Our family had a fantastic farm & beach ride with the team from Hack n Stay. The path through the farm to the beach gave us a great chance to get to know our horses while taking in the amazing scenery - the backdrop at the beach is stunning. The horses looked really well looked after, and were very easy for those of us with little riding experience to get moving (mostly where we wanted them to go..!). It's nice to support a team that obviously really care for their horses. The guides were very friendly and knowledgeable - we will definitely be back for another ride in future (and maybe even an overnight stay). Thanks.

We loved camping at Hack n’ Stay - the owners and staff were so accommodating, the facilities are great (free hot showers - perfect after a days climb or ride), the area is spacious. Unlike a lot of camping nearby you really feel like you’re in nature not in a tent city. It’s rustic farmhouse vibes remind you what getting out of the city is all about. The property has its own beach walk, glow worms and lake as wellas some gorgeous views. It’s central Golden Bay location allowed us to explore the region easily. We will absolutely be back.

Barbel's deep passion for horses and her compelling ability to teach natural horsemanship guarantees more than just a horse ride. She really cares that you enjoy your ride and she makes it stimulating whatever your level. Camp facilities are some of the best we've seen enhanced with quirky designs and fun details that reflect the relaxed atmosphere at the site. Highly recommend for the scenery, the campsite, the horses and the energy.

Stayed here for two nights in a campervan and did a horse ride with a family of four. We had a blast. The campground was nice and cozy and had all amenities we needed closeby. It is a small campground so it's nice and quiet. Friendly staff as well.
The horse ride was our introduction to horse riding and we had a great time. It was harder than expected, don't expect to just sit back and relax, horse riding is hard work. But this way you really learn to ride a horse.
Highly recommended if you're in the area.

Some friends and I stayed in the farm house for a couple of nights. It was a warm, lovely and kooky place and we loved it. The beds were comfortable and there was plenty to do on foot - walk to the beach, glow worms, swings, hammocks. We didn’t do the horse hack but I there seem to enjoy it. Would definitely recommend for affordable accomodation in a great atmosphere.

What a wonderful afternoon spent with Barbel and her wonderful horses Chloe and Manuka!
I decided to do the Patons Beach ride as this was the second time sitting on a horse and the first time was about 26 years ago. Barbel literally taught me the basic riding skills and she was pacient and didn't mind guiding me and correcting me during the ride. I felt safe and confident riding Chloe - she is a wonderful mere. I learned more about horses in the 2,5 hours than in my whole life so far. The track we went on was very colorful, native bush, cool and funny signs and the beach at low tide was pretty cool as well.
The farm is so quirky and wonderful that I wish I could have stayed the night in the camp and spent more time around the team and animals.
Highly recommended!!!!

We truly enjoyed staying at Hack'n Stay in Golden Bay. Another place with soul and lots of character. The owner is a very friendly, kind and interesting person with a lot of stories to tell - very inspiring. We were lucky to be almost alone at the unpowered sites and we also had a full moon so the walk to the beach was like a dream. If you need a place to stay the night in Golden Bay; don't hesitate to check this place out. Horseback riding, beautiful walks, a beach, glowworms and an original good vibe camp setting; this place has it all! Thank you for having us, we will be back!
j.
The place to hack ‘n stay in Tākaka, Golden Bay! Beach trek, farm ride, bush and bird song - experience it all from the back of beautifully trained horses. Thank you Bärbel for your kindness, direct teaching, sense of humour, understanding and knowledge sharing when it comes to ‘centred riding’ - loved my lesson in paradise!
S.
Thanks Bärbel for the wonderful experience. We stayed for a night at your great campsite and rode the Hack Track on your horses. Beautiful scenery and great introduction into horse riding for me and my too little girls - they're still talking about it. We'll definitely come back again. Thanks 😊
손.
Excellent horse riding experience! I was able to feel how much Barbel cares about their horses and she is a passionate person. Thank you very much for everything!!
L.
Thank you so much Barbal for your wonderful horse trekking experience which we both thoroughly enjoyed. Faye had riding experience from when she was younger and I Lewis had never riden a horse before, but with your light hearted detailed explanation and guidance, and with a beautiful location on a brilliant warm sunny day, it is an experience we will remember and would love to repeat the next time we are here, and to stay and sample your warm accommodation experience. Thank again and wishing you all the Best...Faye and Lewis

Stayed here twice in the last 2 years, fantastic place to stay, friendly chilled staff, great setup, hot showers, lots of space so you don’t feel crowded. Highest recommended.

