We travelled as a family and spent two nights here.
Per the kids: We loved it. It was really homey and quirky. The staff were all really polite and kind. If you're looking for a place to stay in Nelson, definitely go here.
Per the adults: we loved it too. It is very homey, like staying at your quirky cool friend's house. Not the cleanest but if you value cleanliness, backpackers aren't your best bet anyhow. Great vibe. Adam went above and beyond - got Boston Buns especially for the kids, and invited them to feed the chickens.

This place is an amazing place. You meet new people easily. The flexibility of the manager is incredible! You can change room several times a day if you become intimate with him. This is a great place, probably my favorite hostel in New Zealand.

This place is stunning, hidden gem in the city, like getting lost in the magical world of them secret garden. Wonderful people, fresh bread every morning, fresh fruit (seasonal). And fresh eggs!!!! What a gem indeed! And I have to say the comfort beds I've stayed in at a hostel. 100% would go again and highly recommend.

I stay at the Palace every time I come through Nelson, and wouldn't bother trying anywhere else at this point. It's super chill, highly unpretentious, perfectly clean and very comfortable (as long as you like a 'shabby chic' vibe; which I do!). It's my favourite home away from home, I always look forward to my stay because I know I can just kick back, chill hardcore and not be bothered by anyone. The owner is rather eccentric... Another plus in my book!

Had a lovely time at the Palace. I was originally meant to be staying only for a couple of day but ended up staying there for close to 2 months. The hostel is charming and so Is the dense garden that surrounds it. Dave, the owner was nice and always appreciative of the work I did for him. Overall I really enjoyed my day and could only describe the Palace as the best, chillest backpackers in Nelson. Highly recommended!

This was a lovely hostel. The gardens ran the whole way round the building which extended way up the hill. The free breakfast was good and turned into a nice lunch as well.
The staff where helpful and friendly (especially Ruth at reception)
It's located in the middle of town so everything is well with in walking distance.
It was a great place to rest between walks and will definitely stay here again next time im in the area

The main building is a lovely old thing, lots of character and a good communal space. The free breakfast is also very welcome. We were put in the little house at the end of the garden; our room was lovely and the bed comfortable, but the bathroom and especially the kitchen were pretty old, tired and grubby. Could do with some love and attention. Otherwise a good stay

Loved my stay here and would recommend it to anyone in Nelson! It's in a grand old building and is eccentrically decorated inside, so it was a really nice change to other hostels. Really cool tiled showers, cheap laundry ($2), great location and nice communal areas.
The best part for me though was the free breakfast and free food. For breakfast there's a few cereals, oats, milk, tea and coffee, a few nice breads and stuff to put on them. There were also loads of baked goods which I think are donated by a bakery. So i filled up on bread, scones and doughnuts for a few days. Fantastic value!

This place is fantastic!!! I enjoyed my stay here so much!! We got a room for ourselves, with a huge piano!! There were some guitars in the communal room and a ton of books! The best thing is that there is free food at some days. Also, the all-you-can-eat breakfast is included and the food is really good! This place is just amazing, you should definitely check it out!

Nothing bad to say about this place. Really nice, laidback vibes. Friendly staff willing to help you. The place itself is beautiful, it has really nice art everywhere, outdoors spaces to hang out, a full (and clean!) kitchen and cozy rooms. I was in a room that had normal beds instead of bunk beds, which is always better! Furthermore, there was always free baked goods available all day, and the breakfast was included in the fair price of the stay. Hot showers are free, wifi is unlimited, and laundry is cheap (2$ for a wash cycle, 1$ for a dry cycle). My favorite hostel so far in New Zealand.

This is by far the best backpackers I've been to and I have traveled 25 countries in four years, I've seen a lot of hostels. It's a very unique old house with really cool interior design and the best energy. They have an amazing breakfast for free, even lunch sometimes! The hostel owner Dave, is a really good man and the staff is amazing and always willing to help you. Staying here is an experience that you don't wanna miss if you're ever in New Zealand.

I stayed in this hostel for over two month during my stay in Nelson. The owner is funny and really helpful! The house is an amazing old villa and the furniture is really unique and colourful! They don't have bunk beds which is amazing and the rooms only have up to 5 beds. The staff is funny and amazing and they pick you up from the busstation in town. This hostel offers a lot of free stuff including breakfast in the morning pie time in the afternoon and free tea, sugar, herbs and real coffee all day long! They also have a free clothes bin where people leave awesome stuff behind for fellow travellers. There are lots of nice places to relax like the big balcony with ocean view, hammocks and comfy chairs. They have chickens so there are free range eggs for breakfast. The garden is very green and lush and there are washing lines so you can dry your laundry outside in the sun. There are also a spa and a smoking shed. It's one of the best hostels I've stayed in so far!

