Used to be a 5 star hotel; dropping fast to a 3.
No in-room coffee machine; kettle and instant coffee a 1970’s offering!
All staff unaware of kids eat free promo; from check in to check out I had to explain what the conditions were.
Understaffed; phone not answered when ordering room service and no concierge.
No umbrellas available for temp use.
Food was good but expensive.
Updated rooms were good though; bathroom and main sleeping area were well appointed.

We had an awesome stay at James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor in Wellington. It's accessible location to the CBD as well as large rooms and amenities makes it an ideal hotel to stay during our visits in Wellington! Will definitely be back in the future!
Two things that needed improvements were the quality of the beds provided and staff at the breakfast buffet which kept asking if we wanted to remove our plates (which got pretty annoying by the end of our stay).
D.
Receptionist Roshab was super welcoming and made check in STRESS FREE for our family. Rooms were nice and comfortable. Such friendly and helpful staff, house keeping was prompt and ready. Thank you for making our Wellington stay a blast. Stay safe team you are all doing an amazing job during the Wellington convoy protest as well :)
B.
Amazing staff and rooms, great location and great housekeepers. Check-in was easy and we were allowed to put some bags in the hotel hours before we were meant to check in. We had a fire alarm go off but staff were professional and gave out free slippers (I still have mine!) 5 out of 5!
N.
Receptionist was a little off on arrival. Just felt like the issue we had was a little annoying to sort. It was sorted in the end but definitely ruined the "Holiday Spirit" Housekeeping were awesome. Very attentive if you need anything like towels etc they are more than happy to help . Clean hotel. Everything you need in the room. On check out (different receptionist) was very helpful. Bags can be left to hold after check out as my flight was not till later that afternoon which was a nice touch and left a mostly positive feeling about the stay.
B.
What a lovely hotel! Clean modern and super comfortable rooms, outstanding and very welcoming customer service.
The hotel is located in the heart of the CBD, just walking distance to most attractions. The beds are extremely comfortable and the facilities are perfect.
Highly recommended, will definitely stay again!
B.
Lovely hotel in the heart of the CBD.
Easy to find off the motorway, and easy to get out to visit other areas or go north.
Lifts down to Lambton Quay and shops/cafes.
Very reasonable room rates, especially for the an Executive King room.
A pity that a lot of noise came through the door from the corridor (ok, it was New Year's eve).
It's now our first choice of accommodation in Wellington.
R.
Great place to stay 😁 clean tidy rooms. and the staff were absolutely outstanding the service brilliant food really good, we had lovely time in Wellington
G.
Our stay was great!! Comfortable bed, clean room and bathroom. Spacious and quiet. Jackie J was able to get us into the room early, as our flight arrived at 8am. Jackie J, Cassie and the team made our stay flawless and being on floor 25 was awesome with great rooms!! One night left and could stay here for many more!

Oh my goodness where do I start. The staff needs more training.no greeting.the girl on reception said "you checking in" .no hello or good afternoon.she told us we had to pay an extra $100 per night. When I asked her why that much, all she said was you will get it back.but I tried to tell her that was cutting into our holiday spending money.she didn't make any comment.just shrugged her shoulders.she didn't care. Also your bar staff needs to find out how to make a gin and tonic.she used a half pint beer glass, then filled it up with tonic to the top.instead of asking if I wanted the tonic separate.we have used James Cook hotel many times. This experience has been very disappointing. If I was a hotel inspector, you would be loosing a star. Rude staff, need more training.

This hotel is at a great location between the Terrace and Lambton Quay. Both check-in and check-out were smooth with the front desk staff doing their job efficiently. The room was pretty spacious and gave us a nice view of the Terrace. Housekeeping did a good job and the elderly gentleman working in housekeeping was friendly. By using one set of elevators from the lobby, it was easy to get to Lambton Quay.
t.
An awesome little hotel marred by what must have been young, pretty untrained staff. They just seem to know how to just push all the wrong buttons. Time to sort out your issues else we won't be back in a hurry
A.
Impeccable service! New refurbished rooms were very nicely done and the harbour view from the room was great. Beyond a doubt it’s the staff in both the restaurant and hotel that make this place great.
B.
I enjoyed staying here. Food was impressive and so was the price for what we got! The rooms were comfortable and welcoming! I hope you get the chance kids or not its a relaxing stay that anyone will enjoy.
A.
James Cook is nice and all but the family suit rooms need abit of an upgrade!! Sadly with covid we had no buffet service they only told me upon arrival this information could be shared upon booking online for future please.
R.
Lovely place to stay. Friendly staff and close to the city. Would highly recomend
B.
Ate at Whitby Restaurant. All 5 of us totally enjoyed our meals. Service was good too.
S.
Stayed 4 nights in King suite with harbour view access & Buffet Breakfast included.
Checked in early & were allowed access to Harbour view lounge whilst waiting for room to be ready.
Room was ready before 12pm.
Very impressed by fabulous views from the lounge & also from our room.
Huge King size bed in the room but thought the couch & chairs could have been a little bit more comfortable but no big deal.
Harbour view lounge had coffee maker can's of fizzy, selection of juices, selection of nuts, marshmallows & cookies.
Buffet breakfast in Whitbys was OK has cooking station for poached eggs, omelette & pancakes.
Our last night we thoroughly enjoyed the dinner buffet, the Chefs really nailed it, the meat dishes were cooked to perfection & vegetables done al denta.
Lambton Quay awesome location, so close to water front for a walk on a lovely day & also convenient to Courtenay Place for many dinning options.
Highly reccomend Majestic Cusine, Indian alley K.C Cafe & takeaway for the best roast duck ever
D.
Best things about the place - Great location! So easy to catch public transport and close to heaps of places, tourist attraction and shops. Really good how there were two entrances to the hotel, one on The Terrace and one on Lambton Quay. Friendly service, beds and pillows are so comfortable, buffet breakfast was a definite highlight. The room was also very clean. Check in and check out was a breeze - nice we could check in early as our room was ready. During check out, we could store our luggage at reception as well which was helpful as we were still exploring and had a late flight. Juan was nice to deal with at reception and that was both during check in and check out.
Things that weren't so amazing - dinner menu in Whitby's is pretty average, we had the burger and there was no sauce on it at all which made it a bit dry to eat (but the chips it came with were amazing), our room wasn't very sound proof - you can hear people outside in the corridor and in the rooms next door as well. The bins provided didn't have bags/liners in them and we found the bathrooms a little dated.
M.
We enjoyed a lovely High Tea. Nice views from the Cafe, which is located at level 17. Staff was very friendly and came back frequently to offer more tea.
A.
Could not get through to Whitbys on phone reception tried ,no help.Went for meal very limited menu ,tasty If somewhat slow service .
Pricy and parking a killer $16 to park .
K.
Great place to stay, although the room check when you check out needs to be made clear as it can take time.
S.
I joined my friend staying in the hotel for breakfast around 8am and was served by one of your workers Ali. We was greatly impressed by the service and PR skills Ali provided. Super friendly and welcoming! Just proof that no matter how nice the furnishings or decor is, what really matters is the staff. Really really impressed with this young lady, absolute pleasure to talk with her.
c.
Great place to stay. All amenities close at hand. Central to most things.
S.
Very generously sized rooms, comfortable, quiet & clean, especially good as they are so central to everything. Impressed with the great service from the staff, especially enjoyed dining at Whitbys & the buffet breakfast I would come back for even if I was not staying there.
A.
Great to see James Cook supporting Forest and Bird with the custom toiletries. A worthy cause and very timely given F&B today winning a court case against MP Stuart Nash for putting commercial interests before the environment.
The hotel itself is nice, but I would cover back again for the environmentally friendly way the place is run.
J.
Great place to stay. 4*. Clean and friendly. Perfectly placed in Wellington CBD. We always enjoy our stay here.
Another fantastic stay this weekend. Everything was great despite the difficulties imposed by Covid. Lance and Rosey in Whitby's restaurant were awesome hosts as usual. We missed the buffet but the food was awesome anyway! Thanks guys.
M.
Stayed for our 10th wedding anniversary. Comfortable refurbished room. Friendly, helpful staff. Location is close to waterfront restaurants and bars. In-room wifi was good. We booked the Grand Occasion package from the hotel website which included a bottle of bubbly, buffet breakfast, parking and 1pm checkout.
The only negative was noise from people in the hallway in the middle of the night.
Loved it and we will be back!