Had a fantastic stay here. It was the highlight of my week long trip. It's the coolest hilltop farm and the people who work there clear know and care a lot about the horses.
We had an amazing guild, Jess, who had previously worked with horses overseas and was able to tell us all about where the horses had retired from and and how each one was to deal with.
All the bathrooms and community areas were clean and very well thought out.
10/10

Probably one of the nicest campsites I've stayed at in NZ. I was a bit hesitant going in as its primary focus is horses, and I'm fairly ambivalent about horses, but found it to be a really lovely place. Even enjoyed having the horses around!
Quite liked the terracing of the campsites, fruit and native trees planted throughout, character of the houses and facilities (the showers are lovely, and warm with good pressure, and was nice and clean and well constructed). Really enjoyed being able to wander around and explore all the things they've done with the place, from the lake, to the social areas, to the walking trail to the beach. The place attracts people who are laid back, respectful and fun, so even when people were up late you could still sleep if you felt like it. It felt a lot like where I grew up in many ways.
Having read other people's reviews, it seems like the rare review that isn't 5/5 was expecting a hotel, which it is not. It is very much a family farm with lots of lovely people, animals (horses and dogs), and character. It's a place you go to slow down and enjoy what life offers you. Come with that in your mind and you'll really enjoy it.

Enjoyable stay!
Super friendly host and people at the lovely and well-cared farm.
We stayed at the farmhouse. Well equipped kitchen with some free food and ingredients for use. The beds are extremely comfy, probably the best sleep I have ever had in NZ.
Shame that we only stayed for a night and didn't have a chance to do the horse riding, will come back and stay longer for sure!

My friend and I were only expecting to stay one one night at the campsite, but stayed two because we loved it so much. The lady who owns it is so sweet and wonderful. She put a lot of care into having a nice place for people. The kitchen is small, but well equipped and way better than cooking out of your car. There’s a lovely little “gypsy cart” lounge that we enjoyed. Also, take the trail to the beach. You won’t regret it.
s.
Wonderful! ,the environment is charming, the Hack n Stay Team are professional ,supportive and knowledgeable, learnt new aspects in riding encompassing safety and welfare for both horse and rider. A variety of different horses with their own personalities makes for an interesting and enjoyable experience for horses lovers,I loved it!!!!! I hope I can return soon.

If you are lucky to find this place go and grab a lesson or more of horse riding. Baerbl the owner and the teacher is amazing and in 2 hours she can teach you lot of things:) The place has a great vibe and you can feel it from every corner. It's a simple camping with everything all you need and more. It's like a genius loci. Thank you for everything 🤠🤠🤠
S.
Really enjoyable and informative horse riding experience for all of us, ranging from experienced rider to never ridden before. Friendly and experienced guides, and close to the famous Mussel Inn for a post-ride meal or drink. Highly recommended.
R.
As a novice rider I had an amazing experience. I’m allergic to horses yet wanted to try a ride and I’m so glad I did. After initial instruction I was able to spend time getting used to being in the saddle. My partner and I rode to the beach and I even got to ride without the lead on way back. We learned about assisting the horse and working together. My allergy was managed and we were able to shower afterwards. Highly recommend . Baerbel is an understanding and patient instructor. Thank you.
T.
We were very pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and cuteness of the facilities. Also very quiet area and a nice walk to the beach, where you can see glow worms on the way at night! The owners were super friendly. Overall nothing to dislike here 😊

I came here following my heart and I certainly didnt regret it. Bärbel created a very unique place that instantly made me feel home. I stayed two nights in my van, so I cant say a lot about the accomodation itself, like rooms, breakfast etc, but the facilities provided for campers (seperate kitchen cabin, lounge and bathrooms) are very welcoming, clean and provide everything you could wish for. Bärbel herself is a truly unique being with lots of life experience and riding knowledge. I did the 2,5h horse track with her and two others. Her horses are a dream, very calm and reliable. Since I was looking for a more holistic riding approach, Hack n Stay was the perfect place to end up at. Bärbel provides a lot of information about finding balance on a horseback which makes the life easier for the horse as well as the rider. She actively helps you improve your communication with the horse and learn to understand how your actions influence the riding process. I truly learned a lot from her during my stay in all areas of life and can recommend this experience to everyone willing to learn and grow and experience an authentic time, whether its on a horseback or just for a night on a wonderful farm.

