Great museum wish I could have stayed longer very cool solution to steep hills

Well, I had my arm twisted to visit this place today (I had no intention of going), and it ended up really interesting. The guy who showed us around's enthusiasm was infectious, and I learned a lot. Congratulations to all the people who put it together. That guy Fell was a genius.

Life size exhibits of both fell engine and a brake / guard's van on display allowing you to see how the extra braking as well as the extra wheels that grip the centre rail. Loco 199 served on the Rimatuka Incline from 1878 until the line closed in 1955 when the tunnel deviation was opened. Many displays to illustrate the working life and equipment of this unique line in the world. Also many stories describing the social history both from the railwaymen as well as their women folk who lived alongside this railway. How to manage your washing on the line to avoid locomotive smoke! Or preparing to defend her children when Japanese prisoners of war were taken over the line to the POW Camp in Featherston. Well worth its admission for entry.

Exactly the kind of place that you should stumble across in small, slightly off the beaten track towns everywhere. Esoteric, one topic museum that's so niche it needs a less broad term to describe it, hugely interesting, really well laid out with loads of great things and enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff. Brilliant. Pretend you haven't read this review and just wander in randomly.

Highly recommended to stop in and visit $6 an adult, the train is impressive. Cold water is for sale and they have a shop with all things relating to trains. Staff are fantastic, thanks to the volunteers who run this place. You rock

We visited the museum to kill a bit of time but actually really enjoyed the experience and got a lot out of it. They weren't actually officially open as we were there on a Friday and the normal opening days are Saturdays and Sundays, so it was wonderful for them to open up to is and a couple of other small groups as well. A really interesting place chocka full of history and uniqueness, the film was fascinating and the photographic study was really incredible too. Glad I had a warm jacket on as it was freezing inside and from the looks of it would swelter in summer. Worth a stop and look around if you have the time, a lot of effort, history and knowledge to be gained by exploring the Fell Engine Museum.

Pretty cool place to stop and have a wander around. - didn't particularly like being followed around by the gentleman there, was nice to be told about the history of everything but we felt rushed , particularly as we had a toddler with us. I'd go back, but hope to be left to walk around ourselves 😊

This place is wonderful. Really interesting displays on the history of the fell engine railway line in use in NZ. The best part was the extremely knowledgeable guide. The actual fell engine and braking railway carriage, and the historic film footage and other artefacts made our visit here a real highlight of our Wairarapa holiday.

Well worth a 40 minute stop. Start with the excellent 20-minute documentary and then browse the galleries and the historic train. Little kids with an interest in trains will love this museum. Adults will find it interesting. Older kids may be a bit bored by the old-fashioned presentation of history and technology.

Amazing piece of history absolutely unique to New Zealand. Beautifully restored artifacts including a whole locomotive, fantastic models and an audio visual presentation of what the incline was like. It's really awesome.

So many things to see! The friendly staff put on the 1940 movie, which is great. Heaps of memorabilia, and the Fell locomotive and break car are in great condition. Well worth a visit.

Very interesting museum. Takes you back to a different era and really brings home the importance and challenges of the folks who worked and kept these Fell Engines going over the range. Once you drive from Featherston to Wellington, you will get a new sense of awe for the machines and crews that traversed the range on the rail line.

Its a wonderful museum, a must visit for all visitors, see the film in the museum on the Fell Engine. To think this old now restored Fell Engine sat in the Childrens Playground for years, until they realised its value, beautifully restored in the Museum. I bought a lovely postcard on trademe the other month of this very train, and donated it to the Museum, they didnt have one like it, so was pleased its gone to a good home, it was in colour as well, the Fell Engine coming up the tracks, could have been around Siberia area of Rimutaka Incline (Remutaka as the old/new spelling is!) Dont leave town until you have seen the museums!!!
