Pretty cool museum with interesting stuff and Lizards. The Art the had on this ray was just impressive. The museum itself quite modern and good infos. And its just a donation. So pretty good value especially on a rainy day. :)

There is so much cool stuff to look at! Great fun for familys

This is an awesome place to check out and they have interesting displays.

Great little museum with many fascinating Maori artifacts.

I love my local Museum. The temporary exhibitions are always well worth dropping by to check out. Make some time in your lunch hour or on the way home. I especially love some of the quirkier displays.
All is not perfect though. The building, is now out of time and out of place. Time to rip of the roof and build a structure that wont be limited in space by the terrible pyramid design. Get some of those items out of storage and up on display where they are meant to be.
The building design was very cutting edge and impressive when first built but it has not aged well. Minerva is very lucky to have her back to the museum. Imagine how stunning she would look in front of a tall graceful building that blended with the magnificent Queens Park.
The staff are great and the museum is a great place to take your children.
We are very lucky to have such free easy access to the Tuatara and these displays.

Great place and the kids loved it. It's a shame that we didn't get to see Henry as we came in not long after it opened and it was too cold for him to come out of cover. If you wish to see Henry and his friends in winter, it's best to come in around lunch time or later.
C.
Amazing place full of history and some great views of the gardens as well

This is a small museum but it has a little of everything. WW1 display, art for sale, Maori artefacts, geography, a live breading program for some lizards and also a popular cafe. It is free to enter. Well worth a visit.
L.
Wow! Absolutely creative way of presenting knowledge! Stunning exhibitions and nice rooms of many different types with interactive ways to learn. I did a free experience in Virtual Reality Glasses in 1WW. They do a very good job!

(Pretty good museum and well located.) The Museum was closed on 19 April 2018 by the ICC at a special meeting due to it being an earthquake risk. Currently there are no plans for any of the museums collection/s being displayed anywhere else.

We didn’t have a lot of time to spend here, we get get to see the Tuatara exhibit which was well maintained. Free entry, a local iSite and cafe all on site. Wish we had more time to spend here.
C.
Yeah its a cool place, worth seeing! The reason for only 3 stars is that i wish they updated it more, changed it round ect. Gets a bit boring after a while. Its still got the same things in there since I was a kid.
T.
So much to see and do. Great for all ages and families. Good cafe awesome shop and very friendly and caring staff. Wonderful place to go for the school holidays.
P.
We spend an interesting afternoon in the museum. Good explanations and various artefacts to understand the history of the Southland (Maoris' history, 19th century, scientific explorations, contemporary art...).And it’s free so no reason to visit it !
A.
Worth visiting again and again. The fixed exhibitions on the Sub-Antarctic Islands are particularly interesting. There are many different displays from Victoriana to Maori culture and artefacts, from Southland Local Heritage to The Fastest Indian Motorcycle.
Henry the Tuatara is worth seeing. The museum's Tuatara breeding program is very successful.
Art exhibitions change regularly and are displayed in a light and spacious environment.
The ANZAC display has been very popular locally as it is incorporated into a trench scene.
Stop at the café when you need a break. The food is very good value.
Did I mention that it is all free!

This museum is truly a diamond in the rough. Not to say that Invercargill isn't cool--but the Southland Museum is just that much better. Easily one of the coolest and best-kept museums I've ever been to, and I've been to a few museums. Rich in natural, anthropological, biological, and geological history, this museum and art gallery is probably in my top five all-time favorites simply for how clean, friendly, detailed, and welcoming it is. The tuataras are a must-see as well!
