Definitely worth the stop if you are passing through here. Lots of fresh sushi, sashimi and cooked meals. The sushi was incredibly fresh as you'd expect, generously packed with salmon and the chowder was tasty and hearty. We brought some items to takeaway and they packed them with ice. The beetroot cured salmon is exceptional and some of the best you'll taste but at $100 per kg it's pretty steep. Worth it for a splurge.
M.
We enjoy a visit to the Salmon Farm and always come away with some fresh salmon to enjoy at home. There's a good selection of salmon based deliciousness and some food without salmon. We enjoyed watching a little girl catch a big fat salmon. I'm sure her parents went home with it, having paid $30 per kg for the privilege.
D.
Cute wee shop! Love that you can go and feed the salmon for a small donation my children absolutely loved it. Excellent outside seating space bit cramped inside but that's ok. Rave over the chicken sushi it is absolutely amazing I'm guessing the salmon Sushi is the same I haven't managed to get past the chicken sushi to try it! Husband loved the pies said they were one of the best pies he's had in a long time. Definitely recommend the stop for something different.
A.
A very nice place with much better service over the holidays (Jan 2022) than expected.
We salmon Benedict , big breakfast, Salmon bagel, Bao buns, scrambled eggs, waffles and everything is highly recommended. Approx 16-18$ per serving.
Whole salmon is quite expensive if u want to take away at 30$/kg. They do allow kids to try fishing (free) n if u catch one u can take it away at 50$/kg price. Which is rubbishy expensive.
So stick to eating :) overall bill 200$ with 5 coffees (5$ each) Soo not too bad.
T.
The sushi was some of the best I've ever had. My son did the catch-a-fish experience and it was so cool. He really enjoyed it. We'll be back next time we're down that side of the country.
V.
Super fresh salmon fillet at really affordable price. Highly recommended!
Update 1: Very grateful to High Country Salmon for supplying us with super fresh salmon during the level four lockdown!
Update 2: Visited the farm from Auckland on 1/1/22, the cafe was super busy with long queue, we had to visit the cafe twice to be able to taste the sashimi. The lady at the counter was so kind to get me the large sashimi. All the sashimi and salmon fish pieces were super fresh!
R.
The best grilled Salmon we have ever eaten especially with the Verde sauce. The smoked Salmon was excellent too. Free taster is definitely worth trying. Didn't notice any difference to normal Sushi. You can catch your own fish at $30per kilo. Avg weight caught is about 3-4kg. The people I saw doing it seemed really happy.
You can go to the canals just down the road and catch wild or escaped Salmon. I saw people walking away with 4 big ones between 2 people. But I also fished for 4 days without a bite.
c.
One of must visit restaurants if you travel around Mt Cook and Tekapo Lake. Tasty! Fresh! Cheap! No need check the reviews Just go and enjoy the Freah Salmon🐟 You can try to feed Salmons for free too!
T.
Awesome place.
About a 2 hour drive from QST
You can feed the salmon here with the little container of food they provide (they also have a donation box which goes towards the food you don't have to donate but even a gold coin is appreciated)
The food here is beautiful.
The freshest salmon you can get
We had the sashimi which was the best we have ever had, smooth and silky and beautiful with the soy sauce and Wasabi (pictured one was about $11 but they have a massive one for about $30 but this one was enough for two)
The eggs benny was very good
But the salmon chowder was amazing! Big chunks of salmon rich and creamy and the veges were nice and tender just what was needed for a cold day.
They also have a lovely fireplace which kept us warm with our meal.
They sell whole salmon, a range of smoked and cured ones and salmon fins and also honey products aswell.
Support small buisnesses and don't whinge about pricing the pricing here is good and well worth what you get!
S.
The hot smoked salmon wings are beautiful .
Very well priced and we were lucky enough to get 30% off on selected packs.
R.
Fun place to stop for a little one. Feeding the fish was a highlight with lots of squeals as the big salmon fought over the food.
J.
Free to visit. Worth a visit. You can even feed the salmon for free. Can also buy some delicious salmon dishes from the restaurant. Very friendly staffs. Have the option to catch our own fish from the farm.
Y.
I am a salmon lover, found this amazing company from other friends, delivery just 2 days from South Island to north island. Well packed with food safe ice packed, fresh and ready to cook, highly recommend if you are salmon lover too; )
R.
Great Friendly Staff. Got Zero fish at the Canals that day so Ended up getting one here lol.
K.
If you love salmon sashimi, it worth a shop here. We order sashimi, grilled salmon and salmon wings. They are all fresh and tasty. My little one love to feed the salmon (They provide small container of food for free).
D.
Neat place for a bit of a break in the heat of the day. Feeding the salmon is always fun. Take a pair of polarized glasses and it will make the experience 100% better. I pop in here for a cold beverage and a break from the canals and its worth it. There's some good food on offer too but it is hard to ignore the pens of lively fish and stand there watching them for a while. You can even pay to catch one, pretty neat place. Worth visiting
A.
Stopped in for lunch. Prices for salmon are just excellent and there were a number of buyers popping in. I had looked at the menu online and waited for the freshly made Salmon Bao Buns, which were sublime and very filling. I mentioned that the menu wasn't very well located, (away from the mainly sushi/sashimi cabinet and after the till), so ask when you go in so not to miss out :) There is a large outdoor seating area with plenty of tables, covered and out in the sun. Feeding salmon great for young and old alike.
J.
I love salmon. So it was cool to see them swimming and all. However, I was a bit disappointed with the taste of their sashimi. The meat was but tough, and not that tasty. Still worth the stop.
I.
Awesome place to visit to see how salmon is farmed. You can try a large selection of salmon dishes and purchased fresh and smoked salmon. Prices are about double of the supermarket, but the quality is a lot higher. You can also feed the salmon and watch them jump as well as fish for it
D.
Actually fished at Ohau B Canal in Twizel. Caught a 8lb Salmon. Used a 1/4 oz jig head with an orange paddle tail soft bait minnow. 8pm Saturday 5/2/2022. Was there an hour. Got lucky.
S.
We always love stopping by here on our road trips it had been a few years and the kids loved feeding the salmon. We had missed the chance to cat h our own but thats ok. 😘
M.
Great place to stop and rest and get your salmon fix if you're a fan of them! The salmon are fresh and really good. I personally tried the pie and the burger. The texture of the pie had a slight crunch and filling of the pie was ample, where the salmon remain flaky and tender.
The burger patty was slightly charred, but I like it that way, and it not be for you. The salmon filling was okay, nothing mindblowing, but if eat it again because, well, I love burgers.
The sashimi were all readily available and I bought it for a few friends. No complains from them, so that's good. I expect it to be fresh since they rear their own salmon, but I've heard horror stories before after consuming their salmon. Probably was an isolated case since all of us didn't run the to toilet.
Will definitely be back for more menu items!
C.
Really enjoy their food. Worth a stop to feed the fish and get all kinds of tasty salmon products
D.
Salmon is fresh from the water, tastes yummy and is suitable for kids and adults..
W.
Amazing sashimi and salmon chowder. What a nice place to come to en route to Lake Tekapo.
Eggs salmon benedict and the waffles with mascapone was also very good on our second visit.
j.
Ohau Canal B freedom camping site. Over looking salmon farm. Great location for campers just out if Twizel. What a sunset!
C.
One of the best places to stop on the road trip either for toilet break or eat fresh salmon and hot pies. It gets packed lunch time with inside and outside dining area. Worth the visit and you see the food photos..
J.
We went at 9am to feed the salmon, and my son thoroughly enjoyed this. The salmon didn't disappoint and it sas interesting to see how they are farmed. Chill experience.
E.
Beautiful spot right before (or after) Twizel. Just make sure you stop here, even if only to get a bit of salmon to take away, lot's of times they even have a bit of salmon to taste. Absolutely loved the smoked salmon, bought a small container to take with me. I had lunch there, a Salmon Chowder. Not the typical (not creamy potato white based) chowder but tasted really nice. Had a nice cold organic ginger beer with it. Really nice view from the terrace at the back. Also really nice and fun that you can feed some Salmon fish for free. Lovely staff and cafe.
C.
