Reviews of Auckland War Memorial Museum
M.
Beautiful place to visit located in the heart of Auckland. Its collections concentrate on New Zealand history, natural history, and military history. A great choice for families and friends. Free entry for NZ residents but tourists should pay for entry. Plenty of car parks. Highly recommended.
T.
When our children were small, the Museum was a regular 'go to' for school holidays; that was about 15 years ago.
Loved the new covered car park, ease of access to the main area.
Lots of activities to explore, see & touch; great for kinesthetic/tactile learners.
Now we have another generation & it was Miss 5's 1st official visit. Her Uncle created this as an experience birthday gift 🎁 & it sure was a hit. So much so, she flatly refused to leave, had a couple of tantrums & her Uncle ended up carrying her to the 🚗.
G.
I really enjoyed this museum. It’s huge so plan to be there for at least a couple of hours. Take time to read the history of the Maori, look at all the exhibits and watch all the shows. It’s very educational. I also enjoyed the Maori haka dance. That was a lot of fun to watch!
K.
They have a Lego Millennium Falcon. I have a newer Lego Millennium Falcon so I'm better than the Auckland Museum. The museum is obviously still great though.
V.
It's a very educational and cultural area to visit, with plenty of proud historical sights to see. Every nook and cranny bears witness to Maori culture's rich legacy. There is also a section dedicated to animals. From dinosaurs to small insects, you can see how the animal kingdom has evolved. The butterfly segment is really appealing. When I get to Auckland, I'll be back there ♥️
L.
If you have a toddler or young kid I recommend taking them to the Atrium on the South side of the museum.
They have a circular area that has light projections onto the carpet with a few seats around the edge.
There's often kids running around. It's open and airy, with soft music/lights, and air conditioned/out of the sun.
In the museum itself at the moment is a display on Auckland that has some nice projector displays for kids. There's also a permanent kid section and dinosaur section on one of the floors.
C.
Went recently after not having visited since childhood (think 10-15 years) and while most was as I remember, with a couple of additions and losses (RIP wall bees), it's still a great place to hang out, learn, and grow the imagination. Sadly, during my visit, a lot of things were in the coming soon stage, and so I can't comment on them, but considering we've recently been in lockdown I fully understand it. Looking forward to returning to see it in it's full glory when those displays are finished.
J.
Nice to spend an hour or two looking at specific areas. Lovely friendly staff. Good cafe, even at 4 o'clock on the afternoon.
C.
This is a "must do" in Auckland, especially if you enjoy museums.
E.
Always worth a visit to this museum, and if you come at night you can enjoy the stunning backdrop for some epic photos. Parking is limited during the day, so use public transport or get in early...
J.
Enjoyed the visit with my kids today. Sea Monster exhibition was very expensive and average. I can not justify family pass $48 spent on the skeleton displays and stuff.
Y.
Haven't been there for a while, loads of changes. The curators and all the professionals did a good job to refresh the old tired display into a more entertaining and modernized environment. Will go back to have a detailed look next time as I ran out of time of to explore all the effort you guys have put into it.
M.
It has it all, art galleries, past and present native people displays, plenty of things for the kids to do hands on. Great domain outside.
Make sure you have half day spared atleast to enjoy as much as possible
A.
Please do not expect cannons, planes hanging from ceiling or tanks like in Imperial war museum in London but I like more story telling features and effort of Kiwis who fought in wars. You can feel the real story of soldiers through their letters, personal belongings and photos. I like the way they honoured each fallen soldier on memorial wall in a big room with flags.
C.
The Museum never fails please.
After talking about Rangitoto to little Mr and Miss we zipped in to see the display on the first floor...
It was totally amazing, children got a clear appreciation of the concept.... although a little startled when the building shook and the explosions ...
Education delivered as fun
J.
Thoroughly enjoy the Auckland Museum. It is a perfect place to venture around and I have no issue spending a good couple of hours there. The domain and winter gardens prove to be a pleasant add on experience as you can have a short walk around following a museum visit.
P.
Even though we started the day off by locking keys in car .. I worried about it after the fact.. TBH no stress plentiful options 🤭.. Anyhoo kids loved the Matariki experience great place to fill the basket 💕
D.
Still an amazing place to take the kids, just get away from the hustle of the world. The upgrade is great, loved it
C.
A lovely place to visit. You can donate via your card for $4 if you wish. Really nice range of exhibitions on offer. The wildlife photography was really good and I'm glad the main photos sent an important message. Large bathroom facilities available and they were very clean. Lots of areas to sit down and just relax which was really helpful. The museum shop was really nice too, a great selection of items to purchase.
m.
This war museum is my son's favourite place. Can see and learn about Maori & Pacific cultures, Insects, Dinosaurs, Marine Animals, Volcanoes to New Zealand and World War histories. Brilliant highly world ranking museum.
L.
First visit in many years. Spectacular! Makes me proud to be a NZ’er!
M.
An absolutely amazing museum which not only has war artifacts and historical items, but includes local history, Maori history, geology, a wildlife display, and interesting fossils.
I especially enjoyed the WW1 and WW2 history of the Kiwis involvement in both wars, and their significant sacrifice. The two WW2 airplanes (a Supermarine Spitfire and a Japanese Zero) were welcome additions. Also, they have one of the few remaining and intact German V1 flying bombs that I have seen in the world, and I have visited a lot of Air and Space museums!
We spent about 3 hours in the museum, so plan on a morning or afternoon to take it all in.
It’s free if you are a resident of the Auckland area, but there is a small fee for visitors from elsewhere.
There is a parking garage on-site, but you have to pay to park in the garage.
There is plenty of outdoor parking lot spaces and street parking around the museum that is free.
F.
Love the museum plenty of stuff to see with free entry as a new zealand resident. Been here a few times but this time had the honour of building scaffold there. Good views from the top floor room you can hire out with plenty available parking so you can't go wrong. Fun fact did you know the museum storage is bigger then the museum people actually visit which is where they store the artifacts.
S.
This has to be a pinnacle venue to attend an anzac dawn service in New Zealand.
Get here early to avoid stress over parking, and to get a vantage point to maximise your experience.
The building itself is grande on a New Zealand scale.
The dawn service is a polished significant well organised event.
So glad we made it. Experienced it.
S.
Really good place. When I went there, there was a LEGO event going on. I took pics of models made out of Legos. I even tried to build a tall tower, but it was risky. I wish there was a Minecraft event as well!
s.
You can't put a price on History although the museum is free for Auckland residents thank you. Haven't been here for a few years, love how it looks and feels.
G.
I’m not here as often as I’d like, but i always enjoy it when I am. Yes, this museum is not as impressive to some but, anyone interested in NZ and Pacific history... their ways of life are on display here in the museum. Take your time and if you can, come alone or with people whom won’t rush you. Only then can you appreciate what this building can give.
The Wildlife gallery was very interesting. The Halls dedicated to both World Wars are awe inspiring. I hope we all come to understand why this is the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
There’s no doubt I will continue to visit, and will be looking forward to any new exhibits.
O.
Wonderful museum, lot of things to see not only the war historical items. Highly recommended
C.
The highlight of the visit will be the kids interaction space which the children can color the sea monster and projected the picture on projector
M.
Very informative museum. First, thank you to the staff at the museum. They were friendly and helpful. Second, parents bring your kids. It is very informative and is growing, with more exhibits planned for the near future.
Easy to navigate with occasional benches and chairs for you to take a break. It is a large museum with multiple levels. You may not need the break but it is a nice option for those of us who do.
At the time I was there, a special butterfly exhibit had recently opened. Another Great exhibit to bring the kids.
The museum also includes a library, a cafe, and a coffee bar. All great assets to the building.
A.
All nice and new and revamped. Very helpful staff and so much to see. We only looked around the ground floor, but wheelchair access excellent, and tales of Auckland had lots to look at and see. Will be going back to check out the other floors, also café staff made things easy for us as well
R.
This place was absolutely amazing! We've been there for at least 4 hours and didn't get to experience it fully.. we had a lovely time seeing and learning about the New Zealand heritage and culture! There is free entry for Auckland residents but you need to bring some sort of proof that you actually live in the city.
N.
A very educational place for anyone who is interested learning more about New Zealand history. A suitable place for school trips as well as family trips.
P.
Its always a great place to visit. Didn't go indoors but there's heaps to see outside museum. Great views, walks, different activities, people picnicking and just enjoying the day.
Q.
Has something for all ages. Grab the brochure to know what events and attractions are taking place. Always busy with groups of people roaming about, yet clean and tranquil. Must visit!
Has activities for kids and attractions for grown ups. Plenty of parking, toilets, cafe, etc.
L.
Awesome way to pass a few hours. Membership gets you free access to amazingvexhibitions. Great value if you are a history lover
R.
Great show the prehistoric aquarium! Wholeuse was great as always
R.
