S.Haven't actually stayed there but was checking it out yesterday. The owner is so awesome. Had friends stay there often. Highly recommended.
M.Best place ever!!! Huge gaming room with pooltable, table tennis, bowling area and much more. Unbeatable price and breakfast was included. The owner is a lovely person who was very helpful. There was no water for half of the building apparently, we immediately were offered a different room for a shower. Just lovely we will definitely come back!!!
T.This is an affordable and comfortable location to stay for both short and long term stays. The guy Theo takes good care of you. There are many amenities such as a pool table, table tennis table, car parking facilities, etc. There is also a lounge with a piano as well as a common kitchen. I wouldn't recommend it for really loud people and party lover since the place maintains a very quite decorum.
A.What a lovely place to stay! Room was clean warm and had all we needed, fluffiest blanket ever too! We had a blast playing ping pong and indoor bowls in the games room. The breakfast was great, and superb hospitality. Hope to come back again!
O.Very interesting place to stay, it's an old retirement home that's been turned into a hotel/motel. Always very cheap to stay, nice and close to the city, a free continental breakfast, and very nice staff. Rooms are always clean, and very warm. Have stayed twice and have been satisfied with my stay both times.
M.Theo and Jan, a lovely caring couple made me feel at home for my stay of several months. They were always very helpful and my room with ensuite was immaculate.
Y.Welcomed personally by the owner. Converted old age home. Rooms pretty large, walk in toilet spacious. Secure parking. Breakfast very basic but for the price better than nothing. Neat, comfortable, clean. All you need for an overnight stay.

P.Cheap accommodation in a fantastic setting. As others have said breakfast is included and there is a kitchen, utensils and food storage available. If I'm visiting the area again Hikurangi will definitely be top.of the list for accommodation!
T.A very different experience compared to the average backpacker's dive, that's for sure! I'm fairly certain this place has been converted from an old people's home - it has all the hoists and support bars in the bathrooms, so it's much better for disabled people too (and has a lot of space for wheelchairs as well).
Practically deserted when I stayed so it was incredibly quiet but if it ever did get busy the usual caveats of such conversions - lack of soundproofing, partition walls and chipboard doors - would apply.
Coming from the smelly bedlam of Base Wellington however, it is an oasis of calm. It's sort of like a cross between (a good) Fawlty Towers and the house in 'The Others': slightly creepy when it's so deserted, especially when there are thunderbolts, lightning and pouring rain at night as it was when I typed this!
Free use of laundry facilities (you need your own powder though) and free (fast) wi-fi. No dorms, just 2 person (bunk) rooms and singles AFAIK. Enormous game room with indoor bowling (!), table tennis, pool table (needs resurfacing) & board games etc. Kitchen is in large lounge area which might be an issue. TV is at time of writing a fairly small screen.
You won't be disturbed by a nightclub nearby either LOL.
I doubt you will find many 'Backpackers' like this on BBH NZ anyway ;-)

M.A converted house/retirement home that now functions as a bed and breakfast. Called in late, were very helpful and sorted out a room quickly. Very welcoming and comfortable, highly reccomendable

I thoroughly enjoy the hospitality, everyones so friendly, and genuinely know a lot about Whanganui.
The rooms are very reasonably priced, clean & tidy and the common areas are well looked after.

Klasse Unterkunft! Super Lage, sehr nah an der Stadt und doch ruhig und im grünen. Das Personal ist freundlich, zuvorkommend & erfüllt einem alle wünsche.
Shaun, der Manager ist immer verfügbar.
Die Zimmer sind für das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis außerordentlich. Mit eins der besten, wenn nicht sogar das beste B&B in Neuseeland. Nur zu empfehlen, definitiv einen Besuch wert.
