Reviews of Whanganui Regional Museum
Awesome place with lots to see and explore. The waka area is just awesome, my kids loved checking it out and all the history around the area. They also really liked the new exhibit with the animals, especially the different poo lol. Well worth checking out and if you do have children they'll love it!
Good to go here. You can learn about Maori culture with detailed display and natural history like fossils with free entry. If you have time, it is better to visit here.
A awesome step back in time reminiscent of your youth. Something to catch everyone's interest. A must visit for all locals as it is free entry however a donation is absolutely worth it.
What a fantastic museum. We only did the ground floor as there was so much to take in. Looking forward to Looking upstairs next time
Amazing.!!! You must make time to visit this awesome collection of important historical memorabilia. There are Original artifacts along with historical exhibitions regarding this area. Lindauer paintings at their best if you love art. Too much to mention but I found it very interesting and I would highly recommend a visit for all ages. Kids will love the interactive fun activities too.
A wonderful collection of museum pieces beautifully displayed makes one appreciate the history of such amazing piece of NZ
A great museum showing the early days of our shared history. A few Goldies in there as well . Great
Amazing staff, great displays,
Took our s
8 year old he loved it
Amazing display at our local museum, a must see. So many diverse animals on display "Teeth, Talon's @Taxidermy".
Now I wouldn't consider myself as well versed when it comes to visiting museums. I have only ever been to a handful. So far this one takes the cake. I got to see a plethora of amazing creatures and features. The building is well layed out with plenty of space and places to see. I couldn't believe my eyes with some of the attractions on display. The rarity of some of the pieces was astounding. I will remember this museum trip for years to come.
If anyone wants to see things ranging from a wedding dress to rocks that pre date the planet this is the place to go.
Not only did this place fill my heart with wonder but it also filled my mind with joy.
Loved every second.
I will definitely return in the future.
Nice welcome at reception everything nice and clean thank you I will bring the grandchildren next time
Kids absolutely loved this museum! The taxidermy, skeletons and bugs were amazing.
Great museum full of artifacts enjoyed the Maori display and the period pieces
Tidy and clean facilities with interesting displays, my granddaughter loved it. Free entry for the locals or tho donations are accepted and so worth it.
It is very interesting. There are so much history in such a small space. We could even dress for photos. No food or drinks allowed.
Lovely ladies at the counter who explained the exhibits to my son well and with heaps of enthusiasm. Enjoyed our trip the museum. You can make eftpos donations at the counter too, not just cash donations in the donation box at the front entrance.
Great for kids to experience different activities. Beach fossicking a favourite.
Beautiful place filled with amazing and rich history of Whanganui and its pioneers and ancestors.
Awesome museum and gallery with a massive collection. The museum us a story unto itself!
Good museum, lots of interesting information.
This is an excellent museum. The displays are really interesting, and exceptionally well laid out. The display of "Goldie" paintings was very impressive.
Wonderful informative inspiring passionate staff!
Really enjoyed this visit, our grandson loved the animal poo display . Not too big to walk around in comfort. I have visited twice in recent weeks and will go again soon.
Great little historical museum.
Many years since I've been. Great revamp.
A geeat place to learn about history, Maori culture, and to remember old times and fashion. There's a wide variety of topics and the display of items is amazing. The museum is clean and beautiful and the staff are very friendly. The surroundings are amazingly beautiful, apart from being in a good location.
Lovely place. Clean and exhibitions very interesting. I personal enjoyed the taxidermy exhibition.
I didn't expect much from a museum in Whanganui, but this was quite a surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed the Te Ao Māori exhibition on the lower floor and the portraits (with background history) of some prominent Māori figures. On top of that, the upper floor contained a wide range of nature collections and lives in the past.
Interesting historical items. The taxidermy display was very good and informative too. Well worth a visit.
Totally go here. Whanganui is full of great historical architecture and the museum, albeit small, has one of the best sections of Maori history I've seen. A must. Also the Turnbull library is just up the hill. Totally worth checking out.
Good activity sheet for my grandies.
Very well layed out and a good range of things to see .
very cool place
interesting and informative
A great view into the past, interesting artifacts and fairly well curated despite being in a temporary location. Small gift shop as well.
Love our beautiful museum my kids love to come here and we will continue to come in
Fantastic museum! A great range of interesting displays. The Maori Court is a fascinating insight into Maori culture and history. The Lindauer portrait gallery is a highlight, with beautiful paintings. The upstairs area has an amazing collection of Moa bones as well as lots of historical objects related to the Whanganui area. Activities for kids include puzzles and dress ups. Lovely helpful front of house staff and a delightful gift shop with a good selection of books, toys, jewellery and locally made artisan items. Well worth a visit, free entry!
What it lacks in size it makes up for in variety. Plenty of exhabits to see and well laid out. I think one of the hilights was listening to the Maori musical instruments.
A revamped and strengthened building reopened its doors in mid March 2019. Some exhibits remain the same whilst others are brand new. There are a number of more recent artifacts which would appeal to a younger audience. A criticism is that it is not interactive in any sense and are artifacts on display.