The salmon sashimi is so fresh and amazingly different to what we’re used to. If you go outside normal peak lunch periods, you’ll miss all the tour buses and get it all to yourself. Most of the meals on the menu are very good - we loved the kebab, sashimi and soba the most. Would definitely come back the next time I’m around the area - we doubled back so we could come here twice!
C.
We broke up our trip to Christchurch here and loved the experience of catching these beauties. They tasted sooo good as well. Cant wait for our next trip.
H.
If anyone is passing through to Twizel
They need to stop at the salmon farm
People here are very friendly, their salmon is beautiful, their sandwiches are really yummy, and the kids can get to feed the salmon as well
s.
Awesome place to stop by and have some food and fun, and learn a bit about salmon farming. Even my parents and I (full grown adults, FYI) enjoyed feeding the salmon, and watching them jump up. Wide range of fresh and smoked and frozen salmon products available, as well as prepared food, and good prices too. Totally worth the visit if you are coming this way.
s.
I love this salmon farm. You can enjoy feeding the salmon for free and enjoy salmon menus in the restaurant. The toilets are clean. And don"t forget to stop by the lake on the other side of the road. It's a good spot to take photos
n.
Delicious coffee... make sure to order a large, only 50c more than standard and comes in a lovely cupable pottery style mug. We had the salmon mornay pies, very nice filling served in a soft style pastry.
Friendly staff.
You can feed the salmon, with free salmon food... and watch as others do. It's fun to watch as the salmon often actually leap out of the water!!! Kids especially love this 😊 there's plenty of seating, parking and toilets on site. Well worth a visit. And be sure to go to the shop on the way out ... fresh salmon steaks, whole and half salmon, hot and cold smoked salmon for sale. All looks delicious and very very fresh 😁
D.
A great stop of salmon, cooked, smoked or raw. The facilities are expanding with better amenities from our last visit with more walkways that allow for disabled access and more (cleaner) toilets. Good parking for even the busiest time (and it does get busy)
Good to take the kids to see the fish pens and feed the fish (for a small donation)
Food in general is good, but for some reason our sashimi salmon did not seem as fresh as our previous visit with the fish a little soft, while last time every bite was with a crunchy texture which I missed this time. But the fish roe was great and recommended!
Will visit again but was a little disappointed
Y.
It is a good place to stop and have some food. Nice food! Feeding salmon is interesting and it is free.
Also, there are a lot of ducks on the salmon farm. I don’t know why.
F.
Great to have fresh salmon meals on the way to Mt Cook
It is so easy to be spotted because it is just located beside state highway
Many choices from Western style meal to Asian style meal. Most of them start from $12 only. Very tasty and fresh
G.
Very busy. Great salmon. Purchased 4 vac packed pieces and two different types of cold smoked pieces. VERY GOOD QUALITY. Will be back, as it is getting more difficult to purchase quality product
S.
There are little pottles of fish food out to feed the huge salmon🐟🐟🐟
Great place to buy fresh/frozen salmon🐟at a fab price & the lovely staff ice pack it for you too🐟...Mmmmm it tasted yummy too😋😋😋
V.
We accidentally ran into this place and were pleasantly surprised. You can snack on fresh salmon here and even feed the fish for free. We had salmon sashimi and that was one of the best fresh salmons i have had: fresh and tender - 😋!
F.
This was such a cool experience and we bought some beetroot smoked salmon . Exquisite!
G.
Here you get to see Salmon farming take place and feed the salmon too! Post activity one can enjoy fresh meals like Sushi, Sashimi, Salmon Chowder...and so much more!
C.
Great looking salmon. Didn't eat here but bought salmon to take home.
T.
Its a good place to stop for a rest, a cup of coffee or salmon snacks. The place is getting more and more commercial than few years ago. Salmon is a must try. I have the salmon burger today and its not as good as expected.
M.
good food even if you don't like salmon, but quite busy and crowded during peak times
A.
Awesome place, so you should definitely stop by! You can feed the caged salmon for free or even enjoy the best salmon pie. Want to buy some fresh salmon to take back home? Well, this is the place, no doubts about it.
I.
Salmon farm in the middle of nowhere. But I like it. We can feed the salmon for free. We can buy fresh Sashimi and some salmon product. The toilet is very clean. One of the recommended places to visit in NZ.
T.
Just phenomenal! The freshest salmon sashimi we have ever eaten. Went back for another box because it was just too good to resist. If you want fresh, buttery, skilfully sliced salmon for a very reasonable price, this is the place for you. Only complaint - no other salmon will ever live up to this!
n.
You will pass by here when you on your way from tekapo to wanaka, or the other way round. Just right beside the road and you will see a big sign board of high country salmon there.
The salmon is very fresh here and the price is good though. Good deal.
Must eat food when you to New Zealand
S.
An awesome place to visit great food, fun feeding the salmon and being able to watch people catch big fat salmon highly recommended
p.
This was a rather interesting find on our way down from Tekapo. Its great to see a little shop at the front but quite disappointed the prices were almost at retail prices elsewhere. The cafe was absolutely chocka with people which made the place seem a bit cramped, but the bonus was the free salmon feed made available to visitors to feed the fish.
M.
Delicious salmon at a reasonable price. The remaining Chinese signage everywhere reminds you of everything pre-covid, although it is still a very touristy spot.
C.
Came here for breakfast after the O/H did a skydive. The scrambled eggs on toast with smoked salmon was to die for. You also get to feed the salmon for free and see them jump out of the water too.
J.
The cafe has the ambience of a working fish farm, but that's fine. It sells salmon and it's beautifully fresh and perfect.
A.
Whether you are feeding the salmon, or the other way, it's worth a stop on the way through (or, as we did, a stop in each direction). For me the smoked salmon on scrambled eggs was my favourite dish through several days in the region.
R.
A great place to see and feed live cultured inland salmon.. you can also eat fresh salmon at the bistro shop / cafe. On your way out, freshly packed salmon are ready for the taking for the trip back home. Very convenient. A very busy place during peak season.
D.
Good selection of salmon for sale, cheaper than others in the area... the dude in the shop, fantastic guy, so friendly, interested in conversation... makes a difference in life when people care about there work... employee of the month, buy him a beer... more people should adopt his attitude towards customers and life...
D.
don't miss it! we got some beautiful fillets here for dinner. free to feed the fish but out some coins in the donation, it's only fair for the free fun with the fishes. plus you can sit down for a menu meal, pies in the cabinet too
J.
This is a beautiful spot for a stop We only used the cafe but also watched a number of young families enjoying the Salmon farm. Nice coffee and welcoming staff
A.
Jan 2021: can feed the salmon for free at the back. Salmon was pretty good, not excellent despite being just cut - they had sold out for a while but were preparing some more at the back. Staff was a bit rude and didn't want to explain the size/price difference between small medium and large
N.
Cool cafe and viewable fish farm. Opportunity to catch your own salmon which you pay for by the kg. Fish feeding is free.
N.
Good food selection, good coffee and entertainment for kids. My 4yrs old daughter loved feeding fish so we have to come back again(^o^)
Y.
Definitely get your salmon sashimi fix here! Very well priced and no charge on their soya sauce and wasabi! You get to feed their salmon fishes for free and they are huge!
W.
Awesome break from Wanaka or from Lake Tekapo. You get to feed the salmon for free and the food is pretty decent and cheap. 10 bucks for a filling salmon chowder, say no more
i.
Juicy salmon sashimi. Must try. I think this is the best salmon in south island nz. U can see the pool full of salmon. And we can try to feed them. So relaxing. And the teriyaki salmon bones is soo yummy.
C.
We enjoy watching and feeding salmon but if you want to catch by their own rod cost 30$/kg
G.
Sushi is just stunning. Great location and lovely outside on a good day.
B.
Beautiful Manuka smoked salmon to die for we called in the next day and purchased more. Yummy.
B.
We stopped here quickly 15min before closing. Salmon pies unfortunately sold out so we bought the teriyaki salmon wings. So tasty and tender! Nice sitting out on the deck. Coming late was good too because there were no bus loads of tourists.
J.
Good food and excellent experience in salmon fishing!
H.
you can have the freshest salmon sashimi at reasonable price!!!! and you must try their salmon pie.. it was so good.... totally recommend to visit this place if you are a salmon lover..
A.
High Country Salmon is the most delicious salmon I have ever eaten. I love the fact that it comes from glacier waters in the South Island
H.
