Reviews of Akaroa Museum

Did you know that Akaroa was a French Settlement at one point? I've seen the street names (such as Rue Benoit and Rue Lavaud) many times but it never struck me. So it was good that my partner and I visited this museum because it was quite informative to read all about the settlement, the residents and the primary industry such as the tweed industry. A neat little museum to visit!

Free entry. Worth a visit. Has many exhibits for a free museum. You can enter the old courthouse and cottage. An interesting film documenting the history of the area plays in the courthouse. Friendly staff.

Very much enjoyed all the Interesting displays of local history. " Le Bons Bay " writren by Garry Brittenden, was found on the book display, an excellent and informative read .

Great spot to visit as one day trip from Christchurch! It takes 1.5 hour by car and the Akaroa museum tells you all the story of that area! Why so French style town? Why here? And many more!! You can watch their history video about 20mins in the court right next to museum. Must visit here!

Small museum, full of information! Historic building that you should visit!

This place is so beautiful. A great place to spend time in a nice day. Even has a park for kids and a restaurant to chill.

Absolutely fantastic little museum. Some amazing history. Friendly staff and I have purchased a couple books too. Colin's New Zealand wildlife book has helped me identify our beautiful birds on the peninsula, well priced. .I would highly recommend this museum to any visitors to Akaroa.

I wanted to know how Akaroa became a french town. However not many I could know from this museum.

Friendly and extremely nice staff. This little Museum is really a gem. Well designed, interesting and modern. Not dusty relics around. From the main hall you take a small door to the left and will get you to the old court cottage, a 20’ movie showing Akaroa history. Extremely worthy!

A great video about the history of Akaroa. The other rooms were spacious and well organised with plenty of interesting exhibits - Cocksfoot seeds being an unlikely but interesting display.

Great, free way to learn about the history and settling of Akaroa. Lots to look at and the digital interfaces make for a great way to include even more information. The courthouse attached to the museum is well worth looking at, with the video.

Great little museum, has a bit of everything from artifacts to a great 20min video giving an overview of the history of the area. It's also fairly wheelchair accessible but the small lip/step at the front door may mean assistance is required for some.

The museum is located on opposite side of isite centre in Akaroa. The entry is free. The muesum covers the whole story behind Akaroa origin to present state. It also has the oldest house in Akaroa in its boundary. The work at the oldest house is not much started but planned to be done in near future.on other side of muesum the Akaroa court office from d days is restored for visitors to have a look of it.

Worth popping in. Entry is free. There's a lot more stuff in there than its small exterior might suggest. Some genuine old Maori artifacts, a good history of the area.

Pleasant museum. The information video in the old courthouse building is 20 years old and looking dated. Nice way to pass an hour on a rainy day.

day trip from Christchurch Central to akaroa on the French connection bus awesome day to explore the French town the giant house worth a visit expensive to view but worth the visit the akaroa township itself Murphy's chip for lunch value for money $20 .00 for salmon and chips and a can of drinks chips very crispy and a filling meal. a bit of hike to the giant house. pick a fine day for a visit to the French township.

Great little piece of Akaroa history. Including akaroas oldest house. It's also free.

This is a small free museum about the history of Akaroa. Being the only French settlement in New Zealand it has a cool backstory. There is a whale vertebrae on the wall that was pulled from the harbor in a net.

Nice piece of local history. You can spend an hour here. A few small things for the kids to play with.

Looking for history and ancestors. Man at the museum found what i was looking for. Totally enjoyed my visit and shared information with family back home. Thank you so much for all that you gave me and keep up the good work.

Great museum, very well laid out and worth a visit - we were glad we visited before heading out to explore by foot and boat as it was nice to know a bit about the history of what you are seeing.

Great local museum with a real sense of place. Lots of information for the floor space and the movie about local history in the old court building next door very well composed.

Small, but good. Especially their 20min movie shows nicely how an completely unpopulated area gets to where Akaroa is now. I stayed ~50mins.
