Reviews of Riccarton House & Bush
C.
Stunning!
Great restoration work, it really takes you back to it's original time. Really gives you the feeling of travelling through the eras with each addition of the house showing beautiful characteristics of it's time. The giude does an amasing job at going through the history of the house and the family from the start to the end. Could not recommend this place more!
Bonus: there a small bush of native trees just outside the house, perfect quick walk.
K.
Beautiful house in beautiful garden. Food not cheap but very well done. Yummy. Beautiful Bush walk lots of bird song surprising to find mature Bush in centre of Christchurch.
K.
I took my wife for a surprise birthday present, I am so glad I did, I would give it 10 stars if I could, the tour guide was xcel, I would love to own a house like it, Cafe staff were xcel
M.
The setting, as always, is very nice. I visited the garden/ park and house for a coffee and a snack.
I was disappointed at the lack of diversity in the otherwise Beige Food Display. No options for gluten free or vegan.
The $6 glass of juice seemed overpriced.
On top of that I felt uncomfortable with the bird flying all over the room (they release droppings every 15-60 minutes while flying or perching), walking on the tables and eating from unsupervised plates: Very unhygienic. Not happy.
N.
Riccarton House is a fantastic venue for private functions. We had our wedding here recently which was made extra special with the help of the team at Riccarton House. The whole team was attentive and helped our day run smoothly from start to finish. An extra shoutout to Amanda for being there on the day and making our night perfect.
The catering was excellent quality. The food and drink selection was divine!
Highly recommend visiting for any event you are planning, or even just for a coffee break and a tour of the House. 11/10

This place has a lot of history. Amazing place to visit. Love the Ambience and a the food is amazing the staff are very friendly. There is outdoor seating as well. They do events too. And they are very nice place. Its a lovely. They have smallwater stream running and a huge garden. Parking is free. Must visit if you are in Christchurch.
H.
Beautiful house but tour wasnt very insightful. A quick Google search gave me a huge abundance of info that makes the visit alot more worthy. The adjacent cottage is the first building ever built in Canterbury so definitely a must for the history buff
C.
Lovely old renovated home of the Dean family. Beautiful gardens, and bush walk. By the river with bird life.
R.
A gem of a place located near Riccarton bush. Was here on a Saturday and the farmer's market was adjacent to this house. There were guided house tours offered at half-hour intervals on Saturday forenoons. The person registering the names for the guided tour was very polite.
R.
Great historical location busy on the weekend
M.
Fantastic tour of the house. Well worth doing if you enjoy history or heritage homes.
S.
Lovely place for a cuppa, with nice surroundings, a bit of bush, river, flowers in the garden and big shady trees. Good place to walk a little, breathe fresh air in the bush and have a cup of coffee! Does not open on Saturday, however there's a market in the morning, selling food , fresh produce and some meat, eggs, etc.
M.
Forget all the modern 'stuff' in Christchurch - there is a historic gem waiting to be discovered. It's not just the grand old house but also the history of the Deans family that captivates the visitor. Guided tours of the house are available at 2pm every day except Saturday. The well trained guides tell the story of the Deans family and how it all began and take the visitor through the lovingly restored and furnished rooms of the house. The highlight for me was Jane Deans' room - a relatively small room where she lived from 1856 until her death in 1911. The visitor can see the leather kidd gloves John Deans gave her when he left Scotland for New Zealand. Jane waited for him for 9 years until he finally asked for her hand in marriage. She kept these gloves all her live...