They have changed the museum heaps since the last time we visited.. the staff were very pleasant and helpful :) loved the Tupaea exhibit they had, got a good education on history in there. Really loved how the kids were able to interact with the exhibit, sailing game, putting on costumes etc
P.
A Great place both inside and out! Also Gorgeous views from the city! Enjoy it to the MAX!
G.
We went to the museum to see the Brickman Lego exhibition which was amazing. A fun time spent for adults and kids...a must see if you live in Auckland or visiting 😉 👀
A.
Location: very convenient within the city limits
Parking: paid basement parking and off street parking available
Staff: very friendly and considerate to customers needs. Quick on their toes
Value for money: yes and free for Aucklanders.
Activities: Informative and educational for kids and elders alike
Overall experience: Good
n.
We loved this museum!! The ticket is not cheap but it didn’t bother me after I realize that they don’t charge to NZ people, which I think is really good.
It was our last day on Auckland and to be honest we have our suit cases with us, they gave us a box to put the suit cases while we visit the museum and it was free of charge.
The museum is really big, have some temporal expositions as well so if you want you could spend 5-6 hours there and wouldn’t even notice when the time pass
k.
Beautiful gardens.
Kids can play infront of open yard of Museum.
Nice picnic spot but bring your own food is a must
Football grounds and tennis courts are also available near by
M.
Well curated and very clean. Toilets clean and a super bistro inside. The sheer detail and quality of the exhibits is very good. Contemporary exhibition style.
B.
Quite nice musium! We can see wide variety of the display from Maori culture to natural history. Dispaly about volcano impress my kids a lot.I wish international tourist could enjoy less entrance fee.
G.
Amazing experience I had there... I stayed there for 5 or 6 hours and i totally enjoyed my time... huge section with nature life, war history and everything you want to know about the old times of New Zealand and the modern history as well... I love history so this place was heaven for me... also they have the haka in live events with local natives performing and it was amazing... suck a nice atmosphere there everything inside is wonderful with a good store inside to buy everything you want from souvenirs and books... also the staff is very helpful and they providing anything you need to know about their facilities... you can spend the day there and enjoy the surrounded area outside the park as well... such I nice park there is there... absolutely amazing...
P.S. I was amazed with the section they have about Greek history... so many things from my mother country and it was something that made me proud and sad at the same time...
C.
just like i said about the Auckland domain it was a privilege to visit this historic place today and share it with my family but most of all my children. it was very busy considering it was Boxing Day 2019 and if you live in Auckland and have proof of address on you it is free otherwise you have to pay. so that was good to know before we went. overall great experience i loved all the exhibitions especially our Remembrance wall for all our fallen soliders it was very moving and humbling to see.
D.
Kids always love coming here, the Kai Room is particularly appreciated, so you can bring packed lunches.
S.
Very awesome 👌trip to the museum New stuff has come to the museum, and big Lego display too 😀😄😊👍😁
A.
Many events every year, and you will learn more the history of New Zealand, Maori culture, interest.
F.
we came during the Night Museum and we totally enjoyed it. My son learned so much from ancient worlds, Japanese ceramics, different kinds of butterflies, spiders, bugs, etc. It also has a short dinosaur show and the kids loved it. My son also enjoyed the 3D drawing and the wall of many notes.
The downside is the toilet, so nasty, smelly and dirty. Someone must clean it every hour, especially when its a peak hour and many families and kids are visiting..
R.
We took our visitors who came from the US to this place. A beautiful day was spent at the park with a visit to the museum that made it extra special
S.
Awesome place to spend the day, had the lego exhibition happening while me and my son were visiting auckland over the easter period.
K.
Wonderful place for amazing information. Must visit place with kids, lovely gardens around with fabulous view of the city
R.
Its a beautiful museum with a particularly well appointed section on Maori culture and history. It was a nice introduction to this rich and ancient culture. Plus the architecture of this building is quite breath taking as it sits atop a hill overlooking the gardens....
W.
I love museums, more so when visiting another country to learn about its history, culture,, geography and natural habitat. The museum didn't disappoint. The Maori Cultural performance was as entertaining as it was captivating. The children's section was fantastic, probably one of the best I've seen anywhere. If I could make one suggestion it would be to maybe add a microphone during the cultural performance as I sometimes found it difficult to hear what was being said. I highly recommend the museum to anyone wanting to learn more about New Zealand
w.
This place is amazing, definitely one of the places to visit in Auckland city, the set up and artifacts are top notch and the building is classic building architecture.
R.
Amazing place, highly recommended
A.
Decades since I've been to Auckland Museum. Grand museum that focuses on Māori and Polynesian cultures, and New Zealand's war history. Since I was last there, the museum has done a turnaround; moving from viewing Māori and Polynesian cultures as 'quaint' to respectful and valued. Well done. While many of the displays are the same, the language on the descriptive labels invoke the real contribution of traditional culture.
Also showing was an excellent exhibition celebrating Women's vote in New Zealand (1893), which was a world first.
A really enjoyable museum, great for kids, in a grand building.
H.
Absolute icon of New Zealand - a must stop for any visitor to Aotearoa. Priceless artifacts, a War Memorial to the fallen, Lest We Forget. Currently face masks and Covid passport required. Upcoming Stonehenge exhibition, not to be missed. Surrounded by superb views, parks and trees.
B.
Incredible, you need to prepare the whole day to see everything and look around thoroughly. Very nice place to visit, a must see place when visiting Auckland. My favorite was Edmund Hillary photo and axe he actually used to the 1953 Mount Everest expedition.
M.
We (my wife and me) enjoyed a long summer vacation at New Zealand. And here you may see everything about NZ history and nature - first time visitors of NZ, exhibition about Maori culture and the other related Polynesian cultures and their histories. As great bonus was the Maori Cultural Experience (for extra fee), which included native performers singing traditional songs, chants and dances. Huge war memorial galleries involving the experience of New Zealand in the First and Second World Wars. This is MUST SEE in Auckland!
S.
The Auckland War Memorial Museum thankfully has little to do with war. We saw a Maori exhibition and the natural history exhibition and a volcano exhibition. They were all very good but it was a little expensive to get in, particularly as you then have to pay a heafty price for parking.
D.
The Museum and its surrounding is absolutely amazing! It is considered an enchanted area for tourist visitation purposes. I love the sense of the flowers’ passion thinking about the memory of the history. The area construct is meant to create a lovely stroll for visitors. Greeneries are very vital to our human’s health. Therefore, this place well recommended to any visitors whom would like to enjoy this memorable hotspot to another level.
O.
The Auckland War Memorial Museum covers almost all Polynesian civilization's whereabouts such as - Pacifica, Maori, Fiji, Samoan, Tonga etc.
Also, it encompasses ancient civilizations (Europe, Indian, Chinese,l etc.) sculpture, monuments, manuscripts.
A great place to experience the wars, deals, Treaties between Maori And European Invaders (British). Along with, you also can roam around places like winter garden, park to rejuvenate your senses.
F.
One of the important sightseeing place in Auckland
You can see part of harbour from front of this museum
Also see a huge green field of Auckland Domain in another side
You will enjoy a relax walk when weather is good.
If you like history. Especially the NZ Maori cultural and history. Spend some time (with donation preferred to NZ citizens or cost $25 per person for foreign visitors)
T.
A very good museum located in Auckland Domain. Its free to local but fee apply to visitors.
A three levels building with lots to explore.
Cafe and shop on the ground level.
M.
Awesome museum, always able to spend hours here. Interesting and fun for all ages.
N.
This was a very informative visit. The Maori Cultural performance was good and they also perform the Haka. They give you an insight into the Maori culture which was very interesting. A must do when visiting the museum, is to go into the earthquake simulation room where you will experience a real earthquake.
B.
Amazing place for adults and kids. You can easily spend a whole day. The kids section is really good. The staff at the reception were very helpful. Only downside is you can’t take food and drinks inside which is understandable, but would prefer some allowance for parents with younger kids.
O.
Great museum with a cultural and historic components. You start you tour at the first floor that includes Maori historic houses, clans, weaponry, baskets, tools...etc. Make sure you open their website for a free audio guide. On the same floor you will find the Pacific section with representatives of many other polynesian islands with similarites and differences in languages, habits,food...the second floor is a natural history section about volcanic nature of New zealand with a living experience in a demo house where you live through a volcano erupting in Auckland. This floor also contains animals, dinosaurs and weird wonders. 3rd floor is about war history of New Zealand where you learn about their contribution in WW1 and II also the settlers wars with the Maoris.
When visiting the museum you can enjoy the beautiful park, the duck pond and the winter garden.
L.
25 NZD entry fee, quite reasonable for the size of the museum! There's of course the war memorials and information about New Zealands involment in the world wars, but also exhibitions about Maori culture and history! Highly enjoyable during the two hours we stayed there, though I could easily have spent three.
C.
