Reviews of Orakau
W.Very special and significant place. Very important part of NZ History. I cant understand why the road had to go through the middle.
B.Great food great variety good value but the iced chocolate was more like a Milo with ice cubes in it. Highly recommend.
P.Random stop was interesting so looked up you tube posts on the battle rounding off the knowledge gained. Found wood ear on nearby tree.
S.If there were no signs you would never know this was there as the highway goes right thru it. It is a significant battle site, but it's just unfortunate the other half of the site is on the other side of the highway which is inaccessible
R.Well marked so it's easy to find with a small memorial for such a significant place.
F.Significant place of history. Take someone learned with you!
P.Doesn't look much now but this place was where the Battle of Ōrākau happened that inspired the 1925 movie "Rewi's Last Stand".
The battle also led to the creation of the King Country where Maori retreated into the hinterland, away from the British imperial and colonial troops.
A.One of the many memorials around the mighty Waikato area. A must visit spot to remind us of some of NZ terrible history during the Maori wars.
E.Amazing history forgotten on the side of the road. Sadly underwhelming cenotaph for what is such an important part of Aotearoa history
