Reviews of Rutherford Hotel Nelson

Love it, stayed here several times never had a bad experience. Staff very helpful and friendly. The beds are very comfortable and there is everything you need for a comfortable stay.
Restaurant on site which is highly recommended, the food is delicious.
The only negative thing was the carpet needed a good clean, but otherwise everything else was spotless.
A.
The menu has been improved since we have been there. The pastry is excellent. more variation of hot plates. For $20 for local taste, it's not too bad at all. We will go again for sure
S.
Very beautiful hotel with amazing spacious high quality rooms. Excellent location right in the middle of everything
L.
The hotel has friendly and helpful reception. The place is beautiful. Our room is well serviced. And frre meals on lockdown day 18Aug.A convenient location to the shops and restaurants.all good
L.
It's a pretty bog standard chain hotel. Nothing overly special really, but they do the basics well. Clean, comfortable and friendly staff. Ask for a room facing the cathedral. At night it is all lit up and the views from the room are awesome
D.
Bloody brilliant Breakfast. Can’t comment on the hotel. Haven’t sampled those delights yet. Interior decor, on point. Exterior, not so much.
N.
Much improved but poorly patronized for a Friday Night.
It takes a long time to win back disappointed patrons.

I attended a training course in one of the smaller meeting rooms next to Oceania Restaurant. The training facilities are excellent. We had breakfast in the restaurant and it was one of the best I've ever had. Most of us opted for the buffet which was well stocked with a wide range of delicious options.
A.
Great staff.
Nice rooms.
A.
Food choices quite limited but braised pork just melted in my mouth. Staff are accommodating with food preferences.
H.
The room is large, clean, tidy, and quiet. The staff is lovely and helped us a lot. We also got the chance to have our breakfast at the Oceana restaurant in level 2. Too many options and the food was fresh and delicious. Overall, the hotel deserves 10/10 😊
G.
Classy 4 star hotel. Very courteous staff and good sized rooms. Some restaurants were closed. The bar was very comfortable and bar food reasonably priced. They could do with beer on tap rather than bottles only
S.
We went for dinner. 3 courses for $59. First class food. Service was great. More locals should try this restaurant because you're missing out if you don't.
L.
Friendly and helpful team members. Hotel is just dated and could do with some upgrade love. Doesn't seem to match other Heritage Hotels around the country. Breakfast buffet covers the basics but matches the dated surroundings. Could also do with a culinary upgrade to 2021. Limited offerings in current Covid times with in-house cafe and Japanese restaurant closed. Close to town however so handy location. Good option if you need to be close to town and just need a bed or have a big group to accommodate.
D.
It was reasonably good, but the bed was extremely soft and felt old, which meant I didn't get a good night's sleep. I'm not a fan of the shower/bath combo but having the showerhead at neck level (I'm only 6ft) was not good thinking/planning.
Most of the staff were really great and friendly, except for the lady on our Sunday checkout who then tainted our entire experience by being rude and blaming us for the hotel staff not billing us correctly when we checked in, and not telling us that parking was an extra charge per night. I don't mind the extra charge but inform people and don't blame them as if they're trying to cheat the hotel out of $10.
A.
Exactly what I needed after doing a 4 day great walk!... The beds were incredibly comfy, the food was delicious and the staff were so eager to make sure your stay was perfect.
The room came with all the facilities I needed, I really couldn't have wished for anymore!
Highly recommend.
s.
Best part of the stay was the staff - very helpful and polite. The parking is a hassle. Paid $10 per night but parking was always full when I came at night. Avoid ordering food room service not worth money at all and wasn't good at all. Otheriwse good overall cleanliness in room and good amenities. Only gave 3 because of food and parking.
C.
large rooms, comfy with awesome views. Friendly staff
J.
Beautiful, fabulous! Enjoyed a birthday breakfast at the Rutherford, everything was top notch, beautifully cooked and the staff could not have been more helpful. I totally recommend the Rutherford not only for the service but the decor and ambiance as well 💯
M.
This Hotel looked amazing. But the room I was in. Pealing paint, over the bath shower, shower head was from the 70s era. When getting out was slippy and dangerous. Apart from that.. clean, rooms. Friendly staff. Would still recommend but get an upgrade.
