Room was spacious and well laid out, bed was comfy.
The dinner was very over seasoned and hardly edible, be meal was not heated through. (Similar on all three dishes).
The location was excellent and rooms very quiet!

H.We have stayed multiple times with yous over the past 5 years, it is the only place we will stay in Whangārei, it is clean, awesome facilities, easy access to everything and the customer service is excellent, I haven’t previously written a review as i just hadn’t got around to it, but this time was especially exceptional, a big thank you to your staff member Ashleigh Wynyard who took my booking and went above and beyond to sort what i had asked for with a great attitude and great customer service, the new rooms are absolutely beautiful and a big improvement, we can’t wait for our next visit in a couple of months.

S. H.The staff were lovely and friendly the room was a little bit tired but lovely and clean. We had some pre dinner drinks and dinner in the restaurant which we enjoyed. Very reasonable prices. We had to cut our stay short due to covid19 levels changing and we were not charged for our final night. This was very much appreciated. This was a gifted gesture that will not be forgotten and we will stay there again in the future. Thank-you Distinction Hotel Whangarei.
D.Ideal spot so close to town. Lovely staff however the rooms are a little disappointing tbh. The place is tired and in need of some much needed refurbishing however in saying this I did check our room before checking in and excepted this however things like the windows could have been cleaned. I do know how hard that would be considering the position of the motel however I live across from water and my windows are cleaner...we had booked the day before so little things little this....could make all the difference and one might overlook the shower glass that needs a bloody good scrub or maybe even new glass door etc.
Also when booking our internet was up and down so we weren't able to book online so we rung then when paying were charged extra because we didn't book on line.....just something to watch for.
I definitely would want to try this place again once refurbishments (maybe new beds and linen) are complete coz like I said it's the perfect spot and could be the perfect accommodation.

Town is a stone throws away but there is no need with a gym,spa,pool and laundry facilities on site or laundry service.
I highly recommend the buffet breakfast which was suitable for our food requirements (vegan,keto)

The staff were informative and Crystal in the main reception was most hospitable as well as bar and Restaurant staff for dinner.

G. “.One or two small oversights with the housekeeping which was more than compensated for by the fantastic service from the super helpful and friendly staff. And possibly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Some of the interiors are a little tired, but I hear up-grades are on the way. Would definitely stay here again 👍

N. W.Location is great & we enjoyed that as much other times we've stayed. The behaviour of a counter staff member was concerning as he wiped his nose on the back of his hand several times as we waited to check in. Luckily we we're served by someone who was a model of professionalism. Another staff member was there for check out and didn't show any interest in our stay/satisfaction. There was a pillow on the bed which didn't look clean and no bathmat was supplied. The spa bath was disappointingly small, but it did work.
S.Needs alot of upgrades
The staff are lovely and that is the only reason it gets a three star but the quality of rooms for value are very subpar... Hardly any power plugs in rooms , very dated with no upgrades visible .... Buffet breakfast finishes at 9.30am which I think could be later given checkout is 10am
Bed was terribly worn and uncomfortable, on both stays and leads me to not stay here again until upgrades have been made
I didnt review last time as I was hoping this experience would be better and I would get a good sleep but I woke up with a sore hip as I did last time
L. D.If you are looking for a nice place to stay in Whangarei the distinction is pretty good.
The rooms overlooking the town basin are really top notch.
Sitting in the evening looking at the lights reflecting off the water and the smell of the cool sea is really worth the little bit extra.
It's not expensive and it is a short walk to the downtown restaurants and bars.
The breakfast is good value and offers a wide range for everyone.
Air conditioning in the room makes for a very comfortable sleep and the spa bath is soothing.
I really haven't taken full advantage of all the facilities here.
Curling up with a good book and listening to the sound of the harbour is really much to good to pass up.
Do try it....a little bit of magic in the middle of town.