Nice little shop and you can feed the salmon for free while waiting for your food! They also sell frozen salmon out front. Definitely a must try for all salmon lovers. 😛 Already wishing that I can go back now. Only thing is that the soy sauce contains alcohol so if you don't take alcohol like me, you can avoid it! I brought my own sweet chili to have with my salmon.
D.
I dropped here on the way to Queenstown to have a quick lunch. So fresh salmon as they feed salmons right in front of the store. Taste of sashimi was great, too! Nice place to visit!
G.
What a lovely spot. And the food is yummy and reasonably priced if somewhat cheap I thought for salmon. Can even catch your own👍
F.
Great place for free salmon feeding. Huge salmon fish and great options at their Cafe as well.
a.
Great fresh salmon sashimi. Yum
M.
Cool place with free salmon feeding. The prepackaged salmon sashimi that is supposedly packed in the morning and consumed later in the day does not taste as fresh as expected though.
Y.
Salmon is great but personally i don’t recommend order food there. Rice and noodle are both under average.
Come and buy some salmon and then head to Tekapo is a better choice
I.
Great Tasting Salmon, stark reality.
Had a look around the Salmon ponds and it is hard not to be hit by the reality of how food comes into being.
The Salmon tastes incredible and we bought quite a lot for Christmas.
The actual farm however is a true consumer operation. While there are small containers of pallets for children to feed fish. The farm is in place for the production of Salmon.
It was a super busy day, and the cafe was over run by messy tables and people.
R.
The salmon are huge!! And we get to feed the fish for free too. Just had some snacks while stop pass by. Great experience in general.. something different!!
ธ.
Feed the salmon, then eat it. The recommended menu is only fresh salmon sushi. Another possible dish is salmon rice curry.
Y.
One of the better meals I had in New Zealand. I tried the Sashimi 225g for $22, it was definitely fresh. I also ordered two comfort food for the cold weather, the chowder and curry. Both dishes have salmon bits in it, simply delicious and nutritious.
Do choose to have your lunch here compared to the salmon shop at Lake Pukaki Information Center as it has more food options to choose from. Though the downside is that this place is extremely crowded, so you have to fight for seats.
C.
Nice place to eat fresh salmon in many different ways. Went there twice, not disappointed at all !!!
G.
We found this place by accident on the way to Wanaka. It was a great find. It's essentially a salmon farm that offers some of its products at the small cafe. We ordered a burger and some sashimi. Both were delicious and well priced. There're also a couple of feeding ponds at the back of the cafe that offer a bit of fun with the salmon.
W.
Great fresh salmon!!
Great range to choose from.
Can feed the fish.
S.
Great stop for a quick bite. You can’t see much of the farm but it’s still a great shop if you’re interested in good salmon.
M.
DELICIOUS FRESH SALMON. you get to feed the salmon for free as well. Definitely a great road trip pit stop
D.
Nice place for a pit stop to load up on everything salmon. Can't get any fresher than the salmon straight from the pen next to the cafe.
R.
Great place to enjoy live feeding to Salmon, there are time schedule to feed them. Make sure you check the time and visit. The place is located just near to the main road. There is reataurant to have tea, coffee and snacks. Very beautiful place.
J.
Beautiful fresh salmon, very reasonable prices and lots of variety to choose from. Best salmon I've had so far in NZ! Would highly recommend the tasting platter
S.
Love the food. Salmon is so fresh. Came here twice in 2 days and dont forget to take away ice cream for the road 😍
W.
What a great place. The food is awesome. Prices are cheap. Great location for a rest between Christchurch & Queenstown. Definitely a place to check out....
J.
Had two breakfasts there - went back the next day because there was more we wanted to try. Very well priced and delicious.
C.
Good place to stop and let children feed some Salmon up close. Good price on fish here as well.
世.
I like to come here for the sashimi because it is fresh, but today when I went there to have sashimi again, maybe is because too many people,so the sashimi not feeling nice and even have skin on the sashimi, this time really make me disappointed.
T.
They have a free feeds for the fishes and offers fresh dishes of salmons.
Z.
Awesome place. Can feed salmon, have a coffee or even have a full salmon meal.
S.
Very original place with pretty good offerings. Raw fish is a sure bet there. Friendly staff too.
H.
Best yet fresh salmon ever... u even can feed the salmon for free.. the food is super delicious 👍 definately will be back when pass by
K.
Their salmon is delicious and they always add a bit extra when you order online.
E.
Salmon Sashimi is fresh and delicious.
You can feed salmon here
T.
Great place to stop for a fresh salmon snack/meal. Fun to feed the fish, which are large and fast!
V.
Must try their salmon curry rice is very delicious and free feeding the salmon there
Y.
Nice and fresh salmon. Bought the sushi and it tasted very good. Free feeding to the salmons is very surprising.
W.
Salmon food is actually very good and fresh, also good view. However, too many tour groups sometimes make the place noisy which is not matched what it should be. The host should control and maintain better.
P.
There's even a area where they let you catch your own salmon 🤯
M.
Plenty of other food to eat if you aren't a fan of Salmon.
W.
The kids loved feeding the fish, the food was spot on & good value.
L.
My friends and I were passing through and decided to stop. We thoroughly enjoyed the 500g for $35 nzd. We thought it was a great deal. The sashimi was delicious. Best I've had in awhile. Looked up the feed and some of the sustainability of the farm. Seems like New Zealand as a whole is committed to making the right choices. I posted a pic of what they listed in their feed
If you're in the area and enjoy sashimi, this is definitely a great place to stop, stretch your legs, and enjoy the view of the lake. The view was also spectacular. Didn't wait longer than 5 minutes even with the Chinese New year crowds. Thanks for providing a pleasurable experience!
K.
So cool feeding the Salmon! Beautiful fresh fillers too.
L.
Great Food Good coffee
Excellent supply of salmon to buy and well packed to travel with.
A must to visit when travelling through the area
S.
This place is well worth a visit while on the road. We had their Salmon green Curry, which was exceptionally tasty, and great value at $10.
A.
Lovely free salmon feeding. Definitely try the fresh salmon sashimi afterwards!
T.
The salmon is amazing and it is a great place to take the kids. The things that are frustrating is the actual building and facility is tired and needs up grading, they always seem understaffed so there are long wait times for buying counter food or salmon and a long wait for any cooked food.
It is still worth a visit though.
A.
Nice staff, yum food, free feed the salmon. Our bonus of the trip.
j.
Best salmon ever! We couldn’t get enough of the cold smoked salmon with cream cheese and crackers!! Only if we could bring it back to Australia! #nofilter
김.
Interesting texture!
I am not salmon person though
I love to eat again!!!
J.
A place worth visiting if you want to try out fresh salmon. You can also buy fresh salmon and sushi. You also get to feed salmon! Can be a great stop for lunch on way to Queenstown.
S.
Stopped for late lunch. Food wa good & coffee was very good.
C.
Nice fresh salmon , very happy with my Japanese style of salmon miso noodles
D.
Amazing salmon sashimi and salmon bento box. Salmon was very fresh.
L.
We stopped here because I love salmon and it was an oasis. Service was good and the salmon mixed sushi plate was very good. So good we purchased two more to take away with us.
You can purchase salmon pellets and feed the salmon which is very entertaining as they fight for it and sometimes leap out of the water. That was fun.
We will return when in the area next for sure.
W.
Beautiful scenery with wonderful salmon , you must take a rest here before the long distance driving
曹.
You can feed salmon for free and taste the fresh salmon sashimi, or buy some frozen salmon back home.
A.
Glad we stopped. Fresh Salmon sashimi, nice stop for sunshine, but it was the salmon chowder that we’ll remember later. SO Good!
張.
Wow, sashimi is so fresh and no fishy. The first time I arrived here about 4 pm, sashimi was sold out. So this time, I arrived at noon and finally I have a chance to enjoy the brilliant sashimi.
C.
There is fresh salmon and sushi that you can serve it as your lunch.
Also you may feed the salmon.
If you stay there for a few days, do remember to buy some raw salmon in the store for cooking.
A.
One can feed the Salmons. Restaurant is fabulous , salmon cury with rice was fantastic. Salmon wings , salmon with rice cake everything was excellent. Fish lovers should visit to experience.
L.
Awesome interlude - felt like we had been driving the undulating hills for ages and all of a sudden a salmon farm at lunchtime - totally unexpected
K.