We attended the 11am ANZAC Day service here. It was so wonderful and poignant. A little bit different to the Australian ceremonies we've attended. The conch shell was blown and the women sang a song (I think to welcome home the warriors?). The service was in Maori and English. We would recommend you attend a service here if you get a chance.
A.
An amazing place to see the history of New Zealand and some advance features that will amuse kids and adults equally. They have Maori culture section, Pacific islander section, dinosaur fossils, they have Earthquake, volcano stimulation room and artifacts from world war 2. You can easily spend 3 to 5 hours to see the entire museum.
T.
This is a great place to enjoy a few hours to learn about New Zealand. The building here is amazing, a great view, because of the order. It is located on a volcano. The exhibits here are very interesting and informative.
A.
Very magestic museum with neo classical architecture. Lovely mix of modern and old style displays. Large collect of Maori and Pacific displays, natural history and culture. I was happy to see the dinosaur skeletons and the aeroplane. Also loved the display of the bag with a moving image behind it. Top museum from my point of view.
C.
I got in there for free with Auckland library card. All the staffs are really friendly and helpful! Good to learn about NZ and Pacific.
M.
An iconic part of Auckland City! It is a very well designed architecture master piece.
You probably need a whole to explore each section of Aucklabd War Memorial Museum.
The Aucklabd War Memorial Museum is surrounded by well-maintain patklabd.
You can walk to the cricket ground after passing through the nostalgic Winter Garden.
There is a cafe located not far away from the main structure of Aucklabd War Memorial Museum.
Tons of people come here for picnic or simple spend leisure time with their family members.
Hard to get car park during holiday season or sunny day; so you need to plan your visit well (i.e. leave home earlier and get here!).
One will never get tired of Aucklabd War Memorial Museum as there are also new exhibitions and cultural shows—great for the young kids.
Aucklabd War Memorial Museum is the tight place for young Kiwi to learn about our culture and history.
Greatly recommend to parents, tourists or over visitors to check out Aucklabd War Memorial Museum! You will not waste your time!!
R.
Haven't been here since school days but its always a pleasure to go to the Auckland museum i don't think they have as much as they use to but its all goods another must see great day out.
M.
A fantastic cultural experience
I went with a group of international students to the Auckland Museum and it certainly delivered! I can not recommend enough the Maori Cultural Performance - the story telling was wonderful and the dances and songs performed took you on a real journey. The meet and greet afterwards was a lovely thing to do as well.
The exhibitions are excellent - including some of the temporary displays they curate.
If you’re in Auckland this is must!
C.
The kids really loved it!!! 😁 running around and discovering interesting things...it was a great day out, finished up with fish n chips at mission bay...only downfall was a woman at the customer service working for the museum had a bad attitude toward me and my mum(bad day maybe?) And a woman working in the cafe at the back end of the museum with the same...other than that, it was awesome...
S.
The Auckland War Memorial Museum is an absolute must see if your in the City. Situated on top the prestigious maunga (mountain) Pukekawa and at one time the residence of the Rangatira (Cheif)Te Kawau. Within the Museum you will find the treasures and discovery the rich history of Aotearoa - New Zealand. To enjoy this maganificent Taonga (treasure) take your time. It will take you more than one visit to explore, you will not be disappointed.
M.
This amazing museum covers three floors of a vast building, the ground floor houses exhibits relating to Māori culture and New Zealand history, the second floor features the natural history of New Zealand,
and the third floor looks at the brave contribution of Kiwis during WWI, WWII and in peace keeping roles around the world. You need at least five hours to make the most of this amazing museum.
J.
Took the kids to see the lego display, great enjoyment for everyone including the adults! There's an instant connection that crosses generations.
J.
The Auckland War Memorial Museum gives you an idea of how the natives of New Zealand came to be. In addition, there are various exhibition like Volcanoes, Animal life, World War II. There are a lot of information and exhibits so please give at least half a day when you visit. I
L.
A must see for anyone who has never been to NZ before. Coming from the US I did not know my NZ history and this was a wonderful introduction into an amazing country. It gives you a well rounded view into how the islands came to be, its native species, it’s indigenous culture, and much more. Only a 30ish minute walk from downtown. Highly recommend!
C.
I learned a lot about NZ at this 3 story museum. I stayed longer than I planned and still saw only a portion. Loved the first floor with the history and artifacts of the Maori and Pacific Islands. Lots of wonderful pieces with good signage. Great Natural History display on 2nd floor with info on Volcanoes that the kids should love. Didn't have a chance to check out the 3rd floor with WWI & WWII and special Butterfly exhibit. A must see to understand the area!
D.
A really first-rate museum, worth a trip if you are visiting and yould like to learn something about Auckland, the Australians, the land, and the history. Its also great for kids.
J.
Impressive lego models in the current exhibition. The rest of the museum is worth a visit too
F.
An awesome place to learn about our history as well as other important information from around the world. The only downfall to it is the upgrade. The old museum had such a great walk through, we would go many times a year. However it's not as interesting as before.
J.
Amazing informative place. Got to learn a lot of new things.
Only drawback is some places are closed due to maintanence.
A.
A nice museum. A must see if you want to learn more about Maori culture and history. The collection of Maori artefacts is impressive and you will easily spend a couple of hours on the first floor.
The museum also has a decent collection of traditional art, mainly british painters.
The park around the museum is great. We visited the museum pretty late and were fortunate enough to stumble upon a huge celebration of chinese new year in the evening.
Plan 2 hours or more for the museum and at least an hour walking, exploring the park.
c.
So much history and knowledge in one place. Best to visit for at least 3 hours to take everything in.
C.
Great place to go. Especially if you live in Auckland, ITS FREE. Spent a good 4hours there. Great displays around the while place and they are always changing. Loved the volcano area, very good information. Especially with the risk in Auckland. Building is beautiful with great views over Auckland. Will return.
D.
Cool recent visit. Exploring - still easy to get lost and stumble upon places untended but much enjoyed. Events in the foyer and a really yummy lunch at the bistro like restaurant at the entrance.
B.
Incredibly moving and respectful tribute to NZ's involvement in war, an excellent volcano exhibit and simulation, and comprehensive exhibits relating to Maori and Islander culture. Also, the staff were very friendly and helpful. We spent a couple of fascinated hours there but time permitting, could have stayed much longer.
g.
If a guest to New Zealand is to attempt a meaningful visit, this a must visit for a micro education into the culture and history of the indigenous Maori as well as the New Zealand's other peoples. One can spend easily a day here.
D.
They gave me the MyMuseum card with minimal fuss - just showed an ID and my Auckland library card. So much to see and do. I truly enjoyed my visit and planning on doing more visits. Food is pricey but you can bring your own.
w.
Awesome family day out you need 2 days to search the whole museum best part for my family was kapa Haka as it was my daughter's first visit to the museum she loved it
T.
Its a great museum, I went there in my exchange course in 2018, and it definitely added to my trip. It is a must go, if you are going to new zealand
M.
Amazing experience both for locals and visiting guests. Definitely worth getting a ticket with the maori cultural performance! We enjoyed it a lot! My 4 month old was excited as well and not a bit scared. The ground floor is my favourite part with maori art and huge boat and wood carvings. Will be coming again for sure!
V.
An amazing place to experience the rich Maori culture of Aotearoa. I took some school students here, there was plenty to see and do, and the aircon was very nice on such a hot day.
S.
I have visited this place 4 times..this time was with my daughter turning 2 almost. She loved the 2nd floor esp the land and origin section. We couldnt complete the whole of it as we went late but next time.lovely place. Easy access. I loved the section whr you can read the letters soldiers had written to their families. They were so moving and we were so touched.
T.
Wonderful architecture. One of many museum I enjoyed, specialy the volcano part.
N.
We went here for 3 hours and still didn't get through everything. They have some great exhibits ranging from early Maori history to natural history, to the world wars.
R.
An incredible experience! Feels very luxurious and a great historical experience. My dad and I visited here and we are huge nerds so we could have spent days here- it is HUGE.
The exhibits are fascinating with great interactive parts. I'd highly recommend visiting the volcano exhibit- very impressive and even has a house where you can experience what it would be like to be in an eruption.
I also hear they frequently update and switch exhibits, so new content each time you go.
There's something for everyone- a great family activity.
M.
Simply spectacular!
Allow yourself plenty of time to visit it all.
The name of the place is not telling the whole story.
3 floors building, on the Ground floor Maori, on the 1st floor Volcanoes and nature in and around NZ. Only the third floor is the actual war museum.
S.
Amazing place. Mush visit once if you ever been to Auckland.
M.
An amazing museum, the exhibits were extremely informative and interactive. A place I'd recommend to take kids as well.

The Auckland Museum is an amazing building, placed right in the middle of one of Auckland's biggest and most easily accessible parks - the Auckland Domain.
