Reviews of Trounson Kauri Park
A. J.
On our first camping trip to this site, we stumbled along the visitors book and read that you can see kiwi's at night. That night once it went dark we headed out, and this short walk then took us over 4 hours as we listened to the kiwis call and move around in the bush close to you. The following week we drove back with Flash lights that were covered in red cellophane (the kiwis do not notice the red light) and sat on the walking track all night watching as the kiwis' come up so close that you could almost touch them! Every now and then we make a round trip (3+ hrs drive each way) just to watch them for a few hours. This is an absolute gem and a must do experience
m.
A nice, easy and peaceful walk through the park, with a great collection of small and giant Kauri trees before you, and at every turn.
S. ..
Douch bag taking up two parking spaces. Campers brought the very big dog to the site. Disappointing behaviour in not respecting others or the environment.
H.
This place is pretty isolated but when we were there, there was a big family playing games on the field before the walk. Going on the walk is quite emotional because you get to see first hand some Kauri's dying. To see such beautiful giants in that condition is disappointing, but overall seeing the Kauri trees is spectacular. There are so many Kauri's on the walk, however after the long, twisty drive into the park, going on the walk is pretty tiring, so I would definitely recommend bringing snacks and maybe even lunch before you go. There are seats there, but you should probably take a picnic blanket with you too.
s. b. (.
Great place to spot kiwis in the wild. The loop walk takes you through the historic kauri forest. Easy walk. Campsite has both powered and non powered sites. There's a map of where you should put your tent. Better to book online but if you're lucky you can get a spot on the day(need cash to pay). Campsite is located adjacent to the park and you can hear the birds distinctly- kiwis, morepoks (owls). The kitchen has electric hot tops (inductive), no gas. Kitchen was also equipped with a refrigerator, toaster and a kettle. Some red paper could be found in the kitchen for the normal torches (make sure you have your own red light source). There's a very high chance of spotting a kiwi be patient and enter when its dark.. please stick to the path. Enjoy spotting a kiwi in the wild! I

So many giant kauri trees and many beautiful native trees. Good track. Easy walking.
Toilet available and area to picnic.
P. M.
Some seriously large Kauri here and it is part of a 20 minute circular Bush walk on a boardwalk. Tranquil quiet birdsong - plaques with native tree details. The toilets are on the right just at the end of the ramp to the information shelter. Don't leave valuables in plain sight lock your vehicle. Well worth the side trip to get here. More enjoyable than the 50 metre walk at Tane Mahuta. Remember to look for the Weta display (unhook the bark door) next to the poem.
C. (.
You can witness just how deviating Kauri dieback truly is and witness it first hand!
We found this by mistake last winter and enjoyed it then.
I went back again to take more photos using my film camera.
A short walk can take a few hours when you stop to take photos.
J. C.
Absolutely loved staying at this campground and taking the loop walk.
Facilities are clean, with fridge, cooktops, sinks, and solar heated water for showers.
Toilets could use some work and soap.
Did the loop walk in the day and night. No kiwis sighted, but heard. Saw lots of glow worms.
The kauri were amazing and beautiful.
J. C. (. C.
Great place to learn about Kauri in real life. Save the Kauri Forests. Protect the Kauri one of the largest and longest living trees on earth! They are dying from Kauri dieback disease.
I. 5.
Good camp site, with ok amenities. We had access to hot water even thou camp was busy. Nice bush walk next to camp. Although at $20 per person per night seems pricy.
S. M.
This is a beautiful, easy, captivating walk surrounded with Kauri giants and other native Bush. Incredibly sad to see Kauri Dieback taking over in areas - definitely educating, precaution needs to be taken with washing shoes and staying on track as stated at the beginning of the walk.
Would definitely return.
S. K.
Great walk through native bush, with many large Kauri. We saw Kerereu on a couple of occasions. The loop may take 30 minutes but it's easy to spend longer here. Suitable walking for all levels of fitness, mostly on boardwalks.
R. M.
Totally worth the stop. Never seen so many kauri trees in one place. Lovely boardwalk through the forest. Good for kids. Little info centre and toilets.
M.
Lovely little place nestled up against the kauri forest. Great place to stay overnight with hot water and really good cooking facilities. We stayed for a couple of nights underneath some trees for shade and watching the bunny rabbits running round all day. Very peaceful. It does get a bit of reception with spark. Not sure about the others.
M. “. C.
Came here almost by accident. Well worth the effort. The walkways in this rain forest, preserved since 1921, enable an enjoyable stroll of around 20 mins to see these magnificent trees. There an information centre but not manned. The entry to the park is protected by footware cleaning and disinfecting stations which are probably necessary but look to me to prevent wheelchair access.