R.
went for the buffet breakfast. we were almost thd only ones there and found the staff always looking and watching us. it is only $20 for locals. what we found had me excited, that was early on. food was cold and abviously had been sitting for a while. not the best I have had. won't go back.
A.
Great location. Stayed for 2 weeks . Reception was very helpful and friendly. On site laundry was a life saver. Room service was great. Highly recommended
D.
Lovely beds and nice and cool in the rooms
R.
Helpful friendly staff with nice fresh rooms, close to the city centre and minutes away from the main restraunt area. Really great stay
b.
I don't normally stay in this type of hotel. I go for more quirky usually. However if you are travelling a lot it's nice to make use of the quick hotel laundry etc. Also the central location is excellent - just around the corner from Hopgoods restaurant and the centre of town.
I didn't use the hotel restaurant this time but it looked good.
The staff at the front desk were welcoming and extremely helpful providing plenty of local information.
G.
Can't fault it, excellent service. Would stay again.
R.
A fantastic Hotel with a very warm welcome. The two ladies at the reception are not only very friendly and polite they are also very knowledgeable about the area and where to go. Thanks Ladies we had a great time. Rooms are very comfortable and clean. Great and impressive entrance and lobby too.
C.
We loved this hotel. A lovely reception area as you walk in. Excellent, supportive and helpful staff. The bedroom was very spacious, well equipped and extremely comfortable. Very convenient location. Would definitely return.
R.
It was a light, spacious room with a comfortable bed and large bathroom with a bath. The view was nice from the room and the restaurant and bar downstairs was excellent with top service. The location was also excellent since we could walk to everything we wanted to from there.
j.
Staff were really great! Very professional and help heaps with a short day conference room and accommodation. Thank you so much so making everything seamlessly work and be available for us 👍
E.
Lovely entrance but needs upgrade in rooms. Breakfast was good, variety at buffet. Staff friendly and helpful.
M.
Nice hotel. Great service.
S.
One hard pillow each with no option for a softer one. Very friendly and helpful front desk staff. Paid $168 for my husband and I for one night. Only 4 little milk sachets for us to share for our cuppa.
P.
Really enjoyed the food, atmosphere and location. Staff are friendly and professional. Great views and pool for summer. Would suit corporate stay, but also a romantic get away. Enjoy!
T.
Last stay was back in the 1980's but was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this Establishment. The rooms are well equipped and comfortable. In fact, the night staff were brilliant when the earthquake struck on. Great location with an easy walk to Nelson's restaurants and bar. Some nice touches to add value to the visit.
F.
All the staff are great, friendly and helpful. The hotel has great facilities and in a very central location. I was lucky enough to have a room looking out onto the beautiful church. The rooms are large and the beds comfortable at a very reasonable rate. I will be staying here again next time I'm in Nelson without a doubt.
D.
Friendly place nice an clean rooms are dated need to be redecorated the whole hotel needs to be refurbished however still quite nicley laid out an can have an enjoyable stay
A.
Location was good .Room clean ,bed comfortable .But we would expect more a $$$ hotel ,Bar without cocktails .
Only partly open restaurants , Small cold pool and gym
B.
Super comfy beds and comfy pillows. Some of the best views of Nelson too! The staff were really great and very helpful to many of the requests we had. Loved the location of the hotel - was smack bang in the centre of town.
P.
Reception staff was amazing, very helpful but nobody to help carrying our bags. We had a baby and 6 bags. Breakfast wasn't good at all. Room was very clean and tidy.
K.
Only stayed for 1 night, but room was lovely and bathroom was great size with quite a powerful shower. Tv signal kept cutting out. The entrance/hallway to the lift on floor 8 smelt a bit musty. Staff Were very friendly and helpful
D.
Great breakfast worth going just for that
D.
Top notch. Highly recommended. I was recently part of a conference at the hotel. The staff were extremely helpful and accommodating. The rooms have everything one needs and then some. The meals were excellent. Definitely the go to place in Nelson.
J.