We recently stayed atm James cook in Wellington after purchasing a deal from grab one. The parking building in right next door to the hotel so easy to get back to the car if needed. Check in was simple, even with the grab one deal. I spoke with Julian at the reception who was helpful and explained all the bonuses of our deal which included a food voucher and breakfast for the 2day stay. There was a man playing the piano when we came down from the car park which set a lovely tone to our first visit.
Our room was on the 26th floor in a new refurbished deluxe room. We had a welcome gift of chocolate and bliss balls which was a lovely touch. The room was a nice size with a king bed and great blackout curtains. The bathroom was spacious with a great selection of shampoos and body creams/face cleansers. The fan in the bathroom is constantly on, I’m unsure if this is normal and if it should be linked to the light but it was quite noticeable, less so with the door closed. My husband sleeps with a fan so the sound wasn’t an issue for us but it may be for others. The internet was great and we were able to cast our Netflix from our phone to the tv and it was fairly easy to achieve. The room was cosy and the bed comfortable, slightly softer than we are use to but no complaints. The only suggestion I have is that a mirror in the room itself would be helpful especially if you’re trying to have showers and get ready to go out at the same time.
Our package include access to the harbour view room which was on the same floor as our room and was a wonderful addition to our stay, the view was beautiful and the complimentary drinks, fruit and cookies were excellent.
At the end of the lobby there is a lift that takes you to the car park or down to Lambton Quay where you can find everything you need including a countdown supermarket just to the left of the walkway This was super convenient.
We used our food voucher by ordering room service and found the food to be delicious. Breakfast was at the Whitbys restaurant on the 17th floor, we had the full buffet and loved the fresh poached eggs, the view was also lovely even with the scaffolding up.
Check out was fast and without fuss and we left having had a wonderful couple of days. We will definitely stay again and happily recommend James Cook to friends.
H.
Our ferry from Picton arrived very late and we got to the hotel at 2am. The staff here were very gracious and helpful with a late check out and taking care of the car.
The room and facilities were great for the price. Very handy to the city
Thanks James Cook.
J.
Wonderful food, smorgasbord and great service. The piano player is the same, playing familiar tunes I remember him playing 30 years ago. I noticed the young staff being very kind to him ( he is blind). The dining room was in full swing, full of people having fun and enjoying the whole experience
G.
Pre wedding and wedding night accommodation in February of this year. Great rate given as a last minute choice. Have to give a review because the service was excellent and the wedding related touches were lovely. The view of Wellington are stunning from the top floors. The staff could not have been any more helpful. Deeptha in particular was marvelleous. Their buffet lunch formed the basis of our wedding reception. Again staff in the dining room were superb.
L.
A fantastic experience! Friendly staff, great accommodations and amazing food!
L.
On arrival we were greeted warmly and checked in several hours earlier than expected which was appreciated. The room was spotlessly clean and I would like to express particular thanks to the cleaning staff on level 25 ( Fiona) always singing and extremely helpful. Perfect location with great amenities. Highly recommended 😊
A.
Lovely receptionist👍..$30 for parking per night..plus $100 bond if you don't have a credit card. Elevator from hotel takes you straight to Lampton Quay👌(very handy as I am 8 months pregnant & have two kids) Comfortable beds..but room needs a upgrade..Dined in at the restaurant..5 stars for my meal..waiters were very polite..& they had a man playing the piano while you ate🤩
i.
james cook as a name is a lil strange. staff are swag tho
m.
long wait 2 book in, are in the upgraded room, very roomy and modern, please kill the carpet chooser... brown lines, not a good color and I've brought up other guests 2 take a look at da carpet... agreement
M.
Great service.
Josh at reception was EXCELLENT
Helped organise a shuttle and was very helpful
J.
Very good accommodation, great food and service.
J.
Awesome buffet breakfast, great variety and lovely food. Good rooms, clean and roomy enough. Staff very polite and friendly. Ideal central location. This will be my go to now, whenever going to Wellington
S.
Quick easy check in. Clear instructions on parking, lift to room etc. Room tidy and clean.
N.
perct location, perfect room service. Room is tidy and clean
L.
great food, and drinks, yummy chicken and corn soup and delicious roast broccoli ratatouille black pea, oyster mushrooms, balsamic reduction
J.
Love this hotel. Our 'go to' for when we are in Wellington. Booked again for September. Go with the deluxe suites so you get harbour lounge access.
C.
Amazing staff and room, clean, modern and easy to book!
N.
A grand old gentleman! Modern in the background but with all the features of olde world brass and wood in the forefront. The staff are friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. High tea was another unexpected pleasure, and you can definitely dress for it!
J.
Had a smorgasbord birthday.
Unfortunately the set up of seating and food was not good at all. Two different rooms with two way customer and staff doorway just a massive road block. Staff were trying hard but set up was against them.
Food a little underwhelming.
A.
Didn't stay at the hotel but went to thier buffet dinner and was not disappointed. With a wide variety of perfectly cooked meats, fresh seafood, vegetables and salads; we had no trouble filling our plates a few times! Not to mention the stacked desert cabinet. I would strongly suggest wearing loose fitting clothing if you decide to attempt this buffet, and my buttonless barkers chinos I purchased that same day are a testament to that.
The atmosphere was electric with live piano covers of Elton John, a full house and views of the city to boot.
At a price of 54 dollars per adult it is a tad pricey, but its not something you do everyday and is worth every penny. If you hate good food I would not recommend!
I.
Excellent front desk service, beautiful and tidy room, comfy beds. The Most impressive thing was the birthday treat from the hotel 🤩 Super happy with our stay!!! Highly recommended!!
D.
Comfortable bed, good shower, convenient & well appointed. Friendly staff & cleaners ensure you have everything you need.
Something for everyone on the menu in the in house Restaurant & a popular Piano bar for a quiet drink.
M.
was there for an event . Good.to see Akesh's influence on quality still holding up. Buffet was a good standard .
K.
The location is good for traveling city center. The service is also great.
F.
Friendly, helpful concierge. Excellent pillow service (came within 30 mins of ordering!) Good rate. Lovely lounge, foyer and bar downstairs.
Public areas and rooms a little tired.
R.
We travelled to Wellington and stayed here for a girls night out. The room was clean however, when I went to strip the linen at the end of our stay which is something I like to do as it seems a common courtesy to the housekeeping staff, considering I am a housekeeper myself. The pillows were filthy and there was a stain on the mattress protector. The yellow stains on the pillows are clearly from just being used too long as people are obviously sweating into the pillows when they sleep, but it was very gross to think I slept on that. I feel we payed for a hygienic stay and I don't think it fully lived up to that.
P.
Would try to look for another hotel when in Wellington again - was a good stay but no reason to come back here and not find one we were really pleased with. Rang room service to ask if the $10 eco vouchers you can acquire were valid for room service, they said yes, just to give them in at reception when checking-out and it will be taken off the price. Got to check-out, were told they weren't valid and were given the wrong information. Would've gone out for dinner had we not had these vouchers, so was a shame for our last night of the trip.
J.
Spent a night here with my partner, was a great stay with excellent rooms and lovely service. Breakfast buffet was fantastic. Will be coming back soon for sure.
J.
This place is very nice.
The staff are amazing, the location is convenient, the room is awesome and the overall experience at the buffet (both at breakfast and dinner) were marvelous.
There's only one problem I had with this place and it was to do with the air conditioning in the room that I was in. It didn't cool down the place very much. In the afternoon, the sun was beaming onto the side of the building where my room was. Shutting the curtains to block the light wasn't enough. I hoped the air con would provide relief but it was lack luster at best.
If you visit in late Autumn or Winter it will probably be a better experience 🥰
9/10

