Reviews of Mission Estate Winery
S.
We biked to mission estate and it was glorious! Beautiful trees and surroundings with all the vines and the famous mission estate house! We got the platter and it was delicious! Such a variety of food and so well put together! We then did the $15 wine tasting, which was a great experience the host was lovely. We also got a complimentary cup with the tasting. I have also been to Elton John at the winery which was another great experience. Would highly recommend people check it out!
S.
Amazing winery and cellar door with rich history celebrated with beautiful photos throughout. We had a 6 wine tasting experience with sommelier Jenny. She's was entertaining and very knowledgeable. Highly recommended a visit if you are in the region!
A.
A stunning location to relax with a cheeseboard and a glass of wine. New Zealands oldest winery!
J.
It's so lovely place. very kindly and friendly
staff and also very nice taste wine.
If you want to eat, there is a restaurant here. You can eat outside beautifully.
L.
Great wine tasting and platter. Phillip was fantastic at explaining everything. Ask for him if you can. What an asset to his company
J.
We had the most fabulous lunch and spectacular service from Ricky. We did not book, it was busy but he managed to fit us in.
A.
The most iconic and oldest winery in New Zealand. Beautifully maintained seminary used for wine tasting and as a restaurant. Wine tasting is a delight given in a very informative manner by knowledgeable people who provide accurate description of the wine history, making and tasting. This is an absolute treat and highly recommend to anyone who has any interest in wine. Followed by a meal at the restaurant would be a perfect afternoon.
R.
We were really blown away with Philip’s service today. Given the fact our group have frequented vineyards nationally and internationally, Philip’s attentive, informative and frankly hilarious service was complimentary with the reputation NZ’s most historic vineyard holds. Not only did we learn something new about wines, we also enjoyed learning more about Mission’s rich and meaningful history! Definitely ask for Philip to experience a most Kiwiana, professional and enjoyable time.
D.
An absolute treat of a place to dine at! While pricier than our usual choice of places, the quality of good was exceptional, and portions massive to the extent than none of us finished our meals. Everyone was friendly and courteous which was the cherry on top to round the whole experience off.
Definitly one of my top experiences.
V.
Beautiful view and historical building, very busy, make sure you make a reservation before you go.
E.
Loved that place.
Wine tasting was amazing and the staff was so friendly.
Loved the food at the restaurant as well.
J.
We had a meal delivered to us during lockdown. A Father’s Day treat from a daughter. Was fabulous. Beef and that did two meals. The desert was to die for.
E.
Absolutely amazing experience and food! Everyone was very friendly and helpful - we had the chance to walk around the property and read all about the history of the winery. We then tasted a great selection on wines...we also stayed for lunch which was great as well!
B.
A beautiful vineyard in the Napier area. The tree lined entryway is a picture perfect scene. You are welcomed to a beautiful estate house, with wine tasting by pleasant servers. Outside there is a courtyard with a fountain, and a view of the plantation. The restaurant was good, a little pricey but with generous servings.
M.
There isn't any better place to start the Hawk's Bay Wine Experience than to walk into this winery and ask for a wine tasting for $10 p. Person. It's a great estate, you are free to walk around. The wines are delicious, staff is extremely friendly and helpful 👍
B.
The wine tasting was excellent here. Well the wines were very good. The lady doing the tastings is like what was commented on the last post. She was very dry and reminded me of a teacher when they are upset with you. I inquired about lunch but didn't receive any helpful information and it felt clear the tasting lady wanted you to leave.
However aside from the tasting lady, they live up to their reputation. Decided to do lunch on a whim and I am so glad I did. Food is 5 star quality and not as expensive as I expected. Dessert was over the top amazing. Good views as well. A must stop winery and definitely get a bite to eat!
B.
Good and setting absolutely beautiful. Service attentive and friendly and it was nice to wander around the place after the meal. Plenty of rattan furniture to relax on with a drink if you are waiting for a table.
L.
We were so well looked after by Trevor and Hamish and also enjoyed a lovely lunch. Would highly recommend.
M.
