Reviews of Dunedin Railways
F.
This really is a lovely city, we were fortunate the weather was perfect, beautiful warm day and we really saw the railway station and surrounding areas at its best.
This is named the " Most Beautiful Railway Station" in the world and it would be hard to disagree.
It's a treasure.
Definitely has to be on the " must see" list when visiting Dunedin.
Highly recommended.
R.
This is a very nice and old train station. The overall vibe is very historic and it does have historical importance too.
The station building is well maintained and open for visitors. Dunedin railway tours start from this place.
We couldn't experience that due to time constraints, but it is a highly recommended activity if one has got time.
The surrounding areas are scenic and clean. There is an art gallery inside the train station building which is worth a visit too.
The gardens outside the premises are nicely maintained and attract a lot of tourists.
A must visit place while one is in the city.
M.
Fun train times🎉worth doing both trips
S.
Magnificent Architecture with a lot of detail. Well maintained front gardens is an additional beauty to the already impressive railway station. The art display on the top floor is fantastic. No wonder it is the most photographed building in the Southern Hemisphere.
S.
Being someone that likes plain and functional, I was dragged along by my wife and was absolutely blown away by the design and architecture of this wonderful building. The mosaic floor of the main concourse would be the envy of the ancient Romans and Christopher Wren would no doubt marvel at the architecture. The stained glass would not be out of place in a Tiffany's catalogue. A wow experience.
C.
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING! Some of the most spectacular architecture I have ever seen. In pristine condition, this building is absolutely magnificent. For the train itself, I went on the Taieri Gorge train trip which was absolutely marvellous. 4 and a half hours of fantastic siteseeing and some very informative information about the area and it’s past. Would highly recommend the train trip and a visit to the train station.
G.
It's a great place. Do check out this railway station. They do have some gallery thing going on on the second level, you can check those out as well. You can book for a train ride along the coast of Dunedin as well. It's something you don't get to see while driving or walking. It's recommended, the scenery is beautiful. Prices vary during summertime and winter, so do check out the prices on their website.
T.
The building looks nice. It's not far from the Octagon. You can do two different tourist train trips. I did both and recommend the Taieri Gorge trip if you can spare the time and money. There is some great landscapes to see outside of Dunedin. After this trip though, the Seasider felt a little bit boring overall. Bring a camera. You can stand on the platforms between the carriages for most of the ride. If you can choose the day, don't do the same mistake that I did: everyone wants to do the trip on a Sunday.
K.
Awesome trip. Even though travelling as cheaply as I can, I am glad I splash out for this. The scenery is amazing as you leave Dunedin and enter the beautiful pine forests and river flowing gorges. You can stand between the carriages and enjoy the view from there. Toilets are onboard as well as reasonably priced snacks and drinks.
J.
Interesting and beautiful old building that guards history and remains as it was build in the old times. Train rides still available, mainly touristic for experience the people a great time and see the beautiful landscape.
B.
One of the fancier buildings in Dunedin. Its located close to the Octagon, just find Stuart street and head down towards the water. The court house and old prison is across the street and it is down the road from the settlers museum.
The gardens in the front is maintained well so its a nice place to sit and relax while you look at the building itself. Both inside and outside of the building is nice. The inside has a lot of the old decor including the old ticketing booths and the stained glass windows at the top. The first floor also houses a sports hall of fame and an arts museum.
There is a ticketing area on the ground floor to do rail tours around the area. The tracks behind the station are still functional. Quite a nice stop for some sightseeing.
P.
Taieri Gorge Railway and was an incredible experience! First few minutes may be annoying because of the city landscapes, but after half an hour, you enter into the native nature and beautiful Taieri river views. Recommended!
E.
We did not go onto the railway but visited the train station in Dunedin as it is touted as a must-see. The exterior of the train station is spectacular. Upon entering, we found the main hall unexpectedly small compared to the grandness of the exterior. The train hall is nicely decorated with mosaic floor and spectacular ornamented ceiling. The museum of New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame is located upstairs at the train station. It is a must-see for people who are into architecture.
B.
If there are no trains there when you do happen to walk inside because from the onset it looks great, then there is really not much to see unless you want to go to the Sports Hall of Fame Museum, I suppose if you booked the scenic rail journey it would be a lot more exciting.
J.
Nice building! They have 2 type of scenic train ride tour - The Seasider about 90 mins and The Taieri George Railway about 4 hrs. Took The Seasider tour, the view was just okay. Since our seat was not at the seaside window, we had to wait until the return trip to enjoy the view (passenger change side before return trip)
F.
May one of the most beautiful railway station in NZ
Elegant classic building with gallery and nice restaurant inside
The big garden in front always looks beautiful and provides a comfortable resting area to visitors.
S.
Even if your not planning on visiting the gorge by train. Make sure you come and visit this site to see the amazing building structure. Bring your camera as you'll definitely get some great pics here.
R.
Beautiful train station, well maintained and clean. Great photo opportunities here. One of the prime places Otago Uni graduates go to for their graduation pictures.
G.
Done the Dunedin - Taieri Gorge - Middlemarch - Return trip. Was a christmas present for my two boys aged 12 & 14 years. They had a ball.
