Rooms are mostly ALL renovated and renewed... Clean and comfortable.. with a shared community shower... Perfect for anyone on a budget.... Passing traffic is on State Highway..and it does get noisy with night trucks..but earplugs sort that fast!

We held a family reunion and dinner at The Leviathan Hotel as well as staying at the hotel. I have nothing but praise for the reception staff and the rooms were clean and comfortable but I have a huge thank you for Ashley (chef) and his staff for the fantastic meal they put on for us and nothing was a problem they made our family get together weekend even more memorable. Have no hesitation in recommending them to all. Thanks again

We loved our stay! Good value for money! Love how central it is and our room was nice and cozy!

Only disappointment was that we were assured that we would have a double bed and ended up with 2 singles

It's a historic building and it's like walking around a ship with cabin doors but the cabins are proper rooms and the bathroom I had was sweet. Could sit and see. Close to town, interesting sites. Just wicked/rad/charming.

It's been good. Nice and quiet. Mattress is wonderful.

Went to Leviathans for an dining in the dark event. The entertainment of chatting to others in the dark and eating in the dark was really fun and had great time. The meal was very textured and different but tasted good.

Very dated but clean and welcoming great price

Great location, very central and walking distance to many bars and restaurants in the area. Although the central location, the bedroom was quiet and offered all the necessary amenities, including coffee and tea. Spacious and functional bathroom. The stay was very convenient overall, especially for a short stay in the city !

Great service throughout, to cleaning staff wonderful friendly ladies tidy and efficient. Bar staff and meals and waiting time and prices faultless and friendly we felt welcomed. Front desk guys chatty greets with a welcome friendliness. Hotel AAAAA PLUS. See you soon again

Great place to stay.A little dated with great character as a hotel. Staff are amazing and give great service and go the extra mile to give top service. Meals are more than adequate. Clean and fresh in rooms and hallways. I just love the wooden paneling. Top Mark's team I have enjoyed my stay. The disabled access room works well for me in a wheelchair. Plenty of room in the bathroom .love the steel hand rails. It gives you confidence when using the facilities in the bathroom on your own.

I couldn’t comment about non-backpacker room as I Booked through booking.com for a backpacker dorm bed. Well, don’t expect much as it’s outdated. Overall it’s pretty okay considering that they do have car park space for free. It’s just opposite their hotel (Just ask them if you need directions). Unlike other backpacker hostels are park off street (paid from 9am-6pm). oh, wifi is kind of joke too. Barely can get stable connection and limit to 500mbps per day. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I also understand tough time like now (Covid) no tourists affects the business. It was really quiet. Receptionist and staffs were very friendly and helpful. Kudos to them! 🔥

Run down old hotel has some charm, but not much. Inexpensive but I am hoping to find a better one for our next “city” visit.

Rooms and internal Hotel has been remodeled and rejuvenated..... Our room was modern, new and well set up..... Barry at reception is genuinely friendly and has a love for this amazing building...... A real chunk of history in this City.....

This hotel pleasantly surprised me. Old look but very tidy accomodation in the city center. Really kind and helpful staff here. Also appreciated modern facilities in the room.

The room was quite, warm couldn't ask for more Peter and and staff went the extra mile to accommodate requests. Breakfast was good value with a choice of continental or a full cooked buffet. I've stayed here a few times in the past and it's always consistent and hassle free.

The fella Sam at the desk had good ideas about tide pods and silverbeet

The Leviathan Hotel is an amazing place to stay in Dunedin. The hotel is historically themed however the rooms are all up to date with furniture and the bathroom which make it so much more pleasant. It's a lovely hotel and the staff were all very helpful and sweet. It also has free wifi up to 500mb daily per device which lasted us very long. it's in a very great location in walking distance with the Railway Station and Toitu Museum.

We stayed in a dorm room in mid-March and it was quiet, very quiet. The staff are warm and pleasant and are always obliging. The dining room provides good breakfasts (continental and cooked), over quite an extended time band. We will certainly stay here again next time we are in the city.

Stayed in 2013. Inexpensive, friendly and clean. Very convenient for walking around the city. Food in the bar basic but very good. Will definitely use again on our next trip to NZ. - Used again in 2017 quality the same good basic food in the bar and friendly staff. Good breakfast buffet. Will use again when next in Dunedin.

Sorry but the hotel is beautiful, the most friendly staff ever and the food is amazing. CBD located and squeaky clean. With all due respect these low ratings are from a whole bunch of whinging babies.

We have stayed here twice now and find it good value for money. We had a room at the rear which was away from the main road so therefore it was pretty quiet. Staff were welcoming and business like. The convenience of situation makes this hotel ideal for a short stay or stop-over in Dunedin.

I really like this hotel. Beautiful old building. Shabby chic, just like me. No complaints about cleanliness from this clean freak. Great location. Free parking. Reception staff are helpful and friendly. I am really hoping it's haunted, but so far have been disappointed.

We have stayed at this hotel for ***y years and it is wonderful to see it being slowly and lovingly restored. The TV room on the 1st floor was cosy and had quite a number of sofas to choose from. The staff were very friendly, helpful and courteous. The location is good.

It'd be good enough if you're looking for a cheap accommodation. No heater or air-con, so you'll have to make do with the windows. Rooms are rather small and cosy with tea/coffee and cathode ray mini TV available. Meals available but at a separate cost. Other than that, the staff there are friendly.