Absolutely loved the tour of the house and the Deans family history is so interesting. Our tour guide was fantastic she was very informative. I would totally recommend doing this tour.
J.
Early morning walk in Riccarton Bush was cut short by a Sou West storm. The lovely staff opened the door 10 mins early and served a great coffee for us, in front of the open fire. Thank you we will be back.😊
D.
A lovely garden worth visiting, especially on the market day you can enjoy the grounds with a coffee and local produce
R.
Took my mum to see Riccarton House - we both thoroughly enjoyed it. The tour guide was very knowledgeable. Beautiful place, would definitely recommend this as a must see.
K.
Lovely restoration job.
The gardens are beautiful and you can walk the preditor free area and listen to the birds.
Good coffee.
Market on Saturday mornings is great.
N.
Amazing atmosphere. Excellent taste. Good coffee. Great homemade butter with garlic bread. Kindly but slow response.
J.
Anita's tour was fantastic- history spans home country, settlement, Christchurch growth and development, family stories and architecture. The Deans women were amazing!!! Dont neglect the bush. We plan to return in December to see the trees flower.
P.
beautiful on a wet day, just too bumpy for wheelchair
D.
Good food, nice surroundings. Good place to meet with friends as there isn't music screaming out and you can chat. Rest rooms spotless
L.
Great coffee and friendly staff. Should rebrand cottage from "oldest family home in Canterbury" to something like "oldest European home in Canterbury" for obv reasons.
Good little rose garden. Nice walk with predator proof fence, protecting some native flora from possums etc. Interestingly filled with seemingly hundreds of wood pigeons.
Can imagine some people would enjoy having a wedding here.
T.
Love it so beautiful love historic and haunted places
S.
Worth a Visit. Beautiful house in a beautiful surroundings. Very peaceful and good to see what was reflective of the country in Victorian era
A.
Love this place. Good atmosphere, great staff. Lovely place where to chill out. Recommend
l.
Gorgeous river views and garden setting from the excellent cafe. And a walk through the stunning native Bush with beautiful nz birds flying all around is a must!
E.
Lovely old homestead surrounded by very nice grounds along the Avon River with a park of old specimen trees and access to Riccarton Bush (or Deans Bush), the wonderful old native forest remnant and just about the only native forest remnant on the Canterbury Plains. Great for a walk. Riccarton House has a nice restaurant with a stately indoor dining room and nice outdoor seating. They also offer guided tours of the building. On Saturday mornings the farmers market happens just in front of Riccarton House which is also worth a visit. All highly recommended.
G.
This house is a wonderful place to visit. Reasonable prices for coffee and food. Dean's Bush is a special and ancient forest to experience what the forest used to look like before the English arrived.
J.
A lovely setting, very relaxing. Lovely Caesar salad. Nice coffee too.
L.
Most enjoyable outing we had in Christchurch! A relatively easy walk from city center. Nice lunch at the lovely little cafe; house itself is surprisingly large with beautiful woodwork inside. Tour was excellent and informative - we learned a lot about early settler life and the Deans family. Definitely take a stroll through the Bush - the sound of the birds chirping was incredible.
G.
Historical house situated in an attractive park setting, with an area of native bush. The Avon River flows through. The cafe serves quality food and coffee.
D.
Have enjoyed this place over the years, a wedding reception, a murder mystery, a regular haunt for coffee breaks. Delicious coffee and scones. Fantastic atmosphere, wooden panelling, the fire's going, background jazz music playing. This visit, a friend and I selected from the well priced lunch menu. My beef cheek was exactly what I needed. This place is a real ChCh treasure. I truly hope it's a place my children and my children's kids get to enjoy.
M.
Lovely place to dine/snack with family and go walkabout inside house and in grounds.
Great picnic spot too.
Beautiful, peaceful scenery, also perfect for a garden wedding 😍
C.
Great place to drop in for a stroll around the garden/house then pop inside for a rather nice food in rather nice surroundings. What a gem of a place! :) Another mandatory whey point for when we're in ChCh.
We also did a paid tour of the house; a bit more focused on the family than we would have liked, we're more into architecture, but it was well worth it none the less.
A.
Really loved this place. Best place to relax with a coffee, walk around, sit near the river. Or even have a gettogether or a business meeting. Full of greenery with a river. Best place to have a gettogether with intimate friends or family members. Good place to be alone too to write, read, or idea generation spot by thinking with a calm mind...
J.
I brought a Year 12 History class here a few months ago. We did a tour of the house and a guided walk through the bush. It was an amazing experience. Entertaining, but also very educational. The staff were friendly and informative and what we saw in the house and bush had real impact. The teenagers were all very positive about their trip and remained focused for the whole time we were there. Thanks a lot. I will be back with other groups in the future.
T.
The coffee and food are absolutely fine, and the historic house and surroundings (a large park-like garden, a stream with ducks, and a bush / bird sanctuary) are very relaxing; easy to forget you're a 5 minute walk from the busy Westfield and main road.
J.
One of my favorite things to do in chch is get a coffee and walk through the bush while drinking it.
Very good coffee (and food, especially their scones!) And the park is worth deviating from your normal day for. Breathtaking evened and bird calls. Hard to believe you're in the centre of a major city!!
R.
This cafe is a gem, set in beautiful surroundings of Riccarton house gardens. Drawn to the peaceful surroundings & great coffee, I became a regular for a week. I also returned because of the friendly staff (especially Sam) & great service.
L.
Really interesting place to visit and John our tour guide was outstanding in his knowledge, his attire and passion. He made our visit a delight. Thank you.
N.
Beautiful setting and relaxed atmosphere. Great historic part of Christchurch and well worth a visit. Take time for a walk through the nearby Riccarton Bush.
H.
What a lovely house! We were well-informed by our knowledgeable guide on a tour of the house, and felt that we learned a great deal about the Deans family and how they lived at the time.
A.
Enjoyed a coffee here outside in the garden.
P.
John was our guide through Riccarton House and he is so good. He has a passion and great knowledge of the hsitory of this historic home and we would thoroughly recommend a visit. Unlike some historic homes we were not restrained by barriers and we could wander freely throughout the rooms with the giide.
R.
Riccarton House I can take or leave, but Riccarton Bush, just beside it? Ohhhh, I love it. It's a 20 minute walk through bush... but in the middle of a city. Easy to forget that a few hundred metres in either direction and you're in a supermarket or in the middle of a busy intersection.. This place is quiet, and fresh, and like a little green oasis.
H.
Nice spot, especially with nice light on the trees and house.
A.
Saturday Farmers Market has great food available but be prepared to wait for your coffee, more time to buy treats.
C.
At first I thought the price for the tour to be expensive, but it was worth it. The guide is well informed and talkative. Since my mother tongue is not English I had some difficulties to understand everything, but he was very patient.
M.
Riccarton House is an elegant Victorian/Edwardian homestead that is surrounded by manicured lawns, mature trees, a series of gardens and native plants, as well as the River Avon. It was built in three stages – in 1856, 1874 and 1900 respectively – for the Deans family, whose members are widely recognised as the main pioneers of the Canterbury region.
M.
Great escape from the hustle and bustle of life right in the city. Restful and calming bush walk. Beautifully restored building and great café.
K.
A nice and peaceful place to stroll around in a garden setting.
N.
Nice grounds, they did a very good meal for our event. Beer selection could be improved
M.

R.
Its a good place to hang out especially on saturday mornings - farmer market - you can get good deals on vegges, fruits, and food.
N.
Beautiful period style house from the early years of Christchurch, backed by a well reproduced example of New Zealand native bush. Well worth visiting.
f.
The service was very slow and many of the food options were unavailable. We had to ask for service a number of times. A case of understaffing