Whether you're a local, or from out of town, there's loads to see and learn inside, or wander through the beautiful grounds outside (see also Domain and Wintergarden). The grounds are also a popular spot for concerts or other public events.
K.
I didn't have particularly high expectations for this museum, but was pleasantly surprised. Don't be fooled by New Zealand's short history; there's still plenty of fascinating things to learn about Maori culture.
We did the museum tour, which I recommend and then thought we'd be good to leave it at that. Instead we found ourselves wondering around the museum for another hour or two.
L.
Superb location, to start with, well maintained and presented, huge amount of information, well administrated and showcased.
Can not wait to come back and spend days and days inside.
Respect and congratulations to everyone involved, well-done!
S.
We went for the Maori show and it was amazing. Toured the war memorial on the top floor and the aboriginal exhibit on the main floor. Strongly recommend!
A.
One of my favorite if not favorite place in Auckland. The South Pacific and Maori collections are absolutely incredible, as well as the Volcano, marine life, and World War exhibits. I love this place!!! Heck, I'm going again tomorrow :D
A.
The dawn parade was a new experience at the Auckland Domain. Recommend to go early as 3:30am to be able to watch the parade otherwise you need to enjoy watching it on the big screens. A very well organised event by Auckland Council. Kudos to them.
J.
One of the most beautiful buildings in Auckland. So much to see and staff are so friendly!
V.
Free entry for Aucklanders, including international students who live in Auckland. Superb collection and great story telling. The museum also located near the winter garden, so the trip will be around 1:30 to 2 hours if you really want to have a walk. One of the best park in the city.
N.
A great museum with lots of different exhibits to suit different interests. Make sure you stay and watch the Maori performances which are breathtaking.
Lovely cafe and souvenir shop.
Situated amongst beautiful surroundings with great views of the city and harbour and the Wintergardens nearby.
J.
This extraordinary museum has something for everyone to enjoy. Right now the wildlife photography exhibit is happening, and soon there will be an extension open for the World War I exhibit. The staff here are mostly friendly if keen on maintaining the rules (don't make my mistake and drink from your water bottle in the stairwell. Food and drinks are pretty much limited to the cafe area). There is a short (30 minute) but highly entertaining and informative Moari cultural performance narrated and performed by 2 Moari wahine and 4 more Maori warrior men. Please also note that during the performance there are no video or other photography permitted. Afterwards, though, the performers are happy to take photos with you and answer questions. The Heart's Scar, Hall of Rememberance and and war plane exhibits are amazing and sombre. I was thrilled by the ever expanding Moari history exhibit as well (finally! I can see the inside of a marae!). This museum will be the one place I will continue to visit again and again. Seriously considering getting the membership pass. And we haven't even touched on the Winter Garden...
L.
Fantastic day out. Our personal highlight was the volcano room- very scary! Love a moving room. Thanks Auckland museum!
V.
Huge so much to explore.
Beautiful building.
Great displays and I'd spend 2hrs just on 1 level
Great family place and everyone else.
A.
Lovely place to visit! Lots of great information and wonderful exhibits from cultural artifacts to war planes to a cool volcano exhibit. The building is lovely, the staff are helpful and friendly, and it's overall a very nice place to visit.
A.
Interesting place to learn about Maori and NZ expansion. I understand NZ is part of the commonwealth and the British crown, but there are too many products from England that are in the museum, and to be honest... Who cares?
M.
I love this museum , I could get inside with a membership card and I was able to see lot of Maori culture and their buildings style (houses, battle ships, weapons, etc) . Also, has a volcano eruption simulation in the museum that is a must see. Love it, keep it like this
P.
I love museums. Auckland War Memorial Museum is one of the best out there. Definitely worth the visit. It is free for residents. So better bring your proof of address if you have a strong feeling that you will get asked for it.
Plenty of history stored in this museum. Even the hill where it is constructed has meaning. So it is pretty awesome. Been there a couple of times. If I am not mistaken, they have events too every week or every month. That is another to look out for. Awesome awesome awesome.
A.
Always a treat and it's free for us that's a bonus always been a family favorite for many years
G.
The museum is always kept tidy and clean, lovely food and coffees from the cafes. They recently opened up some of the previously locked up spaces at level 1, intriguing things to see! The constant changing paid exhibitions are also keeping us back! Highly recommend signing up their membership, it's great value to see all the paid exhibitions for free and get all sorts of discounts! Great place for a family day out during any weather!
S.
Dont like to go to museum? No worries. The view around the museum will make you smile..
Museum entrance is 15 NZD, unless you are a citizen (free).
J.
Informative and useful insights on New Zealand and the natives Maori. Worth the money if you're into historical and geographical studies.
K.
I have been to Auckland War Memorial Museum for once times when I went to New Zealand. This museum is New Zealand’s first Museum,it a very large and fantastic museum that introduced about New Zealand to immerse you in the local history and culture.I could spend a day there without getting bored.
C.
Situated in Auckland Domain with views over the city and harbour. The museum is a war memorial and the fallen soldiers names are carved into the walls on the upper level. This alone is quite poignant as there are a lot of names and New Zealand population was not large. When I visit, I look for my family members who did not come home and pay my respects.
On the museum front it had probably one of the best Polynesian / Maori displays in the world. If you have the time and enjoy museums this is a worthy visit. Parking difficult to find in Auckland Domain.
B.
An example of one of the amazing family friendly exhibitions held at the Auckland Museum. Recommend seeing this in person for yourself!
Q.
One of the best museum I've ever been. I was skeptical because of "War Memorial" (Not a fan of war history) but found out this museum has way more to offer than just war-related stuff. Topics are diverse including history of New Zealand and Auckland, Maori Cultures, Geography and my favourite section: Volcanoes, etc. Many interactive experience and creative 4D presentations. I never feel bored and I have learnt so much within 3 hours. Very well worth $28. Highly recommend this place to anyone.
A.
Fantastic cheap place to visit - something for the whole family! Personally I loved the natural history area and the volcanic erruption simulation. The museum is definitely worth a look if you are visiting Auckland. You will need atleast half a day to get around all the exhibits.
M.
The Maori cultural show was fun to watch and is one of the few ones outside of Rotorua. The museum is pretty big with tons of artifacts on Maori culture and New Zealand history.
A.
A great museum with vast collection and plenty of information. Often have special exhibition held in the foyer; and the museum is much bigger than it looks, so plan accordingly. The Maori performance is one of the must see. There are some parking in front, around, as well as under the museum; as well as around the domain.
k.
This is one of my favourite places to go on Auckland. It's relaxing and not loud. Aucklanders can get a my museum card that gets them into the museum for free any time. Anyone else it's a donation entry. But 100% worth a go. Nice view over the city. Not to hard to get to also had parking if needed. And top level has a computer room that you can search the military records.
D.
Awesome museum in Auckland! Keep it up!
L.
Fantastic museum. The Maori cultural performance and guided tour were both brilliant. Informative and engaging. Very enjoyable way to spend 3 hours.
C.
I loved driving through this place as the priceless antics crush underneath my tires in fact I live here because I went bankrupt and needed a new pet dog so I settled down in the underground car park
A.
The g your guide was outstanding. He shared his knowledge and welcomed questions. The place is gorgeous and had and excellent collection
J.
Wonderful place to explore with friends and family.
R.
Very interesting. The Gallipoli information is eye-opening for Americans, who didn't participate in that awful battle. When we were at the Museum near Armistice Day there were commemorative crosses arranged on the lawn, one cross for each of the 18,000+ dead in World War I. Striking. Could have spent much more time. Docent-guided tour very worthwhile.
S.
One of the best and most educational activities you can do in Auckland. From Maori and New Zealand history to international war efforts. My highlights were the volcano exhibit (with volcanic eruption simulation room), Scars on the Heart (New Zealanders at war) and the ancient relics from Rome, Greece and Egypt - complete with Egyptian coffin and mummy! You can easily spend a whole day here. Great for families with activities for kids of all ages. Keep an eye out for the temporary exhibits that come and go. Admission is free for Aucklanders and on a donation basis for other New Zealanders. Plenty of parking in the Domain and the whole museum is wheelchair accessible.
E.
Simply AMAZING!Things of Maori culture and historic is fantastic! There are Zero airplane and Spitfire! Also a lot of other great things to see and participated! I really(really!) recommend this place to visit!
N.
It's a proper comprehensive museum on the people, nature, and wars of New Zealand. For museum lovers it's a good place to spend two hrs and still needing another visit(s). Be aware - free admission for residence, fixed charges for foreigners.
I.
great views of Aukland, there’s always something going on there and the coffee shop is not bad.
D.
Well presented and informative.
Staff are extremely friendly and are only too happy to engage with the patrons.
G.
Reviewing, specifically, the SLEEPOVER WITH SEA MONSTERS Event.
It was AWESOME. Brilliant event. Excellent staff, actors, characters. Great food, educational, unique. Just BRILLIANT. Well done Auckland Museum!