I liked this place because I booked at short notice and they bumped me to one of their flash rooms on the top floor. These rooms, and the service/goodies are fantastic.
I took one star off because next time I stayed I didn’t get a fancy room so I was a bit bummed out. Stayed two nights and I almost had a severe bout of depression. It’s not really very fair giving someone something nice then taking it away. Shame on you.
Once I got over myself I realised it was a lovely place.
But I’m keeping my star, just like I kept all the coffee and tea sachets. And the toiletries. 🤘🏻
C.
Decent place to stay in the central city. Check in and out efficient and friendly.
Breakfast restaurant a bit over priced and some hot items on the tough to cut side of cooking / warming.
J.
Loved our stay. The bed was absolutely amazing. Didn't want to get out of it this morning. Was lovely and clean. Whitby's restaurant was fantastic.
V.
Incredible, exceptional value for money. Very top notch!
N.
We stayed two nights .
The pros... easy access to the town centre. Service was really good. Air conditioner was not working and they changed the room. Food was really good as was the selection.
The cons prices are a bit steep.. No hotel car parking available, need extra charges to park.
W.
Hands down the best hotel I've ever stayed at. It's centrally located and very clean. The restaurant serves amazing food and often has live music.
I was also very impressed with the "eco" room cleaning service. This give you the choice to not have your laundry and towels washed every single day - which is total overkill anyway. In exchange you get a $10 dinner voucher.
B.
Stayed in one of the renovated rooms, which are very nice with walk in showers. The room was clean and well appointed as well as USB charging points. The food at the hotel is very nice but it would be better if they had there bar open later into the night. The staff were very friendly and accommodating.
R.
An excellent hotel.
They were extremely helpful, including ordering me a taxi, having a swift valet service, and allowing me to leave my bags with them when only my grandfather was checked in (I checked in the following day). So, they were very accommodating.
My room was enormous and had a great view. It also had a large ensuite including a bath. This was all at a very reasonable price.
The breakfast buffet had everything I could possibly want, including French toast, pastries, bacon, and eggs cooked however you want on request.
Very clean and loved the eco room service (which they give you a $10 in-hotel restaurant voucher for each night you select that room service option! Win-win)
C.
A very nice hotel. Comfortable rooms and comfortable beds. Nice buffet meal the evening we arrived. Very hospitable friendly staff. Thanks.
S.
Due to ferry delay, we arrived after 1am. instead 5pm. The Kindness, Goodness at the reception was amazing. We were so well looked after. Highly recommend.
J.
Having worked here in the past. This is a great hotel that is run very well and efficiently. Right in the middle of the CBd. Highly recommended. The lobby has soft playing music and a bar that creates a enjoyable environment. The staff are well trained and are well looked after. There is a parking building next door that is well maintained. The rooms cater to a wide variety of customers. From customers that are just staying for the night on a business trip to customers that are looking for a longer stay with larger rooms.
M.
A slightly older hotel, meaning the rooms are more spacious than normal. The interiors have been modernized tastefully, a $30-00 room upgrade was offered to me on check-in and it was well worth the investment
E.
Was there for a 2 day conference, I did not stay. I don't know what the brief was for the food but it was pretty poor in my opinion. Was a health focused conference & so gluten free, vegetarian etc. Very limited selection. Facilities themselves were clean & tidy. Would come again & hope for better in future.
A.
We stayed here for a weekend to attend a friends wedding. First of all I can’t speak highly enough of the staff; friendly accommodating and a pleasure to deal with. Next is the location; driving in is so easy, and from there you can walk to a number of great attractions. The cable car is next door, and if your room is on the hill side of the hotel you can watch it come and go, which is really cool. They are renovating at the moment, but we couldn’t hear anything, so I’d expect it will be even better in the future too. We will certainly be back.
E.
Still currently staying here. The staff have been really friendly and welcoming. When first entering the reception was very informative. The rooms are comfortable, tidy and modern. The rooms are cleaned to a high standard each day, and they have a green option where you can be environmentally friendly and not have the cleaning service and receive a $10 voucher for the restaurant.
S.
The service was superb and the helpfulness of the staff was top notch. The room was clean and what we had expected! Absolutely stay again!
D.
They have done a great job of giving some spit and shine to a Wellington icon. Clean and tidy rooms. Good food at the in-house restaurant. Handy to central Wellington. Parking is somewhat pricey at $30 overnight.
G.
Really central to everything making walking around the city and visiting landmarks so easy
K.
The pros... Service was really good. Food was really good as was the selection. Staff were attentive and we were asked a couple of times if things were OK.. The cons prices are a bit steep.. Bar was not prepared couldn't have the beer I wanted because they had not tapped a new keg for dinner service and the windows were a little dirty which was a shame because that view is nice!! But these were small things... All in all not a bad experience would like to go back when it's less crowded and not a Xmas dinner menu to see any differences.
H.
Rooms nice. A bit of trouble trying to book into the restaurant when staying in the hotel. Reception staff very helpful.
G.
Enjoy a couple cold beers and dinner at the Restaurant and it was topped off by five star performance from our hostess Brittany.
A.
Third visit to the James Cook. Booked a two day break with them, stayed for a week. The team at reception and the cafe are always so friendly and helpful. Really made us feel welcome. And such a great location with plenty of good bars, restaurants and shops within walking distance. Looking forward to visit number four.
P.
It was great to be back at the James Cook. The recent refurbished rooms are quite nicely, if simply, done. We stayed in a suite which had stunning views to the bays and Mt. Victoria. While we were there my wife had a birthday and the James Cook team made it very special with some lovely surprised for us. We won't forget it in a hurry. We felt quite special bring back there after a few years away. The staff are always awesome. We love the location too which is within walking distance of great restaurants, bars and tourist things to do. The TV service is not great and the restaurants are on limited hours post the Covid-19 lockdown which is why I haven't given a full 5 stars this time. But either way James Cook will continue to a favourite of ours.
T.
Our flight was cancelled and moved to an earlier time - we called the hotel to advise of the change and they happily amended our check in time but had to change the room that we originally were staying in. We arrived at the hotel and the same female that we spoke on the phone with was there to take out payment and had then mixed up our room with someone else’s. Can’t say that the customer service is very welcoming but still a lovely place to stay.
M.
Go to accommodation and breakfast buffet in my family. Rooms are nice with views of the central city. Good bar adjoining the restaurant where the food can be a bit last century. I had Groper which was nice but came surrounded by a very heavy buttery sauce.
M.
Staff at front desk great. Hotel owners need good staff like these guys/girls.meal nice. Good clean room. People walking through a bit of distraction.
D.
Service was a mixed bag. Whilst great from some (Natalie from Belgium was great), others were average.
For example: we were staying with club lounge access. It was only on our last day that we were informed that we had a free latte with our buffet breakfast. Nothing serious, but consistency is missing from the hotel.
Room was fine. Nothing great and have been in better rooms.
R.
Buffet all you can eat lovely variety of food ranging from hot food to salads, seafood, soups, dessert and many more selections we had the lunch menu. So I'm guessing it's slightly different to the dinner menu. Enjoyable experience and meal worth the price you pay if you eat your moneys worth.
B.
Upgrade to refurbished rooms on a higher floor and request view of the water. Twin rooms and bathrooms are large and hotel is central with lifts down to Lambton Quay which is the main shopping street. Lots of eateries on bottom level if you need a snack and Countdown is close by. Well worth the money.
R.
Great hotel, great location with elevator taking you down to Lambton Quay street level for great shopping and easy walking distance to the waterfront. Many great cafes and pubs on the way.
G.
Not up to its normal great standard, was a little disappointed this time. Roasts were dry and over cooked and the Christmas pudding was awful. Worst part was is it was double the price for not as great food. Do recommend normally.
R.
Highly recommended this place what a delicious food and beautiful restaurant
L.
Valet parking service is value for money if you have a car and need somewhere to park it. Service provided by front reception staff is exceptional. This is actually the reason for the 4 stars instead of three. I think the rooms need a revamp though, it’s a tad bit dated. But still overall great experience. Whitby restaurant is awesome.
R.
Clean room, nice views (we had four rooms some of which had views of the bay), pretty terrible internet, but the hotel is really nicely located with cuba street and the waterfront easily within walking distance (20 mins or less)
S.
Lovely, clean rooms. Friendly service. Wi-Fi was terrible.
M.
The room was clean but needs updating, I booked a room with the request of being on a higher story and also a balcony but the room I received was not at all what was pictured (none of the requests). One of two elevators was under maintenance so it took some time to get to our level and the elevator access from the Main Street was open to public access so at times there was a line for the lifts which also took some time. Other than that the location is great, on the main stretch and a few minutes walk to the cable car.
K.
A very good property in Wellington. Located centrally in Terrace. The rooms are big, the bed is very convenient, working table with Lan connection comes handy. The rest rooms are decent size and toiletries are good quality. Room has iron box and ironing board. Mini bar has decent collection. However the pricing is on the higher side. At present one of the lift is under maintenance, if you are in higher floor, you will end up waiting long to go down during busy hours. Breakfast spread is decent. Check in experience was fast and efficient. Overall very satisfying.
A.
From walking in, to checking in, to my room, everything was fantastic. Cannot fault it. So clean & comfortable. And a fantastic location too. Very happy.
R.
Highly recommend a stay here. Comfortable room with great amenities and excellent service. Top it of with a full breakfast buffet at Whitbys and you will go away truly satisfied.
H.
My mother stayed here recently, here is what she had to say;
"The buffet dinner at whitbys restaurant was good, there wasn't enough vegetable selection, but plenty of meat selection. Was a mushroom risotto which I very much enjoyed. I didn't try the Soup, but there 2, and plenty of bread selections.
The dessert was very good. Their was one hot option and several cold options. Just bite sized bits so you try a whole range of stuff. There was an ice cream stand, and a cheese platter.
I stayed in Room 1801, it had quite a nice view. I had a nice relaxing bath (there were no bubbles). The bed was comfortable, I had to be woken up by an alarm (which I never do). I had a shower, the only thing I could that say that is wrong with the room is having the a huge step to get into the bath over the shower, you could slip on that. The pressure was good, but the height of the shower was not good for washing my hair! The overall room experience was excellent, very big.
Breakfast buffet; I had an omelette, which was cooked for while I waited, and you could choose what ingredients went into it. The was juices, cereals, cooked breakfasts, Bircher muesli, canned fruit, fruits, tea & coffee
Overall my stay was fantastic"
K.
I stay at many Hotels and James Cook by far exceeds them all by way of service! The decor is not modern and 5 star but its clean and homely. And the service by ALL staff makes me choose James Cook over any Hotel any day!
Parking and Wifi is easy, access to State Highway is easy. I love this place and location.
J.
Enjoyed our coffee on the. 14th floor. Best views of Wellington. Great barista too
J.
Nice relaxed stay. No issues at all
J.
Good place to stay. Restaurant Bar and Service excellent..Food Superb. Highly recommend James Cook Hotel.
M.
The hotel in general is great. The restaurant food is good, the decor could do with some updating. Beds in the rooms are very comfortable. The staff ared particularly helpful and genuinely friendly which is always a nice addition when you're away from home.
M.
Booked through my employer, all meals covered so surprised to have my credit card details requested. When I declined they sought a $100 bond for "incidentals". Turns out they meant the minibar in the room so I told them to remove the minibar, problem solved. Other than that, quiet, well appointed, bathroom showing a bit of wear, clean and tidy. No hygiene issues and no noisy hallway issues during the night. I was on level 21.
M.
Beautiful room. Very Central. Helpful staff
K.
Great location for events in town. Rooms looking a little tired but comfortable bed and good shower.
F.
Used to go there every 6 months. Buffet food quality keep dropping in last few years. Luckily I was invited to there for a social dinner. Otherwise would not pay $45 - $49 for that class of buffet. Also dishes are pretty much same for nearly whole week as I had friends who just stayed there for the Asia Pacific amateur golf championship 2 weeks ago.