Amazing for a regional museum. Something to interest everyone. Especially fascinated by the Moa collection and Lindauer art.
An amazing place to go with your family and friends. Has lot of reach history of town, region and the nation. Aint too big, but it is good to go with time. Check also om the web page for the extra activities for the kids. They are good.
Something our little town should be very proud of.
Huge! Great displays, well worth a visit.
Wonderful collection of New Zealand history. Well explained and interconnected exhibitions. Well worth the visit.
This museum is a great regional museum that explores the human (Máori and European) history as well as the natural history of the Whanganui area. It has exhibits specific to Whanganui and some more general displays. The sections devoted to move and Máori practices are particularly engaging. When you're done, the downtown is a short walk away.
Fantastic museum! Well worth a visit.
Very friendly staff too.
Neat little museum, amazing way to connect to the history of the area :)
Awesome facilities, shame no concrete pads available for motorhomes/caravans.
.
One of my favourite museums ever, Whanganui you are blessed! The refresh of Te Atihaunui a Pāpārangi retains the original essence but it just looks great! The new Lindauer Gallery is so sumptuous in that regal purple and the upstairs galleries really capture the history of the region. What an amazing transformation. This museum has one of Aotearoa's best collections, covering natural and social history and interpreted biculturally. Stunningly good.
Museum not really big but pleasant. Some interesting Maori artefacts. A room is reserved for the kids : they have to collect evidences to find who stole the moa’s bone. Besides, if you want to see a lot of moa’s bones visit this museum. At the end you can dress you with costumes of the 19th century and take pictures : lot of fun!
The displays showing traditional Maori fishing methods and way of life really opened my eyes. Why weren't we taught more about this in school?!
I remember the Whanganui Museum when I was kid. The Classroom was my favourite part. There isn't much left of the classroom. There is a nice gift shop.
Fantastic place for learing about Whanganui and New Zealand as a whole. Many of the locally focused exibits will show you things you cant see anywhere else.
Lovely old building with some interesting exhibits.
Great little museum, thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Highly recommended to all.
Took the kids here, they lived learning about the past, keeping it on my to do list in the future
So we'll laid out and it's entry by donation. Just brilliant. Thank you
What amazing place
So well set out. Alot of hands on for the kids.
Pioneer displays are interesting lots for the children to see and learn about. The Waka and early paintings of Maori are a feature. My boy loved it here.
Only regret is I had not enough time to explore all of its collection. Would not miss a chance to visit again
One of the best of 10. Never get tired of taking 3rd generation of great grans to this place. Library and gallery close by
Really enjoyed it. Maori oil paintings and artifacts. Moa bones. Good display of wedding frocks.
Just enough to keep you reading....great choice of local artifacts and not too heavy on war
Great facility to visit. So much history
Very nice little traditional museum. Lovely staff, and beautifully presented.
Awesome. Kids really enjoyed the Moa's skull mystery. Definitely worth a visit if you've got a few hours to spare.
Just re-opened after earthquake strengthening .... really nice way to spend a couple of hours in Whanganui, good exhibitions for both kids and afults
amazing Maori section that should be visited every few years just to catch up with the displays! Awhina is THE business
I have never seen a museum that showed poop of various animals. :). That was really funny.
Very good displays but it was far too cold - warmer outside!!
So much to do and see, so much local history. The staff are great and happy to help you out with question and information.
Awesome museum. Great staff and very good exhibits.
Was a good experience. Except for the Y.M.C.A visit by the kids. To loud. My elderly mum had to walk out of the Museum.
Nice display items.
A absolute treat excellent display
Relatively small regional museum with extensive collection of Māori paints and artifacts
Lovely building, sadly didn't get inside
Fantastic, next time there will allow more time.
The Lindauer collection is an absolute must see. The portraits are just stunning.
Still under renovations but the staff were great and the exhibits are interesting.
Still closed for renovations, open next month (March 2019). I put 3 starts because I thought that was the most neutral option.
Enjoyable.. lovely helpful courteous staff..a privilege to visit...
Loved it
Great venue great people educating and most of all free
Very interesting museum to wander through
Great museum. Must visit if you are in town.
Quite small museum and all the collections are mixed up so this museum does not have any concept, thus it was quite difficult to focus on the artefacts in museum
Great place to spend an hour, loved the Lindauer paintings
Great permanent exhibitions, good visiting exhibits.
Fantastic museum, especially enjoyed the exhibit on beaked whales.
Great place to hang out for an hour & take in some NZ history.
Lots of stairs. Dunno if there was an easier way upstairs for limpets like me.
Us Wellington tourists were impressed
Have been there in the past, yesterday only went passed it as my car was in the car park behind the museum.
Great exhibits. Well presented displays.
Great displays, children loved dressing up
Brilliant classical NZ museum. Keep it that way. Do not "modernise" it.
Friendly staff and interesting displays
Amazing and so much interesting items on display
Excellent small museum
Doesn't take long to get around. Very interesting
Free, historical and stunning Maori history!
Nice collection. Also interesting for local knowledge