F. A.
A nice piece of forest with Kauri trees, the walk through it is not that long, but there are some beautiful things to see. In the streems you will find very big eels, and when you go late or in the middle of the night, then you can come eye to eye with a kiwi.
The corresponding campsite is very basic, you have power there is a toilet and shower. Adequate cooking facilities and you can sit in the kitchen to eat.
C. T.
Lovely walk through the Kauri Forest, family friendly and evena spot to stop and read more about the place or have lunch at the picnic table.
T. G.
Amazing trees, very easy walk.
With a 5 year old in tow, approx 45 - 1h walk.
m. j.
Trounson Park is over 100 years as a Reserve
But the mighty Kauri are many 100 s of years.
Sadly, dieback is killing these icons of our bush.
Many dead Kauri standing.
M. B.
This is a very special place. We saw a north island brown kiwi last night. Some of the best examples of large kauri.
K. W. S.
Lovely quiet place with awesome park walk. Hot water and showers, luxury
P. S.
Beautiful. The trees are stunning and well worth a visit. Obey the rules and help protect our natural history though!
D. L.
its a beautiful place to visit and walk amongst these giants. My girlfriend and I enjoyed walking through the well laid out (and new) board walks and being wowed by the emensity and sheer size of these trees
R. L.
Fabulous Kauri forest walk. Relatively easy 40mins total loop walk including access walk. Interesting to note ancient Maori food storage pits near top of Pa site.
R. S.
Great walk to see the big trees. The dieback is really sad to see so make sure you disinfect properly.
P. T.
An awe-inspiring and truly amazing 2 hours wandering through the Kauri Park. The slower pace was well worth it and the DoC campground was bullish. Spent two days there and thoroughly enjoyed the dawn chorus and the noisy kiwis in the night.
D. W. S.
Great spot for Kauri tree walk and overnight camp.
P. S.
one of the best kauri walks I've ever been on, hands down
B. M.
Saw a Kiwi, A couple of very chilled out Kereru, and a Kokako... And some wetas. Oh yeah and some Kauri... The walk around the park is incredibly well looked after... Proper cool spot.
L. S.
Well worth the detour. Loved the easy loop walk
B. B.
Walkway is easy and well maintained. Plenty of informative signage and lots to see. We also managed to spot a Kiwi after dark.
However I question the value of the adjoining DOC campground - though it has its own direct access to the walkway and the hot showers are good, they are charging the same price as the nearby commercial holiday parks for less service. In particular there's no rubbish collection, the toilets leak and the kitchen isn't great.
K. K.
Really nice walk. Especially going at night time when kiwis come out. We stayed at the nearby camping ground and it was really handy to access the park from there. Will certainly come back.
D. H.
Walk amongst the majesty of Kauri trees and other wildlife in this beautiful remnant forest. It is a little off the highway but very well worthwhile. We had the place almost to ourselves in mid winter which added to the impact. Huge trees give a perspective very different from day to day business of life. There is a well made walking track through the forest and some open grounds suitable for picnic etc.
N. V.
Track is currently closed for maintenance (8/03/22), not mentioned anywhere on website.
R. B.
Well organised had Rangers for questions but no information talks
J. P.
Fab. So well done. A real wonderful resource.
The doc have created a fab walk though the woods with lots of signs and info.
During daytime you get to go deep into this wonderful forest and see all the plants and trees.
By night you get to hear Kiwi and see glow worms.
THANKYOU Mr Trounson and DOC
M. D.
Our first DOC camp ground in NZ. Really nice. Good facilities; flush toilets, stoves, kettles, sinks, fridge freezer and a fabulous Kauri walk. Unfortunately we didn't see any kiwis but we did spot glow worms. I don't know if we were just lucky but everyone we met there was very friendly and the site had a good atmosphere.
S. W.
So lovely and clean, beautiful walk, wonderful time
S. M.
Nice small park with bush walks and boardwalks. Good chance of spotting Kiwi if you have a powerful red spotlight. Basic Camp site with new ceramic cooking stove and excellent hot shower pressure.
B. K.
Great Forest Park, easy walk through the state of NZ hundreds of years ago.
S. T. T.
Visited twice in 24 hours. The first visit was a guided two hour walk at night. We were looking for the elusive Kiwi. It was lovely walking there in the dark hearing the Kiwis call, and the Owls. The trees looked magnificent in the dark. This guided night time tour can be booked through the nearby TOP10 campsite. You don't have to be staying there to book.
We did see a Kiwi at the end of the walk, and a Possum who showed us no fear.
Next day we redid the walk in daylight. The Kauri trees in the daylight still looked large. It was a shame to see the dying trees, being killed by a fungus.