Brilliant trip. Weather turned out brilliant - hot in fact.
Lots of history along the way. Good commentating on the train along the way. Well recommend this trip. Good value for money.
C.
I love railway stations and Dunedin Railway Station does not disappoint. Don't miss the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame $6 and the Otago Art Society gallery (free) upstairs.
K.
Very picturesque railway station.
It was quiet empty when we went and managed to get a few nice photos.
G.
The Dunedin Railway Station is a wonderful example of early 20th century architecture. Inside the mosaic tiled floor is also something to marvel. There is also a wonderfully restored steam locomotive on display under cover adjacent to the railway station.
C.
Spectacular gorge railway running up through taieri. Mix of older and newer stock. Train host was very informative and funny over the PA. good for and drink selection as well. Station itself is a stunning building and is freely open to wander around a bit and out onto platform. Host an art gallery and NZ sports hall of fame.
M.
Great scenic train journeys with an an informative and humorous commentary. See sights you won't see from the road.
The Dunedin station is beautiful, with a grand staircase, mosaics and stained glass.
On the Taieri Gorge trip, you can view the scenery from the open air platforms at the end of the carriages.
Toilets and catering are available on all trains.
M.
Fun day, beautiful views.Lovely volunteers .Served a lovely box lunch and a lot of wine.Hillside flowers we're in bloom.
B.
Great place.. architectural wonder.
Must visit when in Dunedin
P.
Great place to visit with amazing interiors and tile arts, if you have time ; go on a ride on the world class train for 90 minutes discovering the beautiful surroundings.
T.
A place full of history, beautifully standing in the city center. Worth visiting. Now the station is mainly running tourist trains.
J.
I came to the station at night since I didn't have time to visit in the morning, didn't expect the station to be open, but I guess I was half wrong. The station was closed but the door to the back is open. So I went inside and took some good pictures with the "abandoned" trains and was there for some time. Totally beautiful!
W.
It is very beautiful, not only suitable for taking pictures, and feel of New Zealand culture.
這裡是紐西蘭必去的!
S.
Arrived at the wonderful station and caught the tourist trip to Pukerangi through the Taieri Gorge. Some grand scenery and some wonderful engineering with the viaducts and bridges clinging to the side of the gorge.
We were able to park near the station for free because it was the Easter Holiday.
Even if you don't take the rail trip, you must at least visit the station. It is fabulous. There are other trips by rail, along the coast going North and a longer trip going the same way through Pukerangi to Middlemarch. The Middlemarch trip does not operate everyday.
N.
Hope to finish the decoration soon
L.
The gardens aren't as big as depicted in pictures, however the buildings and the rails have been preserved spectacularly.
F.
Amazing building in which you can see the painstaking process the tilers went through to floor this structure and the gothic style building is a sight to behold! Highly recommend going and seeing this place as it is a staple of Dunedin history.
S.
Such a comfortable trip. Guide so well-informed. Obvious that Dunedin is loved by townspeople and visitors alike. Fabulous rail trips at good prices
D.
Small but there is a sports and art museum here too. We got there to late and it was closed.
K.
Beautiful location. Not a lot to do here but good to come to and have a look.
J.
Great train journey in restored carriages. The volunteer staff are very friendly and the views are terrific.
M.
During our recent visit we took the Gorge train and it was a great experience going through the mountains. This is a must try if you visit Dunedin.
D.
Historic railway station in Dunedin, done up in an Italian Rennaisance style. Thousands if mosaic tiles line the floors. Mostly tourist trains from the station today.
J.
Stayed the night at camperpark next to Railway... Great, just take EARPLUGS. easy access to the City facilities. The railway building is a must see . 👍🏽
C.
Awesome building! Very beautiful inside. There has a sport stats museum on 1F. Buy ticket of Railway tours here.
F.
One of the most beautiful train stations I've seen. Gothical architecture with Renaissance elements. Nice facilities.
S.
Dunedin was a much better than expected place to visit. Said to be the Edinburgh of South Island the buildings are magnificent of that 1880 era. This later last railway station built around 1903 is stunning. Passanger travel to christchurst ceased in 2002 but you can still catch the old gorge train twice a day for tourists. Free to look round station and near by transport museum is fascinating.
L.
Relaxing railways tour to capture the lovely gorge views. Price should include snacks as it's not cheap.
T.
Beautiful building to explore, even if you aren’t going to take the tour, you have to stop by here- nothing wrong with free looks!
S.
Wonderful place and a must visit place in Dunedin. The beauty of Scottish architecture is prevalent in this building. The interior decoration of the station is amazing. Also there is art gallery and museum open for public inside the railway station.
L.
Historic building, great art gallery on first floor, clean washrooms. Nice gardens.
M.
Very enchanting old station, cameras going off everywhere, try to take your photos off peak times. Otherwise there photos of people, 😏. The journey was great, amazing landscape through the gorge, and you can stand outside for breathtaking views. Daryl our conductor was very informative, it's the best way of learning about the area's having local's like Daryl telling you about the old and more recent history. Thanks again 👍👍.
W.