Generally good value, great location. Hotel is going through modernisation so not all lifts work so you will have to wait at lift or squeeze in. If using debit card you have to pay a bond and when checking out staff will have to check your room before they refund bond so expect a considerable wait when checking out (so leave lots of time) Food there is very good though and a highlight of the stay (hence the higher score)
J.
Ok, but could be better. We paid for having 3 adults staying but only got 2 towels. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Q.
One of the best hotel for visiting Wellington!
First this hotel is in the middle of Wellington downtown, this hotel has direct lift access to the Willies St, which is very convenient to walk to the pier, or do some shopping in the Countdown supermarket. We had the breakfast buffet at 17th floor for two days. The food there is very good, fresh and different variety. My check-in experience is great, I called the front desk few days ago and asked for two rooms next to each other, which they had reserved two nice view rooms that is at the end of 19th floor, which we love so much! Thanks for helping!
I would highly recommend this hotel to others!

Staffs are helpful. Room furniture are most likely in the 90s as can see that it's aged. Beds are still comfortable. Overall I still enjoyed my stay and its definitely worth what I have paid for.
i.
4/5 depending on price point (mid tier). She’s a little tired in places, even though decor and such are modern enough. For example, wind whistling through/around window joinery. Clean enough and does the job. Staff were excellent. Very close to Lambton Quay. Short stroll to parliament.
R.
We had a very nice room. Quite spacious good sized tv. Wifi included in the price. Good sized bathroom with vanity room for toilet bags. Good water pressure in the shower. Bed was firm without being too hard. Very centrally located.