I was supposed to be in Nelson for 2 weeks... that was 5 months ago. Every backpacker has little things that can annoy you from time to time. But this isn’t an expensive hotel, this is a hostel, and in my opinion it’s the best one I’ve been at to date. The reason is simple, it’s got an amazing atmosphere, great vibes, amazing people, and a friendly owner who hates when people mess up his recycling lol. The owner actually supplies heaps of spices for the kitchen, there’s tons of baked goods available all the time, and there’s tacky art work all over the place that makes it feel like a home. It’s right next to downtown on top of a hill, has a great garden, two stone mosaic barbecues, and a massive kitchen. And the best part is... ITS CLEAN! Which is quite uncommon in lots of hostels. It’s not a party hostel, but it’s a great place to kick back on the weekend, have a few beers, and maybe play some flunkyball!

this is one of the most unique and friendly hostels I've ever been to. The furniture and duvets are really quirky. The room sizes vary from double to five bed dorms. The hostel offers a lot of free stuff: pies at pie time, big breakfast with rolls, jam, honey and different cereals, and herbs, sugar tea, coffee all day long. The garden is very green and lush and from the big balcony you have an awesome view over the city and the ocean. the stuff is friendly and there are two lovely hostel cats.

My favorite hostel I've been to in all of New Zealand, the staff are very friendly and very helpful. It is so easy to make friends here. The facilities are very nice and I loved the walls bedecked with art. They serve you breakfast and enough doughnuts and sandwichs for a decent lunch as well. Fast unlimited WiFi too!
The garden is beautiful and emits a vibe of calm that you won't want to leave. Love it here.

I'd give it 5 stars, except for the whole 5 star thing for hotels. For a backpacker it might be. The down side is the community bathroom and showers and the rooms can be jam packed with beds. We stayed here during the 7.9 earthquake and amazingly with all the stuff they have hanging all over the walls.... nothing fell down. Shook us out of bed though. And the staff was well prepared and professional. Nice patio overlooking Nelson where you can sit out and have wireless, have a smoke and drink some wine and watch the town.
L.
One of my favourite hostels in all of NZ. Beautiful area views and well developed green space. No bunks in my room, just single beds. Excellent fast internet with no access portals or expiring code nonsense.
S.
The room was huge and comfortable. Bathrooms were good, but could have used more pressure in the showers. The parking lot was a struggle. Breakfast is basic, but for the price it is good value!
T.
Best hostel in Nelson!
stayed there for 3 nights. The FREE breakfast and afternoon tea are great.
The staff is friendly and nice.
Had the time of my life, and for such small amount of money!
R.
Amazing atmosphere and friendly folk the rooms are so awesome and I enjoy the character of an old building rather than your modern minimalist layout... Will keep in mind for next time as well

This hostel is very close to Nelsons main shopping street and supermarkets as well as restaurants and OP-shops. The hostel has two different houses both charming old wooden villas. The furniture is a colorful mix of all sorts of different furniture. The room sizes vary between double bed and five bed dorms. None of them has bunk beds. Some of the rooms have an nice oean view, other look out to the lush garden or to the mountains. The hostel offers a lot of free stuff like free breakfast in the morning with free range eggs from the hostel chickens, free pies and pastry for afternoon tea, and herbs, sugar, tea and real coffee all day long. The houses are surrounded by a lush garden and there are lots of possibilities to relax: comfy garden chairs, hammocks and the lovely big balcony with sofas. There is a Tv room, a spa and a smoko shed. Every wednesday is a BBQ where everyone brings something and everybody then simply shares. A great opportunity to get to know other hostel guest and socialise.

Great spot near centre only found one better hostel but would recommend either. So stay here and feel happy. Good garden too and friendly staff
r.
Great place! Little closer to the city, but not actually in the main area which is great! It's a cool old building with a lovely and lively atmosphere. The staff is really nice and the rooms are clean.
J.
Free wifi(note only in main building), reasonable priced, free breakfast, complimentary tea and coffee compared with other hostels. They have a garden to sit in, the beds are slightly uncomfortable. Decorated with wooden furniture
א.
Awesome hostel with a great atmasphere, has a special design, breakfast and Wi-Fi for free and no bunks beds, just regular ones
Very friendly and welcoming! We had a great time staying in this hostel
e.
Had a really great stay! The staff are super friendly and helpful and my room was cosy! The WiFi was great and the free breakfast was really convenient.

The palace is a beautiful hostel to stay at, it's very central and includes free breakfast, WiFi and afternoon treats! It is also the first hostel I have come across with no bunk beds.
G.
Facilities r great I felt like I'm in the big old house but the owner's behavior is really terrible... n has dirty mouse -_- That's really deal breaker.. n Wifi condition is really not good :( I often went to the library coz of that..
M.
The hostel is an old house. The staff is nice, and kitchen is very clean and big. The problem is that if you are going in winter the hostel is very cold
G.
Very friendly. Great location. Clean facilities. Spacious room. Good layout.

Cosy and warm with a very welcoming atmosphere . Breakfast was average, but the proximity to the centre of Nelson is worth it!!

Amazing place. Loved it there and met my future wife. If you're passing through make sure you stay there. You'll love it.

(Translated) No luxury but incredibly comfortable. Beautiful grown with trees, plants and flowers villa, lovingly decorated. Somewhat older, which did not bother us at all. Breakfast is included, coffee is available throughout the day and you can also enjoy a few leftovers from a bakery. Thanks to Dave the owner, that we could stay longer, we really did come down, it was nice to chat with you and also thanks to Joe, who always has an open ear. All the best for you, it was just beautiful.

(Translated) Cozy place with friendly staff. Is there anything that is needed, for example, kitchen and washing machine. A little cold on the floors only.
(Original)