It is very beautiful, not only suitable for taking pictures, and feel of New Zealand culture.

Rail History. Amazing place. Plus it has alot more Arts etc to see too if Rail isn't your biggest interest
F.
Amazing building in which you can see the painstaking process the tilers went through to floor this structure and the gothic style building is a sight to behold! Highly recommend going and seeing this place as it is a staple of Dunedin history.
L.

G.
Historic, iconic building. Good to visit if you are staying in Dunedin
C.
Awesome building! Very beautiful inside. There has a sport stats museum on 1F. Buy ticket of Railway tours here.
J.
Must see and do lots of character and history 🌟🌟🌟🌟🎶👍
J.
Double booked seats. Old carriages, some great views
L.
Historic building, great art gallery on first floor, clean washrooms. Nice gardens.
G.
Done the Dunedin - Taieri Gorge - Middlemarch - Return trip. Was a christmas present for my two boys aged 12 & 14 years. They had a ball.
Brilliant trip. Weather turned out brilliant - hot in fact. …
S.
Stunning experience and must travel journey. Amazing landscapes on route.
G.
Enjoyed the Seaside Railcar journey but would have loved if we could have been able to get out at Waitati, where train stops before making the return journey, for a classic photo. Please
H.
The building is so beautiful, not sure why it was closed tho.
J.
There's no rail service operating apart from a trip to a gorge with trains maintained by hobbyists.
The station building is magnificently maintained.
F.
A very nice old station. Especially the mosaics of the tile floor are very special. You can also leave for some very beautiful train trips.
B.
Old fashioned railway. The coastal ride is wonderful. A must
s.
Beautiful train station close to the city centre. It is located right next to a small museum. Very well maintained front yard is great for photo. The historic building is also very well maintained, the painted glass window is beautiful. There's a sports museum inside the train station, located on the upper level.
L.
Beautiful place. Landmark of Dunedin, so no need to introduce too much.
R.
Wonderful Taieri Gorge Railway trip, a must if you visit Dunedin.
A.
Get scenary, friendly staff, good food selection a very fun day
Z.
The coastal ride was breathtaking and doesn't take too long to complete. About 90 minutes and we can see the beautiful landscape all along the way.
D.
Not the most interesting scenery but it's fun to just ride the train. The railway station is very picturesque.
S.
Great place to visit... The glass around the ancient locomotive is pretty reflective at bright day light..
C.
A wonder day out and great value for money. The gorge is wonderful with full commentary!! A trip not to be missed!!
C.
Magnificent old building wish we had more time to explore around there more and catch the train. Amazing architecture.
V.
My son loves trains and all sorts of vehicles so we stopped by while waiting for Toitu Museum to open. He loved looking at the trains. The old railway building is beautiful. We're now planning on booking a train trip with Taieri Gorge Railways
J.
A wonderful experience. The whole family enjoyed themselves so much and the kids didn't want the ride to end. The views were beautiful.
S.
Great experience and spectacular scenery - on a train tour obviously. Station is pretty cool either way though.
T.
There's old steam locomotive and old guy who is volunteer for explaining.
It looks so powerful and beautiful.
A.
Nice railway station possibly the oldest main railway station in the country
J.
Double booked seats. Old carriages, some great views
J.
Went on the father's day train trip to Oamaru and back a lovely day and a great trip great scenery and company.
J.
Unforgettable memories, beautiful scenery. Recommended.
A.
We took Taieri Gorge train. Great views and good food onboard. Check for deals in Bookme.
A.
Really enjoyed our trip to Waitati. Nostalgic for me since I travelled to school by train on that route. Booking was simple and on board staff did a good job. Would use again.
R.
A fun trip and great scenery, good idea for wet weather days
j.
Great architectural details - they don't build them like this anymore.
E.
Great experience we took the 90 m ride really great old fashion in stile really nice
A.
Very beautiful old structure building.
S.
Beautiful old building. There is a sports exhibition upstairs, but I don't think it was worth the extra money.
S.
Could only book for short trip, lovely though
A.
Nice detinations for holidays , visit dunedin rilways stations and many more , dont forget to visit cardbury chocholate factory
m.
,Trains are in great original condition, well displayed , needed more time to soak it in.
K.
Cold wet day when we visited .cafe not open which was extremely disappointing as looking for food .The station itself is well worth a visit stunning building .the tiling is superb and lots of photo opportunities .The art gallery was open with world class exhibition but very few visitors .There may be more on in summer but a little disappointed in lack of food .
S.
Fascinating building, definitely worth going inside, beautiful old stained glass windows and tiles on the floors and walls. They often have exhibitions here upstairs. We went to a lovely local art exhibition, with some artists at work. Great old railway engine outside.
S.
Most photographed train station in the world, not sure why. Hut it looked nice
C.
Beautiful historical railway station, must see.
G.
Really interesting building, one of many in Dunedin to admire.
R.
You must visit if you are in Dunedin. The architecture of the building is sublime inside and out. The Garden in front is also amazing. There are two train trips you can take. The Inlander which will take you through gorges and hills inland and the Seasider which will take you down the coast.
G.
Definitely worth a visit. Especially the Sports Hall of Fame
S.