We booked a long weekend in Wellington to combine our 20th wedding anniversary with visiting our daughter who is at university there. The James Cook seemed a fair bet for a comfortable stay. Things started well, check-in was good and the room was clean and comfortable (but who do they get to design the bathrooms, a fixed shower head at chest height for an average sized guy?). We ate out the first night so our first meal was breakfast which was excellent. I would like to pick out Lance and Rachel for excellent customer service. At dinner that night though things weren't great. The food was nice but having to argue for a solid 20 minutes to get a clearly bad bottle of wine replaced wasn't the sort of service I expected. When they eventually brought a replacement bottle (which was very good) we had lost our appetite so skipped desert. Breakfast on the Sunday was also not good. Cold coffee, lacklustre service and and invisible staff. The experience was only redeemed when Rachel who had served us on the Saturday arrived and delivered us hot coffee and a smile. I've given it 4 stars on balance though I had to think long and hard about 3 or 4 and in truth it is probably a 3.5 star rating. The hotel is well placed with comfortable rooms and reasonably well equipped. Some of the staff are delightful but unfortunately these are outnumbered by those who try to argue that my favourite wine is ' supposed to taste like that' and those that think its ok to serve half a cup of cold coffee from the dregs of the pot and then do an effective job of keeping their heads down to avoid any need to provide service. Could be good but let down by a handful of staff and the restaurant manager who clearly thinks she knows better.
R.
Friendly service. All meals were fantastic. Central Wellington. Elevator from hotel to central lampton quay. Couldn't have been a better choice(and very reasonable price at $144 per night for 2 people)
J.
Loved our room once we got the upgrade. Beautiful clean room with great air conditioning in this hot weather.
T.
Great service, nice rooms, wonderful breakfast. Rooms on the top floor include access to a floor lounge. The lounge has an amazing room and stocked with snacks and beverages. During happy hour it includes drinks and hors d'oeuvres service. Fantastic place to kick back and get a little work done on a business trip.
J.
Excellent staff and customer service. The rooms are dated, which is most evident in the bathroom (swollen wood near the sink- and a need for regrouting).
They do a good job of incentivising “eco services” - where they only to a basic make up of your room instead of the whole deal. If you choose an eco service they give you a $10 voucher for their restaurant.
The view for some of the rooms is an office block about 50m away
I got to check in at 10:30am- which was very convenient.
P.
Very good hotel great location
T.
Okay, I guess I am hooked on this one. We went for my daughter's 17th birthday and enjoyed it. Then we booked my 30th birthday. Then went again for my husband and three boys' birthdays. On all occasions the staff were professional, the food was excellent and the place was neat.
S.
Went to Whitby's Restaurant at The Grand Chancellor Wellington for a buffet breakfast. The selection of food to choose from was amazing! Everything tasted wonderful also and the highlight was the live cooking station where we were able to order fresh omelettes and pancakes. Not to mention it's quite wonderful go be breakfasting 17 stories up! 10/10
J.
Great venue for our Christmas party. 🎄
R.
Hotel was very good. 😊😊Parking confusing😐😐
B.
Room was comfortable, clean but dated. Were having quite a bit of problems with the elevators during our stay which was quite annoying. Resteraunt was nice with good food. Centrally located to the waterfront although access through the lifts to Lambton Quay could take some time due to the number of people accessing the lifts from the public carpark and public thoroughfare.
P.
Superb hotel in the heart of the city. Sure on The Terrace but is a short elevator trip down to Lampton Quay, the main shopping area in Wellington.
Staff are friendly and very knowledgeable and helpful. Rooms are very clean and tidy. Food is great even though eating out is always an option. Wish I could stay longer.
B.
Rooms could do with an update. Paid a hefty price for a Presidents Club room on the top level which I was told at the time of booking had partial harbour views. There was no partial harbour view at all... I’m 6ft 3” tall and barely fit between the roof and the raised shower over bath set up which seemed to have come straight out of the 80’s. The bed also was a strange set up, King Size, but with some kind of inbuilt frame providing barely any support and plenty of squeak. Other than these things... we had a lovely meal in the restaurant and the view from the club lounge was enjoyable.
R.
Certainly no major issues with my stay at the hotel. Firstly I found reception to be very helpful and welcoming. Very enthused and efficient in making check in as easy as possible. Just a small comment - a complimentary drink on arrival doesn't cost a lot but makes a bigger impression. The room was fine, however a little 'dated' from what I have seen at other hotels. The bathroom especially. Never actually heard of anyone that uses a bath anymore? As a result of this shower curtains are needed which really dates the style even more. The raised bath makes the shower head very low which required significant hunching to wet my head. Again no biggy just something which could be improved in the next bathroom overhaul. Otherwise a peaceful sleep on a relatively soft bed. The breakfast menu has everything but ordering was a little confusing at there are no prices per item?? Checkout was fairly quick and took approx. 5 min. I would recommend the hotel to my colleagues.
T.
Stayed there to babysit and the rooms are nice enough. The room I was in had a strange clunking noise every now and then that you'd think they'd deal with. TV channels are limited but WiFi is great.
C.
Pleasant enough. Could hear the showers in other people's rooms, and their phone alarms going off though.
K.
Great location. Very clean room
A.
The pumpkin soup was the winner for the evening. The price for a smorgasbord meal was reasonable as is eating your meal within a timeframe.
M.
Quality hotel with great staff. Have always expected the best from them and have always received it. Have never been let down. Great access to city centre and good food at bar & restaurant
S.
This hotel is a mid range hotel. The rooms are average sized, well set out, with reasonably sized bathrooms & all really clean. The reception, restaurant & cleaning staff were all really friendly, responsive & efficient.
M.
Great hotel with a wonderful location... Everything is near, people at the hotel are nice and always available to help and rooms are comfortable.
I'm not giving 5 stars because the TV system (they have some kind of TV box) is terrible... Just a couple of channels and not the great ones, but anyway if you're staying at Wellington I doubt that your main reason is the TV offering at the hotel
R.
We booked our wedding here last week. Bayley organized it perfectly at the hotel for us. We chose the hotel because it was central to our families in NZ. Everyone could fly in, one taxi and then no need to leave for anything. We were gifted a stay in a huge suite on the 25th floor 2502, which was awesome. Our wedding was held in a chancellor room on level 16 with a high tea, then everyone came to dinner on level 17. It was freezing outside, but very comfortable inside. Our older family members found it very easy to get around, not having to go outside. The high tea was beautifully presented, fresh and tasty. We had many options so had exactly what we wanted. Dinner was excellent, a mexican buffet, cooked by mexican cooks, over for the festival. We loved it. Thank you James Cook Chancellor, Bayley, and all the lovely, professional staff who made it a really special time for us.
S.
Very comfortable stay, the restaurant downstairs was really good which pleasantly surprised us. Very conveniently located and the parking was included as it was the weekend.
R.
Room was very good clean and tidy. and the staff were very polite.
Be careful of excessive charges we went for the continental breakfast in the morning e.g toast and muesli and it cost $56.00 for 2
Left with a slight sour taste with regards to parking as we checked in at 8:30pm the night before and were told parking costs were for 24hours which was fine by us as we were staying at the hotel for a conference which finished at 5.00pm with a whole floor booked out but we had to pay an extra $29.00 for car parking fees when we left as we were past 1:30pm. Just posting this so others don't get caught out.
P.
Having spent 4 nights at the James Cook on the "club floor" with the added benefits that come with Club Lounge access, and in addition also inclining the full breakfast as part of the room booking. I can say that it has been well worth the additional cost. Very friendly staff, great views of CBD Wellington both day and night from the club lounge. Very easy access to Central Wellington and close to a well serviced bus route. Should I be venturing back to the capital on a non-work trip I will seriously consider staying here again.
B.
Overall a nice well maintained hotel.
In the process of being renovated as some suites have the 1970s feel about them.
Restaurant and cafe serve a good meal with staff very attentive and friendly.
I.
Free wifi makes this place worth while
R.
Great facilities and friendly helpful staff. Had a great conference. Food was really good to with all the dietary options met.
B.
Had a short but enjoyable stay here. A good and well equipped room with great views. Good food and other amenities. Would recommend their parking services for your car and couldn't be easier to find.
R.
Great place, great location really friendly and helpful staff. Very clean and tidy, food looked good but didn't get to try it. Will be back
P.
Overall not a bad experience but there were a few things that felt off. The parking situation here is odd - Either pay hourly from a third party or pay 30 NZD for valet service that is a bit slow. The rooms seemed a bit out of date but mostly clean and comfortable. The hotel is in a pretty central location and has many walkable activities surrounding.
J.
I went to the James Cook to photograph an event. The staff were friendly and the buffet was very good with many foods on offer including ice-cream and sorbet. Good times.