Highly recommend the salmon platter, was delicious and good value. The location was incredibly busy though so if you don't like busy places then this is not the place for you
K.
We stopped in here to have a look and buy some salmon. Ended up catching a 7kg fish with Sam holy hekemaba. Sam was real cool and we watched him help a few fisher people before us great guy. Definitely worth stopping in here. We've been eating salmon for days now but it's soooo good
i.
Fair price, delicious, worth to visit👍🏻
Also yaou can feed the salmon at their farm free too.
If you visit Tekapo or Mount Cook, take a short visit to this restaurant, take a break, they serve various of coffee too.
And if you from Asia, they serve rice 🍚 😊
C.
A salmon farm selling fresh fresh-water salmon & sushi. Feeding allowed.
C.
What a place! At these prices, you can’t afford not to eat fresh salmon. Some of the tastiest salmon sushi I’ve had in NZ so we went back and bought more. Cool outdoor decking area to eat and feed the fish. Decent coffee also. Highly recommend.
M.
A must food stop! Delicious salmon curry and salmon burgers. Highly recommended. Extra fun feeding the salmon in a beautiful surrounding.
S.
Great place enjoyed and bought fresh Salmon value for money.
Lovely people at the cafe.
V.
Fresh food good tast for Salmon and well maintain Salmon factory along side the road.
B.
Best value soy decaf coffee to date! Lovely staff. Great spot to stop.
C.
Salmon is fresh and tasty, you can feed Salmon there, it’s a good experience.
d.
Delicious salmon sashimi and pan baked salmon. Im sure I will come again if I return to nz.
A.
If you love fresh salmon it's Must Do when going to Queenstown by car.
About 1 hour from Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo and 3 hours from Queenstown
Z.
Great place, they selling the best salmon and the best of best is you can fishing at cana
A.
Free feeding the lively salmon. Saw some staff being rude to customers. Actually the sashimi and sushi tasted just fair.
P.
Fresh salmon, sushi, sashimi and varieties! You can feed the salmons swimming in ponds around. Can't wait to go back. A complete salmon lover's paradise.
EDIT: Now what you see above is the initial hype. We've visited a few more times over the months and it's just gone downhill. The rolls are stuffed with carrots and/or vegetables. Stick to the sushi selection. My boyfriend ordered a bowl and it had three tiny pieces of fish. The roll literally had more. We're gonna give it a pass from now on :)
M.
Best tasting salmon cooked straight from fresh water. I'm coming back to try everything on their menu. My friend can't stop raving about it and I couldn't agree more. Anyone travelling around this area - stop by and try their yummy salmon.
C.
I’ve been here twice, I love here. Best salmon ever! You must try !
M.
Fresh and delicious..... definitely worth a try for salmon lovers
Z.
You must stop in here if you're traveling through. The food and coffee is delicious and the staff are very friendly. Not to mention how reasonably priced everything is! So good. This place has been a favorite of mine ever since I first stopped by 🙂.
M.
Nice quick stop for a snack! Tried their salmon platter!!!
S.
I love the salmon. Soft n moist. Good price too
r.
Thesalmons tasted soooo fresh and sweet.ypu should come and try. The price also cheaper compared to supermarket.
G.
Nothing much happening today as the fish weren't being fed. Interesting to see the extent of the farm.
C.
Cute little cafe attached to an outdoor area where you can feed the salmon. I always make it a point to stop here when I’m driving past :)
H.
Lovely fresh sashimi grade salmon
Generous portions
500g for 35nzd at the time of visit.
They provide complementary soya sauce and wasabi paste
Love the chewiness, would definitely recommend sashimi lovers to stop by this place.
You can also buy smoked salmon and salmon fillets to cook here
Toilets are available.
Parking lots are available
This place has varying opening hours, visiting between 9am - 5pm is safe for summer and winter time...
you can take a look at the picture i uploaded for more details.
S.
Purchased salmon through their online shop a few weeks ago and goodness it's delicious!! Delivery was great, and we got a tonne of meals out of it. Froze some and it tasted amazing.
This will definitely become our go-to for fresh salmon!
T.
Fresh fish with decent taste. Especially the sashimi and the salmon curry with rice.
Price is very affordable.
S.
Lovely place and food
s.
The Salmons were good. The whole experience was good specially if u have a kid.
M.
Had a delicious breakfast, fed some salmon, then my daughter caught her own salmon from their catch cage. Exciting experience for her, we get to go home with 2 large salmon filets. Friendly and very helpful staff
Y.
Amazing experience catching your own fish. Was also very cool they offer an eco-friendly packaging option so you don’t have to take a huge load of polystyrene home. Would give this a 6 star review if I could!!
N.
Great place to stop to the kids a chance to see something new, you can feed the salmon for free, with an option to make a donation. They make a good coffee here.
Of course you can buy some really fresh salmon here too!
K.
Feed and eat the fish, good coffee, fresh salmon. Try the salmon chowder!
N.
5 stars for the salmon feeding that’s all I did tho
S.
Lovely fresh salmon to enjoy after attending Twizel Salmon and wine Festival
J.
Great place for a drive-by stop. Best Salmon around, just take care that if you want boneless, you look for salmon that's specifically boneless. Feeding the fishes is great though, they go a bit nuts for it.
S.
They make many different delicious dishes with their fresh salmon. They even let you feed the salmon.
N.
Small but quite nice cafe. The food was quite good and love it. Will come back for sure.
C.
Ordered the poke bowl, a bit disappointed with the ingredients. No salmon roe and seaweed.
R.
Fresh and Creative Salmon dishes. Friendly staff and opportunity to feed the salmon too.
F.
Perfect place to stopby from a long driving to Queenstown... experience salmon feeding and enjoy the beautiful lake scenery... help yourself with a number of salmon dishes that is quite japanese like (sushi with wasabi and shoyu) and the long black coffee is to die for... the ambience of the cafe is very warmth and can enjoy your lunch or teatime peacefully... will certainly come again to this wonderful stop
R.
Below average sashimi, ironically didn't feel very fresh and had a few scales. Burger was fine, but sadly was made with fried salmon, so it tasted like any other crumbed fish burger.
D.
Delicious food at an amazing price. Best sushi we have had in New Zealand. Fish was tender and fatty.
Also get to feed salmon and watch them jump out of the water. Lots of pretty ducks around too.
S.
Friendly staff and really nice hot smoked salmon sushi
D.
Good for the fresh salmon, the frozen one is a bit pricey than city, but is OK in this area!
F.
Was a cool place to stop along the journey to see how big the salmon are. If you had kids would be great as you can feed them in the ponds at the front. The food looked great we had just had lunch but couldn't resist some salmon sashimi and it didn't disappoint.
R.
Their Salmon Mornay pie is a must try!! So so good!
B.
Great place for fishing and eating salmon
J.
Fun little pitstop to see some farmed salmon. The salmon itself was a little tough but it was worth a try.
D.
Excellent Salmon. Tasty Funky fresh Fish eaten at the car park in front of the shop.
y.
It provides unlimited wasabi which is Super great! There’s lots of food to choose, like salmon sushi, salmon pie, and etc.
A.
Came here for the Salmon Farm and got to feed the salmons for free. A great pit stop in Twizel.
M.
Beautiful place and have a Salmon for tea.Yummy😊
H.
They plant fresh water salmon, which is lighter in flavor and firmer in texture. I like their salmon burger.
L.
Wonderful and experience especially with young ones to be introduced to fishing
P.
Fun & great to watch live salmon feeding.
Can refresh with lite drinks & food be sure to buy so fresh Salmond for dinner etc.
M.
So fresh and yummo. Unlike any other salmon we've ever had.
N.
This place was alright to have a meal. Maybe we came too early to the place but it’s definitely the open hour so they should have more options for breakfast on display. When we came, the display was quite empty but still can order some meals (a bit limited - bagel with smoked salmon, poke bowl, egg Benedict - the prices was about $12+) It was a good meal but could have been better. You can kill some time waiting for your meal by feeding the salmon, that’s entertaining
A.
I have just known u guys as was looking for salmon roes. Feel happy that I found you. Fast delivery, reasonable price, awesome products. I know where I am getting the salmon from now. Thank you!
Angel Blenheim
d.