Beautiful old building with lovely gardens.
F.
Nice old little town remind you that those gold rush days
T.
One of Dunedin's must-see sights. The station is far bigger than is needed for the sight-seeing services that now run from there. As such, parts of the building have been sensibly put to use variously as an art gallery and a sports museum. The whole building is impeccably maintained.
D.
Must visit places while visiting Dunedin. Their are two famous train tours which run daily in morning and afternoon hours. Also the when premise is very beautiful. The garden in front of the building is very beautiful. The weekend farmers market location is just beside this beautiful building.
J.
Nice building with an amazing Hall of Fame museum in it
G.
Jam packed with tourists but it is a beautiful buildings inside and out.
Z.
Historic place but getting a bit too expensive
J.
Cool building, very big. Wish there had been a little more information on the place though
J.
Must see and do lots of character and history 🌟🌟🌟🌟🎶👍
M.
Wonderful historic station.
T.
I think the scenic train is overrated. The view is beautiful but if you can drive long distances, you can easily find similar view a long the road. There are scenes that you can’t view by car but also there are view that you can’t view by train. Personally, if you already take road trip in new zealand, you don’t need to take this train.
Note: Food is allowed on the train. There are outdoor space on train that you can take photos without windows glasses.
J.
It looks very good - sadly it was closed !
M.
The Dunedin Railway Station is such an amazing place and definitely worth a visit next time your in Dunedin. It is such a beautiful place and also has the Sports Hall of Fame which is an awesome mini museum featuring lots of NZ Sports-stars.
a.
Nice place. Just run around it. Feels magnificent and gorgeous.
A.
Lovely old station building, and a great train trip through the Taieri Gorge, highly recommended
D.
Fun trip. Beautiful country especially in December.
F.
Beautiful building worth seeing for it's masonary and tile work.
J.
Taieri Gorge train trip. Excellent commentary.
B.
Great building. Classic railways feel. Free access to the building and platform. The museum and gallery were closed when we got there which was after 4 but before 5. A bit disappointed really. Not much open in Dunedin on a Sunday!! If you like trains worth a visit. Can book some trips on trains to but didn't seem to have much action
許.
It will be better to have more space open
B.
What a beautiful building...I was on a friend we docked at Dunedin, so a group of us did one of the train trips, and received great service. The actual Station is an amazingly beautiful building, as is many of the towns buildings. ..and that what I love about Dunedin...kitsch uniquely beautiful and well worth visiting👍🙂 I will be back 👍❤
A.
It is a truly beautiful building. Fun fact is that it is the most photographed building in New Zealand. But because the tour buses park right in front of it I had to wait for over an hour to get a semi-uncluttered photo of the thing. Seriously who puts a bus park right in front of something that everyone wants to take a photo of?!
T.
Nice experience riding the rail way. Gave a great view of the countryside. The staff are friendly. The ride was about 50 minutes. The town that we arrived in, was very quiet in need as well. Lots of shops, and restaurants. The rail station there is right in the heart of downtown. Definitely a good way to spend the day.
W.
Dunedin Railway Station is my old work place when I was with New Zealand Railways.
B.
My second time to be here. A historical place to be visited.
R.
If you want to see the beauty of Dunedin. Start here. I could admire this building all day and still be equally in awe of it at night. From watching the trains, to partaking in the farmers market on a Saturday morning. Dunedin railway station is imperative to visit. Take a walk over the bridge, get a view of the station from all angles. Get inside the station and study all the architecture.
A.
This place is one of the key iconic Dunedin attractions. It has old world charm and elegance. There is a farmers market in the car park (on either Saturday or Sunday mornings)
There are a couple of shorter tourist train journeys available from here.
M.
Sea side tour was pretty average. We had to wait at the other end for more than an hour for another train to go past and they didn't have any food the warmer. The scenery itself was breathtaking.
D.
Fantastic architecture, interesting rail view trips
C.
Well groomed garden. Great spot to take photos.
T.
An absolute must when you are visiting Dunedin or even if you live there. Be it the trip to Middlemarch or one of the shorter journeys.
D.
The Seasider train was magnificent. Coastal views and the train hanging along the cliffs was scenic. The Taieri Gorge train was very nice, heritage-like and the rock cliff things along the way were cool.
I.
Lengthy delay before setting off meant we lost out on the chance to eat outside later in the day. Train ride was good with some great views but as the train was full and seats were allocated before boarding we only got the view from our seats of the same side of the track going and coming back. I would have liked it better had there been a reverse view for the return section.
G.
A stunning piece of architectural design and history for the city but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to get used as much as it should for an array of different types of things that it could be used for but it is a quality Dunedin attraction.
R.
A wonderful day out each year for which you must book well in advance as very popular! It was a lovely journey, the company was great, enjoyed the sausage sizzle too. It was a bonus with the golden autumn colours still about so extremely secenic all round. It took about one and a half hours before getting off the train to walk and same on the way back. We left Dunedin at 8.45 and got back arounf 4.00pm. Our rail walk took just over the hour on the day, so was shorter than expected, but we could enjoy the scenery and be relaxed-so no rush.
A.
