Reviews of Wellington Chocolate Factory
R.
Visited on Saturday around 3pm, the cafe was pretty quiet. We ordered ice chocolate, it was very thick chocolate but It was not sweet. It was tasty but expected more sweetness.
F.
a hot chocolate grab n go wish they were fully open for a full experience nonetheless no faults here quick grab n go and got some chocoy bars too the hot chocolate has the right consistency and good portion a value for money it was a treat
g.
Bought a five pack as a gift, included free postage and was delivered two working days later. I initially gave the wrong address which I contacted the Company directly who promptly fixed the issue straight away by telephone and email response. This type of service is rare these days. The chocolate is high end, it's not your regular chocolate, it holds multiple notes which cheaper more mass produced chocolate loses in production. The Gin one was quite superb.

Cafe: 4 stars (Good)
Tour: 2.5 stars (Neutral)
Overall, the Wellington Chocolate Factory is a cool place to hang out; yummy hot chocolate (if a bit too sweet!), and plenty of games to play, but wouldn't particularly recommend their tour.
I'd also like to mention that their website's reviews are not necessarily an accurate representation of people's experiences, because the reviews must be approved before being submitted.
The Tour:
The tour began with a complimentary cup of hot chocolate while we waited for others to arrive, followed by around 40 minutes of information about History of WCF, and information about the chocolate beans. They passed some beans and other objects around. There was some interesting information, but overall this part of the tour seemed to drag a bit long. It would have been improved by being more interactive, or if we still had our complimentary cup of hot chocolate to enjoy while we were listening.
The tour itself didn't show anything you can't see from the cafe, but we got to try some of the chocolate at different stages of being made which was quite interesting.
A map of where the beans came from would also have been a plus, especially in non-covid times when they would have more varieties.
Our experience would have been improved if they had more varieties of beans to try, as we weren't particularly interested in the flavored chocolate.
Lower-sugar options would be a nice addition, such as 90% or 100% chocolate, which I understand they sometimes do.
In summary, worth a visit to try their hot chocolate and play some games. If you're pretty interested in chocolate but don't know too much then the tour might be worthwhile too!

This is the only place I know that serves hot chocolate with coconut milk as a non-dairy option 🥥 If you like coconutty chocolate then go for it, otherwise go for other milks for a stronger chocolate taste. I liked this a lot 😊 And order a brownie if you’re in the mood for a chocolate overload (give me that anytime!)
Also as a chocolate factory, you can see - and smell - the chocolate production day in and out, even when you’re standing outside before opening the doors. It’s absolutely heavenly😇 You can also buy their own special bars of chocolate made there in a variety of flavours in pretty packaging ideal as gifts for your chocolate-lover friends 😊 it’s probably more ‘boutique’ than the conventional favourite Whittakers .
Unfortunately the tours were closed when I visited on Xmas eve. It would’ve been great to go for that!
G.
Amazing place, a must visit for all. Factory tours are booked on the website- can't wait to go back for one😊
o.
Serving up the best hot chocolate in town. A choice of milk (dairy, soy or coconut) and an option for vegans too. Also sell vegan choc chip cookies and s'mores. All their chocolate bars are made in this factory space.
H.
Certified Organic, award winning and locally produced chocolate factory/bar. You can book for tour of chicolate factory or just visit to experience hot chocolate. Great quality for price. Great place for short break throughout the day. Excellent coffee as well. Highly recommended to anyone visiti g or living in Wellington.
N.
We went on the basic factory tour. It is more of a talk though you do get to see the factory part in use. Was very informative, and the gentleman who gave the talk was friendly, knowledgeable and approachable. If you have a spare hour I definately recommend this for something different. You get a free hot chocolate, cookie, chocolate bar and get to dobsone taste testing too. Probs not for littlies but junior school up absolutely. Certainly changed my views on where I will buy chocolate from in future
A.
I had a private tour at the wellington chocolate factory. It was a great experience. Jessica explained everything about chocolate from bean to bar. They provide high quality chocolate from responsible resources (fair trade) all around the world. I enjoyed Fiji and also salted caramel chocolate bar. If you fancy a proper hot chocolate, this is the place you should go. Also love the brownie, but i think not for kids as they might find it a bit bitter.
Interior is cozy, you can find some works from local Wellington artists displayed there.
A.
Dominican chocolate taste good . Did the tour as well but for the money I paid I would expect more - thought will see the whole process of how they make chocolate rather than someone just talk it through
Staff are friendly
Chocolate is about 10 bucks per block
U.
A must visit if you're a chocolate lover.
The chocolate block is the best gift as it has cute design. Don't forget to try the hot chocolate as well
T.
