Reviews of Asia Gallery Kimono Emporium
The antique Japanese store I visited was an absolute treasure trove of beautiful, unique pieces. The selection of kimonos was particularly impressive, featuring a wide variety of vintage and antique styles. Each garment was skillfully crafted with attention to detail, showcasing traditional Japanese techniques and designs. The store owner was passionate about the history and significance of each piece, and was happy to share their knowledge and insights with customers. The prices start from $25 for a kimono and go higher, but the quality and rarity of these items made it a worthwhile investment. Overall, this store is a must-visit for anyone interested in Japanese culture or fashIon.
Amazing shop!!! There are expensive kimonos , but there are also tons of stunning kimonos and haoris (kimono jackets - think short kimono) for only $5 and $10!!! The variety of different kimonos is so diverse, it's almost guaranteed you'll find something up your alley.
There are also a bunch of Japanese accessories. The owner is super chill, and it's just an overall nice vibe. After an hour of trying different clothes out, i finally settled on 2 kimonos, 1 haori and an obi (kimono belt) for only $30 in total!
Absolute amazing experience, would totally recommend coming here for a date, hangout or even just some fun exploring by yourself :3
This is absolutely a hidden treasure for Eastern/Japanese culture lovers. Actually it can be for anyone who needs some of inspiration! A huge collection of Kimono and accessories plus Japanese books, paintings, arts, decor etc. I was amazed by the singing bowl! It’s more than meet the eyes. The staff was friendly and helpful. We bought a set of silver silk kimono at very affordable price. Will visit again for sure!
Just a gorgeous shop full of second-hand and vintage Japanese treasures, mainly kimono and yukata (light kimono). The kimono range from $5 to hundreds of dollars, with also a large $10 selection. They have surgical instruments, old photos, paintings on card, huge hemp mosquito nets, pieces of fabric, jackets, vintage/antique door and furniture hardware. The randomness of it is fabulous.
I got myself a $5 cotton yukata to use as a dressing gown. It's lovely fabric and so cheap.
I also got some copper and gilded copper decorative pieces (see photo) that I'm going to nail onto a boring chest of wooden drawers. I thought they were $5 each but they were only $1-$2. I also got a gorgeous piece of fabric that I'm going to use as a dust cover for my food processor.
There are some wooden boxes (see photo) that are $5 that I'm going to go back for. They're light and might be a bit flimsy, but they're beautifully made. I was also eyeing up their obi, which are wide sashes used to tie a kimono. They are lined, very long panels of fabric so I'm trying to think of what I can use them for.
I highly recommend that you go there and have a good poke around. As others have said, you can also repurpose the clothing for fabric.
Huge variety of goods and prices. Friendly helpful staff. All items clearly labeled and easy to see. This place is a must visit if you love clothes and fabrics.

Superb stock of old Japanese treasures. Certainly the best selection in New Zealand. A remarkable emporium of Asian textiles and ceramics. Brilliant stock chosen by Paul Rivers with his renowned insights. I've been a client for many years and feel very privelaged to be one that returns often.
Can't believe how amazing this place is. Literally thousands of kimonos to choose from, superb quality and totally unbelievable prices. We bought four and will no doubt be back for more.
They were closing down but we bought 2 kimonos, simple patterns, cotton for $5 each. Very old place. The silky kimonos are beautiful but starting price is $80-100.
Great knowledgeable staff and tempting Asian and Japanese vintage textile and artefact displays. Always happy with my purchases, and visits with friends and family.
Just went in today and was just simply gob-smacked with all the choices, however we also found out that they will be closing on March 15th. We spoke with the owner and found it is just not financial viable at this point but is looking for alternative location for relocation. Really a pity because the owner is such a nice chap who took the time to explain the intricacies of kimonos and I can definitely see the passion and there really needs to be more awareness.
Please do visit before March 15th to show your support!
Fabulous place of 700 kimonos, rolls of fabric, curiosities and trinkets.
Really interesting gallery, many vintage furniture and items, not to mention the tremendous volume of kimonos. They're all very beautiful and the price is very low, average about $25?
It'd be a cool idea if the owner could set up a photography studio or event to showcase them more. Very underrated place.
I will never get over this place. Spent $40 buying myself a whole kimono that would cost me ¥50,0000, and a little girl Kimono for $10 that costs about ¥2,5000. UNREAL, UNBELIEVABLE. I’m going back to buy more FOR SURE!!!! Paul there helped me out today and he was such an amazing help! Thank you!!!!!!!
this is a place you could spend at least 2hours or more looking thru all the beautiful items nor just Kimonos. Thread boxes & tea chests were almost leaping in2 my possession. And exquisite aquasitionof products...you have to see to believe...
some bargains all round
I have been buying items from this shop for several years, even when it was located in Kilbirine Wellington, prior to relocating to Auckland.