Really beautiful building, Dalton mosaic tiles, dating 1906. The art gallery showcased local artists. The NZ sports hall of fame was worth the $6 entry fee. The outside gardens, with the pretty boxus hedging were nice and lots of visitors were milling about, quite a popular tourist destination when we visited. A really nice space all round. Cool place to visit.
I.
One of the most beautiful railway stations I've ever seen! It is truly a masterpiece. Go to the 2nd floor and you will see the tiled floor in all its beauty (just wait until crowds pass). Take your time and sit outside to admire the station - there's nice flower bed just in front of the entrance, a perfect combination for your photos. Just next door is a display of historic steam train, take a look at it as well.
R.
Loved this train trip. Great views and commentary. Only problem was when you are on left side leaving Dunedin you do not get a good view of gorge. On the way back I stood on a platform between carriages to get pictures. The train does not turn around so you stay on the same side.
P.
Duneden Railway station is an experience itself. It’s a one of the city’s most prominent architectural landmarks, taking pride of place in the central city. Go inside, buy tickets for the Railway trip which is about a 4 1/2 hour round-trip ride into the mountains, with a stop at Pukerance for maybe 5 to 10 minutes. The scenery is gorgeous, there’s a car on board where you can get something to eat and drink, including beer and wine. It’s a very enjoyable experience.
L.
We took the Seasider in the morning and the Taipei Gorge train tour in the afternoon. Lovely way to see the sites along the coast and the trek through the mountains. Beautiful vistas with live commentary explaining various points of interest. Our one request would be to incorporate a system where passengers can have their questions answered. Along the way, the commentary was interesting, but we had many questions that would have been nice to have answered.
J.
Did the Taireri train amzing scenery & great comentary
B.
Confusing about whether passenger trains run from here not. Beautifully restored and maintained railway station. Please get the Tiare gorge railway trip going again soon.
D.
Brilliant station architecture. Worth a visit.
Y.
A place you have to go in Dunedin!
J.
Fantastic trip. The sights are awesome. Thoroughly recommended. The biggest issue was choosing what side to sit on as there were numerous sights to see on both. The commentry was good, occasionally funny. One young boy told me he thought it was going to be boring but he was having a great time and I had to agree.
S.
Dunedin Railway Station is a wonderful place to visit. It's architecture includes beautiful mosaics and embellishments. It is one out of 200 of the most photographed buildings in the world. Well worth a visit. You may even see Steampunks or Victorians there.
A.

Amazing views but was a very long trip. We went for four hours and that was more than enough. Once you have gone one way you can't wait to get back. There was only so many photos of the scenery you could take.
Not a bad price for 2 $125.00 for us both.
P.
A slow start scenery wise on our trip from Dunedin to Pukerangi but once you get into the gorge proper all that changes and the views are spectacular. Nice informative commentry from on board guide and a buffet car is available for drinks & snacks. All in all a good 4+ hours.
M.
The building is well worth a look. You can get some great photos you just have to be patient with buses parked in front of the station. Panoramic camera gives great garden photo
C.
Great fun to do train trip.
D.
Taieri Gorge Railway journey is definitely worthwhile doing. The scenery inside the gorge is absolutely stunning! Try and get a seat on the right side of the train as that gives the best views, but you can always go out to the platforms between the carriages. The only negatives are that it's quite a long journey in an older carriage, plus you don't get to hop of the train at the end of that line.We also had the staff pile a whole heap of stinky rubbish in the carriage near our seat (on the return leg), which was quite ordinary. Still a nice day out to watch some lovely scenery go by. Highly recommended.
P.
We enjoyed the relaxing two hour trip through the countryside and along the coasts, especially when the temp dropped into the 40s, Farenheit, and we were looking for tourist opps. But to be honest, it IS a train ride, so when there are photo opps most are quick and soon obscured through railside vegetation. And tunnels. But there are some glorious vistas of beaches, marshes, and passing villages. And also with a dining car with drinks and snacks, sandwiches, etc. But overall, a lovely experience.

Beautiful historic place
K.
A lovely old building, floor tiles appear to be original and worn, which adds to the charm. There's a Cobb and Co restaurant, a small souvenir shop/tourist service and a sports hall of fame (modest entry charge of $6 per adult). Looks like they also offer the Taieri Gorge rail trip from there. If you are in a hurry and just want to look around and take a few photos, 15 mins will be enough. Of course, you can spend a lot more time there. It's nice to see what a grand rail station might have looked like in the old days.
S.
Beautiful building to see and great trip to Tarlerie Gorge
J.
The train ride was great! I loved going near the cliffs because it made me feel like I was about to fall off and break my legs, arms, neck, and spine and die immediately on impact! Very exciting time!
4/5 Stars - James P. Miller
R.
Fabulous 4 hour round trip to the scenic Taieri Gorge in wonderfully restored coaches. The commentary was informative but not intrusive. Loved being able to go outside on the viewing platform that each heritage coach has. We ordered the lunch box and it was tasty and filling though other hot options on board also looked good.
C.
I arrived at the station around sunset, just in time to see the building being lighted up. The station was still open so I could go in to see the beautiful interior and take a stroll along the platform. There were very few visitors at the time when I visited, and I managed to take many photos without anyone inside.