Beautiful place! Would highly recommend. Small fee for tasting ($6) but you get a wine glass to take. Great for pictures to be taken or having a lunch. They do serve food as well. Gift shop with lots of gift ideas as well. The dessert wine is our favorite! We buy their wine in the grocery store all the time!
T.
Could not recommend more. Amazing service, including the head chef delivering a dish to our table, great atmosphere dining al fresco and the food and win were beyond. 10/10
D.
A very long overdue review of the restaurant at this Winery. Alfresco lunchtime dining in the grounds of the main building, with amazing views over the vineyards themselves.
The Green-Lipped Muscles starter and NZ Lamb main were both sublime, with perfect wine pairings.
Professional but friendly service added to this lovely experience.
T.
We visited for the wine tasting and it was our favorite. Great value for money and we like the take home wine glass. Wines were affordable too and the grounds were amazing.
m.
Great place for my auntys 89th. We hired the upstairs room. Awesome waitress. Awesome day
N.
Huge estate filled with history and tradition. Large variety of wines for tasting and a restaurant to have food accompaniment. No need for reservations, they entertain walk ins.
L.
Wonderful scenery. Beautiful food and very friendly staff. Great wine too!! Highly recommend
B.
This was one of the first wineries we visited for tastings (no meal). We were there early, with no other visitors to being with. We were very well looked after by the staff there, who were only to happy to provide tastings and education on their wines, and Hawke's Bay in general. There were a few varieties available, and the Fete bubbles is great fun and good value. At least when we went, you also get a branded wine glass to take with you, as part of your tasting.
T.
The oldest Winery in NZ holding the most history, and i highly recommend having the free tasting and asking the kind staff about the stories behind the wines you taste esp their dessert wine Late Harvest....the best sweet wine i have ever tasted!
And youll enjoy the fresh view outside the back porch
D.
We had such a wonderful experience at the Mission Estate Winery! We had the pleasure of Philip, who walked us through the history of the Estate, and was extremely knowledgeable about all the wines and the area. Very well priced tasting, at $10 a person we tasted 6 wines, and ended up purchasing a bottle of their delicious dessert wine! Would highly recommend this lovely winery!
F.
Beautiful location amongst the buzzy Art Deco Capital! Great service, impeccable food and great setting. Definitely a Must Do when in Napier
N.
This the oldest winery in New Zealand, it was founded in 1851. A tasting at the Cellar Door was $6 for 6 wines and a stemless wine glass. It was an absolutely wonderful experience. Our server was friendly and knowledge about the estate and the wines. The grounds we're beautiful- it was the perfect spot to start our self-made mini wine tour of Hawke's Bay.
E.
Had a beautiful tasting here last weekend. We turned up without booking: they had a few tour groups in but Philip (I think this was his name!) worked really hard to fit us in and make sure we were seen to. The wines were delicious, and the tasting was really well explained in terms of the history of the winery and the process behind each wine. Very grateful to both Philip and Viv who were fantastic and made us feel very welcome and well looked after.
M.
We visited the winery on May 15 2021 and had an incredible tasting with Viv. The highlight of our visit - besides the wine - was our server, Viv. She was exceptionally personable, knowledgeable, and made us all feel very welcome when we felt a bit out of place! Viv brings a personal element to her service that is matched by none. We left with a new found love of wine, understanding of the bottling process, and fond memories of our visit (and a few bottles of wine!!)
K.
My partner and I had an absolutely wonderful day at Mission Estate today; we aren't ones to write reviews, but today called for an exception. The whole place was stunning, beautifully kept, and incredibly scenic, the wine was exceptional, great value for money, and we even got a free glass with our tasting! However, by far the best part was the service. Wendy is truly Mission Estate’s best asset, her uplifting, kind, and knowledgeable service made us feel so special, as she truly went above and beyond. We would 100% recommend this experience to all!
J.
Walked in on the Sunday of Art Deco weekend and we were welcomed warmly by Wendy. Really enjoyed the wine tasting and the enthusiasm with which Wendy shared the history of Mission Estate as we had not been before. The wines were delicious and it was a delightful experience in a beautiful setting.... went away happy with a couple of bottles to take home.
S.
Great wine and experience of wine tasting only for $10 highly recommend it and love their wine selection
E.