Breakfast was okay, the room service menu was very limited and the lasagna did not taste good at all, it tasted like cornbeef was used. The japanese restaurant was very nice. The location was very good, walking distance from town and loads of restaurants. Not close to the beach of thats what your looking for. Laundry facilities are available for you to use. We had a suite that was lovely.
A.
Beautiful Foyer complete with fountains and old vintage car. Quiet. Great view from our room. 613 lol
A.
Great hotel. Receptionist Phoebe was very kind. It was clean and had everything we needed. Also the soap, body scrub and the shampoo was from their spa which was very good quality. I had a great stay overall.
J.
Another lovely stay in this friendly, clean and comfortable hotel Parking is an issue but otherwise always a nice experience.
A.
Very comfortable hotel, well positioned in the centre of Nelson. Staff were very helpful and professional and our room had views that just kept going! We chose not to eat at the hotel restaurants as they were quite expensive, but otherwise this hotel will provide everything you need for a great stay!
G.
What an interesting meal. Nothing on the menu re side dishes. No mention by waiting staff re side dishes, so we each just had main course with whatever vegs they came with. Service average, had ordered a 2nd bottle of wine part way thru the meal, it arrived after the main course was finished. 9 people at the table, hence the Rutherford shot themselves in the foot. Our last meal at Christmas was fantastic, menu better and service very good. This is the 1st time I had a meal at the Rutherford and to go home to get a snack to top up.
The ethos of food for real people and fresh was not kept. Lucky to get 3 stars
K.
Enjoyed our weekend stay. Comfortable clean rooms. Friendly and approachable staff. Fabulous views for us on the top floor!
T.
Lovely place to stay. Super close to the lovely town of Nelson. The check-in staff were friendly and did their best to get our room cleaned asap when we arrived slightly early. I can certainly recommend and knowing what the voucher cost we all think the evening was excellent value.
L.
Handy location to restaurants etc. Room was good. Staff were all very friendly. Breakfast was good and staff in dining room were very friendly
G.
Beautiful hotel. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. View is lovely. Perfect location. Walking distance to excellent cafes & restaurants. Will definitely stay here again
R.
The hotel is located near the main shopping area in Nelson. The view is excellent and there are museums and churches within easy walking distance of the hotel. The hotel has good restaurants and a bar. the prices of the rooms and the food are reasonable. It was easy to book a room from the United States.
j.
Quiet and comfortable. Be aware though, that you are in Nelson, so if you start before 8:30, your breakfast choices are...the hotel. Not the fault of the hotel!
T.
I had an overnight stay here recently and it was lovely. I could not fault the layout they use for conferencing. My car is an expensive model and I said I was happy to park it myself. Town seemed quiet and there were kids/ adults running around all hours of the night as Mcdonald's is across the road, open.
L.
Lovely hotel with very polite staff. Room service fish burger really good value. Really clean room and comfy bed. Only downside is some aspects of the decor are slightly dated. Otherwise great
H.
Outstanding. Great room, nice and clean. Good food. Wonderful, helpful staff!
T.
I enjoyed my short stay at the hotel, for the most part. Valet parking , full Porter service, but ultimately rooms with the best of fittings and office facilities. The room had all the required amenities and was spotlessly clean. All the food was yet again yum and a good price.
k.
The place was good and a sure recommendations to people who are looking to visit Nelson. The staff is friendly and rooms comfortable.
T.
It's nice to walk into a hotel and find a ""real"" lobby. It's located near enough to restaurants and downtown shops to quickly walk. We were on the fifth floor, looking out on the memorial and green park. I only had breakfast at the hotel and it was more than acceptable with a good variety of cooked and continental options.
A.
Lovely Heritage Hotel in the heart of the city. Handy to the restaurants and bars at the top of Trafalgar Street and Hardy Street.
C.
I was invited to attend a meeting as part of a review committee in one of the lounges and was told that snacks and refreshments would be provided. The refreshments consisted of one cup of coffee which was Luke warm and a small quiche and chocolate brownie. Not exactly what I would call refreshments. However, other than that the venue was pleasant enough.
A.
I did not stay overnight at the Rutherford hotel but did visit the restaurant on ground floor. Staff was pleasant, coffee and food was good but this place had no circulation of air and it was very hot, I then moved to the foyer where chairs and sofas were very comfortable and had good ambience.