C.
Amazing architecture. The front of the railway station is usually crowded with lots of tour buses and tourists, making it difficult to get a good photo. Come before 9am or after 5pm to get a good shot.
A.
Beautiful old building, with a surprising amount inside to do.
Contains a small art gallery with giftshop - looks like a lot of amateur submitted work, but this just creates a wonderful collage of local artists and their many interpretations of New Zealand's landscapes and animals.
There's also the sports museum, with memorabilia from the last 100 years. Large focus on athletics and rugby, but plenty of other sports and events
It's also a train station
D.
Fantastic building with a it of history attached
J.
Beautiful building! Such a SHAME to let ROWS OF Big TOUR BUSSES PARK RIGHT IN FRONT, blocking amazing entrance architecture. Drop off and move policy would be an idea.
h.
Went on the Taieri Gorge trip, scenery was great, commentary was great, staff were great except the buffet car staff member sadly. Rather than serving adults who had been queuing for a while, she chose to serve children whenever they appeared. Not great PR when you've been waiting in line.
M.
Beautifully intact Victorian rail station, really enjoyed the tile mosaics and original reliefs. Nice and quiet spot, easy to snap uncluttered pictures of all the sites.
A.
The staff, booking process and pre information/advice were all really good. I would recommend this journey!
D.
Great Southern Train Tour stopped there.
Pity Taieri Gorge Train Trust was not working, as a link in.
B.
The railway is beautiful from the outside but also from the inside as it possesses an art gallery. If you're there the week end (mostly sunday) there is usually a market right next to the building. The building is one of the Must-Dos of Dunedin.
S.
Nice trains, friendly staff. Views are good, but lot of trees blockin them. You see more from a car, but nice option for sightseeing anyway. And the driver can relax too.
Q.
The excursion was extremely well run by volunteers. They made the trip very memorable with humour, information, and service. The volunteers made us feel very welcome. Glasses of water came immediately, and pamphlets and maps were distributed. A glass of fabulous local Pinot Noir arrived mid morning and several top ups ensued! We arrived at the summit to find a lovely local market with tourist stuff to purchase. On the return journey, we were given a delightful lunch box which was yummy (and more pinot!). Tourist items were sold on the train via a trolley pushed by more volunteers. The train stopped at Dunedin station to allow us to wander through and take photos. The whole day was fabulous. The volunteers were excellent.
S.
Fantastic day, excellent value. We were looked after brilliantly by Kaye and Paul, who couldn't do enough for us, what a wonderful couple.
We met and made, new friends and had a day filled with fun and laughter, not to mention the amazing scenery.
Love New Zealand, would recommend everyone everyone come here.
R.
Beautiful old train station. The staff there were friend and it was a quick process to collect our tickets. I have been on both Taieri Gorge and Seasider and would highly recommend both.
A.
Very well organised and with good interiors. One might spend sometime just moving around in the station and without embarking on any train journey. Of course, train journey would more exciting what with scenic surroundings along the track.
T.
The Otago art society had an amazing variety of art on show here with free demos by artists. Building and tiles well worth a look too
F.
Beautifully restored working station. Must see if in Dunedin
G.
Beautiful historic railway station.
B.
Train was on time and plenty of places. Drinkes rolled in and the staff Even dressed up for the occasion.
Sights were pointed out by the team and the speakers were loud and clear.
Almost cars were dated but fitted the theme of the railway line.
All good and well Worth going out for a look.
l.
Brilliant to visit the tiled railway station and amazing iron work, loved the ambiance and great that art exhibition there too adds a great dimension.
L.
Lovely autumn afternoon seeing Otago countryside. Passive experience, excellent for tourists with sore feet, or people who have difficulty walking. I enjoyed the afternoon very much but it was decidedly not a thrill-fest.
M.
Lovely station. Trip was ok, nothing special after the rest of the travelling previously.
R.
Good skate park behind the railway station. I never actually visit here but parking in the car park to walk over the bridge to the skate park. I'd give the park 3 stars. It's good but small and really close to a busy road.not good for young kids.
P.
The station is beautiful. There was a market on Saturday when we caught the train in March. Spectacular trip along the Gorge with a variety of impressive scenery. All the best to those affected by the floods.
K.
Beautiful place. They have a tourist train which takes you to beautiful locations in and around Dunedin. This train shall bring you back to Dunedin, if the travellor wants to. Please plan your travel by this train in advance.
S.
Very small inside with a great little art museum
R.
Great train ride - Very relaxing. Just make sure they are departing from Dunedin station. We didn't due to track work and had a council bus ride for a 5 star experience.
M.
A bit of early NZ History just there. Beautiful stained glass windows too indoors. The bridge you take over multi train tacks displays some examples of early railcar services. Brilliant!!!
y.
Do spend some time while in Dunedin. There are few rides daily to see the scenery or u can book to have a delighted meal in a train. Aka. Train restaurant.
Log on to their website to find out more on the timing and price.
L.
I was lucky to visit in a Saturday when there otago Farmers markets were on. Great atmosphere, beautiful architecture.