I have visited many chocolate shops around the world. This is undoubtedly one of the very best. The drink-in hot chocolate is divine.
O.
Great customer service, great variety of Chocolate bars, there cocoa is ethically sourced and fair-trade which is a huge plus.
J.
Delicious assortment of chocolates! One large hot chocolate is rich enough to share between 2 people. You can ask for samples of the chocolates before committing to buying one. The Dominican chocolate was very good.
K.
Went on a factory tour and was able to know the background knowledge about making chocolate and taste the different types of cacao. It was such an amazing experience. And the hot chocolate offered at the end of the tour just nailed it!
G.
I did the "Discover the Art of Chocolate Making" tour today, and it was fabulous! The woman giving the tour was so knowledgeable and passionate. They provided us with delicious hot chocolates, cookies, tons of chocolate samples and a block of chocolate to take home. Really informative and great value for money. Highly recommend!
A.
Kids too young for the tour so just went to cafe, although found out they do junior tours during the school holidays so will go back then.
So for the cafe:
Natural decor and board games, able to see the chocolate being churned in the cafe.
I liked the deep grown up flavours of the hot chocolate. One of my seven year old twins not so keen. Just be aware it's not a sugary kiddy-esque hot chocolate. But I sold it to them that this is what real grown up chocolate tastes like. We slo had cookies and the mini donuts - three mini donuts come with a little pot of melted chocolate. I should have bought more, yummy and went too quickly. There are also duck island ice cream treats in there but the weather was cold wet and windy on the day of our visit so we were seeking warm items. Also be aware that aside from hot chocolate it is just filter coffee available. That was fine with me but I did hear a couple near me discussing that, so just be aware.
M.
Such a great place to enjoy the real cacao expierence! Just ask the friendly staff and enjoy a hot, raw and unique warm chocolate drink❤️
M.
Very tasty indeed 😋🍫 A calm vibe with an open-view factory to watch the making of Wellington's chocolate bars. The hot chocolates offer a rich yet decadent flavour...not for the faint-hearted.
J.
Cute little shop in the heart of town. WCF produces delicious chocolate and occasionally do amazing local collaborations with other people.
p.
Absolutely amazing! The best hot chocolate I’ve had so far and will probably be the best I ever have!
D.
Their single origin Chocolate is really nice. And they have real hot chocolate - the best in town. Freshly made for each customer. Also with nut milk for vegan or lactose free options.
D.
It’s a very unique space. I can watch some of process of chocolate-making, and buy various kind of chocolate!
H.
Wishing the team there great success
I like the products as they unique and Artisan
Visit this place while in Wellington for a hot chocolate or purchasing some chocolate
A.
Informative tour and great tasting products, highly recommend 😊.
S.
Came across this place quite by accident. Chocolate was lovely. With a visit. Situated in Hannah's Laneway
H.
Wonderful friendly service. Needless to say the chocolate is amazing. I came for the hot chocolate and was delighted. Not too sweet, with rich chocolate taste ❤
Y.
I always loved wcf... They make amazing chocolates. The hot chocolate is whisked with a steaming wand with the milk and chocolate both miXed in. Super rich and buttery. Two suggestions though, have proper seats for people to hang more comfy like Butler on Willis. Next, give some Wi-Fi to patrons and u get yourself the best craft chocolate cafe in new zealand.
N.
Easily one of the best hot choccys in town and super close to some other awesome eateries for more savoury stuff!
A.
Chocolate bars are a must and the hot chocolate is must try !
G.
Definitely worth a visit when in the area. The cocoa aromas from the roasting beans make the perfect appetiser upon entry. Great range of chocolate bars and plenty of tasters to help sort out your favourite. On a winter day, the hot chocolate can't be beaten
M.
Absolutely AMAZING customer service and all over incredible experience!!! Would 100% recommend anyone visiting wellington to check this place out. I had the 100% pure cocoa hot chocolate and it is safe to say I will never have anything like it again! Simply incredible and will never forget it. THANK YOU CHOCOLATE FACTORY ❤❤❤🙏
d.
The place smelt so yum oml, the whole place has a really cute aesthetic vibe to it!
H.
We did the tour and learned a lot about chocolate. The smell as you walk in is intoxicating. We had a hot chocolate drink, while we waited for our tour to begin. Great to hear the company ethos. I wish all business operated with such care and consideration. Small operation, but done with excellence. Well done. All the best with establish those chocolate awards .......
S.
Always one of my favorite stops in Wellington, their hot chocolates are incredible! Love looking around the factory/shop, you can see them at work making the chocolate. Friendly service too, and the whole place smells incredible. Well worth a visit!