M.
Great place to spend a few hours embracing NZ and world culture. The wildlife photograph exhibition was definitely my favourite. Highly recommend and free for NZ residents. Highly recommend taking kids.
D.
We loved the museum. The exhibits are creatively curated, and building itself is one of the best aspects of the museum.
A.
I spent almost 3 hours here and it's such an amazing place!! There's always something new. I came to see the Sea Monsters exhibition and it was AMAZING!! Highly recommend coming here, even when there isn't a big exhibition, it's still an amazing place.
D.
Went to the ancient sea monster exhibit for family day out. Was $27 each for adults and free for under 5.
Fun times. Also went to other part of the museum for the first time which was cool and free for those i believe. Good to take kids to and spend time.
M.
Its so pretty! There are so much to see and as a fan of history a few hours isn't enough to enjoy all the displays in different categories. Its beautifully built and I recommend you visit this place when you're in Auckland
R.
Very interesting Maori history. The gallery dealing with Cook's voyage is particularly enlightening.
The museum is currently undergoing renovation and extension, so is not as large as usual.
Bus 781 stops outside.
C.
A great museum and war memorial. Definitely worth a visit for an overview of NZ history and also a tribute to Kiwi veterans.
E.
Opted to skip the show and tour since we were on a budget. If you purchase early you can save a bit by using viator but it was sold out by the time we decided to go. It is about half history and NZ artifacts, 25% a mix of other countries and 25% war artifacts and history.
М.
Always a nice place to visit and kids-friendly.
They do set new exhibitions regularly and there's an awesome winter garden and domain to enjoy
P.
The Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira (or simply the Auckland Museum) is one of New Zealand's most important museums and war memorials. Its collections concentrate on New Zealand history (and especially the history of the Auckland Region), natural history, and military history.
E.
A very interesting place. Love the fact that there is plenty of things for children to interact with
d.
The museum is recommended for anyone who visits the country and wants to know the essence of New Zealand, is very varied and has interactive areas ideal for children
S.
Always a must see every once and a while even as a local. Good to bring family and friends here whilst they have travelled to New Zealand!
C.
I love take my son here on rainy days. This time we found the earliest Chinese flag.
G.
This place is a must, quite impressive, there are different wings, like war war I and II, vulcano, Art of. Different country's, my family and myself really enjoyed this place.
C.
This place was amazing. It's crazy what awesome things have happened in history. Definitely recommend.
L.
I Really enjoy coming back to the Auckland museum with my family, staff are very friendly and helpful. Also enjoy the great cafe food and coffee aswell.
C.
Some of it was amazing, but sad 2 see people have 2 go 2 a museum to see some animals
J.
A must do in Auckland!
amazing and interactive exhibits! and the best of all its that is for free if you reside in Auckland (doesnt matter if you are a national or foreigner). Just make sure to bring something to probe that you live in auckland (bank statement, electricity bill, etc)
A.
Good place and helpful staff
But the lights in this museum need redesign
It is too dark
K.
The Weird and Wonderful gallery is excellent for kids of all ages. Land and Origins galleries are also great. My 3.5 yr old found the volcano house simulator a bit scary but also had heaps of questions later. Great family day out
S.
Maori exhibition is the hight point of the museum, the rest is not very attractive. I loved the Maori part.
l.
Kinda pricey but the events are cool lol also the butterflies are so cool I took 70 photos uh dont mind the "hot" part ok yeah <3
B.
It's more than just war memorial but of Maori's, early settlers' and natural collections.
A.
A most interesting day. Covers so much. Enough to keep you interested for hours. Each floor covers different thing. Culture. Earthquakes and wartime.
N.
An excellent museum with many cultural and historic displays. We always enjoy returning here and seeing what has been modified/changed each time. Also the shows and events held here are amazing, well worth the visit, and the building itself is historic with great architecture. The surrounding grounds also have a lot to offer.
S.
Beautiful relaxing place to visit. Large park area surrounding.
F.
Beautiful exhibition and New Zealand display. Enjoyed the cafe with my family!
Customer service was great and helpful at directing us to the different floors and whereabouts
Lucky enough to find Car park close by.
Enjoyed my Visit
Great place and experience
A.
You can spend a good 3-4 hours here. It's a bit repetitive if you have visited other ones in new Zealand but with some additions.
L.
Fantastic Exhibits and huge. Could spend many days here. Free for Aucklanders. A great way to spend a rainy afternoon.
R.
Auckland museum is simply amazing. At times I had a tear in my eye. Amazing people and an amazing experience
M.
Great way to spend your day, beautiful building with an increadible view of the city surrounded by a big green park.
Once inside, there's a huge variety of topics, from vulcanology to local history and a lots of culture. if you are a war historian there is a war section where everybody can be transported back in time.
Nevertheless it is a free entry if you can prove you are a Auckland resident.
A.
Haven't been to the Auckland Museum in years! Was a great experience!!
P.
An absolutely beautifully maintained with a really good collection and history very clearly divided in different sections. A must go if you are in Auckland and visiting this city. It is free if you are a student. They also have a nice Cafe at the ground floor. Very helpful staff who guide you correctly into the museum.
K.
The best war museum I have ever visited ever . Everything there has so much details and the collections they have there is fabulous and the forest walk way to the museum was my favourite.
Z.
Awesome! I learned all about the NZ wars in the past. Great Museum!
R.
Very big and interesting. A lot of information about Maori culture, nature, animals of New Zealand and war.
D.
Loved the Maori and war exhibits because they told a lot of the history of New Zealand.
D.
Really interesting and unique exhibits. Love how it is free for Auckland residents.
s.
Great place to hang out with the kids, the butterfly show is pretty cool & the butterfly egg hunt is even more enjoyable for the little ones
K.
The Domain.Came Here With My Daughter On Saturday.
Huge place to come to even just for a walk around & fresh air . 🙂
A.
Great entertainment - jam packed with fascinating facts about New Zealand and Maori culture - allow the best part of a day to view properly - a number of special hands on activities for kids.
K.
Cool museum! You will learn a lot of war history! Highly recommend for those who will visit Auckland
F.
This is a wonderful museum filled with not only war history, but also loads of information and artifacts of the Maori people, nature and animals of New Zealand. To get the most out of it, especially if short on time, I recommend requesting a private tour from one of their knowledgeable museum guides. In addition, should you get hungry or thirsty, there's a small cafe. Should you desire a keepsake, there is also a wonderful gift shop.
J.
Awesome little rainy day activity. Its been 20 years since my last visit, awesome changes and modern vibe. Did not expect it yo be free which was a pretty good surprise, I think you just have to supply nz drivers license and they hook you up.
R.
One of New Zealand's premier museums and war memorials, showcasing the country's national and cultural history, as well as serving as a variety of temporary and special exhibits. Many displays and exhibits have been upgraded in recent years, greatly improving visitor experience.
The ground floor predominantly covers the history of the indigenous Maori people, featuring a traditional Hotunui meeting house and a Waka (traditional war canoe), along with various artifacts tracing the migration of their Pacific Islander ancestors to New Zealand. A cafe out in the main foyer provides coffee and light refreshments.
Meanwhile, the first floor hosts various a range of permanent and temporary exhibits, including the natural history, geology, flora and fauna of New Zealand, as well as art on loan from private collections.
The second and uppermost floor is dedicated to war memorials commemorating servicepersons killed during the First and Second World Wars. Along with exhibits depicting the experiences of New Zealand soldiers overseas (including the famed Gallipoli campaign of WWI), there is the Pou Maumahara Memorial Discovery Centre, a digital resource library and collaborative space where visitors can contribute to a digital cenotaph of family and relatives who served in the wars. Additionally, there are dedicated alcoves for displays of a Japanese Zero and a British Spitfire fighter aircraft.
Notes for visitors:
- One can quickly browse through the museum in an afternoon, but a whole day is recommended to fully experience the museum
- Bringing your own lunch is recommended, as the second cafe in the rear atrium has poor food, service and reviews
- The Maori and Pacific Islander galleries may be a little repetitive in some places, but may be of interest to international visitors
- The war memorial areas of the museum (including the Cenotaph and Court of Honour outside) are considered consecrated ground; approach with reverence and respect
- Free admission for Auckland residents with proof of residence, but rather pricey for international visitors ($25 per adult, $10 per child and $60 for a family of four)
J.
This museum is incredible. Situated at the top of a hill in a park, its absolutely beautiful inside and out - and no expense has been spared on any of the exhibits. I've been here many times, and will return every trip I take to Auckland.
R.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
The Auckland Museum is one of the most visited museums in Australasia. Its collections of Maori and Pacific art are of international importance.
This is one of the emblems of Auckland.
P.
This is really an outstanding museum. Good use of technology to facilitate learning. Well balanced for both adult and children. My kids loved the secret world of butterfly display.