Fresh and really good quality salmon. Stop on the road and buy the bagel, it is the best!!!
B.
Nice place for taking a rest. Prices are acceptable though there are many tourists.
D.
Great food and friendly efficient service. Highly recommend the grilled salmon main. Great to be able to see and feed the fish too.
M.
Nice place to get some good salmon, feed the salmon and enjoy the views. Not much to "do" except eat and buy.
J.
Best salmon, kumara and lemon soup ever!
s.
Fantastic great friendly and helpful staff my son loved catching his fish
N.
Stopped to buy Salmon - the Salmon was great. Fresh and very tasty. Definitely stop there again.
A.
Great set up. Sushi with salmon - tasty
T.
Tastes different. Very clean and fatty salmon. Friendly staff. Reasonable price. Be sure to hop online and sign up for their membership for discounts on the day!
P.
Great for showing people aquaculture. Amazing salmon. Only suggestions would be to consider using more environmentally friendly food containers. It's rare to find cool fish related items - would be cool to have fish sculptures etc for sale.
C.
A very worthwhile stop. Salmon is extremely tasty and (imo) better than the more conmercialised Mt Cook Alpine Salmon.
K.
Loving the sashimi here as it has the “bouncy” texture! Initially ordered the $11 one but end up ordered another $11.
Personally, I think High Country’s sashimi (fresh raw salmon) is the best among Anatoki (Takaka) and Mt Cook Alpine one.
J.
Their salmon fins are freaking tasty but...
I ended up getting food poisoning today after eating some of their sushi unfortunately.
The premises are very dirty, and the plates are not washed properly.
The refrigerator for the drinks may be broken.. the drinks were all room temperature.
a.
Very interesting "Tourist Trap" visit that turned in to a very pleasant coffee and entertainment stop..saw the salmon being fed and talked with a well informed local about the nearby fishing scene.Retail shop on site sells a variety of salmon products...mostly smoked, and offers a range of polybins to keep your purchases cold while travelling. Coffee was good, and reasonably priced ( $5) large cup, good clean cafe and food, but the salmon prices are set for tourists I guess...it couldn't be any closer to the product source so is fresh, but I can buy cheaper in my local supermarket
k.
Delicious shared platter for two for lunch. Highly recommend stopping for lunch. Very expensive to catch a fish but really enjoyed our visit
B.
Feed the salmon catch a salmon or eat a salmon. Lots of choice and fun to be had here.
C.
Worth visiting and have a quick lunch. Went there with my family for lunch and bought their meal which were better than expected - their curry and chowder were delicious, miso noodle was okay. The best part is (of course) their delicious and fresh salmon. Do note that there are limited seats and may get crowded. There are plenty of parking lots as well.
Can visit their small salmon farm right behind the restaurant and they provide free food to be fed to their (large) salmons.
There's a small shop beside the carpark to buy their fresh salmon products. Considered it is their salmon farm, their salmon are quite costly, but we bought it nevertheless as their salmon are really tasty and fresh!
H.
Had chowder, sashimi and sushi. Was cold and rainy, kinda perfect day for the chowder. Sashimi was good as well. Don't go for sushi, the rice is cold, almost feel hard to chew.
A.
Love visiting this place and feeding the fish. You can even catch a salmon there now. There are a wide range of salmon products for sale but my favourite is the cold smoked salmon.
J.
Great little place to stop..Salmon pate and and the Sushi were so delicious.
D.
Freshest salmon I've ever eaten! Not only that, but their breakfast were amazing oh, and the eggs benedict to die for! Also, my wife is still drooling over the waffles she ate there. She doesn't like salmon, and she didn't want to like it there, but she did...
J.
Slightly disappointed with the salmon. It was rather fishy and tasteless. Free fish feeding available
M.
Impressive !!! Purchased lovely looking salmon, and discovered on unwrapping at home that a bag of ice had been included to keep it chilled. Attention to details like that are REALLY appreciated 🙂
J.
Very interesting
Educational
Free fish food
Watch the leap
Good fun
Lovely sunset
M.
Very interesting stop at little cost. Good coffee and service with a smile.
J.
Really fresh salmon. We really enjoyed the curry and the soup
Kids can look forward to the fish feeding at regular timings.
There’s a breakfast menu but note that breakfast items like the Salmon Congee we wanted to try were not available after 11am.
If you are staying at a place which allows you to cook, you can buy salmon to take home. They do give you a ice pack and you can buy a foam box if needed.
S.
Awesome food and atmosphere. Free fish feeding aswell.
A.
Ive never had bad sushi from here.Weather passing though in the morning or evening
Fresh and tasty 😋
M.
Great place to taste some fresh salmon from the farm! Nice to have a sit in the coffee terrace and enjoy the views and swimming pools where you can feed the salmons!! Don't miss the shop where you can get delicious cold smoke salmon or hot smoked salmon wrapped in ice if you want to take away!! ENJOY IT!!!
A.
Beautiful lunch.Enjoyed every bit..had samon chowder for the first time😀🙏
K.
Fresh salmon raised in the fast flowing canal. Super fresh but pretty pricey.
A.
Bit odd
Ordered 6 beagles, which the lady behind the counter had to ask whether that was okay
They brought us coffee twice, which we didn't order
Then someone asked when we were going to order, which we did 8 min earlier
But the beagles were still the best 👍
D.
Well worth a quick visit or lunch break as you pass through town. The sashimi was heavenly. We dug through the freezer for some super fresh salmon steaks and cooked it up for dinner. Amazing!
A few people had told us that we'd get the best coffee here, so we came back the next morning. Unfortunately, the service was slow and the coffee was underwhelming.
P.
Good taste. My only complaint is restaurant closes too early (5 pm)
L.
This is an interesting place to visit. There is a viewing station for you to see salmon up close a cafe which serves amazing seafood chowder amoungst other things. The food and service is great but the best is the salmon..I purchased smoked salmon and cooked it in butter..wow it was delicious.
P.
Beautiful fresh salmon prepared in heaps of different ways. There is a selection to eat there, such as fresh sashimi, but you can also get all sorts of cuts packed up to take away. I bought a bag of the smoked salmon wings, were delicious and great value.
K.
Fresh Sushi and Sashimi...looking forward for Salmon pie that they used to have but not available by the time we stop over for lunch
R.
Large range of salmon for sale - can also feed the fish or catch your own
H.
Smart business model. Let your customers feed the product they will eat. Nice education for the kids on how salmon is 'grown' for human consumption. Tasty shasimi, never eaten it so fresh... The fish was sliced a few hours before we ate it.
F.
We checked the prices online and then did not go there. Prices are not reasonable. They sell the fish directly in their place, but more expensive than the supermarkets that sell norwegian fish from other side of the world! We anticipated to find cheaper salmon there because there is no retailer and no distributer in the selling chain, so it is all their benefit. If they reduce the prices, more people will go there for shopping.
S.
You can feed the fish for free. Worth stopping on your way to have a break if you are travelling with kids. They will love it while you eat some fresh salmon in the cafe.
N.
Good selection of well executed salmon dishes at prices that you'd expect. ;) Definitely worth ticking it off the list.
S.
Good place for a stopover. Kids enjoyed feeding salmon in the pens. Good food. Can buy fresh salmon, which is packed with ice.
S.
Good coffee and tasty salmon chowder. Salmon chowder could be hotter though. Quite a popular rest stop.
L.
Beautiful fresh and frozen salmon at a great price. We'll worth a visit.
Y.
Delicious salmon with reasonable price! A good place to stopover/rest between Lake Tekapo/Pukaki and Queenstown.
P.
Always the freshest Salmon Bagels you can buy anywhere on the planet.... and feeding the salmon is always a fun break from the drive....
N.
Since coming to the South Island I have visited 3 salmon farms and High Country Salmon is by far the best!! It was the only one to offer free food to feed the fish. The salmon was cheaper per kg and the fresh produce was tastier!! We had sashimi and it was melt in your mouth delicious! We also bought some fresh salmon and pan fried it. Absolutely beautiful! If you are anywhere near the area it is definitely worth a visit!! 5 *
S.
It is a 5 for the salmon shop and 3 for the cafe. There was limited space in the cafe. It was bitterly cold. A young lass who was an emploee parked herself at the picnic table close to a roaring fire. She would bellow out instructions to people as they came in. Some patrons had to stand. The pie was rather dry a the filling could do with being more moisture in it.. A creamier sauce would of been nice
M.
