Reviews of Hakarimata Rail Trail & Walkway
J.
A nice tranquil walk through a trail and bush, surrounded by birds. There are toilets a half hour walk from start but bring hand sanitizer as bow place to wash hands. A pleasant place to bring the family to see the cascade falls and have a picnic on the tables provided. There is a bike rack to secure your bike as no bikes on hiking track to the summit.

The start of the trails follows the old Glen Massey railway line and runs for about 1.5 km. At the end of this bit is a picnic area and toilet. The rail walk is flat and mostly gravel or grass. Easy to bike and there is a bike stand at the picnic area. After the picnic area the old rail line is overgrown and not accessible, but when it was active is use to run through to into Glen Massey, however was closed in 1954. There has been some talk about extending the trail further along the old railway but as of Sep 2020 there's been no further progress.
From the picnic area the trail stops following the old railway line and starts heading up to the the ridgeline of the Hakarimatas.
A little way along you'll find Cascade waterfall. You can climb up some of the waterfall to another few waterfall steps up the river.
If you continue up to the ridge it'll take about 2 hours along the Hakarimata ridgeline to the summit. A warning though, this is a tough walk with a lot of stair climbing. If you're not fit, or an experienced hiker I wouldn't recommend it.

Awesome! Went with a friend for a run, I ran end to end both ways and loved it. But its not for the faint hearted if you do the northern end. I would call it a reasonably "technical" track..! 😊

We did the southern loop of Hakarimata Track. After a flat beginning (the Rail Trail) you get to climb lots of stairs. The track goes up and down the hills several times before one reaches the lookout and before you get the chance to head back to Ngaruawahia (Brownlee Ave). Only few parts of the challenging track are directly in the sun. We really liked it although best view is at the tower.

9/10 experience. I’m an 5 ft 11, 155 kg women who climbed the haks. I clearly ain’t fit at all & I didn’t expect to finish this walk but I did after 50 water breaks, 100 rest stops, almost bursting into tears 7 times.... I completed the walk within 1.5hours. I looked back many times contemplating if I should go back down cause I’m so tired but I had climbed so far to do that so I kept pushing forward...Definitely a tough walk but it’s so worth it ! I am not an experienced hiker nor am I a fit person but my determination to completing the hike is what got me to the top. Was just in time for the sunset & it made it 100x worth it . These reviews are bias & I am a clear example that you don’t have to be the fittest person to do this walk! Afterwards give yourself a rest because your muscles will be sore but continue to do light workouts at home or at the gym.

Love it here, peaceful walk and love the waterfall. The walk to the swimming hole is flat track all the way apart from a few steps at the bush part. I take my double mountain buggy on this walk and have plenty of room for it :). At the start there is loose metal for about the first 10 min of the walk so it would be hard for a small wheeled pram/stroller to push through you'd have to carry it, otherwise it's all easy track rest of the way.

A fairly steep walk with plenty of steps. We saw quite a few runners in both directions.

The walk initially follows the the old Glen Massey rail line for 1.5 Km. At the end of this part of the walk is a picnic area and basic DOC toilets. The rail line used to continue all the way into Glen Massey but closed in 1954. At this point the walk leaves the rail line and continues up the ridge of the Hakarimata’s.
If you continue a little further you'll reach Cascade Waterfall. A nice distraction for the kids to explore. The walk after this point heads up in to the Hakarimata range following the ridge line to the summit, advertised time from here is 2 hours.
The rail walk is all flat mostly gravel or grass. Bikes are allowed on the rail section, there's even a bike stand at the picnic area. No bikes beyond this point though.
Beyond the walk the old rail line is overgrown and not accessible. Originally carrying coal from local mines and some passenger services. There were plans to extend the walk further and continue to follow the rail line.

If you want to blow out the cobwebs and get the heart rate up, you have to try this. The view at the top is worth it. Magnificent

Nice family stroll up to the small waterfall. Access is great for people less able to go and enjoy the outdoors.