S.
Had a great experience here today. The renovations have been completed and the Lego exhibition was awesome. It doesn't stack up to say the British museum (or Te Papa which I haven't been to) in terms of collection but what's there is good.
There are lots of facilities and it's very family friendly.
Wasn't an issue for me but if you're planning on having lunch there please note that the options might be somewhat limited and potentially pricey - however the aforementioned facilities do include places to sit down and eat your BYO food.
J.
Amazing museum for both adults and kids.
The staff on the front desk were amazing and helpful. The Cafe inside was delicious and fast and efficient service. I would definitely recommend going to visit this museum there is so much to learn and see.
E.
Nice venue, but museums must be for free.
Therefore minus 2 stars
A.
The history of New Zealand is beautfiully housed in a fantastic old building and set in the beautiful grounds of the Domain with hot houses and spectacular views of the harbor. I love this place - we got the general admission tickets and self-guided tour. So much history and natural history. Definitely recommend it. Take a lunch and picnic in the beautiful grounds.
M.
Went for a native bird project and found everything we needed, great experience
N.
Good museum, helpful and friendly staff
F.
We did the roof top tour and then the secrets tour and really enjoyed both. 1 hour of seeing behind the scenes, interesting facts and stories by very knowledgeable and articulate guides. These tours are designed for locals now that the cruise ships aren't coming.
M.
Lots to see. We tried to see everything in one go. To split it over 3 or 4 vists would be best.
S.
Took kids to see Lego display. Had a wonder round museum. Great way to spend a rainy with the kids
R.
Had a great time at the Lego Show. Super impressive builds.
m.
Surely you want to see things that are 5 millions years old as well as the history of the beautiful New Zealand besides the history of the world.
There are so many sections to departments to go through and learn about.
Kids as well as adults have many things to be entertained with and discover.
I love the simulator of the volcano as an eye opener on what might hopefully never happen in the event of volcanic eruption.
It's well recommended place to visit all the time.
C.
Great way to learn about New Zealand. This museum is pretty big and you can spend easily 6 hours. To get to the museum you pass by a nice park that you can also walk around.
M.
Great time at the museum! Always a blast 💯👌
m.
Must visit interesting museum. They also have Maury life style and a live show.
N.
Only thing is parking isn't so great. Lots to see, something for everyone. Great place for photos. Can walk around the domain for fresh air afterwards and feed the ducks.
Kids room is awesome!
X.
The guided tour was not worthwhile at all. Better off to explore the museum on your own and read the tags.
R.
A great place to take the kids so much interesting stuff to see and very informative and educational displays. The cafe is great to. I must see in Auckland.
B.
This place is really nice to learn about indigenous. Also you will learn a lot about war and how they prond of them. Unfortunaly, I couldn't buy a tick as a student price. For the normal price it's quite expensive for students.
C.
Checked out the giant lego exhibit. It is amazing!
S.
Beautiful displays on a wide variety of topics. So much to learn and do. Very interactive for the little ones, a fun learning experience for all. Parking is a nightmare, so go early!!
F.
Well worth a visit - make sure you check out the Maori cultural performance
L.
Auckland War Memorial Museum is one of the best Museums I've ever visited.
Full of past war memorabilia and exhibitions with story's that will fascinate and educate.
B.
Great place to spend time with the kids or friends. Especially when there is a feature exhibit on particular subjects...
Dinosaur exhibit are always a favorite of me & my children... Plenty of parking & a cafe with great food. Plus the Botanical Gardens, meaning you can really make a day of it...
R.
Spend your time in the Museum and enjoy, lots of fun.
N.
Very great place for Kids and Adults. Quiet and informative. There are two cafes inside, toilet and wheelchair access. Free entry for Auckland residents. Paid for out of Auckland residents.
L.
Really good museum - free to residents or if you can show a long term visa. Has some fascinating short and long term exhibitions.
Very good kids area, with lots of fun activities.
P.
Awesome place to visit and learn history
Z.
The guided tour is very interesting and educational! Well worth it! Many interesting exhibits about NZ and Auckland.
u.
Good to been there.my kids enjoyed the volcano room...good to knew all about Newzeeland and Mario culture
A.
I loved it, but the toilet had some poop in it and it didnt taste that good
J.
It has a lot about Maori culture, even if it is a war museum. For me, that is good as I cane to this country with the perspective to learn more about its people, history and culture.
My ticket included Maori Cultural Performance (30min) and a Highlights Guided Tour (1h).
The only thing is that there is a discrimination against foreigners as the entrance fee is higher for us than for natives. I wonder what would Kiwis say if the Louvre in Paris had one price for EU citizens and 20-25% higher for Kiwis?
M.
A comprehensive history of New Zealand that’s told through the lens of war, including a fascinating look at Maori-Pākehā integration as New Zealand was formed.
The museum building is impressive. Some of the exhibition areas are a little dull but these are in the minority and more than made up for by the main exhibits.
The guided tours or audio tapes are a must to get the most out of your trip.
R.
Amazing location and spectacular grand building, plan to leave at closing time on sunny spring afternoon, long shadows cast across the war memorial lawn, panoramic views of both the Waitamata Harbor and the Hauraki Gulf out to the picturesque Rangitoto Island.
J.
Museum is great however half of it is under renovation at the moment.
The 1928 cafe is amazing though!
L.
Always enjoy our trip to the museum, lovely view when you go outside. Brickman wonder of the world, was amazing.
D.
Enjoyed our visit. We recommend Tuitui. We had the mussels and chicken, bacon pizza. Too much for two. We'd never been before so wasn't aware of portion size. Next time we'll do two small plates or a pizza only. Great service. Lovely dining area with a long bar alternate seating or outside the cafe which is a noisy option. Limited beer and cider choice was our only, tiny, disappointment.
A.
Great museum. Wonderful place to learn about the history and culture. The Maori cultural performance was lovely as well.
V.
Terrific place to learn about New Zealand, from its natural and geological history, the Maori culture and people, to British colonialism. It can be a bit incongruous at times. In one gallery/exhibition, there will be a display about the Chinese in New Zealand and then out of a nowhere comes a gallery/exhibition on volcanos.
M.
Very interesting. And for free If you are a Backpacker - you Just have to Show Proof of Adress and your Visa.
R.
Great for families but the exhibitions here tend to stay the same, returned after 5 years to find things largely unchanged which minimizes return appeal. Things are also quite expensive at the gift shop. A small pin the size of a pea can cost around $16-20.
H.
We spent about 2.5 hours wandering through each level of the museum. We learned about Maori culture, volcanoes, wildlife, dinosaurs, various wars and our 6 year old was kept entertained the whole time. Very interactive and interesting.
H.
We were strolling around the Domain and decided to go inside the museum and surprisingly found out that the Maori section was for free. An important collection of Maori pieces, even 2 houses inside (the traditional one used for storage and the other one for meetings) and art pieces, jewelry etc
P.
Great museum. The grounds are fantastic for walking around in. The museum itself has well presented and meaningful displays. The cafe/bistro is the only drawback as it's not very child friendly. If you're bringing kids I'd recommend that you bring your own food and have a picnic outside.
D.
Always a great view happy to say didn't see a single piece of trash lying on the ground
B.
Great exhibits, fantastic building, lovely surroundings, great way to spend a few hours.
C.
In need of a general revaluation of some old exhibit. We know more about history now and it should show.
Love the interactive parts and view from common people at the great world events. Definitely a good place to visit and child friendly
M.
Very broad themed museum, a must see for travellers new to New Zealand. The descriptions for the exhibits could use a few more details. The guided tours are hit and miss depending on who is doing it.
J.
It's been a couple of years since I've been and they've made some improvements. The kai room (eating area) is now on the ground floor so you can leave pack lunch there before traveling around. There is some wonderful new exhibits. We loved the 'Imaginarium', especially the full size tree sculpture.
J.
Excellent exhibitions, big enough to spend an entire day inside if you really want to read and learn about everything they have exposed. I really love the Moa birds on the natural history part of the museum!
A.
The museum is beatifully nice. Also there's a EV charger at the back entrance.
H.
Can't beat the stunning view with some historical events!
s.
Haven't been for years but thoroughly enjoyed it. Got a bit teary eyed when I saw
the 21st Battalion Memorial Panel as my Dad was a Sgt in that battalion.
C.
Butterfly exhibition hands on, interactive enough to entertain us for 1 1/2 hours. We were 3 adults (43-72) and 2 young girls (4&10)
We will return for your next interactive exhibition .
S.
Awesome service. Love the ambience. Good surroundings and we go for a walk around musuem mostly every day. Probably I should take my drone to shoot a video about musuem and the surroundings. Not sure if that's permitted.
T.
Awesome seeing pasefika n Maori history the tools arts n crafts 😊😊
K.