The only thing to watch out for are the hundreds of bloody selfie sticks with a certain type of tourist.
M.
Great station!
M.
Lovely old train, though "viewing platform" was non-existent on our trip. Travels through several ecosystems and over trestles and through tunnels. See birds and other wildlife. Two brief stops where you can disembark.
B.
Beautiful old station.
N.
Lovely spot to take some photos!
P.
Nice cozy old station. They also have an old train wagon you can ride and take pictures in. The inside where the ticket offices were can be visited too and you can climb up the stairs for an upper view down to the floor mosaic
E.
Even if you're not catching the train, hit this place up for the amazing architecture, interior tiling and decoration and the very neat flower gardens out front. Must-see stop if you're doing your own walking tour of Dunedin.
G.
Going on a small 2 hour train tour of the coastal bay to Waitati was a great way to spend a day out. Lots of history along the way with the conductor(I think) giving us the lowdown on everything. Definitely worth it! It reminds me a little of Monkey Island further south on the island.
S.
Right fron the get go this train trip was fab. The staff so helpful, happily rearranged seating so our group could sit together - we perchased tkts separately.
All you can read about incredible scenery is true. We had a lovely market with a vareity of stalls to spend some time while the train prepared forthe return.
L.
We did the Waititi Seasider ride - recommended if you just want a taste of the coastal train ride. It's just about 2-hours, so it's enough just to experience. The scenery up the coast is beautiful. Once interesting thing is that the seats rotate 180 degrees. That way, if you're assigned to one side, you'll end up switching sides once you reach Waititi, and you won't feel screwed. Everyone gets the chance to take a picture of the water!
M.
Wondrous trip from Middlemarch to Dunedin, this is a must-do even for non-train enthusiasts.
M.
Great 2 hour trip up the gorge - and 2 hours back or by coach. We had optional packed lunch which was very nice. Scenery spectacular.
J.
I love the fact the clock tower has only 3 faces. The Scots thought it a waste to have a clock looking out to sea. Inside always spectacular to admire
J.
My husband and I rode on the Taieri Gorge Railway which covered Taieri to Pukerangi starting at the gorgeous Dunedin train station. Most of the carriages are original with the buffet car being new but it did have some very important items needed for the 2 hour each way journey!
The scenery is spectacular and the train slows enough for good photo ops and does have a couple of stops. You can use the viewing platforms outside as it goes which was fun and refreshing on a hot day. It is reasonably smooth going which meant good wine wasn't sacrificed.
The train manager recited a historically thorough and at times comical commentary during the trip adding to the enjoyment of the day and looked after us all brilliantly!!
Highly recommend for all ages.
B.
It is reported that this is one of the most photographed train stations in the world and if you come and see it, you will see why. If you want photos of the station without too many people in your photo, try to get a day that there isn't a cruise ship in town.
T.
Tidy old world historical place that has nice updated features and cool district train rides that allow booze to be taken on board.nice glass of wine while viewing the passing scenery. .cool runnings
C.
Actually it’s the quiet railway station.
D.
John was the guide on the Taieri Gorge train we went on last weekend. I would like to commend him, as his commentary throughout this 4 .5 hour return journey was very informative, interesting and at times comical. He has a wealth of knowledge in the Otago region and clear, deep voice - A pleasure to listen to.
l.
Nice trip to do in Dunedin
T.
You can visit on your own. Booked a train ride once got there last minute. They ket you bring outside food. They also sell snacks and drinks in the train. Enjoyed the train ride.
P.
Nice trip, good weather. Bit long and views not as good as we had hoped. Seats don't have a lot of leg room, tall people might find it cramped
B.
Great place to start a train ride.
R.
Josh was very helpful. I'd called in to check out car parking for tomorrow's journey on the Taeri Gorge journey.
He talked me through the options for our 7m+ RV and offered suggestions. Thank you, Josh.
J.
Beautiful train station. You can still book trips here. There's an old restored steam train on display next to the train station. The upper floor features exhibits.
W.
Beautiful buildings!
L.
First time I had visited this building. Very impressed, absolutely beautiful. Well worth a visit if going down Dunedin.
B.
Awesome train ride off about 45 minutes along the coast
J.
We were here for just 20 minutes as we were passing through from a railway excursion, but this is well worth seeing this iconic New Zealand building. It is still a working railway station with plenty of visitors stopping by take pictures or even traveling by train to other destinations near Dunedin.
There is free wifi so you can immediatly upload the pictures you will have taken during this visit. There are, of course, restrooms and a small restaurant available onsite.
A.
Such a splendid example for grand building from the bygone era. Since the chocolate factory was moved to OZ, IMHO, this is the most beautiful building in Dunedin
P.
Outstanding railway journey reminiscent in places of Colorado Durango & Silverton from a scenic perspective. Really friendly train crew did an awesome job of explaining the trip. Being able to get outside for photos and videos was outstanding.
B.
Great way to see the country side.
G.
Did the coastal trip a great little ride
Z.
Spectacular looking railway station with beautifully maintained gardens. Definitely recommend checking this place out
H.
Very nice place!
T.
