M.The staff work from day till night cleaning the bathrooms and kitchen, so you can be assured that this place is indeed well maintained, clean and tidy. We love the spacious kitchen (equipped with hot stoves for cooking, microwave, pots and pans and hot water). They provide cutlery and plates as well.
The hot pool is a great way to spend the evening, and the Backyard is a great place to relax. Will recommend this place for its lodges and chalet!
C.This place was great, very chill and relaxed. I checked in and the staff were really helpful, advised my 4 bed dorm wad just me for the 1 night - woo!! The showers were decent and clean, the decor a little dates but they were updating as i was there so thats cool. Really friendly staff also, i got all my meals here and they were great. The breakfast was amazing and you even get eggs and bacon with it also so you get well set up for your day. They have a fantastic thermal pool - amazing after a long days hike. The next morning i had to check out earlier than expected and they kindly refunded my breakfast that i wouldn't have had time to eat. That was really nice, i feel these guys went above and beyond what i expected and thats always fantastic to experience. Thank you.
T.Lovely staff, tidy enough rooms.. Everything you need bedding wise but wasn't vacuumed behind the beds. Floors upstairs in our room were so squeaky, as were the upstairs walkways to the bathrooms. Food wasn't amazing but priced to reflect this.. Overall beautiful place to stay, wouldn't expect too much more from a backpackers!
J.Seems like a good place for groups, backpackers, and youngsters looking to save money on lodging. Friendly staff were willing to accommodate our requests. Food was fair. Chicken casserole and rice for dinner was a bit bland, and breakfast (eggs, meat, toast, cereal, yogurt, etc.) was pretty average. Rooms and linens were clean. A few people in our group visited the bar there and said it was comfortable.
H.I had such a great stay at the Backyard Inn. The communal bathrooms were clean but I do think they need renovated. There was a very nice man who was locking but he kept everything open a bit later so we could do finish cooking our dinner. He was so kind. The reception staff were friendly. The lady that cooked our breakfast made it look and taste AMAZING. The pool was a nice way to start my day. My overall stay was very enjoyable!!!
A.Needs a little fridge in rooms, pool to stay open till late. Car parks there needs to be more so everyone gets one. Beds are super comfy, staff very accommodating an friendly. Would recommend this place to others.
N.Been here for a work function for the last two years. The catering was mostly good. The cooks were friendly and polite. The accommodation is cheap, but not a fan of the thin walls, but bedding and everything else is decent. The place had obviously been there for a while but they've recently added new carpet in the conference room. And it had a hot pool! It's a popular place with sports teams and bigger groups.
K.Lovely staff. Full size kitchen with good number of kitchen appliances where many people can cook at the same time. Lovely hot pool perfect for the cold night. Toilets and room are clean. Value for money

F.A really nice motel! The swimming pool is the absolute Highlight of this place. It's naturally hot (hot springs) but is sadly just opened till 10pm.
The rooms are pretty big and have really comfortable beds.
The location is also really good: 2mins walk to a little park with rugby field and you're also fast in the little village.
J.Clean but very small. Would have earned an extra star if the rooms had fans or a/c . The windows only open about an inch and it gets so very hot in those rooms.
Venue and facilitys are quite old and dated. Do not expect the promo photos to mirror life, rose colored glasses to be sure.
Staff where quite nice however and cafe isn't bad.
It was a bed in a room that was a place to leave our stuff, probably wouldn't stay again tho.
B.Stayed in the 5 then 4-bed dorms and had the place to myself. Love the space, not cramped like other hostels and they have a cafe/resto, dessert place onsite. They also clean up good (vacuum regularly, sheets changed and kept properly, not left on the floor like in other places). Staff are well-trained and great overall. The place is a short walk from the city center and some rooms have a view of the park next to it which is nice. Will definitely come back when I'm in Rotorua.
C.I take my hat off to Backyard Inn. We had over 50 people stay with them and the service was awesome (they make you feel so welcomed) and the rooms were great.
We did a group booking and they were very helpful and understanding, especially when we changed a few days before our stay.
We didn't have any problems with our stay and everything they have on there website is as stated especially there pool (our players loved it).
The food was beautiful and you will not be disapointed with any option you choose.
It is a walking distance to the shops and there town center. They also have a cafe and a bar within the premises.
Not a bad place to stay with when you look at the prices they offer.
Thank you Backyard Inn, we look forward to seeing you all again next year.