It's so refreshing to go into a shop that's not a sterile chain store shop selling the same boring mass produced items.
One has to remember this is a antique shop ,selling Japanese antiques, amazing kimonos, fabrics and furniture.
It a pleasure to browse and find that unexpected gift.
Plus a owner who has great knowledge in what he is selling.
Thanks, Kerry.
Large range of silk kimonos and antique furniture.
AmAZing place. Do you love beautiful fabric, are you an outside-the-box thinkerer, do you like to be surprised? This is the place for you. You'll be in fabric heaven. Your mind will be spinning, brimming with ideas. Grab a bargain, or ten, it'll still cost you less than a meter of decent fabric. Plus you can admire the multitudes of Japanese ornaments, pots, knives and so on. It's the best place to be when looking for sewing inspiration or a change of decor.
First time shopping here, if you are looking for authentic kimono at great prices look no further. Picked up a 100% cotton one on the sale rack for $5 as well as other items.
If only I could give more stars to this shop. This was one of my pleasant finds a few years ago (drove past one day, saw the sign and popped in). Great range of Asian antiques (do not be fooled by its name, it has more than just fabric) that are constantly been replaced. So something new each time I have been. Prices start from a few dollars up to some big ticket items. The staff are great and always friendly.
Amazing store with a knowledgeable owner.
I have brought a lot of different things from nicknacks to Kimonos to even furniture.
One of my favourite places to visit, explore and buy Kimonos.
Fantastic. A warehouse full of kimonos is a sight to see and a delight to experience. Great and knowledgeable service, I found it very insightful. Looking forward to rocking my new kimonos at a party or festival. I'll be coming back for more. Thank you.
Very cool collection of Kimonos. Hundreds to choose from and so many beautiful designs, patterns and colours. Pure delight!
All sorts of Japanese Kimono, furniture and decorations. All reasonably priced. You could spend hours in here, enjoying the store. Best costumes if you are doing a Japanese theme. Authentic kimonos.
Most amazing warehouse full of the most beautiful kimono and all things related to. An absolute wealth of knowledge from the seller. Highly recommend. A fascinating place to explore. Thank you for your expertise
Truly beautiful store with rows of kimonos and haori coats to choose from. There are japanese antiques and beautiful fabrics in the back. You won't find any place like this in New Zealand so I highly recommend a visit!
They have beautiful old japanese antiques.
They also sell some hand sewn Kimonos for $25, the cheapest, however most of them do have some old stains.
The guy that's there is very generous.
The only reason why it's missing one star is because sometimes it is a bit dirty there and some of the things they sell are so old and dirty.
The entrance either smells like pigeon poop or cat poop at times 😅
Beautiful stock of vintage kimono and other Japanese items at very affordable prices. I never found anywhere comparable in the United States, so it is very exciting to have this vendor in New Zealand.
A must-visit Auckland gem. Amazing variety of treasures from across Asia, I never manage to leave empty handed!
Amazing selection of beautiful kimonos! A price range from $-$$$
Absolutely amazing stock and the knowledge and help from the owner is fantastic. Go when you can spend some time browsing as there are so many things to look through.
now fully renovated and crammed full of fascinating authentic Japanese memorabilia, not just kimono that's for sure. Watch out for the travelling doctor's chair, medicine boxes and hats for the servants
Wonderful place to gaze, admire at such lavish fabrics and items. We need to be exposed more to other Cultures! Excellent for retail therapy.
Wonderful place with huge amount of kimonos. Extremely nice owner with beautiful stories about kimono history. Highly recommend
I love this place. Silkfabrics, kimonos galore. PAUL is an expert on all things Japanese...I buymydye products from him.. Great indigo and pomegranate dye stuff.
If you're looking for that authentic Japanese kimono you've always wanted! Look no further... it's the real deal! As well was a plethora of Japanese culture items.
What a hidden gem of absolute treasures... indescribable. Such pure beauty and all authentic, direct from vintage and antique Japan, we are in love.
I've been suffering anxiety that this store above all others will suffer under lockdown...t s my birthday, xmas and any time treat-absolutely love it...please tell me you will be back!xxxxx
I'd heard about this place being stuffed full of cool old Japanese stuff including kimonos, guitars, amour and furniture. Turns out it's really stuffed full. It's kind of like the TARDIS
Omg I absolutely love this store. Could live there in fact. Well worth a look
Such an amazing place just to visit, like a museum AND you can get a gorgeous vintage kimono for $25!
Absolutely amazing place. Like stepping into an ancient Asian indoor market full of hidden treasures. Highly recommended.
Discovered it just before they shut down. I hope they find a new place soon.
