Reviews of Larnach Lodge
A.
Very comfortable accommodation with themed rooms in keeping with Larnach Castle heritage, immaculate bathroom, breakfast in the resurected historic stables a nice experience, very attentive staff
Y.
Absolutely stunning 😁 lived up to my expectations.
We are about to go to have a meal in the castle, am sure that will be awesome.

Views out of this world. Room beautiful but lighting needs improving and the 4 poster bed is too saggy. All the pillows were too fat which most people do like but me I like almost flat. I requested one after an uncomfortable 1st night but wasnt given, so 2 sleepless nights. Bathroom beautiful but shower washes the bathroom floor as door doesnt stay shut. Staff were welcoming and did make sure I had enough milk for my cuppa. Just the lighting and the pillows were the main issues.

This place is amazing. Beautiful accommodation. Fine dining and the staff are so nice and easy to deal with. Soft bed and great heating. Plenty to see and do. Would recommend to any one who needs to destress.

What a wonderful stay! Beautiful views, stunning and lovingly cared for grounds and the most friendly and helpful staff I’ve encountered probably EVER! Peter in particular was very caring and attentive given we rocked up in a camper with a toddler! All the little touches from the staff were very thoughtful. Well worth a stay!
A.
Comfortable beds with great views, & free coffee/tea/cocoa in the room

Stayed 2 nights, wish we could have stayed longer! We had an amazing view of Otago Peninsula. Castle was really interesting to walk around and the grounds was also fun for our toddler to explore. Staff were welcoming and kind. Especially Peter at the Lodge. Thank you for an unforgettable experience!

Great service with a comfortable room and luxurious bed. While the room was quite hot when I entered, turning down the heat and opening the windows quickly brought it back to a comfortable temperature.
The room was quiet and the double-glazing worked well. The bed was very comfortable and I had a great sleep. The view over the harbour was stunning.

This is one of my favorite places to get away from the rush and bustle. Stay a night, dine and have breakfast. It is wonderful. Look out your window in the morning, you will not forget the view and also the sun raising
R.
Simply magnificent and the view from the room is breathtaking. Comfortable, warm and cosy accommodation. Peter was friendly and very helpful. Will highly recommend the Lodge.

Staff are really friendly and helpful. Room is warm and clean and very cozy, tea and coffee available with a tv and we have the room with a little deck looking across the peninsula so gorgeous

Accommodation is in the Lodge at the side of the Castle. Rooms are very comfortable, and nice & warm. Beds quirky, much higher than usual. Excellent shower room, which is enjoyed with clear open views from the throne. Breakfast delightful, with optional cooked items.

This was a surprising gem on our visit to New Zealand. The castle is lovely, it's interesting to visit the rooms but the real draw is the fascinating story of the family that built the place and the family that has owned and maintained it.
We're traveling with kids (ages 6-11) and they enjoyed most of the house and also the lovely gardens.
It was a little tricky to get here in our large RV but not impossible. Like all roads in NZ, it requires patience, humility and respect.
If you're in Dunedin or nearby, I think this is a fascinating detour!

Stayed for one night in Large Lodge Queen Room.
This lodge offers free breakfast and wifi. The check-in procedure was quick and smooth. The staff was very helpful. The room was very pretty, spacious and cozy. The bathroom was a little bit classical in positive way. The view from room was nice but due to location of this room (was on 1st floor), not that extremely impressive. Since the season was summer, many bugs were flying around corridor and windows. But after I went around and get back, they were gone. Maybe a result of hotel's prompt answer from somebody's request.
The breakfast was great. There were only a few serial and some kind of bread. Somebody can disappoint that point but you can order three kind of main breakfasts, so look at the menu at the table and just order. Whatever you ordered, you will be satisfied.

We had two nights for a 60th birthday party. Accomodation was good and the views winderful looking out over the harbour. Rooms were warm and nicely appointed. Each room is different. Breakfast was satisfactory. Worth a stay and visit.

When you book a stay keep in mind you do not stay in the castle, you stay in the lodge next to the castle. Rooms have amazing views of the Otago Harbour. The bath was excellent, with good hot water pressure and lovely products. Unfortunately that is where the niceties end. The bed was lumpy and uncomfortable even compared to our bed at the YHA hostel in lake tekapo. Beautiful evening meal setting but food was dry and bland. My dinner and dessert plate were taken before I was finished and without asking. At breakfast my order was taken but delivered without black pudding. When I inquired I was told they just run out but no alternative was offered. Clearly these folks are not hurting for business and are resting on their laurels. The grounds were beautiful with a fun Alice in wonderland theme which made up for the other negative aspects of our stay. We don't regret staying the night but if you are on the fence I recommend staying somewhere else and just visit the gardens on your own.

Fantastic stay, had dinner and breakfast. Staff were amazing, food was incredible. Worth every penny. Loved it.