We had a lovely wine tasting experience with Trevor. What a lovely man, helpful and really knowledgeable about the wine and the Mission. The wine was lovely, the venue beautiful and we really enjoyed it all. Many thanks
A.
Pleasantly surprised by this winery. It is a big name with a long history (the first winery in all of NZ!) and has a large beautiful estate and gorgeous grounds to prove it. Typically we think that large producers sometimes rest on their laurels but this place was wonderful.
Blaire was our really well-informed and friendly server at the casual tasting counter. We liked all of the (very) different styles we tried, which is a testament to the winery. Especially liked their bubbles and their Central Otago Pinot Noir.
6 tastes for $5; you get a free wine glass with your tasting fee or you can leave the glass and they will donate the money to a charity. The cost of buying bottles was surprisingly affordable... Many were between $16-29.
There's plenty of space so even though it's popular and a place where the tour buses stop, it still feels spacious. Highly recommend!
R.
We did the wine tasting which was 5 dollars pp for up to 7 wines. Lovely estate and great service, plus plenty of parking.
C.
Had a wonderful experience here! The staff memeber we had (I believe Jenny was her name), was kind, seemed passionate about the wines she was serving, and it had the perfect balance of explaining the wine, its history, and the flavour profiles. Could not recommend enough, especially for the price and the fact that you get to take home your own mission estate wine glass. We'll definitely be back!
J.
What an absolutely incredible experience! The entire estate is so beautiful, the wines are superb and the service/ information we recieved during our $10/pp tasting at the Cellar Door was outstanding. Connor ran our wine tasting and he was so knowledgeable, personable and fun. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and would highly recommend! For $10/pp you get to taste 6 amazing wines, take home a complimentary wine glass & learn all about the wines/ history of the winery. A must do for any wine lover!
B.
Beautiful place. Amazing wine. Incredible staff.
T.
Omg beautiful place awesome food great wine
J.
Had a beautiful lunch here. The Mission Platter was a stand out! We expected just a few bits and pieces but it was really generous and such yummy goodies. Everything else was perfect too, and such good service. Thank you!
K.
Could have been 5 stars for this iconic winery, but packet oven fries with the fish and chips?
C'mon Chef, homemade fries can't be that hard to make.
The wife's asparagus soup was excellent and the chocolate brulee was to die for.
Just give the fish and chips a miss, and you'll be happy.
As per usual, it's the wait staff that helped make the experience.
C.
A visit for some wine tasting and a fun conversation with the taster is always required.
Great tasting, brilliant views
And I highly recommend ordering a platter from the restaurant while enjoying the garden views
M.
My husband and I went to dinner at The Mission a couple of weeks ago. The food was outstanding. Wine was Devine. The experience was below the expected standard due to the service.
H.
Amazing vistas! Hold amazing concerts every year. Famously known as ‘The Mission Concert’.
H.
Missed the formal service of previous experience e.g. having my napkin laid out. Main cooked to perfection. Dessert I chose lean for the price and I couldn't detect any Baileys which was apparently in it.
L.
Calamari entree overpowered with chilli sauce. Mains and desert excellent. Child's main and desert didn't taste fresh. Beautiful setting. Excellent service, except when our plates were cleared, she asked how was your meal?
E.
The staff in the restaurant were lovely and the service was perfect. The food was nice but expensive. The wine was lovely and we were interested in finishing off our lunch with making a purchase. Unfortunately the 10 or so minutes we were in the cellar we weren't acknowledge and I even stood at the cash register for awhile. There was one small group of 3 experiencing a wine tasting down the far end. Could I recommend if there is only one staff member that they face out into the shop and not with their back to the shop.
We left and experience a fantastic wine tasting at a neighboring winery and made a substantial purchase too. Could of been a 5 star rating.
J.
We liked the friendly tasting session. But, we didn’t like that they wanted to give us a branded glass in exchange for the tasting fee. Better for the environment to lower the fee and ditch the souvenir glass. Good wines and competitively priced (thanks to the religious income tax exemption 😂)
J.
