Great place to spend the day and have a swim. Water is clear and the beaches are clean. The beach shop has a great selection of food and drinks. Looses a star for the toilet facilities as they are in need of attention.

One of those gems in Aotearoa, fresh water Dune lakes, beach life in Omamari, off roading, seals, tuatua, fly fishing and kauri forests all within 20 mins of each other! And on a great day you can watch Orca play! Love being here!

Serene turquoise water. Great place for kids. You can walk 100 metres into the lake and still be only knee deep in water

This is one of my favourite places in NZ. The beach is stunning and the lake view is awesome. The camping ground is next to the beach so you can enjoy being all day in the lake not travelling.

Dargaville's pride and joy! Is a great spot for an annual visit. The blue water is a clear winner for anything in the region!

Wonderful clear water. Safe swimming for kids and adults alike. The white lime like sand is absolutely stunning. Plenty of space for a day picnic. If you're into water sports, this is for you.

Crystal clear fresh water. Suitable for family day out. Powered campsites. Water gets colder as you go deep. Gets deep very sharply on some sides. Need to take care if you don't know how to swim. Plenty of amazing hikes around lake and on hills.

This is such a beautiful hideaway in the North island. The lake is stunning! The Doc site is great for bikes and has many trails and paths for walks. I was very glad to find that the side of the lake we stayed at had toilets and bathrooms! Great place for kids and a family holiday.

Such an amazing place... cristal clear water, even warm in the shallow parts. If you don't like crowded places avoid it in thw peak summer months, because it can get really crowded and once you visit this place you will see why. 😍

Stunning place pure white sands. We were there during the week and was amazing! Can see this place being crammed during the holidays and weekends. We found a great little spot. Just after the boat ramp, drive onto the grass and there are walkways to the lake. there are some areas to sit in amongst the grass plants. The water at this spot is very shallow and goes out a long way but take caution as it can be quit slippery walking out.

Been coming here since I was a child. Hardest part is learning to share this paradise as it gets discovered by others. A great way to enjoy it is to walk around the main lake taking swims whenever you get the urge

Kai Iwi Lakes is an fun day trip from Auckland, but if you want to have enough time, it's best to stay overnight at the nearby campsite or other accommodation. Water is shallow and flat near the edges, but gradually deepens as the water colour gets darker. Lots of people launching boats and jet skis aswell

B E A U T I F U L 💛 The scenery here is amazing in summer however it's hard to find shade here so bring cover perfect place for young ones and it's super sandy and shallow before you walk out into the lake. My kids loved it.

A smaller lake but as tranquil and peaceful as Lake Taharoa. Must visit and swim into.

Spent many hours there fishing for trout in my teenage years. Beautiful place, amazing photos to be had. It seems to be a lot busier now, I doubt the trout are easy to catch but you could swim or play all day in the water. Absolute must see for any visitor.

One of the best places to be summer time. Gotta say I had an awesome time there with family and friends. Make sure you add this to your bucket list at some point. 🤙

Beautiful warm water at Lake Taharoa. Lots of shallow areas for little ones to play in, as well as the deep areas for confident swimmers. There is a steep drop off which is very easy to see as the water is deep blue after the drop off. A covered playground, toilets dotted around and showers complete the publicly accessible amenities at the Domain.

Very beautiful lake. There's a few camps grounds. Pine beach is the main one which has power toilets and shower's. No cooking area or lounge area's. Beautiful water and magical while sands. Highly recommended

What amazing scenery. The pics were taken from the top of the hill I managed to climb. The bonus was little to no cell phone coverage. An ideal getaway from the corporate world. Trails to walk, diving from the pontoon, safe swimming, boating, trout fishing etc. Amazing friendly staff. I was told bookings for over Christmas opened July and is fully booked. You may get luck with a cancellation. Sand flies are not an issue if you remember to take you anti mozzie spray or equivalent.

Beautiful lake as always

Its about a 3 hour drive from Auckland and its so worth it. Clear water, huge area that is only knee deep so kids can play around and there is a huge drop off and a jumping board where swimmers can have fun, Would recommend to go camping here but if your looking for a day trip its still really fun

Wonderful place with lovely beaches. We took the bikes and rode around the main lakes. Good tracks, recommended to novice riders.

A beautiful paradise!! There was a foodtruck selling delicious food, coffees, cold drinks and ice creams too.

I loved this place one of the best place from my trip. My husband found this beautiful lake and I wasn't expecting to falling in love with this place. Its so beautiful and peaceful can spend long time sitting staring at the lake.