Absolutely amazing. Every part of it has extraordinary amount of information. Beautifully presented! Hope to become a member next time we visit. 10/10.
A.
A great to place to visit and look at different parts of the museum. It got a lot to offer from kids discovery area to war, historical or geological and everything in between. They've changed it recently in design and quite often have a very good exhibitions like Lego or WoW art. Could come here for few hours or for the whole day. Inside located a café so you can get a bite if you get hungry.
C.
Handy cause ita free amd clean tooalot more staff than normal
S.
There is amazing collection about the war history and its a great education place to bring your children or anyone.
R.
Variety of all ethenic antiques and nice illustraion of different culture
Realistic objects, birds and animals to see
L.
Lovely outing definitely something worth seeing ❤️
J.
Such a impressive building. Exhibitions we're good and kids loved it.
M.
Amazing place full of knowledge, beautiful people and awesome exhibitions.
Can quite easily spend a whole day here.
Split across three levels amongst stunning gardens / lawns.
Easy to get to and a quick walk from Parnell station along with a bus route.
Even if you dont go into the muesum go for the views.
A.
The kids enjoy so much with the music exhibition, they can experience to be a DJ. The kid zone also fun, 3D drawing quite a new stuff to play with. They also have dinosaur, aeroplane, and other stuff. Free for NZ resident. Good food at restaurant for rest. Great for school holiday.
N.
Great for all ages, with activities for children and nice exhibitions often, last i’ve been Lego exhibition
j.
This museum is huge. You will need to spend a couple of hours to complete it. Very education and interesting. If you find that the museum's parking is too expensive, you can try your luck along the roads near the museum for free parking.
A.
Simply amazing!
M.
Armistice Day commemmoration. A sea of crosses. Each cross is named and represents the 18,700 who lost their lives...Lest we forget! Very moving
M.
Educational, nicely layed-out. Always intriguing to visit, learn something new every time!
A.
Very interesting Maori exhibit and the volcano area is also very enjoyable.
S.

H.
There for Anzac ceremony. Huge crowd. Must go back to Museum , it looks impressive.
J.
Learn everything about Aotearoa. From its origins and Maori culture, to its wonderful geography and the world war memorials. Great for kids too, plenty of interactive activities.
L.
The expeditions are so good, they cater to all age groups, highly recommend 😊
E.
Did not go into the museum. The War Memorial and the grounds are very nice. Its location offers a very nice view of Auckland.
J.
Has wonderful exhibitions, incredible collections and lots of ways to interact and learn about history. Love weird, wild and wonderful!
A.
Gosh, it was chaos being school holidays but it was fantastic! So many new exhibitions to see. We only got around half of it so have plans to go back soon and finish the rest.
M.
So much to see in the Museum.. Highly recommended
T.
The Auckland War Memorial Museum is definitely worth a visit and offers a lot for both adults and children over several levels. The entry is free for Auckland residents (proof of address required).
We have visited the 'Sea Monsters' exhibition today and left it with mixed feelings. Children get well entertained but in case you have already seen similar exponates somewhere else, this experience does not add anything special from my perspective (it is just solid).
G.
Had alot of interesting exhibits, just wished there was more interactive experiences. Aside from that, I definitely recommend for an afternoon out. Especially appreciated the WWI and WWII exhibits
B.
Amazing place to spend hours and learn about New Zealand history.
J.
Beautiful place! A 4 hour trip thru this huge building
h.
Always always love my visits here! Its a beautiful museum, I especially love land and origins myself but whether its cultural history, moari history or just wierd and wonderful things, you will love auckland war memorial museum
I.
Excellent museum. Fantastic local cultural display, well worth the visit
D.
Good Maori and Pacific exhibits and collections. Recent renovation makes it really nice and updated. The Lego exhibit is awesome.
P.
What an amazing place in our own backyard! Best of all its Free! So much to see and explore. The architecture is breathtaking in itself. Auckland domain next door so ideal for a walk after
Á.
Great museum with amazing collections and heritage. A day is barely enough to see everything properly, so we'll definitely coming back.
N.
Very good wish I had more time there but walked so left it a bit late
b.
Beautiful place well set out lots of variety
A.
Stirring experience walking down the hall of remembrance..as I'm from out of town, thought this place would be an afternoon filler..personally, I think there's been too much ratepayers money spent on the place looking good rather than the content..trip lasted an hour.
s.
A wide array of displays from different cultures - including a Mummy. Lots of war memorabilia including a spitfire and another war plane. Unfortunately they started closing the museum early and so we didn't have as much time as we were expecting too.
L.
GREAT PLACE, AWESOME VIEWS. I LOVE IT....
S.
Only had an hour to check this place out. Would recommend making a day of it.
R.
Used to love coming here as a youngster. Only come here now driving school bus charters. Haven't recently toured around inside thoroughly. Food is a little expensive but quality pretty good. Some months ago since I've eaten here though. Am sure would still make great day out for anyone that hasn't been here before. Quite an impressive place with great veiws. Immensely educational whith interesting displays and galleries. Something for everyone but not as good as the Wellington "Te Papa", so I have been told.
T.
Alot of interesting historical collections to view
T.
Beautiful views, nice walks around. Enjoyed my visit.
A.
Went to the butterfly exhibition with the little nipper, and wifey, pretty cool - had a fun time. Good exhibits in the museum in general and had a nice coffee here too.
A.
Very well maintained. Lovely exhibits. Clear and informational. The museum staff are nice and friendly and very helpful. Always greeting you with a smile. Its a good way to learn about New Zealand history and the way the country has developed into what we've become.
R.
Lots of interesting stuff to see!
M.
Sunday afternoon visitors made quite a good crowd. Went to "Being Chinese " photo gallery and World War 1 and 2 gallery. Saw the ZERO kamikaze aeroplane.
L.
Really good museum! The World War sections are great! The memorial room is so well presented.
v.
Good view infront of the museum. Can walk to here via a nice path of Auckland domain
C.
Great transit connection spot at a fantastic site . Views of Auckland are spectacular.
D.
Wasn't expecting much when we visited here but it really was an incredible museum with a Maori exhibit. Definitely worth the visit with affordable parking
J.
There are so many different activities in museum. Check the details of each activity on line before you go to avoid get yourself disappointed as some events are not free. But it is a fun place for children to discover native animals and plants and learn their names and know more about their own country.
N.
The Auckland War Memorial Museum is a MUST visit if you're interested in the history of Aotearoa, New Zealand. So much to see.
P.
As a local, with free entrances, it's a great place to take your kids since auckland is such a small city with little to do. Auckland Museum is a savior.
B.
So much information and care put into each exhibition, you will leave with a new perspective in the best of ways
L.
How wonderful to learn about the different cultures inhabiting Aotearoa.
B.
Beautiful and quiet at night , it’s also good for night views
W.
Very meditative place, beautifully maintained grounds. High up overlooking Auckland.
H.
Everything you need to know about Auckland's history ☺️👍
Very helpful staff, always something different to look at and appreciate.
V.
I think it must a bit boring because inside just have some molee things and a chriden place
R.
Always amazing art and objects to discover no matter how often visited and the current photo show is mean
E.
We spent a good chunk of the day here and we took the hop on/hop off bus to get around (this is the location where you can switch from their red line to their blue line tour and vice versa). You do have to check your backpacks and coats and there is food available in their cafe.
C.
Museum with a lot of information about Maori culture, and sculptures and objects from other nations.
S.
Amazing collections across many areas. Curation and presentation excellent. Allow plenty of time to explore this fascinating museum.
P.
Excellent museum with some great displays
C.
What a stunning place to see history from all parts of New Zealand

C.
Lovely place to spend a few hours surrounded by the native flora and fauna.
D.
Wow! Must go, must see..... Staff are so friendly and informative. Thankyou Elizabeth, you are amazingly welcoming. Saturday morning popularity, which didn't faze the volunteers and staff abit. Close by carpark. Cafe and shops available. A credit to Tamaki Makaurau
S.
It's such a happy feeling to talk to someone you like lying here🤍🤍
S.
Fabulous museum. Great exhibits. Sad part of the country's history. So well maintained. A national treasure for sure.
J.
Was just on the outside. Stunning building
K.
A very children friendly museum especially for dinosaurs lovers.
B.
Absolutely adore coming here with friends and family at least once a year, as well as for the beautiful ANZAC services they put on here every year (excluding this year due to covid). Very large facilities with plenty of bathrooms, and things to see. You can never really see everything in one visit, and warrants more visits in order to fully see everything. Love coming here~!
B.
A must-visit place to check out the beautiful renovations.
H.
Super Informative.
Really enjoyed my day here. From the walk in, I was greeted by staff at the desk, which makes all the difference for me.
I am a person who appreciates details and Auckland Museum really impressed me as the exhibits where set up for those of all ages, some more visual than others but informative none the less.