We loved our time at Mission Estate! The wines were delicious, but the whole experience itself set this winery apart from the rest. Thenbi provided a rich history of Mission Estate and even took us for a little tour around the property. We highly recommend a visit here, especially for those who are keen to learn a bit about wine and it's origins in New Zealand.
M.
We didn’t do the wine tasting although $6 is good value.
We did have lunch at the restaurant after a day cycling.
The staff were all excellent, knowledgeable and polite. The food was fantastic and served very quickly.
The gardens and atmosphere are gorgeous.
S.
We had the perfect dinner for my partners birthday.the food is fabulous and as you would expect the wine great too.The surroundings make it a great place to be for a special occasion.thanks to all the staff and chefs that made or night!
M.
An exceptional winery with some outstanding Hawke's Bay wines. Their bubbles are brilliant - try Jewel stone and love them. You cannot go wrong with any of them.
T.
Lovely food and wine with an amazing view on a nice day.
M.
Awesome wine tasting experience, when we arrived it was fully booked but the lady let us sit at a table and have a drink before our tasting started.
A.
Visited during Covid 3 lockdown and enjoyed a seated tasting. $10 fee allow us to sample some of the better Mission wines and included a wine glass to take home. Trevor was our host, he explained the history behind Mission wines and explained the wines well. Historic NZ location and good wines, worth a visit.
B.
Wine was great, highly recommend the tasting. Was intriguing to hear about the history of the place and the wine.
T.
Very informative, great selection of wines to taste
A.
Friendly service and great value platter too!
P.
Highly recommend the experience at Mission Estate! Jacquie was very friendly, funny and patient. 10/10 recommend to a friend. When we arrived at the gate of Mission Estate we immediately recognised the iconic building that’s printed on the labels of wine bottles. This place is famous! The vines were bare because we came on a winter day.
B.
My wife and I came here for the Elton John concert. Amazing setup and management of the event. A beautiful place
A.
Staff were really friendly and helpful. For $6 each you got to try 6 wines, and you got to pick what you try from nearly their whole menu, rather than a set 6 wines. You also get a free glass included in your tasting.
D.
Amazing winery...definitely 5 Stars
.
M.
We love this place and we have been here many times before, but I feel that the new refurbishment isnt fitting in well for the Art Deco capital Napier, it's a grand building and deserves a quality refurbishment not like something out of Mega 10 show room.. Food and staff were the same as always, excellent!
R.
Great night with Michael Buble. The backup act Stretch was also great. Great venue. We took a small cool bag with eats from the supermarket which was perfect and great value. Reasonable priced drinks. Wether you sit on the grass hill or sat on seats anywhere is a great view be of stage. We parked the car on a side street 10 minutes walk from the entrance which was handy to get to and away from the concert easily and with no hold ups.
E.
Wine was reasonably priced and delicious. Restaurant would make a nice fancy meal out. Tasting was $5 but included a souvenir crystal glass. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, finding us a wine we enjoyed at our price point.
M.
Lovely place to have wine and good food.
A.
Simply stunning! The menu is extensive, the food is of the highest quality. This chef definitely knows what they are doing. Highly recommended 👌
L.
One of my all time favorite wineries, in fact this is where I first remember my Dad buying wine & letting us kids have a taste (when we got home). It was a Mission Sauterne and I liked it. The tour of the estate cellar & history is a must do. Great guide with a lot of knowledge & lets not forget the food here. It's fantastic.
L.
Very formal evening dinning and a lovely classic casual lunch vibe.Best Beef in Hawkes Bay! Tiramisu is wonderful sweet treat.I have also attended work mid-winter solstice and it was a wonderful evening. 80th birthday dinner and our daughters high school soiree and a wedding.... the Mission is wonderful for all occasions. Their own wine is awesome and lots of great history to take in while there. Great service everytime and friendly staff. And wonderful views of Napier during the day and evening!
B.
Mission Estate is New Zealand's oldest winery. The cellar door is located within a beautiful historic seminary with incredible views over the Hawke's Bay area.
A cellar door tasting is available for $6 which includes tastings of 6 wines of your choice and a stemless wine glass souvenir. Unlike some wineries, the tasting menu is not a select couple of wines, but is instead the almost complete list of available wines from Mission Estate.