You get your kitchen and communal shower. Hot water and strong pressure as well, though the bathroom's light is a bit too dim at night.
J.Actually love this place. Yes, it's basic but if you've gone for budget how can you complain? No issues with cleanliness, the staff were all really helpful and the breakfasts were absolutely delicious! We used the kitchen and it had everything we needed to rustle up a dinner. Fantastic location, especially when you take the price into consideration. Will be back later in the year (because Rotorua is just too good for only one weekend!). Thanks guys for a great stay.
A.We used this as a stopover as we wanted a break from sleeping in tents for a night. Staff were really friendly and lovely but that's where it ends. Tiny rooms with creaky floorboards - we were luckily on the top floor so this didn't affect us but must have been hell for anyone below us. Bathrooms were clean but the kitchen area was disgusting. Mould on curtains and broken, old furniture in rooms. Pool didn't look clean at all so we gave it a miss and opted to pay $8 for the pool and spa next door at the aquatic centre. Parking was difficult in evenings. Fine for a stopover but wouldn't recommend for a longer stay unless you're on a serious budget!

P.Pretty good, really. I would definitely recommend this place. Would come back to stay on this place next time I visit Rotorua. Very clean place. Warm and cozy - it changed my opinion of rooms with wooden walls. The staff were friendly and flexible. We woke up with a nice sunny day and their lounge amplified a wonderful country vibe. Not a vibe you get in concreted building type motels. So it was really wonderful. They serve great breakfast food too.
However, they might need to add more routers. The internet did not reach our room. We were at Chalet 21. As you may already know, it is important to stay connected. The door needed a "trick" to open. My wife and I found it amusing but that door would have given a different impression to an impatient customer.
We will definitely go back here. Highly recommended.
M.I liked this place. We stayed in private cabins. There was a lot of space inside. Good showers. Common kitchen well equiped. Nice hot pool - the area around rooms green and good to chill. Good value for the money you pay.
A.Good location. Great variety of rooms and accommodation styles. Very welcome roaring fire. Blimmin' FANTASTIC value for money DELICIOUS chicken burger and chips. Helpful and friendly staff. Would be pleased to stay there again
C.Awesome place for sports teams or school groups. Staff were super helpful and our boys loved all extras like pool tables and retro games. Will definitely stay there again. Only thing I would add is Aircon in the rooms although they were very breezy.
P.Value for the money. I only stay for one night, the room is clean, we need to arrange the bed cover for ourselves. There's a table and a chair. It's great if you need a place to read or working on your Laptop. The shared bathroom and toilet is clean.
J.Stayed here in the new year. Was great for my mate and I for a few nights. Got it's own restaurant and bar, thermal pool and staff are great. Its close to places such as the Luge, Kmart and Kuirau Park. Would stay here again if I was to go to Rotorua!
G.We loved this resort. We stayed here for three nights, in a tent on their camping site!
Check in was easy, they helped us store our luggage while it rained and they were all round very helpful!
The facilities here were incredible; clean shower block, heated pool, cafe, bar, sheltered outdoor seating, huge common room, massive kitchen equipped with everything, pool tables, and even a games console!
The best thing about this place for us was that the camping price was so cheap, but we still had access to all these facilities!
My only negative, and it can’t really be helped, is that the ground beneath us on the tent pitch was hard mud, and therefore not absorb the of water, Neither was the ground particularly level. When it rained overnight, we awoke to a layer of water underneath our tent because it had not sunk into the ground! We were not wet within the sleeping area of the tent, but everything outside in the small communal area was; the unlevel ground did not help!
L.Best accomodation we had in Rotorua. The staff are friendly and its accessible to the tourist spots in town. We stayed here for two nights and one thing that bothers me though is you have to for the wifi connection for NZ $5 but its not really that a big deal...They have a cafe where they serve meals and good coffee; they also have a bean-shaped pool outdoor.
R.GREAT stay!! Expected not much for around $50 a night, but with amenities and location within walking distance of most things. Plus any taxi's to attractions were also cheap.
I will be back here to stay when in Rotorua next year, staff were friendly and very informative.

