Bring food, download movies and podcasts, and get comfy. Glad I did the journey but probably wouldn't again. The North Island just isn't that interesting with mostly farmland. Still snapped a few pictures though from the windowless car at the front.

The best journey ever. 11hours on a train traveling from Auckland to Wellington.
During travelling, I can say that I never get bored to stay on a train because of the perfect scenery. It's a scenic route that you can see New Zealand's life.
Recommend to you all. If you have a plan to traveling to New Zealand please try to take a train on the route "Northern Explore"

Great trip from Palmerston North to Auckland. Not a huge amount of legroom, and its a little uncomfortable to the neck to look out the window for long periods. It was dark for the last hour or two, which means that you can't see much. But overall, a great trip. Outside observation car is great (make sure you get there early for the Spiral). We took our own food and drinks, so not sure what they are like from the restaurant, but it seemed to have a steady stream of people buying stuff. Toilet pretty clean. Fairly steady on the rails and not particularly noisy

The Northern Explorer is an unforgettable experience either for the tourist or resident. You are in flat Hamilton and next minute you are in gorgeous middle earth on the Central Plateau. Staff are really friendly but you shouldn't need them much since you will always be looking out the window. I've done some photography on the Northern Explorer and she looks beautiful as ever from the outside. From the observation car you have no windows and the wind blowing in your hair, feeling the temperature change as you climb to National Park, and back down again past Ohakune. The Kapiti Coast is amazing too, it is the only part where you can see the ocean, but blame what the most efficient route to build a rail line in the early 20th century on. Some points of interest include: the Rauriumu Spiral, Horopito, Makatote Viaduct, Hapuawhenua Viaduct, Mangaweka, and the Kapiti Coast. This is a once in a lifetime journey and you should definitely consider it one time.

What an awesome experience from Wellington to Auckland with a stopover in Ohakune. So much fun for everyone. Best to book 3 or more as you most probably get a booth seat with table in the middle. If you have kids bring a cards, colouring books ect to have fun while travelling. The outdoor carriage is an awesome experience. The cafe is packed with kai but you can also bring your own kai and drinks. Toilets are clean and surprisingly spacious enough. Will definitely be trying the others too ... tranzalpine ect.

Loved doing the Northern Explorer rail from Auckland to Wellington. The views are amazing, the seats are comfortable and the staff are very accomodating. Makes travelling for 7 hours feels shorter and fun.

Lovely trip. Vocal guide with personal headset is available the ride between Auckland and wellington takes almost 10 hours but you will never get board and feel like dosing off as its very exciting telling the story of building the railway with all the challenges and changes taking place. There is a cafe on board, bathroom and a photo deck at the front of the train.

I booked this as a surprise for my son who turned 13 and adores trains. Can't say that this is my idea of fun but my son, an entire month later, is still thanking me for it. And it actually was pretty good for a 12-hour ride. The seats around the table were comfortable, we could charge our devices, the range of food and drinks was pretty good with reasonable prices, the audio commentary was interesting and the staff were so attentive and friendly! Of course this is New Zealand so the scenery was fantastic even on a wet day. I expected to be bored out of my brains but was pleasantly surprised.

The train left on time, staff were really friendly and helpful, and the 11-hour Northern Explorer experience as superb. Will bring my family next time.

Great train trip. See the north island without the traffic. Inexpensive way to get from Auckland to Wellington. Staff are friendly and helpful

This scenic train is one of the real pleasures of New Zealand. Undoubtedly this is one of the best ways to enjoy North Island's awe-inspiring landscapes.
My partner and I were on board the Auckland bound Northern Explorer last Sunday. It was an unforgettable experience from start to end. The journey commences from the grand and impressive classical style railway station in Wellington, which adds to the whole "railway journey experience". (What a pity Auckland got rid of their grand station!). From the staff at the ticket counter and the luggage carriage to the crew on board everyone is very polite, helpful and friendly. The seats are comfortable, spacious cafe coach is well run, toilets are well maintained. The observation carriage is hugely popular...the wide open vistas enhance the sight seeing experience. The train leisurely rolls through incredible scenery. The highlight of the journey is the majestic Mt Ruapehu...it's spectacular slopes and snowy summits will take your breath away. To our great relief we found a complimentary shuttle bus waiting at the tiny Auckland station to take passengers to Britomart Station. I'd give this train 10/10 for it's great service and cleanliness.
"Eighteen years old and reading J.R.R. Tolkien for the first time, I was sitting on a train as it left Wellington and rumbled up through the North Island. During the twelve hour journey, I'd lift my eyes from the book at the familiar landscape - which all of a sudden looked like Middle-earth." Peter Jackson

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Staff were great and train was a beauty!

Having travelled on here many times before I was really looking forward to my Auckland to Wellington trip. Unfortunately the weather was terrible this time, which is obviously not the fault of theirs.
Outdoor viewing decks currently closed due to idiots putting themselves in danger.
PA/commentary also not working which was really unfortunate and made the 11 hour trip seem a lot longer than it has in the past. It would have been nice as a goodwill gesture if they'd offered a coffee voucher or something, seeing two of the main 'features' weren't working.
I thought staff could have made more of an effort to point out places of interest, I realise they wouldnt have time to do this all the time but once or twice would have been nice.
Roast chicken meal was wonderful, hot egg and ham wrap not so much. A pretty good selection of food on board, or you can pre-order.

Definitely a great experience with fantastic staff, comfortable seats with plenty of leg room, and an outdoor viewing car for taking pics. A long journey, but worth it.
Each seat has a power point to recharge or use with your devices. Be warned though, throughout most of the journey, there is no connection to cell towers, and the train does not have an internet connection. But you aren't catching the train to sit on the internet all day anyway.

Absolutely loved this experience. A wonderful way to travel NZ and see the country. Highly recommend. Warm, friendly crew. Comfortable seating, with easy eye viewing. Excellent value for money.

Very impressed with modern style carraiges(cars). Comfortable and quiet, great idea with the outdoor viewing car, makes for good photo opportunities. Friendly helpful staff, and with the Café car as well making an enjoyable experience. Am looking forward to my next trip.

The train was great. Food was decent for what it was. Staff was the highlight of the trip. All very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend for a nice relaxing day trip through the country side.
R.
Good trains and great views. Staff, however let it down. Get rid of the old railway staff and bring in people from the hospitality industry who know how to treat passengers as valued guests, not just a hindrance to their day.
R.
Beautiful architecture steeped with history and surrounded by lush green gardens with a statue of the famous Mahatma Gandhi. You must visit the awesome coffee shop inside, with two guys who greet you with a smile and make the best coffee while waiting for your train. Sweet As!

Awesome train. Friendly staff. Gives you a bird's eye view of the new Zealand countryside without the stress of driving..
A.
People were very friendly and helpful, but going to the train station by foot isn't obvious, you have to walk on a what looks like car only road and it's not clear I'm on the right road still your basically there.
J.
Excellent trip relaxing lovely scenes with so much variation comfortable seating.not crowded
S.
Strange place to leave the train. It's quite a way out of the centre of Auckland so be prepared for a long walk or a taxi ride.
P.

(Translated) The seats are more spacious and comfortable. The price of the dining car is not expensive and convenient. The scenery around the 10 hours to Wellington is a bit single, which may be more attractive to tourists who have just arrived in New Zealand.
(Original)
座位比较宽敞舒适,餐车价格不贵也很方便,十个小时到惠灵顿沿途景色有点单一,对与刚到新西兰的游客来说可能会有更大的吸引力。
