C.Stayed for two nights just prior to New Years as a base for a tramping trip.
This is an outstanding hostel that I would highly recommend. Rooms are good quality and the showers are excellent. Check in/ check out was seamless and the owner allowed us to store our bags at the hostel after we checked out while we did an overnighter in the National Park.
Handily the hostel also runs a shuttle service to cater to your various tramping needs.

But what a cool place! It’s super chill and easy. Very clean and the guy that works here was nice. Rooms, shower and common areas were clean (always) and the location is so close to town like a 5min walk

A.We stayed at this hostel as a group of friends.
From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed and relaxed here.
Brett let us check in early as we had just come off the mountain and were in need of a hot shower.
The rooms, bathrooms and common space are clean, comfortable and well equipped.
The decor is vibrant and varied amongst flowing and spacious common areas that enable guests to mingle.
We felt this hostel offered good value for money too.
Very highly recommended - we would definitely stay again.
D.The hostel is so nice and cozy, well decorated, close to town. Paula at reception was super nice and she showed me around. I was very surprised with a dog greeting me his name was zulu, OMG how much more can you ask for in hostel, I would definitely recommend it!
E.I needed a place to stay before hiking up Mount Taranaki and they were able to accommodate on short notice. I was pleased as soon as I arrived: plenty of free parking on the street, great location, and nicely appointed and ample space.
The owner, Brett, was very kind, welcoming, helpful and relaxed and there are two lovely dogs. Bed was comfortable, water for showers was hot and there's even a sauna I didn't have time to try out.

The only issue was parking. You will have to park on the street if there is no space available in the inside car park.

E.We cannot praise this establishment enough. Owned and operated by an energetic couple, we found the grounds exciting and vibrant. Great atmosphere, friendly accomodating people, cute rooms. Communal areas were 👌👌👌. Loved their greeter Zulu, such a sweet pup. Funky, quirky, loved everything about this place! Couldn't be more wholesome. Thanks for being such an inspiration Brett & Paula!

M.Not your standards backpackers! Sure, there are bunk beds, but the amount of shared breakout rooms and spaces, the cleanliness and amount of facilities, and the friendliness of the staff and owners makes it feel luxurious and special! Fantastic for our group of 20.
A.Beautiful place. Awesome owners. Cute doggos. Great central location. Stayed in a 4 bed dorm. They also provide private rooms and cottages. Clean, extra blankets, heater provided. Very aware of saftey procedures for covid19. Big lounge area with fire place. 100% recommend.
H.The staff are so lovely, including the very well trained border collies that roam the grounds! The room had everything you need, the whole complex was very clean and tidy. I would definitely feel comfortable staying here again.

S.Its an okay hostel. Its about a 15 min walk from the bus stop. It was clean for the most part, the room was a little musty. The dogs they keep are cute. the showers in the bathrooms are small. The owner is strange, he can be observed walking around the hostel cursing to himself. And is only polite to young female backpackers. Its close to the grocery store.
M.We stayed here on the 22 of July 2017 and had such a lovely time. The accommodation we booked was the cottage with it's own bathroom and facilities. The room was well presented and very clean. The staff were friendly I would definitely recommend Ducks and Drakes to my family and friends in the future.
S.Rooms, kitchen and communal areas are nice and tidy. Good looking decor. Has some selection of board games. Towels weren't too good so I'd recommend bringing your own. Otherwise pleasant stay.
A.Made a good base for us to do a walk on mt taranaki and fairly comfortable on the whole. Nice dining area, lounge and border collies, but the kitchen is a little untidy. Our triple room was a bit on the small side and rather shabby- lots of cobwebs, dust and we had to ask for pillow cases. The hostel and rooms are colourful and inviting but I guess you could say it looks a little 'dishevelled' and 'scruffy' and in need of some updating.
C.Brett, the owner, was super helpful and accommodating. Fetch us from airport and shuttling us to and from our tramp. Nothing too much trouble. Room 13 was lovely and airy overlooking garden. Shared bathroom recently renovated.

C.One of my favorite hostels in all of New Zealand. Quirky, comfortable, homey, and clean. The owners give a lot of care to their guests and the hostel itself, so it's easy to feel spoiled and looked after. Also, a sauna and fast internet! I'll be back again.
J.Def go! You won't be disappointed. The hostel is in town but on a quiet road, the manager is a top guy, and the place is lovely with a slightly funky decor. They also offer the cheapest shuttle service to Mt. Egmont National Park.
M.Wow is all I can say. Ultimate comfort for sleeping, warm clean and welcoming the host is funny welcoming and bent over backwards to ensure we were happy and settled in well. The place is funky clean and the building is amazing. Excellent location with a choice of rooms for all budgets and needs. Will defenitley return - even if its just to experience the comedic welcome and check in. A BBH that any owner should aspire to. Well done ducksndrakes you rock.
R.An absolutely fantastic hostel in New Plymouth located right beside all the supermarkets. The facilities are all clean and excellent. The beds are comfy, bathrooms big and clean. The kitchen is huge with every utensil you ever want. There is a big tv with Sky, free WiFi which is usually pretty quick and a ton of common areas both indoors and outdoors to sit, relax, chat, read or whatever.
It's a mix of a backpackers hostel which is what I did and motel with individual units. This led to a really great mix of people that you don't normally get. I always stay at backpackers and it's usually full of 20 and 30 something German English, Americans etc but the first time I stayed here there was a family of 3 generations who was staying here and great to talk to them. I don't normally see that.
It's a member of BBH family so if you have BBH card you get $4 off which as well as everything I mentioned above means it's also fantastic value.
I can't recommend staying here enough if you visiting New Plymouth and/or climbing Taranaki like I was.
F.Basic overs, but has friendly staff. Could use more practical bathrooms and any extractor fan in the kitchen so the smells don't flood the rooms. Overpriced for what it is, but has everything you need and good kitchen, cozy lounge and warm fire.
E.Fantastic motel/backpacker accommodation! Everything is very clean and bright and comfortable! The owners are lovely people and the location is great! I highly recommend staying here if you're in New Plymouth.

A.The owners are friendly and helpful, there's a relaxed atmosphere, funky artwork, new comfortable mattresses, towels...in winter a log fire in the lounge, often a group playing board games or someone jamming quietly on a guitar. My favourite place to stay.

H.I have been staying at this place for years and I keep coming back because the people that run this clean, tidy, value for money place are hospitality exemplars. I come for WOMAD and the location is perfect. I hire a bike from here to get around New Plymouth before WOMAD starts and make the most of being in this neat city. Ducks and Drakes really support you in exploring Taranaki by being consistently reliable, friendly and organised. They communicate expectations around what is expected when you stay here which is how I like it. They are good guardians of a clean and restful place to stay. I wouldn't go anywhere else.

J.Walking distance to town. The good places anyway: such as Shining Peak Brewing, Mike's, Ms Whites and Monica's Eatery the next morning for great Kokako Coffee.
I've stayed 3-4 times to break the trip up between Akl and Wlg.
P.What an awesome place. We had a group of 16 stay in the cottages. Had a great time with great hosts & service. Would highly recomend to anyone whether a group or Individuals.