D.
Just had the best High Tea ever, thankyou to Lance who served us for knowledge and friendliness, will definitely be back
R.
I took my wife there for dinner and had a great time. The food was delicious and there was a great variety for you to choose from. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
C.
A beautiful experience, we had a high tea with bottomless tea. Lovely food and tea selection. High tea was served in the bar, great view of the city and away from the lunch diners. An enjoyable afternoon.
M.
Great function room good acoustics didn't have to shout. Very comfy chairs.
A.
Attended a reunion there. Easy access directly opposite a motorway exit. Getting back on the motorway was easy. Good food. The room was very good with all you need. Easy lift access down to Lambton Quay. Recommended.
M.
I had a meeting set up at the Sojourn Bar in the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. Turns out I left my wallet here. Being a father there is not much cash in it. There a few important cards though. A few hours later the bar keeper returned it to me. Thanks very much! Saved me a lot of frustration.
L.
Our family loved our stay. Great handy location to CBD & the event at the Wespac Stadium we attended. Fantastic price for our family of four. Very clean & comfortable. Has a great restaurant, however I didn't see any vegan options. With pre-warning, I'm sure the chefs would be able to accommodate for that. A gym & beauty spa if you feel like treating yourself!
Only thing holding me back from a 5 stars is that affortunately there were noisy guests who early morning were slamming their door. The noise amplified through the atrium.
l.
the location is great its close to town a 30min walk or use of the elevator to get there in an instant
the room i have seen better for what i paid for. only one elevator was available at the time of my stay. for the money i paid i would expect a lot better.
R.
The room was okay, as was Whitby's restaurant. However, we had issues with several Chinese families staying on our floor who felt it acceptable to keep their room doors open all night and holler from room to room. I spoke to reception, who had the night manager come up a couple of times, to no effect. It was not very nice to get very little sleep before our flight back to the States.
K.
Didn't actually stay here, just parked up while I went to get my wisdom tooth ripped out. Seems pretty nice though. Might go inside one day, will update the review then.
J.
Great stay yet again. Friendly and helpful staff. Clean and tidy room. Love staying here when in Wellington.
R.
Better than one would assume good cleaning skills for rooms they got the not so obvious dirt when the room wad serviced that I left behind. Not so fussed with food on offer as not my thing. Food from there cafe was great for breakfast the Buffett was ok
R.
The food and service were outstanding but our diner was totally disrupted by a large family gathering. I feel they would have been in there place at mac donalds. Lots of kids running around making that much noise we struggled to hear one another at our table. Dipping fingers and food etc at a smogasboard. The waiting staff did there best but when theres 20 or so kids with no parental supervision then.......
Its put me off
J.
Formerly very upmarket hotel now in need of some minor TLC (see pics).
We stayed on the 21st floor in a spacious mostly well-equipped bedroom. Has a delonghi coffee maker, an electric kettle, mugs, cups and saucers, glasses. Small well-stocked fridge. An older smaller LG flat panel tv. Good AC. No USB and limited power outlets.
Good Wi-Fi.
Our room was adjacent to the freight elevator entrance and the door to that was very noisy since the closer was way out of adjustment, allowing the door to slam, a lot. Not the fault of the staff passing through, just the old out of adjustment closer on the door. Seems like the owners are holding back on the minor maintenance, using the place as a “cash cow”, you can see the wear and tear in some of my pics attached. See where there once was a drying line over the bath in the last two pics, the end to fix and the place where the retractable line used to come from.
Just added 3 more pics where the windows have been taped up. Looks like there was a time when you could open them some.
The hotel is handy to downtown situated on the Terrace, with an easy elevator down to Lambton Quay.
It’s expensive to stay here, parking $30/day on top of that, but I still give it a 4 since even though it’s a bit dated, it’s handy, quite well preserved and has good facilities.
E.
The lobby looks great, but the rest is old and in need of freshening up ad well as the beds are fixed to floor. But really good location. Parking cost extra $30
M.
An excellent room plus the staff were very friendly and helpful. Will definitely stay here again. Centrally located with lift access to Lambton Quay.
r.
Well located and priced.bit noisy in the morning but all I needed for a 1 night stay.recommend
L.
Tables were not set up when we arrived
Food was average
was disappointed with staff service
would think twice about going there again
M.
Good venue for a conference. Upscale bar, buffet food is acceptable. Upkeep of the restrooms during the conference without having to ask would have been appreciated.
N.
Great service, comfortable room, i was happy with stay here.
D.
Excellent place to stay, very clean and tidy, staff are wonderful, just a shout out to them for accommodating my family and I on such short notice and in peak holiday season too, it was really appreciated...highly recommended these people😊
C.
Very good location. Nice room with beautiful view. NZD 30/night charge for unlimitted in/out valet parking (hourly charge is included), I think, is ok, acceptable. :-) For drivers, please take note: do not park yourself, you must use valet parking. Parking is not operated by the hotel. Therefore, if you accidentally park by yourself, later on you have to pay for the parking (charged per hour) and still have to use the $30 valet parking.
N.
loved the view.but not so much the room.the bathroom nees more cover when u are having a shower.lovely maid to give us extra towels .
A.
Stay was good, room had good views. Food was not that great
A.
I've been visiting here for almost fifty years and continue to enjoy its better points. However, the hotel needs a lot of updating, which they have started. And, I wiil continue coming here. It's a great lication!
S.
Uncomfortable beds. The room itself was ok. The lobby is a hive of activity. Downstairs bar closes too early...11pm. But a very convenient location close to all amenities
V.
Great place. Had attended a dinner event at the hotel and the food was really good and the desert was great. Tried their tea afterwards but didn't really like that too much as it was very light.
J.
Warm, comfortable, generic hotel. Great location. The only change to the place from when I first started visiting 10 years ago is they no longer provide the Saturday paper but there is free WiFi.
V.
All good but can hear the neighbours in their bathroom which is super annoying at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 5am, 6am, 7am and your trying to sleep.
The downstairs restaurant is super yum and front desk super helpful.
T.
My family and I decided to stay here to accomodate the six of us. The hotel is at a great location. All in all a good hotel in a good location with great transport connections. Loved the layout of the room. From the moment we walked in we felt welcomed.
A.
Nice place...hmmm really though theres staff problem here slightly obnoxious little man reception on several occassions his demeanor has disappointment me. Rooms very well set up service overall is good
A.
Amazing place. Clean and tidy👍👍
J.
Excellent location. Right in the city, walk to everything easily.Had the best waghu steak ever but that was 12 months ago. Tried it again at the 17th Floor restaurant. Disappointed. There was a bone fragment in the steak which the staff were apologetic about and compensated with a complementary glass of red wine, but even then it just wasnt the same steak. Either there is new chef or they are getting their meat from another wholesaler or it was a bad day for waghu steak dinners. Hope to try it again if its not the same as my first 2 previous dinners I'll be giving this restaurant a wide berth.
A.
It is very well located, staff is lovely. The furniture is a bit old. Nothing problematic. Plus for the eco-friendly packaging toiletries
P.
Went for High tea and would highly recommend
C.
Good hotel location in the city and the elevator from the lobby to the lower quay was so helpful. It dropped you right in the center of it all and you didn't have to trek anywhere. The room was well appointed.
S.
In need of work.
I stayed one night in a double bed, room. I have stayed here a few times in years before and it has always been very good. This time although I did think the interior is becoming outdated and needs work urgently to maintain its prestige.
D.
The room appointment was dated, but it used high quality timbers so you didn’t mind. All joinery was solidly made. Service was good too.
M.
Friendly greeting. Old style hotel room. Clean, and beds comfy. Heating adequate but awkward to control. Not very soundproof.
C.
Very nice Hi Tea most enjoyable both my friend and I will be back thank you for good service and attention
A.
It is ok
Rooms are a bit old but clean and spacious
Lovely staff
T.
The good news is the view. The bad news is the service and acumen towards guests. The weekend staff was rude and mostly intolerable. Internet is shady and you have to pay at $100 per day to send an email in 2016. While some may have tried the most failed miserably, from front desk to housekeeping.
s.
Famous and antique hotel located in central Wellington city. Rugby teams almost always stay here. Their restaurants do good buffet and high tea.
p.
Very handy location to walk around the city. Friendly staff, nice and clean room has got everything we need.
H.
Love the Italian Hot Chocolate and appreciate the lovely lady who makes them!
M.
Place is a bit old and could do with a revamp. Buffet was good and air conditioning worked well. I am yet to find a hotel with quality pillows
R.
Great customer service, great location, many amenities including gym, bar, restaurants. Passes available to full gym within walking distance. Rooms are a little dated but nice.
A.