N.
No parking space. But good place for authentic chocolates
E.
Really enjoy the chocolate, the place and the service. Awesome place. Have had their chocolate, sundae and donuts multiple times.
M.
Great shop!
We went for the Saturday tour. It was so much fun. One hour of informative tasty tour 😁
We got to see how chocolate is made, taste some samples and enjoy hot chocolate at the end.
I love the company, they make one of the best chocolates in New Zealand!
R.
Top products, but insane prices. Be prepared for a shock - take plenty of money!
D.
Amazing! Forget coffee. Come here and have a proper hot chocolate, the way it was served originally in South America. I had a Peruvian chocolate. It wasn't amazing, but it was unlike any hot chocolate I've ever had. They also have chocolate bars and shakes and a few other things worth trying. Great drinks and great atmosphere.
E.
Chocolate snobs unite! I have never been to such a wonderful chocolate/confectionary company that came locked and loaded with smiling, helpful, passionate staff. You can just TELL that the employees love working here. The chocolate and the way it is sourced is ethical, clean, and downright delicious! Absolutely worth a visit if you're in Wellington. The smell of chocolate will make your knees weak! Make sure you grab one of the Peru bars, voted #1 last year in the world!
A.
Delicious chocolate (try the coconut one!) sold by charming and well informed staff. Very impressive and so nice to see people doing chocolate properly. Expensive yes but you get what you pay for. Definitely check out the hot chocolate menu - the seasonal caramel one was divine.
J.
Must visit if you are in Wellington and a Chocolate Lover! Amazing Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate, with Lovely and Friendly Staff!
Z.
The staff are lovely and interesting - they encouraged me to try their cocoa nibs and gave a lot of information about them. It is a wee cafe with a few drink options including milkshakes (which are moderately pricey) and they sell their chocolate bars and some other local products but otherwise there isn't a lot on offer. You get to see the chocolate in the machine working and learn about the chocolate making process which is a fun novelty.
p.
Love love love this place. Especially when there are limited edition small batch flavours! 😍
J.
Absolutely amazing hot chocolate and cookies, great prices and awesome customer service. We felt very welcomed as first time customers and 100% will be back again. Thank you!
M.
Quite costly and not that special. The place is very hard to find and offers a small range of drinks (so heavy you can count them as a meal ;-) ). The drinks are good. You can also watch other people make the chocolate and if I'm not mistaken you can sign up to create you own chocolate in a course or something
D.
I was there to take cover from the infamous Wellington weather. It's a great place to warm yourself up with a nice hot chocolate drink. There's of course the many wonderful chocolate bars to choose from. If you're not sure which to choose just ask the friendly staff and they will be happy to help you.
S.
Amazing chocolate! Love walking in and being hit in the face with delicious chocolate smells! Recommend their single origin chocolate bars, our current favourite is their Dominican Republic bar followed closely by their Raspberry Milk Chocolate bar 🤤
T.
It has a relaxing ans welcoming aroma. Accommodating staff that will cater to your needs.
J.
Was ok, chocolate you would have to acquire a taste for definitely.
H.
While cute, it's a very small little place, so there's not too much to see if you are expecting a grand tour like Wonka's chocolate factory. I think that is where you can buy the cheapest Wellington Chocolate Factory chocolate though, so it's worth it for a peak, and a sample of free chocolate. The cafe also looked good (they had a few different varieties of hot chocolate) but I didn't partake.
M.
Their hot chocolates are best enjoyed in house, on sofas surrounded by sacks of cocao waiting to be transformed into heavenly product. WCF also bake biscuits, or cookies if you wish, made in part with their chocolate(I recommend the Dominican). Sorry I don't have any photos ☕
A.
Very nice chocolate factory.
S.
They have really good chocolate but don't waste your time on the tour ($15). They give you a few very small chocolate samples and a small hot chocolate ($5 if you buy it from the cafe). They do talk about the chocolate making process but you could probably watch a video on that on Youtube, or even just ask whoever's at the counter how the chocolate's made.
J.
Great chocolate selections. Fair trade and organic!
D.
Very nice chocolate here, done a tour with Matt and he was very informative and humorous. Recommend the chocolate from here. Great company vision for the future.
M.
Best new Zealand made chocolate. Great flavours and lots of vegan choices too. Very knowledgeable staff as well as being able to see them making it
W.
I had the 70% cocoa hot chocolate from Peru. Geez, what a treat!
A.
Unexpectedly found this gem during my stroll around Wellington. Exotic Polynesian flavors - in addition to the origins. The flavored 'tea' is an enjoyable no caffiene beverage.
K.