Fresh salmon, but need more people to help explain the types of cuts
P.
It's a good place to stop by. Take a look at the salmon and feed them (best of all it is free). There is a cafe here , I did not try the food. But honestly we stopped by this place due to poor weather conditions that caused road closures.
I've changed it to 5 stars as the owners replies. Kudos !
K.
Nice view! Tasty salmon with reasonable price.
S.
Best salmon in NZ. Fresh, delicious and packed well for freight to Auckland. Usually arrives within 48 hours. Just popped in to their site as well and had a great time feeding the salmon.
J.
If you like salmon this is a place for you, good variety of food, and the kids get to feed live salmon in a holding pin. Well worth a stop!
A.
Fresh salmon, and alive salmon. People can feed salmon and to watch them, lots fun for children. A nice stop for long drive.
M.
Worth a stop on your way through. Feed the salmon and grab a bit to eat. Both were good.
P.
Fantastic service and quality of salmon. Thank you to the High Country Salmon team and especially Cheryl.
A.
Sashimi was fresh! Sourced directly from their own farm.
A.
We just had the perfect on the road snack, Salmon curry and the Salmon poke bowl! Excellent food quality and super tasty. Would highly recommend stopping here. Good coffee too!
t.
Is free to feed the salmon, so much fun. And in this restaurant it provide hot dish. if you arrive at dawn, hopefully some dishes or snack mark in a good price.
E.
If you love salmon, you have to come here. If you don't, you can still enjoy watching the fish. Free entry, catch your own salmon (not free) and yummy!
b.
It's not a bad place to stop but don't make it an integral part of your day.
It's just a small cafe and a small area out back where you can feed the salmon (free which is always nice but the water's cloudy so not very exciting).
The food is so-so. Would recommend the Salmon Curry. Would not recommend the miso. Sashimi won't blow you away but it's alright.
B.
It was great feeding the salmons but food and the attitude of the service staffs were appalling. What i'd recommend is to just come in, feed the salmon and buy the fish. You can safely skip having a meal there.
s.
A must visit especially when you are traveling with kids, so much fun for them. Free salmon feed and great salmon at competitive price.
P.
Food was perfect! It is quite busy and a lot of people just come to feed salmon (as it’s free) and ducks, so it may be hard to find a table. It also takes some time to get your food unless you get something from the rack (they have sashimi and sushi prepared, which also creates some confusion as people looking at those stand in the way of the line). But again, for us the food itself was the main point of getting there so we left happy.
J.
Salmon was delicious, very different from the sea water Salmon and the meat is tight and tasty. The cut was bit disappointing, we were offered toothpicks and the salmon pieces were still attached to each other! Price was not bad. We ordered a Salmon Sashimi 400g and a soup, the soup came as cold... Staff members knew little about the farm and the products.
K.
Great little place to see how salmon is farmed. Can feed the salmon for free. No entry fee. Cafe where you can purchase salmon and/or Cafe food. Can even try fishing for a salmon ( seems to target a kid experience).
C.
Good place to pick up fresh or smoked salmon fillets or whole fish. On-site Cafe serves coffee and a variety of salmon-based fare from sashimi to salmon- burgers and pies. Pricey but worth it. Kiddos can feed the fish, which is kind of cool to watch.
E.
Perfect stop for us on our way to Queenstown. Was hungry and we needed some hot food to combat the cold weather. We ordered chowders and down it in minutes. Mum bought a huge salmon for our dinner later that night. The shop keeper was kind enough to place some ice packs in to keep the salmon fresh. It was quite expensive but the salmon was really tasty. We did justice to it by simply pan frying it. Needless to say we had our omega-3 fixed probably for the whole trip.
J.
Lovely salmon farm, the food was pretty good, we got there close to closing time and all the popular stuff was sold out. We had salmon sashimi, salmon curry, soup and miso noodles. This salmon sashimi is something different, when you bite into it, it feels crispy! Like there is a bite, some sort of crunch to the meat, not your usual mushy sashimi meat, delicious meat. The rest of the dishes were very tasty. Staff was very friendly and helpful - we asked for the miso noodles to be heated up as it had gone cold in the cooler weather and he did it obligingly. The free fish feeding was fun and entertaining for the kids, worth a visit!
E.
A salmon farm just by the road side along the road to Lake Tekapo, to take a break for some shisimi would be a great choice. You can feed the salmon yourself with the feeding stuff provided by the farm, it is an interesting and fun activity. If not enough, you can also buy home some really fresh salmon at super value.
n.
The food was just delicious and the staff is very friendly.
Family friendly place, kids can feed the ducks and fish.
W.
Good selection of salmon based dishes (mostly sushi) and free pots of food for you to feed the live salmon with. Nice stop off on what is otherwise a long drove, and the onsite shop has chilled salmon at very good prices - would recommend. Could do with cleaning the toilets though.
A.
Of course we came for eating salmon. All dishes were in a small bowl and could have had more salmon in it. However they were not bad but also not great. I like the poke bowl the most, also the salmon salad. But the salmon chowder was ok, could have had more unique spices.
In total the prices were ok for these fresh salmon dishes.
At the day of our visit there were lots of construction works. Totally annoying sitting outside and someone is drilling and hammering next to you.
J.
This is a nice stop by the road. They have some dishes with salmon (what else?!) and hot drinks.
I also had the salmon burger and that was pretty good. I recommend it.
I bought a small tray of sashimi and it was under my expectations, there were some fat in the salmon slices that you don't see on the salmon you get in a sushi shop.
But the most disappointing bit was that there were no toilets for clients.
M.
Great fun feeding the salmon and the sashimi is so fresh and tasty.
S.
Enjoyed free salmon feeding. Good cafe with a variety selection. Several salmon cuts including pieces, fillets, sides and mince in tge frozen section.
m.
Great day out for kids who like sashimi. Take home prices barely competitive but you know for sure the salmon is fresh. That's hard to beat.
N.
Absolutely amazing and sweet tasting salmon can be bought here, extremely fresh, and the feeding experience is fun. Staff are friendly and helpful. Must come if you are a big fan of salmon.
S.
Nice and clean, you eat while you see the fish you are about to eat, with ducks as a bonus. There are feeding times for the fish, which make them far more active and visible. Food served in sushi stile. When we went it was very busy and had to wait a while in the queue, but then it was the Chinese New year holiday. Many Asians.
B.
One can buy lots of fresh salmon and even smoked...cold smoke too. You can have raw sashimi which tasted delicious if you are game in eating raw salmon. Price is reasonable. You could walk on the platform that caged the salmon in the lake and feed the salmon if you like.
E.
Great salmon. Super fresh and great cost.
R.
Good place to get fresh salmon and experience salmon fishing if you haven't done it before.
S.
Great place to buy fresh salmon
O.
Fresh salmon reasonable price
K.
We almost always stop in and get some fresh Salmon to take away as well as feeding the fish which it always fun
M.
Crowded and popular! Fresh salmon smoked salmon etc for sale along with order from the menu food, café cabinet food, sushi, bento box and coffee.
Staff who were called out to help came straight from the office to serve without washing hands or using sterilizer...not a good look!
Picnic tables available to eat your food bought on the premises were under cover and outside.
You can feed the fish for free, pay to catch a fish or watch captive salmon in the big nets jump for the food.
Wheelchair accessible.
K.
Great place for a stop and coffee and walk around the salmon farm (feed the fish) and buy some beautiful fresh salmon to take home.
M.
Lovely place to visit, I could stand and watch the salmon swim around for hours. Last time we were there new salmon had been put into the net on the deck so they couldn't be fed whilst they were adjusting to their new home. However, this mean they were jumping quite a lot and interestingly most were swimming in the opposite direction that they normally would. Polarised sunglasses were useful to help see better below the surface.
S.
If you love to see salmon this is the place to go.feed them see them free. A great selection to buy or catch you own
K.
Cool for the kids. It's certainly a fish farm first and then a cafe! Wouldn't recommend the eggs Benedict, but the bagels are pretty good.
O.
The food is good, and great place to see a salmon farm. Not so much the "catch your own" side of it.
W.