P. R.
Best place in NZ to see large amount of Kauri in one place. Was awsome to walk amongst those "giant' hope they come up with some results soon to treat the Kauri die back would be a shame to see the dissappear. To help them wash your shoes before entering the forest.!
A. D.
A highlight of our trip to Northland. A beautiful bush setting, undisturbed by loggers and in its natural state. Walk through on the paths and see these mighty kauri trees...lots of them!! In fact, in areas of the 30 minute walk, you can turn in a 360 degree and see more than a dozen kauri trees!! Thank you Mr Trounson, who gifted the land in 1921 for us all to enjoy!!
A. F.
Amazing short walk (30 mins r
Loop track) through native forest and Kauri trees. Information signs and boardwalk along the way. Toilets and campground near by too.
N. M.
Amazing walk amongst the Kauri trees. Most on a flat boardwalk and only 30 minute loop so perfect for kids - ours (3 - 9 yrs) loved it!
E. L.
This is very well developed park, with good protective walk path (protects the kauri) don't just walk pass (less than 30min walk), but spend an hour here. Read the information they provided you and enjoy the place well worth the detour.
G. A.
Well worth seeing if you want some peace and quiet and if you go late in the evening, you might spot some real kiwis in the wild. Many huge kauris. This park is largely bypassed by the tourist masses. If staying at nearby top10 motorcamp (which is excellent) they run kiwi tours or hire infrared spot lights.
B. K.
nice place to try to see wild kiwi and beautiful kauris. It's the older nz reserve.
C. M.
Awesome if you go at night take a red spot light you might see some kiwi.
W. W.
A part of NZ that has thankfully been save for all of us to enjoy, our native giant Kauri standing tall like they should be!
J. A.
Great little campsite with kitchen block and hot showers right next to spectacular Kauri forest with Kiwi's - what more could you want!
B. P.
We stopped for the night. Lovely small campground, with shower and toilet facilities. A great spot to stop to break up a long trip.
C. J.
***Please use a RED TORCH to kiwi watch! They don't like bright lights and ruins it for everyone!*** Hot shower and Kiwis! What more do you want?! Men's toilet was a bit grotty but everything else was good!
G. S.
If you go at night time there is a chance to see a kiwi bird but only use a red flash light as white light will scare them off. However there are lots of possums
S. B.
I loved this place because it like being in another world. So cool and peaceful under the canopy of native bush with an abundance of native birds. And theres no entrance fee.
K.
Great park for a late night bush walk. Arrive after 10pm with a red torch and patience, and you may be lucky enough to see a kiwi.
K. H.
Trounson Kauri Park is known for a magnificent stand of kauri trees - one of the best examples in the country. It takes around 40 minutes to walk the track through Trounson Kauri Park; interpretation panels and audio points make the experience highly educational.
Trounson Kauri Park is also a mainland island. This is essentially an intensive ecosystem restoration project with a focus on learning. The goal is to restore the kauri forest ecosystem, including the reintroduction of regionally extinct or threatened fauna/flora. Animal pest control is used for possums, ferrets, cats and rats. The restoration project includes a 586-hectare forest reserve and farmland. The project aims to restore the former richness of native biodiversity this forest once boasted, and to let visitors enjoy a glimpse of what pristine kauri forests were once like.
B. D.
Well laid out paths. Easy walking for the grandchildren. Peaceful and scenic surroundings. Not overcrowded with lots of visitors.
J. R.
Went when quiet and is was like stepping back in time
O. R.
Amazing nature walk with beautiful native trees. Best place to get back in touch with your soul and nature. 100% recommend
G. M.
Dirt roads access. Great walk. Some people have been suffering theft in the carpark so be careful. The night walks here for kiwi would be worth thinking about.
G. T.
Lovely, comfortable place, with beautiful surroundings. Enjoyed our stay even though the weather wasn't the best. Perfect for a quick getaway.
T. B.
Amazing walk, very well done. The board walks and information are fantastic.
J. R. Q.
Loved this forest. The Kauris are impressive. Just mind to clean your shoes because of the Kauri's dieback disease
J. M.
Really nice to visit On a Hot day, the air is beautiful, sad to see the Kauri Dieback, make sure you was your shoes before going into any bush
N. B.
It was awesome place for camping

Beautiful but sad to see some of the Kauri trees falling victim to the die back disease
J. H.

(Translated) At the place where kiwi comes out We can hear kiwi cry at night We can stay at camping place with 15 caches per person Hot shower Refrigerator Sink etc. basic facilities are neat. The reason for subtracting one star is that the cows keep crying at night at the nearby cow farm so that they sleep. ㅜ