I attended a reception with a buffet with a delicious selection of food. Staff were friendly and helpful. Went back for breakfast the next day, breakfast buffet was excellent as was the staff.
A.
Tidy but a bit dated.
Have stayed a couple of times.
Close to the waterfront an center of town.
Y.
I really enjoyed my stay as James Cook has a lovely mellow atmosphere. The beautiful piano music played so well by the elderly gentleman at the bar added to the nice feeling.
w.
Comfy Bed, Clean Room and fresh towels are always nice. The room was abit cold and we couldnt adjust the warmth but it was a cheap twinshare room
Overall a comfortable stay, safe and quiet.
R.
This is such a grand old hotel with the best breakfast, awesome lunches and great place to meet for dinner. All round reasonable prices and highly recommended for business travelers and any visitors to the friendly and beautiful city of Wellington.
C.
Good hotel which is pretty central in Wellington. The rooms are a touch old, for example, the TVs were not HD, but it was still a good place. The valet was good service too.
L.
A big thank you to all the staff for great service but particularly to the housekeeping staff who found my merino jacket in the wardrobe and kindly posted it back to me. As it was a gift I am very grateful. Thanks again, we will see you next time we are in Wellington. Regards, Lois
D.
Great location, easy access to the city. The over worked reception did their best to help. Breakfast was good. Only complaint was the cheaper rooms bed was average, so the sleep was not great. Perhaps I'm fussy.
M.
Courteous..helpful..well dressed staff! My stay was absolutely wonderful! Highly recommend to others Thank you for making my first-ever stay in a Hotel a wonderful memory I'll always treasure..
R.
Comfortable, but dated, rooms.
The provided "heat pump" does a poor job of warming the room, even on the highest temperature setting.
Raised bath makes showerhead sit at chest height.
Provided wifi is barely usable and very expensive($24/1GB/day), mobile data from almost any carrier is cheaper and significantly faster.
S.
good place to to stay, beds are OK but small
G.
Clean comfortable rooms. Situated close to cbd supermarkets and restaurants The lifts in the building are currently being maintained and repaired sometimes causing long queues during peak times these repairs will be ongoing for some time to come staff friendly and helpful
R.
Clean comfortable room. Pleasant reception on arrival. Albeit a little more expensive than previous stays and this time staying for 3 nights. Normally only one night stays!
K.
Our favourite place for a high tea! A great experience and the food is always delicious. Amazing service and comfortable restaurant area.
J.
There are 2 double beds in the room. 4 pillows on each double bed for 2 pax feels very luxurious when we were given 1 pillow each in the motel stay throughout North Island. And take note the motel stays cost the same as James Cook.
P.
Quiet room, central city location makes it convenient to most activity in the CBD.
Restaurant and cafe on site.
Great buffet breakfast and dinner available in the hotel
K.
Good place to stay whilst travelling in Wellington. Location is walking distance to the harbour and main CBD.
Only downside I have is that there is no balconies in the rooms (I assume this is due to the earth quake hazard?)
U.
5May16 Extremely easy to find and well located near state highways and one way roads to and from the hotel en route to the Wellington sea port and the airport terminals. Tight carparking building turning angles require careful driving but well worth the walk-in connection to the hotel. Good front desk service and WIFI. Very good rooms and a little less expensive than Rydges Hotel one kilometer nearby.
C.
A pretty standard hotel with the rooms getting a bit tired. The staff are excellent, but the buffet is what really make staying here great.
D.
The staff here were all very nice and welcoming. But the place is expensive considering it's pretty dated and a bit tacky. Great location but needs an update and some renovations.
R.
Easy car parking in the hotel.
D.
I stayed at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor as part of a larger group. Check in was easy and reception staff were very friendly.
The room was well kept and there is 500mb free wi-fi per day with the option to purchase more.
There are conference and meeting rooms and a couple of restaurants and bars within. There are also gym facilities. There was easy access to the CBD and shops.
My stay at the hotel also fell on the night of the 7.8m earthquake on 14 Nov 16 which caused a bit of movement on the 24th floor. The staff did their best to provide support to guests which was impressive given the situation.
C.
Buffet food for dinner was extremely disappointing 😞 but breakfast was yummy!
N.
Very central to the CBD. The room was great, ideal for a weekend getaway.
T.
Lovely stay. Fantastic breakfast. Only let down was the expensive valet only parking. But overall a great stay. And LOVED the pillow menu!
J.
Pretty good. Food was ok and service was great. Could do better with food selection.
A.
I only stoped here to meet a friend at the bar recently, seemed really good as per usual. Reasteraunt is one of the few buffet in Wellington and thus would totally recommend it, if a bit to expensive.
f.
I stayed there for 2 days. Amazing service and awesome breakfast. Highly recommended. I was really lucky to cancel the room I booked in copthorn millennium Hotel.
S.
Nice place to stay, enjoyed the piano music in the lobby. Problem with wifi was promptly sorted out by the duty manager
C.
Always love staying here. Immaculate, fantastic service, great people to deal with
C.
Showing its age. Lifts (elevators) are being done up and are a let down. Close to centre city though and better than alternatives out of the CBD. Rooms and bathrooms are tired.
O.
Ate here for my uncles 30th. Was violently ill after consuming the food. Lovely place.
J.
very beautiful but I've gotta say, the colonisers and indigenous murder name 'James cook' gotta go... please change your name
D.
It was great, staff where very nice especially Helen she was so friendly and helpful =)) only thing I could fault was the beds were slightly hard 😁
M.
Service good. Room a little dated but bed comfortable. The place generally a bit drab. No facilities to write home about. Good central location.
P.
Very central Wellington hotel. The comfortable and clean room I had wad blessed with great views of tge central city and view shafts to the harbour. Hotel has restaurant, gym and spa
T.
Food was great, if you taking kids maybe go for breaky/lunch more food options for those fussy eaters than the dinner buffet, unless your fine with them eating dessert for dinner than great yummy desserts.
A.
Centrally.placed. Good for gondola,Te Papa museum and the waterfront. Room was within atrium so a little claustrophobic.
S.
Superb nights rest. Great control of lighting, private and self contained rooms. Loved my 2 day stay!
M.
Very good hotel however the staff were a bit arrogant
F.
The Club Lounge perks was lovely. Nami-san was a joy to talk to. The rooms are great, except for some toilet stains. No water view though from the rooms.
R.
Haven't been there for a while. The service and staff are still as helpful and pleasant as always. Clean tidy rooms
Z.
Loved the bed. Shower was a bit tricky as I had to stand very close to it to get much water. But end of bath was quite narrow so potentially danger of slipping. Restaurant service was pretty slow.
G.
Enjoyed our stay. Hotel is looking dated, but is still very comfortable. Nice sunny room with view of the terrace.
J.
Incredible hotel. My husband had a heart attack while we were there and the staff sent him a basket of fruit. We loved our stay.
N.
The height of the shower heads (5ft), mouldy bathroom, 33kbps internet speed (when it's working), very run down. In dire need of renovation. That said, it is in a very central location. Linen was clean.
J.
Great stay for our conference, modern rooms and great facilities.
G.
Very expensive for the type of room. Was delayed overnight and had to stay after spending previous night at thorndon hotel. Was over 200 more and the room was not significantly different.
Very good restaurant with a great value buffet.
T.
Perfect location so easy to get to everything. Clean and very friendly helpful staff. Do not regret booking here.
T.
Lovely staff. Lovely atmosphere. Lovely meal. Will return back.
k.
We had a great room with super views. Excellent service. Good price. Perfect location. Parking.
C.
Bedside tables with accessible power points and multiple USB charging sockets on both sides of the bed. How a hotel should be in the 21st century
M.
Excellent service on arrival reception staff were efficient and welcoming
Rooms were clean comfortable and will presented.
Breakfast was to die ☺
M.
Great spot. Nice rooms and good staff. Very good buffet as well. Great place to stay for work or with family.
D.
Nice place and staff. Great location. Reasonable priced accommodation.
E.
Have stayed here a number of times, is what it is. Decent location, nice restaurant and a fair place to lay your head.
N.
The best buffet I have had. The selections we're top notch. The quality of the ingredients was superb
G.
Great Location, nice clean rooms. We enjoyed our stay
E.
Lovely place was a great location to experience. A must! Take the time to listen to Shaun Johnson the pianist. You will not be disappointed.
f.
Beautiful place to stay in the middle of Wellington city. Enjoy morning walk on the sea wall... Very quiet like a ghost town as everything close down for Xmas.
C.
Food is ok, bar could have a little more variety... haven't experienced the rooms.
E.
We enjoyed our time at the hotel, the staff is very service oriented. The room was a bit outdated
S.
When you go to Wellington, you must go on the cable car. The views at the top are amazing and there are some nice walks and sights to see, such as Carter Observatory
w.
Nice hotel situated in the heart of Wellington New Zealand. Accessible to great shopping, fine dinning and many other events held in the capital.
A.
We had a very lovely buffet meal at the Whitby Restaurant.Great service and atmosphere. Food was fresh and a good variety.
T.
Only came to James Cook for a special occasion - it was a beautiful place to have it but the elevators were a hassle because there was only one working at each side so the wait just to get anywhere took a while.