Our tasting guide, Holly, was exceptionally knowledgeable about the Mission Estate varietals and wine in general. She was very friendly and guided us expertly through the tasting based on our preferences.
The wines were all very good value for money, and if you like a sweet dessert wine, the non-fortified Late Harvest Riesling was something spectacular.
g.
I was at the Mission recently with a friend, we went on one of the tours. I found it quite good, lovely setting and some lovely wines. What really annoyed me was my friend bought 2 bottles of their bubbly at $20 a bottle and when we got home we found you can buy it at the supermarket for $13.99. Considering they don't pay taxes, according to our tour guide, you would think they wouldn't rip off the people that go there. I wouldn't bother visiting again, the wine isn't worth $20 a bottle
C.
We had an enjoyable lunch here, seated outdoors in the cool weather, and served by really friendly and attentive staff.
We wanted a light lunch, so we only ordered the sashimi, charred eye fillet, and Mission Tiramisu. Halfway into our appetiser, we saw the next table having a beautiful plate of seared prawns, so we ordered one portion. It was fantastic. The prawns were firm, tasty, and nicely seared, absolutely overshadowing the sashimi.
The charred eye fillet was almost a perfect medium rare, but the accompanying smoked potato cake was a little wet from the condiments and mustard cream placed on top of it.
Mission Tiramisu was delicious, and a perfect finish to a wondeful meal.
After lunch, we did wine tasting where they charge $6 for 6 wines, which was waived when we bought some wines. Good selection of whites and reds, and worth trying to see if any are to your liking.
S.
Beautiful food and wine, the staff were lovely and the atmosphere was just idyllic, we had the Battered Fish and Chips for lunch, the portion size was great too 👍I only have one thing i would change, I'm just not a fan of having my meal served on a wooden chopping board 🥴 I would've much preferred a plate, but I guess that's just personal preference ☺
K.
Beautiful winery! Even in rain was certainly not disappointed! Full of history. Fantastic wine tasting and very reasonable, friendly and good value! Excellent wines!
m.
Second time at the mission and it's the best food I've had anywhere in NZ! Service is outstanding and friendly knowledgeable staff.
N.
I was at The Mission for a dinner with 6 other people including myself. As a starter I ordered bruschetta which was excellent, the bread was not moist thus giving it a distinction of the tastes. We brought a bottle of Veuve Cliquot, and the staff charged a very small bottle fee. As a wine, we ordered one of the Syrah Reserves, it had excellent flavor and a very nice musk to it. The main meal consisting of rib eye fillet was excellent and I would rate it a 9/10 only because the lamb was a 10/10. For dessert, a nice dessert wine was chosen with a "Eton Mess". This place was basically the Church of Food in terms of quality.
O.
Great food and wine in beautiful surroundings. Had a pup with us so got banished to the lawn but still enjoyable
P.

J.
Service was nice food was ok pretty big portions..we wouldn't rush back, so many other places in Napier serving more delicious food.
D.
Wine tasting with Thembi. She knew everything about the history the place and of the grapes and wines. Very interesting and the wines were excellent.
B.
The Mission is always wonderful. The food is delicious and the service is awesome! I always love my Mission experience.
c.
Had to write a review due to above and beyond service. Was a guest at a wedding here last weekend when my zip broke on my dress! I'm talking big time. Gaping hole at bottom. Anyway I was just planning a to leave the wedding an shoot back to hotel to put on another dress when the mission wedding coordinator offered to sew me back into it! She did such a marvellous job that apparently you couldn't even tell. She was funny, efficient and professional - just what you need in that situation!
Not only that, the food and venue in general were spectacular.
Just wanted to say thank you!
4.

(Translated) I want to say that after going to church road winery, it feels very ordinary in comparison. First of all, the service attitude is very general. Secondly, I don't feel very open and there are not many things to see. I heard that the dinner here is very good. I ordered a wine and a duck meat. It can be said that the duck meat is average. The side dishes are ugly and I can bear to finish it because it is expensive and not suitable for my Chinese stomach. After eating it, I am nauseous for a long time. It is not recommended to eat here. There are totally better choices at the beach. The dining environment is very good, but the taste is not flattering