Nice architecture and well maintained. Some good photo opportunities inside with the mosaics. Go up the stairs to take a picture from above.
J.
World class tourist railway with vintage carriages and excellent Kiwi service. Whether it's the stunning Taieri Gorge trip or the coastal excursion, put this on your must-do list when you're in Dunedin.
L.
Very cool building with tons of photo opportunities. We're stretched for time but would love to come visit again. 😁
M.
Lovely station, no trains...😦
D.
Dunedin railways is one of those old train, it was since 1274. You can experience your trip from here to another beautiful places in new zealand by ride the train. Go and visit here if you have a chance.
C.
Sports museum great place to visit at station
T.
Historic and a cool place. A must--see.
P.
Beautiful historic building
m.
Dunedin station. Is a grand looking building. The booking of our trip on Taipei gorge railway was great . The trip was wonderful views. Well worth the money
R.
They say this is the most photographed building in New Zealand. It has a nice mosaic floor on the inside and on the outside you've got a good view of the law court building. It has a flemish renaissance style feel to it. I like the basalt and the Oamaru stone mix. The arches seem to be made of pink granite and the terracotta tiles were brought over here from Marsielles.
Here you can take a photo, organise a train along the Taieri gorge railway or go to the farmers market in the car park every Saturday morning.
S.
Nice to look around at this historical center. Great art gallery inside as well as a sports museum. Beautiful building.
S.
Lovely building, only one train running out however! Would have loved to see this building in prime operation. It is fast asleep now.
N.
A great way to spend a few hours. We took the Taieri Gorge trip, 4 hours return to Pukerangi. The train was comfortable, and the scenery was great as well as the informative commentary from the train tour guide.
R.
It's nice to see the old Railway Station & imagine what it was like back in the hay day of rail. It has a very good art gallery & a sports memorabilia section.
K.
Just loved it all the ride the scenery and the service...great way to relax
M.
Would say it's the most beautiful railway station I've ever been to.
M.
Very interesting place snd good in shape since then
K.
The Taieri Gorge Railway trip is wonderful! The Pacific Coast trip from Dunedin is good, but too short. I guess that we got spoiled by those longer train rides through spectacular scenery - we took all of New Zealand's regularly scheduled scenic train rides (Great Journeys) first and the Pacific Coast Dunedin ride last. We might have liked it more if we had taken that one first!
L.
Beautiful architecture in and out! Like stepping back in time but with updated services. Nice cafe.
F.
A unique building with lots of history.
K.
Nice historical building in dunedin
W.
A place should be visited while in Dunedin
R.
One of the most photographed buildings in New Zealand and an absolute must do visit in Dunedin. Inside the entry hall the mosaic tile and figurines are top class.
A.
Stunning and picturesque place. One of the few places you should put in your bucket list if you ever plan to visit Dunedin.
H.
Beautiful scenery. Plenty of photo opportunities. Time to get off the train in various places. Excellent commentary.
T.
Lovely old building, great place to do rail trips. We enjoyed our trip along the Taieri Gorge, beautiful views.
m.
Great building one of the most photographed buildings in the southern hemisphere. dissapointing the council allows busses and cars to park in front of it
J.
Friendly staff, but the scenery here just can't compare with that in the West coast. I would say if you've got the time and money, go for it. If you're on a tight budget or schedule, the trip doesn't pay off.
y.
Beautiful building with lots of intricate details. Amazing architecture. Such a good place for photo or Instagram.
C.
Interesting, didn't realize that Dunedin owned their own railway. When NZR were going to close the railway Dunedin purchased it all within their boundaries. Good to travel on.
N.
We did the Taieri Gorge trip to Pukerangi. A good trip through some superb scenery in old fashioned carriages. On board catering good and reasonably priced. A trip for train buffs and scenery addicts.
C.
Was an amazing journey, along an engineering marvel with incredible views. We enjoyed Daryl' s commentary too!
B.
Fun afternoon to see some magnificent NZ views!
o.
A historical place where time can be felt. Artnovo design. With galleries on the top floor. One for changing exhibitions and the other for the New Zealand Hall of Fame. And of course you can go to several places in New Zealand by train
M.
Very nice trip
J.
Best train trip ever. The service was fantastic, the food never stopped coming and was great, the scenic views were absolutely beautiful. Would recommend this trip to anyone. It was just amazing.

A.

S.
Yet to explore the train ride. But seems beautiful
K.
In deed very British and the floor of the station is magnificent
Z.
It is a very history landmark for Dunedin and they showcase some of New Zealand's Best scenic railway journeys. At the nearby Dunedin Railway Station North carpark, The Otago Farmer's Market Trust also operates the Otago Farmers Market which sell regional foods and produces to the public in a fun atmosphere. The market runs from7.30 am to12.30pm every Saturday.
S.

L.
Station is really great and the train trips are a nice way to experience Otago. Especially for those who can't walk long distances or on a rainy day
G.
Nice venue of history, good gift shop and mid term parking at each end of the station.
S.
Our seaside journey time was 35 minutes behind schedule on a 2 hour timescale so the journey was rushed, with no time for photos. Spoilt the trip for me.
C.
Amazing place!