P. B.Staff were super helpful and friendly, especially the young lady in the lounge bar. Room was clean and tidy, shower had good pressure. All Sky channels available. Pool was nice and refreshing, spa nice and warm! Food at Portabello restaurant was delicious each time we ate there. Great location, easy walk into Town Basin. Everything we wanted in one hotel. Would definately stay again

Nice clean rooms, great spa. only nitpick was the sink basin in the bathroom was way too close to the toilet, it was difficult not to bump into it.

I stayed at Distinction Whangarei for 4 nights in February 2021.
As soon as you reach there, you will realise that this place has seen better days. The place is huge; the staff is nice; breakfast is good and the location very near the city centre. There us is plenty of parking too.
C. D.I enjoyed my stay here and service was great. Apart from the bath tub it was full of little hairs it hadn’t been cleaned out and it was in the tube holes so once you turned the spa bath on it kept coming out and it was never ending. Not pleasant at all!
D. C.This 'hotel' is in a great location & had all the facilities however the photps are misleading. 5 years ago when the photos are posted it may have looked like that. Now, the carpet is full of stains & worn. The bed was soft, the bedspread had stains on it & the linen was thin. The wood is old & worn, the bathrooms are tired & a bit dirty looking because of it. The conference room had a great big lump in the middle of the room & rather than fixing it (& the horriblystained, worn carpet) they have taped a paper sign saying 'beware, unlevel floor'. This hotel needs serious investment & renovations to make it become a 4 or 5 star place. The staff were lovely though, which is the only reason I gave it a 3 & not a 1!

K. S.Great location and friendly helpful staff. But the standard rooms section is badly in need of renovations and an upgrade. Rooms are fated. Fan wobbled and rattled. Air conditioners are outside your windows and noisy, even with windows closed we could hear the next rooms unit. Bed was terrible an old inner spring mattress that meant you nearly fell out if you laid near the edge. And was very low. For the price it just isn't good value.
S. Y.Rooms are a bit outdated but not bad. The restaurant food and service is what I think made the stay worthwhile. Friendly. Attentive. They sweep the table cloth with the metal thingy to clear it of crumbs which I love but don't see at many restaurants these days. The food is similarly traditional.
M.comfy, free wifi, covid info. No menu, old style hairdryer, flat pillows, medium hard/soft mattress. It is simple, minimalist ☺ nothing fancy but its whangarei. The more you look.. its average, so dont stress. I like it here, its peaceful
K.Stayed here for one night with my parents. We got a standard twin room but somehow got an upgrade to a junior suite, nice! Check-in process was fast. The room was fairly clean, tidy and quiet. The main problem was that the shower was leaking a lot so it was difficult to shower, otherwise, there were no major issues with room 103. The swimming pool is too cold and the spa pool wasn't hot enough. The lounge is a really nice place to relax in, the restaurant is also really nice. The breakfast buffet had some variety but most of the food had good taste. Overall, it was a nice stay.

F. “. R.Im a mum of 2 and I definitely need this break. I feel Relaxed. We got a nice family room and the amnesties just what I need swimming pool and spa love it. Food are great too we had room service huge amount. Will definitely coming back here
I.I choose this because I had stayed at the Distinction in Dunedin, which is excellent. This however is not. Check in was a disaster. The lady, who admittedly was new, had no clue what to do with my (US) credit card. Then they sent me to the wrong building.
The room was fine. The bar had a decent choice of beer, and the food was okay.
The place is clearly old and showing its age. Everything was industrial carpeting with some rather dubious stains. Okay for a night and close to some nice shops just over the river but wouldn’t stay longer.
T. A.Such a great place to stay. Rooms are bigger than normal and staff are really friendly. Clean rooms and room service was great. Location is minutes away from supermarkets and amenities. The pool wasnt heated on Saturday which was ok because it was a warm day. The spa stairs however need looking at. Not big things. But definitely makes a difference. Otherwise really awesome stay.