I was especially amazed by the Volcano exhibit as there was so much information to take in (in a good way). There was everything: from a house that lets you experience what it would be like to experience a volcano, to a video on how volcanoes moulded New Zealand.
I was impressed by the War exhibits on the 3rd floor. I felt especially in awe when I was greeted by the memorials of the NZ soldiers who fought in the South African War as I came up the stairs. I realised how insteumental NZ and the Pacific were during the Second World War.
Thank you Auckland Museum - I will be back soon :) keep up the good work!
Z.
It was amazing I rate it 10 out of 10
Amazing experience
D.
Such a magnificent building. Lots can be seen inside, especially war history.
Q.
Always a great place to explore and discover all exciting and new exhibitions, art, culture and history.
Stories of new and old, fashion and now with some of the exciting audio and visual auditorium exhibits now show casting. Was very intrigue to see Pacific fashion and dance showcased this week, thanks to AM and Pascific Dance NZ and director IoSefa Enari and Villian. Will recommend this space to everyone to come and enjoy. Thanks to everyone who attended and supported this event.
5 Stars

This was a great trip with the kids :) make sure you have at least four hours to see everything.
M.
Worth to go if you visit Auckland. I cried when reading the letters of WW1 soldiers and nurses here..
H.
The most interesting and fascinating artefacts on the history of New Zealand.
B.
Great museum
Different historical periods covered and well explain
The path to follow is logical
Free for resident, $25 for non-resident
The guide is not that expensive, and I would recommend it to understand everything
A lot of item are full of secrets that are only in the guide
S.
We love taking our grandchildren here and they always ask us to take them.
Lots to see and do for the under fives.
We always see something different each time we come. Very clean too!
b.
Magnificent museum in spectacular grounds. Lots of interesting Maori stuff, natural history and military exhibits too.
L.
The museum is a great place to spend a few hours. Lots of interesting things to see. The memorial should also be visited.
W.
Worth visiting excellent displays som very good artifacts
C.
As a country with a smallish population New Zealand's sacrifices in many wars is startling. The War Memorial honours this amazing contribution very effectively and with utmost respect.
A.
We spent a day here with six children aged 3 to 12, and all had a great time. Plenty of fascinating exhibits, and I always find something new and interesting. Friendly and helpful staff. Nice spaces too, good cafe with great coffee. One of the best gift/souvenir shops in town also, for quality of stock. The museum is in a beautiful part of Auckland with the Domain surrounding, and Wintergardens nearby.
R.
Sea Monsters exhibit was awesome. Loved the interaction sites for the children. Cool Auckland Heritage display
T.
I went to Auckland Museums with my friend at Recreate.
I saw display everything inside- to my horror as a sudden thunder cloud won't let go.
D.
Very good
O.
Would have been better if you could touch things.
M.
Very comprehensive museum with all parts of NZ's limited history covered well. Plenty of space to move around as well as very interactive displays
D.
Great day for the Grandkids. Still worth a visit👍😎
B.
Nice big museum. Can easily spend few hours in there and it's an easy walk from city centre.
C.
The exhibition halls were spacious, bright, and although it was busy it never really felt packed. I would love to come back again sometime soon!
h.
All collections are preciously. The Maori show is very good.
E.
Absolutely brilliant. Lots of cool things to look at, the staff is spectacular and the surroundings are stunning
E.
Very symbolic to those whome have eyes to see , sad that the real truth behind this amazing structure is hidden very well. Built at true north with corresponding cardinal directing doorways. Ooh the ritualistic masonry of it all.
Your welcome
Y.
Good place to go for depth of history. Staff is helpful and views are amazing
T.
Fantastic museum took my 2 and 4 year old with some friends and their small children it was really great for the kids I didn't have to worry about them destroying anything as the way the museum is set out is great and every corner has something to attract and distract small children! Wish we lived closer so we could go more often! Have not been for a few years and really thinks it's worth a visit pack a lunch and make a day of it!
T.
Time well spend here, will take bout 3-4 hours to enjoy the artifacts slowly
J.
I would suggest you set aside at least 3 hours for your visit.
F.
More than a War Museum with two halls on the history of Pacific Islanders, dinosuars, volcanoes and Sir Edmund Hilarys Ice Axe from the '53 Everest Expedition
M.
Fabulous Maori Cultural Performance and exhibition
N.
Awesome experience ❤️❤️❤️a must visit ❤️❤️ I'm definitely going to visit it again when I'm back in Auckland next time 😍
R.
Haven't seen inside but the environment is great.
D.
This is a great museum that has some interesting and creative exhibitions. Some great aircraft and educational clever cultural displays. The surrounding area is a beautiful green zone and I liked the walk up the hill through the trees and to hear the bird song along the way.
Not so sure I was a fan of charging/preying on international and out of town guests for the full entry fees, which I felt was a good way to discourage repeat visits etc. I do however understand that everything has to be accounted for and the costs involved in running an attraction like this must be significant. I did enjoy the experience overall. Recommended.
M.
A huge array of wonderful exhibits. You can easy spend hours here and still want more
B.
We went to the Anzac Dawn service. A great opportunity to show gratitude and thanks to the people that have defended our freedom. Lots of exhibitions were made available to the public by the museum.
A.
The Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition is on and it's great! We also saw the Maori performance twice and it was really good too. The Weird and Wonderful area still keeps my six year old busy as well.
E.
Yes well, rates at work a bit ho hum
R.
Excellent displays. Only free for NZ residents. Coffee shop, museum and war memorial combined. Excellent display of firearms and swords
J.
Went to see the Sea Monsters. Amazing exhibition. Then went through the Auckland local history exhibition, which was also fantastic.
j.
Amazing! So great to see the museum so very busy over the school holidays. We particularly enjoyed the wildlife photographic exhibition currently running it was outstanding and well worth a visit for all age groups.
R.
Lots to see and explore with the kids, although would love to go again by myself so I can take my time reading the information on the displays. A packed lunch is ideal to enjoy the outdoor space, there is also a dining area available for you to sit at and have lunch with the kids. The kids nature area is brilliant. Plenty of seating for parents to sit and observe their kids explore.
K.
Very cool stuff, loved all the art and artifacts from the groups of people who live in the Pacific Islands. We spent 3 hours there but only left because we have a flight to catch, we could've easily spent 4! The dinosaur area and the volcano areas were also a highlight. It was more than worth the entry fee.
T.
Plenty of renewed exhibits to explore. Nice as a local not having to compete with tourists and the "donation" doorway. Have to go back before the tourists come back.
N.
Beautiful building in a stunning location smack bang in the city. Definitely worth the visit.
R.
I loved this place. Well laid out, interesting exhibits and a great restaurant for lunch. 100% recommendation to anyone who's interested in anything New Zealand.
C.
The best museum I’ve seen ever, after traveling to 4 different continents. From natural science to WW2, from design art to a lot of other interesting exhibitions
Z.
I let my son go with a pen and he drew on all the paintings, so sorry about that! the staff were nice though
M.
We can stay there for hours going around all the exhibit with my son. I loved the kids level which is great to expand our knowledge of little and big things. As an expat, I like the Maori section because it gives us an understanding of the foundation of the nz nation. I wish we could get some of the Te Papa displays over there and that would make the experience awesome. Thanks a lot to the team too who are doing a great work at welcoming people even with Covid restrictions.
J.
Awesome place to walk around. So many things to see
e.
Ideal for studying geographical stracture of new Zealand...valcanic behaviour ...contribution of new Zealand for WW1and WW2...
S.
Really nice staff and a lot of great things to look at 😊
B.
Auckland is extremely lucky to have such an amazing display. Parking was pretty easy for a sunny Sunday. Toilets inside are not easy to find.
We'll be back again to be sure.
j.
Second time visiting! Definitely one of the best museums I've been to! travel by bus was easy with just a few minutes walk from the stop. Staff were friendly and though it's not free for tourists it's worth the fee.
Great place to learn about New Zealands history with 3 levels and lots of rooms to explore. My favourite was the interactive volcanic eruption house exhibit! Definitely worth a visit!
c.
Excellent place to learn about NZ history and culture. You will need at least two full days to see everything.
K.
Always a very moving a interesting place to visit.
The time of year, the seasons and the light all play a part in the way I like to capture the mood of this grand museum.🇳🇿
d.
Not sure what the anniversary or occasion was to mark (sorry)... But the hillside outside the musuem was covered with crosses marked with the rank and names of those who presumably had died in WWI and WWII... Had a sombre sense of the scale of lives lost.
L.
Very nice to look around , but due to school holidays very noisy . And no control of children running around banging into you.
Unsafe for the older person.
D.
Great museum with a lot of free exhibits
S.
Gorgeous staircases and main foyer areas. Beautiful exhibits, a good shop and plenty of staff to assist with directions or questions. Good for children and adults. The grounds are well maintained, too. When you drive by at night, there are colorful exterior lights that dramatize the architecture.