Loved the teriyaki salmon wings (very delicious) and sashimi (very, very fresh). Would be great if the kitchen was closed later (we visited around 6pm and kitchen was closed already). Parking was easy. Didn't get to feed the fish (think they ran out of the feeds).
A.
Salmon is fresh and I would recommend a quick 10-15 minute visit if you are driving in the area. There isn't a whole lot going on and I wouldn't plan an entire day on this farm. The salmon is fresh and the coffee is pretty solid. Check it out if you drive by, but don't go out of your way to go here.
E.
A must place that you need to stop and must try out the salmon
S.
The best place to get fresh cheap salmon. Dont miss to try the fresh raw salmon sushi on the shelf with wasabi. People mostly come here to feed the salmon though and it seems fun to do that. The fish foods provided for free
K.
Lot of Asian tour buses stop here to feed the Salmon, not worth it (in my opinion). They have Salmon prepared in a few different options: Sushi, Sashimi, Smoked. I had the sushi & sashimi, wasn't impressed. I find that the better Salmon is served at Mt Alpine store ~15mins away
H.
The salmon burger was delicious 😋. So was the salmon chowder, chock full with slices of salmon, carrot, potato, cooked in a thick creamy broth, with slices of warmed bread. The meal was washed down with hot capucchino.. very satisfying! Good place to have a meal.
M.
Tasty food, friendly staff. Ask for menu because they have more then on display. Our absolute favorites are sashimi and soup! Would recommend.
P.
They'd run out of food for the fish. A fellow visitor gave us the residual of theirs. Rice in the sushi was a let down, but the salmon itself was good.
n.
very good salmon farm. Nice reception
A.
Cool feeding the salmon and eating sushi
J.
Stopped here so kids could feed the fish. Very exciting to see the big salmon churning about after the food. Great coffee too in a relaxing setting. The fishermen of the family will want to stop off here.
A.
I always stop here to feed the fish and buy some salmon (and so does everyone else if you go by the crowds!) Great stop for the kids to stretch their legs, have a hot chocolate and a nice coffee for mum and dad.
K.
It's a busy place, but the salmon is as fresh as it gets! We came for the salmon chowder, it was beautifully made with big chunks of salmon in it. A generous tasty helping warranted a second visit from us the very next day.
W.
1. Very nice salmon (sashimi), fresh, firm and tender. 2. Wasabi and soy sauce is FREE! 3. Tried cold smoked salmon and salmon curries, both are brilliant. Someone may complain about the price for smoked salmon but hey, the price is better than supermarkets. Highly recommend.
M.
Great place to get up close and personal with what you eat, salmon is available for sale in either smoked-cold or hot or just raw fillets and whole. After you've made your choice you can get a container of salmon food and feed the fish.
J.
If you try the salmon sashimi or cold smoked salmon, you will taste the texture difference btw glacier salmon to the others.
For hot smoked salmon, locals recommend manukau, stronger favour comparing to oak smoked.
h.
Fantastic coffee. My son loved feeding the fish and staff were very friendly. Only issue was tourist bus came through and took over the entire deck and our take by literally crowding right around us on cm away from us. They were using all the free feeding tubs leaving non for the kids and not buying much from what we could see.
IN REPLY TO YOUR RESPONSE : I think it is a wonderful attraction for tourists, part of the issue I saw was also that the people from the bus were throwing entire tubs straight off the side of the deck into the canal rather than into the fish feeding area they are meant to. I saw you had signs up about this but they were small and possibly not able to be read by foreign tourists?? I know it can be difficult when you are flat out with coffees and food etc to monitor everything but possibly an increased staff presence around the fish feeding area during the tourist bus times might help everyone do the right thing and ensure everyone gets a turn??? Part of the issue we also found that made us leave earlier than we wanted is that because the bus load of people were wanting to throw off the deck towards the open canal they crowded us right out of our table, at the edge, we couldn't talk to each other over the noise or enjoy our amazing coffees.
B.
6/04/2019 - Updated review: What can I say, this is one of many attractions in Mckenzie country side. I was here with my brother (who came over from Sydney) and he was impressed with this salmon farm and how fresh the salmon products. We didn't feed the [salmon] fish as they (staff) have cleared the feeding pots even though there's half an hour before closing.
Anyway, they have relocated the salmon products for sale to a small portacom building near the car park area. I think this is to ease the congestion level inside the cafe during the day. What's left is the ready-to-eat meals (prepacked sushi and raw salmon slices) and other hot food and drinks in the cafe.
Another thing that might or might not be an interest to some people is that this place now has a wheelchair ramp with gentle slope for the people who has difficulty with walking or using wheelchairs. This access is now available to cater to the need of others (people with disabilities) and kudos to the owner(s) for making this happen. 🤗
Would I go back 🔙? Yes ☺
Would I recommend this place? Definitely yes 👍👍👍😊😊😊
17/10/2018 - I had a quick lunch (salmon sushi and sashimi) while passing through the area. What can I say, delicious as always. They are now serving hot food (i.e. Bento set) and not just cold food.
The retail area is slightly larger as they now have a sheltered outdoor area (see the photo).
The toilet block is now complete and operational (see the photos). The wash basins are located outside the toilet block.
Would I go back 🔙? Yes ☺
Would I recommend this place? Definitely yes 👍👍👍😊😊😊
Food: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5. It was yummy 😋.
Ambience: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5. Don't expect too much. This is not a restaurant, but a simple cafe that allows free feeding to the salmon fish 😊.
Price: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5. Reasonably priced.
07/02/16 - Gone back here to buy fresh salmon fillet for sashimi but was sold out! 😢. Only had $20 precut salmon sashimi there. By the way, they are now have a hand basin for customers to wash their hands after feeding the salmon fish 🐟. They are planning to build a toilet block too (finally!)
Would I go back? Yes ☺
Dec 2015 - Easily the best salmon farm for their fresh salmon sashimi!
However, there's no public toilet (if you drank too much water) or hand basin to wash your hands after feeding the salmon, so remember to bring wet baby wipes. ☺
E.
You can have fresh brew coffee and simple meal. Not so great view
K.
Lovely spot to break the drive. Kids love the salmon feeding. The sashimi salmon is lovely and very fresh but shame about the highly overcooked rice (its almost like this is the first time they have cooked rice).
S.
Thanks for the staff there we came around 4pm and past have a go time, before 3:30pm, Sam was great for helping my son learn how to cast the line etc, cheers
N.
Fun place to eat. You can feed the fish whilst you wait to be fed the fish! The sashimi was incredible and so fresh.
D.
The only good things about this place are the mountains in front of the shop and feeding the salmon . The receptionist at the salmon store was pretty grim. The salmon price is similar to the supermarkets. The restaurant looks good but a bit expensive given the fact that it's a salmon farm(I expected the salmon dishes to be cheaper). Overall, not as exciting as some reviews make it sound like. If you are on your way to Queenstown from Twizel, just stop for a few minutes to feed the salmon and see for yourself.
J.
Good salmon sashimi and sushi.
l.
They provide food to feed the salmon for free which was very fun to do. Super fresh Salmon was yummy too.
L.
Possibly the freshest salmon I've ever had - my husband and I shared three meals just so we could try as much as possible lol I loved the salmon chowder but he's still raving about the smoked salmon platter!
A.
That's why I loved to drive around new Zealand amazing God creation ☝️
L.
Service a bit slow. Coffee very nice.
E.
We enjoyed our stop great place .we bought some fresh salmon to cook at home .the salmon was the best we have tasted .would buy there . again .helpful staff .
Did not eat at the cafe is was full very busy, seating tables all taken .
J.
fresh salmon, nice service.

Good place to stop but salmon quite a bit more expensive than they used to be which is unfortunate... before it was like visiting a real kiwi salmon farm but now more touristy with the prices to match. However the owners are super friendly - even let me take a salmon and pay them next time I came thru because their EFTPOS was down (which I did). I always do stop by especially when I'm heading to Mt Cook - nothing like a Baked Mackenzie Salmon in the mountain air ;)
C.
Fresh salmon is not good as I thing but Salmon teriyaki is delicious.
M.
We were able to get some very fresh salmon products for lunch and quite enjoyed them. The sushi and salmon burger were both enjoyable. The biggest challenge was that there was about 200 tourists on site and very little space to relax.
R.
