The plants displayed at the nursery were in beautiful condition for this time of year. The displays were beautifully presented and easy to walk around. The online order and communications were clear and helpful. The staff were friendly and helpful on pickup. We will highly recommend Southern Woods Nursery after our first visit here.

Wish we'd found this earlier - gorgeous healthy trees and plants, great prices, and it's a lovely place to wander round - all kinds of interesting things to admire. Service was fantastic, staff brought the plants out to our trailer and loaded them up for us, and everyone was super friendly and helpful both on the phone and in person.

Great nursery. Helpful staff. Good range especially NZ natives. Reasonable prices. Excellent Japanese secateurs should you be sick of cheap ones that blunten quickly or get stuck shut as you use them. Bought one and wife then got her own smaller one. 3 sizes for all hands.

Southern Woods has become my preferred supplier for at least 101 reasons but here are the top few things that put them above other nurseries I have tried throughout NZ: If there's something not in stock or you're after something not usually commercially available, Southern Woods will find it for you and not charge the earth as a special consignment. I found this particularly useful for rare natives and large quantities, which I found not a single nursery in Canterbury as capable of delivering on. It also saves me hours of frustration browsing websites from around the country and paying hundreds of extra dollars in courier fees, when Southern Woods can combine shipping and utilize corporate rates and pass these savings on to me (which they actually do, as I carefully calculated and compared prices before settling on Southern Woods as a preferred supplier). In landscape design and installation, this has given me the ability to design to the client's brief with the confidence that the final installation is faithful to intent and not compromised by species substitution due to unavailability or plant failure due to inferior stock. This has marked a notable turnaround in my professional work and 100% confidence in standing by the Southern Woods product. They are also completely transparent with seed source and biosecurity information and documentation if required. This is particularly useful in demands for verifiable eco-sourced stock when required and documented assurance in a recent public-space installation with a lot of existing Myrtle species. What I really love about Southern Woods though is that I feel like part of the family when dealing with them, despite the large-scale operation they have become. I find the entire staff friendly, engaged and well informed. I think they all should be very proud as an outstanding example of how some of the other operators around the country could pull their socks up (with the exception of Greenmachine.co.nz which has also been of comparable excellence in supplying top-quality native species). I recommend Southern Woods unreservedly for the service, selection and quality -- not only for the home gardener, but from my particular experience, as a valuable partner and asset for landscape design and installation professionals. We popped in for an ANZAC afternoon plant procurement procedure. their great website and staff helped us find exactly what we were looking for. They have a big selection of native shrubs and grasses as well as specimen trees and good advice about soil water and sun requirements for each of the plants

Great selection of trees and plants. Plug plants available at very reasonable prices some of which say they have sold out on the website. If you hunt around you might just be lucky. Take the tray of plug plants to the till and just tell them how many you want. Reductions for 10 plus plug plants/trees.

This nursery is a 'go-to' supplier for professional landscapers and the public in general, they are well stocked with an excellent range and helpful staff. Well worth visiting for plant and landscape ideas. Hard to beat on cost.

We went in panicking about privacy issues and asking for a lot, i.e. large native evergreen trees, available now. Laura did an amazing job, basically teaching us about natives, even helping us create a rough plan on what we could do and how many trees we'd potentially need. She spent ages with us. really appreciated the help.