Well located in central Wellington with easy walking access to the attractions, food and bars.
friendly knowledgeable staff who take the extra time to get to know you make the experience even nicer.

Rooms were lovely. Conference facilities perfect, food outstanding and the service from staff faultless. A perfect facility for your conference.
G.
The staff were very attentive but unfortunately we left 2 pairs of shoes in wardrobe of room 1501 today and still waiting to hear if they have been handed in.

Coffe and hot chocolates not hot enough. No non-dairy desserts, just excuses. Not good enough for a supposedly top hotel. Waitress referred to us as "yous" (ewes?).
K.
Great location with easy access to Lambton Quay. Short walk to Te Papa museum and the waterfront. Rooms are a bit dated but clean and presentable.
S.
Nice and clean. Concierge lady was very friendly and helpful.
N.
Friendly staff.
Heating needs looking at. I had to ask for a room change late in the night as the room I was in was freezing. Second room again heating went off around early morning.
S.
Been traveling here for over 25 years. Have tried 3 other Wellington hotles and they dont come close . This place is very good in terms of staff, management, food, and views.

The rooms are clean and big. However, the food is mediocre.

It's really nice place to have a business/professional conference. It's in the middle of the CBD area and it's not too expensive comparing to other hotel conference rooms.

Gr8 hotel right in middle of downtown Wellington. Easy to get to. Everything you need plus valet parking. Staff lovely!

Always good to stay here, easy location to get too. Only downside is current maintenance on the lifts mean a bit of waiting time but that's not a major.

We actually went there for the buffet restaurant. The food is great, lesser choices from the previous buffet restaurants I've been, but still good and pricing is okay.
A.
Such great food for a great price, definitely recommend their buffet meal option, high quality food and service, will be going back again!
C.
Pretty much what one would expect in a business hotel, bed(s), limited space, a desk to work on, a TV with pay to view movie/adult channels, stocked bar, bath tub.
C.
Handy to centre of town. Rooms spacious and shower at a good height
D.
The food has improved tremendous and one of the best butter chicken I have tasted
J.
This is a great place for a special group dinner. Historic surroundings and great service. Excellent food

Though the room and food were good, the hotel checked me out one day earlier because they said the room was vacant, and they charged me something from the mini bar that I did not consume. I will not be coming back.

Buffet was beautiful and plenty of it, our room was very spacious, clean and airy
P.
Very acceptable accommodation for when in the CBD . Halfway between high end and middle accommodation in Wgtn. Access by vehicle is a bit of a pain as being right on the intersection of a busy st and off ramp.
R.
Great hotel in central Wellington, New Zealand... lifts are still being renovated, otherwise this might have been a five star rating...
M.
A little dated but friendly staff, centrally located, clean and most of all comfortable beds.

Whitby expensive dinning, & buffet not changed in last 20 years.

A.
Excellent hotel for a reasonable price. Only minus is the current renovation of the elevators which leads to waiting times.