Excellent hotel. The staff have gone out of their way to assist me, nothing is an issue. Highly recommend this hotel.

It was ok The lifts need a bit off work

Place was old and looked it. 1887 I think. Any apart from them forgetting my desert it was all good. Good history in the dining room bedroom was noisy and hot but you can't expect the world and besides it is only Dunedin hahaha

Centrally located which was what we wantedwe wanted to be able to walk and sight see. The price at around $90 was OK for a double room in the center of Dunedin. Rooms were clean ish. The reception guys were super friendly and really cared. I would stay here again for a similar reason and that is a weekend away with friends.

Liked the place but not the fact in was a bit noise and the pillow is to flat however a good price and very friendly service

Have stayed here a couple of times. This is 2 star but, for 2 star, pretty good. The room i had looked inwards to a courtyard. Therefore it was quiet. Very central. Out door parking. Just a handy in and out place.

This hotel has a period vibe, fridge a bit loud in the room. And the bathroom toilet ran on after it was flushed. Great breakfast and the ladies running the breakfast are just lovely!

Quiet budget accommodation in the center on Dunedin. Stayed in one of the backpacker dorms for a few days. It's decent considering the price as facilities are sufficient and the place is overall pretty clean. However, the dorms are dated and the kitchen is very basic.

A good quality basic hotel. Good service from staff, good value and good quality meals. Clean and tidy

As other people have said, rooms are most certainly dated. Hell, the entire hotel is dated. So dated in fact its like a museum. The mind-twisting hallways and creeking elevators add to the charm of the place in a way. Service is average but I think it's made up for with the journeys and explorations one of any age can make. (Don't tell the manager - I went exploring past the no entry signs and found some really strange parts of the building and then went climbing around the fire platforms on outside the building.)

Perfectly adequate for a budget hotel. It is an old place, so floors are creaky, not level and with tired décor. Yet it was clean, cheap, warm and comfortable for our 4 night stay.

It's good, spacious and comfy in our room but noisy when large vehicles passes by...

Friendly staff good accommodation and great to have morning breakfast in their dinning room. Walking distance to the octagon. Lots of lovely old Churches about.

This ain’t the Hilton, but a specific basic hotel with history - all prices and room types, very close to the city and you can usually get last-minute rooms here, it’s huge, but book ahead, the antique lounge chairs on the second floor have power points and are sun-drenched, quite a cool ‘little’ place really.

Older style budget accommodation, set downtown Dunedin popular with blue collar business people, travelers and truck drivers, as lots of free parking available. A very interesting building with warm character, charm and with a warren of corridors and rooms set with lounges and seating areas scattered. Restaurants for breakfasts and dinners and the offer lunches packed to go. The staff were very professional, friendly and helpful, just a good, skip and jump from central business district.

Owner of the Hotel very hospitable very friendly. Food loved it. If you ride motorcycle no need worry about security. They have safe and secure place for your motorcycle.

Located in the center of town. This historical hotel is clean and there is a huge parking space. We have booked there restaurant for parties and always happy with their service. The owners are very kind and helped us fund raise for a very good cause.

the hotel was old style and fantastic. friendly staff were helpful at all times, the room was exactly as we had booked and was warm and comfortable when we needed it to be. I would recommend booking direct with the hotel and not through an online booking agent, it makes it easier at the check-in stage. Laviathan (large) Hotel, originally built 1884 and was once the largest hotel with 150 rooms in the Southern Hemisphere. It really was stepping back in time although it offers a great deal of extras. 5 minute walk from downtown Dunedin surrounded by museums, churches and a whole lot more. $29 for backpackers up to $175.00 for the "luxury" suite. TIP: You will need ear plugs at night 😔 overall it delivered my purpose 😄👍

There is not a whole lot in the immediate area but the quad or whatever it's called is only a few minute walk away as is the main town centre. The Leviathan has indoor bike storage and are happy to store our bike boxes till we return in a …

It's everything you would expect from a backpacker's place. Relatively clean, towels get changed super frequently. Has a nice outdoor square, really lovely.

Excellent service from the man at the front desk named Alan! Dining room is well furnished, Food was fantastic, would definitely stay again!

I have stayed here a few times now the rooms are very nice clean & tidy the staff are cheerful and polite and always make you feel welcome the meals are really worth it always cook the way you like it I recommend this as somewhere to stay when you visit Dunedin

It was pretty good, but in room 115 there's a lamp right next to where the person on the top bunks head is, so you have to sleep on the other end, which really sucks.

We had a amazing stay at the Levithan Hotel, they took us in after a cancelled flight and were so helpful and friendly, awesome staff and the meals were huge and great price , room were great nice and clean and tidy would stay again and highly recommend it lovely hotel with lots of heritage. Thank you all .

Friendly staff and lovely relaxed atmosphere with many clean and tidy well priced rooms, right in the centre of Dunedin and just a few steps to the Railway station and Toitu early settlers museum which is what is pictured with this review.

Not flash, old, but an inexpensive place to stay for a couple days. Clean rooms, hot showers. Tea/ coffee in rooms and has a carpark. Great location.

For an old building It has character,food was great hosts were loverly would go back again close to work and peaceful.
