Reviews of The Elms | Te Papa Tauranga

Only $ 10 entrance. Lovely staff. Have a nice guided tour. Interesting about settling, picture from the past . View from the garden on the dunes, beach and mountain. And now a days, harbour, ware houses etc. Remembers us that progress is not always for the best.
M.
Wow! Such beautiful grounds with so much history, 3 delightful guides took me around, they were so enthusiastic and passionate about sharing the information about the Elms. And I did not know the first ever building in New Zealand of the library amazing! And listening to the guides I felt I had been transported back in time visualizing them walking around from the 1800's. So much to see so many interesting everyday items used that we dont need to use these days, that were so valuable back then, even common illnesses such as asthma which effected one of those living in this time died. Highly recommend to visit.
J.
Immaculately kept and amazing history. Staff are so well versed with knowledge and it was a fun beautiful experience.
J.
Wonderful guided tour. Thanks Dorothy and Philippa. We got a real sense for Tauranga's early history. Amazing that so much of the property is just as the family left it. Beautiful gardens too. Can recommend the short walk to the nearby cemetery also.
M.
The Elms is well worth a visit. Tauranga has so little history and grand old buildings so this place is a treasure worth preserving. Lovely grounds and interesting history.
C.

This is a beautiful site which hosts original buildings from the original settlers in the 19th C. On arrival we were introduced to our tour guide, Maureen and she was great. Knowledgeable about the site, the buildings and the Bush. She showed around the gardens, library and the house and then we able to wander around on our own. The grounds are so well maintained. We had a really lovely time here today, and thank you Maureen!
H.

it's a wonderful historical trip which ranks I'm the top 3 in New Zealand for importance. the Tauranga Mission mist be seen for anyone interested in New Zealand history. the guides are expert and are happy to field any questions on the unique artefacts they have. with a new extension planned for for 1000s of significant historical items this place will only get better and better!
E.
This is the most wonderful place honoring the Mission Station in the 1830s and the Tangata Whenua and it's part in local history. Not just a pretty Georgian house full of quaint treasures. I had a wonderful knowledgable guide Beverley whom I must have exhausted as she showed me the grounds and buildings. Loved the many stories she told. Thank you Tauranga for valuing your past Maori & Pakeha alike.
C.

The Elms Mission house is full of history from the time of the arrival of missionaries to the area through the Maori land wars with the battle of Gate Pa in 1864 and up to more recent times. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable and took time to discuss all our questions. The gardens are also worth seeing and are well kept with a number of impressive specimen trees.
D.
Reflecting the colonial past The Elms gives us a window on the past from the early 1800s. If you want to see and hear the fascinating history of this strategy area then this is the place. Guided tours are very reasonably priced.
A.
Charming early NZ historic house and the gardens would be a great place for a picnic. The guides give you a good insight to colonial history of the area. Respect to families who have saved this place for future generations.
R.
The house and surrounds are fabulous and I really enjoyed all the information that the tour guide spoke of
M.
I came here first when my friend's grandparents (the Maxwells) were living here as the caretakers. I enjoy coming back into the grounds amongst the mature trees for visits. It used to be a very quiet place but now there's a bit of traffic noise. Guided tours are offered between 11am & 3pm for a small charge. It's free to visit the garden
C.
Such a beautiful gem in the middle of the city. Covid meant we were unable to enjoy the full extent of the Elms but I'll be back.
S.
A tour guide will walk you through the mission house and tell of battles and hardships for the Maori and missionaries. The giant trees add to the history and the setting is tucked away from the city above the motorway. A small fee includes access to the chapel and sheds of the era – if you don’t take the tour the grounds are open for photos.

The mission station was founded in the 1800s during the Maori wars, and was used for a time as a hospital for soldiers wounded in the battles of Gate Pa & Te Ranga, when peace came the missionaries eventually made friends with the indigenous Maori taking in students to teach them up to date agricultural practices.