Free salmon feeding! Fed the salmon whilst waiting for food. Fresh salmon sashimi was so good. They even gave us ice as we had to travel with it. The take away dishes were good as well! Would recommend!!!
W.
Love the Salmon from here. We go here every time we visit the South Island. Also buy online and get it delivered. The best in the country.
P.
Loved it beautiful people and beautiful salmon

The place is very nice and the food is decent. Only the curry is a bit of hit and miss. I understand there are different type of curry, and this I suppose is the green curry? But unfortunately it was lumpy, I suspect that was too much coconut milk being added and has been cooking for a while, hence the green curry looks creamy colour instead. I cook green curry on a regular basis and I once made the same mistake before too.

Nice floating Cafe to have break in middle of your trip and have lunch
Fresh and cooked Fresh water salmon are available here.
-I tried 3 foods from their menu and all were awesome.
-low and affordable price.
Live Fresh water salmon and trout can be seen here and feed (Do not feed trout and duck as posted on sign :) )
D.
This is a must stop, feed the salmon and buy salmon Had some freshly made sushi and a nice flat white coffee.Rate 10/10
M.
Quick spot to stop and not only be able to feed the fish (free) but also get a free sample of the salmon they farm and harvest there. You'll often see trout hanging around the salmon pens as well and fishermen will fish for them throughout the canal.
D.
Feeding the fish is fun and the fresh salmon products in the cafe are great. The toilets however are not clean and probably not sufficient for the volume of visitors
D.
Just so exciting being able to feed the salmon..love that you have little containers ready for customers...free to feed .
Y.
Salmon farm dusk. Ducks dancing~
H.
My favourite salmon shop! So fresh and reasonably priced. The kids love feeding the fish when they're with us too.
Z.
The salmon didn't exactly taste like some of the freshest I've eaten (especially the stuff I've eaten at the Hermitage Mt Cook), but it's still pretty good food. You can also buy pies or sushi or salmon parts too, if that's your thing -- I've tried the Mornay and tomato salmon pies, and I personally prefer the latter, although it's probably up to you.
If you want, you can feed the salmon for free too!
Overall, it's a nice place to stop over if you're driving past. Oh yeah, there might be something in the air that could irritate your eyes (perhaps smoke?) so you might want to watch out for that too.
F.
Awesome fishing for salmon.
A.
Great for a good time fishing also motorbike trails nearby
W.
My favourite is Salmon Green Curry! Yumm
A.
Not worth the money if you ask me but if you're going to go fishing around that you should come here and fill your pockets with the fish feed cause even the wild fish around there eat that stuff. .. don't get caught though. Use a needle to poke a small hole in some of the fish feed balls and than thread it through your hook. You'll catch a fish every time
R.
Feed the salmon with the free food supplied and watch the waters churn as the fish rise to feed. Purchase fresh salmon to enjoy one of New Zealands best fish for dinner, vacuum packed for freshness. Or take the small packs to taste immediately.
D.
I had my salmon feeding experience here! Here you can feed them for free without any charges at all, besides you can also hv a taste of a fresh and sweet salmon.
T.
Beautiful salmon to purchase. Husband got the platter this was lovely, my daughter and myself got the salmon chowder neither of us enjoyed this, it tasted burnt. Had enjoyed the chowder on previous visits. Exciting to feed the fresh salmon.
S.
Lovely place friendly people and great prices
V.
Had fun feeding the salmon (free). Food was ok. Definitely got a good amount of salmon in each dish. The sashimi was more firm/crunchy than I’m used to. Good place to stop for a snack.
A.
Beautiful place
Mesmerizing scenery and close view of salmon catching and duck diving 👍👍👍
But bit sad how the fishes go to deep sleep by knocking out on the head.
T.
Feeding the frenzied salmon is a cool little 5 mins; didn't try the food but nice enough place to take a quick break from driving
R.
Wow! Wow! Wow! Just when U thought U knew Wat Salmon tasted like.... These terrific team make it better! The teriyaki salmon wings took me 2 a whole new world of InJoyIn salmon, the salmon mornay pie puts a yummy in Ur tummy, the burger did the job 2 (I had a taste of everyone's 😜)... The chowder didn't really wow me... Though those wings R a must 👌
W.
A good selection of salmon related menu. Such as poke bowl, curry salmon rich, and many more. However, nothing mind blowing about this place. Visit only if you’re driving pass it. I drove out from Mount Cook Village, definitely not worth the drive.
J.
Little salmon farm which allows for feeding of ducks and fishes. Delicious and fresh salmon sashimi. Other than that the cafe serves some decent salmon fare but got crowded with tourists pretty quickly
A.
A freshwater salmon farm, interesting feeding salmon.. extraordinary fresh salmon meat..
Y.
This place a must-visit place for Salmon sashimi lover. We dropped by this place on our way from Lake Wanaka to Twizel. I found out about this place from yelp; however, I went there with not very high expectation. It is located just beside state highway and very easy to find. The salmon at the high country is super fresh and yummy. I have tried many Salmon sushi restaurant and this is one of the freshest salmon at a cheap price. The high country offers not only sashimi but also other which are made with salmon such as Salmon burger, Salmon pie, and Salmon curry. Highly recommend dropping by
l.
Nice little pit stop before entering the town. Lots of tourist. Hot food was okay, not fantastic. Limited varieties. The fish farm at the back of the restaurant was quite interesting.
A.
Amazing experience, the food was oke, but the place was beautiful, and you can feed the salom for free, they also have a lot of menu options! Should visit if you have a chance 😁😁
蘇.
I will recommend visitors buy some salmon fillet and cook by yourself.
For me personally, I’m not going to try sashimi again. Because when I eating the sashimi, and I found not only one fish bone in my sashimi and also have some fish scales.
Anyway if you come here you can still feed the salmon and have some fun here.
B.
Agreed with Nuala. It seems to be a small cottage for the dining in, but a really big farm you can feed the fishes in the farm too, not the ducks though. Don't feed the ducks, as instructed. Cheap and fresh salmon really, compared with another bigger salmon restaurant somewhere else in South Island.
S.
Beautiful salmon chowder and love the miso soup also brought a salmon delicious lovely staff
J.
Yummy ! Great sushis, Gravelax and the salmon chowder was delicious.
Really fine taste salmon
K.
Interesting salmon farm next to a lake. Serves good coffee and a selection of salmon products. Nice stop right on the main road to Mount Cook.
S.
The salmon products are absolutely beautiful, I do hope I visit again sometime to be able to purchase more salmon.
A.
The taste of the salmon sashimi is inconsistent. We visited 2 days in a row, but both days salmon sashimi tasted differently. First day it was delicious, fresh & texture is crunchy. The next day we visited, it was very soft. Disappointed :(
g.
Free feeding of the salmon so its good to see them in the farmers they are. Busy cafe best go to the toilet before ya go.
P.
Well positioned cafe and restaurant right on the lake. They also have salmon feeding at the cafe and ponds for the salmon farm right at the side of the cafe. Interesting place to take a rest with great food
D.
Awesome place to see and fish
A.
A fun experience, worth stopping or going as a estimate from Tekapo. It's fun because it all floats on a barge on the canal. Prices aren't bad for the salmon, and feeding the fish is free!!! They get a bit busy and then there is a wait for coffee or food.
B.
Star rating was for my family so shouldn't reflect badly on the place. We stopped for lunch with younger children. All dishes on the menu were salmon based which the kids wouldn't have eaten so had to go to another place. Kids got to feed the salmon which they loved and took some photos with the cut out head signs.
J.
April 2016 was my 2nd visit, love the salmon shasimi sold here. NZD$20 for 250 grams, way cheaper than those sold at Pukaki Visitor Centre. Although the packaging may not be as good or as attractive, you can be assured that the salmon sold here is very fresh and as delicious. As it is close to Lake Pukaki (just about 10 minutes drive), you can takeout and eat there too. The staff will help you wrap it nicely. You get to feed the salmon for free, all visitors love trying it out. Free Wi-Fi connection.
H.
First you feed the salmon, then the salmon feed you! Delicious sashimi, and fresh salmon fillets to go. Seems like the only place you can get fish in the Mackenzie...
Went back for salmon fillets a second time: seems like they don't bother to take the bones out as is customary internationally for salmon filleting.
N.
Awesome quality salmon. Sashimi and burgers were awesome.