D.I didnt love it, but also didnt hate it. The whole place is in desperate need of a full reno/refit. Its stuck on the 80/90's and while everything is clean enough, it still feels old and crusty. The beds are super soft and i suspect super old. The staff were very pleasant and helpful though. I wouldnt stay again given the option, but its not the worst place Ive stayed by any stretch.

All clean....only negative is the need to update of flooting/carpets in the rooms (they are very old and dated).

S. N.This is a nice hotel well located. We had the family room which is huge. The breakfast was excellent similar to the Millenium hotels buffet breakfast. Plenty of onsite car parking. Rooms were clean and tidy. Only down side was as the room is so large its difficult to heat it up.

Pool is lovely but the spa steps are a bit dangerous and needs fixing before someone has a serious injury. Staff is lovely though. Prices are good too.
K. P.We arrived and were able to check in early at The Distinction, 10 Adults and 5 kids. Really easy check in, great location, great over-all service. Easy stroll to the restaurants. We enjoyed the late check out and the buffet breakfast which was part of a great deal they run for families. Before booking I had read the reviews and yes it is dated, that old school hotel style, but it certainly suited our groups needs. Loved the ice fridge located at the bottom of the stairs for guests use, there's WiFi, sky, a pool, so once we got back after dinner the kids were sorted. Its great place to stay when attending an event in Whangarei.
J. “. W.Stayed for a boys weekend/ army reunion. Well looked after by all staff. Rooms and restaurant are starting to show there age a little. Heaps of parking. Easy walk to town. Had the buffet breakfast ($25) which had good choices. Good bar, pool and an above average gym. I would stay here again

Stayed for 3 nights with a water view in the front section of rooms.
Sky TV is in all the rooms.
There is an old school restaurant on site with a small bar area with a pool table adjacent to it.
The best eating spots are actually a 10 minute stroll away in the harbor area itself.

D.A fairly dated but tidy hotel. Great facility for conferencing and leisure. A gym, spa pool and indoor pool to be enjoyed. The pool table in the bar requires $2 coins that you cannot obtain over the bar. So have some cash handy. The bar tab doesn't go on your room either, so that was a little annoying. The restaurant food and service was good. The room has its own heating, a nice balcony and good bathroom. Enjoyable stay. Staff could find opportunities to be a bit more helpful, i.e. using key card to get into buildings. The venue is accessible.
T. N. A.Rooms were cleaned and nice ,but there was a one problem we booked our two rooms online from website and we asked adjoining or nearby rooms but they gave us one room upstairs and other room downstairs which we didn't expect.

y. a.The room was fairly basic and clean. Bed was comfortable. Unfortunately there were no net curtains hence no privacy when the curtains are open and not able to enjoy view of the marina - footpath and road are very close (approx 3 metres) to room.
Spa bath did not work - disappointing given I specifically asked and paid for it. Light over bed did not work. Refrigerated water was frozen.
This room certanly did not epitomise Distinction.

S. W.The Distinction is like a relic from the late 1970s. I don't think the interior has had a refresh since then. It's a nice enough place overall, but you'd got the feeling they've been making do for 40 years. The room service meal of lamb curry was very nice, if a bit expensive, because it's room service....plus a surcharge because it's room service.
That's all forgivable. What isn't forgivable was the bed. It's clearly years past it's best before date. We could feel the spring frame inside the mattress through the padding and the mattress does under our bums.
You can skimp on interior redecorating for a few decades, but for goodness sake don't skimp on the beds.
M. B.I attended a full-day meeting here and they did light catering, which was nice.
We were all provided with pens and notepads for taking notes. The layout of the meeting room was arranged so that everyone could see everyone and members were able to participate in discussions comfortably. Presenting was easy through their projectors and other relevant equipment.
The venue was fairly easy to find (although I did use a GPS) and there was good signage and adequate parking. We weren't sure which room to go to for the meeting, but the staff were helpful and directed us to the right place.
I didn't organise the meeting so do not know about pricing. Maybe this is all pretty standard stuff but this place definitely met our needs.