Amazing friendly hosts both two and four legged. Great facilities and spacious campsites. Rope swings and the raft on the lake are great fun for kids from 8 to 80.
L.
Great trekking with Baerbel and her horses ! It's way more than just a trek, she really teaches you horse riding and in a way where every rider (even if experienced) will learn things ! I was so happy with It that I had to stay another day to get a lesson ! The horses are great, the people are great, the place is great and fun ! Thanks for everything !
L.
Exceptional little campsite. All necessary amenities, good hot shower, equipped little kitchen for cooking. It might get busy, so be sure to arrive earlier. Owner is very welcoming. I stayed in tent behind farm house and night was calm. If you decide to walk to beach, I suggest to wear good shoes as road is muddy and uneven in some parts due construction. Definitely check out glow worms too.
T.
Had a very pleasant stay at Hack 'n Stay and loved the overall experience. Although the whole farm is still in development, the already finished parts are made with love and speak a coherent design language. The customer service by several volunteers was also very good, friendly and instructive.
I only would love to have a normal stove to cook on besides the barbecue and other cooking facilities. There might also be a better solution for charging devices, maybe in an external shed? ;-)
Overall full recommendation of this lovely campground!
(No experience with the horse riding but the staff seemed well-versed)

Great horses, lovely farm, amazing experience!
We loved our stay at Bärbels farm. We spent one night with our campervan. Both, the facilities and the kitchen for campers were very clean and lovely.
On recommendation we did a night walk to the beach (which is about 20 minutes one way) and we absolutely enjoyed the glow worm city on the way.
We scheduled a ride for the next day and Bärbel was very keen on matching us with the right horse depending on our experiences (I am an experienced rider whereas my boyfriend has never been sitting on a horse before). We were a group of 5 (including Bärbel) and we absolutely loved the way she treats her horses! She explained a lot about her training methods and even though I have been riding for almost 14 years I’ve learned a lot from her.
The horses are all very sensible but reliable and absolutely well behaved and Bärbel is very keen on making sure everyone treats them the right way (which is great!).
She made sure everybody is comfortable before we made our way down to the beach. The beach itself is stunning and Bärbel encouraged the more experienced riders to go for a canter along the beach while she was staying with the others.
All in all we really loved our stay and especially our ride a lot. This is a place where horses are really treated as they should be - gently, respectful and without too much pressure.
We would definitely recommend to stay and to ride with Bärbel even when your experience with horses differs. She will make it work.
We would like come back someday and would love to stay for a few days. Highly recommended!! Thank you Bärbel!
E.
Thank you so much for the amazing experience Bärbel and Annetta. What incredible people to ride with and learn from, surrounded by such beautiful scenery. Would love to come back and visit!

We first read about Hack Farm on TripAdvisor and were so pleased to see a horse activity that would cater to our youngest family member Mr 4.
From the first email communication, Baerbel was accommodating, enthusiastic and flexible.
The experience itself was just magic. Everything adjusted to our skill level, and our young children. Baerbel checked in on the kids and carried on with the trek at a pace that worked well for us.
Baerbel was extremely friendly, and knowledgeable about the native trees surrounding us, and the wildlife around the farm and beach.
Our oldest son Mr 7 learnt to stand on the horse and do all sorts of tricks, both boys asking can we go back tomorrow after being there today.
If you’re a family, this is the perfect activity to do together. We will be back!
A.
Stayed as Airbnb guests and really enjoyed our stay! The beds were extremely comfy and Baerbel is a super host always asking us If we had everything we needed and also giving us some tips on what to do on some rainy days. All in all a very warm and welcoming athmosphere. I especially enjoyed my ride at the beach! :)
Z.
Come for a night, stay for a week!! It’s that kind of spot. Baerbel has something to offer to everyone who is open to discovering something. We enjoyed both the accommodations and an enlightened beach guided horse trek. She really understands horses.
“That’s mental,” in regards to horse vaulting.
“No, that’s balance,” Baerbel proudly shared!
BALANCE BALANCE BALANCE!!
Stop by, you won’t regret it!

Beautiful Place.
A farm inside the nature, everything is perfect.
The owners are really kind.
If you are coming to Golden Bay you definitely have to stop here.
Good vibes.
Nice walk to the beach.