Really enjoyed camping here. We went in the winter, so it wasn’t busy at all. We actually only saw one other person, which was really nice. There’s a walking track around the lake that is really great. The water is super clear and in the summer would be tons of fun for water activities. Was a bit too cold to swim in September. Hot showers are $2 and are only at the bigger campground. There is supposedly trout in the lakes to fish for, although we didn’t try.

This place is breath taking! A tropical fresh water beach with white sand in the middle of the Far North of New Zealand. Honestly the WOW factor when you reach the top. The view is amazing!!! The water is super clear, you dont need googles 😌 I'm going back every Summer!!!!

By far the best place to visit and great for family holidays... I'm so excited for the next time I head north... bringing my family next time💜💙❤ just needs more toilets and bathroom facilities all way around the lake side... I LOVE LOVE LOVE KAI IWI LAKE🥰💜💜💜

Breath taking. Couldn't believe i lived within reasonable driving distance. Unbelievable sights. Far from the buzz of civilisation. Mostly tents, mobile homes, boats and the like. Went twice last summer haha

Just a quick visit but worthwhile heading back to camp there at some point.

Great place to enjoy water. I will definitely going to come back prepared. I should have bought a floater for my son and a good tent for my family to rest and eat and chat. I should have brought my inflatable paddle board too because the water is calm and relaxing. Lots of parking too. If youplan to camp over night i would suggest to book before coming because during summer i thnk excluding winter they usually fully booked. My 1yr old son enjoyed his time there. Though sometimes it's a bit chilly if you are wearing wet tops in a windy day.

Pros: Had place to ourselves on the western shores during week. Pretty, fab. Spot, ammazing fresh water lakes, clean, warm and very, very blue even on rainy days. Great for swimming and kayaking (take your own). BEST beginner cycle/walk track in NZ! 8km on large lake or 18km round all 3 lakes Cons: Facility for water and toilet only, but nice and clean. Real busy on public hols. And weekends. Bit pricy $40/couple/nt.

We love this summer spot. Fresh water lake, great for families. Only con is bathrooms need a bit of an upgrade.

If you camping, you must take everything. The lake is beautiful. The facilities needed to be cleaned more often. Stunk. A day trip would be best.

It's rather far from Auckland but upon arriving there, it's beauty is beyond description. Taken at the correct angle, you can say you are in Bora Bora and people will believe that.

Best lake I have ever been to so far. Crystal clear fresh water makes anyone fall in love with this lake. Great for swimming but beware that there are sharp drop offs and no lifeguards on site, so please take precautions as specially if you can't swim.

Awesome place, alot of visitors over long weekends.

Loved it so much. Could never get enough. I never swim in beaches because the salt water always irritated my skin and eyes. But Kai Iwi lake, I would 1000% recommend to all visitors in the area, to tourists and especially to all New Zealanders who are looking for more places to discover within our own country. Looks exactly like the pictures, has many attractions or activities to do. I came with my family there was about over 60 of us. And we went almost everyday of the week. The sand is nice and soft, people were kind and welcoming, they was also a little food truck with a dairy too. We set up our volley net and were able to have fun. Beautiful view. If your looking for somewhere beautiful, New, relaxing. This is the place to go, the water is not salty at all, and when you come out you won't feel disgusted or smell like salt water. 🤣✌️

Quite simply fabulous. Wish we had known about this place when the kids were younger. Saw scuba divers kayaks small yachts sea biscuits water skis jetskis. Hot food truck. Campsite well run.

Stunning clear fresh water with shallow water for little ones plus deeper water too. Great white Sand beach. Coffee cart in place over summer. Campsites are available on the lakes too but very popular, so book well in advance.

There are couple lakes you can swim in. The water is very clear that you can see the lake bed. Can be very busy during the holiday season but there are some quiet spots as well. There is a small cafe where you can order takeaway coffee.

Stunning location with three dune lakes and fringing native forest. Abundant bird life. Two camping locations. Great swimming but careful of the steep drop off.

Beautiful place! I'm not much of a camper, but coming here made me wish I'd come prepared for camping, coz we didn't want to leave! Beautiful water and scenery, and the staff there who look after the grounds are super friendly and helpful! We didn't see the no fire sign, so we were lighting our coal for BBQ, but one of them came to tell us in the nicest friendliest manner to put it off, and then he offered for us to use their gas BBQ instead. How sweet!