There were three of us staying in the stables family room. The downstairs area was the dining area with a family room on the side and still looked like a stable. The rooms were upstairs. The room was fairly large and had a TV and kettle. Shared bathrooms and shower facilities which were all clean. There was also a shared fridge with water and milk.
We also did the dinner at the castle which was an experience. The food was alright but being able to dine in the rooms was quite an experience. Dinner was booked when getting the rooms to get a 10% discount. We ordered the meals, which needed to be done before 1700 that day when checking in so it was really convenient.
The beds came with breakfast, both a cooked and continental breakfast. Breakfast was just in the lower stables area.
It was easy to book online and we just checked in at the lodge area after being directed there by the person at the gate. Rooms (and the building in general) were all warm and clean. It was also nice to walk around the grounds in the fading light to get a different view of the place. The accommodation also included entry into the castle (we did ours the next day) along with an audio guide.
Quite a nice experience particularly if you need a spare nights accommodation. A bit pricey but also a unique experience.

Terrific restored palace with fine dinner. Stable rooms are back-packer standard with rough bed, but breakfast and fantastic gardens and environs make it most memorable.

I took my husband here for his birthday and we had a great time. Due to a minor inconvenience in the room we had booked and the unavailability to be moved to another room within the lodge the staff went above expectation and moved us to the camp estate. The rooms at the lodge are really nice with spectacular views of the peninsula. They are tidy, clean, simple and cosy. At the camp estate the level of luxury is evident and the host made us feel extremely welcome. Thankyou for a wonderful experience at both locations, we have told all of our friends :)
D.
Outstanding from the warm personal greeting from Peter who was awaiting our arrival in the driveway, to the authentic dining experience that made you feel like you were the residing family of the castle. An experience everyone should have on their bucket list and plan for a 2 day experience to emerse yourself in the exquisite gardens and sumptuous decor of the myriads of rooms.

Delightful. We're staying in Castle!?
The welcome, the room, the location, all beautiful. Thoroughly recommended for a time to spoil yourself.
T.
We stayed in the Blue Room, which turned out to be an excellent choice with its double aspect views and wrap round balcony. The bathroom was a little bit classical in positive way. After breakfast we were allowed to explore the castle and grounds before it was open to the general public which was a real treat.
R.
This is an amazing place. The history. The ruins to restoration story. The accommodation, the meals, amazing staff, the castle & grounds. Best weekender we've had since the last weekend we stayed here. Tops.
T.
Such a friendly warm welcome. We had breakfast in the stable and was greeted by a friendly ***. Rooms were peaceful and quiet. Would recommend staying here as it really is beautiful and whilst you don't quite feel like a princess staying here, you definitely feel a bit special.

Larnach Castle Lodge was a wonderful place to stay. Lovely surroundings and the castle was great to explore. The meal we had at the castle was very good and again the service was great. We arrived late at night, but the team organised for …
B.
Absolutely fabulous spot! In the middle of the Otago peninsular it has spectacular views across both sides of the peninsular right up to the Royal Albatross observatory on the tip of the peninsular. The local beaches are a surfers paradise. The wildlife is outstanding from Seals, Sealions, Albatrosses to Penguins of different types. Bird watching generally is excellent. Dinner served in the castle is great fun. The gardens of the Castle are magnificent.
T.
Staff are helpful and courteous. Service was attentive while not being obtrusive. All the rooms are themed and ours was the Rose room and it was just lovely. We will be returning in future years and can certainly recommend this as a must do on your trip to New Zealand.
S.
Spectacular views and very clean. The bed was too soft for my comfort
P.
Beautiful. A wonderful place, spectacular views, awesome staff.
Loved our stay here.

A girls week away in the South Island started with a perfect stay at Larnach Castle. The staff were extreamly helpfull and informative. Breakfasts were poor considering the price and the place. We decided to have dinner at castle which was really good and nice to be able to walk back to lodge.
S.
Nice old style castle spirit hotel ! Amazing view of the Dunedin sea coast, and in a such wonderfull garden ! The right place to stay when you visit Dunedin and it’s historic architecture.
T.
Fantastic cannot fault anything about the lodge I just wished i could have stayed longer. Take the dinner option in the castle, good food and meet new people from all over the world and some locals. Wrong choice as the charges and exchange rate ended up costing us more than accepting payment in New Zealand dollars.
D.
A very unique, special setting. A treat to eat in the impressive dining room. Found bed a bit soft but liked the pillows.
T.
Worth every penny. Old fashioned looking in keeping with the theme of Larnach Castle but with all modern amenities. Every time I opened the door, went in or out there were people just sitting in the seats using mobile devices. Would love ro come back for a longer visit.
d.

(Translated) A hotel worth staying for a day. If you are in English, we recommend you to have dinner for guests to gather and eat. Dinner is the main reason for staying at this lodge, but I think it's rare to have this conversation with seniors from various countries. I had a chance to dine with people from Australia, UK, USA, Germany, etc. It was a great experience to share the thoughts of people from all over the middle class. In addition, the entrance fee of Ranak Castle was waived at the time of stay, and it was also very nice to see the difference between day and night of Ranak Castle. The dinner menu may not fit the taste of Koreans, but as a result of our family's various meals, the appetizer was Daegu, the main was beef, and the dessert was brownie. In addition, the breakfast was very rich and I was very satisfied with the menu, which I prepared immediately after ordering.
However, if there is one flaw, if you do not book early, you will sleep in a remodeled stable where there are few rooms left. This is for 4 people.