We had a great time here! We were a group with mixed experience in horse riding and we all felt that the ride was neither too easy nor too difficult. We had a wonderful experience riding up and downhill through the Nz countryside and then on the beautiful beach. The campsite is well maintained and had all the facilities you need. WELL WORTH THE MONEY! 👍😁🐎

Ideal farm stay for our family. SO many activities-a great bargain: Clean rooms, clean hot showers, homemade bread and farm fresh eggs and a full kitchen to prepare meals. We made pizza and had a bonfire in the lovely outdoor oven, we picked herbs in the garden, we had coffee on the deck and watched the horses, we swam at the beach in high tide and walked on the property to a huge glow worm dell at night. It was only 1 hr drive to Abel Tasman, a short Pupu springs hike, and the intense sunset at Wharariki beach. We mostly cooked in the lovely kitchen but also enjoyed a delicious dinner at covered garden at Mussel Inn (tire swing for the kiddo between courses!). We found all these treasures thanks to the helpful info from the dedicated hostess. We were so taken by her knowledge of animals and nature that our family decided to go for a horse trek to the beach. We learned so much about the horses and our posture. we kept extending our stay-so much to do at this magical place. Highest recommendation! This place was the most affordable and yet it was the highlight of our time in NZ. Don't miss it!

Bay and izzy were awesome friendly guides a must do in golden bay. Cheers team!

Hi everyone i loved going here the horses are amazing and so quiet and the hosts is amazing
R.
FANTASTIC horse riding experience. Cannot rave enough about it. First and foremost, what I really liked was how Hack'n Stay care about their horses' health and safety, from teaching the riders how to help the horse go up and down the steep hills, to having the riders bond a bit with their horse (give them a good brushing) before the ride and feeding the horses at the end of the ride.
We spent two hours on a beautiful ride with horses Chloe and Luke; our guide Ellie was on horse Leonard. Ellie was helpful, calm and knew exactly what we and our horses were doing at all times. We were beginners and Ellie's encouragement and pointers of how we could help the horses were welcomed and made our experience even better.
The scenery was breath taking! After going up and down a few steep hills, we ended up on an expansive beach. The horses got to splash their hooves in the water, and we got incredibly close to all the shorebirds (oyster catchers, herons, sea gulls, etc.) that were poking their bills into the sand at the shore line.
If you have a chance to get out there, do it!
C.
The best place overall to have a relaxed and full filing horse riding experience. Great atmosphere and fantastic vives all around. The hosts are amazing, they always go out of the way to help in anything they can. There is just not enough starts to rate them.
T.
stayed here for one night in our campervan + tent, facilities were clean and beautiful decorated. the camperkitchen was small, but completely sufficient for our needs. staff was super friendly and awesome. the beach is a 20min walk but if you walk in the dark you will see some awesome glowworms!!
D.
Have stayed at Hack N Stay 3 times now. Each time they went out of their way to accommodate me and my friends. Great campsite, great facilities and beautiful views and walks!
J.
Lovely little campsite, can't say anything about the horse riding etc but the campsite has everything you need. Hot showers, drinking water, kitchen and I found it awesome that you can charge your stuff there. Cheers guys.
H.
I had such a fab time, I had asked to ride a Clydesdale if at all possible as I used to ride them as a child.
it was my dream to get back onto a Clydey again one day and they made that dream happen.
Thank you so much guys for organizing that.
R.
Very grateful to Baerbel today for loading my horse onto the float to come home. She was very obliging coming at such short notice & is extremely capable. My horse would probably still be in Golden Bay if not for her friendly, knowledgeable help. Thank you so much.
J.
A beautiful, unique place with kind owners. The camping facilities are very well made and kept immaculate. We loved our time here and couldn’t help but extend our stay.

(Translated) Beautifully located farm right on Golden Bay. Nice rides that adults and children alike enjoy. Bärbel (together with her husband Thomas the owner of the farm) is also a very good riding instructor with a lot of experience. Everyone can go here. The absolute professional rider but also someone who has never been on a horse. The beach can also be reached in a short walk. The blue penguins, unique to New Zealand, live here. In the evening / at night, fireflies can be observed on the forest towards the beach. There is also a small, cozy campsite with 12 powered sites on the farm. The sanitary facilities also have their very own charm, as they are cute little wooden huts that have been lovingly painted and designed - just like the small camping kitchen. You could think that you have traveled to the wild west. But with electricity and running warm water. ;)
Danger! The otherwise peaceful farm dog Moe loves to steal socks. ;)

Achtung! Der ansonsten friedliche Farmhund Moe klaut ganz gerne Socken. ;)

(Translated) The stay was definitely worth it! Actually, we were just looking for somewhere to stay in the car. Ultimately we got the best riding lesson of our lives and stayed 2 days :)
In my 6 years of riding experience, I have never sat on such a sensitive and well-trained horse! The owners and staff are very warm and open.
A big thank you for the valuable tips to the horse whisperer Bärbel :)