J. S.Found this place on Trivagi and ended up booked at the front desk for a very reasonable price. The check in staff was really engaging with good conversation and started the good vibe that lasted through our stay. The location was great we really enjoyed being across from the cute little riverside boat village. Fitness center, pool table and pool too!
J.First night was excellent, the second night was just okay, served cold steaks. Pizza was good except someone forgot to defrost it so it was hot on the outside but very cold in the middle, however roomservice heated it up properly and didn't charge for the pizza, just a little disappointing after a good first night
T.I personally think the price is a bit high considering the competition. Meals took a long time and breakfast wasn't available in enough time for our needs over the weekend. The room itself is quite amazing. The hotel staff were very helpful and always polite and attentive. A thoroughly enjoyable stay and we will be returning.

T. N.Although we had not intended to stay overnight in Whangarei it proved necessary. We enjoyed our stay at Distinction Hotel. The facilities pool etc were excellent and the Restaurant for dinner was a bonus.

J. L.A great location and more importantly the Salmon and Steak! The Distinction, though a bit dated, provides you with the ease of not only being able to walk (5mns) over to the marina and CBD for some great dinning options, but also has a decent indoor kitchen and menu choice!
The gym facilities are there if you're looking for somewhere to put a sweat in. The staff are friendly and more than happy to help if anything comes up. I had a preference regarding room location, and they didnt hesitate to look and see if it was possible...which it was.
Now, on to the most important thing...FOOD!
The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and to top it off, it was a massive piece of meat! I was happy to find somewhere that serves a nice hearty size meal, and it was presented nicely sitting on top of my mash!
The Salmon, I ordered was just as impressive and something I'd expect to see in some of Aucklands more pricey locations! Well done to the chefs!
Also available is a separate bar lounge area for anyone looking to shoot some billards, throw a few darts or just hang out and watch a game! For sure the most social scene of the hotel, and a good place to meet new people!

T.The location is excellent with a short walk over the bridge to the town basin. The upstairs guests were thumping around their room until midnight and the next room guest's alarm clock woke me at 6am. The service from all staff was excellent. For the cost it was a bit tired and tatty.
S. O.An adequate place to stay while in Whangarei on business. The walls are thin but you are far enough away from the road for it not to matter much. The pool complex is stark and uninviting but, again, perfectly adequate. The room rate is cheap but they try to make up for it with the not so cheap mini bar and room service. There are no self catering facilities beyond a kettle.
A.No kitchen area in junior suite had to wash dishes in bathroom sink otherwise a nice place

T.First of all the meal we had was fantastic however dont book a stay in room 318. The king size bed is broken. The springs in the middle of the bed is broken it was like there was a hole.
T.I stayed one night in this city to see the sights. I have enjoyed the stay in the hotel room very much. The various facilities in the hotel are excellent. Great location to all the fields. All in all a good hotel in a good location with great transport connections.
M.Amy moved mountains to support my requests. And then when my taxi did not show Murray drove me In his personal car to my post grad class who were waiting. I cannot thank them both enough!!
B.Good accommodation. Whole venue is a bit dated but seems to have everything you need. Including pool and spa. Good breakfast too.

S. P.Disappointing... took what should have been a great room only to be kept aeake by road noise.. advertised as superior room.. but was tired (in need of a refresh) beed was so waorn i thought i was sleeping on the floor... road noise isnt worth the extra cost
E.Rooms are comfortable and clean, smell outside the hotel is abit unpleasant being next to the waterfront, but it doesn't smell inside the room.
H.Great place to stay. Good walking distance to the waterfront eateries. Wouldn't bother eating in their restaurant again though.

Gave me a newly renovated superior king room. Spotless and very welcoming as well. OMG the mirror in this room is freaking big... Great position for a romantic getaway... Not so good if your into feng shui. Loads of pillows and the beds are very comfortable.