J.Budget accommodation. The room did the job, shower / toilets block was clean.
Was full of school trips when we was there so kitchen area was very busy. Bar area was nice.
J.I spent 2 night in my camper van and the place is ok. Shared shower/toilet (good hot water with strong pressure), shared kitchen and laundry. All of those for $20 a night ( no electricity). The premises are old and the cleanliness is ok (could be better).
S.Good value accommodation just alongside the geothermal activity of Kuirau Park, and about a 10 minute stroll into the centre of town. We really liked our private twin room and the restaurant, although the shared facilities feel a lot more fun down and dated - hopefully they will be updated soon.
The pool was very warm and so lovely for soaking in after a busy day. Finally, reception has some fantastic deals on local activities, such as the unmissable Kaituna Cascades whitewater rafting at just $49!
Some irritating negatives: the bed in the private rooms have free-wheeling legs and so you cannot sit up in bed without the bed rolling away from the wall. Also the showerhead was more like a hose rather than something which spread the water out across your body. Finally the wifi which we paid for at check in cannot be picked up in the private rooms!! Three easy fixes for management to arrange.

K.Awesome and very accommodating staff. The management- Dylan and his lovely partner are very friendly and very nice. The cook offers a tasty food menu. The chalet are cosy. Worth the stay when your on holiday.
W.A cheap place with good kitchen and shower facilities if you're looking for a stopover in Rotorua. Less of a hotel and more of a glorified hostel, but does the job. Wouldn't stay here for more than a couple of nights.
L.Nice campsite, big kitchen and overall pretty clean, shame that hot water didn't work , they said it's something to do with geothermal activity so maybe better check before you book, also have a swimming pool which is supposed to be warm as well
B.The heater in the room is quite good. However, the hot water for showering is not enough for me and the socket is not enough for me and my friends to use. There is only one socket in a 4-people room.

H.Clean helpful friendly efficient guest service. Love the hot pool and barbeques. Casual relaxed and open areas. Outdoor indoor dining with restaurant and bar facilities. Laundry facilities with clean showers and abolution blocks. Gardens and greenery gives a bush feel with native birds. A range of budget dorm and lodges on offer. Lots of parking with a few minutes walk to CBD. Close to weekend markets with parks and aquatic centre around the corner. Overall highly recommend accommodation to friends and colleagues abroad. Bistro mesls cooked on site. I love it here this been my second stay while on business.
R.Rooms are really basic and the pool is not nearly as nice as the picture makes it look. However the common areas are well maintained, clean, and comfortable.

k.Generally a good place to stay for large groups but it can get pretty noisy at night. I liked how the rooms were nice and warm though and showers were nice and hot

K.It's a very small camping ground, but it has everything you need. The giant shared kitchen is stocked with plenty of cooking utensils if you don't have any of your own.

P.Everything you need for budget travelling - fridges, kitchen and a bed. Close to the centre of Rotorua and only a 20-30 minutes ride from the Whakarewarewa Forest MTB trails.
There are motorhome/camping spots on site and car parking spaces for each room.
M.Wasn't that good. We payed for the internet but could barely use it in our room because the signal was to weak. The public rooms need some repairs and sadly the pool was more green than blue.
S.Highly recommend The Backyard Inn had an awesome experience with my family very happy with the accommodation and very affordable. The staff were all polite and accommodating to our family I would rate this particular experience a 10/10

C.Very friendly and extremely helpful staff..geo thermal pool was a hit...40Celsius steaming hot....all your body fat Melts...Clean and well maintained...only the pillow is too thin near at least two of them for a good sleep...heating in rooms were great..but you have to pay 5 bucks for wifi😢😢 around 15 minute walk to town through the play ground if you take the back exit.

F.Affordable, but it's really outdated, and not in the best conditions (kitchen, toilets and showers should be renovated asap). I had planned to stay 2 nights, but in the end I stayed just one.
C.Good cheap stay. The shared bathrooms are well looked after, but the upstairs floorboards are considerably creaky for the downstairs rooms.

I.A fairly standard Inn, located quite centrally to most places in Rotorua. It has decent sized rooms and is quite clean.

t.(Translated) New Year's Day and my family temporarily decided to stay one night in Rotorua. We camped with a tent. The camper camping is OK. The tent is not suitable, the location is small, and it is a bit crowded. The campsite has a hot water pool, which is not bad. It closes at 10pm. The public toilets are a bit small, there are only three compartments for bathing and they need to line up. But the price is reasonable, 25 / person.
