience of staying in an accomodation. It really was a jail but the cells were good and comfortable.
L.
Good place for a short stay. Small rooms but good price, and close to many food places.
D.
Excellent place for different accommodation. Scary but interesting.
Would definitely like to do again
S.
Great place. I only had a very brief stay but it seemed super cool and well set up.
W.
This has all the amenities you can reasonably expect from a hostel and a very unique location to complete the experience.
R.
This was a fun place to stay and hang out. The rooms are tiny and there are only shared bathrooms, which are also tiny, but it was still worth it.
g.
Great place a unique experience, friendly staff. Clean kitchens and bathrooms. Perfect.
C.
Cheapish, warm and cosy. Backpackers accomodation, some single and double rooms, mostly bunks.
S.
Very unique and fun accommodation. Well priced and nicely located.
M.
Very clean, modest and odd accomodation. Still worth a stay
J.
Good kitchen, good chilling areas, really great starting or ending location for your trip.
k.
Great place great price great experience 👌👍 will definitely go again. 😊
A.
Thankyou for locking me up lol great place cheap and so handy to shops will come back to stay
W.
There are community rooms, or single 'jail cells' available. This place offers authentic jail house experience.
A.
Very unique setting, not cold and sterile as you would think an old prison would be.
P.
Excellent place to sleep and take a rest. Is clean and the reception is friendly
B.
Very clean, lots of space, friend staff and great jail theme.
G.
Really good hostel to stay at if you re going to christchurch. It is as cosy as it is quirky
J.
Great place with great people. Very recommended.
J.
This really is like staying in a jail! Great for authenticity and the cleanliness was good but this experience was not for me.
M.
Out of all the accomodation I stayed throughout my whoe trip in south NZ , this one has the most good facilities.
K.
Really nice accommodation but a bit far out if walking!
A.
Very very good place for staying.
Very close to many places to visit.
Full of friendly people.
And very nice place.
T.
Very helpful staff, beds were a little uncomfortable, but we were in jail afterall.
C.
Very powerful showers, good wifi and a clean place
S.
Good concept and friendly staff, a great place you should stay for a night in Christchurch!
M.
Really cool history and great vibe. Super friendly staff and good location
M.
Awesome checked in at 7pm and the receptionist was so kind and fast
M.
Cool quirky accommodation. Typical backpackers keeping to themselves so quite quiet
J.
Fun to stay. Noisy at night. Horrible metal toilets.
P.
Spent the night in prison. Coolest, affordable, accommodation I've been in.
P.
Great themed hostel, whilst also being very comfortable.
K.
No frills or nonsense. Exactly what you'd expect. Just don't share a cell with someone who snores!

(Translated) The hostel was very neat and tidy.
The staff friendly and helpful.
The kitchen was very well equipped.
Unfortunately not all gas stoves could be turned on in the kitchen. It was also a shame that I had to drag my heavy suitcase upstairs (due to the lack of an elevator). But then a hostel employee came to help me.
I found the price / performance ratio to be absolutely okay and recommend a trip to the Jailhouse Accommondation to all those who want to spend a night in an extraordinary atmosphere.
(Original)

(Translated) This backpack is a place to stay during your stay in Christchurch, and here is the reason in a few points:
1) atypical because it is an old prison converted into a hostel,
2) warm because the staff is excellent, always attentive and present to help you if necessary,
3) quiet thanks to its off-center layout from the main road that leads there. The rooms are also very quiet due to the thick walls which soundproof the rooms.
4) Very clean, the kitchen is nikel the bathrooms the same.
5) inexpensive, the prices are always reasonable and really attractive.
I'm going to stop there because I could talk about it for hours.
In short, you can stay there with your eyes closed.

(Translated) Really unique accommodation in former prison. Rooms are equipped with a comfortable bed and the toilets and showers are clean. The door locks on the doors of the shower cubicles should be partially renewed, as they have dissolved over time. In addition, a shelf in the shower would be desirable.

Wirklich einzigartige Unterkunft in ehemaligem Gefängnis. Zimmer sind mit einem bequemen Bett ausgestattet und die Toiletten und Duschen sind sauber. (Translated) A very nice hostel with history 👍
The climate in this hostel is awesome the welcome is warm and inviting,
The location is also completely okay as the bus stop is right outside the door.
The historic Jailhouse also has reading about the prison, there are also rooms with objects, showcases and a cell with drawings of an inmate.
In addition, there is also pool, darts, massage chair, bicycles, WiFi and plenty of space to sit.
One of the best hostels in New Zealand and especially in Christchurch 😍

Now let's go to the details:
There is no unlimited wifi, only 500mb and the connection is bad.
The pieces are cold (it is a jail), there are heaters to combat this but the cold feels the same.
The shared areas are great to relax, chat and watch TV.
The kitchen is very small, it is normal to walk around colliding with people.
The bathrooms were dirty during my stay.
