A.Has a very homely feel as soon as you walk in. Really cool communal vibe and very friendly staff. Owner Dave is a really helpful and knowledgeable guy too, has a lot of info on local attractions and hikes in the area. Rooms are nice and spacious and kitchen has good utensils etc. Highly recommend giving this place a stay!
N.Made use of their daytime special - $10 to use their facilities and common rooms for a day, what a bargain. Cozy hostel, the friendly owner gave us a little tour. If I ever travel without my van I‘ll stay here, highly recommended. They even have sharp knives in their kitchen and we know how rare those are in hostel kitchens.
K.Honestly a fantastic hostel. Please do yourself a favour and stay here if traveling through Wanaka. Helpful/friendly staff, amazing shower, clean rooms, cool decor (love the rock climbing gear for door handles) and a great location close to town, all for a bargain price!
W.If you want fresh beautiful water to drink walk past “the moorings Wanaka” on lakeside road and you’ll see a water pipe with a plaque saying fresh spring water. Drink it! Yummy n free.
I had same room as CMW review below, see photos…room did seem a bit small for price, the aircon in reception is nice and the host Ana was very helpful. Facilities were in good order. Only 5 minutes walk to lake front.

feels like home away from home, super friendly staff, lots of space for food storage and personal storage, great high pressure showers, awesome kitchen space with heaps of utensils, massive range of movies on the TV. And lots of parking. Stay here !
C.Overprice for a small room, lack of shelf/cabinet to put items/bags but have multiple power plugs. Free Wi-Fi & beverages, storage box area for food available. It has a strategic location to walk down to town (avoid hard times to find a parking space). Clean bathroom and toilet, very powerful shower which is relaxing. Corridor is a bit cold, small kitchen is close to corridor, hence obvious smell of smoke when many are cooking at meal times. Reception lady is helpful and provide ideas of good food options.

M.This is a really super hostel! Stopped here for 2 nights during my Te Araroa hike and they even have a dedicated TA hikers room. Great value, super friendly staff and lovely facilities 👍🏽
P.This backpacker is perfect. Room, kitchen and toilets are good & clean. The laundry place is outside but is okay, there is place to dry the clothes. The management team in very kindly also. I have a real good moment in this backpack.

D.Nice beds and kitchen. Free tea and coffee and well equipped. Lots of communal space. Only let down by WiFi which isn't great and is limited. And also there is a lot of space in the rooms themselves. My 8 bed dorm was very cramped. Everything else was good though. Staff were lovely.
M.Nice little place. The kitchen is not that big but you have what you need to cook and space in the freezer. The tables outside and hanging bed make it very nice to eat or chill out.
The shared room inside is a bit less comfortable because of the tv, you cannot talk easily with other people.
The room was nice as the showers and toilets.
C.Nice hostel with a very friendly staff. It was quite clean. The kitchen is quite small and not well stocked. Even with 4-5 people cooking it was hard to move around. The outdoor patio is nice for eating but is often filled with smokers. With such a small eating space they should have more room outside that is t available for smoking.
R.As other reviewers have suggested this is broadly a nice place with decent facilities but it is very cramped and has a weird layout. My biggest complaint is not enough seating areas to eat when it's raining and or cold. I still recommend it but do keep this in mind.
D.Small and clean hostel. The kitchen gets crowded at meal times but there is an herb garden for cooking. Wifi is decent but you get a capacity limit. You can buy more really cheaply. It's fairly close to everything in town as well. The beds aren't the best, but they are fine for the price. There are also private and double rooms available with nicer beds

L.A simple, home away from home. They've all the necessities. Kitchen, fridge, food storage, bikes for rent. Perfect location. Unlimited tea and coffee. Helpful staff.
F.Cute small place that has everything you'd need. The private double bed room is only separated by a thin plasterboard wall from a dorm room so it's not the most private thing but it's not at all bad. Maybe a little expensive for what you get (for the double). No major quarms but also nothing amazing. Would recommend
T.The Hostel was good; clean beds, good showers and a decent kitchen. Additionally there was a nice outside area, with hammocks and picknick tables. However, the wifi was horrible. It didn't work at all. Being a backpacker, I had to book accomodation, activities and transport in advance. Which I was not able to do at the hostel.

A.Really cool and chilled out hostel. Nice rooms with friendly staff, a good kitchen and nice outdoor common area. Close enough to walk to town easily. Good wifi and fairly cheap. The only way it could be improved is if the wifi was less limited - we had some admin to do and while 1GB of wifi sounds like a lot it goes pretty quickly! So this was slightly frustrating but shouldn't take away from a really nice hostel with a cool vibe. Definitely recommended when in Wanaka!
L.We happened on this hostel by chance and it turned out all right. I enjoyed the bed layouts in the dorms. Each bed has its own recess with a reading lamp; power outlet and curtain as not to disturb or be disturbed by your roommates coming or going.
The outside seating area is quite nice (weather permitted). But the lounge is where all the guests ended up either watching a movie or keeping busy on their devices, because WiFi reception in the rooms were very limited.
Notes circa March 2017:

• There's a $10 deposit for the key
• There's a $50 fine for unwashed dirty dishes
T.Space is limited and so is the wifi, but the living spaces are comfortable and it's kept clean.

C.High ceilings make the room feel bigger but actually the 6 bed dorm still felt a little crampt. That aside the mattresses were comfy and the kitchen just about big enough. In winter with everyone indoors meant that there was nowhere to actually eat out food because the table was taken up by many people. Showers are hot and spacious. There were lockers in the rooms.

E.From the moment I entered Flying Kiwi, it was undeniable that the owner, Dave has a sincere passion for his place. His attention to detail to make every part of the hostel unique and meaningful is remarkable and he and Nick are extremely kind and welcoming. I felt at home immediately. There are fantastic showers and plenty of bathroom facilities so no waiting. There are fresh herbs to pick in the courtyard that has 3 hammocks and a view of Roy's Peak. Couldn't imagine a better experience.

C.I was coming through Wanaka on my bike, I had to stop somewhere. Found this backpacker, the only one with availability. Staff really welcoming, overall, really clean place, good selection of movies to chill, good people to meet. I met the owner, he let me used his tools to fix my bike, really felt like at home. From two weeks, I stayed 4 months there.. highly recommended!