T.
Stayed here on a business trip, but was quite impressed by the extra personal touches incorporated in the room. We travel a lot and the Rutherford represented good value for money. The room I was in was larger than ***y modern hotel rooms with a double and single bed.
T.
For a birthday treat we stayed at this hotel near our home. The location could not be more central. Went to Easter service just across the street on the hill at the Anglican cathedral. Close to restaurants and shops. The shower was far too powerful and actually hurt at times.
L.
Great buffet breakfast, worth going to as a local.
P.
It’s a nice hotel - nothing amazing but a great place to base your Nelson adventures from. The rooms are clean and have plenty of light.
The breakfast is ok - again nothing amazing but good
S.
Smile upon arrival as expected. The room was not as expected, after stay in the Queenestown botel of the same group which was excellent we expect more of the same. The room in Nelson is tired and has seen better days, like the front desk staff stated it's from 1975, the room has dirty bed head boards and slashes to the privacy curtains, the room floor is not level. The room is just worn and grubby. Rather disappointed.
J.
Great location and complete services. Helpful personnel. The hotel is a bit old but that is not a problem. It also has two restaurants.
M.
Had a huge buffet dinner party for an 80th Birthday bash! Fantastic food, service and atmosphere. The barmen/women knew what they were doing and went out of their way to get what you wanted.
T.
We had to put up with a barking dog in a nearby room. I was checked in by the rudest most unhelpful person ive ever come across. I really wanted to like it and find it charming but it left me feeling a little cold, its a little corporate.
L.
Comfortable and a great deal for our 3 nights..just a pity the Japanese restaurant wasn't open
P.
Pretty good place for our conference. Other than the fact that they often had the room far too cold. Staff, facilities and food all good.
K.
Very fancy upmarket hotel. The restaurants are amazing, but on the very expensive side! I was there for a conference so not sure about the rooms. The service is exceptional and all diets are catered for.
A.
Had an excellent evening here during a local charity event the food the service and the set up of the room was all exceptionally good.
D.
The Rutherford hotel was great fantastic the staff was great the food good rooms great looked after very good .
K.
Have spent the day at Conference. Very nice venue. Toilets are very upmarket and clean. Lunch was to die for . I would give 10/10.
J.
Real nice!! Staff was very helpful. Room was great. Close to everything. Nothing bad to say. Go there!
J.
Fantastic all round. Meals service staff. Good on you all
m.
Clean, tidy and well presented rooms. Friendly front desk service. Good location with loads of eating options within easy walking distance.
G.
Excellent service, super helpful staff
I.
Great service, comfortable bed, great food and very well done drinks menu. Very close to shops. Ten years ago it was just average. Today tops.
M.
Generally good service, however decor is getting pretty aged at this point. Both restaurants while expensive have nice food. Free wifi is a stingy 300mb.
W.
Miyazu restaurant is it's only saving grace in my opinion. Plenty of much cheaper and better rooms to be found elsewhere. Management is a bit lacklustre.
L.
Getting a bit dated but pleasant stay and nice staff
M.
Normal restaurant is closed Tuesday Wednesday and have to go into town or the expensive in house Japanese restaurant. Rooms are nice, dated furnishings tho
i.
Very helpful team and a nice room, just walked down the road to restaurants and town
T.
It has been years since my last visit but it's in essence just the same but has been upgraded since then. Clean, quiet, great staff and well located.q
V.
Lovely lunch. Rooms used were suitable for purpose.
C.
Team were extremely patient and passionate. Nothing was an issue. All done with lots of smiles
J.
A clean comfortable hotel a short walk from the centre of Nelson. Breakfast is good and there is a small but useable outdoor pool on the first floor.
L.
Lovely olde worlde elegance and super comfy beds 😍 definitely a Nelson fave
G.
Great place to stay. Clean rooms, friendly staff, nice food, great facilities
R.
Clean comfortable, had a pillow menu. Concierge helped with spare phone charger, I had a lovely visit.
K.
Excellent service. We stayed for two nights and were impressed by the staff. Well done.
C.
Great motel, comfortable and friendly staff but the gym needs more equipment and up to date bicycle and treadmill.