Absolutely delicious individual chocolates, the banana bar and the raspberry and peanut butter ones were definitely top picks. A little sad the shop had run out of peanut butter bars as we would’ve liked to have taken some home with us but we have our fingers crossed for next time 🤞🏻
T.
A really awesome location tucked away in the center of Wellington. Their chocolate is quite expensive but nice. The cafe there is also nice with a water dispenser to help wash down that sweet tooth!
P.
Really good hot chocolate. You can choose between the chocolates of the day. Portion is generous and quality worth the price. Perfect stop for a good quality hot chocolate.
Hoping to come back for a visit of the chocolate factory.
J.
A couple of weeks ago my travel mate and I were on a search for delicious chocolate. We explored Whanganui and continued South to Paraparaumu with no luck at all. At this point we were desperate and decided to make our way to Wellington and to your factory. While New Zealand has continuously offered us spectacular views, hikes, and experiences we hadn't had much opportunity to indulge in flavors. Walking into the store front was exciting and interesting. I had the opportunity to watch cocoa being mixed and was inspired by the alter dedicated to helping other communities. Your staff was helpful, informative, and also super cute. The truffles themselves (peanut butter, banana, and stroopwaffle) were inventive and scrumptious and left me wanting more. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for the obvious time, love, and effort you put into the factory.
M.
Hot chocolate was really really hot but great friendly barista. Free samples of choc & lots of funky art work on their blocks of chocolate. Also sells Fix n Fog peanut butter.
P.
They're a bean to bar chocolate manufacturer and they make delicious chocolate. You can see all the machines that are used for it (they are basically on display if you're interested in that stuff) and they are knowledgeable about the process and very friendly
L.
My favourite chocolate getaway. Their stroople chocolate is my number one choice of chocolate from the cabinet and they do an original style chilli hot chocolate that includes Kaffir lime leaf. Not to mention the whole chocolate making process is on display, from husk removal to wrapping (then eating)
R.
Friendly staff and great chocolate bars.
There are tasters on offer and they do coffee and real hot chocolate.
If you like, you can also take a tour.
R.
Great tasting chocolate and had the best tasting hot chocolate, 100% Peru cacao with coconut milk tastes a little bit like a bitter coffee awesome
J.
We did the factory tour and loved the depth of knowledge being shared. Amazing to learn about their fair trade and sustainable practices and to taste their range of chocolate!
D.
Loved it. Staff smiling and welcoming. Tasted samples and learnt so much about their chocolate process. Will be back for more. PS: Hot Chocolate is amazing.
V.
Visiting WCF always brings a smile to our faces. Love the extra seating they've introduced as well as their constantly evolving offerings.
P.
Go here! Its pretty much Willy Wonka's chocolate factory.
C.
Had a hot chocolate there n brought a couple of blocks. Very nice
S.
Chocolate is delicious.
p.
Their chocolates are delicious and so are the hot chocolates😋❤😍
k.
Great fun making chocolate
R.
The only place I know where breathing deeply can put you into a diabetic coma. Seriously though, awesome chocolate, and the chocolate freak shakes are epic. Tours need to be pre-booked.
J.
Great chocolate! If you get a chance, do the chocolate tour! Definitely worth it. My favourite is the Peru single origin.
A.
Paid for the tour but it was a underwhelming. With the music in the background and operating small factory it's hard to hear the tour guide. Given the lack of information and lack of things to see, this tour should be free or 1/3 the cost. Wouldn't do again or recommend.
R.
Brilliant chocolate tour. Greatly increased my appreciation for Wellington Chocolate Factory chocolate, giving me a much greater appreciation for single origin chocolate with its variety of flavors.
P.
Hot chocolate goodness!! :)
E.
Best hot chocolate I've ever tasted!
I hope they'll return chilli chocolate to the menu.
D.
Without doubt the only place in town to check out if you love chocolate. Amazing products and some incredible tours offered on Saturdays. Irresistible!
A.
Amazing artisan chocolate. Also recommend the hot choc - bitter (nice difference) as no sugar
q.
Well made chocolate, they really care about there product and where they buy there product from. I miss you all the best. We bought alot of bars to take home!
l.
Without a doubt 5 star experience, the sort of place you could invite anyone to knowing they will love it as soon as they try it.

M.

A fascinating place in a popular Wellington laneway - it makes it's own chocolate and shows the process from bean to delicious outcome, with lots of flavour combinations on offer.

(Translated) In addition to the New Zealand Whittaker Chocolates, we also recommend you to try Wellington Chocolates in downtown Wellington. You can also see the chocolate process at first sight, and most of all, you can taste a variety of cocoa. The package design is cute and unique.