Located 35 km north of Dargaville, Kai Iwi lakes boast of pure white sand and crystal clear blue waters therefore ideal for safe swimming, kayaking, fishing, boating and water skiing. The three lakes at Kai Iwi lake compound are Taharoa, Waikere and Lake Kai Iwi. They are New Zealand’s largest dune lakes, formed by the accumulation of rainwater in the white sand, 37 meters at the deepest point. Extremely popular holiday spot with camping facilities.

I just love this place, crystal clear water and beautiful surrounding, night camping is an additional feature of this place. It's really Worth visiting here. Few things to note that there is no electricity(you can choose to stay in power site but may cost you more), network and less utilities, it's completely isolated place, so go with your all preparation and food if you planning to spend Tent Night.

Really beautiful, crystal blue clear water and lovely pale sand beach. The water temperature was great, the surrounding hikes were lovely. Definitely a highlight of New Zealand. Kinda want to rate it low so it gets less traffic and is less busy 😅

Lake is pristine, sandy shore is beautiful to sit and relax with family. Water is deep after circa 50mtrs no life guards or any other support facility available at this place. Don't leave valuables in the car.

The lakes were wonderful and we loved that it was fresh water rather than salt water and it was always very warm. Swimming was great and the scenery was amazing.

Hands down the most beautiful lake I’ve ever been too. Perfect place to have a day out with the family. There is also a walking track which encircles the lake. During summer you can buy food from food vendors.

So different from other places we have visited and stayed. Really enjoyed the bike ride around the lakes and learning about their history.

The water is so still that you can just sit there without being disturbed by waves, its gets deep really fast but it’s safe to swim if you know what you’re doing

Is such a beautiful place! Would be better if the grounds were non smoking and enforced to remain that way. This would encourage more families to visit and stay. Would also be great if drivers kept to speed limits (30klm going into campground from the main road and 10klm within campground), so kids could roam safely, like we used to when growing up years ago. Not difficult to keep to speed limits to keep kids safe. They dont know any better, drivers should. Common sense really, but many drivers seem to find it impossible, sadly. Other than that, absolutely awesome location! 😁

Perfect summer day spot. Doable as day trip from Auckland but would recommend to stay at top 10 kauri lands. White sand like Pacific Islands

Epic doesn't even begin to describe this place.

White sand crital and blue color water. We had very good time swimming, jumping and playing with friends there. Around the campground you will often see cute wild rabbits even at day time🥕🐇🥕. On the way to the lakes, after seeing the sign of Kai Iwi Lakes, continuing on State highway, turn right Omamari road then turn right at Kai Iwi Lakes road, do NOT turn right at Airstrip road if you booked Pine beach campground.

Superb location. A short walk to the lake. We chose to have a powered site as it was only $10.00 per night for our camper. Good flat sites.

Nice fresh water lake for swimming

I like the Mud Hill and the lake I like the food dad makes. It is fun. I like getting lollipops from the receptionist for the where's Wally. I like watching dad eat blackberries on the ride around the lake. I liked the bike track around the main lake because it looks cool. I think the toilets are good. I like kayaking at the ski lake and jumping off the pontoon. Overall I think the kai iwi lakes is my favourite place for camping and it's so cool and fun. The reason why I only rate it a four star and not a five is because the chips i had didn't have enough salt on them.

It is the most awesome lake i have ever been.. Its a must go to place.. The lake is crystal clear like completely transparent...you can see 2 different shades of blue of water... You can also register for camps and bring yout kayak or any other water gadget.. You can never forget this lake and will always wish to come back again and again

Beautiful spot to spend the day, the water is lovely and warm to swim in, clear clean water, and the water is a pretty blue colour just like you would find on a tropical island, sandy beach like shore, why go to the beach when you can go here!

Loved Kai iwi 😊 The lakes are beautiful Day visitors used the camping facilities which meant those who paid to stay had to share 😐 If you love walking there some great walks from easy to advanced fitness

Beautiful white sand beach, and a long shallow lead out to the drop off. Great freshwater swimming for the whole family. We've been coming for years! Highly recommended if you are in the area looking for something like a tropical retreat. Has food vendors in summer. Showers, toilets, playground, campground also right on/near the beach.

(Translated) A unique and beautiful lake in New Zealand with fine white sand and clean water. It is a pity that the rainfall has decreased in the past two years (2020-2021), and the original water line has advanced nearly 70 meters to the center of the lake, which has greatly reduced the shallow water area. Coupled with the explosion of holiday tourists, it was originally called Maldives, New Zealand. The lakeside area is starting to look a little crowded.
